ith more than 300 exhibitors from all over the world, Abenteuer and Allrad has long been one of the most important events in the 4WD Touring and Overlanding industry for many years. A fourwheel and long-distance travel fair that reflects almost the entire spectrum of the offroad, caravanning and overlanding scene. This year the expo opens on Thursday 16th June at 10 am and continue until Sunday 19th June at 5pm (note: last admissions are 1 hour before the end of the show). The Grand Opening takes place on Thursday with representatives of the media and some VIPs on hand to experience some driving courses. Every day between 12pm and 3pm there is a special lecture on a subject related to the industry. On Thursday is the Lecture “Pure allwheel adventure in Russia” by Konstantin Abert. On Friday it is Lecture “E-Traction - The Trip” by Susanne Brüsch, and on Friday the Lecture is “To the end of the world” by Thomas Rahn and Sabine Hoppe. WITH THE OUTPOST AT

T

he new Outpost AT provides on- and off-road drivers with versatile, durable driving in all conditions. The agressive tread is designed to help SUVs, crossovers and pickups navigate tough off-road challenges, the tyre is reinforced with Aramid Shield™ – these are puncture-resistant Aramid fibers embedded beneath the tread to provide extreme resistance to rugged surfaces and road hazards. And we have certainly found these tyres to be tougher than previous tyres across a range of tough conditions. In fact we have regularly experienced side wall punctures over the years driving in some locations, and when revisiting these locations with the Outpost AT, we have so far had no punctures at all. These New tread design elements help drivers to feel more comfortable and secure on challenging terrain. Certified with the threepeak mountain snowflake, the tyre’s adaptable rubber compound offers a comfortable, confident ride on any surface and in any weather, courtesy of the company that invented winter tires. The TURAS team has driven this tyre on sand, mud, rough forest roads, rocky mountainsides and most recently across a variety of rough tracks and green-lanes. Recently we have been doing a lot of driving across the remote country lanes or ‘bohereens’ in the Wicklow Mountains National Park, which is situated just south of Dub-

lin City. Covering 20,483 hectares, Wicklow Mountains National Park has the distinction of being the largest of Ireland’s six National Parks. It is also the only one located in the east of the country. The National Park extends over much of the Wicklow mountains. Upland blanket bog and heath cover the upland slopes and rounded peaks. The wide open vistas are interrupted only by forestry plantations and narrow winding mountain roads. Fast flowwing streams descend into the deep lakes of the wooded valleys and continue their course into the lowlands. and throughout these explorations we have constantly had a smooth, quiet and comfortable ride. Driving for hours into remote national parks and locations far from reliable assistance or recovery options, it is comforting to have such confidence in the tyres you depend on for your safe travel. As Nokian Tyres Head of R&D Olli Seppälä says , “Nokian Tyres is renowned for our deep know-how in tire technology and versatile testing that help keep drivers safe also in extreme conditions”. “Outpost AT is the latest

example of that commitment and represents our highest-tech offering for drivers of SUVs and light trucks. We have spent years designing and testing this tire, incorporating new features that will make it a durable, versatile option on and off the road.” Outpost AT pledges to help drivers extend their terrain, their toughness and their travel through forged features that allow them to follow wherever their adventures lead.

Extend your terrain

Outpost AT helps drivers remove their limits and confidently go wherever their journeys demand, bolstering on- and off-road experiences through supreme traction for all driving conditions. The NOKIAN TYRES Outpost AT features a special 3D tread pattern that helps the tire thrive in challenging conditions. The tire’s novel tread pattern reflects the diversity of terrain it is designed to tackle, enhancing grip and handling on any surface, from hot asphalt to soft mud and snow to rutted gravel. Summit Sidewalls – peaks at the top of the tire’s sidewalls – offer extra grip when the tire sinks into soft surfaces and provide an aesthetically striking design that symbolizes the rugged ambitions of the tire’s drivers. Shoulder notches cement the tire’s sturdy grip at the point where the sidewalls meet the tread pattern. Canyon Cuts form at the intersection of the 3D tread and the shoulders, allowing drivers to experience extra grip when they encounter unpredictable surfaces. And those surfaces include snow, and slush – Outpost AT is certified with the three-

peak mountain snowflake emblem. New Outpost AT is crafted to combine the versatility of an all-season tire with winter handling capabilities. “Drivers of rugged vehicles want to enjoy their adventures and return home safely, no matter the challenges they have faced,” Seppälä adds. “We crafted the Outpost AT to thrive on mud, snow, gravel and asphalt, because traction and grip don’t just reduce our limits; they help us push through our limits and enjoy our journeys.”

