his month we have the brilliant Sophie ForrestLavery as our cover star. The timing couldn’t be better for this experienced HR professional to be our lead feature given that more changes in the government’s new - and some would say quite controversial Employment Rights Act are coming into effect.

New ways to vote in May 2026 local elections Tunbridge Wells Borough Council (TWBC) is one of just four councils chosen by the Government to be a pilot area for flexible voting at the local elections in May 2026, encouraging greater participation in democracy.

Cambridge, Milton Keynes and North Herts are the other councils selected to be part of the new ways of voting trial.

“Voters can be assured these new arrangements are just as secure as the polling stations they’re used to” TWBC will be offering voters different ways to cast their vote in person in advance of polling day on Thursday 7 May. Registered voters will be able to vote in one of three convenient locations and will not be limited to a designated polling station.

Three voter hubs will be open on Saturday 2 May, from 9am - 6pm, and

Sunday 3 May, 10.30am - 4.30pm, in Cranbrook, Paddock Wood and Royal Tunbridge Wells. Voters can go to any hub to vote in person, they just need their photo ID. It will also be possible to hand in postal votes.

RWT Together BID organised the second Tunbridge Wells Spring Clean over the final weekend in March. A spokesperson told us that the team were ‘blown away’ by the show of community spirit and that the organisation’s ‘hardy band’ of volunteers managed to collect even more litter than last year.

Twenty five businesses and I89 volunteers were involved and they clocked up an impressive 567 hours between them.

In total 113 bags of general waste were collected, and 49 bags of recycling . 111 vapes, batteries and gas cannisters were picked up along with nine hubcaps while

two community gardens were started.

Alex Green, CEO of RTWT commented: “We want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved.”

Voters will receive information about the hubs with their poll cards.

All polling stations will be open as usual on Thursday 7 May, the pilot does not replace the usual voting arrangements.

Small businesses benefit as Government sets new, bigger spending targets Small businesses across the country are set to benefit from over £7.4 billion of Government money a year by 2028.

Departments have, for the first time, set individual targets for the amount they will spend with small to medium enterprises (SMEs) – in turn boosting economic growth and delivering on the Plan for Small Business.

New targets published recently will see Government departments delivering on a key commitment in the Plan for Small Business by spending more money with small and medium sized businesses, so they can grow themselves - and grow the economy.

Departments have, for the first time, individually set direct SME spending targets and will now publish yearly progress updates ensuring they are held to account.

Those who fall behind will need to set out robust actions on how they will improve.

This is in addition to small business spending from the Ministry of Defence which will increase by a further £2.5 billion, to £7.5 billion by May 2028.

Cabinet Office Minister, Chris Ward said: “These ambitious spending targets will help ensure more Government contracts go to SMEs - keeping more money, jobs and opportunities in local communities.

We will pull every lever to support SMEs and drive growth.”

The money will go to businesses across the country, including key sectors cyber, manufacturing, finance and science.

Digital wins big at TWBC forced to appoint Active The Mobile News Awards new sports centre operator

From July 2026 Tunbridge Wells Borough Council’s three sports centres in Tunbridge Wells, Cranbrook and Paddock Wood will be managed by Serco Leisure in partnership with Leisure Solutions Community Trust .

Serco Leisure is one of the UK’s leading national operators of leisure centres and the agreement will open the door to multimillion-pound investment in the centres.

Fusion Lifestyle, the current operator, who also manage leisure facilities for councils across the country, has entered into administration. Fusion

Lifestyle has worked with TWBC since 2006, the current contract was due to end in April 2027.

A TWBC spokesperson told Tunbridge Wells Business Magazine: “While Fusion may continue operating elsewhere, since learning they may be experiencing financial difficulties the Council has been exploring options to get the best outcome for residents. We have also been working with the other councils affected and we are now coordinating with the administrator, S&W, to agree a handover date to our new operator.”

New and improved M&S food hall reopens

Be mindful of the Heads of Terms

When you are a prospective tenant looking for new business premises, you are likely to source properties through a commercial letting agent who will be marketing the property on behalf of the landlord.

M&S’ Fountains Retail Park store re-opened on April 9, following a major transformation.

The food store, which temporarily closed at the end of 2025 for works to take place, has returned with a fresh market-style design. This includes a brand-new in-store bakery and coffee counter, a cheese counter and a much wider range of fresh produce.

A dedicated Click & Collect point will also make collecting online fashion, home and beauty orders easy.

Lauren Gunn, Store Manager at M&S Tunbridge Fountains Retail Park, said: “We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to get the store ready, and we’re excited to be welcoming customers back inside.”

SEW to reassess compensation At the time of going to press it was announced that South East Water (SEW) has agreed to look at increasing a £600,000 fund for Tunbridge Wells’ businesses.

This will come as good news for all the cafes, bars, restaurants, shops, event spaces and offices that faced huge financial losses as a result of the December water outage, The announcement follows evidence being presented to SEW that the crisis resulted in a loss of around £18.6 million to the local economy. This was overseen by the town’s Liberal Democratic MP, Mike Martin.

Adult Ed courses cancelled Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has terminated most adult education courses in the town. This ends decades of classes focused on creativity and personal development for mature students.

Only courses linked to work skills are set to continue, following government funding changes and a £521k cut.

Carton recycling available At the beginning of April the council announced that residents in the borough can now recycle food and drink cartons - sometimes called Tetra Paks - by including them in the designated mixed recycling bins.

A spokesperson said: “This change is part of the Government’s Simpler Recycling plan, helping make recycling easier and more consistent across England."

Suitable premises found, you will then discuss the terms with the agent, who will produce a document called ‘Heads of Terms’ or ‘HoTs’ for short. These HoTs are a very good starting point for guidance on what the terms of the lease will be. All well and good but do bear in mind that the agents are acting for the landlord and not for you and it is therefore highly likely that the HoTs will be drafted to favour the landlord.

So, what do you do? The answer is easy – let your commercial property lawyer look at the HoTs first and certainly before you sign anything. They will normally do this without charging a fee, not out of altruism, but because they want the framework document to be something that is good for them to work with.

If you have already signed to approve the HoTs, it becomes much harder to unravel unfair points later, not least because both the landlord and the agent will believe that you have accepted all the terms without a query. It is likely that the landlord’s lawyer will also have drafted the documents to reflect the HoTs and will not take kindly to being called upon to rewrite the document.

Even before the HoTs stage, many commercial property lawyers are happy to have a chat with you and give you some pointers on what you should be looking for in a commercial lease, such as ability to sell or hand the lease on if you need to or to underlet the whole or part of the property. A tenant’s break right is also a bonus if, for whatever reason, you need to end the lease early – hopefully to move to larger premises because the business is booming.

MP shows support for better business initiatives More than 40 purpose-led business leaders gathered in Tunbridge Wells in March, for the Kent B Corp Impact Summit. The day focused on shaping a more sustainable, responsible future for our region - as Tom Chown of Digitom reports

o help mark B Corp Month, a global celebration of the B Corp movement, a special day of events was organised here in Tunbridge Wells by local businesses who meet the verified standards for social and environmental business practices – otherwise known as B Corp status.

The event at Town Hall Square was well attended with Mike Martin, Tunbridge Wells’ Liberal Democrat MP and Better Business Act supporter, welcoming delegates and showing his support for the movement.

During his speech Mr Martin emphasised the core message of the B Corp initiative which is that businesses don’t have to put profit first. They can also benefit people and communities – while still staying profitable.

