Page Six War of the Worlds People took to the streets in a panic running in every direction. Women and children were screaming and crying. The cities of the world were under attack. In New York, a reporter was choking on poisonous gas. People were horrified at what they were hearing. But in the end, it was all fake.

In other words, the political times are uncertain, racial tensions are high - and people are misinformed and frightened at what might happen next.

This was the infamous CBS Radio / Orson Welles / War of the Worlds broadcast in October 1938. The H.G. Wells’ story about aliens landing was told to a live audience of approximately 6 million people via a series of simulated news bulletins that sounded so realistic, the nation went into chaos, or so they say.

Technology has put in our hands the ability to fake just about anything. From creating fake photos and sound bites to compiling fake video footage - we can do it all from the comfort of our computers at home. We can also broadcast these fake messages, with great ease, to the whole wide world, via the internet. Add in the social media influence, and a group of misinformed and frightened people, and you’ve got a weapon on your hands more threatening than any gun or bomb. The question is, what can we do about it?

The widespread outrage that followed is legendary. The police, news reporters and photographers descended like locusts on the studio. The public, upset at being duped, called for retribution. Then the government threatened added regulations against the industry for their irresponsibility. The whole thing was a mess. More than 12,500 newspaper articles were written - most of them by editorialists who chastised the very medium of radio itself. The recent rise in radio listeners had begun to cut into the newspaper’s bottom line, and it is said they took this chance to discredit it further. “The nation as a whole continues to face the danger of incomplete, misunderstood news over a medium which has yet to prove that it is competent to perform the news job,” wrote Editor & Publisher, the newspaper industry’s trade journal. Sound familiar? Most of the fallout was justified if you think about it. The postdepression, pre-World War II situation in the U.S., under Franklin D. Roosevelt, meant that political times were uncertain, racial tensions were high - and people were misinformed and frightened at what might happen next. Fast forward to today where over 6 million viewers recently watched a live video of hurricane Irma on the internet. An ominous face appeared in the threatening clouds. The “Face of Irma” it was called - and word spread fast. In the end, it was all fake. This time, however, there were no cops, no calls and no regulations. The whole thing was simply dismissed as being a normal part of life on the internet. People also didn’t run out into the street in a panic, and no one was technically hurt by the fake stories. So, other than the real hurricane, no harm done - right? News networks everywhere jumped at the opportunity to reveal the hoax and bash the internet as being unreliable and full of fake news. There also wasn’t much anger or fallout like in 1938. Maybe that’s because the U.S. isn’t dealing with a post-depression economy or World War II anymore. Instead, it is dealing with economic uncertainty, Korea’s Kim Jong-un, and the many faces of Donald Trump.

06

Ah, there’s the rub. What might happen . . . next.

Ironically, the people that posted that fake hurricane video probably earned a hefty profit from paid Google ads as a result - hence their motivation for doing it. In conjunction, news outlets that reported on the hoax also benefitted by re-posting the video again, except this time within context. That’s the problem with the current system. Ad-driven content. Google, Facebook and other social media platforms reward participants who generate a lot of viewers and interest. They don’t really care much about the content or the subject matter - which opens the system up to a lot of abuse. Mainstream media news editors meanwhile, who are required to follow the rules and regulations of their industry, have had to sit back and watch blog sites beg, borrow, steal, plagiarize and fake their way into the cracks. These interlopers are then being rewarded, per se, for breaking the rules. So when the news network can’t show you that video of a building blowing up, you turn to the enabling force of YouTube or Facebook instead. But what about when the information is wrong? I’m guessing that it’s only a matter of time before a fake video, photo or sound recording results in the death, or even the lynching, of an innocent person. I also fear that the genie can’t be put back in the bottle - and fake news is here to stay. I just hope the government, and the law, are prepared for some of the potential panic and problems that could arise as a result of it. Because unlike 1938, this is a whole different world - and this information war has only just begun. - Catherine Barr @CatherineBarr | cbarr@westvancouver.com

Holmes Sweet Holmes He pulls no punches, and doesn’t mince words. But underneath, Mike Holmes is a kind and gentle soul who cares about people and the quality of his industry. Here’s our exclusive Q&A with the television star and renovation expert who knows what it takes to ‘Make it Right’, every time.

