Appreciating Jane’s Aussie perspective

I had a chat with a remarkable woman for this issue. In the interests of full disclosure I have to admit that I didn’t fly to Australia on behalf of all you Landscaping Matters readers. No, Jane Gilpin and I spoke over Teams, but our chat was no less compelling for not taking the 23-hour flight to the other side of the world!

Jane is from Lancaster, here in the UK, but moved to Australia in 2012 and began indulging her passion for gardening and garden design. Her five-acre garden, at an altitude of 1,000 metres, was a blank canvas when she started, but the results of her work have been stunning.

Living and working in the wilds of New South Wales is not for the faint hearted and, as you will read, her encounter with two-metre long, highly venomous snakes would put many off. But Jane is not one to let such trifling matters get in her way and her goal of creating a habitat to benefit all living creatures in her garden has resulted in fewer close encounters of the slithery kind!

Is investing in services of a garden designer worth it?

by AGATA HENDERSON Gardens are widely recognised for their positive impact on mental and physical wellbeing. From reducing stress to supporting mobility and encouraging gentle exercise, the benefits of outdoor spaces are well documented.

As an industry, however, we are increasingly seeing gardens not just as lifestyle assets, but as significant financial investments.

With landscaping and construction costs continuing to rise, clients are asking more searching questions: Is professional garden design worth the fee?

Does it add value to the property?

And does it actually reduce the cost and risk of the build?

From a trade perspective, these questions are not theoretical, they directly affect quoting accuracy, project efficiency, and profitability.

UNDERSTANDING GARDEN DESIGN FEES

Professional garden design fees account for approximately 10–20% of the total landscaping budget, inclusive of labour, materials, planting, and waste removal. The percentage varies depending on project scale. Medium-sized gardens in the £20,000–£30,000 range typically sit at the higher end (15–20%), while larger, higher-value projects often drop closer to 10%, despite significantly increased complexity and design input.

Importantly, this fee should not be viewed as an added cost, but as a riskmanagement and efficiency tool. A well-developed design package aligns expectations early, reduces uncertainty, and provides a clear framework for both pricing and delivery.

DESIGN AND PROPERTY VALUE

As a garden designer covering West London, to assess the broader value of professional

garden design, I consulted a local independent estate agent alongside several London-based landscapers.

Anthony Coyle, of Coyle Dowling Estate Agency in Ealing, notes that a well-designed garden can materially affect buyer perception: “A cohesive, well-maintained garden creates an immediate impression of quality and care. Buyers increasingly view gardens as an extension of the living space, and a purposefully designed outdoor area can attract stronger offers – particularly in competitive urban markets.”

While garden design alone won’t rescue an overpriced property, it can strengthen market appeal and support higher perceived value and according to professional sources, well designed and landscaped garden can add even 20% of the value of the house, often more in urban areas.

THE IMPACT ON BUILD COSTS

More significantly for the trade, the presence of a detailed design directly affects build pricing.

Every professional landscaper consulted confirmed that, for a typical urban garden involving hard landscaping, layout changes, planting, and fencing, quotes increase by 10–15% when clients pro-vide no scaled drawings or remain undecided on materials such as paving, cladding, or fencing to reflect time spent resolving unknowns, pricing risk contingencies, and accounting for potential design changes mid-build.

George from Daizy Gardens, with over 20 years’ experience in West and North London, describes working with a garden designer as a clear commercial advantage: “A complete design pack removes ambiguity. All decisions are made upfront, the client is committed, and my risk is reduced. I typically quote around 10% less on these projects because I avoid unpaid hours preparing speculative quotes – which, frankly, lead nowhere about half the time.”

Tomasz, owner of Green Space Building Contractor Ltd in Ealing, echoes this: “With a finished design, I don’t have to spend days developing layouts or sourcing options.

Materials and quantities are specified, changes are minimised, and I can price accurately. On average, I quote 10–15% less on professionally designed projects.”

Karol of Garden Spirit, working across West London and Surrey, adds that design input is especially valuable on modest budgets: “Good design optimises space and identifies cost-effective solutions. With drawings and specifications ready, I can start immediately and finish efficiently. I usually reduce my quote by around 10%.”

Marcin of Marcin Gardens, covering Twickenham, Chiswick, and Kingston, estimates direct savings of £1,500–£3,000 on a £30,000 project due to reduced estimating time and fewer on-site changes.

WHEN A DESIGNER ISN’T NECESSARY

It’s important to be clear: not every project requires a garden designer. If the brief is limited to re-placing a patio or fence on a like-for-like basis, the design fee may be better spent engaging a more skilled contractor.

However, where clients are seeking long-term value, improved functionality, cohesive aesthetics, and a garden that integrates seamlessly with the property, professional design consistently proves its worth.

CONCLUSION

From a trade perspective, garden design is not a luxury, but rather a strategic investment that reduces risk, improves efficiency, and leads to better outcomes for clients, designers, and landscapers alike.

Showcasing APL designers and landscapers at major flower shows The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has revealed what to expect from the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) and its members during the upcoming flower show and garden festival season.

The APL, which comprises almost 400 designers, landscapers and professional gardeners, will showcase gardens designed and built by members at eight key shows throughout the year.

The season kicked off with the Harrogate Spring Flower Show, the first major event in the national gardening calendar.

The APL team will also provide free advice through Landscape and Design clinics at most shows, where visitors can attend regular drop-in sessions and have their questions answered.

Highlights for the 2026 show season include: • ‘Over the Garden Fence’ at the Harrogate Spring Flower Show.

Compact gardens designed by APL members to demonstrate getting the most out of a small urban garden space.

• The APL Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) Garden at the

Harrogate Spring Flower Show, designed to manage rainfall naturally by allowing water to soak into the ground, rather than running off into drains.

• The world-famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where numerous APL members are involved in designing and building almost twenty of the show gardens.

• Marking a decade of APL Avenue at BBC Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham with three outstanding APL member gardens to view.

• The headline show garden ‘The Evolution Garden’ at BBC Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham, built by APL member Design It Landscapes.

• The Macmillan Cancer Research garden at RHS Badminton, created by APL member Artisan Landscapes.

• The RHS Royal Legacy Garden at RHS Sandringham, designed

by Catherine MacDonald from APL member Landform Consultants and built by APL member Gadd Brothers Trees & Landscapes.

• A collaborative apprentice garden at BBC Gardeners’

World Autumn Fair at Audley End, where APL members will build a showcase garden whilst mentoring apprentices.

Behind the scenes of Chelsea 2026 at Creepers Nursery As preparations ramp up for RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026, we caught up with Michael Buck, Head of Horticulture at Creepers Nursery, to get an insight into what goes on behind the scenes in the lead up to one of the most prestigious events in the horticultural calendar.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR CHELSEA THIS YEAR?

“As ever, it’s seeing the designs and visions come to life on a global stage.

The complexity of the builds and the technicalities involved in growing plants to such specific requirements is always exciting. And, of course, there’s always a lot of interest in the trees that have been selected too.”

