Kerr’s Grounds Services stays efficient by going robotic When it comes to managing multiple sites and tight schedules, efficiency is everything. For Charlie Kerr, owner of Kerrs Ground Services Ltd, investing in cutting-edge robotic technology has revolutionised the way he works - and the RM21 Combo Mower, distributed exclusively by Agrovista Amenity in partnership with XDC, has been at the heart of that transformation.

Charlie’s passion for turf management began over a decade ago.

“I started working at a school mainly on cricket and rugby pitches.

That’s where I got the bug for being a groundsman. From there I joined a sports turf contracting company, then worked at Dartford FC for a few years before moving on to Chelsea FC,” he explained.

After a short stint away from the industry, Charlie found himself missing life on the turf.

“I started with small maintenance jobs, but it wasn’t the same. I got back into football when Cray Wanderers FC needed a groundsman, and things just took off from there. Now I look after Cray Wanderers FC, Welling United FC, carry out some work at Sidcup Rugby Club, and a few private sites too.”

Managing several venues meant long hours and challenging logistics - until Charlie discovered the RM21 Combo Mower. “I was spending four or five hours every Friday marking pitches by hand. In winter, when the days are shorter, it was brutal,” said Charlie.

“Then I saw the RM21 on my phone one night and thought, ‘That looks incredible!’ A mower and a line marker in one? I booked a demo straight away – and I was blown away.”

The RM21 Combo Mower is a fully autonomous unit that cuts and line marks simultaneously, using advanced GPS technology. Controlled via a tablet or mobile app, it allows users to map, edit, and save pitch layouts, meaning even complex training grids or tournament layouts can be recreated at the touch of a button.

“I’ve left the RM21 cutting at Welling while I’m doing other work at Cray

Wanderers – it’s like having an extra employee. It basically allows me to do two days’ work in one.”

Since introducing the RM21, Charlie has noticed huge savings in both time and materials. “I’m using less paint than before. One tank of concentrate now does all my pitches. The lines are cleaner, brighter, and perfectly straight – and I don’t have to mess around with strings and pegs every week.”

The machine offers two operation modes: high-efficiency for quick turnarounds, and precision mode for detailed line marking, ensuring professional results for every situation.

Kress is making its mark Kress have been making a significant impact on the industry over the last few years and the German company has not been one to follow the traditional path.

Founded in 1928 the company has never made an internal combustion engine and their proud boast is that they never will.

With the drive to battery power, which is now embraced by so many of Kress’s competitors, Kress can be seen as leaders in the field and not a company known for ploughing a lone furrow.

It was Christian Kress who founded the company when he opened a workshop for car electronics at the end of the Roaring Twenties and from day one produced DC and AC electric motors.

In the Swinging Sixties the company opened a new factory in Bisingen, in

Germany, and they began making stationary workshop machines. By the end of the 60s they were producing a full range of portable power tools.

Ten years later a new Research and Development Centre was opening in Switzerland and there was a move towards cordless tools.

With a massive injection of capital and expertise when the brand was acquired by the Positec Group, bringing together heritage and innovation, research accelerated. A real breakthrough came in 2023 when Kress launched the eightminute CyberSystem, which boasted the world’s fastest-charging times, opening up the market to those who previously had concerns about all-day working with battery equipment.

A move into robotics seemed almost natural for the company as its parent company already had ten plus years of

For areas surrounding hotels, hospitals or care homes, or on busy multi-use sports pitches or school playing fields, a real benefit is the ability to cut grass overnight silently.

At a time when it is so difficult to fill vacancies, the benefit of being autonomous takes away the headache of having someone to operate the mowers while at the same time saves on labour and fuel costs.

MM Tetrasport proves its strength at Towcestrians Sports Club When the Women’s Rugby World Cup came to town, the pitches at Towcestrians Sports Club needed to perform at the highest level. Head Groundsman Tommy Waldock turned to a product he knew he could trust MM Tetrasport – and the results spoke for themselves.

Based in Towcester, Towcestrians Sports Club is an open, non-profit, multi-sports venue offering rugby, cricket, hockey, netball, tennis, and archery. Its facilities have grown rapidly in recent years, and today the site boasts four full-size rugby pitches, a cricket square, and an artificial surface for hockey.

For Tommy, who has spent his entire career in sports turf, managing a site of this scale is no small task.

“I started back in 2011 at Peterborough United FC. A friend of mine worked there and asked if I could help with some strimming. One

thing led to another, and they offered me a full-time job. That’s how I got into groundsmanship. From there, I moved to MK Dons, then spent five years at the Ricoh Arena before joining Towcestrians about six years ago.”

The club’s growing reputation was further boosted when it was chosen as an official training centre for the Women’s Rugby World Cup, hosting both Ireland and France for pretournament preparations.

“It was a brilliant experience. But it came with its challenges – especially during the drought. The pitch passed all the ProPitch tests with flying colours and MM Tetrasport really showed what it could do.”

Having first used MM Tetrasport during his time at the Ricoh Arena, Tommy knew it was the right choice for Towcestrians’ demanding rugby surfaces.

“I was always going to use Tetrasport for the Rugby World Cup prep because I knew how it reacts, and I knew how good it is. It’s been absolutely brilliant.

I’ve used it across all four pitches, and if you were to stand here now, you wouldn’t know we’d had a drought. The pitches are stunningly green.”

MM Tetrasport is designed for fast germination, rapid establishment, and outstanding wear tolerance qualities that have proved vital under the heavy demands of rugby training and matches. Treated with Headstart GOLD, it delivers strong performance

from the off, while the tetraploid ryegrasses provide resilience and excellent colour all year round.

“The recovery is unbelievable. You can have 40-odd players out there, and by the time you give the pitch a brush and a cut after training, you wouldn’t even know they’d been on it. I’ve never known a seed regenerate like it - it just keeps coming.”

For the Rugby World Cup preparation, Tommy followed a ProPitch specification involving deep scarification and reseeding with MM Tetrasport at 45g/m².

“We pulled out a lot of old bent grass, did a four-way scarification, and used nine bags of Tetrasport per pitch. The seed was up in six days – we saw the first signs of growth that quickly. We also applied a pre-seed feed after five days to help it along. It was flat-out from there – it just didn’t stop growing.”

The same mixture was used across the other pitches without scarification, and despite the heavy usage, the results have been equally impressive. “It’s superb,” Tommy adds. “It got through the tournament without even a scar and was recovering within a week once conditions improved.”

Tommy also credits the service and advice he receives from Matt Gresty from MM Seed and Charlie Seager from Agrovista Amenity for helping him achieve such strong results.

