The two go naturally together – government and leadership.

It takes caring and interested individuals, who are trusted leaders in their community in one area or another, to choose to step into roles in government. The best of which have a servant’s heart, thick skin, and a willingness to give of their time and talents.

We are very proud of the success of our inaugural Touch a Truck event. With over 70 vehicles, big rigs, trucks, types of equipment, and a visit from the Sheriff’s helicopter, we are beyond thrilled to have had over 2500 attendees come out for our free community event. We can’t wait to do it again next year.

Those who are today leading our community-based organizations, our non-profit organizations, and our largest business entity organizations, recognize that our work and missions can only be carried out successfully if they have leaders at the top who have a servant’s heart, thick skin, and a willingness to give of their time and talents. From there, it is the bridge that connects us where the synergy happens.

As we are approaching the last several weeks of 2023 our minds are shifting and looking forward to launching 2024 strong and bold. We are working on our event projections, members networking opportunity concepts, business growth and support training, and lining up speakers and presenters. We are very excited about the ideas and plans we are developing.

With the multitude of initiatives that the Modesto Chamber of Commerce Team is engaged in, we are thankful for the relationships we have that knit us together across all these lanes of leadership. We serve and represent our members, the business community at large, and our overall community. We do this successfully, in part, because of those who we partner with across all fronts, including government. We are not a partisan organization, and we are proud to have strong positive engagements with all our elected officials and their representatives, regardless of their office, role, or party.

Our foundation board is developing our scholarship fund process while also focusing on our mission, vision, and purpose statements. Our board of directors’ nomination season has brought us many inquires of interest. Our Leadership Modesto application season has just wrapped up. Announcements as to who will be accepted for the 40th class, which starts in January, are coming soon.

I believe this is one of many ingredients going into the pot of our growth and successes throughout our organization and our programs, committees, and events. This also applies to our education initiatives around career exploration, inspiration of our future workforce, and sparking excitement to explore in our youth.

C - Community At its heart, the Modesto Chamber is a community of like-minded business owners who share the vision for enjoying a thriving economy and creating and maintaining our community as a vibrant place to live, work and play. With over 100 years of history and experience in the Greater Modesto Area, we understand what it means to be a business owner and customer in our community, with featured events such as local and regional forums, Ag Aware, Harvest Luncheon, and Family Day. Chamber members get the opportunity to actively engage in and influence the community they live and work in.

A - Advocacy The Modesto Chamber supports local businesses and is an active advocate for the common interest of its members.

The Chamber has an Economic Development Committee and a Government Relations Council. These advocacy committees are dedicated and proactive in representing our members and community. They work to address business initiatives and relieve the regulatory burdens businesses face may face. The Chamber is also honored to certify local businesses and organizations through our California Green Business Network Stanislaus Program. Through this we create more conscientious and sustainable ways of life while lowering the cost of doing business for our community and future generations.

R - Relationships The Modesto Chamber of Commerce specializes in building relationships and serving as the nexus to businesses, nonprofit organizations, and governmental agencies. With over a dozen Committees, Programs, and Events in which our members can participate, the Chamber offers ample opportunity to meet and connect with other business owners in our community. As a relational organization, the Chamber works with its members to ensure the opportunity to connect and grow in every niche and industry to help build and cultivate long-lasting relationships among business owners and community partners alike.

E - Education The Modesto Chamber of Commerce values education and offers members the opportunity to stay on the leading edge with new and emerging information and training that will set your business apart from the rest. In partnership with Modesto Junior College, the Chamber is pleased to offer an assortment of trainings applicable to any business or industry for credited completion through our Chamber University platform. Our Chamber also works with members to provide a platform to speak to their own industry expertise and invite other members to learn from those leading our local industries.

