SPECIAL OLYMPICS OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA Police officers throughout Stanislaus County put on their running shoes in June to run about three miles throughout Ceres for a good cause – Special Olympics of Northern California. Special Olympics is designed to support and encourage intellectually disabled persons. The Ceres run took place just days before the 2025 Summer Games at Santa Clara University.

PATRIOTIC PRIDE Main Street in Gustine came alive with star-spangled spirit this Fourth of July as hundreds of families lined the sidewalks for the city’s annual Independence Day Parade. With American flags waving, music echoing down the blocks, and children scrambling for candy, the parade was a perfect display of community pride, creativity, and tradition.

STANISLAUS COUNTY FAIR Families, friends, and fairgoers from across the Central Valley flocked to the Stanislaus County Fair in Turlock, soaking up the summer sun and diving into classic fair fun. From spinning carnival rides and live music to deepfried treats and prize-winning livestock, the fairgrounds were buzzing with energy and laughter.

SUTTER CREEK RAGTIME FESTIVAL

The Historic Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival celebrates its 27th year August 8–10, bringing Ragtime, Boogie Woogie, Stride, and Early Jazz to Main Street in Sutter Creek. The three-day event features top performers from across the country, including Frederick Hodges, Carl Sonny Leyland, Paul Orsi, Danny Coots, and Guinness World Record holder Squeek Steele. Ensemble acts include the Pacific Coast Ragtime Orchestra and the Amador Clarinet Quartet.

Festival highlights include silent movies with live piano, jam sessions, duets, and a Youth Concert featuring ten rising pianists. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to standout youth performers.

FULL MOON SOUND BATH

Appellation Lodi’s Wine & Roses Resort & Spa will host a Full Moon Sound Bath on Sunday, August 9 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the resort’s pool area. This 90-minute outdoor experience invites participants to relax and realign under the energy of the full moon through guided sound therapy.

Open to all experience levels, the session includes emotional cleansing and energetic renewal in a tranquil setting. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle, yoga mat, blanket, or pillow for added comfort. Yoga mats and water will be provided.

Guests should arrive by 6:45 p.m. and check in at Guest Registration for directions to the pool.

Music begins Friday at 4 p.m. and continues through Sunday afternoon across five downtown venues. The City Hall Auditorium serves as festival headquarters, with badges and merchandise available throughout the weekend.

MODSTOCK MUSIC FESTIVAL

Modesto’s beloved Modstock Music Festival is back for its 15th annual celebration, bringing a full day of live music and community spirit to Graceada Park on Saturday, August 10. From 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., festivalgoers can enjoy performances from over 100 bands, including headliners Triple D, Flying Blind, and Aware.

The lineup also features a wide range of local and regional talent such as Bangarang, The Vibes, Western Bound, Remedy GSG, and many more. With music spanning genres and generations, Modstock offers something for every listener.

Admission is free, and all ages are welcome.

CLASSIC C10 TRUCK SHOW

Truck enthusiasts and community members alike are invited to the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds & Event Center in Turlock on Saturday, August 16 for an afternoon of vintage charm and lively entertainment. Beginning at 3 p.m., the event will showcase a stunning lineup of classic C10 trucks, accompanied by a variety of food trucks, local vendors, and live music.

The gathering offers a familyfriendly atmosphere with something for everyone— whether you’re admiring restored pickups, sampling street food, or browsing handcrafted goods. Admission is free, and all ages are welcome.

CALIFORNIA HIGHLAND GAMES STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Amador Scottish Games will host the California Highland Games State Championship on Saturday, August 16, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Amador County Fairgrounds. Open to competitors aged 18 and older, the event features separate classes for men and women, welcoming both seasoned athletes and beginners.

Participants are required to wear kilts, and gyms or specialty groups are encouraged to register.

No prior experience is necessary, and local practice opportunities are available through the Gold Country Throwers on Facebook.

STOCKTON LABOR DAY POW WOW

The University of the Pacific El Centro and the Stockton Pow Wow Committee will host the Annual Stockton Labor Day Pow Wow on August 30–31 at the Wendell Phillips Center Lawn. This free, family-friendly event invites the public to experience the vibrant traditions of Indigenous peoples from across California and the western United States.

Since 1981, the Pow Wow has brought together tribes to share songs, dances, drums, arts, crafts, and Native cuisine.

Attendees can enjoy buffalo burgers, Indian hotdogs wrapped in frybread, Native American tacos, and more.

Dozens of vendors will offer handmade jewelry, clothing, artwork, and cultural items.

The celebration runs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Alcohol, drugs, outside sales, and raffles are prohibited.

STOCKTON’S GREEK FOOD FESTIVAL

St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church invites the community to celebrate the 66th Annual Greek Food Festival, taking place September 5–7 at 920 W. March Lane in Stockton. The three-day event promises authentic Greek cuisine, lively music, traditional dancing, and fun for all ages.

Festival hours are noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5, with free entry for children 11 and under when accompanied by an adult.

MODESTO SYMPHONY TO PRESENT “PICNIC AT THE POPS!”

The Modesto Symphony Orchestra will host its annual Picnic at the Pops! concert on Saturday, September 6 at 7:30 p.m., set outdoors on the scenic GALLO grounds at 600 Yosemite Boulevard in Modesto.