Aimee Davey joins ICL in key marketing role Aimee Davey joins ICL at a key point as the business moves into a busy period of campaign and product activity across its Turf and Landscape portfolio, taking on the role of Marketing Communications Manager for the UK and Ireland.

Aimee brings strong experience from the professional turf sector, having led marketing activity at GreenBest across product launches, brand development and

customer communication.

In this role, Aimee will lead all UK and Ireland marketing activity across the Turf and Landscape portfolio. Her responsibilities include campaign planning, product launches, events, PR, digital content and coordination with external agencies.

Ed Carter, Business Manager for the UK business, said that Aimee’s sector knowledge and practical approach

make her a strong addition to the team and will support the continued development of marketing activity across the business.

Aimee said she is looking forward to joining the team and building on the strong marketing work already in place.

The unique power of the Verti-Drain:

Kick and Heave aeration F

or more than 45 years, Redexim’s Verti-Drain has been synonymous with effective deep aeration – and at the heart of its success is something no other solid-tine aerator delivers in the same way – the unique kick and heave action.

Far more than simply punching holes in the ground, this controlled lifting and fracturing of the soil profile creates long-lasting benefits for turf managers who demand healthier, stronger, and more resilient playing surfaces.

While many solid-tine aerators move their tines straight up and down, the Verti-Drain does something else entirely. When solid tines enter the ground, they don’t just penetrate and withdraw – they kick and heave.

This distinctive motion, achieved through Redexim’s proven crankshaft mechanism, shifts the tines horizontally as they exit the soil. The result is a gentle but highly effective lifting action that restructures the soil profile beneath the surface.

This is the crucial difference. Without that kick and heave, aeration is limited to creating narrow, vertical channels.

With it, the Verti-Drain not only creates new pore spaces but also reshapes existing ones, delivering deep aeration that changes the physical structure of the soil – and its microbiology – over the long term.

in precisely to suit the soil type and site conditions. This level of control allows operators to move from gentle, maintenance aeration to more aggressive decompaction work as required, making it a truly versatile tool through the seasons.

How the kick and heave action works 1. Deep penetration: Solid tines are driven vertically into the soil to depths of up to 400mm, far beyond what standard aerators can achieve.

This allows the machine to target deep compaction layers or ‘pans’ that often restrict root growth and drainage.

As a best practice, operators should always start with a minimum depth and increase gradually to avoid overloading the machine and to achieve more effective, progressive aeration.

To adjust the working depth, the two bolts on either side of the machine are loosened before using the spindle at the top to set the desired depth. Once set, the bolts and spindle are re-tightened to lock the setting in place.

2. The kick/heave movement: As the tines retract, the crankshaft mechanism forces them to pivot forward, applying a controlled horizontal force. The angle of this movement can be adjusted from 90° to 65°, allowing operators to increase or reduce the intensity depending on soil conditions and desired results.

To adjust the tine heave angle, the captive nuts and clamping bolts are loosened, the angle is set to the required position, and then everything is retightened securely.

3. Subsurface fracturing: This movement creates cracks and fractures throughout the soil profile, lifting the surface slightly and breaking up compacted layers. These fractures allow oxygen, water, and nutrients to travel freely through the soil, encouraging

deeper rooting and more efficient drainage.

4. Minimal surface disruption: Despite the extensive subsurface restructuring, surface disruption is remarkably low. Play can usually resume immediately – one of the reasons the Verti-Drain remains a staple on golf courses, sports pitches, estates, and high-use amenity turf worldwide.

Long-lasting benefits to soil and turf The Verti-Drain kick and heave action delivers a range of meaningful and longterm agronomic benefits: • Deeper, healthier roots thanks to increased oxygen availability and improved soil structure.

• Better drainage, as the fractured profile allows water to infiltrate quickly and evenly.

• Reduced compaction, even at depths unreachable by conventional equipment.

• Enhanced soil microbiome, as the improved pore structure promotes microbial activity essential for healthy turf.

For many operators, the difference is immediately obvious. As Jay Berkhauer, Head Groundsperson at Sidcup Sports Club, puts it.

“With the Verti-Drain, the tines don’t just go straight in and out – they kick and lift slightly as they move through the soil. That heave action breaks up the compaction beneath the surface. It’s not just punching holes – it’s cracking the ground and waking the subsoil up. It is a real game-changer.”

GKB aeration duo makes a real difference at Walsham Le Willows Sports Club F

or Mike Powles and his team of six volunteer grounds staff at Walsham Le Willows Sports Club, the aim of their maintenance is simple: to keep the surfaces in the best possible condition all year round.

That task is now much easier thanks to the purchase of a Deep Tine Aerator and Combislit from GKB Machines – allowing the club to maintain consistently high-quality pitches, without reliance on external contractors.

Located in the heart of Suffolk

the club is a hive of activity, with 24 football teams and eight cricket teams just a few of those making the most of the multi-sport facilities. While the team of volunteers can keep on top of the regular grass cutting and general site maintenance, historically, they relied on contractors to aerate the pitches twice a year.

However, as Mike explains, this approach came with challenges.

“Contractor availability rarely aligned with our schedule or the ideal ground conditions which meant that costs quickly mounted, but the results weren’t always as we’d hope.”

Looking for a more flexible and cost-effective solution, Mike attended SALTEX, where he said the GKB Deep Tine Aerator stood out straight away.

“It looked solid and strong. You could tell it was built to last.”

Despite torrential rain on demo day, the results were evident – leading to the purchase of a 1.6m model via Ernest Doe close to two years ago.

“We now have full control over where and when we aerate. If conditions are good, we get it on the back of the tractor and away we go.

It’s lovely and straight forward to operate which is important for us as a volunteer team and has meant we’ve been able to get the DTA out more often which is paying dividend in terms of surface quality.”

Impressed by the performance of the DTA, the club returned to Ernest Doe earlier in 2025 to add a GKB Combislit to their fleet.

“We attended a GMA event where

the pitch advisor suggested we look at a slitter and, because the DTA has worked so well, we only looked at GKB.” Together, the DTA and Combislit now give Walsham Le Willows yearround options for aeration, whether the upper surface needs opening or for when deeper penetration is required.

“We’ve always been impressed with the service from Ernest Does, particularly Adrian Kersey who has been our point of contact for the last eight years. His support, together with that of GKB’s Tom Shinkins has got us up and running and, going into winter, the pitches have never looked better!”

Flood relief at Caersws Football Club C

aersws Football Club’s first successes came in the 1960s, winning the Mid-Wales League and the Welsh Amateur Cup. In 1992 they became founder members of the League of Wales and subsequently won the League Cup twice. The team plays at the Recreation Ground, Caersws, which accommodates up to 4,000 spectators.

