SUBURB PROFILE: Murwillumbah officially BOOM town
By Jo Kennett
IT TOOK a while for the rest of the world to discover how lovely Murwillumbah is, with the Tweed River and the cane fields and the ever present backdrop of Wollumbin/Mount Warning, but now they have and it is officially booming.
Murwillumbah has long been the agricultural and service hub of the Tweed Valley, originally servicing the many surrounding dairy, beef cattle, cane and banana farms in the area, and it has one of the prettiest showgrounds in Australia.
The beautiful setting has also attracted many artists and craftspeople, with Murwillumbah also serving as the creative heart of the Tweed Shire.
The Tweed Regional Gallery has to be one of the most beautiful galleries in the country and the wonderful M-Arts precinct is home to artists and makers studios and creative businesses and has helped to cement the reputation of the town as an artists hub.
Murwillumbah & District Business Chamber secretary Sharon Matulick says Murwillumbah has more artists per capita than any other town in Australia.
“Living here is a lifestyle choice to be in a community-focused environment but

it’s also a creative space,” she said.
“There are a lot of creative people living here and a lot of new, very diverse businesses.
“Then we have a fabulous museum and art gallery, M-Arts is an amazing space, there’s Husk Distillery, we have the rail trail and a lot of fabulous places in the mountains and really good experiences that bring people here.
“People are drawn to how friendly the people are; it’s a real community vibe and very down-to-earth and authentic.
“We also have some five star restaurants that win the big awards.
“Some people say you can feel the presence of the mountain, it’s a very holistic environment and the town has a lovely heritage feel to it.
“You are also not far from other wonderful villages like Uki and Burringbar and it’s a very easy drive to the beach and some beautiful walks in the area.”
All those good things have seen the population of Murwillumbah grow from 7,032 in 2016 to 9,501 in 2021 and an estimated 10,925 last year; a big jump for a relatively small town.
Last month Murwillumbah had 13 properties available for rent and 29 properties for sale. Median property prices
