A place to serve and grow as a family BY MARIA ARELLANO

The Alvarez is a family of five, whose parents are Javier “Javi” and Rebecca “Becky” Alvarez. The Alvarez family came to the Red Shield through a family member in our baseball program. Javi and Becky came with their 3-year-old daughter Angelica to try out our T-ball program. Javi and Becky liked the Red Shield and its baseball program, they enjoyed that the program was so family-oriented and welcoming. During this time the Red Shield did not have a softball program so the Alvarez family went to another league for a few years. When Red Shield re-introduced softball to the program the same family member re-invited the Alvarez to return with not just one daughter but now two daughters that could be on the same team. The Alvarez family didn’t hesitate and came back that season. Javi and Becky said once again the Red Shield embraced them as they returned and found a new place and home to bring their girls. This time around Javi became an assistant coach to girls’ softball, while Becky soon learned to be a scorekeeper and team parent. Over the years their third daughter Ariani was finally of age to play. There have been years when the older two girls — Angelica and Aleah — played together and years when the younger two — Aleah and Ariani — have been able to play together. Soon Javi became a head coach and Becky the team mom of their softball

players. When asked what their first experience was like with the Red Shield, the couple were quick to say that they enjoyed that there was no favoritism. Everyone was treated the same and fair. Javi is Modesto born and raised. He loves sports as they were his way of escape in life. He used sports to keep him out of a lifestyle that could have led him down the wrong path. He met his high school sweetheart at Johansen High School. Becky’s parents moved to Los Banos during her senior year, so she decided to drive daily with her younger sibling to Modesto to finish her high school year at Johansen High. They found the Red Shield years later and fell in love with the programs. After softball the girls found the after-school program, swimming, and S.A.Y. Troops with Sunbeams. They quickly gravitated to being a part of the group and Becky became an assistant leader. The Alvarez family loves soccer when they are not playing softball and they brought their passion to the Red Shield by offering a mini season of indoor futsal during the summer. Javi shared that there is a feeling you get when you work with people that care and welcome you. It becomes contagious and makes you want to do the same. That

is what he felt when he came to our softball program. Javi said that same feeling is what he wants the youth to feel when they come in and are a part of our programs, even if they are not sports minded. “The Salvation Army is home in every way,” said Becky. “Walking in people are warm, welcoming, and loving with kids, families, and staff.” “It’s like going to grandma’s house with the kids,” said Javi. “There’s never a worry or doubt or reservation when you bring your kids to the Red Shield because you know they are in good hands,” said Becky. “The staff take extra steps to make sure kids are safe.” The Salvation Army has grown to be more than a place for their children to grow and learn. During the COVID-19 pandemic there were long periods of uncertainty as the family’s income had suddenly decreased. “One day out of the blue The Salvation

Army Red Shield and its staff showed up at our door,” Becky said. “I was in the shower and heard the girls saying ‘The Red Shield came.’ They came with food boxes, kids supplies and gifts. This was unexpected but so needed. Then through the pandemic Red Shield did this drive thru food distribution, which helped us as well as so many other families we knew going through a hard time. Everything in the delivery was put to good use and the girls were excited as the Red Shield remembered them and brought them activities.” The Alvarez said that the Red Shield is so important in the lives of kids and families that they decided to buy their first home in the neighborhood. Post COVID, their desire is to be more involved as life starts to settle back down. They already have their girls back on the field as they coach, score keep, team parent and fund raise for programs they have fallen in love with.

SOFTBALL/BASEBALL Every spring the baseball program helps young people develop basic baseball skills and teaches them teamwork and sportsmanship. The funding needed to continue this program is $44,315. Opportunities include sponsoring a team for the season at a cost of $600 or having your business’ name on the jerseys or the outfield wall.