Situated close to the River Severn, the ground floods regularly when the river bursts its banks in winter months.

But once the flood water subsided, the pitch would not be playable for up to two weeks due standing water on the pitch not draining away.

This results in the club having to move matches to another club’s ground, which had a 3G pitch, to meet the demands of the league schedule.

In the 2023/24 season, they managed only one game across three winter months (Nov-Jan). Playing elsewhere also meant supporters would not travel to games, so the issues mounted.

Investigations into the causes revealed the pitch to be sitting on 0.7 metres depth of clay and constant rolling over

the years had compacted the surface even further. Normal aeration would have no impact on the problem.

Club chair, Neil Lewis, had heard of the work by Terrain Aeration at other pitches and called them in to see if they could resolve the issue. Terrain has a unique system used for over thirty years with their Terralift machines.

The Terralift features a JCB road hammer and probe, which reaches a depth of one metre where it releases a blast of compressed air. This fractures the soil, creating fissures to allow drainage, and as the probe is withdrawn, dried seaweed is injected.

This has the effect of expanding and contracting with moisture and, in simple terms, keeps the holes open.

The process is repeated on a grid system, usually at two-metre intervals, to interlink the fracturing. The probe holes are backfilled with an aggregate and the surface is almost immediately playable.

“This season we had only one first team and a second team game postponed. We had the Ground Management Association come and

take a core sample. They found even though the topsoil was wet, the soil at depth was dry,” said Neil.

“We have also had the pitch scarified to remove thatch, so next season will see it drain even better. The difference since Terrain Aeration did their work is incredible and we will promote them to other club and associations looking for a drainage solution. It saved money, there was no digging and being non-invasive, we were able to play a pre-season friendly the same night as the work was done. Why would you not do it?”

Peebles GC’s Wiedenmann Terra Spike GXi8 HD brings era of smooth P

eebles Golf Club has used Wiedenmann aeration technology for over 25 years, including an original SpeedLink machine that delivered 23 years of dependable service.

Their newest machine, the Terra Spike GXi8 HD, was supplied by Wiedenmann UK’s Scottish dealer, Fairways GM at Kinross, who had also supplied the club’s Iseki TG6507 tractor in 2021 – an ideal pairing.

The move to the GXi8 brought an immediate lift in efficiency and finish, says Course Manager Steve Borthwick, who is supported by a team of three.

“We loved our SpeedLink. We knew its technology had been overtaken but it never failed us. When we moved to the GXi8 the difference was transformative.”

The GXi8’s increased working width from 1.6m to 1.8m and its VibraStop damping system were quickly noticeable, delivering a smoother run, keeping the machine steady, and

protecting both the operator and the Iseki, while covering more ground.

“Its versatility has changed how we aerate. We use it everywhere – greens, tees, walkways, approaches, aprons, and once a year across the fairways.

“On greens we run it twice midseason, we’ve introduced a hollow core annually in early October, and if conditions allow, we target three or four further outings across the winter,” explained Steve.

months ago was an enormous success.

Maintenance started with an all-over solid tine, using 20mm tines down to full depth of 250mm with 10º of heave. As hoped, that got right into the drainage layer, proving very satisfying and it made a substantial difference,” he said.

“We want greens playable all year — firm, healthy, and draining properly.

The 20 mm tines create channels through the profile, and inevitably your eyes are drawn to the cross-sections unplugged during hole changing; you can see roots following those channels down. It shows how deep-rooted and healthy the greens are, and it will keep them drought-resistant in the summer.

“The final finish means the greens are back in play fast. Disturbance is so minimal that golfers barely know work has been done, with no impact on ball roll. Golfers aren’t worried when they see the Terra Spike now. They know it’s for the health of the greens.”

United for success at Royal Portrush R

oyal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland provides one of the world’s greatest links challenges and is proud host to three Open Championships.

Over the last 20 years it has been working to improve water efficiency, precision, and sustainability across its renowned Dunluce and Valley links courses.

In a project involving entirely Toro irrigation products, Course Manager Graeme Beatt credits the improvements with enabling tournament-grade conditions while supporting sustainability and Irrigation Technician Chris Calvin highlights the autonomy and precision it has provided.

This project spans almost two decades and covers the irrigation milestones in the club’s constant quest for always evolving and benefiting from the latest technological developments.

The first stage, specified by Adrian Mortram Associates and carried out between October 2008 and March 2009, saw a complete irrigation remodel across the Dunluce and Valley Links – covering greens, tees, approaches, fairways, walkways, and surrounds.

The new irrigation design needed to bring comprehensive and uniform coverage and futureproof the water source, storage, supply, and delivery, using the best the industry could offer.

Further updates followed to bring in new control system technology, sprinkler design updates and accommodate course changes in conjunction with The R&A in advance of the 2019 and 2025 Open Championships.

The layout of the legacy non-Toro system didn’t extend to the greens

and ran off mains potable water of insufficient supply. The water storage facilities needed enlarging to allow for enough water storage capacity to accommodate an adequate supply in a sustainable way.

With the hosting of two Open tournaments in and around the upgrades there needed to be enough time for the grass to grow back in, to the point where it was impossible to note extensive work had taken place.

This can be challenging on a links course, where the grass species grow more slowly. Workmanship needed to be precise and incredibly clean.

Highly accurate water delivery was critical, as well as the ability to micromanage each sprinkler head and adapt to unpredictable conditions.

The club was an early adopter of the Toro GDC system and in 2008 Toro and Reesink supported Jim Price and the MJ Abbott team with the installation – from wiring right through to the programming at the back end – and provided training for the customer.

The GDC system brought proven aerospace technology to the club to allow for longer wire runs, smaller gauge wire sizes and more simultaneous valves in operation. Using a two-wire path to communicate to buried decoders, it accommodated larger systems with fewer wire paths, optimised water use and served the club well for over a decade.

In 2017 the system was updated again to a state-of-the-art Lynx central control system. The intuitive user interface combines all essential irrigation data in an easy-to-use format.

Over the years the scope of work included adding a 690m³ Vulcan

water storage tank complete with a new borehole, transfer pipework, a 125m³/hr pump station designed and fabricated in-house by MJ Abbott, an upgrade of the station’s electrical supply, the addition of five boreholes and the installation of additional mainline pipework.

Ahead of the club hosting the Open Championship in 2025 all sprinkler heads on both courses were replaced.

Greens, surrounds and fairways were installed with Toro Infinity sprinkler heads and with Toro Flex and B Series on the tees – a process that involved a total of 853 sprinkler heads and which the club did independently, under the direction of Chris.