This year’s performance is a highenergy symphonic tribute to the legendary music of Queen, featuring guest vocalist Brody Dolyniuk and conducted by MSO Principal Pops Conductor Ryan Murray.

The family-friendly event draws thousands of attendees from across the region for an evening of music, dancing, and community under the stars. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and picnic baskets,

though food will also be available for purchase from local vendors including Greens on Tenth, The Sinaloense Food Truck, and Yogurt Mill’s Froyo Truck. General Lawn tickets start at $45 for adults and $12 for youth under 17. Reserved Lawn seating begins at $75 for adults and $20 for youth. Group discounts are available.

Homegrown

C

entral Valley native Karen Warner has always been driven to make a difference. The Oakdale native is currently making waves in the bioeconomy landscape as CEO of Beam Circular.

Beam Circular, based in Modesto, acts as a coordinating hub for regional and national bioeconomy projects. The nonprofit collaborates with regional community colleges, universities, economic development organizations, bio-based companies, startups, large manufacturers, community partners, and investors.

Warner, a 2006 Oakdale High School graduate, earned her undergraduate degree in Human Biology from Stanford University in 2010. After graduation, she moved to New York to help build the non-profit Global Health Corps, which led to a role at Emerson Collective, a social change organization founded by Laurene Powell Jobs. At Emerson, Warner focused on education, immigration reform, and health.

In 2015, Warner began her graduate studies, spending a year and a half at Stanford for her MBA and another year and a half at Harvard for her MPA (Masters in Public Administration). In 2018, Warner returned to the Central Valley and volunteered for Josh Harder’s Congressional campaign.

team with Harder’s Chief of Staff in Washington, D.C. “It was amazing to come back to the Valley. In a legislative office, you interact with a cross-section of the community—meeting with the Farm Bureau, the water district, hospitals, local churches, and the teachers union. It was a fascinating way to be reintroduced to the region,” Warner said.

In 2019, after the birth of her son and later her daughter in 2022, Warner began to focus on the future.

“I’ve always been interested in growing the economy here in a way that benefits both people and the planet. With climate change impacting us, we need to adapt and create solutions that foster community and steward resources for future generations.”

Warner’s interest deepened as she worked on the Stanislaus 2030 planning process—a public-private initiative aimed at creating a strategic investment plan for the county. The research unveiled a growing bioeconomy and the potential to transform local waste into new products, sparking Warner’s interest.

“One of the key recommendations from the Stanislaus 2030 report was developing a circular bioeconomy by converting biomass into bio-based products. That’s how Beam Circular was born,” Warner explained.

leaders in investing in circular product development. “Other industries may be newer to this focus,” Warner said.

One of Warner’s proudest achievements is Beam Circular’s accelerator program, which offers entrepreneurs deep support, funding, advising, and mentoring. The first cohort, launched in February, received 102 global applications and selected six entrepreneurs, including the founder of Fit Candy, a Turlock company creating candy from watermelon rinds.

Most recently, Beam Circular secured $9.8 million in funding to build the California Bioeconomy Innovation Campus. This facility will help scale technologies that convert agricultural byproducts, food waste, and forestry residues into renewable energy, sustainable materials, and other valuable products.

“The campus will offer shared facilities for entrepreneurs, support workforce training, and de-risk technologies that unlock new industry opportunities,” Warner said. “This is a major step forward for California’s leadership in the bioeconomy.”

Warner’s work reflects her belief that the community is building the infrastructure to turn waste into opportunity, creating green jobs while protecting the environment.

Lodi Grape Festival

F

or more than eight decades, the Lodi Grape Festival has been a beloved tradition in California’s Central Valley—an annual celebration of harvest, community, and creativity. From September 11–14, 2025, the festival returns with four days of nonstop fun, flavor, and entertainment at the Lodi Grape Festival Grounds.

What began as a modest food gathering in downtown Lodi has grown into a full-scale event that draws thousands each year. Today, the festival features everything from grape and commodity murals to competitive exhibits, carnival rides, wine tasting, and a vibrant lineup of live music. It’s a place where agriculture meets artistry, and where families, friends, and visitors come together to toast the region’s rich viticultural heritage.

Each day offers something special. Thursday kicks off with Family Value Day, where guests 16 and under get in free all day long. Friday’s Free ’til 5 promotion lets everyone enjoy the festival at no cost from noon to 5 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, early birds can bring two cans of food and gain entry for just $2 between noon and 2 p.m. — a great way to give back while enjoying the festivities.

The entertainment lineup is stacked with crowd-pleasers.

Fleetwood Mask, the acclaimed Fleetwood Mac tribute band, opens the festival at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night. Country star Tyler Rich takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, followed by pop-rock favorites We the Kings at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Sunday wraps up with Latin music legends Industria Del Amor, performing at 6 p.m. All concerts are

held on the Michelob Ultra Stage and are included with admission.

Beyond the music, guests can explore art, photography, quilts, and floriculture displays, or visit the petting zoo for hands-on fun. The grape and commodity murals— crafted with real agricultural products—remain a signature attraction, showcasing the creativity and pride of the local community.

Admission is $12 for adults (ages 13 and up), $8 for youth (ages 6–12), and free for children 5 and under. Parking is $12 and must be paid by credit or debit card—cash is not accepted in official lots.

