LANDSCAPING A real credit to the industry I can’t honestly believe that this is issue five of Landscaping Matters. I must say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working on the magazine, and within the industry, over the last 12 months and that’s down to the people I’ve met and spoken with over that time. To a person they have been engaging, thought provoking and talented, and a real credit to the industry.

In this issue we have spread our net a little further than before, with interview with young Australian landscape designer, Daniel Althaus, who has made huge strides in a very short space of time. His successes include winning the People’s Choice Award in Melbourne in 2023, something which has very much whet his appetite for more of the same. He is hoping to get over to these shores soon and I’m sure he will make a very good impression when he does.

I was also delighted to attended the very first GroundsFest in September and was delighted to see the Landscaping Zone.. It brought in a different mix of turf professional society and very much added to the atmosphere of the entire Show. I hope that the Landscaping Zone continues to grow develop at GroundsFest, as it is the ideal environment in which to network and share ideas. Those are the same ideals and goals that we have for Landscaping Matters.

COMPO is top of the range for bowls greens Ian Dickson, a bowling green contractor, believes that COMPO EXPERT products have proved to be top of range without the premium price tag. Ian originally started his career in greenkeeping but switched to bowling green maintenance ten years ago. While admitting it is a completely ‘different animal’, Ian says he quickly got an appetite for maintaining bowls greens and has done so ever since. He explained how he first started using COMPO EXPERT products on bowls greens. “In my greenkeeping days I used to order a lot of products from Agrovista Amenity (the exclusive national distributor of COMPO EXPERT’S turf products in the UK) and my representative was Ramsay MacGregor. I stayed in touch with Ramsay when I switched to bowls because he is very knowledgeable, and he gives valid reasons behind using products. Ramsay is genuinely interested in a plant’s health and his advice is key to my operations. “Ramsay came in and looked at

the bowls greens I was working on. He suggested using some COMPO EXPERT products and explained how they had been getting great results on some golf courses, so I decided to give them a try.” COMPO EXPERT believes in sustainable, integrated turf management by focusing on modern fertilisation concepts, consistent regeneration of growth and optimal support of the plant’s own physiological processes. All of which promote vitalisation, stress tolerance and root development while providing optimum turf quality. The innovative product range includes specialty mineral and stabilized fertilisers, slow and controlled release fertilisers, water soluble and liquid fertilisers as well as biostimulants, trace elements and soil conditioners. The first product Ian tried from the COMPO EXPERT range was Fertilis® Speed, an NPK complex fertiliser with emphasis on nitrogen for spring and summer application to promote growth and a quick green-up. “The green where we applied the Fertilis® had a lot of bare areas and the growth has been tremendous,” said Ian. “We applied it in May and had a full 12 weeks out of it. There has been less disease, the sward is a lot thicker, and even during a big drought period the

greens performed superbly.” Ian also maintains a sand-based green which is prone to leaching. For this green he applied Floranid® Twin Eagle K – an extra fine granulated slow-release complex fertiliser of excellent solubility. “The nutrient levels on this green are very hard to maintain. With the Twin Eagle K, you don’t get the flush of growth in the way you would from the Fertilis®. Instead, you get an even, consistent growth. I judge the consistency of it by looking at the amount of grass cuttings I take from the mower each week. We get three boxes of cuttings three times a week and that underlines how consistent the Twin Eagle K is. Again, we get excellent results.” Ian claims that he has been very impressed with the longevity of the products and believes that there isn’t much on the market that can beat COMPO EXPERT products in terms of performance and price. “A lot of other fertilisers just don’t have the longevity that these do,” he said. “We were using a cheaper fertiliser in the past and I was applying twice as much product, so it ended up costing me more. “The COMPO EXPERT products are top the range, but you don’t pay top of the range prices for them. They are very fairly priced compared to their competitors.” n www.agrovista.co.uk/amenity

dense root structure and has great stability in the turf.” Greenheaven also features excellent drought tolerance, something which Miles believes is essential. “When making a decision on species/cultivars, drought tolerance is of high importance. The irrigation is used to provide the correct firmness and traction for the ponies and players, so irrigation is for playability more than plant health. Irrigation is time consuming so the sward will have periods of no irrigation therefore the pitch needs to have excellent drought tolerance. In the hot/dry summers of 2018 and 2021 it was the only thing that was thriving. Water security and responsible water usage will be a factor for the future, so affects the decision-making process.” Commenting on the use of Greenheaven at Black Bears Polo Club, ICL’s Martyn Parrish, said: “It’s been a collaborative effort learning from each other along the way, listening to Miles’ unique needs and requirements to produce a top polo pitch and providing the correct advice to meet those needs.” n www.icl-growing solutions.uk

Writer and TV presenter goes Blooming Wild for Euroflor Flower Seed Lynne Allbutt is a writer, TV presenter, speaker, and an advocate for Euroflor Flower Seed. In her recent column ‘Green Scene’ written for the Western Mail newspaper, Lynne pays the biggest compliment. “Whenever I use or talk about wildflowers, there is only one company I recommend and that’s Rigby Taylor who are part of Origin Amenity Solutions. They provided the seed for the memorable wildflower meadows at the Olympic Park back in 2012, and more locally, have provided a lot of seed for Monmouthshire Council, and a few years ago for some of the roundabouts in Blaenau Gwent. If you have seen any of those displays, you won’t have forgotten them.” Lynne runs a garden design business and is a gardener at heart with a passion for the outdoors and is often described as a Champion for Mother Nature. She continues, “There are numerous fabulous mixes to choose from, making sure there is something suitable for every site and situation. Euroflor offers a wide range of mixes including horticultural cultivars and/or UK native and naturalised species in varying combinations. Mixes are available for spring or autumn sowing and there are 11 mixes to choose from in the Euroflor Project Pollin-8 range. This project is a major initiative at reversing the decline in pollinating insects by including high yielding nectar and pollen flower mixtures. Or you can choose from the ‘Flora Native’ range, a collection of Native UK provenance wildflower seed mixes. This seed can be sown all year round as long as the moisture and temperature is conducive to germination and growth. Specific mixes are available for wild birds, and bees and butterflies as well as for different soils and situations, like woodland, wetland, coastal and flowering lawns.”