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES?

“As we head into the home straight, the weather has definitely been a challenge. We’ve gone from 25 degrees to frost within weeks, which makes things unpredictable. The mild winter has also pushed growth on quite a distance, so a lot of what we do comes down to instinct.”

“This year we’ve welcomed Carey Garden Design into our nursery for Chelsea. We usually cap at two contract grows, so bringing in a third has added another layer of complexity, particularly in terms of genera and requirements. The weather adds its own challenges too, but the designers we’re working with are fantastic.”

“For 2026, it started back in August when the preliminary plant lists arrived. That’s where the process of refining, adding and discussing choices begins. From there, we’re often travelling across Europe to source trees. Before you know it, it’s Christmas and everything is in place, waiting for spring.”

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GROWER AND DESIGNER?

WHAT DOES THE LEAD UP TO THE SHOW LOOK LIKE ON THE NURSERY?

ARE THERE ANY STANDOUT PLANT VARIETIES YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT?

HOW LONG HAS CREEPERS NURSERY BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW?

“A Chelsea grow can’t happen, in my opinion, without a strong relationship between the designer and the nursery. Designers place a lot of trust in us to deliver their vision through plants. On the flip side, we need to be able to have honest and sometimes difficult conversations about what is and isn’t possible.”

“I really enjoy growing Hordeum jubatum. It’s a beautifully elegant grass with soft lilac hues that move in even the slightest breeze, adding another dimension to a

WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING IN PLANT CHOICES FOR CHELSEA 2026?

“From what we’re growing, there’s definitely a move towards drier, prairie style planting. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out across the show, but 2026 is set to be another great year.”

LOOKING AHEAD TO CHELSEA 2026

With thousands of plants to prepare, tight timelines to meet and the unpredictability of the British weather to contend with, the run up to Chelsea is no small task. Yet for Creepers Nursery, it’s this challenge that defines the experience.

GroundsFest Academy goes behind the scenes at Lord’s Selected attendees from GroundsFest Academy events have been given the opportunity to experience a truly unforgettable day at Lord’s Cricket Ground, widely regarded as the Home of Cricket.

The exclusive experience day offered delegates a behind-the-scenes look at elite-level turf management within one of the world’s most iconic sporting venues. Hosted by Lord’s Head Groundsman Karl McDermott, the day combined practical learning, networking, and insight into the precision and planning required to maintain world-class cricket surfaces.

Throughout the morning, attendees

explored every aspect of stadium turf management, including access and zoning logistics, matchday preparation, wicket and outfield construction, drainage and irrigation systems, grass species selection, and managing weather impacts.

Delegates were also given access to machinery, equipment, and operational areas rarely seen by the public, alongside a personal tour of the famous square and outfield.

For Peter Dawson from Berkshire College of Agriculture, the visit was both inspiring and educational.

“Obviously, Lord’s is iconic – the home of cricket. It’s been fantastic.

Karl took us around the ground, showed us the pitches and explained the techniques behind preparation and renovation. I really enjoyed learning about how he works with his staff and apprentices, particularly the responsibility they’re given. Each member of staff prepares their own pitch for matches, which I thought was a brilliant way to help people learn and develop confidence.

“It’s definitely something I can take back into my apprenticeship role at BCA.” Mark Morgan from Belper Meadows Cricket Club described the experience as a “bucket list” moment.

TO ACTUALLY WALK ONTO THE SQUARE AND SEE HOW EVERYTHING OPERATES BEHIND THE SCENES WAS INCREDIBLE.” “When you hear the word Lord’s, you immediately think of the bestlooking ground in the world and the home of cricket. To actually walk onto the square and see how everything operates behind the scenes was incredible. We learnt so much about renovations, pitch planning, wetting agents, and the processes they use throughout the season. Karl was brilliant and really open with sharing his knowledge. It’s also fantastic what GroundsFest is doing because there aren’t many opportunities like this available to everyday groundspeople.”

For Greenkeeper Garry Letheren, the experience highlighted how knowledge can transfer across

different sectors of the industry.

“You see Lord’s on television all the time, but to come here and understand what goes into maintaining it is something completely different. Even though I work in golf, there are still so many practices and ideas you can take away and adapt. Karl showed us everything from pitch preparation stages to machinery and long-term planning across the year. It was incredibly insightful and a fantastic opportunity to actually walk on the outfield and see things up close.”

GroundsFest Academy Director of Education Bradley Tennant said the experience days were created to give something extra back to the industry.

“The whole reason behind these days was to create new opportunities and give more back to the industry.

We already provide free educational events, but these experience days allow selected attendees to step inside environments they may never normally get to see. Venues like Lord’s are iconic, and for many people this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s not just about seeing the venue; it’s about learning from experienced professionals, sharing stories, networking, and taking ideas back into the workplace. The feedback we’ve had has been incredibly positive and we’ll definitely be doing more experience days in the future.”

NEWS Successful GroundsFest Academy event with Mansfield Sand

Building knowledge from the ground up – literally

GroundsFest Academy has delivered another highly successful educational event with its Understanding Profiles: Sands, Soils, Rootzones and Gravels day, in partnership with Mansfield Sand.

Designed as a practical, end-to-end learning experience, the free, CPD accredited event brought together professionals from across the industry to deepen their understanding of the materials that form the foundation of natural turf sports surfaces.

From the outset, the day focused on building knowledge from the ground up. Attendees explored where sand comes from, how particle shape and grading influence performance, and why not all sands are suitable for sport. Sessions then moved into more applied topics, including

sand specification, interpreting lab reports, and understanding the balance between drainage and stability across different sports such as football, rugby, golf and cricket.

A key theme throughout the day was confidence. By breaking down complex topics such as soil texture, organic matter content, and the differences between natural topsoil and manufactured rootzones, the event aimed to give attendees the knowledge they need to make better decisions in their own roles.

Discussions around fibre sands and reinforced rootzones also challenged common misconceptions, offering practical insights into stability, divoting and recovery.

One of the standout elements of the day was the behind-the-scenes quarry

tour at Mansfield Sand. Delegates were given a rare opportunity to see the full journey of sand production, from extraction through to washing, drying, screening and final quality control.

For many attendees, the quarry tour was a genuine eye-opener.

Joshua Foster of RC Solutions Pitch Care Ltd explained how it changed his perspective: “We went to the Mansfield quarry, and they showed us how they produce the sand from what you see in the ground to the finished product. I learnt that not all sand comes from sandstone – it actually comes out of the ground as sand. That was something I didn’t know before.”

Importantly, the day wasn’t just about theory. Attendees were encouraged to think about how they could apply what they had learned.

Joshua added: “We’re already thinking about how we do things differently, like whether we apply sand before aeration rather than after. It’s about taking that knowledge back and improving what we do.”

The diversity of attendees also played a big role in the day’s success. Grounds professionals from football clubs, racecourses, cricket clubs, colleges and contractors all came together, creating a valuable environment for shared learning and networking.