Ultimately, “Dial M for Murder” endures because it delivers: mystery, clarity and justice, rare comforts in chaotic times. “It’s comfort food with surprises,” Hatcher says. “A good thriller brings relief and release. residents are likely aware of the downtown Modesto arts and entertainment treasure, the Gallo Center for the Arts. Less well known may be the treasure within the treasure: the Gallo Center Repertory Company (GCRC), the Gallo Center’s in-house produced theater operation. It is a rarity in the world of the performing arts, in which presenting organizations similar to the Gallo Center do not typically produce performances of their own.

Founded 15 years ago with the mission to entertain, inspire, and educate, GCRC brings high-quality, locally cast productions to life in the Foster Family Theater— a beautifully intimate 440-seat space. Each season showcases a thoughtfully curated lineup of plays and musicals that blend popular titles with artistic ambition. From beloved classics to contemporary favorites, GCRC performances reflect the vibrancy and diversity of the Central Valley community.

The GCRC’s 2025/26 season is full of mystery and intrigue. The season begins with a new stage adaptation of the classic mystery that inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film, “Dial M for Murder,” starring Grace Kelly and Ray Milland.

Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of “Dial M for Murder” breathes new life into a classic thriller. Barry Edelstein, Artistic Director of The Old Globe in San Diego, where the play premiered in 2021, proposed a fresh take that centered the female perspective. Hatcher’s response was to elevate Margot, the play’s would-be victim, from passive to powerful.

“In the original, Margot sits in the back,” Hatcher says. “I wanted to put her in the driver’s seat.” By reimagining her as an active participant in her fate, Hatcher reshapes the narrative without disrupting its core suspense. Hatcher also reimagined Max, the American love interest, as Maxine—a bold, funny foil to Margot’s refined world. This fresh energy modern-

U2’s legacy comes alive in Newman with a high-voltage tribute performance at West Side Theatre

ewman’s West Side Theatre is about to echo with the soaring soundscapes and emotional power of U2, as Blood Red Sky brings their acclaimed tribute performance to town. With a reputation for capturing the spirit and sonic brilliance of the legendary Irish band, Blood Red Sky offers audiences a chance to relive U2’s greatest moments—from their raw, rebellious beginnings to their polished, stadium-filling anthems.

The band’s setlist spans U2’s entire career, but with a special emphasis on the band’s iconic 1983 Red Rocks performance—a rainsoaked, high-voltage show that helped cement U2’s place in rock history. Blood Red Sky recreates that youthful hunger and urgency, performing hits like “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “New Year’s Day,” “Where the Streets Have No Name,” and “Beautiful Day,” along with select tracks from art legacy.

At the heart of the band is lead vocalist Jerry Pompei, whose commanding stage presence and vocal depth bring Bono’s lyrics to life. A veteran of Sacramento’s music scene, Jerry’s career includes stints with Tight Quarters, Secret Service, and Numonix, where he shared stages with acts like Tower of Power, Romeo Void, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His passion for performance is unmistakable. “I play every gig like it’s my last,” he says.

Guitarist Kurt Spataro, portraying The Edge, delivers the shimmering tones and rhythmic textures that define U2’s sound. A lifelong musician and renowned chef, Kurt’s travels through Europe and South America have shaped his musical style. Kurt and Jerry’s musical partnership dates back to their time in Secret Service, and their chemistry continues to shine on stage.

Inspired by his father’s musical legacy, Robert found his groove in Numonix and now performs alongside Kurt and Kitty O’Neal in the indie-alt band Skyler’s Pool. His bass work in Blood Red Sky is both faithful and dynamic.

On drums is Gary Huntzinger, who channels Larry Mullen Jr. with precision and heart. A lifelong U2 fan who grew up in England, Gary has seen the band live more than any other and was present at the infamous Oakland Coliseum show where sculptor Armand Vaillancourt painted graffiti on stage. His drumming is shaped by legends like Bonham, Copeland, and Fleetwood, and his connection to U2’s music runs deep.

Trendy, ‘superfood café’ Vitality Bowls opens in Turlock

A

s the Geer Gardens shopping center in Turlock undergoes renovations, one space has reopened with new tenants, who are hoping to provide community members with healthier food and drink options.

Those folks are Tianna and Lizandro Barragan, and this weekend, they are approaching one month of operation of Vitality Bowls at 2585 Geer Road. It is the 31st location in the state, coming 14 years after the company was founded

“It’s been great so far,” said Tianna.

“People seem to really enjoy what we have to offer and are excited to try a bit of everything we have on the menu.”

The menu at Vitality Bowls is vast, but as the name says, it’s all about the bowls, specifically açaí bowls, which are popular dishes with açaí berries small,

Turlock needed healthier options, so we made that dream a reality. purple fruits produced by the açaí palm trees that native to Central and South America and a known antioxidant. In bowls, they are often mixed with other fruits and toppings like granola, nuts and seeds.

Tianna and Lizandro were introduced to the “super food” in Florida, as each pursued masters degrees at the University of Tampa. They “fell in love” with the bowls, and when they moved back home to the Central Valley, they were ecstatic to discover the Vitality Bowls location in Manteca.

