LANDSCAPING Key ingredients of the cake I was extremely privileged late last year to attend the Living City 2023 seminar in Paris organised by Husqvarna. During a day and a half of thought-provoking papers by some genuine experts in their field, one stood out to me. That of Douwe Snoek, of Dutch landscaping company, Snoek Puur Groen, who told us that we had been building cities all wrong in recent times.

His belief that we give far too much importance to the car and not nearly enough to allowing our buildings to breathe and provide sanctuary for flora and fauna was compelling and strikes right at the heart of what we need to do to add a few more centuries to the life sustaining capabilities of our very own planet. I called Douwe a couple of weeks later and we had an enthralling chat about what he could was the problem and perhaps more importantly, what we could be doing to make things better. The subsequent article appears in this issue of Landscaping Matters.

PAGE 12

I hope that you enjoying the magazine as much as I do editing it. It has been a wonderful experience meeting so many talented and thoughtful landscapers over the last year and has given me a real appreciation of how much good could and can be achieved by making landscapers and landscaping a key ingredient of the cake, rather than just the cherry on top.

new dripline and irrigation innovations For irrigation professionals looking for value for money, low water volume irrigation, Rain Bird’s new Pressure Compensating Dripline (PCD) ticks all the boxes. It offers the same fast installation, durability in performance and water saving characteristics of the company’s established XFD On-Surface Dripline range – but is around just two thirds of the cost. PCD Dripline also features integral pressure compensating emitters. It is well suited to the irrigation of ground cover, dense planting as well as other landscaped areas. The SQ Series Square Pattern Nozzle range has been extended with the ¾ Square Pattern version. They are particularly suitable for surface watering the perimeter of trees and shrubs whilst avoiding the trunk. These efficient and precise low-volume spray nozzles are also ideal for irrigating difficult corners and small areas such as narrow planting beds, shrub islands within residential, commercial or public landscapes 6 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 6

and around pedestrian walkways. From an installation design and layout viewpoint, the edge-to-edge pattern capability of the SQ Series ensures full coverage of an area and reduces the need for overlap. The number of nozzles required is therefore reduced, not only simplifying designs and decreasing material costs, but also significantly reducing installation times. The 1.4–3.5 bar SQ Series is pressure compensated and the square spray pattern offers efficient and virtually mist free controlled irrigation. This means optimum coverage for non-turf watering applications and reduced risk of overspray. Rain Bird Flow Sensor technology is designed to monitor irrigation systems and identify any emerging problems.

Leaks or line breaks, typically caused by root intrusion or groundworks could go unnoticed without flow sensors and result in damage to property or flooded landscapes. Designed to bring the advantages of flow sensing to the residential and light commercial irrigation markets, the FG100 Flow Sensor provides year round protection for the investment in an irrigation system by monitoring for high or low flow and instantly identifying when there is a leak or line break. Information is fed back to a linked Rain Bird ESP-ME3 controller that supports flow monitoring and remedial action can be undertaken immediately. When paired with Rain Bird’s Mobile App for iPhone or Android, which gives the user full control over flow settings, this can be conveniently carried out from any location. It is a low cost investment that will help in water conservation and recently won the Irrigation Association’s 2023 New Product Contest in the United States. n www.rainbird.eu

The go-anywhere Raymo I

f you need to maintain very steep slopes, grassed banks around lakes or waterways or just difficult to access areas, the Raymo electric remote-control mower is the machine of choice. It has been designed with a low overall height of only 51 cm which together with a low centre of gravity, 4WD, and a zero turn steering system allows the Raymo to tackle steep slopes, grassed banks and low obstacles with ease. The operator controls the Raymo via an industrial-grade remote control so benefiting from zero emissions, low-noise and no vibrations. Being able to stand away from the mower and the ground being cut, the operator is kept away from dangerous hazards such as slopes, deep water etc. Three rotary decks, 42”, 52” and 46” Craft are available for the Raymo depending upon the type of grass to be cut and maintained. The 48 Craft deck is a heavy-duty deck for areas

that are cut only once a year. Two sickle-blade mowers, either single or dual are ideal for maintaining wildflower or bio-diversity areas. A new option, just launched is the R14 SFINX swing arm post mower which attaches to the side of the Raymo and allows posts, trees and similar obstacles to cut around. In open areas it increases the cutting width of the Raymo, but will then

retract automatically when it encounters a post or tree. The R14 SFINX may be fitted to the left or right or both sides of the Raymo. The Raymo remote control electric mower cuts faster than a strimmer and will solve your health and safety problems when cutting slopes, banks and difficult to access areas. n For a demonstration please contact www.raymoelectric.co.uk