Daniel Cooper, Clerk of the Course at Haydock Park Racecourse, emphasised the importance of understanding the materials he works with.

“We use rootzones, sand and fibresand, so we wanted to know more about the product we’re buying,” he said.

“The quarry tour was really interesting, seeing how it all gets processed before it reaches us. The key takeaway for me is to always get the tech sheet and understand exactly what product you’re using.”

Similarly, Stephen Sargent of Derby County Football Club found the experience both insightful and engaging. “To see the different sands we use was really useful,” he said. “It’s my first event like this and I’ll definitely be doing more.”

For others, the event reinforced the value of continuous learning. Rod Heyhoe of Lightcliffe Cricket Club, who has spent decades in the

game, summed it up perfectly: “You are never too old to learn. You pick something up every time. Events like this are so important because it’s about increasing knowledge and talking to like-minded people.”

The welcoming and accessible nature of the day was also widely praised.

Tammy Tidmarsh of Long Rake Spar described it as “fantastic” and highlighted how valuable it was to learn about specifications and standards in a practical setting. “Without events like this, we wouldn’t be able to learn more about the products, the standards and the processes.

It’s vital,” she said.

As the day concluded with a Q&A and key takeaways session, one message was clear: understanding what lies beneath the surface is essential for success in turf management. By combining expert-led sessions with real-world experiences, GroundsFest Academy continues to provide valuable opportunities for education, collaboration and professional development.

With more events planned throughout the year, this hands-on approach to learning is proving to be a winning formula for the industry.

New Hunter MCC controller for large, complex irrigation projects The new Hunter MCC Controller has officially launched in the UK, introducing a powerful and scalable irrigation control solution designed for large-scale projects.

Available from KAR UK, the MCC brings wireless, wide-area coverage and advanced flow management to the commercial irrigation market.

Designed to expand the limits of irrigation control, the MCC delivers wireless, widearea coverage for large-scale projects while maintaining affordability. Positioned as a medium commercial controller, it bridges the gap between high-end performance and practical value, making it ideal for expansive landscapes, sports facilities, commercial estates and public-sector sites.

At its core, the MCC combines the powerful brain and operating features of the ACC2 Controller

with the proven, reliable internal components of the ICC2 Controller. The result is a versatile and cost-effective controller capable of managing between 8 and 108 stations (with up to 54 conventional stations), offering exceptional flexibility across a wide range of site requirements.

One of the MCC’s standout features is its ability to support multiple output types simultaneously. Users can command conventional outputs, EZDS two-wire decoders and Wireless Valve Links all from the same controller. The MCC also offers a menudriven, multi-language interface that simplifies programming and daily operation. Whether used as a standalone controller or integrated into a connected network, it provides full functionality and streamlined control for large, demanding sites.

For those seeking centralised management, the MCC uses the same communication modules as the ACC2, enabling cloudbased control via the Centralus Irrigation Management Platform, as well as compatibility with Hunter 360 Software and other SCADA or automation systems.

DLF Colour Boost brings burst of colour to Lees Hall Golf Club

Lees Hall Golf Club are celebrating the success of their growing wildflower initiative, developed in conjunction with DLF Seeds. Led by Head Greenkeeper Ian Whitehead and Assistant Greenkeeper Danny Tozzi, the club is now entering its third year of using mixtures from the Colour Boost range which has added areas of high visual impact and a real ‘boost’ to biodiversity around the course.

Established in 1907 as a ninehole course before expanding to

18 holes in 1921, the picturesque parkland course at Lees Hall is set atop rolling hills with panoramic views across the city of Sheffield.

Adding to the visual merit for the past two years are bursts of colour delivered by the club’s newly created wildflower areas. “I first met with DLF’s Stuart Yarwood at BTME 2024 who suggested we start with a small-scale trial to see how we got on” explains Ian. “We opted for Floral Carpet from the Colour Boost range which

provided a bold, but low-growing display which all the members enjoyed on their way to the first tee.” Along with something that would not interrupt lines of sight or play, Ian’s other request was slightly more out of the ordinary!

“My allegiance to Sheffield Wednesday meant I couldn’t bear the thought of a red floral display on the course – DLF were more than happy to oblige, tweaking the mixture to incorporate more blues and whites.”

Under the careful management of assistant Danny Tozzi, the success of the trial plot saw the expansion of the programme into new areas in year two. Danny takes up the story, “We continued with Floral Carpet and then, with the guidance of DLF’s Ben Morgan, introduced the Honey Bee & Butterfly mixture into some new areas. Despite some slightly challenging weather conditions, we were impressed with not only the way the new sowing performed, but also how much re-growth and self-seeding we saw in the plots from year one.”

As well as visual appeal, boosting ecology has been a major driver for the project. “There’s no doubt that since we established these wildflower areas we’ve seen an increase in pollinators, birds and wildlife in general enjoying these spaces” Danny adds.

Buoyed by the success, five additional wildflower areas are earmarked for sowing in 2026.

“We’ll certainly be continuing with Floral Carpet and the Honey Bee & Butterfly mixtures, along with Carnival which have all delivered exactly what we’ve hoped to date.” Danny concludes, “Everyone is excited to see even more colour on the course.”

A

drian Gray describes his work as “performance art in a very pure form,” and if you’ve ever watched him do it, that makes complete sense.

He takes rocks - limestone, granite, sandstone, flint – and builds them into compositions that seem to flatly refuse gravity. A boulder resting on a pebble at a near horizontal angle. A column of stones that has no business standing.

Before he fixes and installs a sculpture permanently, he films the whole balancing process, so the owner gets their own record of the impossible.

He started out on beaches along the Devon and Dorset coast back in 2002, making pieces at dawn or dusk when the wind dropped, then photographing them before the tide came in and took them. Those early images got a lot of attention – admiration, scrutiny, and more than a few accusations of digital manipulation. But they weren’t, just rocks, patience, and a remarkably precise eye for where two surfaces will actually hold. That core discipline hasn’t changed but the scale nowadays has. Since 2015 he’s been working with a 35 tonne crane, balancing boulders that weigh several tons apiece. His piece “Trust in Nature” – two Bodmin granite boulders, over five metres tall, 14 tonnes between them, sat on Bodmin Moor for a week, got filmed for the BBC, then went to RHS Rosemoor

and Chelsea Flower Show 2016.

There’s an obvious comparison with Andy Goldsworthy – art made from nature, placed in nature, that makes you look at the natural world differently. But where Goldsworthy typically lets his work decay and disappear, Gray’s installations stay. He fixes each piece exactly in its balanced position and installs it to commission, indoors or out, in private gardens or public spaces. Every sculpture comes with a video of its creation, which isn’t a gimmick, it’s genuinely the thing that makes the work make sense.

You need to have seen it happen.

The appetite for that kind of considered presence in outdoor spaces has grown quite a lot. Gardens aren’t seasonal overflow anymore.

People are treating them as rooms, thinking carefully about what they want those spaces to feel like and do.