What was the result? n Water security – supply and storage requirements can be met sustainably. n Maintaining shoot density and uniformity with a careful balance of moisture n Improved moisture consistency over the playing surfaces due to individual head control and the ability to target in millimetres rather than minutes n Scheduling to the second watering (calculated on millimetre application quantities) n Watering is targeted and savings are estimated to be up to 30 percent per unit area of maintained turf. n Better recovery rates and better germination on the fairways and grassed pathways.

For Chris the success of the project is the self-sufficiency. “Control, autonomy, the ability to problem solve, react and adapt to weather conditions and tweak for perfection, this is what technology brings and the result is natural links turf.”

Future-proofed irrigation B

edford School’s cricket facilities have undergone a significant transformation following the installation of a fully automated Hunter irrigation system, supplied by KAR UK and installed by JK Irrigation.

The upgrade has not only boosted efficiency but also future-proofed the grounds for continued development.

At the heart of the new system is the Hunter ACC2 controller, complete with an internet module that gives Head Groundsman George Mills and his team full remote access. Each grounds team member is responsible for a different area, and thanks to the Centralus platform, they can now manage their irrigation schedules from their phones, no matter where they are.

“We’ve got all the grounds team set up with their own logins. Chris, my deputy, manages the first team square, Glenn looks after the second team square, Anthony does the grass nets, and I focus on the smaller third team square. That bit of ownership means everyone really takes pride in their area – and yes, there’s a bit of healthy competition too!” said George.

The system features Hunter G-800

TTS valve-in-head sprinklers around the main cricket squares and Hunter I-25 sprinklers for the smaller areas.

Two 25,000-litre tanks water storage tanks and a Lowara pump system, controlled via an integrated unit, ensure powerful and consistent pressure – around seven bar – which is a dramatic improvement on the previous setup.

“Our mains pressure was poor – barely one bar. Before, we were moving a single sprinkler eight to ten times just to get coverage. Now we can water the first team square in 15 to 20 minutes at night when it’s more efficient and better for the plant.”

Two thousand metres of pipework now runs beneath the surface, installed

by JK Irrigation with help from the in-house team for reinstatement works. The installation also includes 13 strategically placed water boxes across the site, all configured to accommodate future system expansion.

“We’ve designed this with the long term in mind. We’re hoping to add a fourth cricket square soon, and we’ve already got the infrastructure in place to irrigate it. We’re also planning a full renovation of the first-team rugby pitch, and the irrigation will go in first so we can reseed quickly and maintain momentum,” added George.

The system has already proven invaluable during periods of dry weather. The team can now reliably water in granular fertilisers – even in hot conditions – and maintain the feeding schedule without compromising on turf health. Beyond the immediate benefits, George sees the project as an investment in both the grounds and the people who manage them.

“Everything we’ve done – the system, the infrastructure, the way it’s all been set up – is about improving the site for the next 10 years and more.” n www.karuk.com

“It hits the five to seven year wall.

In the first three to four seasons everything is absolutely fine and then come the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh year and the growing medium hits the wall.

“I’ve seen it many times and unless it’s managed really well, things will change quite dramatically. The soil chemistry changes, the percolation regresses, there is more thatch. This is exactly what happened at Royal Norwich.”

David made his first visit to the club and was shocked by what he found.

“There was a lack of aeration and top dressing, also a lot of moss and dead grass. The disease was there. Grass coverage was between 40% and 50%.

“The tees were very spongy and full of thatch. They had been overfed with nitrogen and there hadn’t been any top dressing or hollow coring for some time.

The fairways were also not in particularly good condition. They were straggly and hadn’t been managed well. Some of the greens were down to around 30% grass coverage. They looked neglected and were very sick.”

“It was quite a sorry state of affairs,”

recalled David, who has vast experience of finding solutions for golf courses and stadium football pitches with extreme problems.

“So, I put a report together and made a constructive plan. I advised Royal Norwich of the budget. However, for results to be achieved it would take six to seven months. I insisted that they needed to stick to the plan, product selection and timeline to achieve our joint goals.”

Given that David was approached in January of 2025, not the ideal time of year to turn an ailing golf course around, he had to find a “quick fix” to show progress before the club’s annual subscriptions came up for renewal. No pressure!

“In February and March, we bought some new top dressing, sands and a Cold Start Mix of grass seed. We used

hen the directors of Royal Norwich Golf Club decided the time was right to relocate from their Hellesdon home to a larger site at Weston Longville, they vowed to only accept the best of everything.

Top golf course architect Ross McMurray, from European Golf Design, was brought in along with renowned golf course constructors MJ Abbott.

Funded by the sale of the old site to Persimmon Homes, which was becoming squeezed by the growth of Norwich itself, the new £10 million club, boasting a 7,200 yard 18 hole course; six hole academy course; a superb clubhouse with excellent leisure facilities Royal Norwich launched to huge fanfare and great acclaim in 2019.

It truly was a beacon in an area of the country not renowned for its golfing pedigree and was immediately ranked in the UK’s top 100 and fourth in the east of England.

Everything was terrific for the first few years – until the course began to experience problems. Disease struck and what once were quick smooth greens, began to lose their grass coverage.

Everyone was at their wits end and didn’t know where to turn to find a solution. That is until someone suggested that the club speak with David Snowden, Managing Director of Agronomic Services Ltd, based in Ripon, North Yorkshire.

Royal Norwich and the team involved are extremely relieved they did. David instantly knew the root of the problem and proceeded to use his technical diagnostics.

DLF seeds, supplied by Ian Barnett, Regional Technical Sales Manager, to give some coverage on the greens which by this time was less than 30% in some areas.

“The greens team needed to be very aggressive in beating up the surface, as per our advice. Gavin Fox, who was the First Assistant and a fine greenkeeper, had been frustrated. This was because he had been previously unable to carry out these processes.

“We threw the kitchen sink at the golf course, not just nutritionally, but physically, chemically and management wise just to get the surfaces to open up. We went from a very tight 20mm of unpleasant thatch straight into an abyss of sand. It was really a case of removing most of the surface through verticutting, scarification, and hollow coring. We removed vast amounts of poor-quality surface matter.

“We added a ceramic, which in this case was Floratine’s RZA (Root Zone Amendment). It’s a piece of clay one mm in size very similar to sand, twice kiln dried to become ceramic which is a very hard piece of clay. Clay has a negative charge, so it improves the cationic exchange capacity – CEC,” explained David.