He added: “People might look at B Corp and go, ‘Oh well that’s just kind of fluffy liberalism, right?’ But it’s not actually, if Image by johnknightphotography.co.uk

you have happy employees they come to work, they give their best. That profit growth that ultimately is very important if you’re running a business, that will come from employees who are happy and engaged and empowered and it’s the same in the community. If the community look at your business and see that you are a force for good they will frequent you.”

In an ever-changing technological landscape Pete Kenyon, Partner at South East and London based law firm Cripps, headquartered in Tunbridge Wells, took to the stage to explain how businesses can avoid the peril and pitfalls of using AI, putting in place guardrails to maintain professional ethics.

Impact Director Andy Stephens from frozen food producer COOK, based in Sittingbourne, explained how organisations can run measurement assessments to identify areas of continual improvement.

During the event Ali Fisher from Plans with Purpose gave an introduction to the new JEDI (Justice, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) assessment tools integrated into the new B Corp global standards.

Time to review your Estate Planning The start of a new tax year represents an ideal opportunity to review and consider your estate planning strategies – whether revising one you currently have in place or starting from scratch.

With allowances resetting and potential changes in legislation, it is always Richard Shearing best to keep an eye on your affairs, consider whether your existing arrangements remain effective and keep up to date with any changes to allowances, reliefs or reporting requirements.

A simple, yet effective strategy to consider is the annual gifting allowance which renews per tax year. This allows you to gift a certain amount in your lifetime to certain individuals, in certain circumstances, without the gift being considered as part of your estate for inheritance tax should you pass within 7 years of making said gift.

Now is also a great time to review an existing Will or, if you do not have one yet, consider making one. With life constantly changing and evolving, you may wish to consider whether your personal circumstances have changed enough to revise your Will – whether through marriage, divorce, births or changes in financial position.

This consideration should also apply to any individuals you may have named in your Will. Whether you choose to do so at a new tax year or not, it is always advised to reconsider your Will should any substantial life changes arise to ensure your wishes are still reflected accurately.

Trusts may also be worth considering during this review as they can offer greater control over your assets and how they are distributed upon your death. This may be more important for those who have minor beneficiaries or complex family dynamics. Used correctly, Trusts can also provide tax efficiencies and asset protection.

After a hearty lunch and a panel session with members from the Kent B Local community delegates were invited to take part in a voluntary litter-pick on the nearby Common. This was supported by the Friends of Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons, a community group who are actively campaigning to crowdfund and buy the Commons back from private ownership.

ast month saw the first Tunbridge Wells Business Magazine networking afternoon of 2026 take place. The quarterly event sees our regular advertisers, supporters and friends gather together to catch up and enjoy a few drinks with the team.

This time the event was hosted at Charlotte's in The Pantiles where guests feasted on delicious canapes and were treated to drinks.

Making tax-efficient gifts to grandchildren

Gifting money directly to your grandchildren could give them a valuable financial headstart. It could also be a tax-efficient way of passing on wealth to the next generation while helping to manage your estate’s inheritance tax (IHT) liability.

There’s an exemption for ‘gifts out of surplus income’ that can be used to cover recurrent costs, such as school fees.

These gifts must: — Be part of your normal expenditure — Be made from your income (not capital)

It’s expensive being young University tuition fees in England and Wales now top £9,500 a year1, while the average UK house price stood at £271,415 in March 2025 – that’s 53.8% higher than a decade ago2.

These challenges mean that gifting money directly to grandchildren could make a bigger difference to their financial security than if they were to wait for an inheritance.

How to gift money tax efficiently Leaving money through your will might be one of the least tax-efficient ways to pass on wealth, and could come too late to make a meaningful difference.

There are several ways to pass on wealth to grandchildren while you’re alive that could also help to manage IHT. • Junior ISAs and bare trusts A Junior ISA (Individual Savings Account) is a good way to save for a young grandchild’s future. While only parents or legal guardians can open one, anyone can contribute.

The annual tax-free limit for a Junior ISA is £9,000.

Alternatively, a bare trust has no investment limits.

Contributions made into bare trusts by someone who’s not the child’s parent/guardian are taxed as if they belong to the child, often resulting in minimal or no tax being due.

Once your grandchild turns 18, they can use the funds from either option as they wish.

• Lifetime gifts Annually, you can gift £3,000 IHT-free and £2,500 for a grandchild’s marriage or civil partnership. Larger gifts, called potentially exempt transfers, may be IHT exempt if you survive seven years.

— Leave you with sufficient income to maintain your standard of living.

• Buy a life assurance policy If you have surplus income, you could also fund a wholeof-life insurance policy, which is paid out on death and can provide a means to pay some of your estate’s IHT bill.

he business forum for Tunbridge Wells, enTWine, recently held its first meeting of 2026 at The Town Hall. Hosted

by Victoria Sampson from CooperBurnett LLP; Ashley Scriven from LOCH; and Lynne Gadsden from Eight Financial Advice, enTWine welcomed Alex Green, Chief Executive Officer at Royal Tunbridge Wells Together BID as its guest speaker.

RTW Together began in 2019, has three staff members and is led by a board of 14 directors, including Victoria Sampson.

The BID has a particular geographic area of Tunbridge Wells and its members are those in buildings with a rateable value of more than £15,000.

RTW Together has three strands: supporting, promoting and enhancing.

After an opportunity to ask Alex some questions, members enjoyed delicious food, provided by The Bean Bike (the catering arm to Twinn Coffee at The Town Hall).

Since enTWine was launched more than five years ago, its break-out rooms have been a part of every single meeting. They are intended to give everyone in the room a voice and an opportunity to ‘listen, share and benefit’ which is enTWine’s mantra.

At the meeting, members were asked for their business tips.

Auction for Aspens raises thousands

A

spens, a charity supporting autistic people and those with learning disabilities across the SouthEast, held a hugely successful fundraising event on March 26 in the Cripps Sky Lounge in Tunbridge Wells.

Dubbed Bubbles and Bids, the evening was generously supported by the law firm Cripps along with Clive Emson Auctioneers, Presence & Co, Flowersmiths, The Grazing Maze and Chapel Down, who provided a glass of bubbly for guests on arrival.

Attendees included the Aspens community, local businesses and also the Mayor of Tunbridge Wells, Cllr David Osborne and Mayoress Linda Seely.

The auction was led by Clive Emson Auctioneers. And a fantastic selection of prizes were up for grabs, including a football shirt signed by England Women’s player Alessia Russo, a tour and winetasting experience at Chapel Down Vineyard, and a Champagne Afternoon Tea at The Ritz.

A spokesperson for Aspens told Tunbridge Wells Business Magazine that thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended and supported the event, the charity raised over £4,250 on the night.

Robert Shanahan, Aspens’ CEO, added: “We are incredibly grateful for the warmth and generosity shown at Bubbles and Bids. Thanks to our wonderful supporters, we can now purchase a sensory swing that will make a real difference to the people we support. It was a fantastic evening that truly reflected the spirit of our community.”

“I feel so focused on my business”

Sophie Forrest-Lavery tells Eileen Leahy about what her specialist HR consultancy business, Forrest Group offers - and reveals how a 75-day lifestyle reset programme has transformed her both professionally and personally…

I

t’s a chilly and fairly overcast morning in March when I meet Sophie Forrest-Lavery, founder of Forrest Group, for our interview and photo shoot. Yet despite the inclement weather, Sophie is of an extremely sunny disposition, smiling and joking as she effortlessly poses for photographs at our chosen location of the Hotel Du Vin. She’s just returned from a skiing trip with her husband and children but that isn’t the only reason Sophie looks so well.