KIDZ DAY 2022 | AFTER SCHOOL

Red Shield tutoring program making a difference

BY PAWAN NAIDU

The Red Shield provides an after school tutoring program for students at local schools. The need for this program was elevated during the pandemic when many

students and families were left to adapt to distance learning. The program was started in 2006 after the Modesto Salvation Army saw a need for homework assistance for the kids that attended the local schools, according

to Salvation Army Red Shield Operations Manager Maria Arellano. The local schools that they serve are Bret Harte, Shackleford, Fairview and Tuolumne. Red Shield serves anywhere between 12 to 24 students daily and about 200 a year. The program has advanced from only providing home assistance to providing snacks, age appropriate projects when not doing homework, games and an educational hour. During the pandemic Red Shield found that their services were needed more than ever and were able to provide essential services to students and families. “Not every home has WiFi access, so one of the perks of coming to the Red Shield is that they could use WiFi,” said Arellano. “Students really come to rely on the assistance they get at Red Shield. When they need help with homework or a project, they come in full force. Even though the program is only 3:15-4:15 for homework, sometimes they’re in there until 5 or 5:15 because they want the help.” Schools have seen a positive impact

that Red Shield has had on their students and encourage families to explore other services beyond the tutoring program. “They are a gold nugget for this community,” said Shackleford Principal Sue McHann. “During the pandemic, the Red Shield were able to get tutoring, get meals, go out and do recess and were put on a schedule. What they provide is absolutely great, you could really see the difference.”

AFTER SCHOOL HOMEWORK & LITERACY PROGRAM Many of our children have no resources at home to help them to learn and complete their homework. Our staff and volunteers work with them every afternoon to help them to learn and excel at school in our homework and literacy assistance program. Funding for this program costs $73,125.

Thriving with the Red Shield over the years BY SABRA STAFFORD

When Sara Tubera was a youngster she got to experience first-hand the benefits of the programs at the Salvation Army's Red Shield Center. Now as an adult she has been volunteering her time to help support those programs. "The Red Shield touches so many lives, especially among some children and adults that maybe don't have anywhere else to go," Tubera said. Tubera's first experience with the Red Shield was when she was a 5-year-old and her parents signed her up for the martial arts class. Her parents were taking the adult classes and it became a fun family activity that would later turn into a family business, Tubera said. Tubera's parents began leading a program at the Red Shield to help teenagers, with an emphasis on keeping them away from the gangs in the area. As a teenager Tubera would take the neighborhood kids she was babysitting over to the Red Shield for a free lunch and an afternoon of swimming in the summer. "In the summer especially that free lunch was really important because some of the kids didn't have much food at home," Tubera said. Tubera's first paying job was as an umpire for the

Red Shield's little league teams. "That was a really fun job," Tubera said. As an adult working for Wells Fargo Banks, Tubera would help count all the donations raised during the annual Kettle Kick-off celebration. Years later, as the manager of Movement Mortgage, Tubera would move from behind the scenes to center stage as she led her team to raise the most donations at the Kettle Kick-off. She's also been a routine seller of the Kidz Day newspaper. "I love to help the Red Shield in whatever way I can," Tubera said. "It's meant a lot to my life and I know all the good it has done for that area."

KIDZ DAY 2022 | BASEBALL & T-BALL

A place to play ball at Red Shield BY DALE BUTLER

The Salvation Army Red Shield Center has been a refuge for thousands of at-risk youth since the 1970s and offers a variety of athletic programs for school-aged kids, including baseball, softball and T-ball. “Fifty years later and we’re still providing the same service,” said Red Shield Operations Manager Maria Arellano. “They built this facility to save lives and get kids off the streets by offering them a safe environment.” Red Shield sponsors a total of nine teams that play in the Stanislaus County recreational league, including four base-

ball (12-and-under, 10s, 8s and T-ball) and four softball (12s, 10s, 8s and T-ball). “It’s one of the most popular programs,” Arellano said. “The coaches are always giving the kids positive reinforcement to build up their self-esteem. They learn sportsmanship. They learn respect.” This year the Red Shield has the added feature of two brand new batting cages. The cages have been made possible through the generosity of the Derby family in memory of Stephen and John Derby, as well as the work of volunteers and members of the community. The 2022 season got underway on April 2 and runs through the end of May.

BASEBALL & T - BALL The baseball, softball and T-ball teams are always in need of volunteers to serve as coaches, assistant coaches, score keepers, team parents and snack bar help.