Over a year ago, as aspiring entrepreneurs, they just happened to stop by the Manteca store when they noticed a sign saying that franchising was available. They jumped at the opportunity.

“It was just perfect at the time for us to come across that,” Tianna said. “We are first-time entrepreneurs, and we were brainstorming ideas, mainly thinking about an ice cream shop. But we discussed this and filled out the paperwork, they reached on a week later and it got the ball rolling.”

Lizandro is from Patterson and Tianna is originally from the Southern California town of Monrovia, but they have grown to love Turlock.

So when a location was being discussed, it was a no-brainer.

“We thought this was a really good community to bring it into,” Tianna said. “We saw that Turlock was kind of lacking healthy food options, and we know that a lot of people now are very health conscious. Being so close to the

university (Stanislaus State), too, was a plus because students are a big target. When we were in college, we were always looking for places to hang out, study, and also eat healthy, which isn’t easy in college. We want to offer all of that.”

It’s evident in the remodeling job.

The inside of the space, which is 1,980 square-feet and was home to Majesty Bible and Gifts for nearly a decade, is almost unrecognizable.

As soon as you walk in, you are met at the register with the backdrop of their massive menu and a newly constructed kitchen, where the magic happens.

Oe of the most popular orders have been, of course, the bowls, specifically the Dragon Bowl, which features a base of pitaya, banana, pineapple, raspberries, coconut milk and mango peach juice with toppings of strawberries, kiwi, almonds, organic goji berries, bee pollen and honey.

The kitchen is complemented with a full allergy kit to accommodate customers.

“We take allergies very seriously here, so if somebody does come in and have allergies, we do have an allergy kit where we use everything from that to create the food.

“We use all the backup food to make sure that none of that food has been cross contaminated with the other food. We always make sure that that’s the number one priority, keeping the kitchen clean, keeping utensils where they need to if we’re working with an allergy,” Tianna said.

As far as drinks go, an early hit has been the pina colada smoothie, which contains organic coconut blend with banana, mango, pineapple, mango peach juice and coconut milk.

There have also been steady orders of paninis and wraps, specifically the Vitality Wrap and the Chimichurri Steak Wrap. The Vitality Wrap has a tomato basil tortilla, hummus, avocado, super greens, grains, roasted potato, radish, pickled red onion, lemon tahini vinaigrette, garlic aioli and superseed crunch. The Chimichurri Steak Wrap is similar with the tomato basil tortilla, grass-fed sous-vide steak, super greens, grains, roasted tomato, chimichurri, garlic aioli and sunflower seeds.

The space has regular tables and chairs, couch chairs, a bar area, and a kid’s zone. There are also plans to build a wall near the back of the space to create a study room for students or companies to utilize.

“We’re really happy with how it turned out and some of the ideas we have to make this space better,” Tianna said. “And of course, to welcome in the community and promote health and wellness. That’s the top priority.” ●

Lucca Winery

I

t’s Friday evening at Lucca Winery, and that means one thing—pizza night. This monthly gathering is a favorite among club members of the Ripon-based winery, nestled at 16265 E. River Road.

Owner Mark Lucchesi shared that Lucca wines were originally crafted for family enjoyment only. The Lucchesi family farm, rich with history, once produced a variety of fruits and vegetables on the same land where the winery now thrives.

The roots of this legacy stretch back to Dionisio Lucchesi, who immigrated from Italy generations ago. He settled in Oakley, a small farming town in the Delta region of California’s Central Valley, eventually purchasing land just outside Ripon along O’Hara Avenue.

Dionisio’s love for farming was passed down to his son, Guido, who nurtured the land by cultivating trees, vines, and working the sandy soil. Though Guido had no formal

training in winemaking, he began producing wine from his zinfandel grapes—sharing his homemade vino with family and friends.

The winery began to take shape in 1990 when Alan Lucchesi took over stewardship of the farm, expanding operations to over 400 acres of vines.

He shared his Oakley-harvested grapes with his brother Mark, who was then farming almonds and peaches. Mark began experimenting with small batches of wine, and as his passion grew, so did his production.

That journey led to the founding of Lucca Winery in 2011—a tribute to the family’s dedication to craft and community.

The tasting room, located on the family farm, is open Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Club members—who can sign up onsite—receive discounts on multibottle purchases and invitations to exclusive events, including twiceyearly release parties.

CHERRY OVERNIGHT OATS

Recipe courtesy of Northwest Cherry Growers 2 cups rolled oats 4 tablespoons chia seeds 1 1/2 cups milk 2 teaspoons pure almond extract 4 tablespoons pure maple syrup 1/2 cup Northwest Cherries, roughly chopped, plus additional for serving (optional) Greek yogurt (optional) sliced almonds (optional)

DIRECTIONS In mixing bowl, stir oats and chia seeds to combine.

Add milk, almond extract and maple syrup.

Stir to combine until uniformly mixed.

Using 1/4 cup measuring cup, divide oats mixture among four small jars, adding layer of cherries between scoops. Top with remaining cherries.

Seal jars and transfer to refrigerator overnight, or at least 6 hours, before serving.

Serve on their own or top with Greek yogurt, additional dried cherries and sliced almonds, if desired.