“Since mid-January I have been on The Six Pack Revolution nutrition and fitness programme and it’s honestly changed my life,” she enthuses in between outfit changes.

“I heard about this lifestyle reset, founded by Scott Harrison ten years ago, through a friend of mine called Helen.

She enrolled on it last year and I couldn’t believe the results she was getting so I decided to give it a go myself and I can tell you that I have honestly never felt better in my whole life.

“I’ve tried so many diets in the past but nothing has worked as well as this. My sleep has dramatically improved - as have my energy levels and clarity. I turn 50 in June and it just seemed like the right time to undertake this programme.”

But before we get into what The Six Pack Revolution is all about, and the ways in which it has helped Sophie run her

as London and across the South East,” explains Sophie.

She and her team’s collective aim is to give clients seamless, bespoke solutions for the management of their staff and business.

“Our professional consultants are all experts in their field, offering you the highest level of service that is guaranteed across all our services,” adds Sophie. ​​She tells me Forrest Group has a wide variety of clients spread across many different industries and sizes, from startups and SMEs to larger corporations. ​“We can help with all HR matters such as employment documents for new or growing businesses and dayto-day employee issues to specialist or contentious staff matters.”

Sophie, who has worked in the HR sector all of her professional career, tells me that she and her consultants have two ways of working with clients.

The first is on an ad-hoc basis where businesses can avail of Forrest Group’s services occasionally. A good example of this would be a staff disciplinary or ensuring that employment documents are reviewed and updated. The latter is something that Sophie and her colleagues are currently extremely busy with given the new Employment Rights Act that has come into effect – but more on that later.

businesses is by working as their HR department on a monthly retainer. This is ideal for operations that don’t require a permanent HR addition to their internal team, but need professional support.

“We can offer a variety of different retainers to reflect where you are in your business journey,” says Sophie.

“We can manage all your HR requirements and support your business in a way that suits it. We pride ourselves on being flexible and tailoring our services to your needs. We don’t provide generic templates for any of our documents, we instead create options that are bespoke for your business.

“Our clients really vary – we have everything from high-end hairdressers and stockbrokers to lawyers and insurance firms so there really is never a dull day in the office,” smiles Sophie.

“With consultancy work you are really exposed to a wide variety of issues. That means you have to know a lot about various sectors and importantly you have to adjust your style accordingly.”

Sophie started her career at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council before moving on to work in London and also at HR Advise Me, part of the Loch Associates Group, a local firm she credits with teaching her a lot.

“Loch is where I first experienced the consultancy element of HR and my time there was enormously helpful.”

After that Sophie worked in the capital again for many years so her industry experience is extremely comprehensive.

She was awarded Female Entrepreneur of the Year 2020 at the SME News Southern Enterprise Awards and was recently awarded Top Promoting Consultant 2025 at the Breathe Partner Awards.

After working in a number of senior roles, Sophie decided to set up Forrest HR. She reveals that the combination of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force and an introduction to her local BNI networking group turned out to be enormously helpful.

“With the introduction of GDPR I had work pretty much from the start and this was further bolstered by me joining BNI. A good friend of mine, Neil Simmons from TN Recruits, invited me along as a guest to his chapter and I loved it. I immediately became a member and found the meetings to be very beneficial.

“Because BNI works on a referral basis and groups were mainly made up of small to medium businesses (SMEs) it was a good opportunity for me. When companies get to a certain size they want to start doing things properly and putting processes and documents in place and I could see that’s where my business could benefit.”

Sophie goes on to say that with BNI you can only have one representative from a specific sector in any one chapter but you can also sub at other chapters.

“What was surprising to me was that HR was massively underrepresented at a lot of groups in Kent and East Sussex. That is why I had the idea to source HR experts in other areas of the South East to go along to their local BNI meetings in order to network, make connections and ultimately get business.

“I paid their subscriptions on the understanding they would generate business for Forrest HR. Each associate would take the majority of the client fee and then I’d take a small percentage. And at one stage, I had consultants all over the UK and became successful pretty quickly.

“It worked well for a while but then as time went on I started to notice that I was pretty much the only one generating new business. I put it down to the simple fact that HR associates don’t really like the networking aspect of doing business whereas I do! I thrive on meeting people, chasing leads and doing business development.”

really. I'd probably say either Health & Safety or Legal at the moment. Previously, it's been Training. It sort of ebbs and flows in different directions as to whatever's happening in the world - or the economy,” explains Sophie.

And with more changes coming into effect this month due to the new Employment Rights Act, Sophie says she certainly has enough work to keep her and her associates busy.

In addition to Sophie, there are three associates working on the HR side, two in legal, two in Health & Safety and one in training.

“I believe that what sets Forrest Group apart from others is our style. We are very hands on and make sure the consultants that work with us have the same ethos and approach that I do. We have extensive experience but we’re also practical. Most clients don't understand the law or what they need to navigate certain situations but we are here to help with all that.”

Reflecting upon that ethos, it’s worth noting Forrest Group has created a free, downloadable calendar of all the changes coming into effect. Existing clients and visitors to the company’s website can print it off so they know what’s coming and when.

“I guess I want to say that it’s never too late to turn things around. I had a great time in my late 30s and 40s but now as I approach turning 50 I can see that health is much more important to me.”

Sophie started the programme, which boasts 50k transformations worldwide, in mid-January and because she was already abstaining from alcohol due to doing Dry January she found the not drinking element of the plan an easy sacrifice to make. But because she and her husband usually dine out at least once a week this was more a challenge but she soon got used to it.

When it comes to changing your established eating patterns Sophie says Scott and his team provide lots of inspiring meal plans.

“You have to eat six times a day in specific windows. It’s about eating little and often and you have to track every one of your meals. You need to drink at least three litres of water daily and as well as no alcohol, the plan limits the amount of caffeine you have.”

Surprisingly you are not allowed to weigh yourself during the 75-day period but Sophie tells me that she’s worked out she has dropped at least two dress sizes since starting the plan.

When we meet for our chat, Sophie only has a couple of weeks to go and it’s clear how confident she looks and feels. She is positively beaming!

“My energy and enthusiasm are off the charts because I am sleeping so well and really enjoying the programme. When I

finish it I will aim to do five days a week following the key principles and then have a couple of days off – probably the weekend.

“Doing The Six Pack Revolution has given me the tools to live a much happier, healthier and less anxious life. I feel better than I have in 15 years and I couldn’t be in a better position to be running my business and feeling confident in myself.

VAYRO positions itself as an ‘AI native’ management company. Can you explain what this means?

Being AI native means we do not see AI as a bolt-on, a shiny app or a side project for the IT team. We see it as something that needs to be designed into the operating model of the business itself.

AI is not just about modernising a business but often about rethinking how it operates entirely. It’s helping leaders reconsider how work gets done, how people communicate, how data flows, and where human judgement should sit versus where AI can take the strain.

At VAYRO, we focus first on the impact AI can have on a business before recommending any solutions.

How do you differ from other AI enterprises?

A lot of AI companies are essentially selling tools. We focus on a more fundamental question: what does AI actually mean for the client’s business?

How do you help organisations become AI native?

We start with reality. We look at where is time being wasted, where is work duplicated, where are decisions too slow.

From there, we focus on leadership.

If leaders are not aligned and willing to change their own behaviours, the organisation will not move forward effectively. Then we focus on practical adoption. Change does not come from overwhelming businesses with tools or jargon. It comes from solving real problems and building momentum.

Without behavioural change, AI adoption is fragile and short-lived.

Which sectors are best positioned to benefit from AI adoption?

The winners will not necessarily be the largest organisations, but those most willing to rethink how they operate.

