I had the great pleasure to chat with Andrew Wilson recently and congratulate him on the MBE that he was awarded in the New Year’s Honours List.

Andrew is a lovely man and has done so much for the industry, not just as being an extremely talented designer but also as co-founder of the London College of Garden Design. That said, Andrew is very much of the belief that the MBE is for everyone working in the industry and not just for him.

Free education with the GroundsFest Academy Helping people like George The GroundsFest Education Fund is already making a significant impact on the next generation of grounds management professionals, with several students already benefitting from its support.

The most recent success story is George Legg, a student studying Sports Turf NVQ Level 2 at Wiltshire College (pictured) and an Apprentice at Stanley Park Sports Ground. Thanks to the Fund, George was able to finance essential qualifications that played a key role in him securing a full-time position at Stanley Park Sports Ground after completing his Level 2 qualification.

One of the key certifications George was able to pursue through the Education Fund was the PA1 qualification in the Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides, as well as the PA6 qualification for the Safe Use of Pesticides with Handheld Applicators. These qualifications are crucial for anyone working in grounds management, particularly when it comes to managing fertilisers and ensuring the safe application of pesticides – a vital aspect of maintaining sports turf and other landscapes.

“The Education Fund helped massively,” George explains. “Once I had those qualifications on my CV, it was a massive boost. It made me more qualified to do certain things and definitely made me more employable.”

The Education Fund not only enabled George to obtain these qualifications, but it also allowed him to gain valuable skills without burdening his employer, Stanley Park Sports Ground, with the costs. This, according to George, is crucial in a time when the grounds management industry is facing a shortage of qualified professionals. “The GroundsFest Education Fund is great for creating opportunities for people like me,” he says.

Christopher Bassett, Event Director of GroundsFest, expressed his excitement about George’s success and the broader impact of the Education Fund. “This is fantastic news,” he says.

“We are currently working hard on entering the next phase of the Education Fund, which will see the profits from the event reaching an even wider range of people in the industry.

Green-tech’s part in Grantham relief road landscaping Grantham Relief Road is a pivotal infrastructure project led by Lincolnshire County Council in collaboration with South Kesteven District Council, Homes England, and the Greater Lincolnshire LEP. With aims to improve the town’s infrastructure and boost its growth.

Dobson’s, a family-run landscape contractor is entrusted with working alongside the Main Contractor, Galliford Try, and Green-tech to deliver the substantial landscaping package which is due for completion later this year.

The large-scale infrastructure scheme is a new 3km distribution road and is a crucial component for the development of the town of Grantham.

The route provides direct access to an employment site on the A1 which is forecast to generate over 370 jobs in the area. Opening up additional employment land along the new route will further increase the ability of the area to attract new business investment, offering employment sites with good transport links and a growing population that can provide local labour for new and growing companies.

Makita’s new hedgetrimmers Makita has added two powerful cordless hedge trimmers to its range of 40VMax XGT grounds maintenance tools. The 500 mm bladed UH020G and 600 mm UH021G both deliver highly efficient and effective cutting and have been designed for ease of use.

The UH020G and UH021G deliver an impressive 4,200 cutting strokes per minute and have a maximum blade opening of 20mm and will cut branches up to 10 mm in diameter. The new hedge trimmers feature single-sided blades with obliquely angled, triple-ground teeth for effortless cutting. The design of the blade also ensures excellent branch capture to provide smooth and complete trimming without branches escaping. It also features a reverse function to quickly and easily clear the blade in the event of a branch jam.

As part of Makita’s powerful XGT 40VMax platform, the new hedge trimmers deliver both high

performance and excellent run times. Using a 4.0Ah battery, the UH020G and UH021G will achieve run times of approximately 110 and 105 minutes respectively before needing to swap the battery. The fast recharge times achieved by Makita’s XGT batteries means the 4.0Ah battery will be ready to use again in just 45 minutes.

In addition, the UH020G and UH021G have been engineered for user comfort and ease of operation.

Both have a lightweight design with the blade guide bar manufactured from aluminium to improve the balance and reduce user fatigue.

The two machines also feature a redesigned switch lever on the handle that is easier to press in any orientation for simpler control. For safety, the UH020G and UH021G have an electric brake, anti-restart function and a double layered housing to minimise vibration.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show celebrates our landscapes From the wild woodlands of a British rainforest to a loch landscape and a songbird’s safe haven, RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025 is celebrating the beautiful natural landscapes of the British Isles in this year’s All About Plants category line-up, supported by Project Giving Back.