DIRECTIONS In small food processor or spice grinder, pulse freeze-dried strawberries until finely ground. Place popped popcorn in large bowl. Drizzle melted chocolate over top; toss until well coated. Sprinkle evenly with ground freeze-dried strawberries; toss until well coated.

Scrape onto large parchment paper-lined baking sheet, spreading into even layer.

Let stand at room temperature 30-60 minutes, or until chocolate is set and hardened. To serve, break into pieces.

MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN MAKES MAGIC MEMORIES

Lakes Basin Overview reveals scenic lakes and peaks of Inyo National Forest.

M

ammoth Mountain attracts thousands of skiers in winter and mountain bikers in summer. Not everyone knows that it also offers a novel hike. After an enjoyable trek through the woods near the mountain’s base and up its western ridge, hikers can visit a summit station with interesting exhibits, eat at its cafe and descend on the ski area’s gondola for free.

This hike is four miles one way with gondola descent, taking three hours, or eight miles round trip without it, taking five to six hours. The trailhead elevation is 8,921 feet, and the hike climbs 2,132 feet to a 11,053foot summit.

Park near Mammoth Lakes Ski Area or, to avoid traffic and parking issues, take a free bus from town. Mammoth Mountain Trail (also known as St. Anton Trail) begins on the south side of Highway 203 just west of Mammoth’s Adventure Center and gondola station.

Look for short brown signposts reading “Mammoth Mountain Hiking Trail” at trail junctions throughout the ascent and follow them carefully to avoid cycling trails and mountain bikers.

Our path begins in a forest of lodgepole pines, whitebark pines and mountain hemlocks. In fact, a set of interpretive signs at the beginning of the trail helps hikers to identify them. The route circles around the

mountain’s base in a counterclockwise direction as it gains elevation. After passing above Reds Lake, the trail climbs onto Mammoth’s western ridge and above the tree line. Just before the summit, we reach Lakes Basin Overlook, which deserves a stop to enjoy the southeastern view of Inyo National Forest’s many lakes and peaks.

Then it’s just a few hundred yards to the signed summit and Eleven53 Interpretive Center. This summit station not only commands an outstanding view of the Minarets, Mount Ritter, Banner Peak and Devils Postpile National Monument, but also offers a variety of exhibits on local geology, wildlife and culture. There’s even a small restaurant.

Why not indulge in a hot lunch and a cold beer on this summit before returning effortlessly on the gondola. The center and gondola close at 4:30 p.m. daily in summer and fall, or sometimes

earlier during dangerous weather such as lightning.

Volcanic eruptions formed this lava dome complex. Mono Indians occupied the area until four miners staked a claim on Mineral Hill in 1877, forming Mammoth Mining Company the next year. Ski enthusiast Dave McCoy set up the first rope tow on the mountain in 1942. He got a Forest Service permit to develop a ski area in 1953, built a small lodge and added a used chair lift.

A popular skiers’ destination in winter, Mammoth Mountain invites hikers and cyclists in summer and fall.

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area was born, which led to the growth of Mammoth Lakes, a popular resort town; both take their name from the short-lived mining company.

Mountain bikers use the gondola to ride down this mountain in summer, though cyclists are not allowed to ride uphill to the summit. Mammoth requires all cyclists to buy trail passes even if they do not use the gondola.

An alternative trail leads

from Twin Lakes to the summit on the Twin Lakes Trail along the mountain’s western Dragons Back ridge.

At around three miles each way, this path is slightly shorter than Mammoth Mountain Trail, but climbs around 250 feet more and does not offer a gondola descent to your starting point.

An excellent spot for pictures of Mammoth Mountain as well as the Minarets is found at Minaret Vista, a few miles west of the ski area. ●

T

enaya Lake offers not just respite from the valley heat but it is also an easy-to-access slice of the quintessential high Sierra lake experience.

Unlike almost all of the 2,000 plus other lakes of glacial origins scattered along the 430-mile Sierra range, it does not require hiking mile upon mile to reach.

You can literally drive to its very edge on Highway 120.

Well, OK, not exactly.

That’s because the section of Highway 120 that passes through Yosemite National Park is technically not part of the state highway system.

It’s known as Tioga Road between the Crane Flat and Tioga Pass park entrance stations.

But it is still the same contiguous ribbon of pavement that runs through much of our area.

So why Tenaya Lake, besides it being the most accessible and largest lake in the Yosemite front country?

It has sandy beaches.

It is 114 feet deep with crystal blue waters.

The snow melt that fills the lake makes swimming a cool treat.

You can take in the majestic setting on paddle boards, kayaks, or canoes. No motorized boats are allowed.

The shores are ideal for picnics or simply an afternoon of R&R. You can hike a 2.5-mile loop trail

around the lake with no elevation gain.

And it also serves as a spectacular starting and ending point for hikes through the back country to Cathedral Lakes, Half Dome and my favorite vista above Yosemite Valley — Cloud’s Rest.

An argument can be made that Tenaya Lake — named for the last chief of the Yosemite Indians — is the most beautiful lake within the 1,169 square miles of the national park.

It is flanked by granite peaks and domes on three sides.

The letdown from being a true blue Sierra glacial lake setting is the fact Tioga Road (Highway 120) runs along its northern edge.