Lynne’s article is packed with sensible and useful advice. “If you haven’t sown your flower seed yet, get them in the ground as soon as possible. The weather conditions can change so quickly and there is still time to have a hot, dry summer, so a good start will be helpful for them. I’ve just sowed a lot of wildflower seed around the edge of my veg patch, on a couple of verges and on an awkward bank. It’s not too late, and they’ll provide a welcome splash of colour and food for pollinators at the end of the summer. It is important to remember that good wildflower seed is not ‘free seed’ or even ‘cheap seed’, but it can still be cost effective, covering much bigger areas than shrubs or herbaceous plants and is often more cost effective – and safer – than strimming difficult areas. Interestingly it is also a cost-effective option for large, grassed areas that would normally be mown regularly. Mowing paths through swathes of wildflowers has to be one of the most fantastic ways of utilising any green space. Wildflower banks are particularly striking as the blooms

are ‘displayed’ more effectively and using wildflower areas between boundaries and the main sections of a garden is an excellent ‘transitional trick’ – and treat. I encourage everyone to ‘experiment’ with a patch of ‘properly-done’ wildflowers to see the benefits for yourself. Attracting pollinators, uplifting the mood, dealing with difficult areas, including poor soil, are just some of the boxes ticked by this under-used flower power.” Lynne concludes, “Most people who had bad experience using wildflower seeds was simply because they used inferior seed. I am determined to change this and encourage everyone to have a patch of wildflowers in their garden, whether you go for a handful or a hectare. David Carvey at Origin Amenity Solutions is happy to advise on the best seed for your requirements and conditions and is also generous with practical advice. You can contact him on 07774 943629.” n www.lynneallbutt.co.uk n www.rigbytaylor.com/flower-seed LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 5 | 7

Compact tractors

Impressive power in compact packages from Avant

Finnish compact loader manufacturer Avant Tecno has introduced two new loader models in the popular Avant 600 series: the single-speed Avant 635i and the double-speed Avant 640i. Both new models have the all-new Kohler KSD engine, which provides more usable power because of its electronic injection and simple operation with no exhaust after-treatment necessary. Building on the globally recognised Avant concept of compact but mighty machines, the new Avant 635i and 640i models complete the renewal of the Avant 600 series. It is popular in many fields of work such as landscaping, farming, property maintenance, construction and demolition, and horse stables. The new Avant 635i travels at 12 km/h, and the maximum speed of Avant 640i is 23 km/h. Both models are equipped with a certified ROPS/FOPS canopy as standard – the modern, spacious GT cab enclosure with ergonomic design is also available, providing more safety and operator comfort.

Stage V and Tier 4 Final emission standards in mind: its power and other features have been optimised to 19 kilowatts, eliminating the need for a particulate filter. The three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine gives the machine plenty of torque in the low rev range. Also, there is very little power drop in high altitudes. The electronic injection adapts to varying load conditions much better than a conventional injection system. An Avant user will notice this when doing earthmoving work with a bucket. Pushing and lifting simultaneously won’t stall the engine. Thanks to the new diesel engine, the auxiliary hydraulics’ previous output of 50 l/min has been increased to an oil flow of 66 l/min, which is exceptionally high in this power class. The new 635i/640i models work very well with hydraulic attachments that require higher flow, which enables an even more versatile and efficient use of the loader.

KOHLER KSD ENGINE AND HIGH OIL FLOW

GAUGES HAVE NOW BEEN REPLACED BY A CONVENIENT MULTI-FUNCTION DISPLAY

The completely new electronically controlled Kohler KSD 1403 engine is a common rail diesel engine with a displacement of 1.4 litres and an output of 26 hp / 19 kW. The engine was designed with the requirements of the latest

NEW FEATURES AND A NEW LOOK

The Avant 635i and 640i models have a safety-enhancing electric power distribution unit (PDU), where most of the fuses and relays are located. The safety features of the loader are now controlled by a separate electronic control unit of the loader (VECU). In the cab, separate gauges have now been replaced by a convenient multi-function display. It provides the Avant user with varied information on the loader, such as engine speed, oil flow of auxiliary hydraulics, fuel quantity, current fuel consumption, outside temperature, hydraulic oil temperature, load alarm, total operating hours, maintenance info and fault codes. All this is available in 11 different languages. The design of the machines and the cover panels are identical with the 645i/650i models, which makes the appearance very modern and the loaders easy to service at the same time. Available now In Stage V and Tier 4 final countries, the new Avant 635i and 640i models replace the previous models, Avant 635 and Avant 640. In Stage 3 countries, the range will continue to include the 635 and 640 models with 37 hp Kubota engines, and the new “i” models (635i and 640i) with the Kohler KSD engine will be offered additionally. n www.avanttecno.com/uk

hen you learn that you will be reading about a talented Victorian landscape gardener, you might be thinking that we’ve uncovered the workings of a 19th century protégé of the great Capability Brown. While that may have been quite a coup for Landscaping Matters, the fact is that we do have an interesting article for you, but the Victorian we are talking about is not based on history, but geography. Daniel Althaus is a young upand-coming landscape designer, based just outside Melbourne, in the State of Victoria, Australia. Daniel founded Althaus Landscape Designs less than two years ago, but in that short time he has made huge strides towards his goal of becoming an established figure on the international scene “I’ve not been going long, but I’ve already done a Show Garden and lots of other things which have helped propelled the business into quite a healthy place at the moment,” said Daniel, speaking to Landscaping Matters over Zoom. That’s a fair assessment, as the Show Garden he was referring to was at the prestigious Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show and picked up the People’s Choice Award as well as a Silver Medal. And all that has done has whet his appetite for more success. “To be honest with you, I’m pretty hungry and I think a visit to Chelsea is not too far away. I’ve got it in my business plan for the next five years. It’s definitely something that I want to chalk up. I really want to become an international landscape designer, that’s very much a goal of mine. “There are a lot of opportunities

12 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 5

all over the world for landscape designers to grab and I’m definitely hungry for that,” revealed Daniel. He is a confident guy, but don’t confuse this with the bravado of the talent show contestant who announces to all that he is going to be a global superstar and sell out stadiums throughout the world, but has never had a singing lesson in his life. Daniel has spent time laying solid foundations to his career and, although still in the early stages, knows what he has to do to get to where he wants to be. “My background stems from a love of art and being creative. In my early teens through to my 20s I enjoyed painting and visiting galleries. Coupled with that my grandmother instilled a love of nature and when you combine those two things you have the recipe for what I do now.”