Seawilding by Ryan McMahon will capture the spirit of Scotland’s west coast landscape, with a saltwater pool planted with seagrass, the UK’s only native ocean plant. This will be the first RHS Chelsea garden to be partially relocated to the ocean floor.

The garden exclusively features plants native to the west coast of Scotland, such as globeflower, a wildflower of the Scottish wet meadows, and string sedge.

Amidst the ongoing climate crisis, The Wildlife Trusts’ British Rainforest Garden by Zoe Claymore will evoke the verdant wilderness of the rainforests that once swathed the British west coast. Reflecting a trend towards naturalistic planting and regenerative gardening, the planting utilises native shadeloving plants to boost local wildlife.

A soft, countryside-inspired palette of plants features in The SongBird Survival Garden by Nicola Oakey which highlights how gardeners can support the UK’s declining songbird population. Bird-friendly planting such as arctic bramble, grasses and yew hedges provide food, nesting material and shelter for songbirds whose population has declined by 50% in just two generations.

The Hospitalfield Arts Garden, a new addition to the show garden category, joins the homage to British landscapes with a dramatic dune topography and coastal planting inspired by the east coast of Scotland.

Designed by Nigel Dunnett, who returns to RHS Chelsea for the first time since 2017, the garden features planting established in sand to demonstrate how mineral materials can be used as a growing medium to encourage more diverse plants.

Fleet of Kubota RTVs prove pivotal to operations

A fleet of nine Kubota RTVs have been described as ‘pivotal’ to the maintenance operations at Berkshire’s Bearwood Lakes Golf Club. Supplied in 2023 by local dealer Lister Wilder, the fleet are delivering the versatility and scope to cover all course tasks – from the transportation of people, equipment and materials, to being utilised as a ball picker on the driving range!

Regularly ranked in the Top 100 Golf Courses, the venue has undergone major redevelopment over the last eight years under the guidance of course manager Andrew Whittaker. Testament to the improvements made, Bearwood

Lakes has been the host to a number of high-profile events over the past few years including the Justin Rose Ladies series, Senior Open Qualifiers and the Regional Open Qualifiers.

“We demonstrated various makes and models when we were looking to upgrade our utility vehicles, and the liking for the Kubota RTVs was pretty unanimous among the team” Andrew explains. The fleet of nine is comprised of four RTV-X1110s and five RTV-520s, in a mixture of ROPS and cabbed specification.

“The ability to have a closed cab is something the team really liked and will be popular when the weather turns! The 4-wheel drive

and hydraulic tip are other notable features which helps us to maximise operator safety and productivity.”

Together with user-friendly operation, comfort and efficiency, Andrew also notes the back up from the local Kubota dealer, to ensure maintenance operations are kept on track. “We are fortunate to have an excellent workshop manager in Bruce, who cares for all our equipment and maintains this to high standards each day.

But we also have Lister Wilder within a 15-minute drive of the club and had the fantastic support of David Gray guiding us through the seamless installation.”

Happy New Year start for Yanmar and BOSS BOSS Off-Road Vehicles have kicked off the New Year with a great start, announcing their appointment as UK and Ireland distributors for Yanmar Agribusiness.

The contract was finalised at the EIMA exhibition in Bologna in November 2024 and they have been completing the final details since then.

John Deere introduces new Gator™ XUV 875M John Deere has announced the launch of its new diesel Gator™ XUV 875M utility vehicle. Designed to improve productivity across various tasks, the Gator XUV 875M offers increased cargo capacity, enhanced comfort, and improved functionality.

The new Gator model’s key features include a 22.8 hp engine with a fuel tank volume of 42.4 litres, a seating capacity for three (suitable for off-road use), a cargo box capacity of 454 kg, and fully independent suspension with 203/229mm travel (front/rear).

Kibworth Golf Club thrives with DSV EuroGrass Solutions Martin Anderson, pictured below, became Course Manager at Kibworth Golf Club in 2019, aiming to improve the course in Leicestershire. With a strong connection to the club, Martin’s journey from apprentice to leader shows his dedication to its success. One significant change he made was using DSV EuroGrass seed mixtures, which greatly improved various areas of the course.

Martin’s connection with Kibworth runs deep, tracing back to his earliest memories. “I took my first ever steps here at a New Years Eve party,” he reminisces. Little did he know then that Kibworth would become not just a backdrop to his life, but a stage for his growth and passion.

toddler steps to his formative years as an apprentice, Martin’s bond with Kibworth only strengthened.