Most can easily overlook that given it is the reason you don’t have to hike six miles round trip or backpack to access it.

The lake is at 8,149 feet. That means on a 100-degree day in the valley, the temperature there won’t peak much above 80 degrees.

All of that combines to make Tenaya Lake arguably the best place to worship the sun in the 209 without being roasted like a Costco rotisserie chicken on most summer days.

And it you want to try and channel Ansel Adams with your smartphone, this is a good place to do it.

opposite side of the image and dropping it in the endangered species known as a mailbox that people over 60 used before the advent of Instagram — head to the west end of the lake.

There the view across the lake takes in soaring granite promontories that surround the 1.6-mile long Tenaya Lake.

The full loop hike is worth it.

In the spirit of full disclosure, besides walking along Tioga Road on the west side, it has a few inconveniences such as wading across both the inlet and outlet.

Take a break from hiking six miles and drive right up to Tenaya Lake—it’s the only place where you can chill at 8,149 feet and still keep your cool It also requires a dab or two of Deet to fend off the mosquitoes at various times of the day.

The CliffsNotes “hike” for the best views with the least effort and just a few minutes of time, park near the western edge of the lake and then walk south along the shore there until you reach the lake’s outlet.

Now for a bit of interesting geology and such that includes a relevant bit of information about climate change.

You didn’t think this was just going to be a trip devoid of relevance, did you?

There are a few tree stumps that poke up from Tenaya Lake that tend to get overlooked.

The lodgepole pine remnants are between 600 and 1,000 years of age.

Why that is relevant is thanks to scientists who dabble in dendroecology, the study of tree rungs using radio carbon dating technology.

Tree ring growth is directly tied to the moisture a tree takes in during a given year.

The ages of the Tenaya Lake tree stumps overlap generally with the Medieval Warm Period.

That’s when rising temperatures across the Atlantic led to settlers in Greenland, to plant vineyards in Britain, and increased the food supply that enabled a doubling of Europe’s population.

Here in what today is known as the Southwest United States that includes most

of California, the times weren’t so much fun.

During the same time frame there were two periods of extended drought — punctured by a year or two of above normal or average precipitation — that lasts more than a century apiece.

Lodgepole pines were growing where what is now the last upper 25 to 60 feet of Tenaya Lake that was dry ground back then.

Toss in the fact Tenaya Lake — as well as Half Dome and Yosemite Valley itself — was carved by glaciers and it is clear climate change per se has been around a long time and is clearly driven more so by the forces of nature than anything else.

And now for a bit of “bookkeeping”, so to speak.

Tioga Road is open into the Yosemite high country after being cleared of snow and roads mostly repaired.

It makes it an ideal time to make the roughly three-hour drive from the 209 to bask in the Sierra high country.

If you want to make a longer day of it, Yosemite’s version of an alpine heaven awaits just 12 minutes farther up the road some seven miles to the east in the form of Tuolumne Meadows.

Access to Yosemite National Park requires a $35 pass per vehicle that is good for seven days.

It goes without saying the window to visit Tenaya Lake is narrow.

Access on anything but foot or backcountry skis ends when the snow returns usually in November.

Also, it should be noted after mid-October, no overnight parking is allowed at Tenaya Lake for those using it as a jumping off point for backcountry hikes.

For a bit of a nature walk, take in the sights along the 2.5-mile loop trail around Tenaya Lake. ●

Vanity + body fat = A heart pumping lesson in how we are perceived & how we see ourselves By DENNIS WYATT

S

omewhere buried deep in the archives of the University of California at Davis is an obscure health research paper.

Among the subjects is one 32 year-old, 5-foot-11, 190-pound Caucasian male.

The topic of the research?

The impacts of sudden stress from exercising on the heart of people who are wellconditioned.

How I got picked for it is a bit telling about vanity — mine, but particularly others that turned down a request to participate.

It also made me realize looks — and perceptions — can be shallow.

And it also gave me a stinging lesson in not being full of myself.

This was back in the day before Sutter Hospitals absorbed Roseville Community Hospital.

A medical technician working at the hospital was involved in a UC Davis research project.

It required him to secure eight healthy males between the ages of 25 and 40.

The participants — after

going through an extensive physical — had to participate in eight weekly sessions on a Stairmaster set at a very strenuous level.

It required five minutes of actual exercise.

The kicker was that it had to be at full-bore from start to finish. No stretching. No warm-up. Just go from 0 to as hard as you could go for 300 seconds.

The hospital’s community relations director contacted me.

I asked the obvious question. Why me?

She said it was because I was into long distance cycling, was the right age, and appeared to be fit.

Without missing a beat, I noted the hospital staff had more than ample adult males that I knew who were into everything from marathon runners to elite cyclists who could leave me in the dust without breathing hard.

So, I asked again, why me?

She shared the real reason they were struggling to find eight guys. The research required participants to be

shaved.

There were eight spots on the upper body that would be attached to monitoring devices.

Apparently there are males, especially in the middle of summer, that are hairy enough and have an aversion to having eight patches on their chests and back shaved.

It wasn’t an issue for me even though I’m half serious when I joke I’m the missing link.

I happened to have a multitude of reasons why I won’t go around shirtless.

I don’t want to be responsible for blinding pilots and crashing planes.