He didn’t enter the industry straight away, as he had four years in the Australian Defence Force, something he credits with providing him with discipline as well as project management and communications skills. “It gave me the ability to run a team and that has been really useful.” His landscaping came in once he had left the ADF and he spent four years working on the tools … for his mother-in-law’s company! “She was a great boss. I can say that now! She had gone to one of the most prestigious horticultural schools in Australia and I could go to her, even when we were off the clock, and ask about plants and how to do certain things. It was like having an encyclopedia in my back pocket.” For younger readers an encyclopaedia is a little like Google, but in the form of a book or series of books. “I stepped up in the business and became a key designer for many gardens throughout Melbourne. I was really blessed to have had that opportunity.” With the course of his life and career assured, Daniel began studying and completed a landscape design course, something he felt he needed to do to enable him to move to the next phase, before launching Althaus Landscape Designs. With the knowledge of his motherin-law to fall back on, and the support of his fiancée, on the business side of the company, Daniel has managed to avoid many of the costly mistakes which hamper so many fledgling companies, but he does remember the first garden he designed with a degree of pain. “I started small and my first design was a domestic front garden and }

“I WORK WITHIN A BIG CATCHMENT AREA SO I NEED TO HAVE TRUSTED PEOPLE IN LOTS OF DIFFERENT AREAS AND WHILE IT HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE TO BUILD THAT TRUST QUICKLY, I DO FEEL THAT NOW I HAVE, GOING BACK TO MY MILITARY DAYS, MY TRUSTED LIEUTENANTS.”

} I charged him $750. That was my

first mistake. I just spent too much time going back and forth and realised quickly that I should be logging all my hours and not under charging and over delivering!” The key to taking Daniel to the next level was his Show Garden at Melbourne which he did with the support of his Horticulture School. “It was just five by four, but was all native plants and designed to be a wildlife garden which would bring in the birds, the bees, the lizards and the frogs.” Such was the success of the garden that he has been contacted by numerous people asking for him to do something in plots, often of an acre or more in size. “There is one at the moment at Bells Beach, in southern Victoria, which is an eight acre block. The client is saying ‘Let’s design it. Let’s do it’, and it’s going to be pretty special. I’ll be able to be really creative and bring in another dimension with the wildlife so that it potentially becomes a habitat garden.” Another project revolves around a Buddhist Temple, in Mount Helen, close to Daniel’s home, where there is a three acre site that the monks want to turn into a botanic garden. “The project is a little intimidating because you really want to get it right and there are many elements to think about, not least the religious element, but they want to use lots of plants and use it as an educational space.” While Daniel is keen to spread his wings, and a Show Garden at one of the main UK events is very much on his radar, he is someone who specialises in native Australian plants. However, he does believe he

14 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 5

can produce great designs anywhere. “There are always going to be design principles which are always going to be important and, as a designer, you have to stay true to these key elements. On that level the skill set is always going to be transferable wherever you are. “However, I do think the biggest hurdle would be plant knowledge and an understanding of the climate and soils – I could talk to you for hours on soil prep and that kind of stuff! I try to be a bit more of a plant nerd every day. You can’t ever finish learning about plants. “Having a task like a British garden would a massive challenge, but I’d strive to make it the best it could be.” His process is generally to work through the concept, then the working drawings and 3D models before bringing in a team to carry out the ground work. He and a horticultural team then come in and do the planting. “I work within a big catchment area so I need to have trusted people in lots of different areas and while it has been a challenge to build that trust quickly, I do feel that now I have, going back to my military days, my trusted lieutenants. “Being there to supervise the planting means that I can tweak things that might have looked better on paper than when the plants place in place. I find that it works successfully when I have the final touches at the end – those final brush strokes.” In recent years landscape designing has taken on a much higher profile – similar to chefs and interior designers – and there is a showbiz side to what had previously been a niche, behind closed doors profession. There is

such a thing as celebrity status for the top landscape designers. “I never really thought about that when I started out but Charlie Albone was on Dancing with the Stars on Australian TV and the profile of the job has risen. I’m not sure I would be chucking on the sequins and following in Charlie’s steps though.” Daniel has always been keen to tap into the knowledge of the established designers he meets. “I’m not at the level of a lot of the guys who have been around for 30 to 40 years and built really established companies and done a lot of amazing work – not just gardens but to benefit the industry as well. “One think I always strive to do is tap them on the shoulder and pick their brains and the industry is very generous with its time. It’s not just a case of the top tier and the rest. It is the top tier educating through the ranks and sharing their knowledge.” Now, what do you ask an ambitious young landscape designer? Where will you be in five years and where will you be in 10 years, of course? “In five years I’d really love to have done one, if not two, international Show Gardens, a few more big projects and have a few more designers on the team. There are a lot of Shows in the UK and I do have my eye on Hampton Court. I would really like to start conversations with the RHS fairly soon. “In 10 years’ time I’d like to have the business in a position where it is humming along nicely so that it doesn’t take 12 hour days to keep it going. That would be the goal to enable me to spend a bit more time with the family.” His six month old daughter arrived just at the time he was producing the Show Garden for last year’s Melbourne Show, and he gulped when he realised that she would be 10 and a half in 2033. Daniel may be a different type of Victorian to that which I mentioned at the start, but I do believe that we will be seeing a lot more of him as his business grows, with his combination of talent, hard work and ambition proving a recipe for success.

ET Lander is extra staff member at Olympic Park The Etesia ET Lander electric utility vehicle is like having an extra member of staff according to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s Head Gardener Gary Spreadbury. Following a competitive procurement process, idverde was selected as a grounds maintenance partner for the Queen Elizabeth Park in in early 2012. Ever since then it has been responsible for park, plant and wildlife management and maintenance. Gary Spreadbury has been the Head Gardener at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park since May this year, and he claims his working life has been made a little easier by the Etesia ET Lander. “What I really like about the ET Lander is that it fits and can manoeuvre in tight spaces around the Olympic Park,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of small paths which big vehicles can’t fit down, so it’s very efficient and time saving. It’s used mainly for the transporting of materials around the site, especially during the winter and autumn months when it comes to the leaf clearing