Stiga evolves lawn maintenance with next generation robots

F

eaturing more than 37 patents, the STIGA Autonomous Robot Mowers range expands and introduces new cuttingedge features, for the ultimate lawn care experience. With a view to delivering the robot of the future, STIGA – the world’s leading manufacturer and distributor of machinery and equipment for garden care – embarked on an ambitious journey, committing to expand the range of its Autonomous Robot Mowers and upgrade their functionalities. More efficient, better designed, boasting superior lawn cutting quality and personalization: here’s how STIGA is ready to set new standards in the industry, offering an unparalleled robotic lawn care experience for consumers in 2024 and beyond. STIGA robots’ quality standards are backed by a dedicated innovation team, green thumb engineers, and proprietary technology development: these count for 37 patents registered so far, including 20 related to navigation, 8 to connectivity, and 9 to design and mechanical solutions. Most importantly, all Autonomous Robot Mowers operate through RTK GPS-based virtual perimeter, combined with STIGA’s patented Active Guidance System (AGS) predictive technology for utmost signal reliability that prevents mowing outages; STIGA 10 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 6

robots learn and remember where GPS reception is weak or broken and establish where blind spots exist in the garden, using this information to plan the most effective mowing route each day. Moreover, with complete Cloud connectivity to its reference station throughout its route, the STIGA Autonomous Robot not only ensures every single zone in the lawn is mown regularly and accurately, but also that no patches are repeatedly mown over for an even, lush result. Via STIGA.GO App, owners can easily achieve total control over their robot’s status and operations – such as scheduling, cutting patterns, cutting height adjustment, border clean ups, and perimeter modification– ensuring a seamless and fully connected lawn care experience. Because of high cutting

GRASS STAYS HEALTHIER, YELLOW TIPS ARE AVOIDED AND FEELING UNDERFOOT IS SOFTER

performance standards, STIGA robots only require 2 mowing cycles per day to take care of the suggested area, with no need to overcut or cut at night, and giving the grass a minimum of 5 hours to seal in the moisture before the next mow. Remarkably quiet in operation, they also combine functionality with an aesthetically pleasing, light design – a testament to their recognition with the prestigious Red Dot Design Award. With new cutting-edge functionalities, STIGA Autonomous can operate with different cutting patterns, which can be chosen by the user. By default, a “parallel lines” cutting pattern is defined: this to avoid repeated runs over the same area, minimising the time needed for complete garden mowing and reducing excessive grass wear, compared to random mowing patterns. New features include: n Custom Cutting Angle: After selecting the desired mowing pattern, it is possible to add an offset to the angle of the parallel cut lines, which can be customized in a range between+90°and -90°, in 0.1 degrees increments. The ideal feature to align the lines to existing shapes or garden structures, improving overall garden aesthetics. n Temporary No-Cutting Zones: It is possible to temporarily

Landscapingmatters.co.uk

exclude from the mowing area some sections of the garden. To set the “No-Cutting Zone” it is possible to connect two points of the virtual perimeter, creating a separation line. n Stay Away setting: It is also possible to temporarily exclude from the mowing area a zone around the user, which is defined by the GNSS position of the user’s mobile device, or by selecting the “buffer distance” from the desired point on the garden map via Stiga. GO APP, and the time limit. n Obstacle Notification: If during mowing the robot mower bumps multiple times, the robot will notify the end user of the presence of a hypothetical obstacle once it has returned to the charging base. Then, the user can see the approximate position of the obstacle on the map and delimit it by setting a circular “No-Cutting Zone” around it. n Long Exit: If the function is activated, when exiting from the charging base, the robot reverses for a distance of 2 meters from the charging contacts, and then turns 180° to start cutting or

following the docking path. n Closed Area Mowing: This function allows the robot to work in closed areas independently, without connecting them with transfer routes. Once completing the designated cutting zone, the robot will automatically stop, awaiting repositioning on the charging base or another garden zone. n Push Notifications: If activated, the robot sends push notifications through the Stiga.GO APP in case of robot malfunctions, or when it stops after mowing a closed area. This allows quick remote or onsite intervention and constant communication, for total control over both the robot and the garden. In order to fit gardens of all sizes, this generation of cable-free robot mowers expanded. In particular, the STIGA A1500 – a flagship product that revolutionised lawn care in 2023 – is joined by the, A750, to meet the cutting needs of smaller lawns (up to 750 sqm). NEW entries in the family of big robots, instead, include the A7500 and A10000 models, which mark a significant extension of the cutting area that can be covered by STIGA robots up

