President’s Message TO OUR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS

Dear Alumni & Friends of Tiffin University: I began my presidency the summer of 2016 believing profoundly that diversity and inclusion expands worldliness. Because of this, I am dedicated to leading our students to become globally-minded and cross-culturally sensitive by setting examples of understanding and respect for each other, regardless of cultural or ethnic background. This commitment is referred to as Celebrating CulTUral Uniqueness (CCU).

Given today’s complex and often unstable political and global environment, I can think of no better time for higher education to take a stand about cross-cultural sensitivity, particularly if a college campus brings international students from their home countries to study within the learning environment of its institution. Higher educational environments must be proactive learning spaces where we educate each other in the most diverse ways possible with the highest hope of understanding and respecting each other regardless of differences.

As soon as they step foot on our campus, many of our students (of whom are first-generation) will interact with peers who are different from themselves for the first time. They will soon learn that diversity includes differences that cannot always be seen rather than just the color of our skin.

In the pages ahead, you will see for yourself how our institution has become a perfect laboratory of learning to celebrate who we are individually and as an organizational culture. You will meet Khaled Alrashedi, a student who moved to Tiffin from Saudi Arabia to study homeland security and terrorism, so that he can return to his country and apply for a job with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ekaterina (Ekat) Hauff came to the U.S. from Russia after she had lost both parents within two years because of alcoholism and street drugs. Today, Ekat is serving in the Peace Corps in Mongolia after her graduation from Tiffin. These are just two stories of individuals we are proud to call our alumni.

I am inspired that all of us at TU are learning to look at the world differently – every day, and through each issue of Challenge Magazine, it is our intent to give you a glimpse of how we are becoming an institution of cross-cultural sensitivity through the stories we share about each other. RIGHT PLACE. RIGHT TIME. When Ekaterina (Ekat) Hauff, 23, was born, her mother Natalia was 16-years-old and her father Andrei was 18-years-old. They were both poor high school dropouts in Cheboksary, Russia, a river port city of nearly 500,000, about 400 miles east of Moscow.

By the time she was 12 years old, Ekat’s father passed away from complications of alcoholism. Two years later, she lost her young mother to street drugs. Present when each parent passed, Hauff was heartbroken by her losses.

Soon after being orphaned Ekat and her younger brother Nikita found themselves in a Cheboksary Orphanage, looking at a bleak future. That was until Michael and Heather Hauff of North Olmsted, Ohio, decided to add more children to their family. The Hauffs had three children but knew they had more love and opportunities to share.

One day, Heather saw pictures of children from the orphanage on a website. Ekat’s image stayed with her. After discussing adoption with family, Michael and Heather visited the siblings in Russia.

“Nikita and I agreed to join their family in the United States,” says Ekat. “I knew that despite my broken heart I had to do something to have a bright future and let myself live again. It took one year to process all of the paperwork for us to move to America in 2012.”

The timing was fortuitous as Russia banned adoptions by U.S. parents in 2012 and controversy continues to surround Russian-U.S. adoptions.

“After living in Russia for 16 years and observing all of the hardships in life,” she says. “I am very thankful to my family and can’t imagine where I would be without them. I’m glad that they decided to adopt me and Nikita seven years ago. This situation made me truly believe in God and that miracles do happen in real life.”

Once in Ohio, Ekat quickly learned English and graduated from North Olmsted High School in spring 2015. She started studying at Tiffin University in fall 2015. Just four years later she graduated with two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management.

“When I was looking at the universities, I wanted a university with an international business program that would include study abroad,” she notes. “I heard that Tiffin University had a partnership with the Washington Center. Honestly, Tiffin University is great at letting students have different working opportunities. The only thing that students need is the motivation to do it all.”

And Ekat had that motivation. She graduated with two degrees, studied abroad in Berlin, Germany, and spent a semester in Washington, D.C., completing an internship with a legislative

agency. She also worked as a resident assistant and peer mentor at TU during her sophomore and senior years.

“I am proud to be a TU graduate because Tiffin University is amazing and everyone who works there always wants to support you,” she says. “It’s like being part of a big family and despite your opinions or ideas, the family is always there for you.”

Her coursework and extracurricular activities at TU led to a stint in the Peace Corps. A 50-year-old international service organization, the Peace Corps places volunteers in disadvantaged countries to work at the grassroots level to create change that lasts long after their service. Projects may be in agriculture, environment, health, education and more.

Teacher’s Day Celebration

To fulfill her two-year service commitment teaching English and working in community development, Ekat moved to the independent, democratic country of Mongolia in June, 2019. She chose the country – sandwiched between Russia and China – to be close to her native Russia hoping it may be easier to learn the language.

In Tuv Province, Mongolia, Ekat is both learning and teaching languages. “I love that I am not only assisting my community, but I also learn so much about others as well as myself,” she reflects. “I love that I am able to grow every day and appreciate everything that I have. I love that I can influence students to see the best in people and to always have smiles on their faces.”

While the move and language haven’t been easy, she’s enjoyed her host family.

“Despite cultural and language barriers, we understood each other well. They could see that I truly care about children and my role as a Peace Corps volunteer. And, I could see their curiosity and love for me.

We didn’t have to use words to express our respect for each other and we could laugh at some situations without words.

A ger or yurt is the home of the Mongolian nomads. Its history dates back thousands of years. No running water, toilet or shower. A fire has to be made several times a day.