and for the mulching of the gardens.” 100% electric, spacious, well-equipped and user-friendly, the ET Lander is built on a robust chassis and has an array of options including a three-way tipper bed with dual control from the fully fitted two-seater cab or by remote control when outside the vehicle. With a length of just 3.72 meters, the ET Lander is very compact. Thanks to the power steering, the short turning radius of 4.40 meters and 360 ° visibility, it goes anywhere. The autonomy of the vehicle lasts for a full working day – without noise pollution, can transport loads of up to 940kgs and can also tow up to 750kgs. “I’ve used battery powered vehicles before but in my opinion the ET Lander is the best by far,” continued Gary. “It runs a lot smoother and feels like you’re driving a car; it is so light that you could take it onto the pitch without causing damage and it just makes working life a lot easier. The ET Lander is like having an extra member of staff – it’s definitely earning

its living and is well worth the money.” Gary isn’t the only one at the Olympic Park who has been impressed with the ET Lander. Chris James, Contract Manager for idverde, is also upbeat about the innovative electric utility vehicle. “Aside from its ability to manoeuvre, the ET Lander has lots of other great features such as reversing cameras and the option of adding things to it like PTO’s, salt spreaders and water tanks. I like the fact that it’s got some storage units within the vehicle underneath the body too.” n www.etlander.co.uk

Mansfield Sand improves drainage and rooting Matthew Newman, Grounds and Sports Turf Manager at Hartpury University and College, in Gloucester, believes that MM40 from Mansfield Sand plays an integral role in his renovation work. Hartpury University and College are specialist education providers in agriculture, animal, equine, sport, and veterinary nursing, offering world-class degrees and facilities to over 4,500 students from over 60 countries. Matthew himself, pictured below, was once a student at Hartpury. Fast forward two decades and he now oversees a team of thirteen members of staff at the college where he became qualified. Matthew and his team have been carrying out their own renovations for three years after previously employing contractors

to do the work. When it comes to sand for renovations, he uses MM40 Sport from Mansfield Sand. Mansfield Sand is a company with history and pedigree – its origins can be traced as far back to 1840. It has been a long-standing pioneer in the development and production of premium sandbased products and boasts the most up-to-date and advanced equipment currently in the industry. From winter sports pitches, golf courses, bowling greens and all amenity turf areas – Mansfield Sand has a solution for all. MM40 Sport is sourced directly from the Two Oaks Quarry in Mansfield where the company produces its renowned Mansil range of Silica Sands. MM40 is a medium sand which is predominantly used in the construction and maintenance

of a wide range of sports surfaces.

“THE REASON FOR THE SAND IS TO TRY AND CHANGE THAT SOIL PROFILE AND GIVE THE GRASS SOMETHING TO REACH INTO.” “We mainly use the MM40 for renovations,” said Matthew. “We use two tonnes of it on the PGA spec Mackenzie golf green; so, we vertidrain it and then we will top dress with MM40. “We use ninety tonnes of if on the football pitches. This year we are taking the pitches down to 10mm. We then take all the debris off, scarify in three directions, and then collect any debris again so we have massively opened up the pores by now and got rid of all the thatch. We then will fertilise, top dress with the MM40 sand and then apply the seed.” Matthew continued to explain exactly why a good quality sand is so important. “We are predominantly on heavy clay, so in the winter it is holding moisture, and, in the summer, you can’t get enough moisture into it. The reason for the sand is to try and change that soil profile and give the grass something to reach into. So, we are trying to break that pan of clay up and inject sand into it. “It’s a theory as opposed to digging up the entire pitch and starting again, but we are already seeing the MM40 improve drainage and rooting.” n www.mansfield-sand.co.uk

Keeping it real and native WHICH FEED IS BEST?

The Lawn Association team always promote the importance of keeping real lawns in our gardens as a way of encouraging natural biodiversity throughout the whole of the UK .

KEEP IT REAL AS NATURE INTENDED

Before moving on to the top tips for lawn care jobs in October. We must give a mention to keeping lawns real! It is crazy to replace a key sustainable component of our living environment with artificial grass, a coal and oil-derived product, one of only limited life span and almost impossible to recycle. Keeping lawns real (& native) are one of the most kind and sustainable things that you can do when it comes to good and sensible lawn care!

NEED TO CONTROL MOSS? THEN SCARIFY!

Don’t wait until you see a lot of moss on your lawn, get prepared in advance and scarify! The earlier you start the better as this will offer

good thatch control and make it harder for moss to take hold in the first place. Although March, April or September are the best months for this, you can use this technique in October too if it is still warm enough.

THE AUTUMN FEED

If you do decide to scarify your lawn this month, apply a good balanced autumn feed afterwards. With all the debris and moss gone, new grasses will find it easier to flourish.

You should certainly avoid polymercoated fertilisers that will poison the soil with plastic. Instead, choose something organic such as True Grass you need an organic which has been made from recycled food waste, which breaks down into useable minerals and vitamins. It also contains humic, fulvic and amino acids, as well as seaweed, mycorrhiza and an organic wetter. Sustainable, organic and rich in all the essential elements key to healthy grass and soils, organic feeds such as this are the much more sensible choice for kind lawn care. The Lawn Association wants to make accurate lawn care information readily available via their website and free Membership Scheme for gardening enthusiasts. Hard and soft landscaping

Cheltenham Ladies’ College invests in SISIS When the grounds team at Cheltenham Ladies’ College received investment for new equipment, Ross Spry, Head of Grounds and Gardens, decided that SISIS machinery was a good place to start. Established in 1853, Cheltenham Ladies’ College is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. It is consistently ranked as one of the top allgirls’ schools in the UK. Ross has been the Head of Grounds and Gardens for approximately fifteen months after joining from the nearby Cheltenham College. Ross and his team maintain all CLC’s lawns and sports pitches which includes lacrosse, athletics, rounders, and cricket. His job has been made that little bit easier after College invested in some new machinery, as he explained. “When I first started at CLC a lot of the kit was old and it was apparent that several machines needed replacing. I’m pleased to say that a big investment was made and so I started sourcing new equipment. “I’ve always been impressed 20 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 5

by SISIS machinery and have used some of it throughout my career – particularly when I was a greenkeeper. I’ve found it to always be very good kit and it is always solidly made.” His first purchase was the SISIS Auto Rotorake Mk. 5 - a selfpropelled heavy duty scarifier for removal and control of thatch on fine and other quality turf. Its contra-rotating reel has specially designed tipping blades for a clean, consistent cut and maximum thatch removal to ensure excellent lawn care when the time comes to scarify. Ross explained how he uses the SISIS Auto Rotorake Mk. 5: “The Mk.5 is predominantly used on our big lawns and for end of season renovations on the cricket square. It is a great machine, and we find it is one of the better machines for scarifying the cricket squares. It has got so much torque, and it can get through the hard clay, more so than any other scarifier I have used. “The Mk.5’s best feature is how robust it is. A cricket square is probably one of the toughest things you can put it through,