And, more important my body type — being endomorphic doesn’t tend to be muscular.

Compound that with having just two years previously dropped 150 pounds and I’m lucky if I’m able to ever brag about having a one-pack.

So why did I do it?

It came with a full-scale heart stress test.

Before I stepped on the treadmill, I was told the test would probably take 8 or so minutes as they gradually needed to get my heart rate up to a certain level for a minute, doing

so at a constant speed while increasing the incline.

I made two observations. I tended to sweat a lot when I get up to my target heart rate. And the other was that it might take me longer to get there than a few minutes.

The tech smiled and said something along the lines that he doubted that.

At the time I was logging more than 10,000 miles a year bicycling.

In my wildest dreams, I’d never be a competitive road racer.

I’m not an animal. I’m a plodder.

As such, I recovered quickly.

When I went on week-long fullyloaded bicycling trips averaging 75 to 110 miles a day, I could keep going day in and day out while those that were accompanying me and almost half my age that were fairly decent high school athletes were biting the dust after four days.

Did I mention all of the trips involved crisscrossing Sierra mountain passes?

Long story short, the test took 20 minutes.

The tech had to take the incline up to the max.

An given he was standing next to me monitoring equipment and making notes on a clipboard, he had to not once but three times hand me a paper towel so I could try to stop my sweat from splattering his papers.

Afterwards, he noted he didn’t size me up as someone who was in that good of shape.

If it gave me a bubble of smugness, it was quickly popped with the next segment that I was dreading.

I was sent into a room for a body fat test. Given the hospital didn’t have a water tank — more about that in a few — it would be done with calipers.

There were no less than a dozen places I was going to get pinched.

He started with my lower legs,

reading off low one-digit numbers.

It stayed that way until he crossed the Rubicon.

He took a reading at my waist.

Then he looked at his calipers as if something was wrong. And then he did another pinch.

The only exact words I remember from that day of being prodded and tested were ones that mortified me but also gave me a sense of accomplishment: “Twenty-eight percent.

In addition to bicycling every day no less than 15 miles, I also hit Jazzercise classes three to five times a week.

You must be a cyclist.”

Yes, I had clearly defined calf muscles that looked like inverted hearts. Frank Fiore of Center Appliance, who is Manteca’s undisputed bicycling guru, can tell you that it comes from a lot of pedaling.

I cheated, though.

In addition to bicycling every day no less than 15 miles, I also hit Jazzercise classes three to five times a week. I’d even bicycle 36 miles round trip on Saturdays to a Jazzercise class or combine them on the way home on days I could bicycle to The PressTribune, which was a 28-mile round trip.

Did I mention I didn’t have a life

back then?

Jazzercise, by the way, ties into the fat test in a big way.

I spent a bit of time talking with the tech about body fat.

He offered to arrange for me to take a body fat water immersion test at Sacramento State for a reduced fee.

I jumped at the chance.

Three weeks later and $100 lighter, I was elated to be told I was 17 percent body fat.

That number clearly is in the rearview mirror today, but at the time it was almost on the cusp of being considered the ideal upper range for cyclists that were considered athletic.

I was so full of myself, I made it a point to get to Jazzercise early the next day and brag about it to Donna Shaw, the instructor.

Donna got me hooked on Jazzercise telling me — and rightfully so — it is one of the greatest cardio conditioning programs out there.

Imagine how my ego dive bombed as I walked into the hall in Roseville where she conducted the class and overheard her sharing with another student how her body fat test results from an immersion test she had taken came in at 8 percent.

I didn’t say a word.

Donna, besides being the top aerobics instructor I’ve ever had to the point she got me to be part of a demonstration team, had gotten seriously into body building six months prior.

In retrospect, I had nothing to be ashamed of given less than three years earlier when I weighed 320 pounds I‘m sure my body fat percentage was off the chart.

It’s human, though, to measure yourself against others and not yourself.

Once you get past that. You can concentrate on stuff that really matters. ●

ward-winning designer Wendy Glaister always gives every client and project her best, but a recent remodel in Modesto’s Copper Creek neighborhood had a special place in her heart.

“She built the home a long time ago, and her son and my son were in the same preschool and elementary school together, and that’s how we got to know each other. And over time, the friendship evolved. And then she asked me to redo the whole kitchen,” said Glaister, whose goal was to bring a little peace and calm into the busy physician’s homelife.

One of the main design aspects was bringing a little light into what was a dark kitchen.

Glaister worked with architect Joe Smith from API architecture out of Modesto to re-engineer the back kitchen wall to put in all windows. The new, lighter shade cabinets was done by David Azevedo from Woodworks by David. The cabinets are laminate, which Glaister said “is not like your grandpa’s laminate. It’s heavy-duty, lasts for 100 million years, laminate.” They chose two different finishes to use to make it a little softer, an oak wood grain and then a linen finish.

“So it’s really, really calm and serene, because, as a physician, she has an extremely stressful life.”

As part of the remodel, Glaister and her team shifted the placement of the fireplace in the adjoining space. Valley Fireplace moved it to the middle of the wall for that dining area and then installed wall sconces that go with the light fixture that is eucalyptus leaf inspired.

Glaister praised the work of Deam Adkins of Adkins Construction out of Ripon.

