Embracing Holidays the

In February 1923, Miriam Minton, a senior at Lodi Academy, took a trip to the Sierra Nevada for her 18th birthday. After graduating, Miriam studied nursing at Loma Linda University where she met and later married fellow medical student, Lawrence Peterson.

The two would settle in Lodi, where Miriam managed her husband’s medical practice and successfully raised five children. At the time of this photo, the Bank of Stockton had been serving customers for 56 years.

There’s no better time than the holidays to extend cheer to our loyal customers and friends. As the

A Message From The President & CEO Reflecting on 2023

By Trish Christensen Throughout 2023, the Modesto Chamber of Commerce has been dedicated to growing within our community and amongst our members. We’re thrilled to share that not only have we gained 100 new members, but also celebrated 58 ribbon cuttings, and celebrated our 113th anniversary.

This year the Chamber announced the introduction of new events that promised to be both successful and purposeful! We were thrilled to bring innovative experiences to our community: Inspire Youth Inspire Dreams Expo: This event was designed to ignite student’s passions and guide their career journeys.

With over 4,000 students from diverse districts in Stanislaus County, local businesses showcased various industries and career paths, offering direct interaction introducing them to our community’s rich career landscape. County partners spotlight their Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, bridging academic knowledge with practical skills to prepare students for the workforce. This immersive experience empowers students to make informed high school choices and pursue tailored career training or college options that align with their passions.

Touch – A – Truck Family Day: Our inaugural event where families in our community explored and fostered a sense of curiosity and excitement. This event provided families an opportunity to learn about trucks, equipment, and businesses that help keep Modesto running and growing. This event featured a spectacular array of vehicles, vendors, and entertainment to create a wonderful experience. Proceeds from this event fund trade scholarships through the Modesto Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Meet Your Local Leader Day: An opportunity for our community to connect, engage and gain valuable insights from the leaders who help shape our region. This initiative provided a unique platform for our community members to interact directly with local leaders, ask questions, share perspectives, and build meaningful connections. By fostering open dialogue and understanding. This event aimed to strengthen the bond between leaders and the community, ultimately contributing to the growth and well- being of our vibrant city.

Annual Sustainability Symposium: This year we celebrated our 2nd Annual Sustainability Symposium. This event took place at The Century and featured a series of engaging lunch presentations. Distinguished speakers from various industries including Water, Food Diversion, Air, Transportation, Power/Solar, and Simplified Savings within the California Green Business Network joined us for this inspiring event.

The California Green Business Network is a program of the Modesto Chamber of commerce with the goal of leading our county in the direction of sustainability.

When you are a certified green business, it shows your community and customers that sustainability is your priority.

It shows your commitment to taking action to conserve resources and prevent pollution in your facility and operations.

It sets the example to your community that your business complies with environmental regulations in the areas of water, energy, pollution prevention and air quality which leads the path to inspire other businesses to become green certified.

We believe these events will continue to add significant value and enjoyment to our community, furthering our commitment to engagement and enrichment. In 2024, our aim is to continue the journey of organic growth, creating a vibrant and thriving community for our members and partners. We look forward to continuing our active participation in the community.

Our commitment to fostering collaboration, supporting local initiatives, and engaging with the community remains steadfast.

C - Community At its heart, the Modesto Chamber is a community of like-minded business owners who share the vision for enjoying a thriving economy and creating and maintaining our community as a vibrant place to live, work and play. With over 100 years of history and experience in the Greater Modesto Area, we understand what it means to be a business owner and customer in our community, with featured events such as local and regional forums, Ag Aware, Harvest Luncheon, and Family Day. Chamber members get the opportunity to actively engage in and influence the community they live and work in.

A - Advocacy The Modesto Chamber supports local businesses and is an active advocate for the common interest of its members.

The Chamber has an Economic Development Committee and a Government Relations Council. These advocacy committees are dedicated and proactive in representing our members and community. They work to address business initiatives and relieve the regulatory burdens businesses face may face. The Chamber is also honored to certify local businesses and organizations through our California Green Business Network Stanislaus Program. Through this we create more conscientious and sustainable ways of life while lowering the cost of doing business for our community and future generations.