Extend your toughness

Outpost AT is stocked with technology to protect drivers in the most rugged environments. Aramid Shield™ technology gives the tire extreme durability and puncture resistance. The tire’s tread and sidewalls are protected by extremely strong Aramid fibers, the same material used in bulletproof vests and the aerospace industry. Aramid embedded beneath the tread helps protect

O E D I T V A W T E S N O P T U O

from punctures due to rough terrain and road hazards, while it reinforces the sidewalls to help prevent blowouts from potholes and other obstacles. Throughout the tread pattern, Gravel guards boost the Outpost AT’s puncture protection. They strengthen the bottom of

the tire’s deep grooves, guarding against rocky terrain and allowing the tire to comfortably carve through rugged surfaces. The sturdy structure of Outpost AT supports high load capacity and makes the tire an ideal option for heavy-duty work and recreation, on or off the road. “Outpost AT is one of the tough-

est tires we have ever made,” Seppälä states proudly. “It is aggressive enough to provide ultimate durability thanks to Aramid Shield™ and refined enough to offer comfort along the way.”

Extend your travel

Outpost AT offers high mileage thanks to a tailored tread whose

landscape is forged with protective features. A canyon-deep tread pattern exceeds the depth of predecessor, the Rotiiva AT, by 1,5 mm and LT-metric versions by 2,5 mm. The deepened tread, 11,5 mm and LT sizes 15 mm, extends Outpost AT’s service life and strengthens its ability to master difficult terrain. Drivers

can enjoy fuel efficiency thanks to a durable and sustainable rubber compound crafted to minimize rolling resistance and keep emissions low. As a global leader in sustainability, more than 90 percent of Nokian Tyres’ products rank in the lowest rolling resistance categories. Three-dimensional siping helps Outpost AT contend with snow, slush and standing water, extending journeys in harsh conditions. And stability supports and groove lifts lend a sturdy structure to the tire, giving drivers peace of mind as they navigate long trips on difficult surfaces. As always, Nokian Tyres helps drivers know exactly how much tread life remains. Its patented Driving Safety Indicator, available in the latest generation of every Nokian Tyres product, clearly displays the percentage of available tread so drivers know when it’s time to purchase their next set. The new Outpost AT is a smart choice which enables the drivers to enjoy the benefits of the tire for a long time.

E

ver since I was a kid I’ve always loved to roam the mountains of Eastern Serbia,. This vast space of mostly uninhabited wilderness is a sanctuary for all the freedom lovers who want to lose all connections with modern civilization and it’s set of rules. Actually, this is one of the few places in Europe where you still have large chunks of land that are completely out of mobile range, so you really don’t have the faintest idea what is happening in the outside world. It’s not only desolate, but it’s also breathtakingly beautiful.

That beauty actually comes from the diversity and from the richness of different vistas that you experience there. From the river Danube and it’s Iron Gate gorge, where the first European civilization sprouted, over the dense forests south of it, largest in Europe, that are hiding to amazing natural works of art in the form of natural stone arches in the river valleys, amazing canyons such as Lazar’s or that of Temštica river, to the endless highland ridges of Stara Planina, numerous mountain rivers and lakes, you can just get lost in all this beauty and forget everything about time

THE LAST OASIS

OF FREEDOM ther schedules. In my opinion and the eastern part of Serbia is the most mysterious and engaging, where the southernmost tip of the Carpathian mountain range lies, and legends of the indigenous Vlach people who lived there since pagan times. Another reason is the fact that the population density in eastern Serbia is almost four times lower than in the rest of the country.