S - Service The Modesto Chamber of Commerce offers its members a wide range of opportunities to promote and engage their business across industry and community lines. The Chamber Weekly E-Blast, Website, and our Progress Magazine provide opportunities to advertise and promote your business, keep up to date with articles about local businesses in our community, and stay in the loop about up-and-coming Chamber and community events. Our Chamber also offers indemand materials, such as Member contact list, Federal and State compliance posters, export document services, and so much more. Chamber members can also personalize their business profile within our website and have access to our Member-Only Information Center, where members can connect with other members, boost their social media presence, promote job postings, public events, and member-to-member discounts.

announcement Growing Together Because Every Journey Matters Community Hospice, Inc. Announces Name Change

“After several years of diligent research our Leadership team with the support of our Board of Directors have decided to move forward with a rebrand for our beloved organization,” said Alisa Bettis, President and Chief Executive Officer. “The timing of our rebranding could not be more perfect as we begin to celebrate our 45th Anniversary. Our unwavering commitment to helping our friends and neighbors when needed most has been maintained as our primary focus.

We have identified new needs throughout the years and developed and adapted programs to ensure we continue to be there for our community members. We are very excited to unveil our rebrand as we feel it is critical to move our mission forward, while also honoring our legacy.”

Over the past 45 years, Community Hospice & Health Services has grown from our humble beginnings as a small all volunteer-based hospice organization serving Stanislaus County. Programs today include hospice care, supportive palliative care, pediatrics care programs, bereavement support for hospice families, outpatient mental health counseling, school-based counseling, and Camp Wokini, a youth grief camp formerly known as Camp Erin of the Central Valley.

The organization also has a Durable Medical Equipment division and retail operations divisions including seven Hope Chest Thrift Stores throughout the Central Valley. Today, services are provided in Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Merced, Calaveras, Mariposa, Tuolumne, and parts of Contra Costa, Sacramento, Alameda and Santa Clara counties.

“One of our primary rebranding goals was accessibility to all Community Hospice & Health Services programs. What we learned from our many focus groups was that many people think we only offer hospice care, they were surprised to learn we offer many other support programs.

By aligning all our programs under one name we hope that our community members find ease in accessing additional resources they may not know are available,” shared Kristin Mostowski, Director of Public Relations. “Our rebrand will include the new brand name, website, social media channels and a ‘Growing Together Because Every Journey Matters’ campaign.”

In position with the rebranding efforts, the Community Hospice Foundation, which was founded in 2001 to raise funds to support the organizations vital resources and compassionate mission, will also be rebranded to Community Hospice & Health Services Foundation.

Community Hospice & Health Services looks forward to providing the same compassionate and quality care and support they have provided throughout the years. The vision for the organization remains the same, to be the Provider of Excellence in quality care, education, and support. Protecting the Central Valley’s Most Valued Treasure

The Central Valley is unique region of California that offers a variety of opportunities for businesses.

The valley focuses on supplying the world’s food due to the rich soil and ideal weather. The business opportunities that are found in the valley are integrated with agriculture, which has generated a thriving economy in the valley. The products farmers produce create a market that is widely used. Grown right in our backyard, the Central Valley supplies the world’s population of almonds. The almond industry contributes to the valley’s economy by providing a variety of jobs such as pickers, transporters, processors, packagers, and deliverers.

As a lawmaker, I have the opportunity to better assist the valley’s most valued treasure. My team and I have worked closely this past year with the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau and local farmers to meet the needs of farmers in order to better provide and manage the population’s food.

Working with these organizations and businesses has given me insight of the legislative bills that are introduced to the Assembly floor. Earlier this year I supported both Assembly Bill 552 and Assembly Bill 605 which support the growing economy that the valley very much relies on. AB 552 (Farmers equity Act of 2017: Regional Farmer Equipment and Cooperative Resources Assistance Pilot Program) would provide both financial and technical assistance to any farmer who struggles financially in purchasing the proper farm equipment needed in order to produce the world’s food.