R - Relationships The Modesto Chamber of Commerce specializes in building relationships and serving as the nexus to businesses, nonprofit organizations, and governmental agencies. With over a dozen Committees, Programs, and Events in which our members can participate, the Chamber offers ample opportunity to meet and connect with other business owners in our community. As a relational organization, the Chamber works with its members to ensure the opportunity to connect and grow in every niche and industry to help build and cultivate long-lasting relationships among business owners and community partners alike.

E - Education The Modesto Chamber of Commerce values education and offers members the opportunity to stay on the leading edge with new and emerging information and training that will set your business apart from the rest. In partnership with Modesto Junior College, the Chamber is pleased to offer an assortment of trainings applicable to any business or industry for credited completion through our Chamber University platform. Our Chamber also works with members to provide a platform to speak to their own industry expertise and invite other members to learn from those leading our local industries.

S - Service The Modesto Chamber of Commerce offers its members a wide range of opportunities to promote and engage their business across industry and community lines. The Chamber Weekly E-Blast, Website, and our Progress Magazine provide opportunities to advertise and promote your business, keep up to date with articles about local businesses in our community, and stay in the loop about up-and-coming Chamber and community events. Our Chamber also offers indemand materials, such as Member contact list, Federal and State compliance posters, export document services, and so much more. Chamber members can also personalize their business profile within our website and have access to our Member-Only Information Center, where members can connect with other members, boost their social media presence, promote job postings, public events, and member-to-member discounts.

announcement BAC Community Bank Announces Internal Promotion of Sylvia Figueroa to Chief Credit Officer BAC Community Bank is pleased to announce the recent internal promotion of Sylvia Figueroa to the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Credit Officer. This promotion reflects both Figueroa’s personal achievement and the commitment of BAC Community Bank to recognize and nurture talent from within the organization.

In 2015, Figueroa joined BAC Community Bank as a Commercial Loan Underwriter, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and a newfound passion.

Figueroa’s career in finance and banking began with a strong educational foundation. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance and an MBA, both from the University of the Pacific. Her commitment to professional development and pursuit of excellence continued as she graduated from the Pacific Coast Banking School.

Her exceptional work and commitment to upholding the highest of standards has Sylvia Figueroa resulted in promotions to Commercial Loan Portfolio Manager, then to Credit Administrator, and now Chief Credit Officer.

She has applied this education to a banking career that began as an intern at Union Safe Deposit Bank. Over a six-year span, she honed her skills as a Credit Analyst and Relationship Manager at a total of three large institutions.

In a pivotal turn in her career, Figueroa ventured into the world of finance, gaining invaluable experience during her seven-year tenure with a Fortune 500 company that is an international leader in its industry.

"Sylvia's extensive experience and dedication to the field have been instrumental in the success of BAC Community Bank. Doctors Medical Center Nationally Recognized as Safe Sleep Hospital Doctors Medical Center was recently recognized by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program as a bronze Safe Sleep Hospital for its commitment to best practices and education on infant safe sleep.

As a Nationally Certified Safe Sleep Hospital, Doctors Medical Center is recognized for following the safe sleep guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and providing training programs for healthcare team members and family caregivers.

Community Hospice & Health Services Celebrates National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

(Modesto, CA) – Throughout the month of November, Community Hospice & Health Services will be joining organizations across the nation in recognizing National Hospice and Palliative Care Month (HAPCM). This year’s HAPCM theme is “Courageous Conversations.”

For more than 40 years, hospice has helped provide interdisciplinary, supportive care to millions of people, allowing them to spend their final months wherever they call home and surrounded by their loved ones. Hospice teams craft plans of care that ensure pain management, therapies, and treatments all center on the patients’ and their loved ones’ goals and wishes. Hospice care also provides emotional support and advice to help family members become confident caregivers and adjust to the future with grief support for up to a year.