“After one situation, I knew I was in the right place at the right time. My host family has three boys (ages two, five and nine),” she says. “Those children brighten my every day with their smiles, questions and attitudes towards learning. The kids made me feel like I can truly influence others.

The oldest was so motivated to learn English and wanted to spend so much time with me.

“One day he told me that he wants to learn English and that he will work for the Peace Corps when he grows up. After the conversation with him, all my doubts have RIGHT PLACE. RIGHT TIME. / 7

disappeared, and I stopped thinking and asking myself if it was the right decision to move away from my family.”

In addition to teaching English, Ekat helps run clubs such as the Speaking Club, Life Skills Club and Teachers Club. “I see so many students excited to have me in their classes, and they always ask so many questions,” she says. “But honestly, the best part that makes me happy every day is seeing students smiling and trying to use English to communicate with me. It’s sad to think that most of the students at my school have never seen a foreign person but now they have me.”

Moving to Mongolia meant adapting to the culture. Ekat lives in her own Mongolian ger.

Known in other countries as a “yurt,” a “ger” is a portable, round tent covered with skins or felt and used as a simple dwelling.

“I have to fetch water, make a fire every day and live without showers. But this living experience is nothing compared to the happiness that I feel here,” she says.

“The students at my school make me laugh and smile every day. Honestly, I have never felt so helpful and needed as I felt here in Mongolia on the other side of the world.”

“After living here for six months I can say that my life has been changed forever,” she says. “Now I know that my parents decided to adopt me because their hearts told them to do so. My heart is telling me that I have to be here, that I have to be patient and share my love and positive attitude with others.

“When I was a child, I never had a role model or something to look forward to, but now I can be a role model for children in my school.”

“My parents truly inspired me to live a different life and always help others,” she says? “I wouldn’t be who I am without their guidance and support. I am proud to be their daughter and I am forever thankful to them.

I want to adopt kids myself once I have a stable job and income.”

When her stint with the Peace Corps ends, Ekat is planning to find a job at a non-profit or government agency in the United States.

She also wants to get a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in international psychology.

T h e Wa s h i n g to n Ce n te r Internship ONE STUDENT’S EXPERIENCE

Ekaterina (Ekat) Hauff ’s internship with the Open World Leadership Center in Washington, D.C., helped her to see her future.

The Open World Leadership Center is an arm of the U.S. Congress with a stated mission to “introduce rising leaders of emerging countries to the importance of legislative functions in creating and sustaining democracies. This is done through the introduction of young foreign leaders to the American democratic governing systems and free-market operations at every level: federal, state and local. The Center also maintains a continuing relationship with the network of leaders it has enlisted, especially with those from countries crucial to American national security interests.”

“Before I came to the Open World Leadership Center, I was unsure of many things,” Hauff said. “I was not sure of where I wanted to work in the future. I was uncertain of how the skills I had could help me find a job. I was unsure of what career I could follow with psychology and business degrees.”

The internship semester in D.C. changed all of that. It exposed Ekat to a number of opportunities and helped her see what she may want to do in the future.

“It forced me to make professional connections and stay up to date with current issues,” she said. “I made multiple connections with people working in fields that I aspire to be in one day and learned various skills crucial to making myself a competitive applicant in future career postings.”

“I gained skills by creating briefing materials for the Counselor to the Board, for our organization and for Ambassador John O’Keefe,” she said. “I would often be asked to research a topic in Russian and create briefing material in English. Thanks to the experience I had at TU, it was easy for me to research and find topics, even when some were very obscure.”

“The staff at Open World was accommodating in letting me attend congressional meetings and other events that focused on Russian involvement in Georgia and Ukraine,” she said. “At a lecture by the Chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia, I learned about democratic reforms and foreign policies in Georgia. I also had the opportunity to visit the Ukrainian embassy and talk to Ambassador of Ukraine Valeriy Chaly.”

Fact More than 300 Tiffin University students have obtained internship positions through The Washington Center since 2003. In fact, TU has sent more students to The Washington Center for internships than any other college or university in the U.S.

Student Spotlight TU CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENT SUCCESS

CHOOSING THE RIGHT INTERNSHIP Khaled Saad E Alrashedi Hometown: Qassim, Saudi Arabia Major: Homeland Security and Terrorism Expected year of graduation: May 2020

Khaled Saad E Alrashedi, 24, moved from Qassim, Saudi Arabia to Tiffin, Ohio in 2010 to study homeland security and counterterrorism. He’ll graduate from Tiffin University in December, 2019 with a Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree in homeland security and terrorism.

Alrashedi says he chose the field to make a difference. He wants to do something for his country and the international community. “Terrorism is an international phenomenon and threatens international peace and security,” he said. “We all need to stand together to fight terrorism. If we don’t do anything about terrorism, it’s going to grow, become more dangerous and kill more people around the world.”

His second reason is more personal. “Terrorism is wrongly linked with the Islamic religion and the Middle Eastern region,” he said, expressing a desire to end that perceived connection. “When I see people doing something wrong in the name of our religion it makes me angry. They make our religion and our society appear threatening.”

“I chose to study counterterrorism at Tiffin University because I believe it is one of the best programs in the country, when it comes to security studies,” Alrashedi said. “I have friends who graduated from Tiffin in 2017 and they encouraged me to study here.”

Alrashedi is already on his path. He was one of four students nationwide who was awarded an internship with the Permanent Mission of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations in New York City during the summer of 2019. His fellow student interns were from George Washington University, Georgetown University and Pennsylvania State University.