The question’s shifted from “where does the furniture go?” to something more thoughtful. Naturalistic planting, water, sculpture; the ambition has moved upmarket and stayed there, filtering down from the grand country gardens that set the agenda at Chelsea each year into suburban plots and city courtyards.

Gray’s work fits that mood well.

He talks about his sculptures as symbolic of efforts to keep the planet in balance, but honestly, you don’t need the ecological framing to feel

the effect. A balanced stone sculpture creates stillness. It draws your eye without insisting on it. There’s also the question of provenance, which matters more now than it used to.

Gray’s interested in shapes, not in where a rock came from or how much it weighs. Every piece is unique, and every piece comes with a record of its making. Twenty years ago, a garden sculpture was more likely to be a reconstituted stone urn from a garden centre than something with an actual artist behind it. That’s changed. People want to know what they have, and Gray’s work with the stillness, the craft, the story is exactly what a more thoughtful generation of garden owners is after.

Wildflower Co. brings biodiversity to new Memorial Garden

Wildflower Co. is proud to have contributed to the newly unveiled Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Garden in Regent’s Park – a beautifully designed two-acre space dedicated to the memory of Queen Elizabeth II. The garden, which officially opened in April, celebrates both reflection and renewal. Inspired by the late Queen’s favourite plants, the planting scheme creates a tranquil, immersive environment for visitors.

A key feature of the project is approximately 2,000m² of Wildflower Turf, grown to order and supplied to Blakedown Landscapes.

Developed in collaboration with renowned planting designer Noel Kingsbury and Katharina Erne,

and supported by soil specialist Tim O’Hare, the scheme overcame complex site conditions to deliver a thriving, biodiverse habitat.

The result is a remarkable achievement in sustainability, delivering an extraordinary 184% biodiversity net gain. With the site previously occupied by greenhouses, the transformation highlights the powerful role that science-led wildflower solutions can play in restoring nature.

Encircling the central flower bed is a poignant quote from Queen Elizabeth II: “We all need to get the balance right between action and reflection.

From trailer deliveries to industry leader: George Davies Turf marks 25 years supporting the UK landscaping sector O

ne of the UK’s largest independent turf suppliers is celebrating 25 years in business, marking a significant milestone for a company that has grown alongside the evolving needs of landscapers, contractors and garden professionals.

Founded in 2001 by Buckinghamshire entrepreneur George Davies, George Davies Turf & Stone began as a small-scale venture operating from his father’s farm in Olney. In its earliest days, the farmyard itself acted as the company’s first depot, with turf delivered, stored and collected directly from the site.

The business was born out of a need to diversify. After university, George returned to work on the family farm and began researching alternative crops, but the high upfront investment made this unviable. Recognising the farm’s proximity to the rapidly expanding Milton Keynes area, he identified an opportunity in turf supply. While growing turf himself wasn’t feasible, a chance meeting with Scenic Blue Turf led him to invest his entire £15,000 savings into a franchise.

The ability to use his father’s land and infrastructure provided a practical launchpad, allowing the business to get off the ground with minimal overheads.

Today, the business delivers more than 1.4 million rolls of turf and over 13,000 bags of landscaping materials annually and has established itself as a trusted supplier to both trade professionals and high-profile home projects across Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire.

Reflecting on the company’s anniversary, George Davies credits consistent service standards and close relationships with landscaping professionals as key drivers of growth.

George said: “From day one, the goal was simple: supply the highestquality turf, deliver it fresh and make life easier for customers. Early on, I knew that because we weren’t

growing the turf ourselves, we had to stand out through service. That focus has enabled us to grow with the industry while staying true to our roots. Those roots are very much on the farm; having that base in the early days gave me the opportunity to build something from scratch.”

Scaling operations to meet industry demand What began as a one-man operation using a passenger car and trailer has developed into a multi-millionpound business operating from dual bases in Olney and St Albans.

In its earliest days, the business was built on hard graft. George handled every aspect himself, from unloading deliveries into the farmyard to handballing up to 25 tonnes of turf a day.

Initial deliveries were made with every roll loaded and unloaded by hand. Customers would often collect directly from the farmyard, with a simple honesty box system in place, reflecting the informal, trust-based nature of the business at the time.

As demand increased, he invested in a 7.5-tonne Mercedes 811D lorry, significantly increasing delivery capacity, although George was still manually unloading turf on site.

George’s father also supported

operations as a back-up lorry driver during this period. This handson support helped the business transition from a farm-based sideline into a more structured delivery operation capable of serving a growing trade customer base.

The company now runs a fleet of 8 heavy goods vehicles equipped with forklift trucks, enabling efficient site deliveries and supporting the rapid turnaround required for fresh turf installation.

A key turning point came in 2003 when the business rebranded from Scenic Blue Turf to George Davies Turf. The same year saw the introduction of its first HGV, finished in a distinctive bright red, a colour that has since become synonymous with the brand, enabling deliveries of up to 720 rolls at a time.

Maintaining tight delivery windows has been central to the company’s model, with two-hour delivery slots helping landscapers manage labour, scheduling and installation quality.

In 2025, the business moved into new offices to support continued expansion and operational efficiency, helping the team handle growing demand and improve day-to-day operations.

George explains: “Timing is everything with turf. Investing in logistics, technology and facilities has allowed us to maintain reliability at scale, which is critical for professional landscapers working to tight project deadlines.”

Diversification and digital innovation Over the past decade, George Davies Turf has expanded its offering beyond turf to become a broader landscaping materials supplier, including topsoil, composite decking, artificial grass, seed and paving products.

Landscapers are increasingly looking for suppliers who can provide multiple materials from a single delivery, helping reduce time on site and simplify project logistics.

The acquisition of Landscape

Supplies Herts (formerly St Albans Stone) strengthened the company’s position as a one-stop shop for landscaping professionals, adding natural stone and aggregates to its portfolio.

Digital innovation has also played a role in improving customer experience, with the launch of a dedicated ordering app aimed at simplifying procurement and improving speed for busy contractors.

George continues: “Our industry is becoming more time-sensitive and technology-driven. We’ve focused on building systems that reduce friction for our customers so they can focus on delivering great projects.”

Supporting industry and

community through CSR initiatives Alongside commercial growth, George Davies Turf has increasingly embedded corporate social responsibility into its operations.

Recent initiatives include supplying premium turf free of charge to Hertfordshire Zoo to support new animal habitats, demonstrating how specialist landscaping materials can contribute to conservation projects and animal welfare.

Closer to home, the business maintains strong links with the local community, including involvement in the historic Olney Pancake Race, reflecting the company’s commitment to the town where the business first began.

As George explains: “Landscaping is about improving environments, whether that’s a domestic garden, a commercial space or a conservation project. Supporting initiatives that align with that purpose feels like a natural extension of what we do.”

A changing industry and a forward-looking future As the landscaping sector continues to evolve, George believes suppliers must adapt to increasing demand for efficiency, reliability and integrated product ranges.