Each year, over one million Medicare beneficiaries receive care from hospices across the United States. EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy Traumatic or disturbing experiences can sometimes get stored in our memories in a way that keeps us from moving on. As this old experience gets triggered, we may experience symptoms such as, depression, anxiety, nightmares, insomnia, hyper-vigilance and more.

The process of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) allows these memories to process or be integrated and resolve these old experiences. The eye movements, or BLS (bilateral stimulation), used in EMDR seem to unlock the nervous system and allow your brain to process the stuck experience. Research supports that the effects of BLS are similar process to REM. REM sleep is believed to be a vital part of our sleep that allows us to process experiences and information from our day. The eye movements that occur in REM sleep are believed to be a side effect of your brain processing in your sleep. However, you will be fully conscious and awake in EMDR. You are always the one in control, it is your body and nervous system that allow the healing. Studies support the efficacy of EMDR as a treatment for PTSD, depression, anxiety, phobias, and OCD to name a few. Community Christmas Tree (38th year) Opening on November 24th through December 18th Event sponsored by Soroptimist International of Modesto, Modesto Sunrise Rotary, with our partners KHOP 95.1FMand Vintage Faire Mall Daily from 10:00am to 8:00pm with exceptions: specific hours will be posted at our Kiosk We are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization -Tax ID number 77-0435675.

Our Mission: A child, no matter their circumstance, deserves to live the dream of a “Magical Christmas Morning!” Please help us give the “Gift of Hope” to one of our children on the Community Christmas Tree.

This project supports over 2000 disadvantaged youth in Modesto. For most of our children, these are the ONLY gifts that they will receive for Christmas. All children in the family from birth to 17 years are included and both the children and donors remain anonymous.

Event Location and How Does It Work?

A Christmas tree and Kiosk are erected at Vintage Faire Mall, on the upper level above Santa's Village. Tags are on the tree with the names of our children as well as a “Needed Gift” and a “Christmas Wish”. Individuals select a tag, check it out, then shop for a child and return gifts (unwrapped) to our Kiosk.

To ensure that all of our children receive a gift, we encourage monetary donations as well!

All donations are tax deductible!

Stanislaus County — A Greener 2023

The Modesto Chamber of Commerce has grown and learned so much about the businesses surrounding our community that are dedicated to a greener & safer way of doing business.

We started the year with Green Team Meetings, our Annual Sustainability Symposium, and Green Certifications.

In 2023 we had the honor of celebrating Mocha Magic Café & Bake Shop, RecruitGigs, Evident Business Solutions, and The Sweet Potato Pie Company for completing the green certification checklist through our California Green Business Network, Stanislaus Program. With their completion, we celebrate them with a green ribbon cutting and a plaque to honor their efforts for a brighter future.

The California Green Business Network is a program of the Modesto Chamber of commerce with the goal of leading our county in the direction of sustainability.

When you are a certified green business, it shows your community and customers that sustainability is your priority. It shows your commitment to taking action to conserve resources and prevent pollution in your facility and operations. It sets the example to your community that your business complies with environmental regulations in the areas of water, energy, pollution prevention and air quality which leads the path to inspire other businesses to become green certified.

Our Stanislaus Green Team had some amazing speakers come in and present this year- we meet every third Thursday of the month here at the chamber at 12PM. We had Valley Water Collaborative with their mission to maintain and improve the quality of life in the northern San Joaquin Valley by implementing programs that provide access to safe drinking water for residents, and by engaging in activities with the goal of protecting or enhancing the quality of groundwater used as drinking water for residents in the region.

SunOpta- who is also a green certified business, discussed their focus on helping make the planet and its people healthier through plant-based foods & beverages, organic ingredients, and organic foods & beverages.

We welcomed Sol Microgrid mid-year. They created a network of large-scale solar farms that can be directly linked to the individual store to offset kWh used via virtual net metering. Clean energy while saving money and reducing operational expenses.

Grid Alternative, a local nonprofit, is working to ensure that all communities have access to these incentives and the benefits of clean transportation, adding EV charging to your business, nonprofit, local school, or multi-family property.

