DearFriendsofTetonValleyRanchCamp,
Smokecurrentlyfillsthevalley.SinceearlyAugust,theRanchhasbeen threatenedbythreeforestfires,allstartedbylightningstrikes.First,theLeeds FirestartedonAugust4thjust9milessouthwestoftheRanch.Thesmoke filledtheair,givinguspauseduringtheGirls'SeasonOlympics.Thankfully,the windshiftedandthedayforgedaheadasplanned.Afterourtraditional programended,andsoonastheLeedsCreekfireabated,themuchlargerFish CreekFirebeganduewestofus,closingTogwoteePassandputtingusonalert yetagain.Whilewewerenotdirectlythreatened,wequicklywenttoour neighbors’aidbyevacuatinghorsesandhousingdisplacedstaffmembersfrom BrooksLakeLodge.Almostassoonastheairbegantoclear,thePackTrialFire startedandcameevencloser,burningwithinjustfourmilesofCamp
Whileeachofthesefiresbroughtthethreatprogressivelycloser,theburnscarleftfromtheLavaMountainFirethat surroundedtheheartoftheRanchin2016heldstrongandpreventedrapidandsignificantgrowthtowardsour mountainhome.Theburnscar,alackoffuel,andthefirefightersdiligentworkstoppedthePackTrailFireandkept OurRanchsafe.It’shardtoignorethemetaphor“Whatdoesn'tkillyoumakesyoustronger.”Difficultandchallenging experiencescreatemoreresilient,prepared,andstrongerheroes.Thisremainsthecoreofwhatwehopeyoungpeople willexperienceatTVRC
WesumitupinoneofourCoreValuesbybeing“ReadytoRide,”whichweinstillbydevelopinggrit,gratitude,and generositythroughchallengingwesternadventure.Regardlessofthechallengeofwildfires,longhikes,andpoor weather;attheend,westandtaller,stronger,moreresilientthanever,andoverwhelmedbythefeelingof accomplishmentandgratitudeforhowfarwehavecome.Wearealsobetterpreparedforthenextchallengewewill face,attheRanchorinourlivesontheothersideoftheTVRCgate.Weseethisresilienceintheeyesofourcampers andstaff,everysummer.WefeelitregularlyinourrolesasDirectorsandparentsandarehopefulyoufeelandseeitin yourchildrenandtheirdailylives.
TVRCisaspecialplacetomanypeople,andit'sthosepeoplethatmakeitso.Youandtherestofouramazing communitybreathelifeintoourdustycabins,andforthatwewholeheartedlythankyou Thankyouforsendingyour campersandtellingothersaboutyourtimeorapositivelifechangingexperienceatTVRC.Thankyouforhelpingus makecampbettereachyearsowecancontinuetoprovidethelife-changingTVRCexperienceforfuturecampers.

Aboutthistimelastyear,Irememberscouringoverthedepthchartof2023 summerstaffmemberswhoplannedtoreturnin2024,dauntedbythenumber ofholesweneededtofill Oneoftheinconveniencesofstaffingaremote residentialsummercampcomesfromhowmuchtimeonecommitstowork withuseachseason.Weoftenobservethateventhebestseasonalstaffwillonly stickaroundfortwoorthreeyears.Ourfirstseasonafterthepandemic influencedOutridersummerof2020sawamassiveamountofturnover amongstthestaffin2021 Sureenough,afterthreewonderfulsummerswith thestaffcorewebuiltin2021,wefoundourselvesneedingtorebuildalarge portionofourteamoncemore.
Summer 2024 Reflection
Andyet,asitoftenseemstohappenatTetonValleyRanchCamp,ateam painstakinglybuiltonspreadsheets,videocalls,andtrustcametogetherto delivermeaningfulfun,growth,andbelongingtoourentirecommunity Over our77daystogether,wesawinsecuritiesbecomeconfidences,incompetencies becomestrengths,andfragilitybecomeresilience.Ioftenfindthattheprocess ofassemblingaseasonalstaffremarkablyresemblesaperson’sfirstRough Ride:along,uncertainwalk(notrun)towardsanunpredictablechallenge, followedbymagic,endinginjoyandconnectedness.Conventionalwisdom rarelysuggeststhatoneshouldwagertheirsuccessonateamofunproven youngpeople,andyet,TVRChasthrivedbyplacingtrustinourstaffforthe past86summers.TheStrengthtoLeadandtheFaithtoFollowcreate marvelousmoments,days,andsummers.
Whatdidsuccesslooklikeforthe86theditionofourexperiment?Campers andstaffalikevolunteeringtowashdishesandcleanthedininghall,showing appreciationforadeliciousmealservedbyourhardworkingkitchencrew Dozensofskits,featuringsongsanddances,preparedbyourtripleadersto createjustalittlemoreexcitementforanupcomingadventure.Infirmarystaff membersattendingfencemeetingstopassoutsunscreenandspendmoretime withcampers.Programstaffandcounselorsteaminguptocreateawackyfun activitythatjustmightmakesomeone’sday Kitchenstaffmembersspending theirpreciousbreaktimeplayingvolleyballonthegreenwithgroupsofunmet campers.Oursummerwasfilledwithsensesofcommunity,commitmentand care.Thewarm,sunny,andhealthycampconditionsweexperiencedforthe vastmajorityoftheseasonseeminglyreflectedthenatureofourefforts.
Theendofoursummersawussayingsolongtoanoutstandingclassof48 Trailblazerswhotoowerepartofthecorewebuiltinourpost-COVID2021 season.AsIwritethispieceatmydesk,Ionceagainfindmyselfdauntedbythe physicalandspiritualholestheirdepartureshaveleftinourcommunity.Ibet, however,thatineightmonth’stimewewillhaveassembledacamperroster filledwithkidseagerfortheadventureofalifetime.Perhapsthosekidswillend beingcounseledbythose48Trailblazers Whatawonderfulthought

