Before I tell you what you can expect to find in our first issue of the year, I have to address the ongoing water crisis that has hit our town once again. At the time of writing on Monday January 12, Kent County Council had declared the water outages caused – according to South East Water – by freezing temperatures and the impact of Storm Goretti as a ‘major incident’.

Many areas of Tunbridge Wells have been affected once again, with little or no water. Find out more about this story on pages 6–8.

KCC declares major incident as water woes continue for Tunbridge Wells Residents are still experiencing little or no water into early 2026 due to what South East Water calls ‘intermittent supply interruptions’. Eileen Leahy reports on the latest outage which has seen six and a half thousand homes and businesses affected...

with the outbreak of burst water mains on our network due to the freeze/thaw conditions drinking water storage levels are running low,” a SEW spokesperson said.

That statement was met with ‘concern’ from Mary Creagh, a minister for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, who said the problems were ‘unacceptable’.

“I remain very concerned that people in several areas in the South East are experiencing water supply issues following both cold weather and Storm Goretti,” she said on January 10.

The company said the impact of Storm Goretti, coupled with freezing temperatures, had caused the recent outages in Tunbridge Wells – as well as East Grinstead and Eastbourne causing tens of thousands of homes and businesses to be without water.

Following the major water outage at the end of last year - which started on November 29 and lasted nearly two weeks, affecting 24,000 homes and businesses - South East Water (SEW) is still grappling with ongoing issues regarding its supply to residents.

At the time of going to press the beleaguered water company admitted that there were, once again, thousands of homes across Tunbridge Wells and elsewhere in the South East with little or no water.

According to an official spokesperson the most recent supply problems have been caused by a number of issues across SEW’s network.

Tunbridge Wells MP Mike Martin said that in the local area alone 42,000 customers had been affected by the latest outage, however SEW put the figure at around 28,000.

This follows SEW’s CEO David Hinton appearing at Parliament’s Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee on January 6 where he gave himself and the company an 8 out of 10 rating for how they handled the major outage back in early December.

At the select committee meeting he also said that the original outage, which happened just before the busy Christmas trading period, had been down to SEW’s supply being 'too reliant' on one asset.

Appearing alongside Tanya Sephton, South East Water’s Customer Services Director, in his opening remarks, Hinton also cited extreme weather, housing growth and rising demand, arguing that infrastructure constraints were at the root of the incident.

Hinton added that having 22,000 plus customers reliant on a single source of supply was ‘too many’ and that improving resilience would form part of the company’s future plans.

What the recent SEW outages mean for TW businesses The recent series of water outages following the major one before Christmas means that Tunbridge Wells businesses will face an even more difficult road to financial recovery.

The initial one, where residents had no or low pressure tap water, started on November 29 with supplies returning to most on December 4. For the next nine days, residents were told to boil the restored tap water before consumption.

A disinfection problem at Pembury Water Treatment Works had caused the failure but there was no evidence supply became infected, said South East Water.

Public concern over the safety of tap water harmed seasonal trade exponentially, with average hospitality turnover down 20 to 60% since businesses reopened. Restaurants reported hundreds of cancellations, with many potential guests worried about contamination.

was offering approximately £400 per business above statutory minimums as compensation, with negotiations ongoing.

Commenting on the crisis last year, Alex Green, CEO of Royal Tunbridge Wells Together Business Improvement District (RTW Together BID), told Tunbridge Wells

Business Magazine: “We estimate losses to be in excess of £10m collectively across the town’s businesses including retail and hospitality, and are appalled by South East Water’s response to the incident. There has been extremely poor communication to businesses and now only a hugely unrealistic level of compensation compared to their losses.

“We are working with our MP and the local council on a number of fronts including increasing promotion of destination marketing of the town, possible business rates relief, and supporting insurance claims. It has become clear however, that many businesses are not able to make claims on their insurance, and so the bulk of the compensation needs to come from the organisation responsible for their financial loss. The government has been very clear that SEW should properly compensate for the catastrophic impact they had on the

business community, occurring as it did literally at the worst time in the year.”

Alex Green has also been critical of proposed compensation plans by South East Water: “Whilst SEW have said they will help, they are offering negligible sums. I wonder how their senior leadership team would feel if they were told they would only earn a tenth of their monthly salary through no fault of their own? Put in this context, this shines a light on the scale of compensation being discussed. I doubt the team at SEW would want to fail on their mortgage payments. Likewise, neither do

A recent survey by the office of Tunbridge Wells MP Mike Martin, who called for the resignation of SEW’s David Hinton at the time of the original outage, found that on average, businesses lost approximately £8000 in takings over that particular period.

The survey also found that 31% of businesses said their survival was threatened by cashflow issues created by this crisis, and some businesses have lost revenue equivalent to 7 to 8% of the entire year’s takings.

Results in for TWBC Climate Action Survey During 2025 Tunbridge Wells Borough Council (TWBC) carried out a survey to take the temperature of the town’s thoughts and approach to climate action.

The survey results, published in mid-December, reveal a need for more electric cars, smarter homes, and rising awareness across the borough.

“This was the second year of running our annual climate action survey, which helps us to understand how residents feel about climate change,” a TWBC spokesperson said.

“In 2025, we got a much larger volume of responses (458) in comparison to the same survey in 2024 (215), and we are seeing some encouraging shifts towards sustainable living across the borough.”

In this year’s survey, 95% of respondents felt informed or very well informed about climate change, an increase from 90% in 2024. In 2025, we added a new question to the survey, asking whether it is important that society takes action to tackle climate change, 76% of respondents said yes.

“We saw a 6% increase in residents using electric cars, and a 4% increase in smart meter usage! We also saw a 2% increase in homeowners who would consider making changes to their homes to improve energy efficiency, and a 4% increase in residents who understood biodiversity,” added the TWBC spokesperson.