“Being an intern for the Kingdom’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations was one of the most essential experiences I could

have obtained to learn about the field of counterterrorism,” he said. “During my internship, I was able to link together what I had learned through classroom lectures to practical reality.”

“Training with governmental authority and intergovernmental organizations, such as the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations, was a professional experience that cannot be found elsewhere,” he said. “It was possible because of what I learned at Tiffin.”

Alrashedi worked with the head of the Counter-Terrorism Department. This included the work of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, Counter-Terrorism Committee, the Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate and the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre.

“My primary responsibilities included attending and supporting events hosted by the United Nations or Permanent Missions of the United Nations on topics related to Counter-Terrorism,” he said. “I had the honor of representing the Saudi delegation on behalf of the Director of the Counter-Terrorism Committee in some meetings and side-events. These included an event coorganized by Norway and Jordan Missions titled ‘Violent RightWing Extremism; Prevention and Response,’ as well as an event on best practices to prevent radicalization in prisons.”

He also worked on research about counterterrorism for presentations and meetings. “Because of the internship, I became more knowledgeable about many cultures,” said Alrashedi. “I developed my communication and management skills as well.”

The experience has helped him shape his future goals. “After graduation, I want to study for a master’s degree majoring in international relations or diplomatic studies and then go back to Saudi Arabia to apply for a job with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he said.

When asked about his experience as a TU student, Khaled said, “Two words – comfortable and happy. TU will always help you become a successful person because people here are always willing to help. I would definitely advise anyone to not lose the chance to become a TU student.”

The most enjoyable moments for Khaled are hanging out with friends and playing soccer. If he could change one thing about the world, Khaled said, “Stop conflict and wars and spread peace all over the world.”

AN INTERNSHIP TO REMEMBER Alexander Clark Hometown: Swartz Creek, Michigan Major: Marketing Expected year of graduation: May 2020

Tiffin University senior, Alexander Clark, had a once in a lifetime experience when he accepted an internship at NCompass International in Los Angeles, California.

NCompass is owned by recent commencement speaker, Donna Graves HD 2018, and her husband Donnie.

Alex’s primary responsibility was to assist with experiential marketing projects. He helped with the Adult Swim Music Festival, the Pepsi Summer BBQ, the San Diego Comic-Con and the Pixel 3a XL Google phone launch.

“My absolute favorite memory from the internship was going to the Banc of California Stadium to meet clients for the Adult Swim Festival to learn about the inner workings of the music festival,” he said. “I gained a wealth of valuable information, as well as experience,” said Alex. “I learned new ways to approach marketing and more importantly, I believe that after venturing on this unforgettable trip to Los Angeles to take on this once in a lifetime opportunity, that I have truly grown into a better, more experienced and well-rounded individual.”

Alex enjoys his field of study. “Marketing provides multiple opportunities and areas of growth. There is a wide variety of focuses and variables that make marketing such an interesting area of study while allowing me to be creative.”

For future interns, Alex suggests they use their resources. “It never hurts to reach out and ask people you know for opportunities.

Also, do things that scare you because you will only grow.”

Alex will graduate in December 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He is a member of the men’s varsity soccer team and the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success. After graduation, he plans to travel, continue his education and start an entrepreneurial real estate venture.

LEAP OF FAITH

Autumn Cooper Hometown: Park Ridge, Illinois Living: New Lenox, Illinois Major: Marketing, minor in Human Resources Expected year of graduation: 2020

During her junior year, Autumn took advantage of TU’s study abroad program. She traveled to Cannes, France to enhance her fluency in French and work for the Semaine de la Critique, a portion of the Cannes Film Festival. “Not only did I get to enjoy the Cannes Film Festival, but I also was a part of its production.” Autumn translated French to English for American film companies, helped with ticket sales, scanned badges and answered questions.

Traveling overseas comes with various challenges, but Autumn was determined to overcome any obstacle she would face. “I had to take a leap of faith and try something new.”

Autumn learned many valuable life lessons, such as how to be independent, to think on her feet and learn that the world is diverse. Immersed in a new culture, Autumn was exposed to a new way of life. “I got frustrated at the parts of life I was not used to. In many situations, I turned them into learning experiences.

Studying abroad opened my mind and taught me patience.”

Autumn will graduate in 2020 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing and a minor in human resources.

She is a peer mentor, a student ambassador, President of TU’s American Marketing Association, a member of Zeta Pi Beta sorority and is involved in the music department. After graduation, Autumn plans to attend graduate school and pursue her dream job as a human resources director or marketing brand manager.

SMALL ACTS OF KINDNESS Jena Hoffman Hometown: Tiffin, Ohio Major: Exercise Science Expected year of graduation: 2021

John Holmes once said, “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.” Tiffin University junior, Jena Huffman, exemplifies this by giving back to the community with GlamourGals, a national organization that inspires volunteers to provide companionship and beauty makeovers to women living in senior homes.

In high school, Jena was a guest volunteer at a GlamourGals makeover during a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar.

She fell in love with the idea and started her own Tiffin/Fostoria chapter with a friend. They ran the chapter together until high school graduation, and then Jena founded a chapter at TU. Once a month, GlamourGals visits Elmwood at the Shawhan, an assisted living facility in Tiffin, Ohio, providing residents with makeovers, manicures and crafts.