Backcountry Trips
ApillaroftheTVRCExperience
TheMissionofTetonValleyRanchCampistoprovideinspiring westernadventureintheJacksonHoleandYellowstonearea. The foundingofTVRCin1939pre-datestheformalmissionstatement, howeverthesentimenthasheldtruesincethatfirstsummerseason. TheuniquebackcountryprogramatTVRCsetsusapartfromthe traditionalresidentialsummercampexperience Overtheyears, aspectsofourprogramhavechanged,mostnotablyourmovefrom theranchinKellytoourcurrent2,600acrelocationinDubois, howeverbackcountrytripshaveremainedanessentialtotheTVRC experience.
Many of our backpacking and pack trips today traverse the same wilderness trails that TVRC campers have explored for nearly a century connecting campers and stories across generations Trips such as the Crystal Creek or Jack Davis Pack Trip or the Static Peak and Moose Basin ventures remain trademarks of the TVRC trips program. New trips present themselves each season, as well, taking full advantage of the remarkable Teton Valley we call home. This year, due to the closureofTetonPass,agroupofTrailblazershadtheopportunitytohikeforfivedaysthroughtheGrosVentresbacktothe Ranch in Dubois finishing their trip by revitalizing an old TVRC tradition of hiking into the Dining Hall on their last morning!
Teton Valley Ranch Camp is one of two youth serving concessioners permitted to travel through the two local National Parks, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone, and is permitted access to Bridger-Teton, Shoshone, and Caribou-Targhee National Forests. Trips are a natural learning environment to foster essential skills such as teamwork, resilience, confidence, and grit. OurcampershavetheopportunitytorealizethatiftheycansummitamountainorspendfourdaysintheBackcountry,that they are capable of handling any other challenges that life may present These are skills that transition not only to life back on the Ranch but to the daily demands of teenage life, as well The gear might look different, and the protocols may be updated, but the laughter and tales from the trail remain as enthusiastic and energetic as ever, carrying on the spirit of backcountrytripsatTetonValleyRanchCamp.

Allwerechatteringandsinging. Theywereapproachedbytwoadulthikers ayoung,strappingtwohundred pounderwithapackonhisback,andasthegirlsexpressedthemselves,"Arealoldman.Hemusthavebeen40yearsold".
This"OldMan"steppedbackfromthetrailandsaid"No!,Idon'tbelieveit.Itcan'tbe!I'mseeingthings!Itmustbethe altitude!" Whereuponthesmallestofthehikerssaid,"Hello,we'refromTetonValleyRanchandwehavebeenhikingfor threedaysandarehavinglotsoffunandfoundlotsofthingsandmyhomeisinConnecticutandhersisCaliforniaandshe's fromIllinois,where’syourpack”? Afterclearinghisthroattwice,this“elderly”personrespondedwith,“Well,yousee,my friendcarriesthepackforbothofus.Wewereoutovernighttoo.”

"Oh",respondedthe82pounder. “Wouldyouliketoseemyrocks”?Sheflippedoffherpackandproducedonespecimen afteranotheroffossils,crystals,petrifiedwood,andbeautifullycoloredrocksthatshewasgoingtocutandpolishassoonas shegotbackintheLapidaryShop.
"Thisisunbelievable",saidtheastonishedman. Hesatdownandwatchedinsilenceasthisgroupofgirlswentupoverthe ridgeandoutofsight. Whenhereturnedtocivilization,thehiker,whoturnedouttobeaprofessorofgeologyinoneofour leadinguniversities,calledonthephone. Inadditiontothissuccessfulseason,wearethrilledtosharethat2024hasbeen oneofourstrongestgivingyearsinrecentmemory.Asmanyknow,thecostof tuitiondoesnotfullyfundthecampexperience. Thus,werelyonannual supporttoclosethegapbetweenoperatingcostsandtuition Thesupportfrom ourcommunityhasbeennothingshortofinspiringandhasallowedustokeep tuitionincreasesmanageableforfamilieswhilemaintainingtheintegrityofour programs.Yourgenerosityhasallowedustoremaininastrongpositionand ensurethateverycamperexperiencesthemagicofTVRCwithoutcompromise. Thankstoyou,wecontinuetodeliverthehigh-qualityprograms,staff,and facilitiesthatmakeTVRCaleaderamongitspeers.
