Andrew J. “AJ” Felter Retired President, CEO, and Chairman Webster Industries, Inc.

Andrew J. Felter is a visionary business leader, mentor, and community champion with over 40 years of experience in industrial manufacturing and organizational transformation. His career began at Webster Industries, Inc., where he rose through the ranks before spending six years at Findlay Industries, then returning to Webster to lead the company through unprecedented growth and cultural renewal. Today, AJ serves as Director on the Board of Managers at Webster, following a distinguished tenure as President & CEO.

Under AJ’s leadership, Webster transitioned from an employee-owned entity to private equity ownership in early 2024, unlocking new strategic opportunities. He led the acquisitions of Action Vibratory Equipment and Allor Manufacturing, expanding the company’s capabilities and market reach. In 2025, AJ spearheaded the acquisition of Renold plc, transforming Webster into a global enterprise with nearly $500 million in revenue, in 14 global locations, and over 2,200 employees. These moves positioned the company as a worldwide leader in conveyor and transmission chains, sprockets, torque transmission products, steel leveling components, and vibratory equipment across diverse industries.

AJ holds a BSBA in Accounting from The Ohio State University and an MBA from Tiffin University. He continues to serve as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Tiffin University and Director of The Old Fort Banking Company. His ability to synthesize complex ideas into clear, actionable strategies has made him a trusted voice in both business and community leadership.

Shawn Smith is chairman and CEO of Dedicated Financial GBC. When he founded the company in 2015, his vision was to build a different kind of faith-based commercial loan portfolio management company—one that connects personally with those experiencing financial hardship while also redefining how a business can serve its community. Under his leadership, the company has grown between 50% and 200% year over year in nine of its first eleven years.

Dedicated’s approach has earned strong team member loyalty, deep industry relationships, and a growing client base of like-minded companies, including organizations within the Fortune 500.

Shawn has also built a philanthropic framework that leverages the resources of Dedicated Financial GBC to improve the lives of people in need locally, nationally, and around the world. The company contributes both financial support and volunteer time to help nonprofit organizations advance their missions. Shawn and his wife, Stephanie, along with their four children, focus their family’s philanthropy on children’s health and wellbeing, education, hunger, and other pressing social issues—areas that closely align with Dedicated’s broader commitment to serving those in need.

Shawn believes business has the greatest opportunity to change the world—and at Dedicated Financial GBC, he is working to prove it. Tiffin University’s academic procession, led by the marshals, begins with the graduating class. The graduates wear bachelor’s gowns with the appropriately styled hoods for their degree, displaying the University colors of green and gold.

The graduates are followed by members of the faculty in their appropriate academic attire, members of the Board of Trustees, the Provost & Chief Operating Officer, the President, and the platform guests.

The Mace

Tiffin University’s Commencement begins with the entrance of the University Mace, carried by the University Marshal. The mace symbolizes the University’s governing authority and is present only when the president is in attendance. It signifies the proceedings have official sanction. The tradition of the mace derives from the medieval times in England, when the mace was held by a bodyguard for dignitaries at ceremonial functions.

Ceremonial maces are used by governing bodies worldwide, including the U.S. House of Representatives and the British Parliament.

An ancient symbol of authority, it reminds us that universities are custodians both of the enduring traditions of learning and of the power they bestow upon those who come to learn. It is also a reminder that the learning process has not always been comfortable and easy.

The Tiffin University Mace is about two feet in length and four pounds in weight. The shaft is solid oak and the headpiece is a glass sphere bearing the University seal.

International Student Flags

All international students are recognized by having the flag of his or her country displayed during the commencement ceremony. The flags are placed on the graduation stage at the beginning of the commencement exercises.

The Bagpipe

The bagpipe was first used in medieval clan society of the Highlands of Scotland and later in the British military, playing outdoors to announce gatherings and to inspire soldiers in battle. It can be heard for up to two miles over land or sea under some conditions. To this day, the bagpipes are commonly used in formal ceremonies at colleges and universities around the world.

Yellow Rose

The yellow rose is presented to each graduate as a symbol of warmth, optimism, and friendship. It is a reminder of our tradition created by students and our Tiffin University family.

Academic Attire

As a result of our English heritage, caps and gowns have been used in America since Colonial times. Gowns are of three kinds. Those worn by bachelor’s are black with a closed front and long, pointed open sleeves. Master’s gowns are black, with long closed sleeves with an arc of a circle appearing near the bottom and a slit for the arm. Most specialist and doctoral gowns are black, faced with wide velvet panels. They have voluminous bell-shaped sleeves on which appear three velvet bars (usually black, but sometimes in the color of the subject area). Several universities authorize the wearing of alternate doctoral gowns which represent the institution’s colors.

The hood alone clearly shows the level of the degree, the faculty in which it was given, and the institution which awarded it. The level of the degree is shown by the size of the hood, the width of the velvet trimming, and in the case of the doctor, by the shape. The interior satin portion of the hood presents the colors of the institution at which the degree was earned. The color of the velvet trim represents the discipline.

The black mortar-board cap is worn for all degrees. The tassel indicates the school or division from which the candidate is being graduated. Those who hold doctoral degrees are privileged to wear tams and gold tassels.

The honor cords and medallions worn by graduates indicate academic honors, such as cum laude, magna cum laude or summa cum laude.

The stoles represent participation in study abroad programs or membership in various honor societies.