VIP-Valley Improvement Projects, presented with a mission to improve the quality of life of underrepresented and marginalized residents of California’s Northern San Joaquin Valley by advocating for social and environmental justice. We learned a lot about their goals to make a healthier community and way of life for the future.

We ended the year with Assemblyman Juan Alanis.

We had a great discussion about sustainability, solar power, and the future of electric vehicles in the state of California.

PEOPLE ON THE MOVE New Regional Director of Development for UC Merced UC Merced, a top-100 research university and the fastestgrowing public university in the nation, appointed Brad de la Cruz as Regional Director of Development, North Central Valley. Since 2021, de la Cruz has been responsible for expanding the university’s development strategy from Merced to Sacramento. His role encompasses growing the major gift donor base, forging long-term strategic partnerships, and enhancing regional engagement. De la Cruz also serves as the staff liaison for the BS/ MD Medical Education Pathway -- a partnership among UC Merced, UCSF, UCSF-Fresno and UC Merced’s future Gallo School of Management.

With more than two decades of professional experience, de la Cruz previously served as Vice President of Marketing and Fund Development at United Way of Stanislaus County.

His extensive background includes roles as Senior Development Officer for Sutter Brad De La Cruz Health, Director of Development for UOP's Brubeck Institute, and Senior Development Manager for the Gallo Center for the Arts.

Ramon Mendez is a name synonymous with community involvement and dedication in the city of Modesto, California. As a vital member of the Sisbro Innovation team as the Marketing Bro, and a longstanding Ambassador for the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, Ramon has consistently demonstrated his commitment to making his community a better place. With more than three decades of volunteer service, Ramon's impact on Modesto is immeasurable.

Ramon worked tirelessly to ensure that those affected by the virus received the support and resources they needed.

One of Ramon's most prominent roles in the community is his six-year tenure as an Ambassador for the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. As an Ambassador, Ramon serves as a liaison between the Chamber and local businesses. His responsibilities include welcoming new members, attending ribbon-cutting ceremonies, and helping organize and promote Chamber events. Ramon's unwavering dedication to this role has made him a respected and recognizable figure within the Chamber and the larger Modesto community. Ramon’s favorite activities consist of volunteering with the Modesto Chamber, cooking, gardening, and reading one of his favorite books, The Greatest Salesman.

Ramon's dedication extends to the Latino community as well. He served on the Latino Community Roundtable for five years, where he worked on initiatives to promote the interests and welfare of Modesto's Latino population.

His efforts contributed to a more inclusive and equitable community environment.

Ramon's commitment to community service began in 1991 when he started volunteering for the Ryan White Consortium, where he eventually served as the president for two years. The Consortium is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals living with HIV/AIDS. During his tenure as president,

Ramon's journey as a Chamber Ambassador began when he volunteered with the Latino Community Roundtable, and he was introduced to the Modesto Chamber's welcoming team. Recognizing his passion for community involvement and his ability to connect with people, Ramon found the chamber to be a great place to continue Volunteering in the community with the Chamber.

I.J. Larsen Pumps - A Legacy of Service and Community Support Written by Kathryn Kim Ramos, Sisbro Innovation Website and Digital Marketing Consultant

In 1990, a dedicated employee named Mike Humble joined the ranks of I.J. Larsen Pumps as a Technician and eventually rose to the position of General Manager. Mike's journey to this role was marked by his service in the United States Navy from 1975 to 1981, where he honed his skills as an aviation electrician. In addition to his exemplary service in the United States Navy, Mike Humble holds an honorable discharge, a testament to his dedication and commitment to serving his country and, ultimately, his community and fellow Veterans through I.J. Larsen Pumps. Little did he know that his path would ultimately lead him to a new chapter as the owner of the company.

In October 2002, Mike Humble and his wife, Vicki Humble, took over the reins of I.J. Larsen Pumps. This transition marked the beginning of a new era for the company, characterized by a deep commitment to providing the best service to its customers and making a positive impact on the community.

Mike's Navy background instilled in him the values of discipline, attention to detail, and unwavering dedication, qualities that continue to define the company's approach to serving its customers.