Businesses with repeatable processes, strong leadership intent and openness to change are best placed to benefit.

As a business based in the South East, how important is the regional ecosystem to your growth?

As well as manufacturing the supplest of tan fluted leather seats, polished wood and silver steering wheels and Harris Tweed dashboards and armrests, the company’s skilled workforce can also rebuild a Defender too, changing its colour and adding new and robust panelling, grills and galvanised chassis if required.

LUCARI manufactures a wide range of its components in-house at its premises in Rye, East Sussex.

Steve tells me that when he was setting up his business his principal aim was to ‘break the mould of the mainstream motor trade’ by designing vehicles that reflect a client’s lifestyle. And having everything thoroughly tailor-made to an individual’s particular specifications certainly ticks that box.

The company, which also boasts LUCARI DESIGN in its portfolio after it launched in 2017, can refurbish or rebuild vehicles and the changes are hugely impressive.

When we begin our chat Steve tells me that cars have always been a big part of

his life. But it was the summer of work experience he did at his father’s Land Rover garage in Staplehurst where he spotted a gap in the market.

“I noticed that such an iconic British brand with enormous amounts of heritage and history was slightly lacking in how the interiors were presented.

Mostly vinyl and cloth were used in place of leather, with minimal handcrafted detailing such as hand stitching.”

Steve started sourcing things on eBay and once he had turned 18 he launched LUCARI and things took off from there.

As he slowly grew his team of specialist trim experts and artisan fabricators, Steve concentrated on the UK market but a couple of years down the line he was soon exporting to the US, Australia and most of Europe. Success he says was down to the quality of the work and people spreading the word to friends, family and fellow enthusiasts.

“What we do has to be of the finest quality as our clients are just as passionate about their vehicles as we are.”

He also adds that when he employs someone they will aim to teach them numerous skills so they can turn their hand to from working in the warehouse to learning how to sew.

Steve also prides himself on being a local employer. “We have staff from all over the local area – from Hastings up to Tunbridge Wells and over to Cranbrook, to Rotherfield, Folkestone and Romney Marsh.”

Whilst the most recent Land Rover Defender was launched in 2019, Steve says that he and his team mainly work on vintage types.

“The majority of them date from between 1983 up to 2016. And we have worked on everything from classic soft top Defenders to station wagon styles and the more modern designs.”

A constant throughout all LUCARI’s work is that they will always aim to maintain the original timeless look of the vehicle – no matter how high tech the spec maybe.

And as their website and social media platforms confirm they also do a lot of research. Many of the business’s posts cite detailing such as a roof finished in Limestone Cream - a classic Land Rover

colour used from 1959-1984 as well as wheels boasting a silver edge which is something that featured on the 1999 Heritage limited edition Defenders. Their attention to detail is second to none…

Steve says clients tend to range from enthusiasts to investors but there’s also a certain amount of nostalgia involved too.

“Some of our clients might remember learning to drive in one – or perhaps a family member had one on their farm.

Whatever the scenario, there is a lot of emotional attachment associated to this particular vehicle.”

Steve goes onto point out that because the cars they work on are already preowned or sourced by themselves for clients there is no direct competition to Land Rover.

“I will admit though that our interiors are superior to theirs,” he smiles.

As well as totally kitting out the inside of a Defender with new seating, steering wheels and gadgets such as state-of-theart speakers and coffee holders, LUCARI will also customise wheels and paintwork. “ A lot of people at the moment are into Keswick Green – it’s a fairly traditional colourway for a Defender.”

And what does the future hold for LUCARI I ask him: “We want to be the go-to people in the world for this type of work. That is our vision.”

Celebrating thirty years of success From trainee solicitor to co-leader of CooperBurnett, Victoria Sampson has had a remarkable career. As she celebrates her 30th anniversary at the esteemed law firm she tells Eileen Leahy about leadership, loyalty and legacy making...

V

ictoria Sampson, co-leader of CooperBurnett LLP, celebrates a major career milestone on April 23rd this year: 30 years at the successful law firm.

“When I think about it I feel quite humbled,” she says when we meet to talk about this impressive professional achievement. “It almost doesn’t feel like it’s me that’s about to mark this anniversary.”

We’re sitting in Victoria’s office at the firm’s HQ, Napier House, right in the heart of Tunbridge Wells.

She is head of CooperBurnett’s Corporate and Commercial Services, advising on all aspects of corporate and commercial law, including mergers and acquisitions, and has co-led the company with Joseph Oates since 2018.

“It’s only when someone says to me

“

I love the camaraderie in my team just as I did all those years ago – and still do.

‘Wow 30 years!’ I have to check they are talking about me because I don’t feel I have changed – but yet everything around me has.”

Victoria, who has been President of West Kent Chamber of Commerce and Industry on two occasions, President of Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge & District Law Society and co-founder of the business networking forum enTWine, tells me she can remember her first day at the firm very clearly.

“I had just come back from travelling after having graduated law school and suddenly I was crossing the threshold at CooperBurnett to do two years of training to become a solicitor. There were feelings of excitement and anticipation.

“You quickly realise that this is a realworld moment and you are going to be dealing with genuine cases and people.

But another overriding feeling I remember is one of naivety.

“I turned up on my first day at 9.15am and was sitting in reception waiting to be received by the practice manager. I had been told my working hours were 9.30am to 5.30pm. The office was in full flow, and I thought maybe trainees had a different schedule.

“After a few days, another trainee told

me everyone actually started at 9am. The practice manager realised my offer letter had been wrong and immediately took responsibility. Straight away I learned the importance of ownership of that.”

Reflecting further, Victoria reveals another key moment was the day she qualified as a solicitor in 1998.

“You go to bed as a trainee and wake up as a qualified solicitor. That’s when you think – this is all real now.”

In 2001 she was made a salaried partner.

“It was such an active and energetic time back then. Banks were very keen to lend money to businesses so we were doing so many transactions and deals and I was leading an emerging team.”

In 2003 she took equity in the firm.

“I remember taking a deep breath and thinking, ‘I am now a part of this.’”

Victoria tells me she could have worked elsewhere but chose to stay. “For me, loyalty is such a key attribute and it felt great working here. I’ve had the support of my PA, Paula Armstrong, for the past 12 years, and her presence and that continuity is what TeamCB is all about.”

Over the three decades Victoria has been at CooperBurnett, she has helped shape a more transparent and supportive firm culture, championing different routes into law, prioritising mental health and supporting working parents.

“We are very much a family-first firm.”

Considering big changes that have happened, she says: “The most seismic shift has come from technology and how it’s changed communication. But having said that we do say, especially to our trainees, that it’s not about who emails

the most or shouts the loudest. Things have to be ordered and considered. We are still very much people focused.”

One of the things Victoria is most proud of is the firm’s charity work.

The catalyst came when she became an ambassador for children’s charity CHYPS (now known as ellenor).

“I relished that role and learned such a lot.”

Since then, CooperBurnett has supported numerous charities through fundraising challenges such as walking marathons, cycling to Paris in 24 hours and trekking up mountains. Some of the charities who have benefited include Jigsaw South East, Brain Tumour Research, Demelza and Hospice in the Weald.

“I am really proud of our charity links.

Our equity partners match every pound raised and carry out pro bono work for local causes including The Pickering Cancer Drop-In Centre and Taylor-Made Dreams.”

Before I leave, Victoria shares with me that she sends a motivational message to her team every Friday evening.

“It’s a light-hearted way of saying thank you. I love the camaraderie in my team just as I did all those years ago – and still do.”

