he Stanislaus County Fair will have a familiar face headlining on the Modelo Variety Free Stage this summer.

Performing on the second day of this year’s Stanislaus County Fair concert series is country singer and Turlock native Ash Ruder, who appeared on Season 19 of American Idol in 2021 and is coming o the release of new music.

Ruder, who released her rst single “ e Valley” this past August, will take the stage for her rst ever headlining performance on July 12. It will also be her rst public performance in her hometown.

“I haven’t been back home since last May. It’s crazy to think that it’s been a year since I was in Turlock, so this will be my rst time back in Turlock since releasing the music. It’ll be my rst experience seeing the response in real time. I’m really excited to see it all and be with everyone, seeing some familiar faces,” Ruder told the Turlock Journal. “Obviously there’s some angst, like some excited nerves about it, but I’ve gotten a lot of love over social media and texts and calls and all that. I know it’ll be so fun and rewarding to go back and share that

Turlock native Ash Ruder, who is coming off the release of new music, will perform at the Stanislaus County Fair on July 12.

love for our hometown together.”

e Valley was released on Aug. 2, 2024, and is described by Ruder as an appreciation for the Central Valley despite her leaving to pursue a career in the music industry. It has garnered almost 20,000 listens across streaming platforms, and led to her being featured on outlets like Country Music Television and Billboard.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ash Ruder to our stage this year,” wsaid fair spokesman Jose Piña in a press release. “As a local artist, Ash’s performance brings an extra sense of pride and connection to our community. We’re excited to showcase her talent and o er fairgoers an incredible night of live music.”

Ruder will be accompanied by a full band for her 1.5-hour set, which will feature unreleased music to be performed on a decorated stage with curated lighting. She will also have exclusive merchandise for sale.

“We’re still brainstorming a lot of stu , but we’re doing our best to make it an experience that you don’t normally experience when you go to a concert. at’s kind of my big next dream, to revolutionize the way a concert is experienced. is

will be the rst taste of that, and Turlock will be my guinea pig for everything that’s going to come because I feel like my town will have a little bit of grace on me,” Ruder joked.

e opportunity to perform at her childhood fair came shortly a er e Valley was released.

“It was a no-brainer,” she said. “Like, of course, I would do this in a heartbeat. It’ll be so special and very, very nostalgic.”

Ruder recounted memories of going to the Stanislaus County Fair as a child and teen, going on rides and attending a number of concerts, including Big Time Rush in 2011, Fi h Harmony in 2014, and Easton Corbin in 2018.

“ e (Stanislaus County) Fair is one of the only places in town where you can go every year to listen to live music and see some bigger names headlining,” Ruder said. “It’s just wild to me that I’m now going to be one of the people on that stage. It feels very surreal and full-circle.”

Ruder said the Fi h Harmony show was especially memorable.

“ at Fi h Harmony show, it was probably one of my rst real concert experiences, because honestly, I didn’t really get to go to concerts growing up  just because my family didn’t have the means to take us into the city and pay for a show. Most of my childhood was like, either watching recordings of concerts on YouTube or going to the fairgrounds.

“ e fairgrounds were my rst concerts and where I saw a lot of my rst acts, and it’s like that for a lot of people. Just thinking that I could be someone’s rst concert is so wild.”

e free nightly concerts in the Modelo Variety Free Stage begin at 8:30 p.m. e shows are open seating and on a space-available basis. ere is no searing or seat-saving before 5 p.m.

ARENA EVENTS PROMISE SPEED, DESTRUCTION AND RODEO ACTION

hile the fair might invoke thoughts of corndogs, funnel cakes, rides, and free concerts for some, thousands of others immediately think of the Food Maxx Arena and the multiple motor sports and rodeo events that have become a Valley tradition.

ere’s an old saying, “if it ain’t broke don’t x it,” and that seems to be the motto when it comes to the events held in the Food Maxx Arena. Back are fan favorites like

the Destruction Derby, I and II, the Truck and Tractor Pulls, Monster Trucks, and the high- ying Motocross and Bloodless Bullghts.