A place to build physical strength and self-confidence BY DALE BUTLER

Children, teens and young adults who are enrolled in the boxing program are taught physical, mental and spiritual endurance and strength. The experienced coaches are passionate about training young people in the “sweet science” at all levels and abilities, and providing a safe, structured and supervised athletic experience. Juan Barrera runs Red Shield’s boxing program and this will mark his 15th season coaching. Like many of the kids at the Red Shield, Barrera started learning how to box at a young age. “My dad was a fighter and started showing me boxing moves when I was 4-years-old, but I didn’t start [organized] boxing until I was 15,” said Barrera. He was drawn to the challenging nature of the sport and to the camaraderie of training with other young boxers. Barrera hung up the gloves at age 20 but couldn’t stay away from the sport for too long. He felt a burning desire to be a mentor and leader to the kids in South Modesto. “I grew up in the neighborhood at the Red Shield,” he said. “It’s given me structure. The kids are depending on me

to show up. I have to set an example, too. It keeps me grounded.” The benefits of boxing go far beyond the physical, said Barrera. “It’s not just about boxing,” Barrera said. “It builds their self-esteem and confidence. It’s good for stress. It gives them discipline.” “It’s easy to stay home and play video games and watch TV,” he added. “These kids choose to come to the gym and work out. We want to see them become champions in life.” The boxing program is open for boys and girls 6 to 18 years old.

BOXING The award-winning boxing program is staffed with knowledgeable coaches who work with the children, teens and adults to develop basic boxing skills, sportsmanship and physical fitness. The funding for this program costs $56,267.

KIDZ DAY 2022 | FITNESS CENTER

A place to grow healthy The fitness room at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center provides community members and students alike with the opportunity to focus on their fitness and physical health while in a fun and welcoming atmosphere. The fitness center has first-class cardio and weight training equipment, like incline treadmills, ellipticals, recumbent bikes and a variety of cable machines. After school, the center’s fitness room is open to kids 16 and older, or those younger than 16 can enter with an adult. A lot of kids utilize the weight room just to get exercise in, Red Shield Center Operations Manager Maria Arellano said, or they join programs, like boxing, that take place in the fitness room. “A lot of teenagers come in after school who like to work out…especially the junior high and high school kids — they’re really into working out and looking good,” she said. “And, the other kids can’t get into that room unless they’re in a program, so it entices them to be a part of that so they can utilize it, too.” Before students arrive in the afternoon, adult community members also utilize the fitness room, which offers Zumba and bootcamp classes as well. Individuals are able to purchase fitness class passes via

FITNESS PROGRAMS the Red Shield website, and attend courses led by instructors. “It gives people a place to come workout no matter the weather; if it’s too hot outside or raining they can come here,” Arellano said. “It’s a great place because kids and adults love it.”

The facilities will open in June with hours set between 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Masks will be required upon entry but can be removed while engaged in physical workouts with

A safe place to swim The pool at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center continues to play a vital role in the community by offering an escape from summer heat and providing a place for people to learn how to swim in a safe and controlled environment. “They know they’re safe in this pool because there’s a lifeguard watching them,” Red Shield Center Operations Manager Maria Arellano said. “They can come, have fun and not feel so afraid of the water.” Open swim times, swim lessons and water aerobics can be enjoyed at the pool, and the “vortex” slide provides another fun way for kids to beat the heat. Students can also take a course to become

a junior lifeguard and learn water safety, and a new swim program also gives kids the chance to join a team and participate in competitive water sports against each other. “Not only do they have free splash time, but they might also join a team and find something they’re really interested in,” Arellano said. “Every summer, the pool fills with local children from the surrounding community who can finally feel safe while swim-

ming”, Arellano said. “A lot of kids here don’t have those experiences of growing up with a pool, and especially when you come from a Hispanic culture, water can be a very scary thing,” she said. “Now when they come in, parents are starting to feel more comfortable that their kids are learning to swim and are safe.” The pool will be opened Monday through Saturday from June through August.

AQUATICS The full-size pool sees a lot of activity during the summer months for recreational swimming, swimming lessons and lifeguard training classes for adults and seniors. The funding needed for this program is $165,843.