She adds that long-standing client relationships remain hugely important.

So what’s next?

“Joseph and I will continue leading the firm and building it strategically. We’re working on two major projects: embracing AI and developing a strategic marketing plan, both with local independent businesses. It’s all part of our legacy making for the firm. I have a genuine passion for what I do and feel very lucky.”

Leading local law firm announces new charity partnership

ollowing a period of nominations and voting by everyone at the firm, CooperBurnett LLP has announced The Good Company People as its chosen charity for the next two years.

To launch the new partnership, Lucy Buck, CEO at The Good Company People visited the firm's Tunbridge Wells offices to tell TeamCB more about the support provided by the charity. There she was welcomed by CooperBurnett’s Charity Committee, Lisa Connolly, Katie Hilsdon and Ayla Clissold.

“We are really looking forward to what we can create together over the next two years” Based in Crowborough – and with its new HQ opening very soon – The Good Company People is a group of carers, community members, volunteers and people with lived experience of ageing and dementia. Its vision is ‘a world where everyone over 65 at risk of loneliness, including people experiencing cognitive changes or dementia, and those who care for them, can live healthier, happier and longer lives in their homes and communities’.

“We are thrilled and thankful to have CooperBurnett LLP onboard; this is a very exciting charity partnership with so much potential,” Lucy explained. “I can see so many parallels with the way we operate – with both The Good Company People and CooperBurnett built on trust. We meet people at pivotal moments in their lives; moments that feel uncertain and overwhelmed; moments where clarity and

The charity came about following Lucy’s experience of caring for her late Mother, Hazel, after she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease Dementia and supporting her through a system that often felt ‘clinical, disconnected’ or ‘one size fits all’.

Soon after her diagnosis, Hazel said: “I want to continue to do my hobbies, in familiar places, with people whose company I enjoy.”

When somebody first visits The Good Company People – and that ideally comes at an early stage when their world is shrinking and feeling lonely, experiencing cognitive changes or living with dementia - they are matched with a ‘concierge’ who is their single point of contact.

They get to know the new member as a person, understanding their life story, health and mobility, dementia journey, communication needs and, importantly, what they love to do and activities that bring them joy and engagement.

“Here, dignity, agency, connection and joy are not optional,” said Lucy.

The Good Company People is designed

by its members and during a single month, there are many different clubs members can engage with, depending on their interests – from snooker and cinema to craft and walking. Over the past year, more than 350 members have been supported, there’s been over 4,500 hours of connection, more than 320 clubs delivered and 53 volunteers trained.

“We were very grateful to Lucy for giving us such a passionate and engaging introduction to The Good Company People,” says Residential Property Partner and Charity Committee member, Lisa Connolly.

“We are now busy thinking of ways to raise money for this amazing charity, as well as considering our next big challenge.

Cripps strengthens commercial and technology practice

Key changes at Thomson Snell & Passmore as new Senior Partner appointed

aw firm Thomson Snell & Passmore has appointed Richard Ellard as its new Senior Partner.

Richard, who is currently Head of the Real Estate department, will take on the role from June 2026 in line with the firm’s new financial year. Richard joined the firm in 2006 and was appointed Head of the Real Estate department in 2014.

Sarah Easton, who has been at Thomson Snell & Passmore since 2010, will become Head of the Real Estate department from June.

Richard’s appointment comes as Joanna Pratt, who has held the role since 2020, reaches the end of her final term.

She will continue to contribute to the success of the firm as Head of the Family department.

A spokesperson told Tunbridge Wells Business Magazine: “As Senior Partner for six years, she guided the firm through a period of unprecedented change, taking it from 250 people and a fee income of £22m, to over 315 people and a fee income of £33m.”

Employment Rights Act putting jobs at risk say leading lawyers New incoming laws designed to improve and protect workers’ rights may be having the opposite effect. Here leading employment lawyers at Thackray Williams explain why some workers may find themselves victims...

O

ur employment team at Thackray Williams is seeing a marked rise in employers reviewing their workforce and considering restructures ahead of the new rights coming into force, as they plan for the increased cost and risk that the Employment Rights Act 2025 (ERA) introduces.

“With the next wave of changes coming into force in April, we’re seeing businesses not only look at their recruitment practices and tightening these significantly, but also considering whether

“We’re seeing recruitment freezes and increased hesitancy in taking on new staff as a result of the new Employment Rights Act” they should streamline their workforce now and/or change pay and benefits so they are in the strongest position in advance of the additional rights coming into effect,” cautions Employment Partner, Megan O’Hara.

“Enhanced employment rights are, in theory, good news for workers. However, the ability to be agile and to adapt is key for businesses to be successful, profitable and meet clients’ evolving needs,” she explains. “The enhanced rights for employees potentially impact this flexibility, so this transitional period as firms prepare for the implementation of the ERA is creating new vulnerabilities for some workers.

“As part of future-proofing their organisations, we’re seeing business leaders consider whether they should retain all the staff they currently have, and whether they can maintain current pay and benefits, given the potential costs that will come into effect as these rights come into force.

“Particularly at risk are workers in industries that rely on flexibility to scale up and down in response to fluctuating demand, such as hospitality, leisure and care,” she warns.

The ERA is introducing and extending several rights for workers. From 6 April 2026, paternity leave and unpaid parental leave (up to four weeks per year per child, up to a maximum of 18 weeks) become day-one rights. Statutory Sick Pay will also be payable from the first day of absence (currently staff need to wait three days before they can claim it).

From January 2027, employees will only need six months’ service to be able to bring a claim for unfair dismissal, compared to the current two-year requirement. At the same time, the dismissal compensation cap will be removed, meaning compensation will be unlimited.

‘Fire and rehire’ (which allows businesses to fire staff who refuse to accept revised terms and re-employ them on the new conditions) will be severely restricted.

Changes to existing terms regarding pay, pensions, hours and time off will require employees’ consent. Dismissal will not be an option if those changes are not agreed, unless the business is facing such severe financial difficulties that it may mean it cannot carry on as a going concern without such changes.

‘Zero hours’ contracts will be severely curtailed; employers will need to offer guaranteed hours reflecting a regular work pattern, give reasonable notice of shifts and provide compensation if shifts are cancelled, moved or cut short at short notice.

“I want to give back and make a difference” Sarah Raine talks to Carole Winter about her volunteering work for the charity Taylor-Made Dreams Now you are retired from your impressive career in the arts you’re a volunteer and ambassador for TaylorMade Dreams. Tell us about that…

As a volunteer, I use my event management skills and fundraising experience together with past connections to support the charity’s aims. I help raise awareness for the charity at events such as the Pantiles Classic Car Rally, or speaking at networking meetings.

Last year, I supported Taylor Made Dreams (TMD) fundraiser, Dave Richardson, to help deliver the Dragonfly Ball in Brighton. I am currently working with fellow volunteers, Dee and Philippa, on ‘An Evening of Summer Music’ sung by the Choir of King’s College London on June 5.

Sometimes volunteering is less glamorous though! Last week I was in the kitchen washing up for the International Women’s Day Tea for Tay! What made you decide to volunteer for the charity?

I was blessed with a lucky career, and with that luck comes gratitude. I want to give back and make a difference by being part of a caring community.

I’ve spoken about inspirational leaders, and I haven’t met anyone more so than Suzi Mitchell, founder and CEO of TMD. When she speaks of her

Why do you think fewer people are volunteering?

I think Covid-19 affected people’s outlook, and lifestyles have changed, money is tighter. People are still giving their time, but it’s less structured. Young people are driven by responsive activism, and at the other end of the scale, people are looking after elderly relatives and retiring later, so demands on their time are higher.