“My mum and dad were members, and I was a junior member before becoming an apprentice,” he shares, illustrating the club’s integral role in shaping his journey. It was here that he honed his skills, learned the art of greenkeeping, and even found love, meeting his wife in the clubhouse where she worked as a waitress.

In 2019, Martin landed the position of Course Manager, a role that held both challenge and promise.

“Some areas of the course needed attention,” he recalls, “but with a new committee and investments in equipment and products, we set out to make a difference.”

S

ometimes you have to go with your own instincts and ignore the advice of others.

Andrew Wilson, pictured, is a prime example of this when he told his school careers advisor that he wanted to study landscape architecture at Manchester Polytechnic.

“It was an academic school, and so eyebrows were raised at the idea of a pupil even attending a design course. And then I said, the best course is Manchester Polytechnic.

To which they said, our pupils don’t go to polytechnics. Well, that is where I ended up!” said Andrew with the level of zeal reserved only for those occasions when you get one up on “authority”.

He has gone on to have a career spanning both landscape and garden design to lecturing, with one of his most proud achievements being co-founder of the London College of Garden Design. He has written 11 books, numerous magazine columns and judged for the RHS at Chelsea, Hampton Court and Tatton Park.

And there won’t be too many among the staff and former pupils at his old school who have the letters MBE after their name.

Andrew became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in this year’s New Year’s Honours list, for services to landscape and garden design and heritage.

“I’m not sure where the heritage fits in, as I’m very much a contemporary designer, but I’m also a Chairman and solo tenor in the Weybridge Male Voice Choir, so that’s maybe where it comes in,” said Andrew, who is currently learning Nessun Dorma for an upcoming performance.

Since the announcement of the MBE at the beginning of January Andrew has been inundated with messages of congratulation from all corners of the industry.

“It’s really for everybody in the landscaping design family and there is a feeling that it’s on

behalf of everyone. Quite a few people said that you don’t see this very often within our field.”

Andrew’s success owes much to a mantra he has adopted for most of his life.

Whenever he has a choice to make of, whenever it is practically possible, he says “Yes”.

In fact, the co-founder of the London College of Garden Design has a bespoke lecture entitled “Just say Yes”.

In 1984 a friend asked if he’d be interested in doing some teaching at the Inchbald School of Design, a 10 minute walk from his home in Pimlico at the time. Andrew said “Yes”.

That launched a new career, running parallel to his garden design business.

Discovering that he was not just was good at it but also enjoyed teaching, he realised that there was scope for a dedicated garden design college in the London area.

Shoot forward to 2003, with a barrowload of experience in teaching under his belt, he was invited to a Chelsea launch event hosted

by Marshall’s, who were the show’s sponsors.

However, tired from a day’s teaching in Birmingham he was tempted to say “No”.

Fortunately his gut instinct kicked in and he said “Yes” to the invite.

“When I got there I was very pleased that I’d made the effort because I got talking to Andrew Fisher

Tomlin, who also had thoughts about setting up a college and together with Mark Gregory, who I was working with at the time, we decided to see if we could make a go of it,” explained Andrew.

Those seeds of a dream of a dedicated garden design college, carried in the heads of both Andrews, were planted. and over the subsequent two decades they grew to become mighty oaks.

To have launched the college with a series of lectures in 2008 and 2009; found suitable premises linked to a garden; then relocated; coped with the pandemic – the catalyst for launching their on-line offering – is no mean achievement.

“Our first premises were at Regent’s College at the bottom of Regent’s Park, and we were able to choose from a number of different rooms. Then, at the beginning of our second year, Andrew FT went into the admin office to be told that they

were giving us a year’s notice to vacate. The college was linked to American universities who wanted more space so we were pushed out.”

But often as one door closes another opens and on this occasion it was quite a door!

“We approached Kew Gardens and I must admit I thought it was a big ask, given their reputation, but after three months negotiation we agreed a trial and the conference room we use within the gardens is the perfect location for us.

“We get on famously and it works a treat. We have an excellent relationship and, as part of the agreement, each year we allocate a place on the course for a member of Kew staff free of charge.”

When first launched there were 16 students on the course and there was a waiting list. Then it was moved up to 20 student and there was a waiting list.

“Then we moved it to 30 and again ended up with a waiting list. Then the pandemic came and we then had to go on to Zoom. At that point we were hit by what I described as a tsunami of applications of people who were suddenly stopped in their tracks in their careers and, I

think, thought if not now when will would they make the career change they’d always promised themselves,” recalled Andrew.