“We’ll run the survey again each year to track changes and tweak our projects to support all residents in reducing their carbon emissions.”

Employment Rights Act 2025: An overhaul for UK Employers

The Employment Rights Bill which gained Royal Assent in December 2025 to become the Employment Rights Act 2025 (‘the Act’), represents one of the most significant reforms to UK employment law in a generation.

Here, we consider two of its proposed provisions on unfair dismissal and statutory sick pay (SSP), which fundamentally reshape the employment relationship, while strengthening worker protections.

Unfair dismissal – protection arrives earlier Currently, employees must complete two years’ continuous service with their employer before gaining the right to claim unfair dismissal, should their employment be terminated. From 1 January 2027, that qualifying period will be reduced to six months, meaning a 75% reduction in the time required to acquire statutory protection.

This change is significant in a labour market where millions of workers change jobs each year and many leave employment within their first 12 months.

Employers will therefore need to consider adopting earlier performance management procedures, alongside clear documentation, far earlier than may be currently implemented.

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) overhaul – cover from Day One Currently, SSP is only payable from the fourth day of sickness absence and is restricted to employees earning above the Lower Earnings Limit (£125 per week), excluding around one million low-paid individuals.

Under the new framework, SSP will be payable from Day One and the above-mentioned earnings threshold will be abolished. The DWP estimates that these changes are expected to increase the annual cost of SSP by around £420 million to approximately £1.07 billion.

The wider impact Employers cannot ignore that risks now arise sooner, and the need for proactive management from Day One. For individuals, the Act delivers stronger protections, fair treatment, and increased financial security, ensuring additional support throughout employment.

The Commons are for sale Earlier this month it was announced that Tunbridge Wells & Rusthall Commons have been put up for sale.

The current landowner is the Targetfollow Group Ltd. The Norwichbased company notified Tunbridge Wells Borough Council (TWBC) of its latest intention to sell on 26 September 2025.

The TWBC website states that: “The Commons are one of the jewels in the crown of Tunbridge Wells, 256 acres of land filled with diverse flora and fauna, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

This important local asset is very closely managed by the Commons Conservators, a statutory body of 12 people. Alongside the Conservators, working to protect the interests of the Commons are the Council, the Friends of Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons and the Freehold Tenants.

“It is these groups, the Council, Friends and Freehold Tenants, that have expressed their concern about the proposed sale and spoken of their desire to see this important asset brought into community ownership rather than being sold to another commercial organisation.”

A spokesperson for The Friends of Tunbridge Wells & Rusthall Commons told Tunbridge Wells Business Magazine that most people assume the Commons are publicly owned.

“In fact they are privately owned and have recently been put for sale. We are now exploring whether community ownership could be an option.”

The Commons are listed as an Asset of Community Value which immediately places restrictions on their sale. If an ACV is offered for sale this triggers a process known as community right to bid. The Friends group who nominated the Asset are expected to confirm with the Council that they wish to be considered a preferred bidder, securing up to six months to raise the necessary funds and submit an offer by 26 March 2026.

As a result, they have organised a meeting on January 24 at The Camden Centre in order to debate whether community ownership could help the Commons’ long-term future for public enjoyment, nature and heritage.

The group added that the public meeting is a chance to hear the facts about the sale of the Commons, understand what options are being explored and ask questions and share your views.

Everyone who cares about the Commons is welcome.”

The spokesperson added that the Friends are also looking for pledges of support and legal and professional help.

Many will be looking to get 2026 off to a positive start, and it’s most likely that will require a change. he year 2025 was a hard one for many in the business community, not helped by Government decisions on National Insurance and Business Rates.

However, some of the good stuff has gone largely ignored, namely adopting a longterm view of the national infrastructure needs, and changes to the planning system.

When it comes to 2026, Kent’s bigticket items will include greater certainty over the delivery of the Lower Thames Crossing; managing the EU’s new border checks and its Exit-Entry System, and progress toward the reorganisation of Local Government, scheduled for 2028.

Another positive change to look forward to is the Kent County Council and Medway Council collaboration to replace the loss of Visit Kent and Locate in Kent – two

organisations that championed the county as a visitor destination and place for inward investment. The two councils have dug deep and funded the recruitment of some of the lost teams to create an in-house group at County Hall. Still a work

in progress, the new organisation and its brands are expected to launch early this year. My money is on their names being Visit Kent and Invest Kent.

a billion pounds to progressing the Lower Thames Crossing.

When the nigh on £10bn project is complete it’ll connect Tilbury in Essex and Gravesend in Kent. A major beneficiary will be Dartford. This should see an easing of the regular congestion at the QEII Dartford River Crossing which already regularly operates at 150,000 vehicles a day – way beyond the 135,000 vehicles it was built for.

Despite the gargantuan efforts of Eurotunnel and Port of Dover, it’s likely we’ll have to brace ourselves for disruption at the border ports as the much-delayed new EU border checks come fully into effect – and gradually settle down. New passport systems – involving biometric data collection and fingerprinting of all passengers entering the EU – will start later this year.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but if only we’d agreed not to become a ‘third country’ now sitting outside the Customs Union and Single Market.

With the Government committed to delivering 1.5m new homes during its parliament, it has tasked every local authority to have a Local Plan adopted by 2027. The good news is that Tunbridge Wells now has an adopted plan for 2020–2038, with a vision and strategic objectives for the delivery of new homes and employment across the borough.

GREY MATTERS

Last year also saw the introduction of the ‘Grey Belt’ concept, acknowledging that some Green Belt doesn’t perform the functions for what its designation was designed. As a result, we can expect many considered development projects coming forward across West Kent. Let’s hope politicians can be pragmatic and give the development community more certainty over the planning process.