“It is heartbreaking knowing how many nursing home residents do not receive visitors,” said Jena. “The main purpose of this organization is to end elderly isolation. We want to form friendships and bring extra joy.”

Jena also founded the organization Guys and Games for male students who visit nursing homes and play board games with the male residents. Being involved with GlamourGals taught Jena that small acts of kindness go a long way. “Seeing the smiles on the residents’ faces is so rewarding. Some residents even refer to us as their grandchildren. I hope people learn that friendship has no age limit. Many of these men and women have extraordinary stories to tell, and they just need someone to listen.”

As Jena listens to their stories, she has a story of her own to share. In December of 2018, Jena lost her dad suddenly to esophageal cancer. “It is by far the biggest hardship I have ever faced. It is difficult not having him here to help me celebrate my victories throughout my college experience and life.”

Although he is gone, his legacy remains in Jena. “My dad was and still is my biggest inspiration. He dedicated his life to the wellbeing of others.” Jena’s father was a detective, FBI trained sniper, police officer, an Army veteran, served in the National Guard, was Director of Security and Campus Operations at Terra State Community College and he received the Medal of Valor during his time at the Fostoria Police department.

Today, Jena shares the same quality of selflessness by giving back to the community whenever she can, particularly with GlamourGals. “I learned that life is too short, and I have promised myself to live my life to the fullest every day. If there is an experience you have always wanted to have or somewhere you have always wanted to go, do it. You have the world at your fingertips. Take advantage of the time you have and accomplish the things you may have been too scared to take on.”

Jena will graduate in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. In addition to GlamourGals, she is involved in the women’s golf team, academic advisory board, is a peer mentor, President of the Science Club and Vice President of Women in Science Society.

After graduation, Jena plans to attend dental school.

I CAN DO EVERYTHING ANYONE ELSE CAN Timothy Richardson, Jr. (TJ) Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky Major: Exercise Science Expected year of graduation: 2023

The things that make us different are the things that make us who we are. After all, we were born unique and are compelled to stand out.

Tiffin University freshman, Timothy Richardson Jr. (TJ), does not fit the typical mold of a college athlete. TJ found success on the court using only one arm.

When he was born, TJ’s shoulder was impacted in the birth canal. The doctor forced him out and it ruptured the nerves in his left arm. Doctors said his arm might correct itself after a few months, but it never did.

Growing up in an athletic family, TJ wanted to pursue basketball like his older brother. “I started playing basketball when I was four,” TJ said. “My dad bought a basketball rim and put it in the backyard. When I saw my brother playing, I just went out and tried to shoot with him. That’s how it all started.”

TJ’s brother was a huge basketball influence growing up. TJ would attend all of his games, and they would practice together which is how he learned to handle the ball and shoot. More importantly, his brother instilled a sense of competitiveness and a don’t-give-up attitude in TJ. “My family pushed me to show the world that I can do everything that anyone else can. Living and playing sports with the use of my right arm is only one challenge. I also have to overcome myself; like many people, I am my own worst enemy.”

Some of his real difficulties are things most of us with two working hands take for granted like tying his shoes or buttoning a shirt. “It did not take long for me to master both with the help of my physical therapist. Learning to serve a tennis ball was pretty tough but it did not take long to get the hang of it.”

TJ won multiple Special Olympics basketball awards and played tennis and softball with the organization. He also got the opportunity to play high school hoops.

TJ continued his passion for sports when he accepted a scholarship to play tennis at TU. “When I’m on the court, my mind is clear. There’s nothing in my way, and I can do anything.”

“My parents always told me that whatever I put my mind to, I can achieve. I wanted to play college sports, and I did it. I knew I was going to make it.”

TJ will graduate in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. After graduation, he plans to become a physical therapist and eventually open his own practice.

AUGUST First-Year Students Welcomed New full-time students (512 to be exact) were formally welcomed to campus at TU’s annual convocation. This number includes freshman, international and transfer students. New students hail from 27 states and 19 countries. Students were inspired by TU’s President and Cabinet to transform their lives during their time at TU, to challenge and become their unique selves.

Day of Giving: A One-Day Campaign Alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and friends made a difference in the lives of TU students by donating during TU’s “Day of Giving.” TU raised $43,782 through 146 donations. Donors made a significant impact on the Annual Fund which supports scholarships, financial aid, internships, study abroad programs, campus speakers, lab equipment, campus beautification and institutional development. The next “Day of Giving” is set for Wednesday, September 2, 2020.

Up in the Air Performs in England, Italy Tiffin University’s acclaimed a cappella ensemble Up in the Air performed two concerts in London, England and at the Vocalmente A Cappella Festival in Fossano, Italy, where director Brad Rees served as a guest speaker.

Spirit Rock Tiffin University revealed the newest addition to campus – a spirit rock. The rock can be painted by student organizations, athletic teams or other campus groups to promote their events or school spirit. The rock was donated by Burns Farms and Boes Brothers Excavating and Trucking of Fostoria.

SEPTEMBER Kidd Gallery Hosts “Microbial to the Molecular” The Diane Kidd Gallery hosted “Microbial to the Molecular,” etchings, mezzotints and new frontiers, an exhibition of prints by artist Craig Fisher. The intaglio etchings and mezzotint prints blend classic architectural and landscape imagery that transitions from mechanical to organic to the supernatural, on both macro and micro scale.