forgotten road might be taking you, not hesitant to use your winch, and also (more often) your chainsaw, driving for days without a chance to resupply or refuel and sleeping in some authentic, desolate wild camp spots, this is the place that will offer you an experience of a lifetime!Venturing deeper into the wild. The Kucaj mountains offer the biggest uninhabited territory in Serbia - 50x50 km, basicalThat brings us large portions of ly 2.500 square kilometres of completely uninhabited land to completely uninhabited mounroam and explore. temperatures persist there day and night from December to late March, and the snowfall it receives simply doesn’t melt before spring. That means that Beljanica very quickly becomes impassable in winter. Right through the heart of KucajShould you decide to travel further south, towards Stara or Suva Planina, or even further, to the Traversing Kucaj mountains from the far northwest to the southeast, you will not be disappointed as this offers some incredible vistas and 4WD tracks. With a number of touring options, you can keep a bit more to the west heading towards the Prskalo waterfall and over Valkaluci hunting area towards Velika Brezovica and experience the largest meadow on Kucaj. Alternatively you can choose the less known trail following the marvelous Klocanica river valley and then continue through the densest forests of Kucaj to end the journey descending down the 25 km long Radovanska river valley. Lazar’s canyon Boasting a 10 km long crack in the Earth’s crust on the easternmost side of Kucaj mountains, between the Malinik ridge and Dubašnica highland, Lazars canyon is one of my favourite places in the Kucaj mountains. There are many spectacular scenic viewpoints along the edges of the canyon, but for me one stands out from the pack, and that’s Kovej, where the Mustecic family from Zlot village are fortunate to own the most beautiful part of this enchanting land. So I simply love being their guest, enjoying their cuisine and hospitality, and taking memorable photographs from their many scenic

viewpoints. A great viewing point is from Malinik ridge. Holy Mountain Rtanj Rtanj, a dominant mountain in the Serbian part of the Carpathian range, is a striking sight from whichever side you view it. Surrounded by deep, wide valleys from the north and south, it’s an awe inspiring sight featuring an almost perfect pyramid shape of its highest peak, Šiljak. The main star of many sunset photos, this mountain is probably the most controversial place in eastern Serbia, claimed to host supernatural events and even being connected to aliens, it’s also claimed by some that it’s actually the largest man maid pyramid on the planet built in ancient times You can’t drive all the way to the top of Rtanj, as it’s too risky but also because the central part of Rtanj ridge is a strictly protected area. Driving around in the Rtanj area, whichever side you approach it from, is a really uplifting experience. Great wild camp spots with great views exist, if

you have time you can also discover some well hidden, deep forest camps. Preparing for the symphony of Stara Planina As I prepare to enter Stara Planina there are two more places worth visiting before I reach Knjazevac town, the key resupplying and refueling spot on the way to Stara Planina. Tupiznica mountain is actually a slight detour towards the north but is well worth getting another spectacular sunset. The mountains are spectacular, with most of them completely overgrown with vegetation. So much overgrown that it actually can’t be successfully crossed by a vehicle, and even if you cross it on foot, prepare for a fierce fight with thorns and bushes. Actually, the only rational way to reach it, is by taking the semi-tarmac road to the highest peak, where several telecom antennas have been built. Just before the antennas, a gravel road parts to the northwest, eventually reaching several meadows and passing right by the spectacular western stone wall. This is the place to park your vehicle and enjoy an unforgettable hike along the stony ridge, either southwards towards the peak or towards the wild north end. If you search around the meadow you’ll also discover quite a spectacular cave. But

beware - it’s dangerous to attempt climbing down if you don’t have climbing gear!If you don’t decide to spend a night on Tupiznica, you can just roll on a serene gravel road towards the village of Stogazovac, and just before that you will reach the village, its worth stopping off here to see a unique short

rocky canyon by the name of Zdrelo, which hides a church and a really attractive scenic viewpoint on its cliffs. So what about Stara Planina? Well, that is a long story that just cannot be cut short. Therefore, I’m leaving it for part two of the last oasis of freedom!

3 Ingredient

FRUITCAKE in a DUTCH OVEN with Cabix Plus Briquettes

W

e recently cooked a simple 3 Ingredient fruit cake using acombintio Petromax Atago and Dutch oven and Petromax Cabix Plus briquettes.

The recipe is simple:

1kg dried mixed fruit 700mls chocolate milk cooking oil spray 2 cups of self-raising fiour. The first step is to soak the fruit in the chocolate milk overnight (keeping it refrigerated). The following day, preheat the camp oven, the target temperature is around 160C. Line the base and sides of a round baking tin with greaseproof paper, and spray some cooking oil onto the interior of the paper. Slowly sift the flour into the fruit and chocolate milk mix , mixing continually (ideally using some sort of sieve for this process)mixing well and evenly. Then pour or spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin. Place the tin into the dutch oven, place the lid onto the oven, place the briquettes onto the lid (two thirds on top and one third underneath). And bake for about 3 hours. To test if the cake is ready you can put a skewer into the cake and if it comes out clean/not sticky the cake is ready. The important thing is to manage the temperature of the oven as much as you can. And Petromax has produced a helpful ‘Table of distribution’, or rule of thumb regarding the number of coals, briquettes and much more.