George continues: “We’ve seen a shift towards customers wanting complete solutions rather than individual materials. Our growth has been about anticipating those needs while maintaining the personalised service that independent suppliers are known for.”

As the company celebrates its 25th anniversary, George says the focus remains firmly on future growth, innovation and strengthening partnerships with landscaping professionals.

study by Statista revealed the degree of urbanisation in the UK amounted to just under 85% in 2024, substantially reducing the number of green spaces and resultant biodiversity possibilities. Consequently, utilising sustainable practices and ensuring healthy plant life across the myriad cities across the UK shouldn’t just be a consideration but a necessity.

The UK’s substantial population growth is expediting the need for increased urbanised spaces. While this is understandable, we risk eradicating so much of the green and wonderous land we have available to us and endangering some of the incredible flora and fauna the UK is known for.

Conversely, aluminium landscape edging offers a more sustainable and natural solution; one that’s hugely effective at enhancing biodiversity, creating habitats and ensuring more reliable soil structure.

THE CREATION OF DEFINED HABITATS

The delineation of boundaries between different green spaces through the implementation of landscape edging, such as AluExcel, offers a hugely effective method of micro-ecosystem management.

Intentionally separating environments is critical in the maintenance of plant health and the encouragement of beneficial pollinators within the designated areas without the risk of invasive species taking over.

Marking a milestone year for the Guildford-based company, The Outdoor Room celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025.

The occasion was highlighted by multiple accolades, including recognition at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the prestigious Grand Award at the BALI National Landscape Awards.

Towards the end of the year, founder David Dodd was approached by Steve Etheridge – owner of Esse Landscapes – to explore a potential acquisition.

Founded by Etheridge in 2003, Esse Landscapes has created over 200 gardens and been honoured with a collection of industry awards over the last two decades.

It was this stature and the two company’s similarity in values that peaked Dodd’s interest, as he comments: “I’ve always admired the ethos and culture of Esse Landscapes and many of their company values were the same as The Outdoor Room’s.”

He notes that the combined skill sets

of the management team, craftsmen and designers will continue to push The Outdoor Room to new heights.

Adding that with 70% of The Outdoor Room’s work coming through designers and architectures, and the remaining work being in-house design and build.

While Esse’s opposite model of over 70% of its work being design and build

being directly for the client, Dodd said that “the match was perfect.”

Etheridge’s decision to take a step back led to the initial conversation with Dodd, with the former saying: “The agreement ensures continuity of employment for the entire Esse team, alongside the opportunity to be part of a larger and increasingly dynamic business.”

Jane Gilpin enjoys a wonderful life in Australia, far away from where she grew up in the north west of England. As Scott MacCallum found, it is not without its perils.

M

usic legend Sting once wrote and sang about an Englishman in New York, the soft Geordie tones, which made him such a legendary performer, making it one of his best known pieces of work.

It may be that there is a natural follow-up for him, just waiting to be written – an Englishwoman in New South Wales.

Jane Gilpin, originally from Lancaster, in the north west of England, now lives and works in

Armidale, New South Wales, Australia, as a garden designer. Her own five acre garden, 1,000 metres above sea level, mere scrubland with a few big old gum trees (eucalyptus) when the Gilpin family moved in, now offering inspiration for her own designs and for the many people who attend her workshops.

And, if Sting were ever to come across Jane he too would find inspiration, in his case for the lyrics to his follow-up to his eponymous 1987 recording.

For example, for this former nurse, who grew up enjoying the outdoors and Lancaster’s quintessentially English, Williamson’s Park, finding herself in the following terrifying situation could be the basis for a Sting song – similar in a way to “Don’t stand so close to me”.

“Last October I was in the back of our chicken house and when I turned around there was this brown snake in there with me. It was about two metres long and had come out of a rat hole in the floor.”

Jane was trapped for a harrowing 15 minutes, fearing that her time may have come. Indeed, if there was any solace to be taken at all, it was the fact that the snake in question, an Eastern Brown Snake, is only the second most venomous in the world. So, it could have been worse… but not much.

Eventually she was able to extricate herself and a call to the local snake catcher saw this particular intruder removed to a safe and distant location.

Eastern Brown Snakes are a protected species, so any Crocodile Dundee-like “Call that a knife” heroics are very much frowned upon.

It may seem lacking in originality to begin our story about Jane’s

life and career on such a cliched Aussie outback note, but does tie in with her design philosophy.

Jane is an advocate for wildlife friendly, biodiverse, naturalistic gardens and she found that as she developed her garden, improving the soil conditions and introducing natural habitat, the visitations to the residential side of the site from the likes of her Eastern Brown Snake friend dropped.

In the early days it had been around two encounters a week. Can you imagine!

“We now have a lot of wildlife in our garden but it tends to stay away from the house. I try to advocate that approach to other people. For me it was a case of ‘Oh, hang on! I think we can all live together’. Although I do think people thought I was a bit of a quirky English person!” she confessed.

She is always thinking about how best to encourage and help the flora and the fauna.

“When I am designing gardens I’ll always include a water element,” she explained.

“The birds really rely, as does all wildlife, on people keeping their water bowls topped up. So that’s really important to me,” she added.

“I found that in England, you’d have perhaps two or three birds flitting in out of your garden over the course of a day, whereas here you’ll have a huge flock which will just turn up, be here for an hour and then disappear again.”

And those birds are a little different to those we find in the UK. “We’ve got sulphur-crested cockatoos. They’re big birds, and very destructive. e also have lots of parrots and kookaburras. It’s really quite cool,” said Jane, who has lived in the home with her husband and two sons since 2012.

The family also has a resident Satin Bowerbird, famed for their complicated and colourful mating dances, which has lived in the garden for around eight years.

Although she embarked on a career in nursing, eventually becoming a Ward Sister in an Oncology Unit, the love of nature and }

} gardens was always there for her.

“I grew up in a small terraced house and ours was the only one with plant pots and hanging baskets outside the front door,” recalled Jane, while revealing that as a child her favourite book was The Secret Garden.

It was the move to Australia which ignited Jane’s desire to move away from a nursing career, for which she would have needed to retrain, to garden designing. The added bonus being that it fitted in better for a new life with two young children.

“The original garden was pretty impoverished. There was nothing there, so my first aim was to make it into as nice a garden as I could. So that was the challenge,” recalled Jane.

For a time she was juggling her role as a mum with that of manager of her husband’s medical practice and her work in the garden.

“Working as Kenneth’s Practice Manager allowed me 20 hours a week to work on the garden and I often spent evenings working on it too. I loved it and I became known

around Armidale for the garden. As it matured, people would come and visit and I was asked to give tours.”

Having discovered that she had a real flair for garden design, Jane decided to take it to the next natural level.

“I decided to retrain properly as a landscape designer, and I found the London College of Garden Design Australia, based in Melbourne which delivered courses via Zoom,” said Jane.

She is now also a member of the Society of Landscape and Garden Designers which offers the online networking opportunities her southern hemisphere home denies her.

Her self-styled workshops in her own garden have also proven to be extremely popular.