The Washington Center Visits Campus Reid May, Senior Director of Student Marketing & Admissions of the Washington Center stopped by the campus for the Center’s annual fall semester visit. The Washington Center Internship program provides students of all majors with a unique integration of work experiences and academics. Students obtain substantive, professional experience that is directly related to their academic and professional goals, which, in turn, provide them with a clear-cut advantage when competing for entry-level positions after graduation. More than 300 TU students have obtained internship positions through this program.

Green & Gold Weekend Green & Gold Weekend (also known as Homecoming) was celebrated September 27-29. Some of the highlighted events included the annual Alumni Symposium, Alumni Achievement Awards, Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony, tailgate party, TU football, 25+Reunion Luncheon, the Annual Golf Outing, a 20-year celebration of the graduate forensic psychology program and members of the Tiffin Society (formerly known as the President’s Club) gathered under a members-only tent at the football game.

Alumni Symposium The Office of Alumni Relations and Alumni Association hosted its fourth annual Alumni Symposium during Green & Gold Weekend. The symposium began with alumni panel sessions (about 20 alumni from multiple career fields shared their career and expert advice with students). The Symposium concluded with an alumni keynote presentation by Alexis Berg-Townsend, class of 2003, who is a certified worker’s compensation

specialist and social security disability attorney. Townsend advised students to prepare for life’s uncertainties, have a growth mindset and authenticate you. The symposium Dr. Willis Johnson Alex Berg-Townsend concluded with the presentation of Alumni Achievement Awards. The recipients were Dr. Willis Johnson ’82, President of Galilee College in Nassau, Bahamas and Patrick Collins ’14, NFL Agent at Creative Artists Agency.

FIRST GENERATION First Generation faculty, staff and students gathered in the Hayes Courtyard in celebration of First Generation Day. This day, recognized nationally on November 8, recognizes individuals who were the first in their immediate family/ household to attend as well as graduate from college. It also honors the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965 which emerged out of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty.

TU Hosts Acclaimed Swedish Vocal Ensemble The Real Group, a globally-acclaimed a cappella ensemble from Sweden presented a rare Ohio concert at Tiffin University. The Real Group is known for its creative jazz originals and reworkings of popular favorites. The Real Group also presented an informal vocal music workshop for TU students and visiting high school choirs.

Ohio Innocence Project Tiffin University’s undergraduate chapter of Ohio Innocence Project (OIP-u) hosted a guest speaker who had spent 15 years in prison for crimes that she did not commit. Nancy Smith, a bus driver for Head Start served 15 years for child molestation before a Lorain County Common Pleas Court judge reviewed the evidence in the case and entered a judgment acquitting her of all charges. Her conviction was based upon the testimony of very young children who were coached by their parents. The children’s stories contradicted each other and contained Nancy Smith inaccuracies.

Students Win First and Second Place Six students from Tiffin University participated in the Information Security Summit’s Capture the Flag Competition in Cleveland. Tiffin students split into two teams, competing against the University of Akron, Kent State, Cleveland State and others.

TU was invited earlier this year to become the eighth college or university in Ohio to host an undergraduate chapter of Ohio Innocence Project. OIP-u spreads awareness of the problem of wrongful convictions. Since its inception in 2003, the Ohio Innocence Project has released 28 wrongfully convicted Ohioans, who as a whole, spent over 525 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.

OCTOBER Celebrating CulTUral Uniqueness Speaker, trainer and consultant Daniel Juday presented as part of the University’s ongoing Celebrating CulTUral Uniqueness training. He spoke to faculty, staff and students about his experiences and work to build bridges of understanding and empathy across challenging “divides.” He deeply believes that all people matter, and Daniel Juday he has spent much of his life working in roles that have allowed him to develop thinking around the nature of education and learning, relationship-building and professional growth.

TU’s American Marketing Association Attends Conference Tiffin University American Marketing Association (AMA) students attended the third annual UNOH Regional AMA Conference and Competition. Led by Dr. Danielle Foster (School of Business), AMA students competed in three marketing competitions. All of the members shared that it was an incredibly valuable experience that gave them an opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone.

Justice Sharon Kennedy Visits TU During a breakfast with Tiffin University students and staff, Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy shared advice on achieving goals. Kennedy, who initially was a police officer in Hamilton Police Department pursued her goals and became part of a new generation of justice. She joined the Ohio Supreme Court in 2012 and was re-elected in 2014.

Diane Kidd Gallery Hosts “One Soldier’s PTSD Story” The Diane Kidd Gallery hosted “One Soldier’s PTSD Story,” an exhibition of drawings by G.A. Hunt, retired U.S. Army Major. Hunt was medically retired in 2019 for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Her drawings display her daily struggles living with PTSD and bring the realities of PTSD to the forefront through her expressive, raw and captivating drawing.

A New Leash on Life In remembrance of Veterans Day, Tiffin University presented “My K9s for Warriors Story” featuring Louis (Louie) Belluomini and his service dog, Star. Belluomini discussed stereotypes and myths about service dogs and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

NOVEMBER Helping Those in Need A special thumbs up to a very special group of Tiffin University students, faculty and staff who traveled to North Carolina during their Thanksgiving break to help those whose lives were devastated

by Hurricane Dorian. TU’s Student Government hosted multiple competitions to collect donations such as school supplies, clothing, canned goods, toiletry supplies and children’s toys. This is the third year TU students have taken a road trip to help those in need.