“Under a microscope, RZA looks like a sponge. It holds moisture, but it also holds positive elements, calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc. So you create an environment where you can have a feed without jeopardising percolation. Traditionally, it would have been a medium such as peat. This amendment achieves success when applied into the soil.”

During the construction process an alternative amendment had been used, unfortunately we discovered this was now to far down in the rootzone.

David recognised Gavin’s greenkeeping skills and they worked together as a team to push the maintenance work forward.

“I took Gavin under my wing advising when the appropriate techniques and practices would gain optimum results. We had all right machinery which enabled us to be aggressive to the surfaces of the greens,” said David.

had been aware that things were going downhill over the last couple of years and were keen to embrace the new regime.

“He had been very upset and concerned about the condition of the course and so seeing the positive results has given everyone a great sense of achievement.”

The condition of the course came to a head in 2024, when things rapidly

declined in the latter half of the season.

“That’s when they lost huge amounts of coverage. If I remember rightly, it was a dry spell and there were insufficient volumes of natural water available. The team had no choice but to use very poor-quality irrigation water which accelerated a series of problems.”

It’s almost as through Royal Norwich couldn’t catch a break. Poor quality irrigation water on top of everything else!

“As they irrigated the greens, the bicarbonates in the water chemically sealed the calcium and magnesium and other cations. In other words, the positive charged elements sealed together in the upper root zone and were literally strangling the nutrition earmarked for the roots,” explained David.

There is a specific product, CalpHlex, which is designed by Floratine for extreme conditions. For example, in the UAE where they suffer from poor

“We use CalpHlex as a solution when poor irrigation is an issue and have seen positive results in numerous situations.

This is a process that we applied monthly in order to eradicate the repeat of buildup. Royal Norwich have now created a huge lake reservoir at the bottom of the course with improved water quality than previously used.

Enormous progress has been achieved through teamwork, liaison with the greenkeeping team and Agronomic Services Ltd throughout all the stages involved.

“We are increasing the efficiency of the root zone during the next three to four seasons. This is key. At the same time, the need to overseed will be reduced. A more structured feed programme including liquids

and granulars in combination will be followed.”

David has well and truly embraced a project which initially was extremely challenging. He said the best is yet to come and remains keen to continue the teamwork with Gavin and the greenkeeping team to ensure that the club has a positive future, with a golf course worthy of it directors, members and guests.

Royal Norwich has made the list of the Top 20 Best New Courses 2016 – 2025 in the world as determined by Golf Inc magazine. This is a highly prestigious accolade for the golf course.

“David Snowden’s expertise has transformed our greens in record time, demonstrating the power of professional guidance in achieving excellence,” said Therese Swanson, Chair of Board of Directors at Royal Norwich Golf Club.

A relieved golf club…

“He also knew the urgency of the situation as we were significantly losing reputational impact and not seeing as many new members join.”

The early work carried out produced some excellent results.

“We got grass coverage on the greens straight away and the members were ecstatic. They couldn’t quite believe that we had made so much improvement so quickly.”

The work is on-going with another major issue addressed – that of irrigation water.

“The poor quality water certainly didn’t help. It definitely wasn’t drinking water, let’s just put it that way. We have a very big reservoir but a lot of the aerators had broken and the previous team had decided that it wasn’t a priority for financial investment,” she revealed.

But with mitigations put in place the irrigation water supply is now much improved as is the fortunes of the club.

That was Royal Norwich Golf Club Director, Therese Swanson’s opinion of David Snowden, of Agronomic Services, who has managed to put the golf course back on track after a two year period when the course was virtually lost to disease.

Therese and her fellow directors had brought in three or four companies to give the course a health check and provide solutions to a problem which was getting worse and worse.

However, as soon as they met with David they knew they had their man and they trusted him wholeheartedly when it came to working through the solutions he not only recommended, but demanded be carried through.

“He would come on site and he had a long way to drive to get here. He was also always on the other end of the line with our Head Greenkeeper. He was always there for us. He also assured us that if something wasn’t working we’d try something else, explained Therese.

t takes foresight, imagination and determination to launch a trade show in our industry, but with The Scots Turf Show, which has quickly become a feature of the Scottish amenity turf scene, it also took a visit to the Golden Arches.

That is where Richard Heywood and Alan Thomson, both well known figures within the Scottish scene, came up with the idea of launching a Scottish-based show to fill the void left when the original Scotsturf closed its doors over 10 years ago.

“It was back in 2019 and we were having one of our regular catch-ups.

We got chatting about trade shows and we got on to wondered if we could bring something back for the Scottish market,” recalled Richard, of the pair’s meeting in the McDonald’s close to Ibrox stadium, in Glasgow, “We really missed the old IOG Scotsturf Show and we thought that there must be a way of doing something

which would bring back the sense community within the Scottish turf scene,” said Richard.

Richard and Alan, while never having been with the same company have worked alongside each other for many years, wanted to see if there was

an appetite to do something along those lines. If there wasn’t, they would console themselves with the fact that they’d given it a try.

The chat continued and what came out of it was an Open Day held at Falkirk Tryst in 2019.

“The only way that we felt we could make it work was to get some companies interested in the idea and work together. That is what we did and that first Open day worked really well.

We thought it was a tremendous and were planning a bigger show for the next year. Then along came Covid,” recalled Alan.

After the enforced lay-off Richard and Alan returned with what they also called an Open Day, this time at Hamilton Racecourse.

“We really didn’t want to go to Edinburgh or Glasgow, as traffic can be an issue, but while considering potential venues, Hamilton Park Racecourse became a possibility,” said Alan, whose day job is UK & US Sales Manager for SIS Pitches.”

“We paid a visit, walked around the site with Mark Bemrose, who was Head Groundsman at the time, and we also met with the caterers, Sodexo.

We looked at each other and thought this place is absolutely perfect,” said Richard, whose day job is Product Specialist for Campey Turfcare.

“That year, 2023, it was effectively the 12 companies who we’d already working closely with at Falkirk Tryst.

There has continued to be a group of us that gets together once a year and looks at the direction we should be going,” said Alan.

That first Hamilton event was a huge success with excellent speakers delivering interesting talks in front of a large and appreciative audience. Over 300 people attended and immediately plans were put in place for the next year – what the guys call the first The Scots Turf Show.

Well 2024 went from 12 companies to just over 60. Then last year, when the rain gods paid a visit, there were over 70 companies in attendance.

“This year we are looking to be pushing beyond those 2025 numbers,” said Richard.

One nagging issue that was at the back of their minds was what the GMA might think of the Scotsturf name being taken, tweaked slightly and becoming The Scots Turf Show.

Those concerns were quashed when Richard bumped into Jason Booth, the GMA’s Operations Director, at a Saltex a couple of years ago.