“I do a Plant Propagation Workshop again focusing on sustainability. Because my garden is huge and is very biodiverse, we would spend a whole day here.

“I keep the numbers quite small – between eight and ten – and it’s very personal. The morning tends to be theory, then we have a wander around the garden and talk about plants and which would be good for propagation. They are then free to go into the garden take lots of cuttings before coming back to our sheds to do the propagation.”

Jane has more planned for the future but with a twist. They will be half day workshops rather than full day. The reason? She’s no longer in a position to provide the lunches that would be a prerequisite for a full day workshop.

to collect the hot food. Inexplicably, however, he decided to put his own education before that of the family business and headed off to join his big sister, Hattie – also a former support worker – at university in Brisbane.

Somehow, I don’t think Jane holds that against him and she is working on her shortened courses “I’m aiming to do biodiversity in the garden, garden design and perhaps bird scaping - that’s pretty popular.”

Jane Gilpin Garden Design was founded in 2023 and her order book has been full ever since.

Garden designers are not thick in the Australian ground which can lead to patience being required by clients looking to commission work. She generally is booked six months ahead.

“There’s one other garden designer here in Armadale where I live. The next one is. two and a half hours away,” she said while admitting that she and the other local designer are “garden besties”.

“She is a native Australian and we do help each other out a lot and I know that I can rely on her for her local knowledge,” said Jane.

“I am heavily influenced by UK gardens. The Victorian Williamson’s Park in Lancaster, means a lot to me and in the UK I was a member of the National Trust. There were a lot of Trust properties on our doorstep,” said Jane, adding that she has always been a hill walker.

“So outdoors has always been my thing. My gardens are very naturalistic with a lot of emphasis on the soft scape, not the hard scape.

That said, however, the pub garden that I am working on currently

includes a little more hard scaping.

“I was asked to design it as an English country style garden. I do think my background probably got me that job.”

Jane doesn’t do the installation of her gardens. Her clients use her design as a blueprint and usually employ a contractor or, indeed, self install.

“My clients tend to be middle age or older and they’ve got a bit more time, a bit more money and a bit more space. They’ll buy all the toys, mini diggers etc. It’s a good excuse for them to do that,” joked Jane.

“There is a lot of liaising. Armidale is such a small place that everyone knows everyone. So generally, you know the builder and you know when a contract is going to get started. I’ll swing by and if there is an issue they’ll give me a phone call. It’s all very relaxed.”

Looking down the line what does the future have in store?

“I will always strive to improve my knowledge and pass that on to the clients. I just want to give them the best I can.

“What I mean by that, is that I want

to create the best garden, because I just want the wildlife, the plants, everything to survive and flourish and that needs the ideal ecosystem.

We are lucky to have this massive footprint of biodiversity that can support and encourage wildlife. We can all live together,” said Jane, with a passion which suggests she’ll succeed.

“I want to change attitudes and I do think I am already doing that now.”

So that’s the story of the Englishwoman in New South Wales.

Delivering consistent playing surfaces at Stowe School with ISEKI At Stowe School, sport plays a central role in both its identity and its appeal, with high-quality playing surfaces supported by a fleet of ISEKI machinery helping to underpin that reputation.

Across a growing estate of pitches, training areas and specialist facilities, the focus is on delivering consistent, highperformance surfaces that reflect the standards of the modern game.

That environment has helped establish clear pathways for talented students to progress, with the school producing athletes across multiple disciplines and maintaining strong links with Northampton Saints. Former pupils continue to move into elite sport, reinforcing the importance of both opportunity and the conditions in which that talent is developed.

For Grounds Manager Steve Curley, the connection between sport and surface quality is fundamental.

“It’s a big part of what makes Stowe attractive,” he explains.

“We have a lot of scholars who come here because of their sporting ability.”

That sporting reputation is reflected in a growing list of alumni. Cricketer Ben Duckett is among those to have progressed through the school, alongside county players including Graham White, Rob White, Mark Nelson and Jason de la Peña.

More recently, former pupil James Rudkin secured Olympic gold in the men’s eight rowing at the Paris 2024 Games, further highlighting the level of performance associated with the school.

Strong links with Northampton Saints have also created a clear pathway in rugby, with players progressing into the club’s academy and beyond.

Among them is Archie McParland, who credits his early experiences at Stowe as an important part of his development.

“I’ve been very fortunate to play from a young age at Stowe on the grounds there, which are well looked after,” he says.

“The work that goes into the pitches has helped me focus on my game and strive for bigger things.”

MAINTAINING CONSISTENCY ACROSS THE SITE

As the school has expanded, maintaining that standard across an increasing number of facilities has become a greater challenge.

Growth in pupil numbers and sporting provision has placed more demand on the surfaces, making consistency a key objective for the grounds team.

“The consistency is what we’re all trying to aim for,” says Steve.

“We’re trying to give them the best possible surfaces that you can play on, so it gives them a bit of an advantage when they go and play elsewhere.”

That responsibility extends beyond traditional pitches.

Even the rowing lake requires regular intervention, with specialist work carried out to remove weed and maintain clear water, ensuring rowers can train and compete without restriction.

To support this level of work, Stowe relies on a fleet of ISEKI machinery supplied by RT Machinery, which provides the versatility needed to efficiently manage a wide range of tasks.

“We use a multitude of ISEKI machinery,” Steve explains. “They’re reliable, they work well and give us the flexibility to carry out a range of tasks across the school.”

MACHINERY SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE

For Assistant Grounds Manager Kevin Beasley, that flexibility is essential as workloads continue to increase.

“The site’s changed quite a lot,” he says. “There’s a lot more children, a lot more sporting areas, so there’s a lot more work.”

“We currently operate five ISEKI machines, including four tractors and an SXG 326 ride-on mower, each playing a specific role in maintaining standards across the school.”

“Our SXG operates in multiple

areas. In the autumn, it’s ideal for collecting leaves and debris, while in the summer, it’s used across the school to maintain utility areas.

One of the big advantages is the high tip, and it performs very well in both wet and dry conditions.

It doesn’t drop anything, so we’ve got full confidence in it.”

Alongside the SXG, tractors within the fleet handle heavier maintenance tasks.

“We also use the TG 6490 tractor, equipped with an IQ gearbox, for tasks such as vertidraining and rough mowing. It makes life much easier when controlling speed, especially when pulling equipment, as adjustments can be made smoothly without relying on a clutch.”

Smaller tractors within the fleet are used for spraying and operating PTO-driven equipment, offering a balance of power and minimal surface impact.

“They’re lightweight but capable,” he adds. “We can run a 300-litre sprayer without leaving marks, which is really important for us.”

Across the school, that combination of skilled management, high standards and reliable machinery ensures that every surface plays its part in supporting the school’s sporting ambitions.

“We’ve got a big confidence in the ISEKI range, and we’ve been using it for four years now,” Kevin says. “It’s good machinery, and it’s ideal for what we need.”