AB 605 (Cal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Supplemental Benefits Expansion Program) would better assist residents of the state the access to fresh produce by providing food stamps such as in the form of EBT cards to purchase groceries for any individual. The Central Valley is the bread basket of the world, and I will continue to advocate for our businesses and farmers in Sacramento. It is an honor and privilege to represent the City of Modesto and Stanislaus County.is now

We invite our local businesses spanning diverse sectors of industry to present their business and career paths to an audience over 5,000 students hailing from various districts throughout Stanislaus County. Students will visit your unique business booth, giving them the opportunity to introduced to career paths within the various sectors of business and industry available within our community.

County partners will be showcasing an array of diverse and exceptional Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways.

This exhibition will spotlight the wide variety of rigorous and relevant CTE programs offered in high school. These programs integrate academic knowledge with practical technical skills, enabling students to apply their learning in real-life, hands-on contexts. This prepares them with valuable skills for today's increasingly complex workforce.

Students will apply this experience to their high school balloting process. This is your chance to inspire their educational journey choices as they prepare for the transition to high school. Ultimately, our goal is to help each student become well-prepared to pursue their passions through enrollment in a career training program and/or college that best aligns with their interests.

Through the Inspire Youth Inspire Dreams Expo, we aspire to empower every participating student in realizing their dreams and discovering the plethora of opportunities available to shape their future careers right here in Stanislaus County.

Using an Online Platform to be a Positive Leader in Your Local Community

Development And Infrastructure Day Development and Infrastructure Day started at the Modesto Irrigation District (MID) office. Our group was greeted by Day Chairs, Melissa Williams, Public Affairs Manager for Modesto Irrigation District and Will Wong, Director of Utilities for the City of Modesto.

Modesto Irrigation District (MID)

MID provides irrigation water to approximately 3,100 customers and electrical service to approximately 132,000 customers.

City of Modesto Will Wong, Director of Utilities, provided an overview of the Utilities Department which involves below ground infrastructure such as water, sewer and storm drain lines.

The Department consists of three Divisions: Engineering, Water and Wastewater. The Department serves 75,000 water connections and 60,000 sewer connections.

The Utilities Department is funded by utility rates, which cover the cost of service. Will highlighted some of the Department’s programs and regional efforts: • Water Conservation Program - Rebate to replace grass with turf • Cost Share for Sewer Line Replacement – “Call Us First” • Provide Recycled Water to Del Puerto which serves 45,000 acres • Public Works Department • The group visited the City’s Fleet Facility. We were greeted by Bill Sandhu, Director of Public Works, and Dave Barr, Fleet Manager.

Bill provided an overview of the Public Works Department which involves above ground infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks, traffic signals, streetlights, street signs.

The Department consists of six Divisions: Streets, Fleet, Traffic, Airport, Forestry, and Solid Waste.

The Public Works Department is funded through the City’s General Fund, and Measure L and Measure H funds.

Measure L provides funding to improve local streets and roads.

Measure H provides funding for general services such as tree pruning, street maintenance, and lighting upgrades.

Bill provided notable statistics for the Public Works Department: • Over 250 lane miles of roads rehabilitated.

• Over 400 handicap ramps have been improved.

Dave Barr, led our group through a tour of the Bus and Fleet Maintenance Facilities.

Traffic Operations Mark Murphy, City Traffic Engineer, provided an overview of the Traffic Operations Center and how the traffic signals function. Traffic signals across the City transmit data to the Traffic Operations Center.

Cameras have been installed at traffic signals to allow the ability to monitor traffic demands and outages. New camera technology allows the ability to detect vehicles at signalized intersections and coordinate sequencing based on traffic demand.

Economic Development - Planning The day concluded in the City’s Council Chambers with the City’s Economic Development Department. Edgar Garcia, HUD Supervisor, led our group through a General Plan Presentation.