New Countries Welcomed New and returning international students were welcomed during TU’s 28th International Flag Ceremony. The flag ceremony is one of TU’s largest events that also recognize International Education Week (IEW). To date, TU is home to over 235 international students representing 33 countries. New countries welcomed this year were Afghanistan, Mongolia and Zambia.

“There are many indirect benefits I receive from the endowment scholarship,” said Grace Gregory, a senior at TU and recipient of the Werling Endowment Scholarship. Grace can worry less about financing her education and focus more on academic and extracurricular activities to create memorable experiences.

More importantly, she will attain a degree from Tiffin University.

“I am extremely grateful for each donor’s contributions to the endowment program. Their generous donations make a lasting impact on our college experience, and for that, I cannot thank them enough.”

This year, funds from 35 scholarships were given to 84 students.

Twenty-two more scholarships are currently in the fundraising stage to meet the minimum endowment level before they can be offered to students. Last fall, TU awarded almost $95,000 in scholarships to 97 students.

Endowed scholarships are essential for students to continue their education. Scholarships symbolize a legacy and the hard work students put into their schooling. THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE BOX Bascom United Methodist Church Reading the headlines, it seems as though bomb threats, shootings and other hate crimes are becoming more common. We get the impression that places like schools, churches and malls are unsafe and are soft targets for an attack.

Dean Durant, Pastor at Bascom United Methodist Church became concerned about the safety of his church. He reached out to Dr. Lacy Ellis, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Tiffin University, to create strategies for an emergency response if an attack occurred.

“We tend to have a mindset that shootings won’t happen in our small community,” said Pastor Dean. “But we live in a different world now, and we have to prepare.”

Dr. Ellis assigned one of her classes to perform a service learning project to help Pastor Dean. The students visited the church, conducted a walkthrough and documented areas for safety improvements. They then developed a plan to improve physical space, resources, training and a response plan. A few of the student recommendations were to keep all church entrances secure aside from the main entrance, installing several doors to limit open access areas, improving communication using ushers, technology and apps and determining a safe zone to meet. The students also recommended reaching out to the community to invite local police and fire to train with the church to practice their response as well.

Even when a plan is in place, Dr. Ellis advises everyone to keep their options open. “During a time of crisis, you have to think outside the box and use what is available to survive,” she said.

“Although you may have a plan, things may not go accordingly, and you have to be able to adapt.”

Dr. Ellis revisited the church to conduct a free ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate) training and demonstrated how to implement the emergency response plan her students created. Additionally, her students donated $75 to the church to allow them to purchase items that would improve their safety.

“This service learning project added value to my overall experience at TU by becoming involved with the local community. I developed useful skills and it added value to my life and future career. Because it was hands-on learning, I believe it enhanced my leadership skills as well. Critical thinking skills are very important in instances of an emergency such as knowing where all the doors are in a building.”

“I feel I got to know a little more about the Tiffin Community and how sometimes just a small adjustment in an emergency plan can make a huge difference in safety and security. Sometimes, in case of an emergency, it is hard to think fast. By being able to sit down and think out different plans for different scenarios with a group of people, I realized the importance of Lynnae Krantz listening because more ideas just bring more options—kind of like a second opinion. I realized the strength of the community and I want to go back home and help my community.”

“This project has contributed to my learning because our main goal was to make the church safer in case of a situation of an intruder. This has contributed to my future goals because I want to become a police officer. The police have to be involved with the response team and with the training of the community. I can use what I’ve learned in my home and in my dorm by being Bradley Woods prepared and having knowledge of a safe place in case of a disaster. And even in the classroom, I now think about knowing where I can exit a room just by looking around and thinking about what would work to block a door to make sure nobody can get in.

During this project, I also learned how expensive some of the safety materials are and how hard it can be for small organizations such as the Bascom United Methodist Church is to purchase some life-saving materials.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT CHALLENGES = OPPORTUNITIES

Higgins earned an MS in Criminal Justice Administration degree from Tiffin University. He holds an MA in Political Science and just completed a Ph.D. in December. “TU’s online program was intense,” he said. “It was as difficult as being in a physical classroom. I had to be disciplined in my research, reading and writing.” Because of that, Higgins said he improved his skills in organizing, time management, writing and research and he believes he is a better administrator because of it.

Calvin Higgins, Jr. Class of 2005 Master of Science in Criminal Justice - Online Lake Orion, Michigan Chief of Police - Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago (Detroit Branch) Calvin Higgins, Jr., ’05, knew he wanted to be a police officer when he was a child. When he hit college age, he pursued a criminal justice degree from the Ohio State University. Then the Columbus, Ohio, native moved to Largo, Florida, as a police officer. Within three years he was a detective and ready to move on to his next goal – a federal law officer.

Higgins first joined the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration where he investigated dangerous drug organizations in faraway places like Bolivia, Costa Rica, Brazil and Spain. Over time he moved into management with the DEA, but still, he wanted more.

“I am the type of person who is always looking for challenges, that is why I began running marathons and half-marathons, to challenge myself physically. But I also look for opportunities to expand my knowledge and learning,” says Higgins. When he started researching the best opportunity to earn a master’s degree in criminal justice, Tiffin University came onto his radar.

“I needed a distance-learning program because I was traveling the world as a supervisor with DEA,” he said. “I needed a program I could take with me anywhere. I started looking at programs in D.C. where I was living. Then I came across Tiffin University. I saw they were brick-and-mortar, and had an online program. I saw that the same professors taught both. That’s not always the case. It’s what I wanted.”

