Partschins, Rabland, Töll, Quadrat, Sonnenberg, Vertigen, Tabland

The holiday village of Partschins is located just a few kilometers from Meran, at the gateway to the Vinschgau Valley. Covering an area of 55 km², the municipal territory stretches from the valley floor in Töll up to the Roteck peak at 3,337 meters in the Texel Group Nature Park, making it one of the most altitude-diverse regions in the Meran area.
Nestled between two mountain slopes – the "Sonnenberg" with the Texelbahn cable car and the "Nörderberg" with the Aschbach cable car – the area reveals an extraordinary variety of landscapes. A large part of the territory lies within the Texel Group Nature Park, featuring highalpine lakes, rustic mountain huts, and an impressive diversity of flora and fauna. This is home to the Spronser Lakes, a spectacular high-alpine lake district, as well as the Waterfall, with its 97-meter drop, is among the most impressive waterfalls in the Alps.
Thirteen peaks over 3,000 meters, rare animal species, and an almost 50-meter-high giant sequoia in the village center make the region truly unique. Thanks to its sunny location, Partschins enjoys a mild climate with around 300 days of sunshine per year – ideal for hiking from spring through autumn.

Even in prehistoric times, the area was a popular place for settlement. Archaeological finds on the “Golderskofel”, in the Zieltal Valley, and near the Spronser Lakes bear witness to this early presence. Particularly impressive are the numerous cup-marked stones found throughout the municipal area.
There is also evidence from the Iron Age, such as a bronze winged axe discovered in Rabland in 1914. In Partschins itself, a Rhaetian house confirms early settlement.
During Roman times, the region gained further importance. The Via Claudia Augusta passed through the area, turning it into an important trading center. Milestones, gravestones, and votive inscriptions still testify to this period today.
Partschins is situated on an alluvial cone at the beginning of the Vinschgau Sonnenberg. The historic center, with its traditional farmhouses, narrow lanes, and manor houses, shapes the character of the village.
Particularly worth seeing are the late Gothic parish church of St. Peter and Paul, Stachlburg (an organic castle winery), Spauregg Manor, the Gaudententurm with its distillery, and the Peter Mitterhofer Typewriter Museum.
Peter Mitterhofer – inventor of the typewriter – remained closely connected to Partschins throughout his life. It was here that he developed his ideas, and where his work is still honored and celebrated today.
Rabland is located on the valley floor and looks back on a long history. As a settlement along the Via Claudia Augusta, the village gained economic importance at an early stage.
Characteristic features include its historic inns (such as today’s Restaurant Hanswirt), the St. Jakob Church, and the modern Christ Church.
A highlight for visitors of all ages is the train world museum, with its impressive miniature railway landscape.
Töll is situated at around 500 meters above sea level and is today a popular starting point for hikes.
Its historical significance stems from the customs station that existed here until the 19th century. Particularly worth seeing are the old St. Helena Church, Bad Egart – royal and imperial museum – as well as the historic Töll Hydroelectric Power Plant with its striking sluice tower above the “Etsch” River.
The name Töll probably derives from the Latin word “Teloneum”, meaning customs duty.
As early as Roman times, an important customs station was located here. Thanks to its strategic position at the entrance to the valley, Töll became an important checkpoint and trading hub at an early stage.

From Partschins you reach the famous 110 km circuit "Meraner Höhenweg" using the Texelbahn cable car.
Considered one of the most spectacular in the Alps, the Partschins waterfall cascades down the rock face from a height of 97 m.
Partschins is the hometown of the inventor of the typewriter.
A typewriter museum namend after the inventor Peter Mitterhofer, a train world museum and the Royal & Imperial museum Bad Egart are located in Partschins and its districts.
Each area is served by its own cable car! To the north, the Texelbahn cable car leads up the Sonnenberg mountain, while on the south side the Aschbach cable car reaches up into the Nörderberg mountain.
Ten exciting routes to recommend and two challenging single trails on the Nörderberg mountain are waiting for you!
The visual concept for the wall design along the bike path in Töll/ Partschins is a homage to the inventor of the typewriter Peter Mitterhofer.

In the holiday region of Partschins, sustainability is deeply rooted in our hearts. Our natural surroundings are our most valuable treasure –and that is exactly why we are committed to protecting them together.
Our path to certification
What lies behind our sustainability standards
Since 2024, the Municipality of Partschins has officially been recognised as a sustainable destination. Our region thrives on the close connection between nature, culture, people and living traditions – which is why a responsible use of resources is especially important to us.
We are part of the South Tyrol Sustainability Programme for Tourism and have been awarded the GSTC-Recognized Standard – Level 3 by the independent certification body Vireo Srl. This confirms that we meet both international sustainability criteria and the extended South Tyrolean requirements.
The programme is based on the destination criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and supports destinations in developing tourism in a more climate-friendly, mindful and future-oriented way.
Through short-, medium- and long-term measures in the fields of management, environment, economy and culture, we aim to strengthen our region and preserve its quality of life for future generations.
• Are you traveling with an electric vehicle?
In Partschins, Rabland, and Töll you will find several public charging stations, including at the Texelbahn cable car station, at the municipal depot (Bauhof), at moar 1271 and in Rabland on Gerold Street.
• Take advantage of the well-developed public transport network and, whenever possible, leave your car behind during your holiday.