When it comes to the reorganisation of Kent’s local government landscape, there’s still a degree of uncertainty. Kent and Medway were not selected to be fast tracked to become Mayoral Strategic Authorities, meaning we lost out on a devolution deal and funding for strategic issues such as infrastructure, health and education. However, with change comes opportunity, and businesses need to be aware of what reorganisation might mean for them.

Since the government’s fast track decision, council leaders have been cogitating over various options. These range from KCC’s suggestion to have three assemblies sitting beneath one authority at County Hall, to a panoply of three, four or five unitary authorities (like Medway at the moment), each with differing boundaries, and some even recommending splitting existing district and parish councils.

The decision now rests with the Secretary of State, and it’s expected fairly early this year, although if the experience of Surrey and Sussex is repeated in Kent, it could be delayed.

The only certainty is change itself, and once again that’ll play out across Kent. Let’s hope for the best - but plan for the worst and we may be pleasantly surprised.

COUNTY NEWS

Not all New Years are Happy The winter months are sadly the most likely time to lose a loved one. Lowered immune systems and respiratory infections in particular take a heavy toll. The loss of a loved one is one of the most challenging times we face in life. Grief can be overwhelming and the necessary processes that Richard Shearing need attending to seem daunting.

These processes are the responsibility of the Personal Representatives – Executors where they are named in a Will or, where there is no Will, it is those entitled to apply to be Administrators in line with the rules of intestacy.

The deceased’s estate needs to be valued and, where necessary, reported to HMRC. Estates that are subject to Inheritance Tax need to have paid the tax owing by the end of the sixth month following the death, with the Inheritance Tax return needing to be filed within twelve months.

In cases where the deceased left a Will, the terms of the Will need to be reviewed so that the estate can be ultimately distributed in line with the deceased’s wishes. The beneficiaries need to be located and the appropriate checks carried out. Where the deceased died without a Will, sometimes genealogy research needs to be undertaken to establish who will benefit from the estate.

Many assets will need a Grant of Representation to pay them out to the estate. While there is some guidance on doing this yourself, it is easy to fall foul of the rules, even inadvertently, and there can be penalties levied for doing so.

We always recommend that, at a minimum, Personal Representatives seek professional guidance on how to deal with an estate. Often those Personal Representatives then wish to instruct professionals to deal with the estate on their behalf, thereby giving them the security of knowing the estate will be properly dealt with, while also giving them room to grieve without the worry of an involved legal process.

he end of last year saw the inaugural Tunbridge Wells Business Magazine Awards take place. The judges had a tough time selecting just one worthy winner for each category as the standard of entries was exceptionally high but after much deliberation they made their choices.

Business community comes together for charity auction

M

embers of enTWine – the business forum for Tunbridge Wells – gathered at The Old Auction House for an end of year catch up. The event included lots of opportunity to chat over some delicious food and drink.

Launched five years ago by Victoria Sampson from CooperBurnett LLP, Lynne Gadsden from Eight Financial Advice and Pam Loch from LOCH (represented at this event by Ashley Scriven from LOCH), the group has the mantra ‘we listen, we share, we benefit’, which it has carried through its launch online during the pandemic to where it is now.

Every enTWine get together has included a break-out room, to give everyone a voice and an opportunity to speak with new people.

Over the years, enTWine has supported a number of local charities and, this time, the team held an auction in aid of The

The prize was a splendid hamper of local produce, kindly donated by CooperBurnett and Michael Gadsden from Eight Financial Advice proved to be an excellent auctioneer. After some competitive bidding, a grand total of £620 was raised – thanks to both Siobhan Stirling from Sharp Minds Communications and Lynne Gadsden.

David Bartholomew, Chair of Pickering, told guests about the support the charity provides to people with cancer locally (and their friends and family). Pickering celebrated its 21st birthday in November and has ‘the key to the door’ of a new Centre in Monson Road, Tunbridge Wells, which it hopes to officially move into later in 2026. Once renovated, the building will be fully accessible and include double the amount of therapy rooms, as well as the homely feel of the existing Centre, just a few doors down the road.

After a year of stripping everything back, entrepreneur and Success Coach Dee Airey explains to Eileen Leahy how refocusing on teaching, mentoring and leadership has reshaped her career and inspired her brilliant new book Set Goals Like A Rich B*tch…

025 was the year Dee Airey decided to make some big changes in her professional life, which has seen the successful entrepreneur going into 2026 with a renewed sense of focus, purpose and alignment.

So what happened, I ask her, as we sit down to talk about her exciting new projects which include an incredible new book and a trip to Miami to speak at a specialist global coaching event.

“I decided to strip back everything,” explains Dee. “I thought to myself it must be pretty confusing for people to determine what I do exactly, as I have a number of diverse businesses and professional profiles.”

“

I am an entrepreneur but I have realised that actually I am happiest teaching and mentoring others.

She’s not wrong, as Dee is one of the most prolific people in business in Tunbridge Wells – and beyond.

Some will know her as a successful portrait photographer with a studio on The Pantiles; others will know of Dee’s eponymously named Success Coach services and podcasting. Then of course there is her role as CEO of Construction Professionals HR & Recruitment (CPR), the business she set up in 2024 which places experts within the construction industry.

She’s also the author of many successful empowerment books and creator of many business training modules including The Wealth Switch and Limitless Woman. And her professional prowess doesn’t end just there. Dee is also a well-respected public speaker and runs a charity for children in Zambia. But despite all of this, she tells me that the epiphany she has had over the past 12 months is that her true passions are teaching, leadership

coaching and supporting people.

“It was actually my own coach Lisa who made me see this. She said to me after a very long chat, ‘Stop hiding behind all this stuff, Dee. You’re a coach, you’re a teacher and a mentor’. And so that’s when I started to streamline everything,” reveals Dee. And by doing that, she says it has led to her feeling far more focused on both her businesses – and herself.

