SMITH CHEVROLET-CADILLAC celebrating 90 years of quality service

S

ince 1926, Smith ChevroletCadillac has provided the Turlock community with service they can trust. The auto dealer is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, and hopes to continue growing alongside the customers they value so greatly.

Smith Chevrolet-Cadillac got its start nearly a century ago, when Charles Smith sold his yam farm in Oregon to pursue a career as a traveling auto and bicycle parts salesman. When the opportunity to buy a car dealership in Turlock arose, Charles jumped at the chance and purchased the property for $3,969.79. The payment was made on April 1, 1926, and Smith Chevrolet-Cadillac was born.

Smith Chevrolet-Cadillac coowner Lee Smith, grandson to Charles, now owns the dealership along with his brother, Larry, and has taken joy in serving the residents of Turlock since he began working at the lot in 1972.

“It’s been a very good living in various ways – not just monetary,” said Lee. “It’s always been about customer service. It’s not about the selling; it’s about taking care of a person even after the product has been sold.”

Whether it’s selling new and used cars or providing quality repairs in the dealership’s service shop, making sure that customers

leave with smiles on their faces has always been Smith ChevroletCadillac’s number one goal. It’s the dealership’s friendly atmosphere that keeps its clientele coming back, said Lee, as well as a staff that pays attention to detail.

“It’s all about treating others how you want to be treated,” he said. “The goal is to treat them so that they want to come back, and so that they feel comfortable about getting their oil changed or tires rotated because we have employees that actually take their time and look at each car carefully.”

In addition to showering their customers with appreciation which shows through their service, Smith Chevrolet-Cadillac also does their part to give back to the community as a whole.

Through involvement with the Turlock Cemetery Board, the Salvation Army and the City of Turlock’s Little League and Police Department, the Smiths have made sure to support the Turlock residents that have carried their business over the last century.

“We always choose to buy in Turlock and support local organizations and businesses to keep the money in town,” said Lee. “When you buy and support businesses in town, you’re supporting people in the community.”

also a generous supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps to empower injured veterans and their families. Over the course of four years, the car dealership has hosted an annual golf tournament which has raised a total of nearly $70,000 for the organization. Following this year’s golf tournament, Smith Chevrolet-Cadillac plans to donate 20 percent of the funds raised to the Wounded Warrior Project, and the other 80 percent will be divided among various local veteran organizations.

After winning three Reader’s Choice Awards, Lee said that the news was humbling for the business.

“It actually makes us feel very good that our efforts are appreciated,” he said. “It’s not that we’re looking for it, but it certainly does feel good.”

Smith Chevrolet-Cadillac is looking ahead to the future, having recently installed a solar power system and completing plans to hire an additional 50 part-time employees.

“I think the future looks great,” said Lee. “We’re growing and have excellent employees…we’re just happy to see the future improving, and as time goes on I think our economy is going to increase dramatically and we expect to benefit from that.”

S

ince taking over Turlock’s Ford dealership in 2015, owners James Figurell and David Price of Price Ford have made it their mission to be a family-friendly auto dealer that the community can rely on.

A countrywide search led the pair to Turlock’s doorstep nearly two years ago, and according to Figurell, it was the city’s welcoming atmosphere that ultimately brought them to their decision.

“My wife and I spent time looking at communities where Ford stores were available, and Turlock really stuck out to us,” said Figurell.

Price Ford has quickly made itself known to residents, sponsoring various festivals and raising nearly $8,000 for programs at both Turlock and Pitman high schools through the Drive One 4 UR School program, which raises funds for donations in turn for test drives of Price Ford vehicles.

The bond between Price Ford and the Turlock community has not only been solidified through the business’ involvement with charity work for the city, but through their acceptance of a Readers’ Choice award.

“It certainly was very unexpected, but very welcome,” said Figurell. “We’re glad to hear everyone enjoys doing business with us.”

The local dealership has also taken strides to hire Turlock area employees, and has added an additional 17 full-time workers since 2015. The lot’s selection has grown as well - Price Ford’s inventory has grown from just 200 available vehicles to now stocking between 450 and 500 consistently. The business’ service speeds have also increased drastically, meaning that work done on brakes and tires in the Price Ford shop is speedier than ever before. These are just several ways that Figurell and Price have improved the overall quality of Price Ford’s service since taking the helm two years ago.

“If there were someone in your family who you could buy a car from, that’s who we want to be,” said Figurell.

Buying a car is an event that continues for the duration of the car’s life, he added, making a customer’s relationship with his or her auto dealer that more important. With about 70 percent of Price Ford’s auto sales coming from Turlock residents, Price Ford aims to strengthen the bond between dealer and customer with every transaction.

“That’s what the ultimate goal is - to set up long term relationships with people in the Turlock area and be their dealer,” said Figurell.