One of the remarkable stories that emerged from I.J. Larsen Pumps is the friendship between Mike Humble and Bob Larsen. Both veterans, Mike and Bob, shared a bond that extended beyond their work at I.J. Larsen Pumps. Their shared love for planes and their strong sense of camaraderie exemplified the company's dedication to teamwork and unity.

Another valuable member of the family is Mark Crist, affectionately known as "Uncle Buck." Mark has been an integral part of the company for 36 years and currently serves as the Shop Foreman. His dedication and support have been valuable and irreplaceable to I.J. Larsen Pumps.

One of Mike Humble's enduring legacies was his commitment to teaching and providing the best service to customers. His passion for his customers was evident in every aspect of the business, and this commitment became a cornerstone of I.J. Larsen Pumps.

While Mike Humble was out in the field, ensuring the pumps were in top shape, Vicki Humble worked her magic in the community. Vicki's dedication to her faith and her genuine love for the community made her a strong advocate for local causes and initiatives that support the Stanislaus County area.

The Humble family's involvement in community service has helped shape I.J. Larsen Pumps into more than just a business; it's a symbol of community support and a testament to the importance of giving back.

Robin Velthoen, the company accountant, has been with the Humble family since the beginning and plays a vital role in keeping the company's financial affairs in order. Her dedication, wisdom and support have been instrumental in the company's growth and success.

The Humble children grew up around pump trucks, imbibing the spirit of dedication to the family business from a young age. Kari Santos, the daughter of Mike and Vicki Humble, now serves as the Director of Operations at I.J. Larsen Pumps. Kari, along with her husband Joshua Santos and nephew Josiah Humble, continues the legacy of the company and has introduced automated green systems to improve the company's operations. Kari's passion for working alongside her parents, and Business partners is a testament to the tightknit, family-oriented culture at I.J. Larsen Pumps.

Kaiser Permanente Modesto Hospital Recognized With “A” Grade For Patient Safety Kaiser Permanente Modesto hospital received an “A” for limiting patient injuries, reducing medical errors, and preventing infections, according to the Leapfrog Group Kaiser Permanente Modesto hospital earned a top score of “A” for keeping patients safe in The Leapfrog Group’s biannual Hospital Safety Grades report.

After reviewing hospital clinical performance, Leapfrog assigns hospitals grades based on approximately two dozen measures that analyze patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections.

“Our commitment to safe, high-quality, person-centered care is the cornerstone of all that we do, and ensuring our patients, visitors and staff find safety and comfort in our facilities is a top priority,” said Aphriekah DuhaneyWest, senior vice president and area manager for Kaiser Permanente Central Valley. “This recognition is a reflection of the world-class care and dedication our teams demonstrate each and every day.”

This fall, 13 Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Northern California received “A” scores from Leapfrog including: Antioch, Modesto, Oakland, Richmond, Roseville, San Francisco, San Leandro, San Rafael, Santa Clara, Santa Rosa, South San Francisco, Vallejo, and Walnut Creek.

“Our physicians work tirelessly each day to deliver the best patient care, and we take great pride in providing the best service to meet the diverse needs of our patients,” said Sanjay Marwaha, MD, physician-in-chief for Kaiser Permanente Central Valley.

The Leapfrog Group assigns letter grades to nearly 3,000 hospitals throughout the United States. The grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring. More than 60% of Kaiser Permanente Northern California hospitals received an “A” grade. In California overall, only about 30% of the state’s hospitals earned the top grade.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits, released its Hospital Safety Grades after examining publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections at U.S. hospitals. The report includes data collected by national health care organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Scores are calculated based on more than two dozen publicly available measures, and hospitals are then assigned A, B, C, D or F grades for their safety records. The grades are released as a free resource to help patients and their families make informed health care decisions.

Kaiser Permanente Northern California, combined with Kaiser Permanente Southern California, earned 5 stars, the highest possible rating for Covered California’s “Overall Quality” rating. The health plan was compared to approximately 200 plans nationwide, and Kaiser Permanente’s 5-star plan scored among the top plans in the country.