“I am an entrepreneur, and have been from a very young age, but I have realised that actually I am happiest teaching and mentoring others.”

That, says Dee, could be writing leadership and safety courses for graduates looking to go into the construction industry; providing expert guidance through her Dee Airey Success Coach platform or courtesy of her latest tome Set Goals Like A Rich B*tch, which will be out soon.

“I am so proud of this book and I think the only reason I could write it is because I have lived through what I talk about in terms of setting goals, not ignoring those important moonshot moments and envisaging yourself living your dream life – and then achieving it. I feel that I’ve had to do the journey in order to authenticate writing it. And despite the title Dee says that this isn’t a ‘get rich quick’ book. Money isn’t the goal – it’s the facilitator to a better life.

“Set Goals Like A Rich B*tch has been sitting just below the surface for about three years. It opened up a lot of old wounds talking about my ‘Why’ when I was a lot younger and how I dealt with negativity. But essentially I have always been a huge goal setter – that’s my whole satnav for everything – so writing the book was both cathartic and also very healing. I have had to break through a lot of hurdles of self-doubt and lack of confidence throughout my life in order to achieve what I have now.”

“I’m here to help people move forward and succeed”

Dee says that when she reflects on the different stages of her life, she can see how her ‘Why’ reshaped itself over the years – but interestingly it never really changed.

And her book confirms this with the following opening statement: “At the age of 14 it was about freedom. At 17 it became about generational change. In my early businesses it became independence.

In yoga, it became teaching. In HR, it became responsibility and purpose. In photography, it became confidence and self-perception. And now, as a Success Coach, it’s about alignment, growth and impact.”

Dee says that having such a diverse and demanding career has provided her with the tools to not only write the book but

to help others identify their ‘Why’ and achieve it.

She started working as a secretary back in the late 1980s, primarily in the construction industry, where she went on to achieve great things, and quickly moved up the ranks.

In 1994 her then boss Peter (who nearly 20 years later became her husband) decided to set up a small consultancy and Dee took the risk of leaving her salaried job to go with him.

“We were recovering from a recession on and he told me he couldn’t afford me, but instead of seeing this as a knock-back I saw it as an opportunity, so I suggested that I go self-employed to freelance secretarial services for other small surveying offices. It was a way of earning more money and fulfilling my dream to work for myself.”

Dee, as an entrepreneur in the making, also enrolled at night school to further enhance her tech skills so that she could teach basic IT and word processing skills to others.

“It’s always been about learning then teaching others for me – even with tech,” she says with a wry smile.

Together, along with another colleague, the pair co-founded Airey Miller from the dining room in Peter’s house. It’s worth noting that Airey Miller is now a multi-million-pound multidisciplinary consultancy business that boasts 120 staff and numerous offices dotted around the country.

During Dee’s time in the business, she discovered yoga.

“That practice changed everything. After

years of practice I got a teacher training qualification and started to teach my own classes on evenings and weekends. Later, I remember having to write a 200-hour course as I wanted to teach yoga teachers – not just do classes – and so I left Airey Miller to concentrate on yoga. I gained a qualification as a registered school from the Yoga Alliance to teach in the UK and Ireland but in all honesty I had no idea how much teaching and mentoring would become part of my life at that stage.”

I am so proud of this book and I think the only reason I could write it is because I have lived through what I talk about She shares another quote from her new book to frame the reasoning behind this: “From 2003 to 2006, I taught full-time. It was a big change for me. People may look at that move and think it must have taken confidence to leave what I was doing and step into something new. But confidence didn’t exist yet. Courage did.”

Dee explains that she stepped back into the Airey Miller business three years later with more experience, more maturity, and a deeper understanding of people – and herself – and felt ready to take on more responsibilities.

and IT to HR, and I delivered in-house training, blending everything I’d learned across my career. I talk more about this in the book but in a nutshell, it was courage that allowed me to step into that role, not certainty. Courage is what makes you willing to reinvent yourself.”

Dee adds that all that dedication and effort has given her the opportunity – and confidence – to launch her other businesses including her wedding and portrait photography and CPR. The former came about thanks to a passion for photography that Dee always had, but it was when her husband Peter bought her a course it ignited something that Dee could see as a business. CPR was a direct result of Dee’s involvement at Airey Miller where she could see how much the company was spending on recruitment. Dee tells me the fees were astronomical and she knew she could do a better job.

“I can never resist creating a business opportunity,” she states.

“When Covid happened, suddenly all the opportunities I had to do wedding and family portrait photography were gone.

I thought, what can I do? And I had that lightbulb moment of going online. So, I started a podcast and community where I was coaching professional photographers about how to create great businesses.”

That idea proved to be extremely successful and although Dee’s photography work quickly picked up postpandemic, she says that she is now actively taking a step back from that in order to concentrate on coaching full-time.

they actually begin to take shape and reveal a path that you just couldn’t see before. I talk about this extensively because those dreams, those goals are the catalyst for change. Set Goals Like A Rich B*tch is all about that turning point and what happens next.”

Having had an exclusive preview of the book I can tell you that it is a truly inspiring read and knowing that it’s based on Dee’s own journey, it has a really genuine tone to it – unlike a lot of the noise that you find on the internet.

background wasn’t easy. In fact, I was heartbroken,” she says. “It had been part of me for so long and I had built something beautiful. But courage said, ‘You’re meant for more’. This meant that I could be more focused and serve more people, inspire more people through showing up as the teacher, coach and mentor that I truly am. It means I can still coach photographers to create and build amazing businesses, but I can no longer limit myself to that.”

In her new book Set Goals Like A Rich B*tch she writes: “I’ve always believed that every one of us carries a version of ourselves that we rarely admit out loud.

It’s a life that has been calling us for years and highlights our greatness.”