“I saw Jason walking towards me and my first thought was ‘Oh no, what is he going to say?’. But he was brilliant, very positive and full of encouragement,” recalled Richard.

Jason’s message was to go for it and if it was successful he’d be absolutely delighted.

“We’re actually paying homage to what it once was, and I think the GMA appreciated that,” said Alan.

The original Scotsturf, had been a fixture on the Scottish turf calendar for many years.

“It was great for bringing together everyone from the Scottish side of the industry. Initially it was a one day show and there was a real buzz about it,” said Richard.

“There were buses coming in, the place was rammed. It was just a brilliant occasion, almost like a mini Harrogate. It had that same kind of vibe about it.

“Then it moved to two days and

transferred from the Lowland Hall into the Highland Hall but the show just wasn’t big enough to fill it and it just seemed to lose momentum,” he added.

While accepting that they are not in the same league at the UK’s bigger shows the guys want their show to aspire to be a little like that other recently launched show – GroundsFest, with a blend of fun and business.

But visitors to this year’s show – on March 4th – will see the developments that have been introduced since the 2025 edition.

“We’re going to try and have badges printed off so that people will have lanyards and badges so that we know who people are when they’re walking around the show field.

“We’re also increasing the value of the food vouchers which will add to the visitor experience,” he added.

Another important element of the day is the education and, again, they are hoping to build on what they had delivered in previous years.

“We’re going to take more control of the presentations. Last time we gave exhibiting companies slots and told them that they could talk about whatever they wanted..

“This year it will be a lot less commercial and we’re taking control of who’s going to be talking and what they’re going to be talking about. Listen to top professionals within our industry imparting their knowledge should be a draw to people to come and listen,” said Richard.

The layout this year will be more compact and give it a definite feel of walking into an event.

“We’re not a GMA, we’re not a

Looking beyond that?

“If the show decides to get much bigger we would move it, we’re not wedded to Hamilton. Its natural home might be Ingleston, but we are mindful of costs increasing when you move to these big venues. And that increases the risk,” explained Richard.

At the current rate of trajectory those might be good problems to have but as it stands The Scots Turf Show is moving along nicely and 2026 is shaping up to be a must visit event for everyone in the Scottish turf industry.

We’re not, and we don’t profess to be, so we ask all our exhibitors to help promote the show. We provide email headers and footers for them to include in their correspondence to customers and suppliers,” said Alan.

The only other help that the Show gets is from Campey Turfcare, who offer admin support, but the guys are keen to stress that The Scots Turf Show is very much independent.

Looking down the line and to the future of The Scots Turf Show Richard is honest “I don’t know where we want to take it. It’s down to the visitors. We could get a year where nobody wants to exhibit and then the show dies. We could get a year when nobody comes to visit and the show dies. So we’re really driven by what people want.”

On the other hand, they have to consider how to grow the Show if the momentum that has been created

ere’s the scenario. You attend an interview for the job of your dreams and, having waited all day for the phone to ring, are called and offered the position. What would you do? A. Accept before the caller had finished telling you the good news or B. Ask for 10 minutes to think about it.

Well, you might have expected Hibs season ticket holder Steven Thomas, pictured above, to be an option A kind of a guy, when he was called on October 31st, 2022, and offered

the position of Head Groundsman at Easter Road.

However he went down the option B route and spent the next 10 minutes calling everyone of importance to him to ask their advice.

“I thought I might have blown it!” he recalled, thinking back to the moment.

In mitigation you could say that it was a case of making sure that heads ruled hearts in h is decision, but for a dyed-in-the-wool Hibs man, if he’d thought about it, anything involving “Hearts” was always going to be a long shot.

It says much for Steven, however, that, given the importance of the job to him, he didn’t jump straight in and that he took time to weigh up everything before accepting the position.

He’d come from a golf greenkeeping background and prior to his move to Easter Road was Deputy Head Greenkeeper at Prestonfield Golf Club, in Edinburgh.

“Although I had been in golf all my working career, I was more of a football man and I had always said that I wanted to work at Hibs. I was

never good enough to play for the team, so the next best thing would be to work for them.”

When the job was advertised on social media he was obviously interested, but was unsure if it was the right time in his career to go for it, hence the hesitation when he got the job offer.

“My partner said, ‘Look, we’ll never know if it is the right time until you try it. If you go for it, we’ll back you all the way.’. So it was very much a family decision to apply,” said Steven.

It wasn’t just his agronomic knowledge and experience that shone through at interview, it was the passion for the club and the team.

“During the interview I said my ambition was to be producing pitches for Hibs in European competition season after season. At the time Hibs were struggling a little bit but my boss-to-be obviously saw that drive and ambition in me,” said Steven, who is now producing those very European competition pitches.

He actually put some of his ultimate success in getting the job down to a piece of advice he got from one of the former work mates.

“I have always taken advice from people I’ve worked with and one of them suggested that I make up a portfolio of photos of my proudest work to give the interviewer something to look at.

“So I made up a folder of around 20 pictures and it seemed to go down pretty well because he did cast his eye over a few photos and actually asked questions about some of them.”

Having got the job, three weeks later Steven was preparing his very first football pitch for a top class match – Hibs against Livingston in the Scottish Premiership.

“In my first few weeks I probably pushed too hard because I really wanted to make an instant impact, but at the end of November that was

IN SOME WAYS IT WAS GOOD AND BAD BECAUSE I WAS LEARNING VERY QUICKLY, BUT I WAS UP AGAINST IT WHEN IT CAME TO GAME DAYS.” never going to happen. I was hell-bent on making a big impression when, in hindsight, I should have maybe eased off a bit.”

The club had been without a groundsman for about three months prior to Steven’s arrival with the essential work being carried out by a contractor “It is fair to say that there had been a lack of key maintenance going on in terms of aeration, nutrition and lighting rig deployment,” said Steven, of those tough first few weeks.

Ah, lighting rigs. How did a man, fresh off the golf course, know anything about lighting rigs and how to get the most from them?

“The be all and end all is that I didn’t know anything about lighting rigs,” he admits.

“So I had a week or two where I was on the phone to TLS, who had supplied the rigs, and in particular Mark Sinnett.

“I called everyone I knew who worked with rigs, trying to get as much information as I could - where to put them, how they’re set up, how they work. Basically starting from scratch,” explained Steven, who also picked the brains of Tony Owens and Scott Robinson.

“TLS had also supplied us with a shade analysis for the pitch, including data on where and when sun sets, where the sun goes down, the number of hours these lighting rigs should be on the pitch and where they should be deployed. That was very useful.”