New location, venue and Toro total solution for The Maidenhead The Maidenhead Golf Club has embarked on the next era of its 130 years by relocating to Ascot.

Supporting plans to update and improve the new course, it invested heavily in a Toro machinery fiveyear rolling lease programme and committed to the future by signing a Toro Total Solutions Agreement with distributor Reesink UK to include a new irrigation system.

With 36 extra acres and a more demanding layout, the club’s new home has the potential for not only a significantly enhanced golfing experience but realistic ambitions to make a top 100 golf club in the UK. But first there’s some work to do and that is the responsibility of Course Manager Martin Dearlove.

“The new course layout is fantastic but there is work needed to bring it back up to standard and reinstate its original features,” he says. “That process is well underway. We’ve invested £1 million in fairway drainage, there’s a significant bunker renovation planned, we have a brand new fleet of turfcare equipment from Toro, and installation for a new Toro irrigation system planned to start this summer.

“We’re working with Reesink

Turfcare for our machinery and irrigation and the service is spot on. We ordered our machinery in October and the fleet arrived in December just in time to start fresh at the new course in early January. It really couldn’t have gone any better.”

Working with Paul Bell from Reesink Southeast branch, the club has received three Greensmaster Triflex 3420 mowers, a Reelmaster 5610 and Reelmaster 3100, a MultiPro 5800 sprayer, the MDX and HDX Workman utility vehicles, a ProPass 200 topdresser, and for the very first time a ProCore 648s.

All but the ProCore 648s are replacement mowers for a previously ageing fleet, says Martin, and while it is the first time the club has owned a ProCore aerator, it is not the first time Martin has used one.

“I love that machine; we’ve always used it but up until now we’ve hired one when it was time to aerate.

However, with the new course clay based and susceptible to waterlogging, we knew we’d need to aerate more often to ensure standards are maintained throughout the year.”

With 16 years of experience working at top British golf clubs and time spent experiencing life on the course

in Australia, Martin knew the Toro brand well and when it came time to decide on who to commit to for a lease deal it was “the first choice”. At the same time, he knew he needed to invest in the team to help with the increased workload and he’s expanded the team from eight to 11.

“The next 5 to 10 years will be crucial in setting the foundations for taking the course forward.

There’s a lot of work to do but we have the right machinery and manpower to support it.”

The next priority is the irrigation system. The inherited system is 35 years old and doesn’t have the precision, reach or capabilities Martin requires for the site: “The system in place is causing us issues, we need the reliability of a modern irrigation solution.

“We’ve opted for Toro Lynx Central Control with Infinity sprinklers for the greens, tees, approaches and all the fairways with work starting July.”

Battery power becomes number one equipment choice After five years of educating domestic and professional users on the environmental, health and performance benefits of batterypowered outdoor power equipment, EGO has now concluded its Challenge 2025 campaign with the release of a new whitepaper.

Summarising years of research and awareness activity from EGO, the whitepaper also includes research from industry trade body, the European Garden Machinery Federation (EGMF). The data shows that between 2019 and 2024, the percentage of petrol-powered equipment in use across Europe fell from 36% to 24%. In sharp contrast, electric cordless equipment almost doubled in use, rising from 28% to 48%.

This is mirrored exactly in sales of new equipment, with electric cordless rising from 33% to 58%, and petrol falling from 40% to 26%.

Drawing on five years of campaign insights, field data, and market research, the whitepaper also explores results from emissions, noise and vibration testing from independent testing specialists, and evaluates whether EGO’s vision to establish battery power as the principal power source for outdoor power equipment, was reached.

Vince Brauns, Group Product Director, for EGO, said: “Our latest whitepaper shows clearly that our Challenge 2025 vision for battery power had a clear and significant impact on the industry. When we began the campaign, battery power was seen as a compromise. Users who

had used petrol for decades; could not believe that this new technology could give them the power, performance or runtime that they were accustomed to, and all without the strong fumes, loud noise or high vibrations. With misconceptions at their highest, we decided that it was time to show users the impact that using petrol tools was having on themselves and the environment around them.”

Challenge 2025 was launched in 2020 with one goal in mind: to educate and empower change in domestic and professional outdoor power equipment users to make battery the principal power source and leave petrol in the past. The hope was that by educating users about the advantages of using battery-powered outdoor power equipment, EGO could dispel misconceptions, reduce emissions and noise pollution, and increase user comfort and safety.

All these things were achievable with the technology available in 2020; however, a lack of awareness about the harmful nature of petrol, combined with uninformed perceptions of battery power, meant that mindset was a barrier to change. But now, as technology continues to advance, and with calls from industry bodies such as the Climate Change Committee to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is clear the market is shifting in favour of cleaner, quieter and safer equipment.

Working with specialist partners, this powerful and thought-provoking campaign commissioned market research to understand the attitudes and perceptions of over 1,200 outdoor power equipment users, evaluated the performance of petrol and batterypowered tools against noise, vibration and emissions, made Freedom of Information requests to understand the use of petrol tools by local authorities in Clean Air Zones and generated extensive press and social media coverage to heighten awareness.

While Challenge 2025 was successful in bringing battery power to the forefront of the industry, as the principal power source for outdoor power equipment, this is only the beginning of securing a cleaner future for generations to come.

“It’s slightly less powerful than the bigger machines, but for what we do, it’s perfect,” he explains. “Most of our work is regular maintenance, so we don’t need huge power. What we want is something lightweight and easy for us to use all day.”

Weight and balance are where the Kress tools really stand out.

“That strimmer is about 2.5kg, and even with a battery on, you’re only up to around three-and-a-half, maybe four kilos,” he says. “That’s the weight of a lot of other machines without a battery and that is why my team prefer using the lighter kit.”

Often forming a dark green or black jelly-like film, slippery algae is generally caused by a cyanobacteria called Nostoc. Other forms of algae, like moss, liverwort and lichen tend not to be such a hazard, although widespread growth might not be welcome from an aesthetic point-of-view.

It is applied neat to swept pavers using a watering can or light pressure garden sprayer, and left to act for up to 4 hours. The formula breaks down residue and removes stains. A pressure washer shouldn’t be used to remove algae and residue, as excessive water will encourage further growth, damage pavers and any sealer applied and it will loosen grout.

Water alone also won’t target hyphae or filaments anchored into place below the surface.

Acidic solutions should also be avoided, as these will damage acid sensitive material and erode cementitious grout joints.

After treatment, newly cleaned surfaces can be protected with ECOPROTEC Patio Sealer, ECOPROTEC Porcelain Paving Enhancer or ECOPROTEC Pre Grout Protection.

An avid Instagram user, Ivy + Stone has found success from posting videos of garden builds on the social media app. From attracting new designers and receiving engagement from all sorts of viewers, Thomas has found success in channelling some energy into the app. A recent video reached six and a half million views, for example. “That’s what is setting us apart at the moment and putting us on the map,” he states.

In 2024, the design and build company received an Association of Professional Landscapers Award for New Company of the Year. The company is also a finalist in two categories for the APL Awards 2026 in project value £50,000 – £65,000 and Hard Landscaping.