and it doesn’t bat an eyelid.” Ross was also adamant that he wanted a SISIS Dart. This independently powered vertical action aerator improves drainage, reduces turf compaction, thatch build up and increases the health of lawns. Powered by a 6.5hp engine, the Dart has a working depth of up to 100mm which can be easily adjusted from the operator’s position using the balanced depth control lever. The unit can also be fitted with a wide range of tines to meet the operator’s requirements. “I’ve used the SISIS Dart at every venue I have worked - mostly on cricket squares. We always use it when we are renovating to break the surface up a bit, and I do tend to use it occasionally during the winter periods. We use the pencil tines, to keep the air circulating. “The Dart is so easy to operate. All my staff can use it – and that is important because we need machinery which every team member feels comfortable using. “Once again SISIS has not let me down.” n www.sisis.com

Jo Desborough, Head Gardener for The Bedford Estates, believes that a range of Pellenc battery-powered equipment is proving to be powerful, reliable, and extremely comfortable to work with. The Bedford Estates is the largest private landowner in the Bloomsbury area of London and manages a varied portfolio of properties. These range from office and educational premises, hotels, restaurants, and retail premises to residential properties, lock up garages and formal garden squares. Jo, who oversees The Bedford Estates landscaping team, provided some reasons behind choosing to go down the battery-powered route. “We’ve chosen battery-powered products for nearly all our major maintenance equipment because it’s more sustainable. It’s easier for us to use batteries and recharge than it is to go and get petrol and all the associated issues with keeping fuel storage. They don’t smell, there are no fumes, which is another important issue in the city, and then there is the noise aspect because we have a lot of residents that we don’t want to disturb with loud machinery. “For all these reasons, we chose Pellenc.” Over recent years, Pellenc has gained market recognition by offering a unique range

Pellenc makes light work for Bedford Estates of ‘zero emission’ batterypowered tools, thanks to the development of Lithium-ion ultra-high-performance batteries. The extensive Pellenc product range features an impressive portfolio – from chainsaws, pole saws and hedge cutters to grass strimmers, brushcutters, blowers and mowers; many of which have been helping the team at The Bedford Estates, as Jo explained. “We’ve tried other brands before Pellenc, but we have found that Pellenc’s interchangeable batteries makes it easy for us to switch between different products. It’s more efficient for us to use an entire brand across the series. “The batteries last an incredibly long time, all day in fact. There

certainly aren’t any issues in power; the lawnmowers handle whatever we throw at them, the leaf-blowers are equal to petrol ones. Having the battery on your back, as opposed to a fuel tank attached to the equipment is a huge advantage. It’s made lighter work for us, that’s for sure.” Jo also added that the support she has received from her Etesia dealer, RT Machinery, has been invaluable. “They have always supplied us with our machinery and have helped us to make the right decisions for various bits of equipment that we use.” Pellenc is distributed exclusively in the UK by Etesia UK. n www.etesia.co.uk/pellenc LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 5 | 21

Dennis ES-860 is the King of King’s

Roger Neale, Head of Grounds and Gardens at King’s Hall School in Somerset, has claimed that his new Dennis ES-860 battery-powered mower has been “unbelievable.”

Roger Neale, Head of Grounds and Gardens at King’s Hall School in Somerset, has claimed that his new Dennis ES-860 battery-powered mower has been “unbelievable.” Roger was a greenkeeper for 22 years before landing the position of Head of Grounds and Gardens at Kings Hall School - an independent school for boys and girls aged from 2 to 13. He is currently working towards a ten-year replacement machinery plan, and explained how a new mower for the cricket square was of the utmost importance. “The previous mower we were using was old, so the time had come to replace it. We had conversations with the Operations Manager as the school are very keen on enhancing its green credentials. We are doing all we can to be environmentally friendly, so we decided to explore the possibility of battery-powered mowers. “There were a few different brands we looked at; some were good while others had issues but the Dennis ES-860 stood out. Dennis is a British company with lots of great history and quite frankly their mowers are everywhere.” The Dennis ES-860 is a 34” battery powered turf management system which delivers maximum versatility and has a range of 13 interchangeable cassette options to provide a solution for many day-to-day maintenance tasks such as cutting, scarifying, brushing and verticutting. The aim with the Dennis E-Series is to help professionals meet sustainability and environmental

“ANOTHER HUGE BENEFIT OF THE MOWER IS JUST HOW QUIET IT IS. I CAN HEAR THE BIRDS SINGING WHILE I’M MOWING NOW.” 22 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 5

initiatives, reduce carbon footprint emissions, running costs and noise without any range anxiety. After working with petrol machinery throughout his entire career, Roger was somewhat sceptical about the performance of a battery-powered mower but admitted that the Dennis ES-860 quickly changed his opinion. “It is unbelievable,” said Roger. “I need not have worried about the battery running out too quickly. In fact, we can double cut our squares and the percentage of the battery afterwards will be 98%. Plus, with it being a smart charger, you can top the battery up in no time at all if we ever need to. “Another huge benefit of the mower is just how quiet it is. I can hear the birds singing while I’m mowing now. We no longer must be mindful of disrupting classes, exams, or assemblies and no one comes to ask us to stop what we

are doing. For a small team this is great because we are no longer limited to specific mowing times.” The Dennis ES-860 was designed following the concept of the Dennis G860 petrol-based cylinder mower and many customers like the fact that traditional G860 cassettes will fit the ES860. Roger is no exception. “We have very close links with King’s College, Taunton, which is on a separate site about three miles away, and the grounds team there have a Dennis G860,” he said. “This is really helpful because we often borrow cassettes from them. I’ve used the brush and the verticutter. In the case of verticutting, I like how you can increase the cassette speed but slow the walking speed down which helps to take out more material. “I’ve not got one bad word to say about the Dennis ES-860.” n www.dennisuk.com