CANADA

C

anada has a very interesting and expansive geography that occupies much of the continent of North America, sharing land borders with the United States to the south and the U.S. state of Alaska to the north-west. Stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west; to the north lies the Arctic Ocean and it also has the longest coastline in the world, with a total length of 243,042 kilometres or 151,019 miles. It is also interesting to note that Canada is home to the world’s northernmost settlement, Canadian Forces Station Alert, on the northern tip of Ellesmere Island—latitude 82.5°N—which lies 817 kilometres (508 mi) from the North Pole. Did you know that Canada is geologically active Having many earthquakes and potentially active volcanoes. With a varied climate you can go from one extreme to the other. With such a diverse landscape Camping in Canada offers some of the best experiences globally. Predominantly there are four types of camp grounds in Canada. And they include Private / Commercial Camp-grounds Private camp-grounds or commercial camp-grounds (front country with several facilities) are located along the main touristic routes and around tourist destinations in Canada. Commercial camp-

grounds are privately owned and operated and are rated with stars. Parks Canada camp-grounds Parks Canada Camp-grounds (located front country, as well as backcountry) are located inside one of the National Parks of Canada and are owned and operated by Parks Canada. Parks Canada campgrounds get very busy during high season so its advisable to book in advance. Provincial and Territorial Parks camp-grounds Provincial Parks Camp-grounds or Territorial Parks Camp-grounds (located front-country, as well as backcountry) are located inside a Provincial/ Territorial Park and are owned and operated by the specific provincial or territorial government. Free Campsites/Wild Camping On public land (National, Forest) and areas that are not privately owned (Crown Land), wild camping is generally allowed. Since lots in Canada can be quite large, you should make sure that you do not camp on private property or ask the owner for permission in advance. Depending on the province or territory you wish to visit, there may be additional prohibitions that further limit the possibilities of wild camping, also known as ‘backcountry camping.’ However, some provinces allow camping under special conditions in isolated provincial and national parks. You can find more information about this further down the page. Camp-fires Most Parks Canada campsites have fire pits or metal fireboxes for your camp-fire. You should only build a camp-fire in a designated fire pit when camping in a Parks Canada location. Keep your fire small and under control.

JOIN THE

BRIGADE

As part of our global catch up with enthusiasts in the industry in this issue we catch up with Spencer from the Canadian based Brigade Overland who are based in Vancouver in Canada. They are a family-owned & proudly Canadian company through-and-through. With connections to the very best off-road & overland brands around the world As off-road enthusiasts they know how difficult it can be to shop from Canada, which is why all of their products ship directly from their warehouse in Vancouver, in British Columbia. Brigade Overland staff & partners have built countless vehicles and ventured to all corners of the world, testing products to make sure nobody gets left behind. Why do you enjoy the great outdoors? Being out in nature has always been a draw for me. Growing up in my family we would go on camping trips in our VW Westfalia, up and down the Pacific coast, in to the Rockies, and it was always at proper camp-grounds or wild camping Do you wild camp? Wild camping is so common in Canada that it’s just simply called “camping”! We’re spoiled with limitless places to pitch a tent, it’s a country where you really can just stop and camp wherever you like - most of it is public land. What’s so cool about camping? Camping is such a different experience from home life, and around here it’s tied strongly to the distinct seasons we have. For me it’s all about Summer nights: long sunsets that last forever, warm breezes, and stunning views.