Having got to grips with the intricacies of the job, it would be fair to say that Steven has started to make a real impact.

He sees golf greenkeeping and football groundsmanship as offering very transferable skill, while being different in so many other ways.

“For me it’s the aspect of the environment round about you. Where a golf course is predominantly an open air venue, stadiums are more enclosed.

That said here we have four separate stands with open corners which gives a bit more sunlight and airflow than some other stadia.

“Like a golf course you’ll still get hot spots and cold spots. I always say you could need a jumper and a jacket

standing on the south west corner of the pitch and the same time be on our North East corner in shorts and t-shirt,” said Steven, of a pitch which, until the year 2000, famously dropped six feet from south to north.

“So it just shows you the difference between the stadium and the microclimates within it. With golf courses, you’ve got 18 different micro-climates,

maybe more, but we are all trying to make them perform the same. It’s about trying to be consistent.”

One of the other main differences between golf and football is the smaller staff base. “For my first year I was here on my own and, looking back, it was a tough time. In some ways it was good and bad because I was learning very quickly, but I was up

go so we’ll come in around 7am.

“What Ronan and I normally do is cut one way together and then once we get halfway through the pitch, I’ll disappear and get the line marking set up and then follow behind Ronan to finish the cutting.”

The rest of the match day squad is made up of volunteers.

“They come in an hour before kick-off and we have a coffee and a catch-up. Once the players go out onto the pitch, we follow them behind them divoting, just to make sure everything’s smooth and running well.

They are super guys, who do it for the love of the club and we couldn’t operate a match without them.

“At half time we go out together as

a team. and pitch-fork and divoting.

I’ll make sure the moisture levels are where they need to be. After the game, we spend about an hour divoting,” he explained.

Having seen the pitch on television the Sunday before our chat for a match against Celtic, the pitch looked immaculate, but how does Steven envisage moving things to the next level?

“The pitch is predominantly a fibre sand base with a hybrid stitch, to give us a bit of reinforcement and stability, However, it is over 20 years old and, I would call it, the equivalent of a push up green on a golf course. It’s a push up hybrid pitch. We are also working with an old boiler system, an old

against it when it came to game days.

“You’re having to do double cuts and line marking, and I was here on my own. I was spending 15-hour days here, coming in when it was dark, and leaving when it was dark.

“It was a very lonely time, but again, you look at the bigger picture, it was a very crucial time for me in terms of how I was learning,” said Steven, who has since been joined by his Deputy Ronan McKenna.

A match day always exciting.

“For TV cameras up here in Scotland we have to be set up three hours before kick off. For a standard three o’clock Saturday kickoff we have to have the pitch cut, lines marked goals in place and everything ready to

irrigation system and an old drainage system,” he revealed.

“So right now we’re at the position where more investment is required to get to the next level,” he explained.

“When I came in here three years ago I would sit down and plan and prepare a case for all expenditure, even produce a spreadsheet detailing why I thought we needed this and how it’s going to benefit the club. That would be for something as small as a

hand tool. “For an entire pitch that is obviously a bit of a harder sell. First and foremost the cost, second of all the tight time scale between close of one season and start of the next fto enable us to turn it around - going from renewing everything from soil, drainage, under soil heating, to the grass on the surface.

“The club know what they need to do and where they need to go.”

As a fan, and a former season ticket holder, does it feel weird working alongside players you were once cheering from the stands?

“When I came in, some of these guys were almost my heroes, but now they’re just colleagues and when I see them we chat just the same as regular colleagues and friends do.”

Steven is prolific on social media both for the Hibs support and for the rest of the sports turf sector.

“The supporters love it. They love seeing what goes on behind the scenes on a day-to-day basis. They love seeing how we do things, what we do and what we’re trying to produce for a match day,” said Steven, whose profile saw him invited to talk at the recent TurfTech conference in Switzerland.

His work also gets noticed at every level within the club.

“I always remember our CEO pulling me into his office one day for a chat about social media. I immediately went, ‘Oh oh, here we

go’ and was at the point where I was about to apologise when he said, ‘I love it. I love what you do. I love how passionate you are about the club and I love the interaction it’s getting from supporters. I love it. Keep it going’,” he said.

With his ability to interact on social media, never mind his agronomic skills and professionalism, Steven is very much a part of the new breed of turf professionals working within the industry.

If that phone call came through to offer him the job tomorrow, I don’t think he’d need the same time to think about accepting. It’s a job which seems to fit him like a glove.

urf Matters was delighted to attend Husqvarna’s Living City Conference for the third time.

Having experienced the Paris and Malmo conferences in ’23 and ’24, the ’25 edition was in the spectacular Catalan city of Barcelona.

It certainly lived up to its predecessors with its perfectly balanced programme of high quality speakers painting a picture of the future and the Husqvarna boffins showcasing how the company is making sustainable city living more attainable, while providing delegates with a glimpse into the future.

Split into an afternoon session, held in a magnificent auditorium in the middle of the city, and then a morning session at the renowned El Prat Golf Club on the city’s outskirts, the programme featured many interesting and thought-provoking presentations including one from Liverpool Football Club, who partner with Husqvarna. Led by Rishi Jain, Director of Impact and Warren Scott, Director of Ground Operations, the pair talked on how the “Red Way’ has scored nine sustainability awards.

From clean energy to thousands of trees on site, and HVO biofuel coaches, the LFC training grounds boasts worldleading sustainable practices. Featuring wildflower habitats, fruit orchards and bee posts, AXA, academy and Melwood training grounds are looked after by Husqvarna robotic mowers.

The hybrid grass pitch has been separated into plastic and rootzone, both of which are being processed for recycling. The materials are broken down to create outdoor seating across the club’s estate.

The award-winning strategy also introduces a living wall at AXA training

centre, as well as large wildlife pond creation and landscaped areas.

Approximately 96% of energy for Anfield and all club properties (including two training grounds and other areas) comes from renewable sources; committed to reaching almost 100%.

Biodiversity initiatives led by Warren’s team include habitats across all the club’s sites – trees, hedgerows, ponds, council engagement and broader environmental works.

Waste and recycling achievements: matchday recycling rate increased from 25% to 96% over a three to four year project through education and bin-use

ANDERS ENVISAGED A DATA-DRIVEN, INCREASINGLY INTELLIGENT ROBOTICS FUTURE WITHIN FIVE TO SEVEN YEARS, EXPANDING FROM RESIDENTIAL TO FULL PROFESSIONAL LANDSCAPES. optimisation. Earlier Yvette HenshallBell, President of Husqvarna Europe, had opened the conference by saying that real change happens when theory becomes action.

