Energy and the Environment Sustainable energy and environmental solutions are critical in terms of the future. They also shape the structures of the economy. A rapid change is taking place in energy production: fossil forms of production are replaced with renewable systems which are more distributed than before.

The research group in Energy and the Environment studies and develops methods of production which are sustainable in terms of the environment.

The activities of the research group are closely connected to the teaching in the degree programmes in Energy and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering.

FOCUS AREAS • Distributed energy systems related to renewable forms of production

Solarleap – more solar energy to Southwest Finland:

• Improving energy efficiency

PROJECTS

• The goal is to remove obstacles to the utilisation of solar energy in Southwest Finland and improve the competence of companies and other parties in the management of comprehensive solar energy system deliveries, system consolidation and profitability evaluation.

PLEEC – Planning for Energy Efficient Cities > Towards an energy smart city:

• The project arranges continuing education, carries out pilots and aims to develop permit and building guidelines.

• Environmental competence and communications

• The project aims to promote energy efficiency and sustainable development in cities by creating a holistic model of city planning.

• A model for energy efficient planning and an action plan will be developed for six participating cities: Turku, Jyväskylä, Tarto, Stoke-on-Trent, Eskilstuna and Santiago de Compostela.