to 10,000 sqm, ensuring efficient care of even the largest lawns. With STIGA’s patented ePower battery at its heart, the STIGA Autonomous Robot Mower range is engineered to operate energyefficiently and respectfully of nature. Indeed, STIGA ePower battery features optimised chemistry for reliability and durability, so even after 1,500 charging cycles – equivalent to around 4 years of use – the battery still runs at over 80% capacity. Sharp blades allow a neat cut, while protecting the natural environment as they let the grass seal and heal naturally. This means grass stays healthier, yellow tips are avoided, and the feeling underfoot is softer and softer – ultimately for a healthy, high-quality lawn. In addition STIGA have also included 5 years FREE connectivity and 5 years warranty on all their autonomous robot mowers for 2024. A cashback promotion running from now until 12 July 2024 allows consumers to claim up to £500 (dependent on model) – making these mowers even more extremely desirable. n www.stiga.com/uk

We’re building our cities all wrong! 12 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 6

Scott MacCallum catches up with Douwe Snoek, the Dutch landscaper designer who has strong views on what we should be doing with our cities LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 6 | 13

Douwe Snoek

T

here are many things for which the Dutch are known. Windmills, clogs and cheese being just three. However, one of the most amazing is the fact that this small northern European country produces the tallest people in the world. The average Dutchman measures up at 182.5 cm – a smidge under six feet – with many stretching well above that figure. Douwe Snoek, of Snoek Puur Groen, fits that Dutch mould perfectly. A huge, imposing man – if you are a football fan, think Jaap Stam - with a personality to match. He fills a room with his presence, which is ironic, as his aim in life is to free up space and let environments breath. The Landscape Designer spoke at the Husqvarna Living City 2023 conference in Paris last November and made quite an impact with his assertion that we have been building cities all wrong. His message is compelling. His message is stark. His message is also full of hope. It also demonstrates that the role of an urban landscape designer is not just to create attractive and pleasant working environments, although that is always one tick in the box.. It is much more important than that. It is to help those cities breath and, in turn, give the planet a fighting chance of being life-sustaining for another 2,000 years or so. The data exists, as does the physical evidence, of an increasing number of natural weather/climate events, that natural disaster holds as much concern to the planet as that of weapons of mass destruction, while the likelihood of damaging flooding or heat stress/drought across the planet is becoming more and more inevitable. Heat stress alone saw 62,000 deaths in Europe in 2022.

At the centre of it all are cities, where, in the northern hemisphere, the average temperatures have risen by more than four degrees, against an average in nonurban environments of one and a half degrees. Biodiversity is being replaced by a bland monoculture at an alarming rate. “The economic damage in my own country of Holland of flooding and heat stress is enormous and that gives landscapers an opportunity to make a difference,” explained Douwe. “Insurance companies are now coming to us and asking what we can do to help prevent the impact of climate change.” So what can be done? “We are giving the car much too much space inside the city. Cities are made for humans, but when you design for cars you get cars,” explained Douwe, speaking to Landscaping Matters from his office in Holland, shortly after the Paris conference. “We are living in cities where transport carries way too much importance. Cities need to breathe and need to work to be more human,” added Douwe, emphasising his point. He is delighted that the desire to have greener, more healthy, cities is strong and that it is higher up the global agenda than it has ever been but… And here, Douwe has his very own mantra. “As landscapers we don’t talk green. We do green!” Away from the overwhelming and suffocating combustion engined vehicles, the buildings themselves should and can be much better havens for both flora and fauna. “There are nature restoration programmes which provide funding to make buildings much greener and provide shelter for birds and insects.

“WE ARE GIVING THE CAR MUCH TOO MUCH SPACE INSIDE THE CITY. CITIES ARE MADE FOR HUMANS, BUT WHEN YOU DESIGN FOR CARS YOU GET CARS” – DOUWE SNOEK 14 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 6

“As a landscaper you should have the knowledge and ability to create such environments for your clients. If not, you will be the Kodak of the next generation,” he said. So where can landscapers make more of an impact on the current way in which cities and buildings are constructed? “As it works at the moment, a client wants a new office building and has an idea of what they would like . They will go to an architect and a building company. At some point in the process they will realise that they also have an environment to create, and approach a landscaper to create that environment for them. Then they will add in that they also want space for cars to be parked. At a stroke the chance to create something meaningful is lost,” explained Douwe. Even then, if there is an insistence that car parking is a must, Douwe has a solutlon. “Ironically I had one company come to me and say that they sold bicycles and that they wanted a bigger car park. We had to come up with a solution which was nature proofed and that was paving which was permeable so that all the rainwater would go down into the soil and feed the plants rather than shedding off ultimately finishing up in the sea.” “I say that if we want to build better cities we have to use a different approach. You still have a client, you still have an architect but you have to bring the landscaper on board at the very start of the process too. Then you still have the chance to create an environment for the end user, the people who are going to be using the building. Because, with every site, success depends of the person who is going to be using the building, not the building itself.” “Outdoor working space is much cheaper than

