Central Area Senior Center Newsletter

Greeting om the Director, A Year In Review Throughout 2020 and 2021, CASC was able to adapt our programming and activities to be er serve seniors during a challenging year. Owing to the Coronavirus and the need for spatial separation, CASC adapted all programs and activities to serve seniors. No longer could we offer congregate meals as a mainstay for socialization or our regular programs and activities. We shiſted our Community Dining lunch program to a take -out and delivery program. We added grocery deliveries to our lineup. We consulted with King County Public Health and Pharmacists to figure out how to avail our members with Coronavirus testing and later when shots became available how to facilitate ge ing our members vaccinated. Presently we are offering Booster Shots. In 2020, we finally came to agreement on the negotiated language, terms and conditions for the transfer and sale of the building and property. Mayor Durkan recommended a transmi al of the property to the Sea le City Council, and they unanimously voted to affirm the transfer of the building and property to us with the agreed upon terms. Board President Barbara Peete, board member Winona Hollins -Hauge, and I went downtown on December 15 th to the City’s office of Department of Finance and Administrative Services. The ownership papers for the building and property were signed by me with the title given to Central Area Senior Center. It now belongs to us. In reflection the arduous journey of fiſty-one years was over. We are launching a “New Journey” to honor the work of those who started the journey by cementing and securing their legacy as we create our own legacy of ensuring the future of the building, property, programs, activities, and vision of where we are going rooted in the knowledge of the journey to date, our victories, and our collective responsibility to safeguard the Central Area Senior Center for those who are yet to come . This is an all-hands-on deck effort, each one of us must help move us forward in Celebrating our Successes and in being Stewards willing to offer their time, skills, knowledge, financial and human resources to the Central. It will take our collective and organized energy to maintain and create the desired future we seek together.

About Central Area Senior Center

"Ours is the struggle of a lifetime, or maybe even many lifetimes, and each one of us in every generation must do our part." — John Lewis The Central Area Senior Center {CASC), aka {The Central), legacy of community service began in 1968 when African American civic activists observed that the Central District needed a place for our elders to meet and socialize. They leased the empty property at 500 30th Avenue South and petitioned the City to support this vital community need. The City responded. In 1975, Mayor Wes Uhlman used money supported by Washington's voters to buy the property and lease it to The Central. He wrote in a letter to the City Council that this purchase would establish a "permanent home" for The Central. From our beginnings, we knew The Central would be a place of support, community, fellowship, and celebration. That is still our purpose, and we intend to hold onto it long into the future. Beginning in 2014, with fresh and determined leadership, The Central launched a drive for full self-determination and petitioned the City Council in 2018 for ownership of the building and property. The City Council responded with a Resolution to do just that. The community showed up in force to demand the Council approve the transfer. Letters poured into the Council and the Mayor's office in support as well. CASC supporters really showed their commitment when The Central had to raise $55,000 in a single week to meet a City deadline. The members and community raised over $106,000 in that week. It took two more years of additional advocacy efforts on the part of the members, community, and friends, however, in the era of Black Lives Matter, the Mayor agreed to transfer the title to us. At the end of 2020, the City Council passed an ordinance, which Mayor Durkan signed, transferring the property deed to us on December 15, 2020. CASC engages and enriches the communities of mature and older adults in Seattle's Central District and the African American elder population throughout the Pacific Northwest through programs and opportunities that help people live rich, healthy, and fulfilling lives as they age 4

surrounded by a beautiful setting and in a culturally diverse and fun environment. Our mission is to infuse warm friendships, healthy activities, and joyful experiences into the lives of mature adults. Activities include exercise programs, computer classes, card games and clubs, dance classes, recreationaltrips, food, fun, laughter and much more. CASC also serves as a neighborhood gathering place for non-profit, civic, and social organizations. A rich diversity of neighborhood groups and individuals access the centerdaily. They come to participate in community meetings, attend wedding receptions, birthday parties, Green Dolphin Lounge, extraordinary events and to hear from the Mayor or a City Council member at a Candidates Forum, a Leschi Community Council meeting and/or a Seattle Central Area Neighborhood District meeting. On any given day reflected at the center is the rich diversity, of age, race, class, culture, gender, and diversity of thought. As a community gathering place, CASC engages, serves, and bridges the gaps of the historical founders of the center and that of new and emerging community’s while celebrating what each one brings to a changing community landscape.