Discover Unique Art with a Sustainable
With our art project “Nature Is Not Your Toilet”, we use humor to draw attention to a serious issue: please leave no trace in nature. Dispose of tissues and other waste responsibly. And if nature must occasionally serve as a quiet retreat, cover your traces carefully to prevent damage and protect wildlife.
Sustainability means teamwork – guests, hosts, and locals all pulling together. If each of us makes a small contribution, we can achieve great things!
PartschINSER Bamfest
Planting trees together. Shaping the future together.
The PartschINSER Tree Festival is another sustainability initiative of our destination. Together with locals and guests, we plant new trees and set a visible sign for responsibility and a mindful approach to nature.
Trees play an essential role in our ecosystem. By planting trees together, we want to actively contribute to protecting and preserving our landscape.
At the same time, the Tree Festival brings people together. Different generations meet, learn more about forests and experience nature first-hand – strengthening the connection between people and the environment.
This year’s Tree Festival will take place on 22/05/2026. Everyone is warmly invited to take part and help plant the future!

Considered one of the most spectacular in the Alps, the Partschins waterfall cascades down the rock face from a height of almost 100 m. It is particularly impressive in early spring with the melting of snow, when as many as 6,000 liters of water per second flow into the Zielbach torrent. The family hike from Partschins to the waterfall takes about an hour and a half on foot. Otherwise you can reach the waterfall by using the public transport. A scenic family walk leads from the Texelbahn Cable Car mountain station down to the base of the waterfall.
Visitors and locals alike should be able to enjoy the many possibilities that stem from the Alpine landscape, the three different elevations and the special microclimate around the waterfall, and derive specific added benefits for their health. With its natural resources, an imposing waterfall with a curative climate and the variety of possibilities for people seeking activity and recreation, Partschins has set up a pioneering project that not only makes health promotion and prevention of disease possible, but also brings demonstrable benefits for our physical and mental wellbeing.
The “G’sund bleibm! Salute! Take care! project grew out of the collaboration between climatic therapists, medical doctors, hiking guides, nutrition experts and wellness trainers, and has the objective of making the curative benefits of Partschins’ natural surroundings accessible to a wide audience. Visitors and locals alike should be able to enjoy the many possibilities that stem from the Alpine landscape, the three different elevations and the special microclimate around the waterfall, and derive specific added benefits for their health.
Here you can discover more about the project and book our health program:
The Alpine Trail offers fascinating views behind South Tyrol’s largest waterfall and leads to emerald-green pools and small cascades. Breathtaking viewpoints, the constant roar of the water and cosy seating areas invite visitors to pause, relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Those who wish to get even closer to the Partschins Waterfall beforehand can take a short detour (about a 5-minute walk) to the viewing platform.

Origins and Significance
Waal paths are a defining cultural heritage of the Vinschgau Valley and the Burggrafenamt region. In this dry area with low annual rainfall, they formed the basis for agriculture and settlement for centuries. These artificially constructed irrigation channels diverted water from mountain streams to meadows and fields, making life on the Sonnenberg possible.
The term “Waal” originates from Celtic and Romance languages and originally referred to watercourses or channels. Over time, a distinct technical vocabulary developed around the irrigation channels, including terms such as Waaler (the water supervisor), Rod (the scheduled irrigation time), Kandel (wooden flume) and Karnil (small water conduit). Around 1900, South Tyrol was home to approximately 1,000 irrigation channels with a total length exceeding 1,000 kilometres.
Beyond their practical purpose, the irrigation channels created green oases within an otherwise dry landscape. Alders, poplars and chestnut trees lined the paths, providing habitats for a wide variety of plant and animal species. Today, Waal paths are among the most popular walking and hiking trails in the region – quiet, level and close to nature.