Two nights of tractor pulls will start out arena events on July 11 and 12.

Returning to the FoodMaxx Arena on July 13 will be the wildly popular Portuguese Bloodless Bull ghts.

ose in attendance will be treated to a taste of 18th century Portuguese culture as Cavaleiros (horseman), Matadores and Forcados (suicide squad) battle bulls in the center of the ring, risking injury for the sake

of entertainment, pride and tradition.

Although many individuals in today’s society hold negative views towards bull ghting, the tradition has held strong among the Portuguese community in the Valley. e bloodless sport is a far cry from the Spanish style many are familiar with and is considered to be an art by a cionados and supporters around the world. e Portuguese style of bull ghting is held in two phases, as the horseman battle the bull in the rst phase and the suicide squads enter the ring in the second phase.

FOLLOWING THE BULLFIGHTS WILL BE TWO NIGHTS OF FAIR-FAVORITE, THE DESTRUCTION DERBY.

Injuries are a constant threat and a common occurrence but come with the territory and are expected. Following the bullghts will be two nights of Fair-favorite, the destruction derby, on July 14 and 15, presented by the Turlock Lions Club. Monster Madness will make its way into the

FoodMaxx Arena on July 16 and 17, followed by an ATV Rodeo on July 18 and the AMP Racing Motocross on July 19. e 2025 Stanislaus County Fair arena events will conclude with the Humpz & Hornz Hispanic Rodeo on July 20, featuring dancing horses, escaramuza (synchronized, competitive equestrian sport in the Mexican charrería tradition, involving teams of women riding horses in intricate, choreographed maneuvers) bull riding, and live banda.

“We’re excited to welcome Drake Milligan to the Stanislaus County Fair for what promises to be an incredible performance! We’re proud to continue offering our community world-class entertainment, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience Drake’s performance.” Milligan burst onto the national music stage entering the Billboard Emerging Artists Chart at #5 after dominating iTunes with his debut album, “Dallas/Fort Worth,” charting back-toback #1 hits on the iTunes Country Songs Chart, #1 on iTunes All-Genre Chart and reclaimed the #1 spot on iTunes Country Albums Chart, all while simultaneously

holding positions #1, #2, #3 and #5 on iTunes Country Video Chart. In the UK, Milligan’s debut album spent 11 consecutive weeks in the Top 20 of the Official Country Artists Albums Chart.

A student of classic Country music with the swagger of early Rock ‘n’ Roll, the Fort Worth, Texas native is an electrifying entertainer who cites George Strait and Elvis Presley – the King of Country and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll – as musical heroes, and his unique twist of traditional Country has been embraced by fans, peers and the media alike. Milligan has performed on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” The Grand Ole Opry, Stagecoach and CMA Music Festival, and earned high praise from People, BBC, USA Today, Parade, American Songwriter, CMT. com, Billboard, ET, Access Hollywood, Cosmopolitan, Cowgirl Magazine and Taste of Country.

Following his “Dallas/Fort Worth” debut – named “One of the Best Country Albums of 2022” by Billboard and others – Milligan uncorked a Canadian Country Radio #1 in 2023 (“Honky Tonkin’ About” with The Reklaws) and garnered 5 million views in just a few months with “Cowgirl For Christmas.” His latest EP release titled, “Jukebox Songs,” features four all new tracks and was released in 2024.

The acclaimed “Artist to Watch” (CMT, Pandora, etc.) also returned to his primetime TV roots for a performance on the “America’s Got Talent” spin-off show, “America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League” and hit the road alongside Cody Johnson on his 2024 U.S. arena tour. Currently on his own “2025 Jukebox Songs World Tour,” Milligan will be on the road throughout 2025 opening for Lainey

Wilson, Luke Bryan, and Blake Shelton. Ash Ruder

“We are thrilled to welcome Ash Ruder to our stage this year. As a local artist, Ash’s performance brings an extra sense of pride and connection to our community. We’re excited to showcase her talent and offer fairgoers an incredible night of live music,” said Jose Piña, Fair spokesman.