“I just really feel like it was divinely inspired,” said Glaister about the project. “It was inspired by friendship and a desire for my friend to have the things that just really make her happy, and have her own special, happy, beautiful, calm space.”

The Colorful, Low-Maintenance Charm of Crepe Myrtles

Pruning Wisely Avoid the common mistake of “crepe murder”—severe topping that weakens the tree and ruins its natural form. Instead, prune in late winter to remove crossing branches, spent seed heads, and any suckers at the base.

Aim to enhance airflow and shape without overcutting.

Pest & Disease Watch Crepe myrtles are generally pest-resistant, though aphids and powdery mildew may appear. Neem oil or horticultural soap can help manage outbreaks.

Whether lining a driveway or anchoring a backyard garden, crepe myrtles bring elegance and resilience to Zone 9 landscapes.

A LOVE LETTER TO OLIVE OIL IN NEWMAN

By 2003, the trees were established, and by 2005, they had their first harvest.

Life rolled on. Piccirillo married, had a daughter, and moved to the Central Valley with her husband. They found a property that came with six acres of walnut trees. The walnuts didn’t last long. “We took them out and planted olive trees. Little baby ones,” she says, her eyes twinkling at the memory. That was in 1999. By 2003, the trees were established, and by 2005, they had their first harvest.

during her time in the Air Force.

“I didn’t realize it at the time,” she says, leaning back, “but olive oil was their everything. Butter? That was like a luxury item to them.” She chuckles at the memory. “The Mediterranean diet—it’s all olive oil. They used it for everything.”

Years later, back in California, Piccirillo stumbled across an article about two brothers in Marin County who gathered olives from backyard trees to press into oil. It sparked something in her—a curiosity that would evolve into a calling. “I thought, ‘I want to do this.’

I didn’t need much land, maybe an acre or two.” But in the Bay Area, even a modest plot of land was a pipe dream.

She tucked the idea away for another day.

thena’s Gift Local, an olive oil store run by Anne Piccirillo and tucked in off Main Street, is more than just a shop—it’s a celebration of one woman’s passion for liquid gold and the culture that surrounds it.

Piccirillo, the store’s founder, sits in her shop under the warm glow of string lights. Her olive oils, shimmer under the warm lights, arranged on the tables like a vibrant palette of greens and golds waiting for an artist’s touch.

Piccirillo’s journey to olive oil doesn’t begin here in Newman or even in California. It starts years ago, on the island of Crete, when she was stationed there

cherry-picking buckets strapped around their necks. She laughs, recalling the aching muscles and long hours. “We’d bring in a crew from Firebaugh. They’d knock it out in about two weeks.”

Her olives traveled to Nick Sciabica of Sciabica’s California Olive Oil in Modesto for pressing, and it was there Piccirillo found not competition, but a community.

“Nick mentored me the whole way,” she says with gratitude. He even called her to talk through the nuances of her oil.

Piccirillo explains that, like wine grapes, olive varieties have distinct characteristics. “We’ve got Mission olives—some of the oldest in California, brought here by Spanish missionaries in the 1700s,” she shares. “Each variety produces a different flavor profile. It’s an art.”

Out on the Gustine homestead, the grove is a mosaic of olive varieties, each row planted with purpose and personality. There are the Mission olives—hefty, round, and steeped in California history, brought to the region centuries ago by Spanish missionaries. Next come the Leccino olives, a popular choice for their robust flavor. And then, as Piccirillo puts it, her husband “went a little crazy” and decided to add Moraiolo olives to the mix. “They’re soft and lemony,” she says with a smile, as if fondly indulging a quirky yet brilliant idea. Frantoio trees stand nearby, known for their grassy, crisp flavor, while the Ascochinos boast versatility—perfect for either table use or pressing into a buttery, nutty oil.

The grove is as much a story of family collaboration as it is a commitment to quality. Piccirillo recalls how she divided the property with her husband. “I said, ‘I’ll take five acres for the olives, and you can do whatever you want with the rest,’”

she laughs. To Piccirillo, the grove, (which she prefers to call an orchard) is more than rows of trees; it’s a harmonious system where variety meets natural science. The wind sweeping in from the northwest serves as an unseen hand, pollinating the rows with precision. “I set it up so one pollinator tree is surrounded by five females, and the wind does the rest,” she explains. Years of trial and error shaped this design, her expertise rooted as deeply as the trees themselves.

Harvest season brings its own rhythm, dictated by nature and the subtle signals of the olives. Piccirillo describes how the fruit transitions through shades of green, red, purple, and finally black, marking its stages of ripening. “We start with the Leccino olives,” she says, explaining how their early readiness seems to send a silent signal to the other trees to follow suit.

“It’s like some kind of hormone gets released—by the time we finish with one variety, the others are perfectly ripe, almost like they were waiting their turn.” Piccirillo seeks a careful balance in her harvests, ensuring a mix of ripeness levels to create oils with diverse flavor profiles—some grassy and bright, others mellow and buttery.

Today, Athena’s Gift Local carries a blend of oils—some from Sciabica’s, others from small-batch producers across California, including Patterson and balsamic vinegars. “There’s so much amazing agriculture here,” she says. “I want to feature oils from these smaller orchards. It’s unique and supports local farmers.”

The shop is open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
