Innovation pedagogy Innovation pedagogy is a learning approach that defines in a new way how knowledge is assimilated, produced and used in a manner that can create innovations. It aims to enable the development of innovation competences, alongside with the study field specific competences, providing students the ability to participate into the innovation processes in working life. The Innovation Pedagogy Research Group is a developer of learning and teaching, a training provider and a research body. The central aim of the research group is to be involved in the development of iÂnnovation pedagogy and consequently future experts and business achievers. In Âaddition to research and development activities, operations include the commercialisation, training and consulting of innovation pedagogy. INTERESTED? Design Thinking
The development of products and services in complex operating environments requires having more extensive management abilities than before, taking the cognitive and physiological possibilities and limits of people into account, and studying and developing the inclusive methods related to these. The core value is human well-being, which results in well-being in other areas as well, such as the economy. • Design IS thinking – observing the larger picture and the connections between details and finding possibilities in even the smallest occurrences and changes in everyday life. • Design IS prototyping – quick experimentation and concrete action.
4
• Design IS experiential – multisensory and invigorating. • Design IS cooperation – emphatic, allowing of differences and drawing something new from them. Design sees everything through the eyes of people and acts as the connecting factor at the interfaces of phenomena and sectors. This makes us open to cooperation with all types of affiliates!

Energy Technology The engine research laboratory of Turku University of Applied Sciences has conducted applied research on internal combustion engines since the 1990s. Economical low-emission engines are needed to minimize the environmental impact and to control climate change. The Energy Technology research group also offers R&D expertise in energy recovery systems and the improvement of the energy efficiency of vehicles. Flexible fuel power sources – state-of-the-art engines: Long-term research projects investigate methods that enable internal combustion engines to meet the ever-tightening global emission standards while improving the energy efficiency of engines. The research primarily concentrates on the emissions and energy efficiency of diesel and gas engines in offroad vehicles, the marine sector and power plants. The aim is to develop diesel and gas engines that meet the emission standards while remaining compact, cost-efficient and capable of delivering the desired performance.

Energy-efficient auxiliary systems: Different auxiliary systems are required to increase the energy efficiency of internal combustion engines. Those systems have to be integrated closely in the engine cycle. In future, the utilization of waste energy streams, improved charging systems and high-end exhaust gas after treatment are an important part of the group’s R&D activities. Engine applications: The third key research area concentrates on the energy use of engines in land and marine vehicles. In future, this research area will include multi-fuel strategies and different types of hybrid propulsion systems. Advanced technologies alone will not solve the problems associated with energy use. Instead, these technologies must be used correctly to reach maximum benefits.

Energy and the Environment Sustainable energy and environmental solutions are critical in terms of the future. They also shape the structures of the economy. A rapid change is taking place in energy production: fossil forms of production are replaced with renewable systems which are more distributed than before. The research group in Energy and the Environment studies develops methods of pro duction which are sustainable in terms of the environment. The activities of the research group are closely connected to the teaching in the degree programme in Energy and Environmental Engineering. The group’s activities are a part of TUAS’ expertise in energy and resource efficiency. The topic of the research group is strongly emphasised in the strategies on the national, regional and the EU level (e.g. Energy 2020, the National Climate and Energy Strategy, the Regional Strategy of Southwest Finland).

Civil Engineering Various research and development projects, structure technical services and updating training in civil engineering are included in the activity of the research group. Research focus areas include digitalization of construction and information modelling, energy efficiency, indoor air and building health.
• Storing heat energy: depending on buildings’ need of heating and cooling, bearing piles can work as collectors of heat energy, waste heat can be stored via the piles or heat collected from solar energy. The developed system can be utilized in both redevelopment and renovation.
Examples of the projects:
There is diverse research equipment for different building physical measurements such as surface and drill hole measurements of dampness, thermographic surveys and airproof measurements. Also condition evaluation, condition and indoor air research and bridge checks are included in both education and field research. Students perform the research guided and supervised by their teacher. In updating training we offer e.g. building health and indoor air specialist education.
• INTOKE: the aim of the ESF-funded infra building information modelling project is to create a regional know-how network in infra building, develop methods based on information modelling, add understanding about the benefits of information modelling amongst people working in field of infra and guarantee small and medium-sized companies’ continuity in Southwest- Finland.