} indoor office space,” said Douwe,

“HIS MESSAGE, THAT LANDSCAPERS HAVE A VITAL ROLE IN THE FUTURE OF A SUSTAINABLE PLANET, WILL RESONATE WHEREVER IT IS HEARD AND IT MIGHT JUST GIVE ADDED POWER TO THE VOICES OF THOSE WITH SIMILAR VIEWS WHO MAY BE FINDING THEIR VIEWS IGNORED.” 16 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 6

who had great success at one Dutch school where he was able to provide two outdoor classrooms, giving the school the flexibility of both indoor and outdoor teaching space. “I said to the school, don’t you think it better to give maths lessons outside, biology lessons outside. I also told them that the head works better at around nine degrees Celsius, not 22 or 25 degrees Celsius. “They told me that they’d never thought of it that way, so we went ahead and now the school is saving money and the outside of the school is so much nicer for everyone.” Douwe has similar outside-thebox thinking for those working in an office environment. “If you have outdoor space you can have walking meetings where you have to come to a

decision by a certain point on the trail, before moving on. When would that ever happen at a meeting inside around a table? “The aim is to have a healthier, more attractive environment for people to work.” Even given the weather in the UK we would surely have enough suitable days in the year to utilise an outdoor working environment. He is not a big advocate of the trend which emerged during Covid of leaving the city for a more rural lifestyle. “Going out of the city is not the solution. Making the city more healthy, that is so much more important for lots of people,” said Douwe. Much of what Douwe proposes does require a major investment in public transport to allow resident

and visitors to leave cars outside the city limits or, not require cars at all. It chimes with the congestion zones that penalise those taking cars into city centres. The goal of having fewer vehicles in city centres frees up buildings to do things with the spaces that were previously reserved for parking. He believes that there is also an opportunity to make indoor office space much more pleasant, making them much greener through sympathetic use of plants. It follows through outside where older, more utilitarian buildings can be retrofitted with vertical planting and even planting on the roof which will again help the space breathe. Douwe speaks passionately about the subject, while there is almost a degree of exasperation

of being the man with a solution that other decision makers are perhaps by-passing either consciously or subconsciously. He is not someone who will be beaten and his track record shows that determination and ambition coarse through his veins. Snoek Puur Groen is a family firm founded by Douwe’s parents 45 years ago. “When I was 12 years of age I know that this was what I wanted to do. I never doubted it. When I completed my studies I joined the company in 1999. I got one third of the company with my mum and dad having the other two thirds. When they retired I bought the whole business and have since grown it from 32 employees to now where we have 120 employees. My goal is to have 250 to 300 people and have

a very solid base for the company.” Currently they are working all over the Netherlands with some work in Belgium but Douwe has ambitions to perhaps carry out some work in London. His message, that landscapers have a vital role in the future of a sustainable planet, will resonate wherever it is heard and it might just give added power to the voices of those with similar views who may be finding their views ignored. If that is the case we might well find cities morphing into much more pleasant places to live in, work in and visit. Douwe is certainly a big man but he also has some very big ideas. If we can find a way of bringing them to fruition cities will be much more pleasant places for humans, flora and fauna alike.

The Helion 3, the Airion 3, and the ULIB 1200 & 1500 batteries have been awarded the European LONGTIME® label after a strict and impartial control carried out by APAVE Certification. This demanding process made it possible to assess the compliance of these products with the 41 criteria of

18 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 6

the label, which focus on robustness, repairability and the monitoring and maintenance of the tools. 1. The Helion 3 hedge trimmer has a reliable brushless electric motor, a robust cutterbar, and the materials of which it is composed, insensitive to corrosion, have been selected for their compatibility with intensive use and for their resistance to impacts. 2. The Airion 3 blower features replaceable and repairable magnesium parts. 3. The ULIB 1200 & 1500 batteries are composed of very highcapacity lithium-ion cells and offer a lifespan of more than 1,300 charge cycles. The design of Pellenc products is based on a long service life and ease of repair under professional operating conditions. The end of life is delayed, and the environmental impact is significantly reduced. By voluntarily committing to this sustainability approach, Pellenc goes beyond the regulation of the repairability index and is fully committed to the fight

against planned obsolescence and respect for the environment. Created by Ethikis ad civis, LONGTIME® is the first European and independent label that identifies and promotes products that are designed to last. Because extending the lifespan is one of the most effective strategies for reducing the environmental impact of a product, Pellenc mobilises its research and development teams to offer consumers ever more sustainable products. To claim this label, Pellenc has met all the criteria, thus validating the company’s integrated strategy, focused on quality and sustainability. Elsa, co-founder of Ethikis, said: “We are proud that manufacturers are using the label to inform consumers about the sustainability of their products. Committing to the LONGTIME® approach means demonstrating transparency and we are delighted that Pellenc has joined this approach.” Pellenc is distributed exclusively in the UK by Etesia UK. n www.etesia.co.uk/pellenc