The irrigation channel of Partschins is considered the oldest example of the ancient irrigation system of the Vinschgau Valley. As early as the 14th century, the use of water from the Zielbach stream was regulated by written records. In the 15th century, the so-called “Bergwaal” was constructed, which to this day channels water from the Zielbach to Vertigen and onwards to the fields east of Partschins.
The irrigation channel is still overseen by a Waaler, who is responsible for maintenance, water distribution and adherence to irrigation schedules. To monitor the steady flow of water, a irrigation channel bell was used – a simple yet effective control instrument.
The Partschins Waal Path is not only a technical achievement of earlier times but also an impressive testament to the importance of water, regarded as a precious and protected resource.
ROUTE: From the centre of Partschins (bus turning point), follow the road towards the church, then continue along the „Sonnenbergweg“. The route leads through orchards and across the suspension bridge to Winklerhof. From there, follow trail no. 1, gently ascending alongside the Zielbach stream to Salten, where the irrigation channel begins. Continue eastwards along the irrigation channel to its end, then take trail no. 7A downhill via Vertigen back to Partschins.
Variants:
• Variant including the Legends Trail and prehistoric cult and settlement sites (extension of approx. 1 hour)
• Variant by bus no. 265 towards the waterfall to the Salten stop (time saving of approx. 30 minutes)

The path now known as the Rabland Waal Path was formerly referred to as the “Happichl Waal Path”. It also draws its water from the Zielbach stream and was used to irrigate the orchards on the western and southern sides of the village.
With a length of approximately 800 metres, the Waal path winds through a varied landscape of birch, poplar and alder trees, as well as dense undergrowth. Its rich flora and fauna, combined with its idyllic setting, continue to make it a particularly attractive section of the historic irrigation channel network.
ROUTE: From the car park in the „Lahnstraße“, head towards the main road, passing St. Jacob’s Church and Hotel Hanswirt with its well-known Roman milestone. Continue along Geroldstraße to the western access point of the Rabland Waal Path near Happichl. From there, follow the irrigation channel eastwards on a mostly level walk of about 30 minutes to the end of the actual Waal section. Then keep left and ascend the path towards Winklerhof. Above the sports ground of Partschins, turn right and follow Zielstraße, which leads comfortably down into the centre of Rabland.

The first large power plant in South Tyrol
The hydroelectric plant in Töll (later nown as AEC-EW and AE-EW) was the first large power plant in South Tyrol, built on the initiative of the Mayor of Meran and Bozen and designed by the Munich engineer Oscar von Miller in 1897; it was connected to the power grid on April 5, 1898. On the site was formerly located the sawmill belonging to the father of the most famous citizen of Partschins, Peter Mitterhofer, inventor of the typewriter. The waters from the Etsch river pass through a 16 m long weir at the level of Töll, making it a unique contemporary historical monument. The water enters the surge tank, which is situated at an elevation of 496 m above sea level just above the power station, via a 480 meter long free-flow tunnel with a total volume of 6000 cubic meters. The waters of the Etsch river are dammed here, and the lock house located on three masonry columns covered with porphyry stone, built in 1925 for the operation of the lock. It was renovated in 2003, maintaining its original style, as was the former Zieglbrugg (so named because it was once covered by a roof).
There was already an arched bridge built at this site during Roman times, as attested by documents housed in the Johanneum in Innsbruck dating from the 14th and 16th century.
The Peter Mitterhofer cultural trail towards Rabland starts next to the power station, as does the Marlinger Waalweg trail (irrigation channel) as well as the nearby Algunder Waalweg trail (irrigation channel).

The

Seen lakesthe largest high-alpine lake district in the Alps
Approximately 15 kilometers north of Partschins, the ten Spronser Seen lakes nestle at varying altitudes between 2.120m and 2.590m a.s.l. on a high mountain plateau in the heart of the Texel Group Nature Park. The largest two lakes, the Langsee and the Grünsee lakes, together with the other eight lakes, form part of what is the most extensive high altitude lake system in Europe.
On a hike to the Spronser Seen lakes, the route leads straight through an ancient sacred mountain site on the Pfitscher Schartl wind gap. In 1933, the artist Josef Tscholl discovered an ancient place of worship at 2,130 metres above sea level that is unique in South Tyrol. Its discovery was the start of the cup stone research still being undertaken in South Tyrol today. Numerous cup stones from the Bronze age are strung together right by the edge of the path on the Pfitscher Schartl. There are no fewer than 1.300 cup shapes spread over 40 stone slabs. Almost all of the cup stones can be found within the remains of walls in the shape of a pentagon. In addition to the general round depressions, a variety of different figures were also ground out of the stones by hand. The cup shapes on the “star slab”, for example, are believed to have an astronomical meaning. Different symbols are thought to represent the sun, moon and stars. As well as the cup stones, rock paintings also bear witness to the importance of this pass road during Ötzi’s time.
The exact meaning of the mysterious cup stones is still being debated today. They may have been used for ritual acts or as sacrificial sites. Others, on the other hand, believe that they depict signs of the zodiac, calendars or a kind of original script for marking pathways.
Tip: Anyone not wishing to climb so high can also admire cup stones on the Merano High Path "Meraner Höhenweg" n° 24 at the Hochganghaus or on the Partschinser Sagenweg (Trail of Legends).