Cobra expands ITS cordless offering with new Long Reach Hedgetrimmer Following extensive customer demand, Cobra has introduced a new model to its ever-popular 24-volt range of battery-powered equipment. The cordless range, which currently consists of a GT3024V Grass Trimmer, LB45024V Leaf Blower, CS1024V Chainsaw, and H5024V Hedgetrimmer with a range of 50cm, has been expanded with the introduction of the new HT50LRH24V Long Reach Hedgetrimmer (RRP £134.99). Cobra’s current cordless hand tool ranges are powered by both 24-volt or 40-volt models, with the 24v collection proving to be incredibly popular with gardeners. Compact, reasonably priced yet powerful, the range is ideal for gardeners with typical sized gardens and those looking for a tool that’s simple and easy to use. The brand’s new Long Reach Hedgetrimmer is designed to tackle the most awkward jobs, with the versatility to change from a standard

50cm cutting length to the longreach option. The exten-sion pole simply clicks into the main body of the tool before attaching the standard hedgetrimmer blade, granting an additional metre to help reach taller hedges. To further aid this, it also has an articulating head that moves through 90 degrees, with a dual handle switch, and is light and easy to use weighing just 3.34kg. It has a double-sided reciprocating precision cutting blade with a tooth spacing of 20mm, along two-speed modes (eco and turbo), making hedge shaping and tidying even easier. Not only that, but all the tools in the 24v range operate off the same interchangeable battery, meaning buyers no longer need to worry about finding a plug socket or tripping over wires, all while powering one tool from one battery. Peter Chaloner, managing director of Cobra, said: “We are continuously looking for ways to expand the 24v range, creating

more commercial opportunities for dealers and providing gardeners with useful, compact tools that stand the test of time. Our standard 50cm hedgetrimmer has proven to be very popular with buyers, but we noticed that many gardeners required a model with a longer reach – so we knew we wanted to create a product to fill that gap in the market. The demand for cordless tools continues to grow, as people seek convenient, hassle-free options.” Cobra is the leading name in garden machinery and has the UK’s largest range of powered lawnmowers. n www.cobragarden.co.uk

GroundsFest

Windy, wet and

Scott MacCallum reports back from GroundsFest, the latest trade show to enter the industry

A

week before the first ever GroundsFest, at the National Showground in Stoneleigh, a look at the long term weather forecast raised a little bit of concern. A show which traded on its outdoor/indoor USP did not need strong winds and heavy rain. However it says much for the organisers that they rode with it and when the opening morning did open to torrential rain and winds – ironically they held off virtually until 9am, the official opening time of the Show – they were ready for it. The gales blew, the rain fell, but the visitors kept filing in and within an hour there was the familiar buzz of a successful show. Indeed the outdoor/indoor format enabled some exhibitors, with an eye on the forecast to transfer their stands inside where the facilities matched any indoor exhibition floor in the country. Throughout the day those station outside were thankful for their gazebos for two reasons – it kept them dry and it attracted visitors to the them, for a bit of shelter and a potentially worthwhile chat. The much heralded festival was also an excellent innovation. The 24 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 5

rain stayed away for much of the time allowing to eat and drink in some degree of comfort before taking in the music – the Queen tribute band proved a huge success banging out hit after hit. A symbolic rainbow also an appearance. Crowd estimates were in the region of 500+ who remained for the festival with those staying in hotels in nearby towns greeted by coaches to ferry them back, and then returning them to their cars in the morning. Day two opened, and continued, in glorious autumn sunshine, giving a smug look to all those visitors who had decided to forego the opening day in favour of the second. It also meant those working for exhibitors who had taken an outdoor as well as an indoor stand, and who had manned the outdoor stands on the first day but negotiated a swap with their indoor colleagues for day two, felt a little hard done by! My initial thoughts where how unlucky it was that the first day had not enjoyed the second day’s weather, but on reflection I believe that the fact that the show operated well on the opening day, during far from ideal weather, will stand the

show in fine stead going forward. With a strong landscaping element to the show there was a slightly different vibe to GroundsFest which differentiates itself from the other two main shows in the sector. It ensured a nice blend of visitor and there was a relaxed atmosphere across both days. A large part of the two days was the education programme which was held at five indoor theatres –as well as an outdoor programme. Among the organisations taking part were the STRI, the Amenity Forum and Lantra while notable names to deliver the programmes included Keith Kent, Chris Parry and Martin Sampson while on the landscaping side was Naomi FerrettCohen and Peter Donegan, who flew in especially from Ireland to talk on his Melbourne Show Gold Medal. Another speaker, at the start of his career in the industry, but having already shone in another, was former Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Luton Town player Henri Lansbury, who having retired from football has launched a new company Grass Gains with a couple of his former groundsmen colleagues. Henri’s love of all things turf has

seen his company already secure contracts at Fulham, in the Premier League; Genk, in the Belgium League; AS Monaco in the French League and, more recently, Real Madrid, in Spain. Event Director Christopher Bassett, said that the GroundsFest team really wanted to extend their gratitude to all their exhibitors, partners and visitors who showed their support for the first event. “From the very start, we wanted GroundsFest to be an event for everyone and to be able to establish a real sense of community. Over the two days we’ve had sunshine, we’ve had rain showers, but more importantly we’ve had collaboration, built relationships, witnessed innovation at its finest and ultimately come together to celebrate the industry and have a great time with one another.

“The positive feedback has been overwhelming but we’re certainly not resting on our laurels. “We’re already planning how we can improve the event for 2024 by listening to every single piece of feedback and by analysing both the exhibitor and visitor surveys. “We’ll certainly be back with GroundsFest chapter two in September 2024 and we cannot wait to welcome you all again,” said Chris, who revealed that the two day attendance figure for unique visitors, excluding exhibitors, was 6,511. GroundsFest will be a week earlier next year on September 10 & 11, 2024 and while the organisers will be hoping for better weather next time around they will know that, whatever is thrown at them, they will still be able to put on an excellent couple of days. to the biggest issues that the grounds management industry faces. Designed to bring people together for the greater good of grounds, SALTEX’s comprehensive and extensive Learning LIVE programme for 2023 is now live on the exhibition’s website – www. saltex.org.uk/learning-live. Months in the making, all the industry’s hottest topics are covered across the three stages over two days. On the Spotlight Stage on Wednesday 1 November, the ‘Messi of mowing’ John Ledwidge, head of grounds and landscapes at Manchester City FC, Nick Taylor, managing director of Greycircle and Adrian Kay, York Racecourse Grounds Manager, host a discussion on skilful leadership best practice and the importance of team culture. How do you deliver a major sporting event? Grounds managers at England’s most iconic cricketing venues talk about that and overcoming the challenges in hosting this year’s Ashes tournament on the Main Stage. Visitors can also meet the team behind the Women’s Ashes’ pitch delivery. These female pioneers will discuss how they got involved in this initiative and how they’d like its legacy to help promote grounds management as a career option for women and girls. Also on Wednesday, attendees will get the chance to take part in an interactive panel discussion on the Main Stage with GMA consultant, Tim Nicholls, and the Rugby Football League’s, Pat Clusky. The topic of discussion will be the GMA’s newly launched Grounds Management Framework which offers new and existing grounds staff a clear career pathway aligned with the necessary tools and qualifications needed to improve pitch standards