Post her time competing on ABC’s “American Idol,” Ruder is making waves in the ocean-less city of Nashville, Tennessee. Upon releasing her first single “The Valley,” CMT spotlighted Ruder as the coveted Next Up Now Artist and went on to premiere her dreamy 1970s styled music video with the network.

Her music will take you on a California road trip: the sea salt air, a coastal breeze, sunny and 75 degrees. She’s touch of twang, a whole lot of heart, and gives listeners the chance to see the world through sepia-colored glasses.

Los Nuevos Ilegales

Get ready for an unforgettable night of música as Los Nuevos Ilegales, one of the most dynamic groups emerging from Culiacán, Sinaloa, take the Modelo Variety Free Stage at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds on July 13.

Culiacán’s rising stars bring their signature corridos and regional hits to the Central Valley.

“We’re pumped to have Los Nuevos Ilegales at the fair this year,” said fair spokesperson José Piña. “They’ve got an incredible vibe! We know they’re going to light up the stage and give the crowd a night to remember.”

The Nuevos Ilegales, originally from Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, were formed by Carlos Iván Solís García, the group’s leader and lead vocalist, along with his brother Juan Francisco Solís García, who plays drums.

The two decided to start the band in October 2015, inspired by their shared love of music. It didn’t take long before their corridos and songs could be heard all over Culiacán, even crossing borders and winning over audiences not only in Mexico but also in the United States and throughout Latin America. Hits like “Dicen de Mí,” “Yo Fui el Elegante,” “El Doble R,” “El Tapón,” and many more have contributed to the group’s growing success over the years.

At the end of 2024, after two years as an independent group, they decided to partner with the company Siente Tu Música to return to stages across the United States. The group is made up of four members Carlos Iván Solís García (accordion & lead vocals), Sergio Iván Soto Chávez (bass guitar & vocals), Juan Francisco Solís García (drums), and Víctor Alejandro Vizcarra Sánchez (bajo quinto & vocals).

Their new EP, titled “Vamos Pa’ Delante,” features eight tracks: “Reyna la Falsedad,” “Van Quedando Atrás,” “Nada Que Perder,” “Vamos Pa’ Delante,” ”Aquí Yo Vengo,” “Hoy Estoy Aquí,” “Ahí Les Encargo,” and “El Coyote.”

CONFUNKSHUN

Get ready for an unforgettable night of smooth funk and soulful grooves as the legendary CON-

CONFUNKSHUN

FUNKSHUN takes the stage at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds on the Modelo Variety Free Stage on July 14.

“We’re pleased to bring CONFUNKSHUN to the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds,” said Jose Piña, spokesman of the Stanislaus County Fair. “This concert series is about providing the community with top-tier musical acts, and CONFUNKSHUN’S timeless sound is the perfect addition to our lineup.”

The R&B funk icon, CONFUNKSHUN, who has been pleasing fans for over 50 years, is at it again. While fresh off the success of “Love’s Train” being rerecorded by Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak) and reaching #1 on the charts, the band’s locomotive is once again rolling out with a new single, “Text Me Tomorrow” from the upcoming 2023 summer album release “Smooth Jukebox.” Initially known as Project Soul, the R&B funk icon group we now know as CONFUNKSHUN, has been pleasing fans for over 50 years.

Originating in Vallejo, California, founding member Michael Cooper along with high school classmates, Louis McCall, Karl Fuller, Cedric Martin, Danny Thomas, Paul “Zebulan” Harrell, and newfound talent, Felton Pilate, started this unprecedented music journey. Eventually, the group found a home in Memphis in the mid-‘70s when they booked a performance backing Stax Recording Artist, the Soul Children. Soon they were recruited as the background

band for Rufus Thomas for the Golden Globe nominated Wattstax Benefit Concert/ Documentary. While in pursuit of a recording contract, the group adopted a new name inspired by the group Nite- Liters’ song, CONFUNKSHUN.