The old manors and castles, narrow alleyways and traditional farmsteads in the small village center have a timeless fascination. Along the old Roman road, the Via Claudia Augusta, the churches and the old milestone still bear witness to the centuries-long and eventful history of Partschins.
This castle dates from before 1300 and was once the home of the Lords of Partschins. It is now the Castle Vineyard of Baron Sigmund von Kripp and his family. It is possible to visit the wine cellar and inner courtyard during weekly wine tasting events held every Thursday.
The interios cannot be visited.
The mansion was originally built in 1348 by Meinhard, Edler von Gaudenz (an aristocrat from Gaudenz). Since that time it underwent several renovations, especially during the Baroque period. The Erker oval windows, sundial and coat of arms symbolizing the alliance, date back to the 17th century. In 1794 the house was bought by Anton Isser, a chronicler from Meran, who four years later changed his surname to ‘von Gaudententurm’ when entering the nobility. It was via his grandson, the Viennese physician and neurologist, Dr. Friedrich Leopold von Sölder zu Prakenstein (1867-1943) that the residence passed on to the present-day owners.
The inner courtyard and cellars are open to the public during the weekly Schnaps tasting events.
The private interior rooms are not open for public viewing.
This stately home dates back to the XII century and is owned by the descendants of Knight Franz Ferdinand von und zu Goldegg The splendid gardens are the home of many Mediterranean trees as well as an old yewtree, a cypress and an incredible 140 years old, 45 mt. tall Mammoth Tree.
The castle itself is not open to visitors.
At Hochhueben Hof farm in Partschins, a feudal holding of the Salzburg Bishops dating to the 14th century, a Roman gravestone has been built into the front wall of the house on the right side next to the entrance. An officer of the customs station in Töll did this to immortalize his firstborn son, who died only 21 years and 11 months old.
The letters D.M. on the seal (Dis manibus – the gods of death) and the manner of execution of the lettering appear to date to the first half of the 2nd century AD.
Roman tombs and coins have also been found across the courtyard.

The discovery of an ancient Roman Milestone proves that the old Roman road, the Via Claudia Augusta, which led up and over the Alps, ran through Töll and Rabland. This particular milestone is now housed in the Bolzano Civic Museum while a copy can be seen at the Hanswirt hotel, the old coaching inn at Rabland.
This church was first mentioned in a document in 1264 and rebuilt in late Gothic style in 1502. It is worth mentioning some marble sculptures and mural paintings as well as a wooden sculpture by the famous artist Jörg Lederer from Kaufbeuren.
St. Jacob's Chapel was built in late Gothic style in 1513. On the outer wall, you can see two sundials from the 16th century. The chapel interior houses a pointed arch portal decorated with a little turret as well as two altarpieces.

The Christkönigskirche church, also known as the new parish church, was built between 1961 and 1963. The church has a flat-ceiling nave with a separate altar area. The two stained glass windows are by Heiner Gschwendt from Klausen, the church organ, consecrated in 1987, is by Andrea Zeni, and all other works of art connected with the church, including the granite fountain in front of the church and the statue of the Archangel Michael made of Lasa marble housed in a niche on the church square, are by the artist Friedrich Gurschler.
Friedrich Gurschler was born in February 1923 on a farm near Unsere Frau in Schnalstal Valley and is an honorary citizen of Partschins.
Gothic building which was first mentioned in a document in 1326. The interior of the chapel offers a statue of St. Helen, two neo-Gothic altars (consecrated to St. Nepomuk and St. Valentine) as well as a crucifix from the 17th century.
The collection includes three agricultural machines, all dating from 1903. They are 5mt. in height and are proof that the Vinschgau valley was once regarded as the bread-basket of South Tyrol. You’ll find the open air museum of Technical Machinery along the the Etsch cycle path in Rabland.
What to see in Partschins, Rabland and Töll

Peter Mitterhofer, born in 20.09.1822 and † 27.08.1893, in Partschins is known as the inventor of the typewriter, carpenter, and gifted tinkerer and inventor. The house of Peter Mitterhofer is first mentioned as the "Zimmerhaus im Obergarten" in a document dating to 1431. Peter Mitterhofer (1822-1893) lived in this house in Partschins for 31 years and developed five typewriter models in his workshop there; the first of these prototypes was also the earliest of its kind, in 1864. It is known that Peter Mitterhofer designed five different typewriter models during the period between 1864 and 1869. The first model (1864, The Unsuccessful) is housed today at the Technical Museum of Industry and Commerce in Wien. The second model was discovered accidentally in 1911 hidden in a secret compartment in the attic of Peter Mitterhofer’s house in Partschins. The third model remains missing to this day – although Peter Mitterhofer travelled with it from Partschins to Vienna on foot in 1866. The fourth model (the Meran model) was created in 1866. This model is on display at the Palais Mamming City Museum in Meran. Peter Mitterhofer completed his fifth typewriter prototype in 1869 (the Wien model). It was his intention to build a perfectly functioning typewriter.