She adds that most people never say these dreams out loud as they feel too bold, too ambitious and too unrealistic.

They feel like something other people get to have. But not them.

“I understand that feeling deeply. I grew up around messages that told me to stay small. Money was for greedy people. For white people. Ambitious dreams were for other families. Life was meant to be safe, not expansive. When you grow up hearing things like that, they settle into your DNA if you don’t question them.”

She tells me that she set her first big goal at 14. “I told myself I would work for myself one day.”

By the age of 17 she’d added a second goal and that was if she ever had children, they would go to a private school.

“Setting those two initial goals felt almost preposterous as I’d been thrown out of

school with no qualifications and was working multiple jobs just to keep going.

“And yet what I want to tell people, courtesy of Set Goals Like A Rich B*tch, is that no matter what your circumstances are, if you dream big enough you can achieve. Living so far away from the life I wanted, it almost felt foolish to keep dreaming. But the older version of me – the one I hadn’t met yet – didn’t let me quit. She nudged me constantly. She reminded me that more was possible, even when my circumstances suggested otherwise.”

Despite taking many risks and working multiple jobs, Dee’s initial dreams never disappeared.

Instead, she says they wait until you are ready to hear from them again.

“In my new book I describe how the moment you stop pushing them down

revealing and supportive. If you are looking to make those dreams a reality, then this is a very good place to start.

Divided into ten chapters, Dee takes her readers through the many stages of dreaming about and achieving success.

She says that it’s definitely not a ‘get rich quick’ guide but more of a manual pepper WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE: Dee Airey is passionate about public speaking and helping people reach their potential Some key areas Dee concentrates on include courage, consistency, clarity and gratitude.

“I know that you need courage in order to change direction in life and clarity comes when you make that choice to change and cancel out all the peripheral noise. And remember that gratitude isn’t passive. It’s an active decision to place your attention where it will serve you best.”

ybersecurity will be at the top of the agenda for many businesses moving into 2026, following a spate of high-profile cyber-attacks against top UK companies in 2025.

These attacks have impacted many high-profile companies such as Marks & Spencer, The Co-op, and Jaguar Land Rover, leading to empty shelves and halted production lines as companies struggled without access to their computer systems.

around the country recommending that physical copies of contingency plans should be kept as a precaution, in the event of systems becoming inaccessible.

These plans should also detail how teams will communicate without work email or other digital communications platforms.

The NCSC has stated that half of UK small businesses suffer a cyber incident every year. To mitigate this, the agency currently offers free cyber liability insurance for any UK organisation that has a turnover of under £20 million and achieves their Cyber Essentials certification, which aims to educate small businesses on cybersecurity.

Different providers take different approaches to managing accounts after death:

In some cases, families may not even know certain accounts exist, meaning assets can remain undiscovered and inaccessible.

• Facebook and Instagram allow accounts to be ‘memorialised’, preserving content while preventing new activity. Facebook also lets users appoint a legacy contact.

Recording and Managing Your Wishes

• LinkedIn, X and Snapchat do not offer memorialisation, but accounts can usually be closed upon request.

To make things easier for your executors and loved ones, it is wise to take proactive steps during your lifetime. These may include:

• Google, including YouTube, offers an ‘Inactive Account Manager’ tool, allowing users to decide who can access their

accounts after a period of inactivity.

These options highlight the importance of taking action in your lifetime to establish preferences.

Reading the signals for tech hiring in 2026

I

Roger Wood, founder and director of Jump IT takes the current temperature of the technology recruitment sector and advises on what changes could be made to improve the outlook for the year ahead...

n December 2025, I ran a poll with my LinkedIn network for their hopes, aspirations, and expectations for 2026.

The replies included a cross-section of candidates and clients alike. 52% expected a tougher 2026. Only 16% expected a bumper 2026.

With the uptake in AI use, extra costs of hiring (increased NI contributions), and employers constantly looking to streamline by outsourcing, I do feel 2026 will be a tighter/tougher year than the last.

There is also the undercurrent of possible visa changes affecting a lot of tech jobs.

Skills shortages will persist as a defining issue. According to Hays, over 85% of employers have experienced shortages, particularly in specialist areas such as cloud technology and DevOps,

Supporting, promoting and celebrating Tunbridge Wells

W

hilst 2025 has not been without its challenges; rising pay and NI contributions for businesses, water issues and supply chain disruption to name but a few, there is a lot to be proud of in Tunbridge Wells. As a town, we bucked the declining high street trend, seeing a 7.6% increase in visitor numbers year on year, compared to –0.4% in the South East and 3.7% increase UK-wide.

As we ramp up for another busy year, the BID team have reflected on all that we have achieved in 2025.

We saw the launch of a quarterly BID members networking event, giving over 200 attendees an opportunity to discuss key issues collaboratively, and network with peers.

We also saw over 120 members complete free training programmes including First Aid and Allergen Awareness.

Following feedback, we also developed a recommended suppliers directory, with BID members recommending possible contractors to fellow members, as well as a marketing handbook with useful contacts and advice.

Our enhancement projects saw the completion of the High Street pedestrian decking project and the Calverley Precinct & Fiveways project to improve paving, seating, lighting and planting got underway. Additionally a further four ‘cabinets of curiosity’ were created from redeployed utility boxes.

Our environmental commitments continued. After the launch of the all-inone recycling zero waste box initiative from TerraCycle, we have also created a location tour on the RTW Love Local App of all the places you can recycle items across town. The BID also arranged the first ‘TW Spring Clean’ (part of the Great British Spring Clean) in 2025 seeing 154

We supported the town with additional security patrols in the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays, and we have seen a record number of BID members requesting SafeTown radios this year, all of which has helped see a decrease in crime and anti-social behaviour issues from 65/1,000 people to 58/1,000 people (UK average is 74/1,000) and led to Tunbridge Wells featuring in the Anubis 2025 report as one of the top ten safest places to live and work in the UK(1).