“I compared Tiffin to other programs and none compared. Tiffin was highly professional and well ahead of other universities that offered online programs,” he said. “In 2005, when I went through the program, Tiffin University was among the leaders in online criminal justice/criminology master’s programs. The coursework was relevant to the criminal justice issues occurring at the time. Moreover, the professors were very knowledgeable in the research of current criminal justice and criminology issues.”

His favorite memory was visiting campus. “As an online student, I was not required to visit the campus, but I chose to and I am glad that I did,” he said. “The campus was awesome, and it gave me a good visual reference when I returned to my online studies.

While visiting, I met with Professor Keith Haley, one of my online professors. Professor Haley made my visit all the greater by making me feel welcomed at Tiffin University.”

Now Higgins is Chief of Police for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago (Detroit branch) and he oversees a staff of 35 officers who work around the clock to safeguard bank employees, as well as secure the property and $9 billion in assets.

Before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Federal Reserve Bank system had a “security force,” Higgins explains. After 9/11, the federal government determined that the banking system could be a serious target of terrorism. Thus, the security force became an official “police force” with the power to enforce federal laws.

Thus far, Higgins said he hasn’t had to deal with any serious threats to bank security. “What I like most about my current career path is the immediate satisfaction of preventing crime and providing a secure environment.”

On the other hand, Higgins said his experience working for the DEA proved to him that the world is complicated. “Drug investigations and operations, why people sell, use, kill and die for drugs is complicated. Therefore, our response to these issues is complicated. The education I received from Tiffin University helped me understand immediate and long-term solutions to some of these drug issues. I learned how to think critically, research, communicate and manage my time.”

Higgins was a first-generation kid—meaning, he was the first in his immediate family to attend college. “My dad and mom did not have the financial means or opportunity to attend college.

However, they both instilled in me the importance of education if I wanted to improve my life and surroundings. They owned their own business and worked long hours to remove the financial barriers so that I could get a college degree if I elected to pursue it. In my senior year of high school, they informed me that our family was financially stable to pay for my college education.”

Higgins said he was an average C student but a good athlete, which was enough to get through high school. “Between middle school and high school, my family moved from a low income to a middle-income area and that proved to me that a college degree would improve my life,” he said.

“The high standards of Tiffin helped me keep my standards high,” he said. To students, he says, “Never stop pursuing education.

Education can occur in your everyday life or in a formal setting like Tiffin University. Wherever it may occur, never stop learning.”

Morrissey is a member of both the Tiffin University Athletic Hall of Fame as a student-athlete and the University of Rio Grande Athletic Hall of Fame as a coach.

DRAGONS POST THIRD HIGHEST D2ADA ACADEMIC RECIPIENTS IN THE NATION Tiffin University’s outstanding student-athletes were honored once again, as TU placed third nationally amongst Division II schools in the D2 Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement awards.

The Dragons totaled 149 honorees, tying Queens University of Charlotte from the South Atlantic Division (SAC). Independently, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference’s (GMAC) University of Findlay moved up to lead the pack this year with 211 honorees, followed by the Great Lakes Valley Conference’s (GLVC) University of Indianapolis with 163 award winners. The top five concluded with Gannon University out of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with 144 nominees.

The Academic Achievement Awards, in its 12th year, is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments of studentathletes at the Division II level. In total, there were 11,660 student-athletes from 185 institutions being recognized for the 2018-19 Academic Achievement Awards. This set the record for the most participation from institutions and the largest number of student-athletes being nominated.

In order for a student-athlete to receive an Academic Achievement Award, student-athletes must: ∙ have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale ∙ have attended a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college-level work ∙ have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year The 149 total is an increase of 53 from the 2017-18 season, as the Dragons vaulted from 21st in the nation to third this year.

DRAGONS FINISH BEST EVER 25TH IN LEARFIELD CUP STANDINGS It was the best Division II season ever for Tiffin University, as the Dragons finished 25th in the Learfield/IMG Director’s Cup standings.

This is the highest Tiffin has been ranked since their move to D2 in 2008 when they placed 205th. It is also the highest they have finished since 2017 when Tiffin finished 36th. The previous highest finish ever for Tiffin came in 2016 when they placed 34th.

Tiffin totaled 477 points and was the highest-ranked G-MAC school, easily outpacing Findlay (42nd with 350.75). No other G-MAC school cracked the Top 50. Grand Valley State led the pack with 1004 points, followed by University of California San Diego with 826.

For the Dragons, it was a magical year that saw 11 teams engage in NCAA Championship competition, eight-team champions, seven Coach of the Year honors, six Player of the Year awards, three Freshman of the Year citations, 140 All-Conference recognitions and a school-record 76 Player of the Week honorees.

Men’s and women’s track and field won both the indoor and outdoor titles, while men’s soccer and men’s tennis also won G-MAC regular season and tournament titles. Women’s lacrosse also won the regular-season championship and baseball claimed the tournament championship.

Jeremy Croy earned four Coach of the Year honors in track, while Phil Conley (men’s tennis), Joey Simcoe (men’s wrestling) and Erica Brown (women’s lacrosse) also garnered top coaching honors.

Kangni Gabianou (men’s soccer defensive player of the year), Miguel Garcia (men’s swimming), Trey Grine (men’s wrestling) and Elle Hamilton (women’s lacrosse) were Player of the Year winners and Miaisha Blair was twice named Field Athlete of the Year for indoor and outdoor track.