Richard proudly details the array of attachments they employ, including the brush, the leveller, the lawn mower, the 4 in 1 bucket, and the root grapple. Each attachment serves a distinct purpose, showcasing the machine’s adaptability. “The root grapple isn’t just for roots; it is also used for picking up round bales of straw and logs. It has a great feature where the top grapple closes in two bits so if you have an uneven piece of wood, it doesn’t just grab one side of it; it works independently, which is really clever,” notes Richard. “Just the other day we were able to deliver and unload 16 tonnes worth of slabs round the back of a private property in no time at all. Previously this would have taken 2 or 3 days of hard graft with a wheelbarrow; so, the time saving is incredible. I think the Avant Loader really is a Swiss Army Knife.”

THE AVANT ADVANTAGE: COSTEFFECTIVE, ECONOMICAL, AND RELIABLE Richard emphasises the cost-effectiveness of the Avant 755i Loader, asserting, “Every machine has its limitations, but I think the Avant Loader does every job more than adequately. It has saved us money because we don’t need 5 or 6 machines – the Avant can do them all.” The manoeuvrability, diesel efficiency, and ability to navigate tight spaces make it an indispensable asset for the Overton family business. In praising the local Avant dealer, Ben Burgess, Richard underlines the importance of reliable support. “Back-up is crucial when purchasing a new machine, and I get a great service from Ben Burgess.”

A TESTAMENT TO INNOVATION AND TRADITION The Avant 755i Loader stands as a testament to the innovative approach of a family business that has spanned generations. In choosing the Avant Loader, the Overton family has not only embraced a versatile and efficient tool but has also set the stage for sustained success in the years to come. n www.avant.co.uk Richard Overton, left, has praised the transformative power of the Avant 755i Loader in improving their operations

Seeding is simple with the Dennis S500 T

he Dennis S500 Plus seeder is helping to get the lawns into shape at Cheltenham Ladies’ College according to Ross Spry, Head of Grounds and Gardens. After initially starting his career in greenkeeping, Ross Spry has been working for various colleges in the UK for over a decade. At Cheltenham Ladies’ College he oversees a grounds team consisting of seven members of staff who tend to the sports facilities and gardens. Somewhat of a perfectionist, Ross recognised that the College lawns needed some attention and was quick to act. “The lawns were not in the best shape, and there was a lot of weeds and moss, and thatch build-up in them,” he said. “We bought a scarifier and an aerator to try and alleviate this problem, but I wanted a machine to put seed back into the ground effectively rather than just broadcasting it. “We looked at various brands of

seeders and we found the Dennis S500 Plus to be the best for us.” Ideal for bowls, cricket, golf and other fine turf and ornamental lawn areas, the dual-purpose Dennis S500 Plus has a 510mm (20”) operating width complete with interchangeable spiker and slotter reels. The spiker reel punches through the ‘surface pan’ allowing air, water and fertiliser to penetrate the root zone, while the slotter reel creates ideal seed germination pockets thus reducing seed wastage. Using the optional seed box attachment will ensure grass seed is dropped onto the ground at the prescribed rate and brushed into the pockets. “We normally seed in the spring and autumn and before using the S500 Plus we apply a selective weedkiller to try and get rid of the weeds and moss,” said Ross. “The S500 Plus’ best feature is just how user friendly it is and it makes the task of seeding enjoyable.” n www.dennisuk.com

fleet of five RTVs and five tractors from Kubota are supporting operations across the busy 36-hole complex at Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club. Some of the vehicles have delivered close to 20 years of reliable service and it’s this dependability that’s keeps Golf Course Manager, Gavin Kinsella, loyal to the brand for some of their most vital and well-used pieces of equipment. Founded in 1892, and set on a stretch of royal parkland, Royal Mid-Surrey today comprises of two 18-hole courses - a shorter, more tactical round lays ahead on