The newly re-named act attracted the attention of Mercury Records, and soon set funkateers around the world on fire with their debut album featuring their first single “Sho’ Feels Good To Me.” CONFUNKSHUN went on to release a total of 11 albums, and eight top ten Billboard hits including the No. 1 hit single “Ffun,” “Chase Me,” “Shake & Dance,” “Baby I’m Hooked” and more.

Ironically, their biggest hit was an album cut that was never released as a single. The fan favorite, “Love’s Train,” propelled CONFUNKSHUN’S “To the Max” album to Gold Status. But it was 40 years later that supergroup Silk Sonic’s remake of the single took it to #1 on the charts, helping the duo (Bruno Mars & Anderson Paak) win a BET Album of the Year Award.

In 2022 Michael Cooper and Felton Pilate were presented with Honorary Doctorates of Humane Letters from the Christian Bible Institute. With CONFUNKSHUN member Dr. Ron Moton earning his PH. D in 2018, CONFUNKSHUN can proudly claim to be one of the only R&B Funk bands with three doctorate members. Dr. Cooper and Dr. Pilate were also honored to receive the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awards for their lifetime of service through music and more. This prestigious award has been awarded to a selected few Americans to recognize over 4,000 hours of extraordinary service.

CONFUNKSHUN’S current

lineup includes three original members, Michael Cooper, Felton Pilate, and Karl Fuller as well as the talents of Kurt “KC” Clayton, Ron Moton, Aaron Green, Rene Escovedo, and Brian LaTour. Additional support includes the service of long-time road manager and travel agent Steve Sullivan and Master of Ceremony, Clarence Isadore. They continue to mesmerize audiences with magnetic performances on their worldwide 40-city “Love’s Train Reboarded 40th Anniversary Tour” which included stops at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, Yoshi’s, the Blue Note, and many more sold-out venues. The group is also a frequent favorite on the Soul Train Cruise and Tom Joyner Cruise and soon to be on the upcoming Keith Sweat’s, Sweatfest in the Dominican Republic. Their contribution to R&B music was recognized in 2014 with the National R&B Music Society Lifetime Achievement Award. CONFUNKSHUN’S catalog of hits remains on worldwide radio playlists and in the hearts of their dedicated fans.

Hunter Hayes

Get ready for an unforgettable night at the Stanislaus County Fair when country music sensation Hunter Hayes takes the stage on July 15. Whether you’re a long-time fan or discovering his music for the first time, this is one show you won’t want to miss.

His music brings people together, and we know this performance will be a highlight of the fair.”

Multi-instrumentalist and platinum-selling artist Hayes is an embodiment of the type of musician that embraces change and strives to rewrite the rules. After debuting on the scene with a platinum-certified album, Hayes has charted his own path, moving from his country roots into the genre-bending world that he was destined for. On his album, “Red Sky,” the singer-songwriter is executing at the highest level of his musical career: crafting memorable melodies and instantly catchy hooks albeit with a top-notch musician’s discerning ear. His music is both a reflection of his influences, and a product of his prodigious multi-instrumental talents, reflected by the fact that he plays every instrument on his records.

The Louisiana native has garnered over 2 billion on-demand global streams since the release of his debut album, along with six gold and platinum-certified singles. In addition to his legendary headlining shows, Hayes has also toured with superstars like Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and has headlined sold-out shows across the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia. With over 50 award nominations and wins, including five GRAMMY nominations, Hayes is just getting started.

Jefferson Starship

Legendary rock band Jefferson Starship will headline the Modelo Variety Free Stage on July 16.

With timeless anthems like “Jane,” “Miracles,” and “Find Your Way Back,” Jefferson Starship continues to captivate audiences with high-energy performances that bridge generations. Their dynamic setlist spans all eras of the Jefferson legacy—from Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” to Starship’s chart-topping hit “We Built This City.”

“We’re incredibly excited to welcome such an iconic band to the fair this year,” said Jose Piña, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. Jefferson Starship s music has stood the test of time, and this performance promises to be a highlight of the summer.”