Thomas looks forward to many more “cool and unique” projects, just as the bigger companies are doing. “We’ll get there one day, we just have to keep going.”

Successful paving grouting despite the weather The British weather is a big topic, unfortunately, this plays havoc with many things in landscape construction, and especially paving grouting, just when you need to complete the works and get paid.

The pressure to continue and push the limits with cement and resin-based jointing materials, has resulted in bad and expensive experiences for many contractors.

The last few months have been particularly horrendous in this respect, as much of the British Isles has not had a day without rain this year, and to many it seems even longer.

GPR Landscaping and Groundworks in Crewe had

encountered this issue several times and for this reason they were not happy with any of the jointing materials they had been using.

Another contractor suggested they talk to NCC Streetscape and try GftK vdw 850 plus, which worked for them. As GPR had a large new Indian sandstone project to complete at the start of the year, they decided to give it a try. NCC also offered to support them on site and arranged a visit to start the pointing works and train the team.

The weather didn’t hold back, with constant rain throughout the day, yet the GftK vdw 850 plus performed exactly as required. No problems with residual water in

the joints, no washout, no surface staining or sheen issues, just a clean, consistent finish – Job done!

The management of Pondpride Landscapes in Poulton had also been looking for a solution to this problem for some time and they found NCC Streetscape online, as they had a large and complex porcelain paving job to start at the same time.

NCC proposed GftK vdw 815 plus, a finer grade for narrower joints and ideal for porcelain, and again NCC went to site and trained the team for the first application.

Great results, no waiting, no problems despite the intermittent showers and a pristine porcelain finish.

BARNSDALE GARDENS TOOLS ON TEST

Mountfield SP185: Solid and capable A

t Barnsdale Gardens, the legendary ‘Tools On Test’ team loves to try out a wide range of gardening products, including mowers. Mountfield sent Jon, the head gardener, a mower to try, and he had asked for a few musthaves: self-propelled, either mulching or collection and no narrower than 46 cm. He was happy to try either petrol or battery-powered, and they sent him the petrol version.

This mower is intended for cutting medium to large-sized lawns, up to about 1500 square metres.

Jon shares his verdict below…

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The mower arrived in a large box, so I already knew it would need assembling before use. The process was straightforward: the handlebars needed unfolding and tightening with the supplied bolts, the wheels had to be slotted on and secured, and the grass box needed assembling by simply pushing the material section into the clips on the box.

Nothing was complicated, but it did take a bit of time and a basic set of tools, and once everything is secured, the mower feels properly put together and almost ready for use.

Don’t forget you’ll need SAE30 oil for the engine, as well as petrol. I needed a small funnel to get the oil in, because the filler hole is quite

narrow and situated lower down on the side of the engine, rather than being a large top-fill type.

The mower feels solid, with a robust steel deck that is powder-coated in Mountfield’s traditional red. The wheels are made from a hard plastic material, but I’m happy to assume they’re hard-wearing. The handles are comfortable to hold, even though there’s no extra grip or padding.

Power comes from a 139cc Stiga ST140 Autochoke OHV engine.

I’ve used Mountfield mowers with Briggs & Stratton engines before, but I haven’t tried a Stiga-powered Mountfield until now. The engine looks the business, and if their battery-powered tools are anything to go by, it should be high quality.

MOWING AND PERFORMANCE – COLLECTION OF CLIPPINGS:

For the first cut of the year, I wanted to collect the clippings, so I fitted the 60-litre collection box to the back. It drops onto a couple of plastic lugs on the mower and is very easy to put on and remove.

I set the cutting height slightly higher than I’d usually cut for the main season. The grass wasn’t long, but it was varying in height throughout the gardens, and that first cut always smartens up the lawns and gives an overall level. The six-position height adjuster is one of the most user-friendly features on the mower: some machines need all four wheels adjusted individually, while on others the lever feels stiff and heavy when lifting the cutting height. The SP185 has a single lever that changes the height for all wheels in one go. The action is really easy and smooth, so you can quickly switch between a close mown finish and a slightly longer cut without needing to wrestle with each wheel.

There’s no primer bulb on this engine, as it has an autochoke. With the dead man’s handle pulled in, I gave a good pull on the starter cord,

and the mower fired up the first time, which was very pleasing.

I pulled up the self-propelled drive handle, and we were off! It moves at a really good, easy pace, so you’re more guiding than pushing, which makes a noticeable difference if you’re covering large areas or working for any length of time. The 46cm cutting width and manageable weight give it a good balance between progress and manoeuvrability, and it still feels easy to handle in tighter spaces. For areas that require more control, you can simply let go of the self-propelled handle and control the speed yourself.

It did a lovely job cutting; there’s a skid plate on the underside of the deck, which reduces scalping of the lawn, but as I was cutting slightly higher, this wasn’t an issue. The box collects well, and it has a bag full indicator to show when it’s time to empty rather than having to guess.

MULCHING OPTION:

The mulching plug lets you cut the clippings very finely and return them to the lawn as a light feed, which is useful on established lawns where you want to recycle a bit of organic matter.

To use the mulching option, the collection box needs to be off the mower. The mulching plug is provided and is very easy to put in place: lift the flap at the back of the mower, guide the plug in and drop it down into position.

When the flap drops back down, it will now sit slightly open, so that the clippings are fired down towards the ground.

I tend to mulch only on warm and dry days so that the clippings don’t lie wet on the surface. Luckily, we’ve had some lovely warm days, so I was able to put it to the test. I found that it worked really well, with the clippings returned evenly to the lawn so they can barely be seen.

This is definitely something I’ll be doing throughout the summer months.

PRACTICAL POINTS AND HANDLING:

The handles are comfortable, height adjustable and fold down for storage, which makes a real difference in a shed like ours where every inch of space matters. The self-propelled lever is easy to engage and disengage, and you can quickly drop back to ‘push only’ when you are working in tighter spots. The recoil start system is straightforward and easy, and the engine is neither overly loud nor excessively rough over a normal working session.

As with any petrol mower, a bit of routine care pays off. Emptying the grass box, clearing the deck, keeping the blade sharp and checking the oil regularly will keep the SP185 cutting cleanly and starting reliably. The two-year manufacturer warranty and the wider Mountfield/

STIGA support network also give some peace of mind if you ever need to call on a local dealer.

Having used many different mowers in my time at Barnsdale, I still rely on rotary roller machines for the areas where I like a clear striped effect. For all the other lawns where stripes aren’t required, the SP185 will be my go-to machine. It is particularly well-suited to our orchard area, where fruit trees sit within a grassed lawn, and there are plenty of trees and beds to cut around.

The combination of self-propelled drive and manageable size makes it ideal for these more intricate spaces.

VERDICT

If you are looking for a capable, self-propelled petrol mower for a medium-sized lawn, the Mountfield

SP185 is well worth a serious look.

This is not a lightweight toy, but a properly built machine that allows you to cut efficiently and comfortably.