the Pam Barton course, while the longer, championship JH Taylor course poses a test to players of all abilities, regularly playing host to county and England Golf tournaments. “Keeping on top of condition and delivering the standards that players expect with a team of 20 is a challenge, particularly when you factor in holidays and staff absence” explains Gavin, “but it helps when you can rely on the equipment you have in the shed.” “We purchased our first Kubota RTV and compact tractor based on the great working relationship the club developed with local dealers Lister Wilder. Since then, the outstanding reliability we’ve had combined with the operator experience and suitability of these vehicles on our site means we’ve never looked at anything else.” He adds, “40% of our land is floodplain which can lay very wet over winter, and these all-rounders keep us mobile and never fail to get us and our attachments out on the course even in very inclement weather.” One of the clubs original RTV-900’s,

purchased in 2005, remains on the fleet joined by two RTV-X900s and two RTV-X1110s in more recent years. “These vehicles are the first out of the shed every morning and often the last to return. They’re our go-to for towing trailers, moving greens machines, and transporting tools and the team around the site for course set up. All the controls on the RTV’s are where you want them, and the suspension makes for a smooth and comfortable drive experience.” Alongside RTVs, and proving to be the workhorses for the majority of autumn, winter and spring maintenance and renovations are an L2602, L3830 and L5040 from Kubota’s popular L tractor series, a B2710 and a larger, M6060 with loader. Gavin concludes, “Our loyalty to Kubota is entrenched in our confidence in them. They’re machines we know, machines we trust and over several years have proven to be the most robust and reliable vehicles for our situation.” n www.kubota.com

GroundsFest 2024 will be heading back to Stoneleigh Park on 10 and 11 September 2024

10 and 11 September 2024, Stoneleigh Park, warwickshire A fter the resounding success of the inaugural GroundsFest, the organising team is gearing up to make this year’s event even more spectacular. Scheduled to take place at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, on September 10 and 11, GroundsFest 2024 promises to be an experience like no other. Building on the feedback received from the first edition, the organising team is working behind the scenes to implement improvements that will elevate the event to new heights. One of the significant changes is the introduction of a more free-flowing layout, enhancing the overall event experience. The addition of a new entrance is set to reduce the walk to the event, ensuring attendees can immerse themselves in the festivities more quickly. The camping zone is set to see new facilities and the festival area is also in for a makeover, with plans underway to introduce brand new attractions. This strategic move aims to keep the excitement levels high and provide both exhibitors and visitors with novel and engaging experiences. The goal is clear: GroundsFest 2024 will not just meet expectations but exceed them. The success of GroundsFest 2023 speaks volumes about the event’s unique approach. With over a 90% rebooking rate from exhibitors, it is evident that the industry has embraced the innovative event concept with open arms. According to the post-show exhibitor survey, a staggering 93% of exhibitors generated new sales leads, showcasing the event’s tangible

GroundsFest 2024: Save the date

impact on business growth. Robbie Hayter from Net World Sports commended GroundsFest, stating, “GroundsFest is doing things differently for the industry, and I think it is refreshing. A lot of the visitors are really excited to see the outdoor demos and the festival is a great idea because you loosen up a little bit and there are more conversations and networking opportunities.” Megan Oliver from the Howardson Group echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the appeal of seeing products in an outdoor environment. “People are loving GroundsFest and the footfall has been really good. We’ve seen people from all over the country and we’ve taken a lot of enquiries. It’s got a nice festival feel and it makes it an enjoyable place to be.” GroundsFest visitors were equally upbeat. Christopher Mortimer from Mortimer Contracts Limited said. “It was a fantastic show – the best in years. I bought new kit and saw lots to benefit my company for the future. I also made some great contacts and I’m already looking forward to next year.” Finn Greer from Trackstars attributed GroundsFest’s success

to the diversity of the event. “I think GroundsFest, being indoors and outdoors, and having such a wide variety of demos are the reasons why it has drawn such a large number of people.” “The buzz is all about GroundsFest now,” shared Tom Duchesne from Top Garden Services, emphasising the event’s growing reputation and influence. Marketing Director Chris Bennett highlighted the importance of industry feedback in shaping the evolution of GroundsFest. “The only way to evolve GroundsFest is by listening to the industry. This commitment to responsiveness and adaptability ensures that each edition of GroundsFest is a reflection of the evolving needs and desires of the landscaping and grounds management community.” As anticipation builds for GroundsFest 2024, the industry can expect an event that not only celebrates the latest innovations but also sets new standards for collaboration, networking, and business growth. GroundsFest 2024 is poised to be an unmissable highlight on the calendar for all sectors of the grounds management industry. LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 6 | 25