One of the most successful arena rock bands of the ‘70s and ‘80s, Jefferson Starship has earned three platinum and eight gold records, along with numerous Top 40 Billboard singles. In 2025, the band celebrates a rare milestone: 50 years of music and touring, a feat achieved by only a handful of acts in rock history.

Founded in the 1970s, Jefferson Starship emerged as a collective of musical pioneers, contributing to a catalog of rock classics. The current lineup came together in 2012, with several members having joined much earlier. Today’s Jefferson Starship is a true musical family, driven by the same sense of adventure and

Jefferson Starship

unity that fueled their founding.

The band has performed in all 50 U.S. states, on five continents, and in countless countries. A recent tour in New Zealand was among their favorites. Their current lineup includes original member David Freiberg, longtime drummer Donny Baldwin (joined in 1982), keyboardist Chris Smith (since 1998), guitarist Jude Gold (since 2012), and lead vocalist/guitarist Cathy Richardson (joined in 2008 after being discovered by Kantner performing with Big Brother and the Holding Company).

As they celebrate their 50th anniversary, Jefferson Starship honors the legacy of Paul Kantner, who passed away in 2016. His spirit of exploration and boundary-pushing creativity continues to fuel their music.

“To me, that ‘Paul Kantner thing’—getting on a rocket ship and blasting off into the unknown—is the very essence of Jefferson Starship,” said Jude Gold. “And that spirit is very much alive in the band today.”

Taking Back Sunday

Fans can look forward to an unforgettable night of highenergy music from one of the most influential bands of the genre when Taking Back Sunday performs on the Modelo Variety Free Stage on July 17.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Taking Back Sunday to the Stanislaus County Fair this summer,” said Jose Piña, Fair spokesperson. “It’s going to be an amazing show, and we can’t wait for fans to experience the energy and excitement of this legendary band live.”

Taking Back Sunday, who released their eighth studio album “152” in late 2023, often refer to themselves as the ‘luckiest guys you will meet.’

The new album, featuring 10 intensely vulnerable and absorbing new tracks was delivered with fresh ambition and a newfound purpose. It stands among the most genuinely reflective and emotionally pure efforts of Taking Back Sunday’s illustrious career.

Starting out just hoping to release at least one album and go on tour, the band has since sold millions of albums, has multiple tracks with streams hitting the multiple hundred million mark, toured the world several times over, performed at all of the biggest festivals and are still always looking forward.

Taking Back Sunday

Never ones to rest on their prior accomplishments or impressive back catalogue they are always striving to make something that they hope folks can find a little piece of themselves in. “Music is there to bring you together with like-minded people and get a little lost. For us, the songs from 152 have a life and energy all their own. It would make us the happiest if we can all get lost in it together.”

Ozomatli

Get ready to dance and celebrate as the iconic Latin Fusion band Ozomatli comes to the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds, performing live on the Modelo Variety Free Stage on July 18. Fans can expect a high-energy performance that blends Latin, rock, jazz, and funk sounds

into an extraordinary musical experience.

Ozomatli is known for their dynamic sound, blending multiple genres into their unique and energetic performances. They will perform hits like “Saturday Night,” “La Fiesta” and “Cumbia de los Muertos.”

Their lively energy and diverse musical style are a perfect match for our Fair,” said Jose Piña, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair.

If the city of Los Angeles had a soundtrack, it would be Ozomatli. Since their formation in 1995, the six-piece, multi-genre band has been a cultural force, blending Latin, hip-hop, funk, reggae, and global influences into an unmistakable sound that embodies the energy and diversity of LA. In 2025, Ozomatli celebrates an incredible milestone: 30 years of bringing their dynamic, genredefying music to audiences around the world.

