ADEFUA PRESENTS

REUNION:

CONTINUING THE LEGACY! Directed by Nailah Bulley Mistress of Ceremonies - Monique Franklin Libations - Iya Omitosin Ifasadun King

Part One BREAKING NEWS ALERT - The Reunion of Odunde 2021 is upon us. DRUM CALL - Inviting the village to gather and welcome our ancestors to become a part of this iconic celebration of life. Ajaja is a dance that communicates unity by stepping into the earth and singing from the legacy work of Babatunde Olatunji and his Drums of Passion. Upon the delivery of libation, we are grateful for all things, Asé! AJAJA - Processional Ensemble. Invocation to the Spirits of our Ancestors. LIBATION - Paying homage and welcome our families of the past. THE VILLAGE - Generational love and grace. DENKO - Mother Ashanti sings about the love and beauty of the children. WOLOSSODON- Women celebrating the work of Wolosso people of Mali, West Africa. Choreography from Oakland’s very own Franchesska Berry displaying the feminine essence. WATER PART 1 - A dance collage of Adefua’s dance favorites, re-mixed and choreographed by Nailah.

- Intermission

Part Two LAMBA (DEJELIYAH) – The dance of the Djeli people. Oral historian, Boka Kouyate, sings the song of his strong lineage from the Manden region, which dates to the 12th century in West Africa. BALAPHONE INSTRUMENTAL - Featuring award-winning artist Naby Camara. WATER PART 2 - A dance collage of ADEFUA’s favorites dance. A continuation of Part 1. LANGUAGE OF THE DRUM - A fascinating Djembe orchestration. The drummers are artistic messengers of culture that center the sacred cultures within a village and society. ODUNDE-ODUNDE VIDEO MONTAGE - ADEFUA Celebrates 36 years of Odunde. The harvest song and dance are performed during the planting of new crops. Through the movements of the dance and music, people gather to give thanks and offerings. They pray that rain will fall so that the crops may be better for the following year. BAO - The forest dance done originally from the Toma people of Guinea. TIMINI / MENDIANI - A Coming of Age Celebration for the young girls in the village. A coming of age is when our adolescents bring honor and maturity into the community. This beautiful transformation sustains a productive family life. -2-

Community Spotlight ‘A Corner to highlight Partnerships with Adefua’ Naby Camara, Griot from Guinea Naby comes from a lineage of persons known in West Africa as griots (pronounced gree'-oh.) Besides being excellent musicians, griots are verbal artisans, oral historians, and the guardians of centuries-old traditions. Naby is a griot, as are his brothers, their father before them, his father before him, and so on. In addition to being trained as a master musician, Naby also knows the stories and histories of his people. He is a treasure of talent and knowledge. Mr. Camara is a two-time recipient (1995 and 2004) of the Juno Award for Best Global Album. Awarded for "outstanding achievements in the record industry," the Juno Award can be considered Canada's equivalent to the American Grammy. It is one of the highest achievement awards given for recorded music in Canada. His account (for performance bookings and other information) is ballafon@hotmail.com.

Nailah “Oni” Bulley, Associate Director of Odunde I was born in the depths of a creative family; I grew up eating, sleeping, and breathing art. I picked up drumming and singing from my father and dancing and business from my mother. I have been dancing professionally since the age of three. I have been traveling all over the Pacific Northwest, displaying West African culture and dance. After many years of African dance exposure, I then branched off into other dance styles at the age of 6, where I trained in jazz, tap, and hip hop. My focused dance styles are West African and hip-hop dance. I have had the opportunity to be a part of many companies such ADEFUA (29 years), KUTT' N' Up ENT (15 years), Kouyate Arts (6 years), Nu Black Arts West, Broadwaybound, KODE RED dance team (EWU, 5 years) and LADII ENTOURAJ. I have also created my own dance company by the name of MYND KUNTROL (8 years). I have a unique style of choreography. I have been given many opportunities to teach in various places such as Seattle Center (Festival Sundiata and Folklife festival), Cleveland High School Dance team (2016, 2018, & 2019 Bubbling Brown Sugar winners), school demonstrations, professional development seminars, community engagements, etc. I have enjoyed spending many years developing teaching skills: Child and adult education in African drum & dance and Hip hop. Along with dance, I am a phenomenally free-spirited entrepreneur. To start that bridge of life, I attend Eastern Washington University to receive my Bachelor of Arts in Children's Studies, with minors in Africana Studies and Sociology. As of lately, I have been developing my nonprofit organization by the name of Gloria's Heart. Gloria's Heart is devoted to youth programming and development through desired art forms. I have a fantastic gift for working with underserved populations and youth. With my love of music and dance, along with my passion for helping others, I plan to merge them to create beautiful experiences that change lives.