What type of vehicle(s) do you drive? and why this type of vehicle I’ve got a 2000 Defender 130 DCPU, and my business partner has a 2003 Mercedes G500. We’re both diehard automotive enthusiasts. Both vehicles carry with them a go-anywhere legacy, and have some fascinating military history as well. Canada’s armed forces even use the G-class as their standard vehicle. Can you tell us a little bit about camping in Canada: e.g. Rules, regulations and laws. We’re blessed with public land all across Canada, and as long as it’s not a park or privately owned you’re free to camp anywhere. However, many provinces have established campsites, which are usually in a picturesque location. Services range from full water and power hook up, to simple pit toilets and fire-pits. Many of these more basic sites are 4x4 access only, and rarely receive visitors. Any recommended trips or locations British Columbia & Alberta offer some of the most incredible scenery found anywhere in the world, so that’s where I’d start. There are hundreds of 4x4 routes and thousands of camp sites throughout each province, thanks in large part to a massive network of resource roads built for forestry and mining. My favourite areas are the Cariboo-Chilcotin and Kootenay regions of British Columbia. It still amazes me that we can get away for a few days and not cross paths with another soul the whole time. Any tips for people considering camping in Canada Canada becomes very wild very quickly once you leave the main roads, so come prepared. Backcountry travel is not dangerous here but can be if you get stranded thanks to a slashed sidewall or broken down vehicle. Bears and other animals are always

a concern but are rarely dangerous - keep your food secure and sealed. If I’m venturing away from phone service (which doesn’t take long) I’ll always travel with another vehicle. That said, there are many routes that solo travellers can take on without being too far from civilization. Do you see many roof tents / swags /overland vehicles in Canada? What’s your favourite type of camping and why e.g. Roof Top Tent, swag on stretcher etc.?1Roof top tents are massively popular in Canada. Due to the nature of camping here, you’re more comfortable being off the ground away from critters, damp and snow. RTTs enable people to start camping in the winter more often, which wasn’t much of a draw 10 years ago. We have seen swags become more popular because they offer a ground camping option that is suitable for all conditions, and many people would rather not leave a RTT mounted year-round - or they want the roof clearance for overgrown trails. What’s your favourite Camp Cooking Food or meal? I’ve always been a fan of cooking in a cast-iron pan. They’re extremely versatile and durable for everything from bacon and eggs to a stir fry, but having a charcoal BBQ is a great option because it leaves fewer dishes to do, and there’s nothing quite like a prime Alberta steak, fresh off the grill. Tell us a little bit about Brigade Overland We started Brigade because as avid off-roaders we couldn’t find a company that was stocking products we wanted right here in Canada as a distributor. With the USA right next door, we often find that getting the right gear is difficult because of the cross-border customs hassle and inflated shipping costs. So, we leaned on a few connections in the off-road world and ended 1

up where we are today - supplying Darche to the Canadian market, along with a few other choice overland brands. What do you like about the Darche Gear? DARCHE has just about everything you need to kit out a vehicle. Many other brands make just RTTs, or just chairs & awnings. DARCHE products carry with them quality, and we know that if anything ever did go wrong, they’d support us and our customers all the way. Once you find a brand you like and you experience the quality, you tend to keep with that brand for the rest of your kit, so it’s great that ourselves and our customers can get everything from a camp chair to a mega RTT from one source.

Well that’s our second IN FOCUS chat with the guys from Canada stay tuned for the next couple of issues as we make our way around the world catching up with more like minded folk.

HI-VIEW

RTT

We recently caught up with Clare from Trek Overland and we asked her what was the most popular selling RTT. Clare said that the Darche Hi-View 1400 Roof Top Tent with Annex is one of there most popular tent for the British customers. She said that a lot of this has to do with its size but also because its well able to withstand the British weather. Using a 260gsm poly/cotton ripstop canvas, the tent performs very well in wet conditions. iThis tent has an impressive PU 1500mm water

rating and seam sealing that will keep you dry in extended rainy conditions, giving you great protection from the elements all year round. But also it is like all Darche products very robust and well made, its a premium quality product. The Hi-View Gen 2 comes complete with a large full width window, improved class leading ventilation and sky roof star gazing views. A full zip on 3-way annex, with access points to the rear of your vehicle is also included.

The tent includes a premium quality, high-density 65mm mattress with a removable cover and water-resistant base. There is enough room to stash your sleeping bag or doona inside, so your bed is made and waiting for you upon set up. The insulated baseboard is made with heavy-duty compressed aluminium. The kit also includes a fully removable, durable PVC cover for protection when you are in transit. The included mounting brackets suit most commercially available flat roof rack or roof rail systems. For more information on this product drop Clare or one of the team members a line at Trek Overland and they will answer any queries that you may have about this very popular tent.

IF YOU TAKE IT IN

TAKE IT OUT Every country throughout Europe and beyond has different laws when it comes to wild camping and driving in remote areas and all of these laws should be respected.