and progress within the industry. On day two, the Main Stage is busy celebrating volunteer heroes. Wes Matthews from Cranfield FC & Luton Town FC, GMA award winner Dean Gibbons from Wantage Bowls Club and Liam Murgatroyd from Queensferry ARLFC talk about working around the day job, finding funding opportunities and making the allimportant budget spread further. Tony Hanson, Planet Mark Associate and Golf Environment Organisation Sustainability Associate, who is hosting a session on this subject says: “Water availability is changing – historically high personal consumption, population growth, climate change, increasing incidence of drought and flooding, over abstraction and pollution have all contributed to problems we now have to solve around water resource and quality. The leisure sector can protect future water sources and be part of the solution at SALTEX.” Speaking of climate change and what comes next, over on the Spotlight Stage on day one, an important audience participation event concerning where we were, where we are now and where we are going with concern to UK weather under the umbrella of a rapidly changing world is hosted by Jim Dale – senior meteorological consultant, British Weather Services. The Learning LIVE schedule this year brings visitors 34 sessions, with additional papers attacking the key issues for the grounds care industry of pay, career development, how to negotiate in the workplace and how to find out about the millions of pounds of grant funding available from sports clubs. HISTORY REWARDED

SALTEX’s history, along with the GMA’s work towards making sport possible, has made this the exhibition of choice for five of the UK’s National Governing Bodies (NGBs). Year round the GMA, Football Association (represented by Football Foundation), Sport England, England & Wales Cricket Board, Rugby Football League, and Rugby Football Union work collaboratively to improve pitches and upskill those in the industry. The NGBs also play a major role in the Learning LIVE education programme where they will discuss several burning topics relevant to their respective sports, from grassroots facility funding and workforce development to showcasing the work that has gone into the major sporting events this year.

NEW SOCIAL SPACE INTRODUCED

New for this year is The Clubhouse. Post-show feedback indicates that networking is the second biggest highlight for visitors attending the show and The Clubhouse will deliver an enhanced facility with a relaxed, licensed, social space on the busy show floor. With a bar, relaxed seating options and a private area called The Trophy Room, which can be booked for prearranged meetups, The Clubhouse offers visitors and exhibitors the ideal space to boost their network. Sarah Cunningham, director of commercial and events at the GMA, says: “Creating a space where visitors and exhibitors can relax, unwind, and build connections with old friends and new colleagues has been a priority following visitor and exhibitor feedback from the last two shows. Crucially, we wanted to create a space that means attendees

can sit down and catch-up without having to leave the show floor. “The Clubhouse will cater to these desires perfectly, offering attendees a comfortable place to sit down and a bar where they can purchase drinks and food at competitive prices. The Clubhouse is all about maximising the visitors’ experience and bringing the industry closer together.” With attendees coming from all backgrounds and levels of grounds care, including elite sport, estates and landscaping, parks, playgrounds, and education settings, visitors will have the chance to meet likeminded people and expand their network of grounds care colleagues. Last year’s show brought together over 8,300 visitors from 50 plus countries with the biggest names in the groundscare industry voicing their enthusiasm for SALTEX. } increase in the international interest with a 16 percent increase in international exhibitors attending the 2023 show from 2022. Visitor registrations also have a global feel with registrations from 39 countries. Statistically, this makes 2023 the most internationally recognised show in the grounds care sector. Of course, it helps that for any visitors coming from overseas, Birmingham is conveniently centrally located. Right next to the airport, the NEC is just a four-minute walk from Birmingham International railway station and for those driving, the NEC is in the centre of the UK’s motorway network with its ample parking and GMA members parking is subsidised for the duration of the event.

WHY SALTEX?

So, what’s the reason for sports turf management personnel from

TURF

around the world making the journey to SALTEX in November? Geoff Webb, CEO of the GMA, comments: “SALTEX isn’t just a show for the UK, it’s a show in the UK for the entire industry worldwide. Author of FIFA’s official handbook on pitch maintenance, Richard Hayden’s comments about the UK being the global leader in grounds management, are true. “The UK is 10 years more advanced than anywhere else in the world and has expertise like no other when it comes to sportsturf management. “He is absolutely right that ‘if you want to work in technology, you go to Silicon Valley and the UK is the Silicon Valley of turf’ – the UK and specifically SALTEX is where you go to learn and network with some of the greatest in the business.” The English grounds-management sector alone is valued at more than

£1bn and employs more than 27,000 people, with specialists in every area, from seed enthusiasts who can breed grasses that grow in the shade to scientists who develop chemicals to make grass greener. Representatives from all areas will be at SALTEX. The show is organised by the Grounds Management Association – the leading not-forprofit membership organisation representing grounds managers, grounds personnel, grounds maintenance managers, greenkeepers and all others involved in the management of sports turf, pitches, landscape, and amenity facilities in the UK. SALTEX takes place at Birmingham NEC on 1-2 November 2023. CAMPEY TURF CARE SYSTEMS STAND HO82 Campey Turf Care Systems is planning an exciting UK Road Tour in 2024 and Saltex is providing the platform for dealers and customers, to register your interest in attending a demo day in your area. For many years Campey has taken a huge number of machines across the water for various educational and sales tours throughout Europe. Most recently was an eight-country demonstration tour visiting 14 venues to provide industry-leading customer support and training. Now it is the turn of the UK! The key to the success of all the events is working with turf professionals to solve issues specific to their sport and conditions. For Campey Director Lee Morgado, this is the primary purpose of the in-person demos and is invaluable to what Campey offers. “Giving people detailed advice on issues specific to them is priceless, and the impact of it really can’t be overestimated. The challenges groundsmen and greenkeepers face in the UK can vary considerably, so to have the opportunity to talk through those issues can make a difference for them and us because we can learn and adapt from it,” said Lee. So, for this reason, Campey has chosen Saltex this year, not only to exhibit a selection of their extensive range of equipment, but to engage with industry professionals on the stand to discuss when and where Campey may be visiting their region. Anyone who registers and attends the road shows will have their name automatically put into a raffle to be held at each venue. The top prize is a visit to the Imants and Vredo Head offices in Holland with a factory tour to see how these flagship machines are manufactured, followed by traditional Dutch hospitality to make you feel welcome. }