Some people are fearful they don’t have anything to offer, but I disagree. At TMD we have people with a range of skills, from driving vans, to wrapping gifts to bucket

collecting, but we all share one common goal which is to make a difference.

What do you find rewarding about the role?

The people! Plus, every month volunteers receive an update on the charity’s activities, I find it very humbling, and it definitely makes me strive to do more. As a retired person, it is important to stay active and live your values. I think volunteering aids health and wellbeing, gives purpose, makes you grateful - and one’s lifetime of skills can really benefit others.

Discover more about Carole Winter’s impressive career in the arts: I’ve been lucky to have had a rich career, working alongside incredible, visionary people. After graduating, I moved to London to find work in theatre, knocking on every Stage Door before bagging a dream job at the National Theatre. Looking back, it was the luckiest moment of my life, because it introduced me to so many inspirational people who became instrumental in my journey, including my husband, the brilliant actor Tony Haygarth.

In 1989, I joined Comic Relief as Head of Talent. It was an electric time, hot on the heels of Band Aid, and Richard Curtis and Lenny Henry had just launched the first Red Nose Day with comedians like Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. These were trailblazing days for fundraising, creating the blueprint now echoed by many charities, including Children in Need.

In ’96, I jumped off a creative cliff

to produce my first commercial play, Twelve Angry Men, directed by Harold Pinter. I was 39, and it was still relatively rare to see women producers working in the West End. I’m amazed at the risks I took and still pinch myself to believe I went on to co‑produce over 30 shows with some of the top creatives in the country.

When I moved to Kent, I lived in an Oast House with my two daughters: Katie (co‑owner of ClueCracker and a professional puppeteer) and Becky

(Manager of ClueCracker, face‑painter extraordinaire and pub quizmaster at The Royal Oak).

I moved into Tunbridge Wells when Tony sadly died, and it coincided with a new role as Producer in the Culture team at TWBC, where I was instrumental in the opening of The Amelia Scott and the inaugural TW Literary Festival.

Now I am happily retired and love being part of my community through volunteering as an Ambassador for TMD and Trustee of DAVSS.

Strong community response as Commons sale process continues

M

ore than 3,000 residents pledged their support for a community-led bid to purchase Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons, marking one of the most significant public responses to a local asset sale in recent years.

The Commons were brought to market earlier this year by their private owner. In response, the Friends of Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons prepared and submitted a community bid, shaped by both the legal framework governing the land and the long-term responsibilities of ownership.

The bid was developed during the six-month moratorium period triggered by the Commons’ designation as an Asset of Community Value (ACV), which formally ended on 26th March 2026.

This mechanism provided time for a community group to assemble a credible proposal, although the wider sales process itself continues beyond that point.

The Friends have since confirmed that the vendor is progressing discussions with other bidders. While this is a normal feature of a competitive process, it means the community bid is not currently being

Assets of this nature, combining environmental, legal and public access considerations, typically require detailed due diligence, and transactions can evolve over time. The Friends have indicated that their preparations remain in place, maintaining a credible and deliverable community ownership option as this case progresses.

What’s in the Envelope?

A PlainEnglish ATED Reminder

by Darren Austin at Synergee April brings an important — and often overlooked — reporting deadline for companies that own highvalue UK residential property: the Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED) return.

ATED applies mainly to companies (and other “non-natural persons”) that own UK residential property valued at more than £500,000. Even where no tax is ultimately payable, a return is frequently still required.

In practical terms, if a company owns one or more residential properties and any individual dwelling exceeds £500,000 in value, HMRC will usually expect an ATED return to be filed unless the company is exempt (for example, certain charitable companies).

Importantly, a return may be required even where the tax charge is reduced to nil, as reliefs must be actively claimed. The most common reliefs apply where the property is: • Let to a third party on a commercial basis as part of a property rental business • Being redeveloped, or held as trading stock by a property developer

The starting point is to consider whether the company owned a qualifying property on 1 April 2026.

• Properties acquired before 1 April 2022 are assessed using their market value at 1 April 2022 • Properties acquired on or after 2 April 2022 are assessed using their purchase price If the £500,000 threshold is met, the ATED return for the year 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 must be submitted by 30 April 2026 to avoid penalties. Returns are filed online, and companies can authorise their accountant to deal with this on their behalf.

Where no relief applies, ATED becomes payable, starting at £4,600 for properties valued between £500,000 and £1 million, increasing sharply as values rise.

Finally, even where a company does not currently own a qualifying property, it is worth noting that a return is required within 30 days of acquisition if a relevant property is purchased.

f you mention BNI in a room full of business owners, you’ll often get mixed reactions. Some people absolutely love it. Others dismiss it before they’ve even tried it. In many ways, BNI is a bit like Marmite: ultimately it divides opinion.

But the truth is, much of that scepticism comes from misunderstanding or simply not knowing what the experience is actually like.

BNI is built on a simple principle: businesses supporting each other through trusted referrals. Instead of traditional networking where people exchange business cards and hope for the best, BNI creates a structured environment where members actively look for opportunities for one another.

When you sit in a BNI meeting, you’re in a room full of business owners who are effectively part of your extended sales team. Everyone is listening for opportunities, introductions, and connections that could help other members grow.

Of course, there are a few common objections people raise.

Plateful Nutrition began as a blog back in 2014, where I shared my own journey with nutrition and lifestyle changes.

Nutrition and a healthier way of living completely transformed my life and led me to shift from a career in marketing to starting my own business.

I became deeply curious about how nutrition, habits and lifestyle are interconnected.

After completing my studies in Holistic Nutrition in Luxembourg in 2020, I began offering nutrition consultations and coaching programmes. My intention was to create a different path: one that felt empowering and supportive.

Through Plateful Nutrition, I help busy professionals and individuals reconnect with their health through nutrition, lifestyle alignment and sustainable habit changes.

For me, it begins with the relationship we have with ourselves. The choices we make around food and lifestyle are an expression of that relationship.

My business sits at the intersection of nutrition as a science and eating as a human behaviour.

Eating is not just about calories and nutrients – it is a deeply emotional act.

I believe food should be a source of joy, connection and nourishment.

Understanding the relationship a client has with food plays a key role in the frameworks I design. Many people know what they should eat, but struggle with consistency, stress eating, or habits that no longer support their wellbeing.

It’s the realisation that health isn’t something we constantly chase. It’s something we learn to live.

My work includes one-to-one nutrition and lifestyle assessments and longer-term coaching programmes. Each person comes with their own health history, lifestyle, challenges and goals. Diet cannot be looked at in isolation from life; it is part of it.

Through detailed assessments I explore how a client’s diet and lifestyle are either supporting their needs or contributing to health concerns. We discuss stress response, sleep, exercise, daily habits and the nervous system.

With my clients, I go deeper than motivation. I ask a simple but powerful question: Who do you want to become?

From there we shape the identity of that future self. How does this person eat? How do they move? How do they respond to stress? How do they take care of themselves?

For professionals I offer workshops and cooking demonstrations. I’ve worked with companies of all sizes – from SMEs to international organisations – on topics such as nutrition for productivity and stress resilience, brain-supportive nutrition, and practical nutrition for women in business.

I also run demonstrations showing how to create balanced, nutrient-dense lunches for the workday. In some cases I provide workplace consultancy, such as reviewing office snacks or evaluating lunch options.

Something as simple as how lunch happens in the workplace can make a difference. Do employees eat mindfully, or

quickly at their desks? Is there a dedicated space? Are nourishing options available?