As pressure on our landscapes from recreational use continues to increase it is now as important as ever for us all to abide by the Leave No Place principles. It goes without saying that the vast majority of tourers and campers do respect their environment but unfortunately we will also have a minority who do not and give us all a bad name. So if you take it take it out.

ts an obvious statement to make that 4WD vehicles needs to be serviced. Most of us do get our vehicles serviced, but not all servicing is of equal quality. We asked the experts at APB Trading Ltd. for a few quick and simple tips to keep your 4WD in good repair and motoring along. When you get yourself a new pride and joy, the first thing you should do is read the manual in detai. This will give you lots of useful and importan information about your vehicle including the correct timing/scheduling of service intervals. Knowing and setting the correct service schedule for your vehicle is important, and it is also important to set a schedule that suits your own requirements and the type of use you put your own vehicle to. Most 4WD manufacturers recommend a service schedule of 1015,000KM, but most also suggest that you make it more frequent if you are hard on your vehicle or fo a lot of towing etc. It is also a good idea to get a service if you have spent time in a dusty environment. It goes without saying that you should also regularly be checking your engine oil, brake fluid, clutch fluid, transmission oil, radiator overflow and power steering system. Tyre Pressure Having the correct air pressure in your tyres is very important and affects the

longevity of the tyre as well as traction. If you have the wrong pressure for your environment the tyre will wear more quickly or unevenly and you wont have the optimal traction. When off road driving tough corrugated and rocky roads are a very tough environment for 4WDs and if you dont reduce the air pressure when driving on such surfaces the wear on your tyres and vehicle is amplified. Overall picking the right tyre pressure for your terrain will massively improve fuel economy, reduce wear and damage to your tyres and your vehicle and will also give you a more comfortable ride. Dont overload your vehicle The more weight your vehicle has to carry, the harder it has to work. Obviously we do need to load up our 4WDs with lots of gear, but you should really strive to not overload the vehicle.More weight means more wear, more fuel used and ultimately a shorter vehicle lifespan. Look in the manual to see what the vehicle payload is and dont exceed it. If you are towing a traile, make sure it too is not overweight and that it is safely packed and balanced. Things that are bad for your 4WD It can be great fun driving across slippy, wet and deep mud.. It’s can be challenging and also very enjoyable. But you should know that driv-

ing your 4WD through mud is one of the worst things you can do for it. The Mud can gets into all parts of your vehicle , and it’s abrasive, corrosive and extremely hard to fully get rid of. Mud can block radiators and can clog up everything from bearings to and alternators. There’s nothing mechanical (or electrical) that does not react adversely to mud, so keep this in mind. Similarly you should ‘never’ drive through salt water unless you have no other options, because no matter how much you attempt to clean your vehicle afterwards, you will still have shortened its lifespan. APB’s workshops are fully equipped with the latest Autologic diagnostic equipment to carry out 4×4 servicing and maintenance on the full Land

Rover range without affecting your manufacturer’s warranty. Performance tuning and power upgrades are available for most Land Rover vehicles. Not only do APB service and repair Land Rover, Range Rover, Freelander and Discovery but also most makes of off-road 4×4 vehicles to include Toyota, Mitsubishi, Daihatsu, Nissan, Pajero and Isuzu. APB’s experienced 4×4 mechanics can handle minor or major repairs, MOT preparation, and arrange MOT testing by appointment. The bodyshop can rectify anything from a slight scratch to serious damage. Chassis change and re-builds also available.

Early this year Bollinger changed its focus from targeting consumer customers to commercial vehicles as they saw the trend of companies actively starting to look at their existing fleets of vehicles and decisions were being made on what type of EV would suit their future needs. Basically in January 2022 they cancelled consumer orders for the eye-catching B1SUV and the B2 pick up EV. “We are committed to providing revolutionary all-electric vehicles for fleet customers,” said Robert Bollinger, Founder & CEO of Bollinger Motors. “I look forward to supporting innovative companies like New York Con Edison and growing our relationship with them as they seek to lead by example in pursuit of their sustainability objectives.” Teaming up with Con Edison who are the second largest solar producer in the US, their clean energy commitment includes a plan to electrify its fleets, with commitments to electrify 80% of its light-duty fleet by 2030 and 100% by 2035. Con Edison has tasked Bollinger Motors with developing a Class-3 prototype of a walk-in van for initial piloting. Con Edison is tentatively planning to integrate these vehicles, along with other applications in Classes 3 - 6, into its fleet by 2024. “As the US approaches a piv-