Garcia, Amanda Johansson (women’s golf) and Nicole Berry (track and field) were named Freshman of the Year.

Three teams qualified for NCAA postseason play, with men’s soccer, women’s golf and baseball getting the nods.

Tiffin University’s men’s indoor track squad finished third at the National Championships, while Tiffin also had two individual national champions - Jonte Baker in indoor track and Nick Mason in men’s wrestling.

In outdoor track competition, Tiffin finished fifth overall, with Baker winning another title in the 100 meters while teaming with Elijah Gauldin, Zion Cross and Quincy Scott to win the 4x100 national title. Marisa Gwinner also became the first women’s athlete to win a national title, taking first in the high jump.

GMAC RECOGNIZES 228 DRAGONS TO ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM The Great Midwest Athletic Conference announced the 2018-19 Academic All-Conference Team on Wednesday afternoon, and a total of 228 Tiffin student-athletes received the honor.

Those Dragons were named to the list of nearly 2,000 individuals from the conference’s 14 full-member and three associate member institutions competing in the 23 championships sports that the GMAC offers.

Tiffin’s total was third in the conference, behind just Findlay and Walsh. Broken down by sport, TU received 19 honors in baseball, 15 in football, six in men’s basketball, six in men’s cross country, 11 in men’s golf, 10 in men’s soccer, eight in men’s swimming & diving, 11 in men’s tennis, 17 in men’s track & field, five in wrestling, 14 in softball, 11 in volleyball, 13 in women’s basketball, six in women’s cross country, seven in women’s golf, 15 in women’s lacrosse, 27 in women’s soccer, five in women’s swimming & diving, eight in women’s tennis and 20 in women’s track & field. Notably, all 13 members of the women’s basketball team received the award.

To be named to the Great Midwest Academic All-Conference Team, the student-athlete grade point average must be a minimum of 3.30 based on the 4.0 system, the GPA shall be cumulative for the student-athletes entire collegiate career and the student-athlete must have completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution. Student-athlete GPAs reported by each institution were reflected through the spring semester.

2019 FALL ATHLETICS – BY THE NUMBERS People say you can use numbers to say anything. I agree. Let’s see what the numbers say about the fall 2019 athletic season at Tiffin University.

1. The number of times Tiffin had beaten Findlay in football prior to this season. Hadn’t been done since 1993. After this year’s 52-45 win at Findlay, a win which won the team the GMAC Championship and sent them to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in their history, it will not be a win soon forgotten.

2. The number of men’s soccer players to earn All-Region honors. Leo Hasenstab and Joel Daly both were named Daktronics All-Region honorees after Tiffin’s men’s soccer team won their second consecutive GMAC Tournament Championship.

3. The number of Tiffin University volleyball players on the All GMAC team.

Jenna Huffman, Loryn Huffman and Sam Fallis all were honored, with Jenna Huffman landing her fourth consecutive First Team honor. In her senior campaign, Huffman had a season for the ages, leading all of Division II with 4.75 kills per set, 522 total kills, 5.35 points per set and 13.09 attacks per set. All four of those marks are in line to be new GMAC records.

4. The jersey number of JaQuan Hardy. A number that opposing defensive players probably have imprinted on their brains, that they have nightmares about when they sleep.

Hardy was named GMAC Player of the Year. Hardy led the GMAC in rushing and yards per carry. In Division II, he is seventh in yards

5. Number of major award winners on the GMAC Football team. Besides Hardy, quarterback Nick Watson was named Offensive Player of the Year, Stanley Jackson Jr. was named Offensive Back of the Year, Charlie Cleveland was named Defensive Lineman of the Year and Cris Reisert was named Coach of the Year in his debut season. All of the athletes ranked high in the national standings in numerous categories.

8. The number of GMAC Athletes of the Week Tiffin University received in one monumental week (November 18 - 22).

Unprecedented. Maybe the single most glorious week in TU athletic history. Hardy and A.J. Nickoli (football), Fallis (volleyball), Jairus Stevens (men’s basketball), Caleb Gibbons and Pace Thomas (men’s soccer), Bryan LaVearn (men’s wrestling) and Jonah Sumfleth (men’s swimming) all landed selection in the same week. Six separate sports all earning at least one Athlete of the Week honor in one week.

9. The number of wins for the football team. TU finished 9-2, winning the GMAC Championship and earning selection to the NCAA Super Region 1 playoffs for the first time ever. It is hard to emphasize how big some of the wins this season were, or what it means for the football program moving forward.

Charlie Cleveland was named GMAC Defensive Lineman of the Year.

6. The seed of Tiffin’s men’s soccer team as they entered the NCAA regional for the fifth time in seven seasons. Quite the run for the Dragons, who seem to battle and leave it all on the field every time they play a game. Despite entering the GMAC tourney as the fourth seed, they won the title with two upset victories, bouncing back from some tough luck losses late in the season.

7. The jersey number of defensive lineman Charlie Cleveland.

Just as Hardy’s number terrorized defenders, Cleveland’s number is seared in the brain of offensive linemen and quarterbacks. The sophomore was second in the GMAC in both tackles for loss with

With a 10-2 mark, it is the first time in TU history that the volleyball team has finished second in conference play since they went to Division II, back in 2007. They entered the GMAC playoffs as the second seed (their highest seed ever) and reached the GMAC championship game, their first-ever Division II conference finals appearance.

What memories this fall’s performances have left all fans of TU athletics!