My goal is to create a framework that feels sustainable and enjoyable.

Education is key. Once clients understand why they feel the way they do, something shifts. They begin working with their body rather than against it.

Ultimately, I want them to leave feeling well, energised and confident. When people feel good, they are more likely to sustain their habits. This isn’t about a short restrictive diet – it’s about building a way of eating and living that truly works.

When clients step into that identity, the work becomes transformative. It’s no longer just about food – it becomes an evolution of how they live.

I work with most clients online, beginning with a complimentary discovery call via my website.

I also see clients in person and collaborate with local businesses to host workshops and cooking demonstrations.

Last year we had events at The Beacon and Caracol Glamping.

Recently I launched an online community on Substack where I share nutrition protocols, deep dives into health topics, recipes and reflections.

When clients begin nourishing themselves properly and working with their body rather than against it, everything begins to change.

I

f you're a landlord in England, you need to pay attention. The Renters' Rights Act comes into force on May 1st.

This is, without question, the biggest shake-up to the private rental sector in a generation. We're talking about fundamental changes to how tenancies work, how evictions are handled, and what your rights as a landlord actually look like going forward. If you haven't started preparing, now is the time.

The headline change, and the one that will affect every landlord in England, is the abolition of Section 21. From May 1, you will no longer be able to evict a tenant without a legally valid reason. No-fault evictions are gone.

Landlords who go into May 1st unprepared will find themselves in a much more difficult position than those who have taken steps to protect themselves Alongside that, fixed-term assured short hold tenancies are being replaced with rolling periodic tenancies. That means no fixed end dates. Tenants can leave with two months' notice at any point, which shifts a significant amount of control away from landlords. Rent increases will also be limited to once per year, and you'll need to follow a formal Section 13 notice process to implement them.

There are other changes too: new rules around pets, anti-discrimination measures for tenants with children or those receiving benefits, and restrictions on how much rent can be requested upfront. The landscape is changing, and it's changing all at once.

What Should You Do Right Now?

Here's the thing: this legislation affects you whether you're ready for it or not. So let's talk about what you can actually do in the time that's left.

Get a letting agent - This is genuinely the single most impactful step you can take. A professional letting agent is as legally exposed as you are if things go wrong, which means their incentive to get this right is just as strong as yours.

They'll manage compliance, handle documentation correctly, and ensure you're following the right processes under the new rules from day one.

Get rent guarantee insurance - With Section 21 gone, removing a non-paying tenant is going to take longer and cost more. Rent guarantee insurance protects your income if a tenant stops paying, covering losses while possession proceedings work their way through the courts. In this new environment, it isn't optional. It's essential.

Consider whether a limited company structure makes sense for you - This won't be right for everyone, but if you own multiple properties or are looking to expand your portfolio, holding them through a limited company can offer meaningful tax advantages. Speak to a

property-specialist accountant to work out whether the numbers stack up for your situation.

To understand the future it helps to look back at the past From world wars to financial crashes and the recent pandemic the UK housing market has weathered its fair share of tumultuous times. And now, as fresh geopolitical tensions dominate, Deborah Richards of Maddisons Residential explains why history offers some valuable insight into what really drives property trends...

W

ith the current war in Iran dominating headlines and feeding through into higher energy costs and renewed volatility in mortgage pricing, it’s fair to ask if this is the kind of event that derails the UK housing market?

We’ve already seen lenders react quickly, with reports of hundreds of mortgage products being withdrawn and average fixed rates moving above 5%. However, to understand what happens next, it helps to look back, as history suggests it’s rarely the headline itself that affects the market, but the knockon effects on sentiment, affordability and the availability of finance.

World War I brought early government intervention. In a property landscape dominated by tenant occupied properties, rent controls were introduced in 1915, which restricted many rents to August 1914 levels, and controls in various forms continued for some homes until 1989. This dramatically shaped landlord behaviour and investment in the private rented sector.

After World War II, the challenge wasn’t demand but shortage. Wartime damage and demographic pressures meant there were simply too few homes, with one estimate that around 750,000 new homes were needed. The response was rapid repairs, prefabricated homes and new towns. Social housebuilding accelerated, and 4.4 million social homes were built in the 35 years after WWII: an extraordinary supply programme by today’s standards.

Move forward to the late 1980s and early 1990s and the rising cost of borrowing money, which hugely impacted transaction levels, indeed there were nearly 40% fewer residential sales in England and Wales between 1988 and 1991, coupled with rising repossessions as homeowners struggled to meet their mortgage commitments.

In 2008 to 2009, the global financial crisis delivered the sharpest modern shock.

The pandemic was different: activity paused, then suddenly boomed! The stamp duty holiday combined with a re-evaluation of ‘home’ resulted in a dominant sellers’ market, where transaction levels and prices soared.

Then came September 2022 and the miniBudget: a reminder of how quickly mortgage pricing can shift. Buyers had to evaluate their affordability and as a result, house prices fell and the market swung

swiftly to one of difficulty.

And now we have the war in Iran, where higher oil prices and uncertainty are influencing inflation expectations, and in turn mortgage pricing. However, locally, Tunbridge Wells is often led by family buyers, whose moves are typically more needs-driven, rooted in schooling, space and commuting ease rather than a purely optional upgrade. That means activity remains resilient even when sentiment wobbles, although pricing becomes sharper and buyers are quicker to reject anything optimistic.

So, what does a century of upheaval tell us about the current geopolitical uncertainty? The war may be influencing the cost and psychology of moving, but the evidence so far suggests it is not stopping needs-driven buyers from pressing forward. eeling that post winter drag - especially in terms of my complexion - I was delighted to be invited by The Grand Hotel in Eastbourne to experience an OSKIA Revitalising Super C Facial.

After months of putting up with rather lacklustre looking skin due to the inclement weather and very little down time, this treatment sounded like the perfect pick-me-up. And as The Grand is one of my favourite hotels in the South East, and only an hour’s drive from Tunbridge Wells, I needed no persuading to go along and try it.

Before I get into what the facial involved a little bit of history on The Grand – or The White Palace as it is affectionally nicknamed.

The OSKIA Revitalising Super C Facial is an extremely hydrating one packed full of skin-loving nutrients that deliver instant anti-ageing results Established in 1877 and located on Eastbourne’s smart King Edward’s Parade, it is the South East coast’s only five-star hotel. Over the years its gilded doors have welcomed many guests including a few famous ones too: French composer Monsieur Claude Debussy, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Charlie Chaplin and Dame Helen Mirren have all stayed at this magnificent hotel which champions timeless luxury and exceptional service.

Part of the Elite Hotels group, The Grand boasts a sizeable spa and health club which includes an indoor swimming pool (there is also an outdoor one in the grounds). As well as OSKIA the spa offers ishga treatments. This is a luxury organic skincare brand from the Hebrides.

I arrive at The Grand Hotel spa and am greeted by the friendly reception team who hand me a robe and slippers.

Once ready I then meet Alice who will be carrying out my treatment.

OSKIA is a British brand founded in 2009 by former food journalist Georgie Cleeve.

Believing that optimal nutrition is the key to radiant looking skin, OSKIA products ‘combine bio-nutritional expertise with

naturally derived, bio-identical ingredients to create high performance formulations.’

Each product is formulated with OSKIA’s unique signature MSM Regen complex.

This is a blend of vitamins, minerals, peptides and amino acids which support skin cell renewal, boost radiance and ultimately strengthen the skin’s barrier.

Alice ushers me into the treatment room and after filling out a health and safety questionnaire, she explains the benefits of the OSKIA Revitalising Super C facial. It’s an extremely hydrating one packed full of skin-loving nutrients that deliver instant results.