Throughout the year we ran promotions to encourage tourists to discover Tunbridge Wells. The railway station

advertising campaign covering London and selected home counties reached 10.28 million people and the national and regional (Kent & Sussex) radio campaign reached 1.3 million. We targeted over 270,000 overseas tourists and tour operators to visit Tunbridge Wells. In addition, we ran campaigns reaching 750,000 residents and local tourists encouraging them to ‘support local’.

The BID organised events to increase footfall into the town and provide entertainment for visitors, residents and local workers. Our successful Wimbledon finals ‘Fanzone’ weekend ran again, bolstered by ‘Filmzone’ the day before, with thousands enjoying the big screen on a perfect summer’s weekend in Calverley Grounds. Our free family trails have grown in popularity with over 3,000 families completing the Easter, Halloween and Christmas. And, more recently, our ‘Joy to the Wells’ Christmas events, which saw over 60,000 people in the town on our Kick off launch day, over 4,000 tickets bought for the Rudolph Runner train and contributed to a record 690,000+ people visiting the town from 8 - 31 December.

The BID also supports local event organisers. Over the last seven years, we have given over 90 grants totalling £250,000, as well as loaning equipment, and supporting with promotion. “The skills and experience you get from volunteering are really valuable” For this month’s Community Heroes feature, Sarah Raine caught up with Neil Paterson, who volunteers as manager of the gardening team at West Kent MIND Let’s start by you telling us a little about your connection to West Kent I moved to Sevenoaks from West Wittering (on the UK south coast) in the mid-1980s. I previously worked in financial IT in the city, but left the corporate world in 2007. Since then, I have been gardening, sailing, providing carer support to family and volunteering at West Kent Mind. As a keen sailor, I also regularly collect for the Sevenoaks & District branch of the RNLI. For those who don’t know West Kent Mind, can you tell them a little about the charity?

West Kent Mind is a local mental health charity that is part of the national Mind group. We’re here to make sure anyone with a mental health problem in Sevenoaks, Tonbridge & Malling and Tunbridge Wells districts has somewhere to turn for advice and support. We support both children and adults, through uplifting Wellbeing Groups (like art or creative groups), individual counselling and practical everyday help. The charity offers a range of free, low-cost, as well as paid services like our Fast-track counselling, when waiting isn’t an option.

How long have you been a volunteer?

I have been volunteering for over 15 years. My brother-in-law was the Lead Counsellor and IT Manager and introduced me to the organisation. He knew they were starting a gardening group and that’s how my involvement began. I am privileged to work alongside fellow volunteers and clients to keep the garden maintained and grow produce. As volunteers, we don’t know the details of clients’ circumstances, which means we meet as equals.

What inspired you to volunteer your time?

I think it’s good for people to give their time to help others, if they are able to.

For me, it has been a pleasure to meet a rich mix of people, support them and make a difference to the garden. There is a sense of accomplishment when we work together, achieving varying goals, projects

Tell us about some of the awards the garden has won over the years…

I am proud of this! Highlights include a Kent Wildlife Trust Gold award and best Community Garden. We also won the Sevenoaks in Bloom Community Garden several years running too. I was also pleased to receive a Special Recognition Award at our end-of-year celebration in December 2025 for my services to the charity.

Why is working in nature so good for mental health?

It has become well known that spending time outside in nature can enhance mood, reduce stress and help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Being outside is a calming environment.

You are not enclosed, but in the open air working side by side. For instance, the difference in that dynamic can make talking to each other easier.

Can anyone volunteer as a gardener at West Kent Mind?

Absolutely! People can be as hands on as they wish. You don’t have to be RHS qualified or even to have gardened before. Over the years we have greatly benefited from all sorts of experience and expertise. You may wish to quietly do something on your own or join in with others. Even if it is to sit on the terrace for a drink and a chat our approach is flexible.

Do you find clients still return to the garden post their counselling?

Yes. I am proud that we have clients who continue to support the garden long after they stop receiving counselling support.

For others, we know that when they stop coming, they are at a better place in their lives, and that feels good too.

Why do you think volunteering matters so much in our community?

I think it’s good to do something that helps others, that might not be available to them due to all sorts of constraints that are ultimately financial. It is also interesting to do something different.

Something you may not ordinarily think of doing.

And what about the benefits of doing so?

The skills and experience you get from volunteering are really valuable. It would be very interesting to see a sort of ‘volunteering conscription’ offered by any government. Those at a particular stage in their life could gain work experience, meet different people, deal with varied situations, learn communication and team skills. It could broaden horizons, open minds and integrate people into their communities in a different way.

It has been one of the most fulfilling contributions I have been able to make.

For me, is has given life a different perspective.

A taxing situation courtesy of Autumn Statement announcement HEAD of Thackray Williams’ Private Client Department, Elliot Lewis, had a whirlwind few days at the end of last year explaining to the listeners and readers of the BBC and The Telegraph how Inheritance Tax changes mean the firm is expecting a growing number of older clients to say ‘I do’ in 2026.

In Rachel Reeves’ first Budget in 2024, she announced that pension pots would be brought into the Inheritance Tax (IHT) net from April 2027. Crucially, those who are either married or in a civil partnership will continue to benefit from spousal exemption, meaning the entire estate can be passed to the surviving spouse tax free. Unmarried couples do not have this benefit – even if they have lived together for years.

This has changed the conversations that Thackray Williams’ Private Wealth Department is having with older unmarried clients as to whether tying the knot or entering a civil partnership is a

solution that feels right for them.