Mals is famous for his romance churches and steeples. In earlier times, the 5,000-strong community once had seven steeples and five of them are still in existence.
With its 900 inhabitants, the historic town of Glurns in the south of Mals is one of the smallest cities in the world. First mentioned in 1304 as Glurns has hardly changed over the centuries. This gem of the Upper Vinschgau Valley has a medieval centre and boasts the only intact enclosed fortification, complete with fully preserved ramparts and picturesque gate towers.
High above Göflan and the idyllic village of Laas, at the foot of the Ortler massive, there is a quarry where the purest marble in Europe has been mined for centuries. This marble is not only pure in character, but extremely hard, durable, and weather-resistant. A series of guided tours and marble-themed hikes leading to the White water marble quarry, the Göflan quarry or the incline quarry railway used to transport the heavy marble slabs down to the valley offer visitors an interesting insight into the history of the local marble industry. The interior of the centuries-old marble quarry itself cannot be visited for safety reasons.
Reschensee – The Tower in the Lake
The landmark of the Vinschgau Valley is both fairy-tale-like and fascinating: Rising solitary from Lake Reschen is a submerged church tower. Yet the story behind the “Tower in the Lake” is far less idyllic. The Romanesque church dating back to the 14th century stands as a silent witness to the irresponsible damming of the lake shortly after the end of the Second World War.

Customs and traditions in Partschins are closely bound up with the Christian faith and the Catholic Church in particular, with solemn religious processions taking place throughout the year. In the run-up to Easter, palm branches are braided and on Easter Sunday children receive a platted cake shaped in the form of a chicken or rabbit from their godparents, known as a Fochaz.
On the third Sunday after Pentecost the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated throughout South Tyrol. Visible from a distance, fires are ignited on the hills commemorating the local resistance against the historic invasion by the French army. In the third week of September the annual transhumance of sheeps from the Zieltal Valley is a traditional event of note.
An old tradition which is celebrated on 6th. January – the “Dreikönigsweihe” - when the Three Wise Men come to bless your home. The whole family walks through the rooms of the house, praying and sprinkling holy water on their way, and incense, the dried resin from the so-called Incense Tree, is lit in the hope of keeping harmful spirits and danger away from the family and their home. Farmers’ fields and meadows are also blessed and the sign of the “Kini”, the Three Wise Men who are locally referred to as the “Three Kings”, is chalked on the door lintel together with the year and the letters CMB standing for Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, as in 20 CMB 26, for example. At the end of the ceremony, everyone present recites the Rosary or “Rosenkranz” prayer together.
This very popular religious ceremony is particularly important in South Tyrol and is connected to a strong patriotic feeling for the Fatherland. It is celebrated on the second Sunday after the feast of Corpus Christi. Bonfires are lit in the shape of the Cross or a heart on the surrounding mountain sides and outline the peaks after dark and a very special atmosphere can be felt everywhere. This tradition dates back to the XIX century, to the year 1796, when the leaders of Tyrol met in Bolzano to discuss how to push Napoleon’s invading troops out of the country. Sebastian Stöckl, abbot of Stams monastery in present-day Austria, suggested appealing to the Sacred Heart of Jesus to save South Tyrol from the hands of the French. Fires are lit every year on this day in remembrance of the event.

The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary is celebrated on August 15 and is the oldest Marian feast of the Catholic Church. On this day, herb bouquets are blessed, as legend says that when Mary’s tomb was opened, flowers were found instead of her body.
The tradition of blessing wild herbs on this feast day dates back to the earliest times of humankind. Knowledge of the healing power of plants was already used by our ancestors for prevention and recovery.
A large “Kräuterbuschn” (herb bouquet) traditionally consists of 72 different plants, while a small one must contain at least seven. These beautiful bouquets of wild and garden herbs, fresh flowers, and field plants are believed, once blessed, to bring luck, protection, and good health – and to ward off misfortune.
The Transhumance of the returning sheep herds in Partschins
Autumn in Partschins is not only renowned for the various events relating to the Törggelen (tasting the young wine along with roast chestnuts and seasonal dishes), but also for the transhumance of the returning sheep herds, from the Zieltal Valley to their shelters. In september, some 1,300 head of sheep will be expected to descend on the Schutzhütte Nasereit / rifugio Nasereit. Some of the sheep, which have been marked in color, will later be separated for shearing, known here as "Schofschur".
The return of the herds from summer pastures from the Zieltal Valley is appropriately celebrated at the Nasereit Alpine shelter, in accordance with the old farming tradition.