CENTRAL CAFE Cafe Central, CASC's in house-kitchen, serves hot meals, cooked from scratch five days per week. On Soul Food Tuesday's members and guests delight in an assortment of tradi onal Soul Food Cuisine. Meet Anthony Cryer

Anthony Cryer is the newest staff member of the Central Area Senior Center. He joined the center in late spring as the Social Worker. Anthony was born in New Orleans, but grew up in the Central District of Seattle. He attended Franklin High School and maintains that school spirit in a mist of Garfield Bulldogs. Go Quakers is his motto. Following High School, he attended Warner Pacific University in Portland, Oregon. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, traveling, and shopping. Anthony describes himself as compassionate, funny, and giving. He has worked as a Social Worker and Case Manager since 1990. According to Anthony, “I like being a Social Worker because it combines the best aspects of respecting my fellow person with the ability to help people in a meaningful way.” “I find it extremely rewarding to be able to meet members, hear their concerns, and then take tangible steps to assist them in improving their circumstances through life transitions.” During each office visit, my goal is to instill confidence in my client and to let them know that I am always available to them if they have concerns or, need support. As a member of the Central Area Senior Team, I feel lucky to be a part of a program that is willing to go the extra mile for the community. I am generally available Monday-Friday from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. Call (206) 726.4926 or email me at Anthonyc@casrcenter.org. I can help with the following: • Case management • Senior Housing • Caregiver Support • Memory Loss Resources • Mental Health Referrals and Support • Home Care Options • Medicare/Medicaid • Legal Referrals • Emergency Assistance When asked how he was liking CASC so far, Anthony replied, “I love it! I love the History; I love the energy and I love the work. I look forward to coming into the Center every day because for me I learn something new every day. I have learned that “No matter what, every Member has a story, and what’s on the table in front of you isn’t always the issue at hand.” 7

When asked if he had anything else he would like to share, he said; “YES! My two proudest moments were when one of the Members made the comment “Man! You are easy to talk to, this place is like a second family! and Secondly, “Seeing my mom find new life as a Volunteer at the Center.”

Being Garifuna, he expressed that it was hard for him to find his place here in America. However, being around the seniors here at The Central, Rony has been "reborn." "When I came here to the Central Area Senior Center, they started calling me an old soul because I understand where they're coming from. The things they grew up with, I grew up with; the struggles that they were going through, I went through."

New Staff Member: Abdinasir Mohamed, Bookkeeper Abdinasir's skills in management and accoun ng have transferred over well to his current posi on at the Central Area Senior Center. He likes people and finds that he always learns new things from the people he interacts and talks with.

Abdinasir Mohamed joined the team as Bookkeeper earlier this year. He has been in Sea le since 2018 and loves it here. Abdinasir grew up in a small town in Somalia. With his father's promo on he moved his family to the capital city. A er finishing high school, he moved to India and received his Master's in Business Administra on. His dad hired him back to Somalia. He stayed for some me before star ng his own freigh ng business in Kenya transpor ng goods to and from different East African countries.

"I learn from people all the me; the experience helps me to work in the United States. In management, I deal with the customer as well as my employees. When I came to the US, I transferred some of my experience from my other jobs in Somalia, such as management and it helped me here in the US." What Abdinasir appreciates most about working at The Central is our mandate to always help other people. This culture reminds him of common African tradi ons to not live as an individual but as a community.

Abdinasir moved to Minnesota in 2007. "In my long-standing tradi ons, if somebody has a problem, that problem belongs to the whole community. The community must sit together and produce a solu on for a par cular issue. When I came h ere, I see people are family.”

"When I came it was snowing; this was the first me in my life I saw snow.” In Minnesota, he gained experience at a non-profit, Lutheran Social Services handling payroll and administra ve du es. A conference for work brought him to Sea le. He had no inten ons of staying. But he liked the weather; it reminded him of the climate at home. Friends convinced him to move to Sea le.

In the Somali culture, the community takes care of the elders as well, like we do at the senior center. "They take care of us when we were a child and then they raise us as one of theirs. That is what I like about coming here, the way staff treat the people and the way the people .

"I never thought I would leave Somalia, but I liked this state and I want to stay here for the rest of my life.” Seeking to upgrade his educa on, Abdinasir returned to school and received another degree in Accoun ng and Business Administra on. He specialized in Finance at Highline College and Central Washington University. The company where he worked, Worldwide Flight Service did not have an accoun ng posi on for him. He saw the adver sement at CASC seeking a bookkeeper and applied. "It's a good place to work, I've met nice people. My col leagues are good, it's a good environment.” 12