She starts the treatment with OSKIA’s Perfect Cleanser and the brand’s Vitamin Eye Make Up to gently remove all traces of foundation, mascara and eyeshadow.

Next up is the Micro Exfoliating Balm.

Alice applies it all over my face and neck and unlike other exfoliators that can feel harsh, this is made up of micro silica and MSM particles. Just like all OSKIA products it’s brimming with natural ingredients to give your skin the ultimate glow-up and protect it against anti-ageing. This rich balm turns silky in texture once it comes into contact with water.

Alice’s cleansing technique is so relaxing I soon feel myself drifting off.

Feeling super zen she then applies the OSKIA Renaissance Mask which contains AHA and enzymes to gently rid skin of dead cells and to promote long-lasting luminosity.

After a few blissful minutes of letting the Renaissance Mask work its magic it’s time to remove it and treat my skin to OSKIA’s Super C Capsules. Now, this is where the turbo charging for one’s complexion comes in as each capsule contains a rich mix of nutrients and actives to transform dull and tired looking skin into a far

brighter and plumper affair.

I take a look in the mirror and am very pleased with the face I see staring back at me. It’s one that boasts luminosity – and no longer looks lacklustre - and there’s also a pleasingly more sculpted appearance to it too. I look forward to returning to The Grand Hotel to try out the other OSKIA and ishga treatments on offer at this charming spa very soon.

A rock solid garden design Tim Sykes of Gardenproud reveals how he turned a run-of-the-mill English garden into a more exotic one courtesy of some clever planting and planning...

A

sloping lawned entrance to a large detached property and nice rockery wall were just the inspiration needed to spur on some fresh thinking to transform this house’s street appeal.

Influenced greatly by the love of the Delos Garden at Sissinghurst, redesigned and transformed recently by Dan Pearson.

It was also inspired by the famous Gravel Garden created by Beth Chatto, at her home in Essex.

The planting plan was inspired by both the clients’ favourite flowers and their preferred colour palette We designed the entrance to the house to include a much enlarged rockery with rustic steps leading up to a platform from which the plants could easily be reached and tended to. Key to creating the new shape and to retaining the soil were the selection of various large feature rocks.

These were sourced locally direct from one of Gallaghers Quarries.

These huge rocks in Kentish Ragstone, some 1.5m in size, weighed in a significant amount and required some very careful handling and positioning.

Suffice to say we needed a lorry with a powerful crane, and a large digger, and some very accommodating neighbours!

But it was all worth it as the rocks really help define the garden shape. The step treads, also from the same quarry, were a very lucky find. These are all about 100-

120mm thick scab ends.

These are slivers of Ragstone cut from the edges of huge boulders that have been shaped into regularised forms, so often treated as waste, but we were recycling them into steps! The rustic edge finish of these create a naturalistic form that fitted our scheme perfectly. To help give each tread more grip and enhance the rustic appeal each scab end is flamed on the tread surface.

Once the hard landscaping was in place we were able to move around the topsoil to create our layering and finished landscape. We were very lucky with the quality of the topsoil, so the only additive we needed was plenty of planting compost, then a decorative mulch of beautiful Yorkshire Cream gravel was added to give the whole scheme that Mediterranean look and help retain moisture.

The planting hugs the rocks perfectly, accentuating and softening their craggy features and creating the beautiful but distinctive entrance our client hankered for.

Aggregates, Rocks and Soils were all sourced and supplied by Corker Outdoor Living. Plants were kindly supplied by Provender and Capel Cottage Nurseries.

Tell us what you do at Trinity?

I have the lovely job of helping look after the programme of work we do with young people at Trinity, whether that’s going into schools for workshops, working with our youngest performers in our weekly drama workshops or overseeing our wonderful team who bring our shows to life alongside our very talented Backstage Youth Theatre, there’s never a dull day.

Many people know Trinity for it’s outstanding youth theatre, but there’s so much more available for young people. What are the highlights coming up?

We are really lucky to get to work with a range of artists and performance makers who come and deliver lots of workshops for us, particular highlights coming up include, Introduction to Animation for children in school years 3 – 6 with artist Hannah Whittaker where she guides them into the world of stop motion, and we are thrilled to be welcoming star of the Westend hit Operation Mincemeat Danny Becker to run a workshop on the show for teenagers, (we also have a session for adults so they don’t miss out on the fun either!) We regularly run our Musical Mornings which are a great opportunity to see what performing on stage is like, we have a Disney themed one coming up in May which will be great fun!

What are the opportunities for young people who have no previous experience?

All of our activities are aimed at young people who can join us at any level of experience, whether you’ve been performing for years or have never stepped foot on stage. We have a fantastic group of professionals who work with the young people and develop

their confidence and technique, as well as a welcoming community who are all supportive and caring towards each other.

And if performing isn’t your thing we run Backstage Youth Theatre sessions where you can take part with everything from costume making and stage management to running the lights and sound.

What are the benefits for young people in taking part in one of the workshops or productions/getting involved?

The increase in confidence, self-belief and perseverance we see in the young people is amazing. Theatre is such a powerful tool which can help in so many areas of life from public speaking and presentation skills to empathy and how to communicate effectively with others. In a time where I think we need to see things from other people’s perspectives and have empathy for each other, theatre is one of the greatest tools to help build those skills and see things from someone else’s shoes.

Can you tell us about the community outreach work that you do across schools?

We are lucky enough to deliver a

programme called Speech Bubbles in local primary schools which are sessions for children with speech, language and communication needs in key stage one, using drama as a tool to build their confidence, teamwork and help tackle those communication needs through storytelling. We also run wonderful Show in a Week projects.

These projects also run where we put on several performances with a class over a year and getting to see their confidence develop through each show is so exciting.

If you had one piece of advice for a young person who is nervous about meeting new people but wants to have a go, what would you say?

Theatre has a wonderful power in bringing people together and you might just find your new tribe without really expecting to. There is nothing quite like quiet nervous laughter with your friends backstage as the curtain comes up, just before a show is about to begin, or the tears at the end of a final performance as everyone becomes part of that show family and can’t quite believe it’s over, it is really quite magical. So, give it a go, you never know where it might take you!

The Taylor-Made Dreams team tell us about the success of their recent Tea for Tay event which they host annually in order to celebrate International Women’s Day and to raise vital funds and awareness of the charity...

he annual Celebration of Women Vintage Tea for Tay raises awareness for International Women’s Day, whilst also supporting every service we provide at Taylor-Made Dreams (TMD).

Taylor-Made Dreams’ CEO, Suzi Mitchell, believes in supporting the community that has helped to grow this charity, to work together for a stronger collaborative effort for both causes.

services had. Debbie Waite, a motivational speaker and exec coach, gave an inspiring talk on female empowerment, and our special guest, BBC presenter and actress Claudia Sermbezis, spoke about her experiences throughout her incredible tv career.

This amount can achieve a lot.

Everything from fulfilling a TMD Warrior’s wish list, providing memory making days out for the whole family to gifting them their favourite toys or technology.

The sum raised will also help the charity provide multiple activity days for its Sibling Support Service, such as theme parks or musicals.

“With support like this, we can truly achieve a lot. Every Taylor-Made Dreams event you attend allows us to continue providing our 10 core services for the families that we serve. Dream days out, Sibling Support Service outings, accessible technology, the medical travel fund and so much more.”

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: TMD’S Tayathalon – June 14th TMD events run throughout the year, with our newest and soonest event the ‘Tayathlon’ just around the corner on the 14th of June.