Q: How did you get started: Well, it was pretty simple. My dad was a jack of all trades, master of none, (I didn’t understand that until I got older), and you know he tried to kick me away, but he realized that I was very interested. I was stuck to his leg, and he just started to teach me. One thing led to the next, and then I’m 19, I’m running a company with 14 employees. Next thing you know, years and years later I’m giving the network crap and I’ve got a television show. That’s the way it all went. It was a very strange journey, but I loved it. I don’t regret anything happening in life. Everything is a lesson. Q: When is it time to renovate? When it comes to the time to renovate, you’re going to have to look at your house and ask ‘what is important’ - and I’m trying to emphasize that word “important”. What is necessary work? Roof - necessary. Electrical - necessary. Windows and doors - that’s lower but it’s necessary because anything to do with the performance of your house or the efficiency of your house, everyone needs to pay attention to that. And that includes the furnace. Q: What are the most expensive things to renovate? Well, a lot of things can be expensive, depending on what you choose. But, if you bought a house that was supposedly renovated and has all new everything - new electrical, new plumbing - yet they didn’t pull any permits for your house and it’s falling apart after you buy it, that makes it a nightmare. Nightmares are the most expensive renovation you could ever have in your house - because I guarantee it will cost more to fix it “wrong” than it will cost to do it right in the first place. Q: What are the least expensive things to renovate? When you come to the least amount of money to do something, do a new bathroom, cause that’s important. Or do a new deck. Because anytime there’s a new bathroom in the house or a new deck, this is something that people like. Q: What should people look for in a renovation company or tradesman? How can we verify their skills and experience? You know you’ve got to learn to trust your instincts more than anything because there’s a lot of good people out there that can con you. Some appear to be really nice guys. The truth is you have to know how to weed through

Photos: submitted and used with permission

who’s good and who’s bad. You can tell the good guys by simplicity. They are automatic teachers. They can’t help it. When you ask them questions, they want to go into detail. They come in with a list of references, and they encourage you to phone them. They want you to see their work. That makes them an automatic teacher. If you can find a contractor like that, pay attention - but don’t let that be the end of it because now you have to do your work. Pick up the phone and call the references - and there better be more than three. Go see the work. That’s what you need to do. If you can follow that process, odds are you’ll never get screwed. Q: What can you do when a renovation goes wrong? The worst part about this is that the majority of the wrong renovations make really good stories. Which is why I probably have a show that is so big around the world. But it’s a shame because that shouldn’t happen. When you tell someone you’re going to do a renovation like a kitchen, the automatic response to it is usually ‘I’m probably going to get screwed on this’ or ‘It’s going to be late and cost me more money’. That’s not supposed to happen. That’s not the reality. That’s just what everyone expects. That’s not the way it’s supposed to be. If you find the right people, everything is a wonderful dream and that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Q: Are you familiar with the market here in Vancouver? Lots of people are renovating instead of selling. Any hints for homeowners in Vancouver? Toronto has been very similar, with 20 to 30 offers for a house. Removing all conditions [when buying a house] is the most idiotic thing I’ve ever seen in history. What people need to do is learn to have patience. It’s

Working together as client and contractor is the key to success and helps you stay on budget, says Holmes. NorthVancouver.com NorthVancouver.com| |WestVancouver.com WestVancouver.com