The processions of St. Nicholas are held annually on 5th December, St. Nicholas’s Day and are a longstanding tradition in South Tyrol. Escorted by his entourage of ‘angels’, the procession of the holy bishop is preceded by an uproar that already started in the preceding days. This is when, on the 5th December, the so-called Krampus, or devils (Tuifl in the local German dialect), wreak havoc in the inhabited centers. Dressed in animal skins, their faces covered with scary masks, they run amok in the streets, rattling their chains and ringing heavy iron bells.
Back in the old days, these ‘devils’ used to frighten people and scare the ‘naughty’ children. Nowadays, there is nothing more to be afraid of, since the processions are choreographed to perfection and every year provide great entertainment for spectators of all ages. At the end of the procession, St. Nicholas hands out surprise gifts to the ‘good’ kids.
The Krampus and Tuifltog recall the ancient pagan rituals and traditional Celtic customs. In the age when man still lived out in the open, there were the old beliefs in numerous spirits in nature, including that of the harsh winter, which had to be expelled forcefully. The evil winter spirits were exorcised scary monsters to the noisy accompaniment and the clanging of bells. At the same time, the beating of the rods was meant to promote fertility.
Every valley and each inhabited locality in South Tyrol has its own special way of celebrating this raucous, ancient tradition. During the procession in Partschins, the Höllentol Tuifl (the devils of the valley of hell), provide an escort to St. Nicholas.

The "Tracht" is the traditional attire of South Tyrol. The region boasts a diversity of traditional costumes that is unique in the Alpine area. Every valley – and almost every village – has its own distinctive costume, differing in color, cut, and decorative details.
The Tracht is considered the most dignified garment for festivities and special occasions in South Tyrol. Wearing it is closely connected to the concept of Heimat (homeland) and represents awareness of a centuries-old folk culture. This tradition is carefully and respectfully preserved by all generations.
In the Burggrafenamt – and therefore also in Partschins –the Burggräfler costume is worn. In general, there are two main forms: Women wear either the Bäurisches Gewand or the Burggräfler Miedertracht Men wear the “Langbäurisches” or the “Kurzbäurisches” costume
Women’s Costumes:
The Burggräfler Tüchltracht, often simply called the Bäurisches (in dialect “Bayrisches”), can be recognized by its colorful Übertüchl (over-scarf) and a black wool skirt (Kietl) with an apron matching the color of the scarf. The female attendants of the Partschins brass band traditionally wear the “Bayrisches.”
The Burggräfler Miedertracht, commonly known as the “Meraner Dirndl,” consists of a black skirt, a blue-printed apron (Schurz), a white blouse, and a red lace-up bodice. This costume is the traditional attire of the women of the Partschins brass band.
Men’s Costumes:
The men’s traditional costume, the Langbäurisches, includes a white shirt (Pfoat), a black velvet vest (Leibl), and long black loden trousers with green suspenders. The most distinctive feature is the black felt hat adorned with a red geranium (Brennetliab).
During certain religious festivities and feast days, religious processions are held in Partschins and Rabland. The entire village, along with its relative unions and clubs, such as the local band, the "Schützen" and volunteer fire brigade, choirs, and local inhabitants all participate at the event. Thus, processions are a popular and colorful public spectacle, as well as a firmly rooted religious ritual! The traditional and colorful rogations lead through the village and stop at several stations, where the partakers pray and sing. The priest walks along under a baldachin while the partakers carry relevant flags, statues, and other Christian symbols.
The important and most spectacular processions in our community are:
• the Josefi procession - 22.03.2026
• the Corpus Christi procession - 06.04.2026
• the Sacred Heart procession - 14.06.2026
• the Thanksgiving procession - 18.10.2026

The Partschins Music Band was first documented in 1818 during a Corpus Christi procession, when it appeared as a small brass ensemble. Franz Ferdinand, Knight von und zu Goldegg and Lindenburg, residing at “Spauregg Castle” in Partschins, founded the band as a generous patron. It is therefore one of the oldest brass bands in the Burgraviato region. In 2018, the Partschins Music Band celebrated its 200th anniversary.
Since 2018, the band has been presenting itself in a new traditional outfit, the so-called “Kurzbäurisch”. This attire is worn during processions and festive occasions. The music band occupies an important place in the cultural life of the municipality of Partschins. Its cheerful music accompanies many religious celebrations and events throughout the year. From April to October, numerous Sunday concerts, evening concerts, and open-air performances take place.
The band places great importance on traditional outings, such as visiting households across the entire municipality with New Year’s greetings. During the winter months, a new concert programme is rehearsed each year for the Spring Concert on Palm Sunday, requiring continuous and dedicated practice. The band currently has 60 active members, with an average age of under 30.
In 2026 as well, the diverse programme includes around 30 performances by the full band. The Partschina Music Band looks forward to welcoming a large audience at processions, concerts, and festivals.
Alongside the main band, several subgroups also contribute to the musical and cultural life of the village, including the Partschins Böhmische, the Zieltol-Böhmische and “Flo & Co.”
Youth work is another strong focus of the band: at present, more than 30 girls and boys attend the music school. Over 20 young musicians already play in the youth band – the JuPa. Since 2024, there is also the “Pumuckl-Musi”, made up of first-year music students.
The band also helps organise various events in the municipality, such as the “Day of Music” on 1 May, the Gasslfest and the Partschins Advent, often in cooperation with other associations.
News about the Partschins Music Band can be found at www.mkpartschins.com or on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Spotify.

