Q&A with Amerivet

1. What is it like being an Under-represented Business Enterprise?

Being an Under-represented Business Enterprise (UBE) comes with both challenges and opportunities. Overall, the experience can be rewarding for those who navigate the regulatory landscape and leverage support programs effectively, but it requires resilience and strategic planning to overcome barriers.

We are glad Turner partners with UBE’s such as Amerivet, helping us grow and achieve success. Our partnership with Turner has increased our access to opportunities, increased our business development efforts, and has helped us overcome industry challenges and barriers.

2. What are some of the biggest challenges you face in the industry?

Access to Capital: Construction projects often require substantial upfront costs. UBEs may have difficulty securing loans or lines of credit to cover expenses such as equipment, materials, and labor.

Lack of Industry Relationships: Major contractors usually work with firms they know and trust. UBEs may struggle to build these relationships, limiting their access to subcontracts and partnerships.

Mentorship and Training: Many UBEs lack access to mentorship and training opportunities, which could help them improve business operations and scale more effectively. However, we are glad that Turner Construction mentored Amerivet through their Mentor-Protégé Program, which in return assisted our company to grow in capacity and level the playing field for us, as a UBE firm.

3. How can General Contractors, such as Turner, best support you?

The most effective support is providing us with recurring contract opportunities that increase in scope and value over time. We also highly appreciate internal referrals across Turner divisions, project managers, and estimators. Large general contractors (GC’s) in general can support UBE’s through various initiatives and best practices, which include mentorship programs, prompt payment policies, partnering opportunities, supplier diversity programs, and advocacy for UBE firms.