The City is currently in the process of updating its General Plan, which essentially plans and maps out the land use within the City’s boundary and sphere of influence. november 2023

General Manager, Jimi Netniss, began with a presentation providing an overview of MID. MID is one of the few irrigations districts in California that provides water and power. The District was established in 1887 and started delivering irrigation water through the canals in 1904. Electrical service followed in 1923. MID’s source of water is the Tuolumne River and shares water rights with Turlock Irrigation District and the City and County of San Francisco. In 1994 MID began providing treated water to the City of Modesto through the Modesto Regional Water Treatment Plant located at the Modesto Reservoir.

Leadership Modesto – Public Safety Day In our penultimate educational day in the yearlong Leadership Modesto program, the LeMo team had an eye-opening experience during the Public Safety Day. Prior to our day, all of the LeMo team was charged with participating in a ride along with either the Modesto Police department, or the Stanislaus County Sherrif’s department. This began a remarkable insight into the daily lives of those that serve to maintain the public’s safety. Some of us had less exciting experiences, while some of us had more adventurous experiences. All of the experiences illuminated that the daily lives our public safety officers deal with are far more difficult, and sometimes dangerous, than we believe the general public understands.

Our day began at the Modesto Police Department and were treated to a meeting with Chief Brand Gillespie. He gave us a very insightful understanding to some of the struggles he has faced under his leadership and the many things that the MPD is doing to overcome those barriers. We were then treated to experiential education of four of the ways the MPD works to deal with crime that focuses on the high level of safety for every officer in their daily activities. We learned about the SWAT team and its tools of the trade, the Real Time Crime Center, the MPD Drone unit, and the K9 unit/ program. All of these were very interesting and each of these programs are tools the MPD uses to help ensure the safety of the officers and the public they serve.

The next part of our day was spent at the Public Safety Center and the Stanislaus County Jail. This part of the day was very impactful. We saw all levels of the facility and how the facility is set up to maintain the highest level of safety for the officers and the inmates. We were then treated to lunch at the facility and had a chance to hear from the Stanislaus County Sheriff, Jeff Dirske. He shared with us the long path that led him to his current leadership position and some of the things he has learned throughout his career. He demonstrated a strong passion for his job and his team that helps maintain all the aspects of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

As our day began to wind down, we made our way to the training Center where young cadets learn the trade of Public Safety. The Training Center uses various tools to assist with the training process and we were able to experience the Force Options Simulator.

This is a tool that uses a screen and live action scenarios for officers to react to. We got to participate in this activity, armed with pepper spray, a firearm, and a taser to dispel the situation and learn how to respond with appropriate force. Depending on what we said and how we reacted, an officer was given choices to give us that were based on how we interacted. It became very apparent how quickly things can escalate/ change and what the appropriate response is to any given situation.

It also led to lively discussions as we debriefed each of experiences.

We ended our day with a meeting with the Alternative Response Models that are being implemented in our community to deal with the community and maintain public safety. We had the opportunity to learn about MPD newest program, Modesto Police CHAT (Community Health and Assistance Team) program.

This is a collaborative program with MPD and Mental Health and Homeless specialists work together to deal with the public safety of our community with nonviolent or mental health concerns in our community.

This frees up officers to deal with “real crimes”, while the CHAT program officers deal with these issues in a more effective and humane way to provide help and services needed. This program is growing and they are doing amazing work in our community.

This was a very interesting day. It was eye-opening how much all public safety servants do to maintain the highest levels safety for our community and county. It was interesting to learn how all these agencies work together in a very large and complex county to support each other to maintain public safety. Our participation in this day and ride along allowed us to see how all of these servants handle their jobs and the community with extreme professionalism and training to offer compassionate and supportive service to our community.

5 Minute Car Wash was originally opened by Charles Fenley back in June 1963. The 5 Minute Car Wash family spans four generations with the Fenley family still actively involved in the day-to-day work at the Car Wash. You may even run into Charlie when you come in, so make sure to say hello!