As Elliot told BBC Breakfast: "It's had a huge impact in practice. The statistics bear out that older couples are an increasingly large proportion of people that are actually getting married more than ever - this is only going to supercharge that. The conversations that we're having with people at the moment suggest that for a lot of our clients it is a serious consideration. The benefit is you get spouse exemption; any assets that pass between the couple - either marriage or civil partnership - you get

Elliot also featured on the same day on BBC Radio 4’s Money Box Live, where he explained that the changes are likely to increase the number of older couples getting married: “It’s an option for most clients. It has been for a while, but if you think about it, adding potentially hundreds of thousands of pounds of pension assets into a taxable estate clearly is going to cause more people a bigger tax problem.”

And as Elliot explained in The Telegraph: “Unmarried couples... may suddenly find themselves within the scope of Inheritance Tax, which in turn will impact the retirement finances of the surviving partner.”

“Trinity is about engaging, entertaining and inspiring” Jacqui Green, CEO of Trinity Theatre, reveals to Eileen Leahy the key goals she and her team are aiming to achieve in 2026 for the much-loved cultural centre As it’s the start of a new year, can you please tell us what Trinity’s chief artistic aims are for 2026?

Our chief artistic aims are to continue to develop our audiences and drive awareness of what Trinity does and the amazing programme we have.

We have some big-name comedians, amazing live music, live and screened film, theatre, contemporary dance, as well as our wonderful youth theatre and local company Trinity Theatre Club (TTC). We also have some wonderful artists who will be exhibiting in our gallery this coming year.

And what about your chief charitable aims for the new year?

These remain the same and, in a nutshell, it’s about engaging, entertaining and inspiring through the arts in all forms. We are fortunate to inhabit a remarkable building and Clocktower, which adds a heritage attraction and a warm and welcoming café and bar for local community groups to the list.

Our Encore programme runs play script reading, Silver Swans dance, movers and singing on weekdays, and we deliver the programme in care homes too. We also host U3A groups, adult education classes, myriad adult art groups, and for younger audiences we run Story Time weekly on our stage.

Would you say your demographic has changed over the years as you endeavour to put on more variety as a theatre and community space?

We have been working hard on developing our audience across the broad demographic we have in Tunbridge Wells.

That could be new people to town, young families, first-time parents, and music and comedy lovers. We are delighted to see a higher percentage of first-time ticket buyers, higher overall occupancies, as well as sold-out Christmas shows. Growing audiences and, in turn, earned income help us have confidence going into 2026.

At the other end of our generational range is our creative engagement programme. We run this in schools across the region, including primary, SEND and secondary schools. This may be via specific programmes like Speech Bubbles, helping Reception and Year 1 children with their confidence and communication skills, or a specific set of workshops, often culminating in a show. A highlight this year was Alice in Wonderland, performed by the leavers at Oakley School, Tonbridge.

We are privileged to have over 150 volunteers who give so generously of their time and, in turn, Trinity provides them with a meeting place of likeminded people, and they develop good friendships as a by-product.

What other plans are in the pipeline for Trinity in 2026?

In what ways are you adapting to changing audience behaviours, including digital engagement or alternative performance formats?

We are acutely aware that we are competing for two key shares: share of time and share of purse. The former is critically down to our artistic programme adapting and flexing to evolving demands and trends. Jason Lower, Creative Director and Deputy CEO, is constantly reviewing the latest comedy, live shows and music acts, and Hugh Brown, our cinema programmer, actually takes a week off to attend London Cinema Week and identify likely award winners.

Turning Japanese

lthough it may still be winter you can still start formulating ideas for your dream garden right now.

A great bit of advice to remember is that a strong idea and starting point helps stimulate the creative process and can be interpreted throughout a garden design, both in its structure, furniture and planting.

And very often a clue from a client really gets the creative juices flowing! One of ours had spent much of their formative years in Japan with their parents and wanted to reflect this in a very special enclosed courtyard planned to adjoin a new private study they were building.

The aim was to have the courtyard as an extension to the study and enjoy it both as a picture viewed from inside the building, but also as a quiet space they could hold meetings and contemplate ideas, and of course relax.

Our concept for the garden involved researching typical Japanese garden styles, planting, materials and

characteristics. Then relating these to the local architecture and planting conditions and creating a courtyard with a strong oriental theme.

The execution included designing and sourcing manufacturers for an entrance gate, trellis screens, a curved cedar bench, a galvanised powder coated steel outdoor staircase and balcony, a water feature, a bespoke curved outdoor bench, plus a stone patio area and entrance steps and planting throughout.

All this is set within a walled garden setting created by our local construction partners for the project.

The garden features a beautiful Acer Palmatum Sango Kaku and Black Bamboo, a large fern forming a structural display within a black urn.

Elsewhere a huge feature urn from Torc Pots sports an Astelia Silver Shadow and a smaller container a Cryptomeria japonica.

The core design and pattern for the Japanese gate and trellis was created by

us initially. This was then translated into a digital coded programme and cut out of panels of Tricoya using a CNC machine.

The same principle was then transferred to the staircase design and in particular the steel panels of the balustrade and the treads of the steps were formed using a similar laser cutting machine.

Framework for the gate and trellis panels were created in Accoya. Both Tricoya and Accoya being chemically enhanced wood that perform brilliantly in outdoor and all weather conditions.

To complete the scene a bright red lacquered Japanese style chair designed by us sits on the new office balcony.

Our client and their interior designers then followed the Japanese theme through into their adjoining office furnishings and decor.

We also managed to source a rare woodblock print by the acclaimed artist Toyokuni III, AKA Kunisada, which now adourns the study.

So staying really focused (especially when you have a small garden, or a particular feature, or an area of a garden you want to transform), will really pay dividends and enhance the enjoyment of your outdoor space.

“Tax always shapes investment decisions in the property market” Do tax rises really lead to higher rents? Becky Moran of TN Lettings takes a look at the two per cent property tax increase to gauge what it really means for rents and tenants

W

henever tax changes are announced, the rental market quickly becomes part of the conversation.