Emerging from the politically charged streets of Los Angeles, Ozomatli’s origins are steeped in activism and a desire to unite communities through music. This ethos has carried the band across three decades, earning them a dedicated global following and accolades that include three GRAMMY Awards, four iconic performances at the Hollywood Bowl, a TED Talk, and countless sold-out shows worldwide. From high-profile TV appearances on “The Today Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and “Austin City Limits” to groundbreaking tours in places like Burma and Mongolia, Ozomatli’s music and message transcend borders, languages, and cultures.

The ensemble’s six founding members—Asdru Sierra (vocals, trumpet), Raul Pacheco (vocals, guitars), Uli Bella (saxophone, vocals), Wil-Dog Abers (bass),

Jiro Yamaguchi (percussion), and Justin Poree (vocals, percussion)—have remained true to their mantra: “We take you around the world through the heartbeat of Los Angeles.” Their music is a vibrant collision of styles, drawing from salsa, dancehall, cumbia, samba, funk, merengue, New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga, and Indian raga. This eclecticism is at the heart of their sound, resonating with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

Ozomatli’s legacy extends far beyond their music. Known for their tireless community involvement, the band has used their platform to amplify causes that matter, from immigrant

rights to education and beyond. Their ability to combine socially conscious lyrics with infectious grooves has made them a beacon of unity and resilience, a band that celebrates life while addressing the struggles that connect us all.

Their 30th anniversary is not just a celebration of longevity but also a testament to their enduring relevance and innovation. With a career that began with their groundbreaking 1998 self-titled debut, they continue to evolve and inspire. Whether performing new material or beloved classics, Ozomatli’s live shows remain a jubilant experience, igniting dance floors and uniting communities.

As they embark on their fourth decade, Ozomatli stands as a symbol of Los Angeles’ past,

The Melon Carnival lasted only a few years, and in 1924 the American Legion Rex Ish Post 88 organized a 4th of July celebration for largely the same purpose. In 1925, the American Legion resurrected the name “Turlock Melon Carnival” for the mid-summer festival.

The 4-H and FFA livestock shows were instituted in 1933, and in 1935 the State of California issued a charter that established the 38th District Agriculture Association, which remains today. The “fair” was run jointly by the American Legion post and the agricultural district until 1944 when the American Legion sold the site and buildings to the DAA, which has had the sole responsibility for its operation ever since.

No fairs were held during World War II, although the carnivals and horse pulling events continued in the downtown area. The fair was used as a Relocation Center for Japanese

hildren of all ages dressed up and marched down Main Street in the Kiddie Kaper Parade, while later on the same kids tried their luck in the melon rolling race as parents lined up for a cantaloupe eating contest. Were these scenes from Turlock’s inaugural Melon Carnival in 1911? No, they were activities that highlighted the Turlock Melon Carnival’s triumphant return in September 2024.

And, according to event organizer Lori Smith, the fun will return for a second year this upcoming Sept. 20 and 21.

“There was so much joy seeing people having fun doing things like melon eating and watermelon rolling,” said Smith, who said the Kiddie Kaper Parade and melon eating contest were the most popular events at the 2024 carnival. “The public got a taste for it and hopeful it will be bigger and better this year.”

hopes of promoting and marketing the local melon industry and melon shipping businesses. It was an immediate hit with community members and visitors, drawing an estimated 5,000 people. A second carnival was held in 1912, drawing 10,000. In the ensuing years, the carnival was held intermittently until 1925. By 1956, it had transformed into what we know today as the Stanislaus County Fair.  Although the fair continues to be a premier event for the city, drawing tourists and being a major economic driver, the Turlock Historical Society & Museum and countless downtown business owners wanted to turn back the clock.

Activities and events similar to the ones held more than a century ago once again took over the streets of downtown Turlock in September 2024, including melon rolling and the Miss Melon Pageant.

Much like the original Miss Melon Carnival pageants, there were both youth and adult Miss Melons crowned on the downtown stage in 2024. A panel of four judges scored contestants ages five through nine for the title of Little Miss Melon, contestants ages 10 to 14 years for Junior Miss Melon, ages 15 to 21 for Miss Melon, ages 22 through 40 for Ms. Melon and ages 41 and over for the title of Mature Ms. Melon.