otal moment in the adoption of electric vehicles, Bollinger Motors is developing strong working relationships with prospective fleet and commercial customers, and our work with Con Edison serves as just one example of the tailor-made solutions we’re able to offer,” said Frank Jenkins, Director of Commercial Sales. “Our all-electric platforms and chassis cabs offer a wide variety of commercial applications that are highly adaptable to the specific use cases and duty cycles that today’s commercial fleets require Founded in 2015 by Robert Bollinger, Bollinger Motors is a U.S.-based company, headquarters in Oak Park, Michigan. Bollinger Motors will manufacture all-electric platforms and chassis cabs for commercial vehicles in Classes 3-6. www.BollingerMotors.com. According to Bollinger using their robust DNA from the Bollinger B1 and B2, their commercial Class 3 thru 6 platforms will be durable, dependable, electric work beasts.

Their platforms are based on a singular vision to be efficient, cost-effective, and long-lasting. By developing Classes 3 through 6 simultaneously, they are working towards their battery packs, high-voltage components, and rear-wheel-drive powertrains to deliver multiple options for fleets across the globe.

The Bollinger B2CC

The Bollinger B2CC is the world’s first and only Class 3 all-electric chassis-cab truck platform, and it offers unlimited work truck variants. ““The Bollinger B2 Chassis Cab’s unique features – including the 5,000-lb. payload and large energy source to power tools – make it perfect for businesses, small and large,” says CEO Robert Bollinger. “Commercial fleets will be able to reduce their overall cost of operation while buying a truck designed, engineered, and built in the USA. The B2CC is an ideal option for municipalities, parks services, emergency response vehicles, airports, construction, landscaping, electricians, plumbers, security, non-tactical military, and more The Bollinger B2 Chassis Cab will be built on the patent-pending Bollinger Motors E-Chassis all wheel drive base that underpins the Bollinger B1 Sport Utility Truck and the B2 Pickup. It will be available in both 2-door and 4-door cabs and on multiple wheelbase lengths.

BATTERIES ARE AT THE HEART OF IT ALL

They have been developing their own battery packs since day one. Their BMS (battery management system) has been developed in-house and are well suited to fit their Class 3 through 6 platforms

MADE IN THE USA

They are based in the Detroit area, right in the middle of the automotive action. The company’s aim is to source as many components and materials

built in the USA as possible, and to assemble the final product in the Midwest. THE ENVIRONMENT Their all-electric platforms are tailored to fit existing commercial truck bodies, which will help speed fleet adoption in a sector that has a significant impact on emissions and the environment. They are working with environmental organizations, suppliers, and engineering firms to create advanced solutions that will facilitate this necessary industry change. EVs are a fundamental part of the DNA at Bollinger Motors. They know that the future is electric, and as highlighted on their website they are fully dedicated to helping the world make that future become reality.

vershower is a portable shower which can recycle the water (fully self-contained) or run on continuous fresh water

Use indoors or outdoors. EverShower can be set up or packed down in seconds into its own 8kg (17 lbs) suitcase. Using the Evershower Position the EverShower wherever and however you like – outdoors,on your campsite,

in your Van, roof on, roof off, in any direction you like. Place the 12 volt electric pump into your water source – inside the tub (drain closed) if recycling, or outside the tub (drain open) for continuous fresh water. To recycle, just pour up to 15 litres of water into the tub (8 is ample). Use solar or stove heated water, or for real luxury, a portable water heater. Switch on the pump, step in and enjoy one fabulously, long, private EverShower virtually anywhere.

It is quick and easy to assemble, and comes with instructions but it is very well designed and we found it obvious how to put it up. It needs less than 1.75 m in height if assembling in a van. The shower plugs into a 12v cigarette lighter or a battery pack and it comes with a long cable to allow you to set the shower up inside

your campervan or outside of your 4wd . Just Boil a few litres of water, add it to 5-6 litres that are already in the tub and you have a warm 20 min shower. When you are done you can simply pump away the water or let it pour out via the drainage plug. The whole shower packs away in