A rise in property-related tax often leads to the same assumption: landlords will increase rents, and tenants will feel the impact almost immediately.

The Autumn Budget confirmed a two per cent increase in property income tax from 2027. That figure matters. But what matters just as much is how landlords actually respond, rather than how the headlines suggest they will.

Why tax changes influence behaviour, not instant decisions

Tax has always shaped investment decisions in the property market. For landlords, it affects long-term planning more than day-today rent setting.

Some will review rent levels where the market allows it.

Others will reassess their wider investments, especially if a property is already delivering slim returns.

What is far less common is an overnight reaction driven by a single policy announcement.

In most cases, tax changes become part of a wider calculation that includes mortgage costs, maintenance, tenant demand, and future capital growth.

The limit most people forget about is affordability. And one of the biggest checks on rent growth has nothing to do with tax.

Tenants can only pay what their income allows. In many areas, rents are already close to that point. When affordability is stretched, landlords face a choice: price realistically or risk longer void periods.

This is why tax rises do not automatically translate into higher rents across the board.

In some locations, the ceiling has already been reached. Landlords have more than one lever to pull and increasing rent is an option, but it is rarely the first one.

Many landlords respond by adjusting how they run a property. That might mean pausing non-essential upgrades, restructuring finance, or simply accepting lower margins for a period of time. This is especially common where property is

For landlords focused on stability, keeping a good tenant often makes more financial sense than chasing a marginal rent increase.

Different landlords, different priorities

It is easy to talk about landlords as if they all think the same way. In reality, motivations vary widely.

Some landlords rely on rental income to supplement earnings. Others see property as part of a pension plan. Many

are focused on capital growth and are prepared to operate close to break-even in the short term.

As a result, responses to tax changes are mixed. There is no single outcome for rents or supply.

Selling does not mean the rental market shrinks

Another concern often raised is that higher tax will push landlords out, reducing available homes for tenants.

In practice, properties sold by one landlord are frequently bought by another. Ownership changes, but the home often stays within the rental sector.

In some cases, properties move into social or alternative rental models rather than leaving the market altogether.

Tax rises matter: they influence decisions, returns, and long-term strategy.

But they do not operate in isolation, and they do not guarantee higher rents.

raditionally, spring is seen as the prime time to sell a property, but January and February can also present an excellent, and often underestimated, window to list your home. Whilst bleak weather and a desire to hunker down may not make winter seem like an obvious choice, there are several compelling reasons why selling early in the year can work strongly in your favour…

The Advantages of a January or February Listing

One of the biggest benefits is reduced competition. Many sellers will deliberately be waiting until the spring (typically March through to May), knowing that their garden will shine and embracing with renewed optimism the air of change that comes with the season. As a result, fewer properties are listed for sale in January and February.

This is then combined with high levels of activity from serious buyers on the property search portals, such as Rightmove and On The Market, who are often highly motivated. Undoubtedly there will be plenty of buyers who will just be starting their search, but many will be keen to press on, having made New Year resolutions, or maybe who missed out in the previous autumn market (which was especially lack-lustre in 2025 thanks to the unfounded rumours surrounding the Autumn Budget). Taylor-Made Dreams takes a look back at some memorable moments the children’s charity has provided its TMD Warriors and their families throughout 2025...

O

ver the last year, we have been incredibly inspired by local community, with both businesses and individuals going above and beyond to make dreams a reality for the children and families we support.

These dreams are a moment away from the every day, a light in the dark for TMD families, and with every donation we are able to make sure another magical experience can be achieved for a child with life-limiting illnesses.

Each and every person that joined us for this year’s TMD Dragonfly Ball, helped to make this our largest and most magical fundraiser to date At the beginning of the year, we were able to deliver a very special holiday for TMD Warrior Poppy and her family, when they visited Liverpool FC’s training ground to meet the team. With the help of our amazing Patron, John Bishop, Poppy was able to meet and take photos with her favourite football team, alongside a selection of gifts with signatures from all the players.

Poppy’s dad Jordan said: “The trip to Liverpool FC’s training ground was honestly the best day for everyone involved and it wouldn’t have been possible without Taylor-Made Dreams. It really was a once in a lifetime experience and we all smiled all day especially the kids. A day we will never forget.”

Days like these, aim to always be a day they will never forget. For our families, planning something like this can feel impossible when there is already so much to do. It can be overwhelming and isolating when your child is diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, with regular medical checks and appointments, that simply don’t allow our families to plan positive memories alongside that. We aim to ease that stress, by providing positive activities and gifts for them to look forward to, creating happy, lasting memories that allow them to spend quality time together.

TMD Warriors Mimi and Winnie both had some magical wishes fulfilled this year with their families, staying at both Legoland and Peppa Pig World. Mimi had a night’s stay at the Legoland Castle with two-day entry to the park, with added spending money to make sure each day was as truly magical as possible. Winnie headed to Peppa Pig World near the end of the year, for a twoday hotel stay at Peppa Pig World, a photo package to capture their favourite rides, and spending money for food and the gift shop.

And just last month we managed to create an afternoon of Christmas memories for Stanley and his family, who had not been able to visit a Christmas grotto for the last four years due to his illness. To make this a Christmas to remember we contacted a very special guest, to see if he could visit Stanley a little earlier than Christmas Eve this year.

His family told us that Stanley’s Santa visit was ‘so personal and magical!’

“Santa takes a lot of time to learn about all the individual children, their likes, dislikes, friends etc. The magic on Stanley’s face when the big important book – the Nice List - came out was priceless!”

“Stanley hasn’t been able to visit a grotto for the last 4 years so having Santa at his house is so, so special! It’s a difficult time of year for us all and to have someone come to our home to help ease that means so much, more than you will ever know.”