ET Lander cruises through the streets of London A

ccording to Jo Desborough, Head Gardener for The Bedford Estates, the Etesia ET Lander is a luxury electric utility vehicle which can be driven from site to site through the busy streets of London without worrying about the battery life. The Bedford Estates has owned, developed and cared for much of Bloomsbury, London since 1669. The Estate comprises some 200 properties containing over 825,000 square feet of office and educational accommodation, some 100,000 square feet of retail space, over 1,000 hotel bedrooms and more than 550 flats. It also includes two public garden squares, Russell Square and Bloomsbury Square and several private garden areas. These include Bedford Square, the only intact Georgian garden square in London. The location of these gardens was a reason for choosing the ET Lander according to Jo. “We chose the Etesia ET Lander because it’s a vehicle that’s easier to drive on the roads. “We have to go between our gardens and in order to do that, there are busy London roads in

between, so having a cab that’s fully enclosed helps us with the traffic. It’s more comfortable to ride in and the features that it offers are perfect for what we need.” 100% electric, spacious, wellequipped and user-friendly, the ET Lander is built on a robust chassis and has an array of options including a three-way tipper bed with dual control from the fully fitted twoseater cab or by remote control when outside the vehicle. With a length of just 3.72 meters, the ET Lander is very compact. Thanks to the power steering, the short turning radius of 4.40 meters and 360 ° visibility, it goes anywhere. The autonomy of the vehicle lasts for a full working day – without noise pollution, can transport loads of up to 940kgs and can also tow up to 750kgs. The latest models are fully N1 homologation compliant meaning that the ET Landers are fully road legal along with being able to be used off road. They also feature lithium-ion batteries which ensures that the range of the ET Lander extends to 100km and have a charger system compatible with a standard type 2EV car charger. The battery-life on the ET Lander certainly doesn’t concern Jo and she also revealed that the team wouldn’t be without it. “We’ve had the ET Lander since January, so we’ve been running it around our gardens for the last six months or so. The battery life has been really good, and we hardly ever have to charge it, so that’s very impressive. We use it to do lots of short journeys and you

might expect that the batteries would run out maybe slightly quicker, but in fact, we find that they last several weeks for us. “We often use the ET Lander for collecting our tonne bags to pick up and bring back to our main head office where we have our green waste storage, and also for taking all our equipment over to the gardens. “Using the ET Lander has made life a lot easier going between the gardens and driving on the roads. It’s very comfortable in the cab, very manoeuvrable and easy to drive. It also has windscreen wipers and having a radio is the icing on the cake. “It has a very luxury feel to it and it feels more like driving a car rather than garden equipment.” Bloombury Estates purchased the ET Lander through Etesia dealer RT Machinery and Jo was quick to praise the service she has received to date. “RT Machinery were very helpful throughout the whole process. Scott Reynolds (Area Sales Manager) came and delivered the ET Lander and ran through all of the directions and showed us how to use it, which was clear and comprehensive. “They also come and do our servicing, which they do on a regular basis. They get the equipment back to us as soon as they can and generally provide a really good service and are always available when we need them.” You can view a video of the ET Lander with The Bedford Estates by visiting: https://youtu.be/cbxnh6nF9p8 n www.etlander.co.uk

Chainsaws, Estate Management, Woodchippers

ECO 135TT is the solution for convenient chipping A

fter four years of hiring woodchippers, with ‘mixed’ experiences, the time was right for Dan Snaith of Pro Axe to invest in a machine to call his own – that being an ECO 135TT from GreenMech. Opting for the turntable model, the ECO 135TT has brought newfound convenience to day-to-day operations, not just available when he needs it, but rotatable to be exactly where he needs it too! Dan has used various makes and models of woodchipper during his two decades in the industry, half of those operating under DS Grounds Maintenance – recently rebranded and relaunched as Pro Axe. “We undertake all manner of domestic and commercial treeworks for customers across South West Wales, which had put a lot of pressure on an aging GreenMech we previously had at our disposal” explains Dan. “We’ve therefore been relying on hire centres for the last few years which was unreliable and inconvenient to say the least!” “I got in touch with Martin Lucas at GreenMech who responded quickly and arranged a demonstration of the ECO 135TT for the following week with our local dealer Powercut. The whole

process was seamless and as soon as I saw the machine, I was sold!” Defined as entry-level but delivering an impressive 5” chipping capacity, GreenMech’s ECO 135 range is ideal for a wide range of arb and landscape applications. The roadtow ECO 135TT model features a 24hp Loncin engine and full 360o turntable for powerful performance and unbeatable manoeuvrability. “For me, this was one of the main selling points – it’s lightweight, easy to transport and when we arrive on site we can simply turn the ECO 135TT to face in any given direction, improving efficiency and safety for the operator especially

when working at the roadside. Being petrol powered has also resulted in a reduction in our fuel spend, giving us chipping power that I’d say is on par with a larger 6” machine in a unit that’s close to half the size.” “I was also impressed with the fast delivery, we waited only a few weeks before Powercut installed the machine with us in early October.” Since its delivery, the ECO 135TT has proven a versatile addition to the team. “It’s been out every week, and has tackled everything we’ve put through it – including hedge brash which the GreenMech seems to mulch through no problem. Overall, I couldn’t be happier.”