As a result of going online, and realising how to make it work, the college now has 30 students faceto-face and 10 online each year.

“We have also added the Planting Design, Construction Design and now the Plantsmanship programmes, expanding the educational offering. We also established the programme in Melbourne, Australia.

“What the online has introduced for us is the ability to bring in international students and so

we’ve got students from the USA, Israel, France, Italy among others.

“They work online throughout the course but they there is always the option for on-liners to come in on certain days and it makes for an interesting balance.”

Those enrolled on the courses are blessed with a host of high quality tutors who each have developed outstanding careers within the industry, the likes of which the LCGD students would have dreamt of for themselves on the day they signed up.

The list resembles a Who’s Who of the country’s top garden design practitioners, each offering a wealth of knowledge and a genuine desire to pass it on to the next generation.

If that were not enough, the guest tutors who take time to visit are very much the icing of a beautifully baked cake.

One interesting point is that Andrew resisted seeking accreditation for the LCGD courses, a decision he came to while taking part in one of his other pursuits.

“I’m a keen swimmer and on a Saturday morning I used to swim in Staines and there was a guy there who was one of the head men at London Metropolitan University. We got talking and he asked me why wanted to accredit, as we would be just piling a load of bureaucracy and red tape onto

ourselves. That and it would make the course more expensive.

“So we decided that with the new course that we would start it and then look at accreditation at a later date if need be, but we’ve been so successful as we have produced graduates and students who have been successful that it has not been an impediment to us,” explained Andrew.

It is fair to said that had Andrew gone against his instincts and said “No” to that teaching opportunity at Inchbald College in the mid 1980s there is a fair chance the LCGD would never have seen the light of day. So that designer/lecturer combo

of his has opened a lot of doors.

“I just discovered that first of all I had an ability to teach, and secondly that I enjoyed it. It brought all sorts of other things as well. Literally on day one in my new office at Inchbald, the phone rang and it was a publisher asking if I would like to write a book.

“Again it was the sense of saying yes to something and seeing where it takes you. I’ve now done 11 books.”

The teaching has continued to run alongside his own design practice and he has found that one is very much beneficial to the other.

“When you are lecturing you’ve got to think about what you are doing and why you do it and then explain that. Someone might say ‘Why do you do that?’ And you think, ‘Well, that’s the way it is’. But then I would think, I actually don’t know why do we do that, and will start to think about it properly or more deeply.”

Andrew has found that it is the same with his writing.

“All three elements help each other. If you’re writing a book, then you need to be able to say this is how something works and why.”

As a garden designer Andrew sees himself very much as a modernist, but he is keen not to push a student down that path if they have other styles in mind.

gardens but if a student was on my course and wanted to stick with a more traditional route I’d interrogate them and discuss it with them but if that was what they wanted to do I’d definitely support them doing that.

“We are a college that teaches good design whatever the style.

Building solid design foundations and an understanding of

materials, understanding of space and an understanding of plants is what is important.”

And it is a successful formula as demonstrated by the success of the college’s alumni, many of whom have Gold Medals aplenty from some of the most prestigious shows on the planet. Many of those star pupils regularly come back often delivering lectures in the same room as they were given their own opportunities.

Andrew’s investiture will be in March at Windsor when he will receive the medal but he is as thrilled by the honour as everyone involved in the industry.

“What’s nice is that it’s an award outside of our profession. It’s a wider recognition and I think that gives it added importance.”

What opportunities or privileges having an MBE will bring to Andrew is open to conjecture. Who knows, he might even be invited to present the prizes at his old school!

both time-consuming and physically demanding. “Prior to the Etesia machine, I would cut them all with a pedestrian mower. It was a lot of hard work. This Etesia saves so much time and money. It is a great bit of kit.”

We wouldn’t have got it around some of the benches and flower beds.”

Given the uneven terrain of the properties, Ollie decided on the Hydro 100, known for its differential lock and sturdy design. “With the grounds being so uneven, we went for the Hydro 100 because it has a diff lock and it seemed very sturdy.”

Ollie’s decision was reinforced during a particularly wet demo session. “We got one on demo to start with – it was really wet – but these pick up the grass in wet conditions, even when it is long. It worked a treat on our demo; it picked up the grass and didn’t leave a mess, so we were really impressed with it, and we just went from there.”