KIDZ DAY 2022 | TEEN PROGRAM

Teens get a space of their own at Red Shield BY CHRISTOPHER CORREA

Red Shield’s Teen Program offers opportunities for teens to receive help with schoolwork as well as be able to socialize with one another. The program is open to all teenagers and young adults from 7th grade through high school. “Many of our teens come from poor families and their families often rely on them to watch over younger siblings while the parents work to support their family. When our teens come to the Red Shield, they can just be kids themselves and enjoy

exploring activities of their choice,” said Operations Manager Maria Arellano. Participating teens would typically meet in what is called the Teen Room. While the room is currently under construction and in the process of being renovated, the Red Shield continues to offer spaces for teens to hang out. Services are offered after school until 6:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Salvation Army Captain Magaly Laubach explained that, while there is construction underway, the need in the community is never put on pause. This was especially true during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people were forced to isolate, including children. “We know that the pandemic has been especially difficult for teens who found themselves isolated from their friends and missed out on many milestone events over the last couple of years. The Red Shield staff strives to help teens reconnect with each other and with adults who care about them,” Laubach said. Friday’s at 6 p.m. is when the organization also holds their Teen Night, a program geared to help teens be more com-

fortable in social settings, as well as giving them an opportunity to develop spiritually and emotionally. Arellano added that the program also offers several opportunities to go on field

trips and attend a variety of team building events, while being provided with snacks. “We hope to give the participants a space where they can relax and feel loved,” Arellano said.

GAME ROOM| Sponsored by 209 Magazine

A place to play and create BY MARIA ARELLANO

The Red Shield Game Room has always been a favorite spot for kids to just be kids. Over the years as adults return to the Red Shield with their children it’s common to hear them say, ‘I remember when the entrance to the Red Shield was in the game room.’ Over the last 10 years we have been continuously remodeling and upgrading our Red Shield. At the Red Shield we have recently moved our game room to a more kid friendly space. This is where we are undergoing our new look to move our 1980’s game room to a 2022 video-themed game room. A space where arts and crafts can get messy without damaging carpet. A place where kids can have a friendly tournament of Mario Kart or E-sports. A place where kids can gather and play board game or BINGO with the Activities Coordinator, Tammy. The game room is a fun, inviting space where kids can be kids and interact with their friends or make new friends. In the game room you will find our staff member Tammy, who loves working with the kids daily. She is always ready for them and remembers them on their birthdays, even newbies get to know Tammy quickly. Our new game room has online gaming, family-friendly movies, arts and crafts and arcade games like Foosball and air hockey. You can find this room as a drop-in center that is a cool down room in the midst of summer. Kids like the game room as it

is noisy but relaxing. You can just sit and relax or join in any activity being offered. The game room is open daily after homework program until 6:30 p.m. The new game room could use some love and adopting. You can donate your time, talent, or treasures by helping us ramp up the room. We are going with the modern E-Sport or Gaming theme. Today’s youth love gaming and crafting. In our game room we want to make the space inviting to what youth love.

KIDZ DAY 2022 | GYMNASIUM & RECREATION

A place to learn about teamwork The gymnasium serves as an integral part of the Red Shield Center by hosting an array of recreational activities, community gatherings and social events over the years. The wide, open space serves as the perfect spot for Red Shield to offer sports and activities to students as well as the general public, providing a low-cost alternative for adults and families who want to lead a healthy lifestyle. “The kids here feel safe — they have a space where they’re being challenged and empowered, in a place where they can just be kids,” said Operations Manager Maria Arellano. “They can utilize it, have fun and be active.” Twice a year kids and teens can register for a six-week basketball clinic where they receive basic instruction in basketball. Teenagers can play pickup basketball from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drop-in basketball for adults is from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Children use a portion of the gym from 5p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Times can also vary. Activities include indoor soccer, kickball, dodgeball, volleyball and relay races. The space is also used for a monthly Family Fun Night, an event on the last Friday of the month when families can come together for a time of fun and laughter. Some of the activities provided are Nerf Gun wars, Family Carnivals, and movie nights. Mass meals are served to community members on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

One of Red Shield’s goals is to provide a supervised, friendly and healthy alternative to students spending days after school on the streets, she added. “A place like this is important because what the streets are offering right now is the total opposite,” Arellano said. “Here, they can get away from that and don’t have to worry about the pressure of somebody trying to peer pressure them into doing something they don’t want to do.