DURAPOST FENCING SYSTEM PROVIDES LONG-TERM ALTERNATIVE TO TIMBER ®

A

failing timber fencing system has been replaced with a range of high performance DuraPost products. Incorporating fence posts, Urban Slatted Composite fence panels and an Aluminium Gate, the holistic solution from Birkdale Sales provided all the necessary aesthetic and performance requirements. While timber fencing can look attractive initially, it inevitably begins to rot, weaken and deteriorate over time. This was the case at the property of Mr Edwards, whose ageing timber fencing was losing its appeal and beginning to fail – so a replacement was needed. “We wanted something that would look neater and not require much maintenance. DuraPost by Birkdale seemed to tick all the boxes,” said Mr Edwards. “The slim and tidy galvanised steel posts in anthracite grey give me more space in my garden and come with up to a 25-year guarantee – although it is likely they will last much longer. I then opted for the DuraPost® Urban Slatted Composite fence panels in the Natural colour option. It looks just like cedar, but has greater longevity, thanks to its ability to resist mould and rot.” Birkdale’s Urban Slatted Composite

fence panels are manufactured from a combination of materials, including rice husks – a natural bi-product from the rice industry – which accounts for 55% of the panel. Recycled HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is also incorporated into the design. These robust panels are incredibly strong and wind tested to high speeds. Steve Ward from Silver Fern Fencing installed the new system. “Thanks to the low weight and slimness of the posts, we could carry and install them easily and quickly. They are so much better to work with than concrete systems, which are far harder to carry and install. The panel boards were then installed horizontally. I always recommend DuraPost® to my customers and will continue to do so.” Once the project was finished, Mr Edwards was delighted, “Compared to the original timber system, our new fencing is worlds apart. The post works incredibly well with the Urban Slatted Panel to provide fencing that is neat and tidy, very strong and does not require maintenance. All the products in the system helped us to achieve exactly what we set out to do.” n www.birkdalesales.com/durapost LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 6 | 31

20 QUESTIONS

Name: Martin Beaumont Job: Founding Director at Monty Miracle How long in the role: I’ve been in the cleaning industry for over 40 years What’s the best thing about your job: Diversity, the different things every day, the challenges – I love it!

Fix up your fencing and decking for spring BY MARTIN BEAUMONT, MONTY MIRACLE

S

mart wooden decking and fencing gives a quality look to any garden, grounds or dining area. But the weather can play havoc with their appearance and the UK has had quite a winter, with some heavy storms and very cold periods. Natural expansion and contraction can weaken the material of fences and decking, while cold, wild, rain snow and sunlight will cause it to discolour. It needs protection to keep it from weathering, warping and weakening – but first, as we head out of winter and into spring, you’ll probably want to give it a good clean. These surfaces are a good breeding ground for dirt, algae, mould and lichen as they retain moisture and have natural grooves and cracks. When these build up they look unsightly and they can also be a slip risk. The key is to clean it gently so as not to deepen these. A liquid outdoor cleaner like Monty Miracle means you don’t need to use a jetwash – which can

A JETWASH CAN ACTUALLY DAMAGE WOODEN FENCES AND DECKING, SPLINTERING THE WOOD. 32 | LANDSCAPING MATTERS | ISSUE 6

actually damage wooden fences and decking, splintering the wood. Liquid cleaners are simply applied to the surface then left for ten minutes before rinsing. Monty Miracle’s unique formulation cleans away grime and grit without an invasive powerwash. First, remove the visible debris. Once the area is clear, you can tackle the stains and organic growth. You’ll need a pump to dispense the cleaning liquid. Wearing gloves and old clothes (as you would for any gardening task), dispense the liquid into the pump and then simply spread all over the surface area of the wooden fence or deck. You’ll need the surface to be relatively dry for this task. 5 litres will cover 20-25 square metres. If you are tackling a large fence or decked area, break it into smaller areas of 25 metres squared at a time. After 10 minutes the liquid cleaner will have worked. Use a hose to rinse it away with water – the product completely neutralises during the cleaning process, so it’s biodegradable and can be safely rinsed away onto plants and grasses: just make sure you cover them with water first. Once the area is dry, applying a wooden sealant gives it an extra protection, preventing stains and maintaining the natural lustre of your wood. Now you’re ready for summer!