The Hydro 100’s differential lock has proven invaluable on the steep, slippery slopes of the properties. “It is quite undulating and steep, and especially when it is wet, the diff lock comes in handy. As soon as you start feeling it slip a bit, you just engage the diff lock and it doesn’t leave a mess or wheel spin.”

During the peak growing season, Ollie faces the challenge of keeping up with rapidly growing grass. The Hydro 100 has made this task much more manageable. “If I was on my own and I only had my walk-behind mower, I would be completely swamped with grass and I would just be chasing my tail all the time. So having the Hydro 100 means I can stay on top of things. I’m no longer physically tired all the time from having to use my little walk-behind mower when I can use this instead.”

Ollie also appreciates the Hydro 100’s ability to cut and collect grass on formal lawns, ensuring that the grounds remain pristine for guests. “We cut and collect on the formal lawns because we don’t want guests to get their shoes clogged with grass and walk it into the castle – it wouldn’t be very popular with the housekeeping staff.”

The ease of adjusting the cutting height is another feature Ollie values.

“To change the height of cut, you have something that looks like a handbrake. You just push the thumb button in and set the height using the lever. I tend to use a medium setting because we want to take the top third off the grass to keep it green.”

Ollie has also been impressed by the mower’s reliability, even in less-than-ideal conditions.

“Considering how wet it has been over the past year I have never experienced any form of blocking, even if the grass is long and wet.”

Pitch perfection at Plymouth Argyle with Mansfield Sand Chris Ralph, Grounds Manager at Plymouth Argyle Football Club, knows that maintaining consistent, high-quality playing surfaces across the club’s grounds is essential for performance and safety.

National Trust reveals plans to create 250,000ha of nature-rich landscapes The National Trust has announced plans to create 250,000ha of naturerich landscapes over the next decade.

These will be both on and off its own land to help reverse the decline of biodiversity in the UK, with strategic land acquisitions such as the recent one it made in Lunt in Sefton.

It will also work with environmental organisations, farmers, landowners and local communities to achieve the ambitious target. It hopes that this will help to restore peatland and improve the health of enough soil to provide

climate resilient freshwater habitats.

Focusing on the climate and nature crisis in the UK, its strategy includes supporting 100 towns and cities to transform and grow green space. A new Nature Towns and Cities programme will launch this summer with founding partners Natural England and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Trust will also be taking on the management of its first site in Coventry, where it will work in partnership with Historic Coventry

Volunteering opportunities will be a focus too as the Trust aims to inspire five million more people to care for nature and heritage. This includes a two-year, £4.2m Freshwater Renaissance project to restore a functioning network of biodiverse and

Trust to care for Charterhouse. The Grade I-listed, 14th century former monastery – which includes a walled garden, orchard, children’s play area and grassland park – will be developed as a hub for the local community in the city.

A 14th century townhouse in Grantham is also being turned into a community space and cafe. Grantham House will provide free access to five acres of gardens from March.

“Today, nature is declining before our eyes and climate change is

threatening homes and habitats on a colossal scale. Meanwhile, millions of people can’t enjoy the benefits that green space and heritage bring,” says director general Hilary McGrady.

“So we will ramp up our work to restore nature, both on our own land and beyond our boundaries. We’ll work to end inequality of access to green space and cultural heritage.

And we will inspire millions more people to take action to protect the things we all need to thrive.”

Over the next 10 years, the Trust will develop a partnership with mental health charity Mind and other organisations to help address unequal access to nature and the mental health crisis.

Ambassadors such as classicist Professor Mary Beard and historian David Olusoga will be introduced to raise awareness of the charity.

The National Trust was first founded in the late 19th century to preserve the natural environment amidst industrialisation. It is planning to fundraise more in the next decade than in the previous century, partly by an ‘Adopt a Plot’ initiative to allow people to sponsor a plot of land for nature recovery at a site they choose.

“Our charity’s founders were passionate campaigners who recognised the threats to our natural and cultural heritage, and, against the odds, did something about it. That same boldness is needed today,” says McGrady.

Turntable GreenMechs hailed a gamechanger A pair of QuadChip160D woodchippers from GreenMech have been hailed a ‘gamechanger’

by Community Housing, bringing newfound convenience and safety to domestic tree works.

Purchased in the autumn of 2024, the arborist team of three were impressed by more than just the 360o turntable, with the outstanding manoeuvrability and performance of the QuadChip allowing the operators to simply ‘turn up, turn it and crack on.’