The South Tyrolean cuisine takes the best from the world of Italian classics such as pasta and from hearty dishes such as dumplings. South Tyrolean cuisine has its origins in the traditional cooking in the mountain farms. Traditionally, the dishes that came to the table were made mainly from ingredients produced right there on the farm. Over time, however, the hearty cuisine has combined with a more refined and diverse Italian cuisine. The result is a culinary mix that has made the South Tyrolean cuisine well known far beyond the borders of South Tyrol.
The quality gastronomy in Partschins, Rabland and Töll can best be described as rich and varied, ranging from sophisticated upmarket restaurants to typical local pubs serving hearty South Tyrolean dishes.
The restaurants and other establishments in Partschins go to great lengths to serve only the best quality dishes accompanied by an impeccable level of service, with a bias in favor of local platters and ingredients. The single-most characteristic South Tyrolean trait is that of hospitality, which begins as soon as patrons enter the door.

Enjoy small typical dishes such as South Tyrolean Marende with bacon, cheese, and smoked sausages, as well as farmer‘s toast and much more.

Anyone who knows Hermann knows that he puts his heart and soul into his products. His product range is diverse and includes bacon, belly bacon, and apple juice. He has a special relationship with wine. The over 250-year-old "Versoaln" grape variety thrives here. It is said that the vine was destroyed when the farm was burned by the French in 1809. When the farm was rebuilt in 1810, the vine began to grow again. It is said that the vine was destroyed when the farm was pillaged by the French in 1809. When the farm was rebuilt in 1810, the vine sprouted again. The vine now has a circumference of 106 cm at the base. This grape variety, once widespread, is now found almost exclusively in old vineyards at the edges of wine-growing areas. The Laimburg Research Center for Fruit, Wine, and Horticulture used seedlings of this variety to add it to its collection of old grape varieties. The farm sells its own Vernatsch wine, dark cuvée, rosé, Piont Blanc and Müller Thurgau.

Autumnal delights: chestnuts and wine
No autumn in South Tyrol is complete without the traditional Törggelen, the convivial annual festivity following the harvest. Roast chestnuts and the new wine are the key ingredients throughout the course of these autumn celebrations in South Tyrol. In the traditional inns and taverns the typical Törggelen menu consists of a plate of barley soup, a mixed platter with local sausage and smoked meat, garnished with sauerkraut and dumplings.
For dessert, roast chestnuts and stuffed doughnuts are washed down with the new wine, locally known as Suser. The farmsteads, wineries and taverns celebrating the Törggelen in Partschins mainly utilize homegrown ingredients for the traditional platters and the new wine matured in the local cellars. The term Törggelen originates from Torggl, meaning a winepress in German. At the Stachelburg Castle wine cellars, there are guided tours with tastings once a week and an old refurbished wine press is on show.
In Partschins, traditional inns, wine cellars, and rustic farmhouse taverns invite you to enjoy authentic Törggelen. A visit to historic cellars or family-run farms is particularly atmospheric, where wine, speck, chestnuts, and other products come directly from the farm.

Did you know?
The name “Rötelspitze” refers to the reddish rock colour caused by iron oxide, which makes the summit glow intensely in the evening light. The word “Rötel” (also spelled Röthel) is an old Alpine term for red ochre or iron-rich earth. Many peaks in South Tyrol and Austria share this name root, such as Rötelstein or Rotwand. The mountain also marks a historic boundary between the Partschins area and the Lazinser Valley in the Passeier Valley.
From the Texelbahn mountain station, follow the Merano High Mountain Trail 24 eastwards to Nasereit Hut. Here, trail 8 leads into the Zieltal Valley to the Lodnerhütte hut. From the hut, continue on the exposed Franz Huber Trail 7B, requiring sure footing and a head for heights.

Return along the Merano High Mountain Trail 24, passing the Nasereit hut to the Texelbahn cable car. ! Only suitable for experienced, sure-footed mountaineers in excellent physical condition.
The Franz Huber Trail is named after the Merano mountaineer Franz Huber (1875–1941).
Huber was an important pioneer of alpine exploration in the Texel Group and a long-standing board member of the Merano section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club. He played a key role in developing alpine infrastructure around the Lodnerhütte hut and the Hochganghaus hut. The trail was dedicated to him in recognition of his significant contributions to mountaineering in the region.