“That’s why we host Husqvarna Living City – to bring the industry together and accelerate sustainable green space maintenance.

“Barcelona is a role model in implementing nature-based solutions, and we are grateful for their participation as well as for the valuable contributions shared by experts from across Europe.”

With the programme split to cover a range of topics as well as an insight into the latest Husqvarna developments, it was an opportunity to listen to some of the most innovative thinkers on wider issues.

Among these was Michiel Boreel, Global Chief Technical Officer for Sogeti, a company founded in France nearly 60 years ago which, among a range of services, advises on how best to harness AI. Among the nuggets Michiel offered up to the international audience were two memorable quotes in relation to human intelligence and harnessing AI – “Human beings are to thinking as cats are to swimming. They can do it but they prefer not to” (Daniel Kahneman); and “The question of whether machines can think is about as relevant as the question of whether

submarines can swim” (Edsger Dijkstra).

Michiel’s talk was much wider than anything generally aimed at a sports turf, landscaping or even Living City audience, but he had everyone in the palm of his hand as he spoke of the goal being that such intelligence is adding to human capabilities, not replacing them.

“Human stupidity and our unconscious, self-destructing capacity are a greater concern than machine intelligence. AI should be a crutch to help us make better long-term decisions.

“Historical economic growth has not necessarily led to improved well-being, as it was often channeled into more consumption – bigger cars, houses – rather than genuine progress,” he said.

The pursuit of AI is critiqued as a misguided goal because it focuses on replacing human intelligence rather than augmenting it to solve real-world problems.

Michiel argued that the primary issue is not a lack of intelligence, but human ‘stupidity’ – our inability to foresee and act on the long-term consequences of our actions, as exemplified by the historical use of asbestos in cigarette filters.

This was coupled with a critique of the economic model of exponential growth, which is presented as fundamentally unsustainable and a driver of environmental disaster, without a guaranteed return in human well-being.

There you are. Not something you’d expect to hear at a conference hosted by one of the world’s leading outdoor power product companies, but information and knowledge you’d rather be with than without!

From a company perspective Husqvarna, as usual, provided a glimpse into their future.

At Husqvarna’s panel, Senior Vice President Anders Bengtsson outlined a strong push into professional robotics and battery-powered equipment.

Key launches include the 540 robotic mower for small municipal areas; AI Vision

for wildlife/object detection, remote start, and flexible connectivity (local reference station, 4G, cloud).

Backward compatibility and retrofit paths for 560/580 models emphasise the desire to offer a sustainable approach and customer investment protection. Fleet management upgrades promise up to 50% faster installation and better connectivity resilience.

Beyond robotics, they unveiled a new battery Front Mower, with approximately six hour runtime and a battery chainsaw targeting true 50cc petrol-equivalent performance.

Anders envisaged a data-driven, increasingly intelligent robotics future within five to seven years, expanding from residential to full professional landscapes.

Also on the programme were presentations from the GEO Foundation as well as a deep dive into Barcelona’s own green infrastructure.

The GEO took time to highlight the environmental benefits of golf, calling it the most nature-based sport, with versatile, often multi-purpose greenspace in strategically important locations.

Around 50% already have natural and semi-natural vegetation, delivering a wide range of social and environmental benefits.

Marc Montlleo outlined Barcelona’s Greenery Model which involves ensuring their own quality green space should be accessible to all city residents; a connected greenery which requires a network and true green infrastructure and designed to reconnect to the city’s various green spaces as well as preserving and improving the space which already exists.

It is quite encouraging to hear that so much work is being done to ensure that the future is better than the present in one of the major cities on the planet.

It’s in stark contrast to the innumerable United Nations Climate Change Conferences – Cop 26 being the latest – which seem to clock up the air miles for politicians from around the world and rarely come up with any consensus as to what needs to be done to reverse all the negative climate indicators.

Perhaps it would be better to take politics out of it and leave decision making and action to those who have the long term interests of the planet at heart.

I always come away from a Living City Conference with a positive skip in my step as what we learn of is bright minds, working hard on important issues and genuine progress being made.

I’d been Editor of Greenkeeper International for just under a year and had spent the months leading up to Harrogate promoting the occasion through its pages – there weren’t any social media platforms, or even the internet, in those days.

So when came to drive up to the famous old town I thought I knew what to expect. I didn’t. BTME was much more than I could have imagined and it has remained part of my life for the subsequent 30 years.

It has grown, shrunk and grown again over that period but, other than the one Covid year and the next when it was moved to March, it has remained as a constant in what has become an increasingly fast-moving industry.

What was once dominated by machinery and fertiliser bags has been overtaken by robots and AI. Large display monitors have replaced flags and banners and faces that I first became familiar with three decades ago are looking a little more wrinkled and topped by a thinner thatch! Not least my own. Smiles are just as wide now as they were in the last century, however.

So, I’m looking forward to this year’s BTME. The Halls will buzz during the day and the streets, pubs and restaurants will buzz during the evening.

Changes at the top at ISEKI UK and Ireland

David Withers, Managing Director of Iseki UK and Ireland, retired at the end of last year following a distinguished career spanning more than four decades in the turf care and grounds maintenance industry.

Speaking at the SALTEX show in 2025, David reflected on his time at ISEKI, describing the process of building the brand as “one of the most fun and satisfying things I have done in my career.”

Under his leadership, the company has doubled its sales over the last eight years and continues to grow.

David began his career demonstrating verti-drains for Charterhouse Turf (now Redexim), followed by 25 years at Jacobsen, including six years as President. His eight-year tenure at ISEKI UK & Ireland as a stand-alone entity marks the culmination of his full-time professional journey.

“I feel it is time to finish full time work... I may still do a bit of consulting and advise for a couple of companies, but plan to end serious work and focus on developing a golf swing and a tan!” he said.

Expressing confidence in the future of ISEKI UK & Ireland, David said that he had worked with Alan Prickett for around 30 years and am very comfortable leaving the business in his hands to keep it growing and prospering for many years to come.

He also extended his gratitude to dealers, customers, and fellow manufacturers for their support and partnership throughout his career, wishing them continued success.

In addition to his role at ISEKI, David has been an influential figure within the industry, serving as a director of the Agricultural Engineers Association for many years and as its president in 2022. During the recent AEA 150th celebrations, he spoke at an event in the Houses of Parliament.

He has also recently taken

up a Directorship at the Grounds Maintenance Association and intends to continue contributing to the organisation in his retirement.

Replacing David as its new Managing Director is Alan Prickett Alan brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent nearly three decades working closely with David, fostering a shared management ethos and strategic vision that has
