Legacy
an iconic region of history, conservation, wildlife, and natural wonders
Established in 1929, Grand Teton National Park originally encompassed about 96,000 acres, primarily protecting the Teton Range. In the 1920s, John D. Rockefeller Jr. began purchasing land in the Jackson Hole valley to preserve it from development. Over time, he donated approximately 221,000 acres to the federal government. Much of this land was initially designated as Jackson Hole National Monument in 1943, and in 1950 it was incorporated into an expanded Grand Teton National Park.
Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872, is widely recognized as the world’s first national park—created 18 years before Wyoming achieved statehood. The park contains roughly half of the world’s hydrothermal features, including the largest and most diverse collection on Earth.
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem supports a remarkable diversity of wildlife. Visitors may encounter elk, moose, bison, pronghorn, mountain lions, grizzly and black bears, and gray wolves. The region is also home to notable bird species including bald eagles, trumpeter swans, great blue herons, and ospreys, as well as native fish like the Snake River cutthroat trout.
Teton Village History
Teton Village, originally called Teton, was one of the last areas in Jackson Hole to be homesteaded.
In the early 1900s, it was known as Crystal Springs Ranch, later purchased in 1947 by Ken and Shirley Clatterbaugh, who operated it as a summer camp for girls. The property included a main house, guest cabins, a recreation hall, and a barn at the base of Rendezvous Mountain.
That same year, Paul McCollister moved to Jackson Hole, purchased a large ranch, and became president of the Jackson Hole Ski Club. By 1959, he began scouting locations for a new ski area, ultimately identifying Rendezvous Mountain from the air. In 1961, he and his partner, Alex Morley, began acquiring Crystal Springs Ranch, and by 1963 had formed the Jackson Hole Ski Corporation.
Construction began in 1964, with Après Vous Mountain opening to skiers in 1965. That winter marked the debut of the Alpenhof Lodge and several early base-area buildings, followed by the opening of the Aerial Tram in 1966.

Grand Teton National Park: Moose-Wilson Road and Hiking Access
Grand Teton National Park will continue improvements along Moose-Wilson Road and Death Canyon Road this summer. Death Canyon Trailhead will be closed all year.