From the Texelbahn Cable car mountain station, follow the Merano High Mountain Trail Nr. 24 to Nasereit Hut. Continue on trail 8 into the Zieltal Valley to Ginglegg. Descend via the same route.
! Only suitable for experienced, sure-footed mountaineers in excellent physical condition.
Zielspitze is the iconic home mountain of Partschins and a striking peak visible from Meran. Each year, the number 7 appears clearly in the snow below the summit. In the past, local farmers used to say: “As long as you can see the 7, more snow is coming.”
From the Texelbahn Cable car mountain station, follow the Merano High Mountain Trail Nr. 24 to Nasereit Hut. Then follow trail 8 into the Zieltal Valley to the Lodnerhütte hut. From the hut, the Franz Huber Trail 7B begins. At the junction, trail 1 continues up to the summit of Sattelspitze peak. The descent follows trail 1 down to Tablander Alm hut and then along the Merano High Mountain Trail 24 back to the Texelbahn Cable car.
! This high-alpine trail is suitable only for experienced hikers. It includes exposed traverses, rocky sections and some passages secured with cables or chains. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential.
The name “Sattelspitze” derives from its position above a clearly visible mountain saddle (“Sattel”), a typical alpine term describing the topographical shape of the terrain.

The most memorable mountain moments arise where nature, movement and mindfulness meet. The following tips show how to behave responsibly and safely in the mountains.
Preparation is essential
Find out about the route and elevation gain and check whether the hike matches your physical condition – especially if you suffer from a fear of heights or dizziness. Plan realistically: allow around 20 minutes of walking time per kilometre or per 100 metres of elevation gain.
Also keep an eye on the weather forecast, as conditions in the mountains can change quickly and unexpectedly.
Checklist before you start your hike:
Sturdy hiking boots suitable for the terrain
Weather-appropriate clothing (including rain and cold protection)
Sufficient water and food
Sun protection in summer (cap, sunglasses, sunscreen)
Mobile phone with sufficient battery life
Hiking map or GPS for orientation
First-aid kit for emergencies
Cash – not every mountain hut accepts card payments

Respect nature
Please do not leave any rubbish behind, avoid noise and respect wildlife, grazing animals, plants and protected areas. Take your memories home with you and leave nothing behind in nature.
Stay on marked trails
Follow the trail markers and remain on the designated paths. Shortcuts damage nature and increase the risk of losing your way.
Trail closures are for your own safety and indicate possible hazards. Please follow these notices and check the current trail conditions in advance at the tourist office or with your accommodation.
The call is free of charge.
Even if your phone has no credit or your own network is unavailable, an emergency call can still be made.

A very nice, smaller climbing area. Suitable for beginners, more expert climbers and those who like to climb alone!

Direction: facing south

Height of wall: 15 – 20 mt.
Difficulty: 3a – 7a+ Roped lengths: 1 roped length
Of special note: Climbers can rope themselves to the face and there are abseiling possibilities
How to reach the area: Partschins center – towards Vertigen disctrict –turn left at the "Fasserkreuz" junction and follow the sign posts "Burgstallknott".
An absolute highlight for experienced climbers, a beautifully laid-out climbing area on Sonnenberg mountain in Partschins/Parcines with more than 100 sq. mt. of panorama terraces, grill facilities, benches and tables and fantastic views of the Dolomite peaks and the Meran area.More than 30 climbing routes, from grade II to IX in difficulty, and a number of ropeways – some over 30 mt. long.
How to get to the Climbing Area: Simply take the Texelbahn cable car in Partschins up to the mountain station then walk 7 min. along the “Dursterhof” path to the rock-face turning off after a 5 min. walk to the right in a westerly direction. by car to the „Dursterhof“ farm, then a 30 min. walk to the rock face, following the Giggelberg path then turning uphill after 25 min. towards the west.
The Hoachwool via ferrata offers exciting tours on the rocks for experienced climbers with views of Juval Castle.
The challenging and varied topology crossings, the steep cliffs and the old Kandln (originally laid in 1833 as a water pipe) make this via ferrata unique.
Difficulty: D
Time required: 3, 5 hours

Below the platform "Unterstell" begins the via ferrata "KNOTT" for families. There are four routes, a short connecting route, a 20 m long rope bridge and two steep ladders. The via ferrata offers easy routes, difficult passages, exposed routes and technical sections and can be climbed at any time of day, because the ascent and descent are short.
Difficulty: A-D

To ensure that both two- and four-legged guests arrive relaxed, the most important information is summarized below.
When entering South Tyrol, don't forget to bring a properly completed EU Pet Passport (available from your veterinarian). The passport must include the rabies vaccination required for entry. The rabies vaccination must be at least 21 days old and no more than one year old.
Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times in Italy. Dog owners who do not keep their four-legged friends on a leash or under control will be fined!
Heavy penalties will be imposed if it can be proven that a wild animal has been killed, as the law on animal cruelty will then apply.
A muzzle must also be carried at all times and used when necessary (e.g., on public transportation or cable cars).
Please respect our environment and use the designated dog toilets. Their locations are marked on the town map. It is mandatory to carry plastic bags and immediately clean up after your dog. Dispose of the bags in the appropriate trash cans, not in nature! Do not misuse the dog toilets as residual waste containers. It is especially important to clean up after your dog in the meadows.
