1 - TAKE ME HOME FROM THE BALL GAME

The Vancouver Mounties and Portland Beavers gave fans at Capilano Stadium (now known as Nat Bailey Stadium) more than bonus baseball on May 28, 1962.

In the 12th inning, night seemingly turned into day. A fireball lit up the sky between 10:40 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. It prompted Mounties shortstop Jose Valdivielso to run for the dugout, fearing a plane was crashing. Teammates and opponents followed.

“Other people thought it was an off-course rocket, a spaceship, a comet, a flying saucer,” wrote the Vancouver Sun’s Ian MacDonald.

2 - AT THE NAT

It was arguably the biggest news of the 2013 baseball season at Nat Bailey Stadium.

The Vancouver Canadians became the third team to win three straight Northwest League championships, shutting out the Boise Hawks 5-0 on Sept. 9.

But, on Sept. 3, something else generated worldwide headlines after strange lights were spotted in the sky above the diamond at Little Mountain.

It was actually a drone campaign dreamed up by MacLaren McCann ad agency to promote the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre’s new Planetarium theatre. In less than two weeks, the video generated a million views on YouTube.