DRAIN TALENT STAND F132 The award-winning, sustainable solution to optimal pitch moisture management will be on show this November, as DrainTalent make their return to SALTEX. Innovative and unique in its operation, DrainTalent continuously monitors both the moisture content within the profile and the current weather conditions to optimally balance soil conditions in realtime. The installation of a bi-directional, under-pitch drainage system is linked to the DrainTalent – a compact unit which can be safely stored indoors or outdoors, pitch-side. The fully automatic system will identify when it starts raining and will actively begin extracting superfluous water from the top layer. Together with managing moisture, it can also force air into the subsoil and up into the soil profile, creating conditions for stronger root growth and a more stable pitch, able to better withstand wear and tear. DrainTalent has proven revolutionary

to a number of elite football venues following installations at top-flight clubs across Europe, including FC Utrecht in The Netherlands. Together with the professional market, the promise of increased play hours and reduction in overall maintenance costs also make it a serious consideration for clubs at amateur or community level.

GKB STAND HO51 No trip to SALTEX is complete without a stop by the bright and bold stand of GKB Machines! This year, the stand has been redesigned to maximise visual impact and make space for a wide range of machinery from across GKB’s portfolio of maintenance solutions for natural, hybrid and synthetic surfaces. From the natural offering, particular highlights include the Deep Tine Aerator and GKB Sandspreader. The Sandspreader range features four models, offering hopper capacities between 1m3 and 4m3 to cater for fine turf, sports turf and contractor applications. The material is transported from the hopper to the adjustable metering valve via an internal conveyor belt, before being efficiently and evenly distributed via the double disc hydraulic spinners. On synthetics, one important fact to consider when it comes to both the usage and maintenance of a surface is minimising the migration of infill into the environment. With the use of a synthetic pitch, infill will naturally tend to disperse outwards towards the pitch perimeters which is where effective maintenance will be needed, to ensure infill is returned to the higher use areas where it is required for surface stability and playability. The easiest way to achieve this is via brushing, for which GKB have a range of options. The 4m wide Brush is ideal for quick surface coverage, with hydraulically foldable wings for convenient transportation and storage, while the GKB Quick-Brush can be configured with a range of optional extras including a rake or rubber finishing mat to suit individual requirements.

The grinder converts to a precision bottom blade grinder in under a minute. Variable cylinder speeds in spin mode for increased operator control. Automatic docking mode for the grinding head, should you wish to stop the machine mid-operation, again giving the operator greater control and flexibility over the grinding process. A countdown to indicate the number of cycles completed on full spin grinding allows the operator to take that coffee break without losing sequence. Upgrades have also been made within the InfiniApp, which continues to evolve as a result of customer feedback. Several new features have been added to the app in recent months, including a new fleet management function which has proven to be a big hit with customers managing large Infinicut fleets. Another update being rolled out by the team is their state-of-the-art auto-slow down feature. If it is leaf collection on the agenda, then Vanmac will also be showcasing a number of other solutions in the form of the towable SU60 vacuum collector and the BL960 blower. As the largest blower in the Trilo range, the BL960 requires a 50hp tractor, has a capacity of 385m3/min and delivers an airspeed of 75m/s which makes it a popular choice for large areas. From the Progressive portfolio of trailed and mounted rotary mowers, the TDR-15 will be the focus. With a combined cutting width of just over 4.5m across the three decks, the versatile TDR-15 combines efficiency with superior cut quality and presentation thanks to the high-tip speed blades and full-width, heavy-duty rollers which deliver an impeccable stripe.

STAND DO90 Tyre-Line are pleased to be back exhibiting at this year’s SALTEX show at the NEC Birmingham, bringing their extensive tyre knowledge and product portfolio to the UK’s Premier Turf Management exhibition. They will be exhibiting their extensive range of Carlstar (formerly known as Carlisle) Lawn, Garden & Golf and ATV/ UTV & SxS tyres, the Compass range of High Speed Trailer tyres, associated wheels and accessories, speciality ATV/UTV tyres from ITP and puncture resistant Lawn, Garden & Golf tyres from Wanda. They will also be showcasing the revolutionary Michelin Tweel Airless Radial range of tyres for UTV machines, Golf Buggies and ZTR Mowers which are now available to order for a rapidly expanding range of machinery fitments directly from Tyre-Line’s Aftermarket division.

VANMAC STAND KO70 A stop by the Vanmac stand is one that can’t be missed… literally! Retaking their place on K070 directly in-front of the show entrance, the stand will be jam-packed with equipment from leading brands including Progressive and Trilo. Particular highlights promise to be the multi-functional Trilo M4 collector and

WEEDINGTECH STAND EO57 A hugely busy summer season for the team at Weedingtech will culminate in them returning to the Show, showcasing their world-leading commercial herbicidefree weed control solution - Foamstream. Delivered by a range of patented machinery, Foamstream combines hot water and a biodegradable foam, made from natural plant oils and sugars, to offer an organically certified and herbicide-free alternative to weed and moss control. The hot water is ‘insulated’ by the foam, ensuring that the heat penetrates the waxy outer layer of the leaf, travels down the stem and into the roots, killing or severely damaging the plant. In addition to eradicating the plant, Foamstream also sterilises surrounding seeds and spores, helping to reduce future weed growth – reducing treatment cycles and overhead costs. The all-natural ingredients also mean it is safe for applications around people, animals and sensitive environments making it a viable solution for, schools, local authorities parks and housing associations. 2023 has also seen a surge in sales at top-flight sports turf facilities, including a number of Premier League football clubs, most recently Chelsea FC, using Foamstream to control vegetation on pathways, car parks and other hard surfaces. The exponential rise in demand for

Foamstream systems has seen the growth of Weedingtech’s rental offering, with customers citing the benefits in accessibility and eliminating the sometimes lengthy and complex capital procurement process. Foamstream’s rental package includes the latest highspecification machinery and full technical training for a set weekly rate.
