SUSTAINABLE RETROFIT Enhance history. Be bold with the future.

vPPR embraces historic buildings from all periods, finding inspiration in existing details and the traces of previous uses. A retrofit approach to existing buildings is highly sustainable as well as being conceptually powerful. We always look for clear, bold ways to engage with existing buildings, that enhance what is there without pretending to be part of the past. We often work with artists to help provide a rich, contemporary approach to each project. Project types include listed buildings, post-industrial landscapes, offices, communal living spaces and art exhibitions as well as education institutions.

Vaulted House, Hammersmith, London

The existing building is almost entirely retained and modified. New decorative grills at the front disguise the air handling, while contributing to the street scene.

and within the conservation area. Careful consideration was given to the sustainability strategy, including high levels of insulation and air-tightness; solar control glass; external shading; planting and mesh elements integrated into building fabric; air-source heat pumps and PV cells to roof.

CAMDEN HIGHLINE Planning approval has been granted for the first section of the Camden Highline, running from Camden Gardens to Royal College Street. It will see the transformation of a section of disused railway into a new elevated urban park for London. The project is now set to offer much-needed green space to underserved communities, while creating a new global attraction for London, akin to New York’s High Line.

‘Camden Highline has the potential to become a really important new asset for the local community in Camden and people across the capital. This is exactly the sort of innovative, environmentally sustainable and locally-driven project which could make an important contribution to London’s recovery from the pandemic.’ Sadiq Kahn, Mayor of London

ART EXHIBITIONS

vPPR works with the biggest art institutions in the UK to design their blockbuster exhibitions, including this year’s British Pavilion with John Akomfrah at the Venice Biennale. The team is very experienced at working closely with artists and curators to help them visualise their show. It has experience in installing into buildings of all eras, from the Grade II* listed Royal Academy to the Grade II listed Brutalist Barbican Gallery and is used to designing for a high volume of visitor numbers and flows.

From our studios in London and Hamburg we design for cultural, residential, office, public realm and education clients. vPPR was set up in 2009 by Tatiana von Preussen, Catherine Pease and Jessica Reynolds.