great in Vancouver that they’re turning to renovation because now they can put money into the home because it’s clearly a higher value. Patience is everything. Patience to find the best contractor. Patience to educate yourself about all the material. The patience to withstand it - to know when to move out of the house or when to be part of it. There’s so much patience involved here that if you don’t have it, then don’t do it. Q: What’s the best way to stay on budget when renovating? How can you control your costs? Every good contractor, and I specify this again, stays on budget - unless you change your mind too much during the process. Example - I want LED lights, I don’t want LED lights. These are the impossible people even I don’t want to work with. However, being part of the job is also as important as the patience and the educating yourself about the materials. This means being with the contractor. Have regular meetings. Understand everything that’s happening in every moment. I always encourage people to be part of the renovation, because I want them to know. It isn’t as simple as ABC. Just because it’s framed, doesn’t mean it’s going to be finished in two weeks. There’s so much of a process that needs to be done. So if you are part of it, better for you. Document everything. Take pictures before, during and after. They will always benefit you. Q: What do you think of DIY (Do-It-Yourself) and what advice do you have? First, ask yourself, ‘do I have anything in my mind, body or soul that makes me want to do it myself?’ If not, then don’t. Call a pro. But some people have actual talent. And I’ll tell you this - more women fix things in their home than men. I don’t think anybody realizes that.

Mike Holmes on set renovating a kitchen. It’s always better to “do it right” the first time than come back and fix mistakes.

Q: Does being on television allow you the luxury of “doing it right”? What happens when regular people can’t afford the best stuff? When I do this, I care to do it right. It’s a passion for me to make sure I do it right. I could use cheaper stuff, but I’m not going to do that. Do you want me to make it worse for you, or do you want me to make it right? Sometimes a contractor should refuse to do it. As contractors, we need to educate people on where they need to spend their money and on what. Q: Do you have any favourite charities? I am the ambassador to SOS Children’s Villages. I love it. I’ve gone to Africa twice to help the kids. I’m also the ambassador to World Skills Canada. Because for me it’s all about helping the next generation learn about our business. We also encourage women to get into the trades. I also started the Holmes Foundation a few years ago. We give away scholarships and bursaries every year to help train and educate people in the trades. Q: What do you do in your spare time? Spare time is when I try to sleep. I also love to be on my boat, which I don’t get to do a lot of, but I try when I can. Q: Where will you be in five years? I’ve made a five-year plan three times since I’ve started television. The “television “plan always worked out, but now I’d like to plan for what I personally want to do. I think within five years I shall semi-retire. Maybe something like one month on, one month off. But I’ll never retire fully from being involved in life. Catherine Barr @catherinebarr cbarr@westvancouver.com

There’s a lot of honesty in a room full of men wearing no pants. But then again, that was the whole point - dropping your drawers and

being honest about just how devastating prostate cancer can be. It started when a group of friends rode their bikes across Canada to raise money for their cause. This year, that same group was back together organizing the Pants Off event for their friend’s father fight, and for the Prostate Cancer Canada Network. Live music, food and drink samples and auction items made for a fun fundraiser where there was no embarrassment allowed, just awareness, and an emphasis on getting our guys checked out - early.

Vancouver’s North Shore Craft Beer Week OCTOBER 6 – 13

Welcome to the inaugural craft beer week on Vancouver’s North Shore! This year, we toast the legendary history of brewing in our community and our bright future with a week of celebrations. The North Shore has a rich past of craft brewing and was home to Canada’s first ever microbrewery – Horseshoe Bay Brewery in 1982. Now, we play host to five (soon to be seven!) craft breweries leading the way with tasty beers. Try special casks, attend fun events and learn more about our local brews while collecting stamps on our Ale Trail Map. www.westvancouver.com/vancouvers-north-shorecraft-beer-week

John McDermott

Puccini’s Turandot

In concert, whether he is sharing the stage with a top notch group of musical friends or touring the world as part of the famed Three Irish Tenors, McDermott continues to enchant audiences with his beautiful voice and sensitive renditions. This tour features songs from his latest release, “Raised on Songs and Stories”, and a variety of favourites from his vast recording catalogue.

To stunning effect, Puccini’s final opera combines his musical mastery with a tale as old as time. Based on Persian legend, and set in ancient Beijing (Peking), Turandot is the dramatic story of an icy princess, emotionally imprisoned by her own vengeful cruelty, who sets herself and her people free when she opens her heart to love.
