Still some bargain properties out there

THE PROPERTY market has gone a little crazy lately but there is still the odd bargain to be had if you are determined to live in God’s Own Country, the spectacularly beautiful Tweed Shire. This week we are looking at the lower end of the market to see what your money will get you. Under $500,000 What can you buy with less than $500,000 to spend? Not much frankly, unless you want to move into a residential park — you usually can’t take a mortgage out on these properties — or are ready for retirement. There are mobs of cheaper retirement villa/unit options which makes getting older look pretty good, better than the alternative at any rate. There are often studio units for sale at the resort-style complex at 61 Marana Street, Bilambil Heights. Tate Brownlee has one for $275,000 to $300,000. It’s small — you may need to check with your lender on the size — but it’s been nicely renovated and is in a quiet area just 15 minutes to the best beaches. Most of the cheaper properties are in Tweed Heads West, particularly along Kennedy Drive, and have proved a good investment with prices rising as investors and first home owners look for a bargain.