omething that we have examined in the past and will so so again in the future, and a vitally important area for those of us who use our 4WD vehicles to explore remote and often difficult terrain is vehicle recovery, and specifically self recovery equipment that you can bring with you on your trip to help to ensure that you can recover your vehicle from a variety of possible ‘getting stuck’ scenarios. ARB’s vehicle recovery accessories are engineered and manufactured to the highest standards, making them ideal for recreational use as well as for competition. Whenever we know that we will be traversing unfamiliar or difficult terriain, we always ensure that we have some of this essential equipment on board. One essential bit of equipment is a set of ARB TRED Pro recovery boards, we have used these many times in sand, mud and on extremely boggy and wet grassy terrains. These boards are designed to get your 4×4, ATV and equipment out of trouble when traction is lost in sand, mud, sludge, or snow. Engineered and manufactured in Australia from high quality materials, TREDs are designed to handle intense levels of torque, flex, weight and impact. With a designated shovel feature,

extreme hex grip nodules, aggressive ramp entry teeth and ultimate wear resistant properties, TRED will allow you to explore with confidence, without letting traction disrupt your journey. Featuring a unique composite construction ‘EXOTRED’, TRED Pro are extremely durable, wear resistant and can handle high levels of flexibility; providing the ultimate traction by maintaining a high level of pressure on the tire while withstanding the flex of being under vehicle weight on less than stable ground. We also carry the ARB JUMP STARTER PRO , the lithium powered ARB Jump Starter has plenty of power to start a 12V vehicle with engine capacity up to 5L V8 Diesel or 6L petrol. Thanks to intelligent sensing and charging technology, when charg-

ing the jump starter from either the included AC or DC chargers, the inbuilt sensors prevent overcharging or undercharging of the lithium battery. When the time arrives to use the jump starter on a vehicle, the intelligent heavy-duty jump cables monitor battery voltage, polarity and charge condition alerting the user via a series of LED lamps to any potential installation problems. The Jump Starter itself measures just 188 x 134 x 37mm and weighs just 860 grams, but it has a potent lithium-ion battery with a 24,000mAh capacity. Even if it seems that you have all of your vehicle’s power requirements sorted and you’ve installed a dual battery system, charging system, solar panels and more, there’s still the pos-

sibility that one day your starting battery simply won’t have enough power to start your vehicle. And if this happens, you’ll be glad you’re carrying your ARB Jump Starter.

TIPS FOR

OFFROAD

DRIVING

S

o you have a 4x4 and plan on competing in a rally or getting to grips with some serious off-roading. Or perhaps you’re dreaming of overland adventures with wild camping under the stars? In this feature the experts from euro4x4parts Mecazine explain why it is so important to know your vehicle. Whatever your plans, it is important to know your 4x4

and have it set-up properly so that the vehicle is adapted to your requirements and the conditions it will encounter out in the field and therefore reduce the risks of breakdown or breakage. Different 4x4s and different setups can be intended for very varied uses. From week-end green-laning to overlanding, rally-raid and extreme offroading , etc. It is important to know your

4x4, it’s specifications and limits. You will then be ready to choose the right parts and accessories for your set-up. If you have a 4x4 and intend to enjoy green-laning, all-terrain tires and firmer suspension are a must. If your 4x4 is going to be used for long, overland journeys and perhaps wild camping, you will need: all-terrain tires, suspension lift, camping accessories and

navigation equipment. For rally-raid or competition use, in addition to a standard off-roadset-up, it may require complete vehicle modification such as reinforced body, roll bar, etc in order to meet safety standards. Finally, for extreme offroading, you will be looking at oversized all-terrain tires, so-called “extreme” suspension, hydraulic steering, a winch, roll bar, etc ...

From this, it becomes obvious that a basic 4x4 with stock set-up remains like any other vehicle and may not behave as expected as you push it over its basic limits. So here are some of the basics you need to know when choosing your 4x4 and set-up so that together they match you plans and requirements. One of the fundamental notions that determines just what your 4x4 is capable of is described in terms of “angles”. 1 - Approach angle The approach angle, also known as the attack angle, refers to the angle between the point of contact with the ground and the lowest element of bodywork at

the front of the 4x4. This is the angle at which an obstacle may be approached before the vehicle will touch it. 2 - Departure angle The departure angle similarly refers to the angle between the point of contact with the ground and the lowest element of bodywork at the rear of your 4x4. This is the angle at which you can leave an obstacle. 3 - Ramp angle The ramp angle, also known as the breakover angle, refers to the angle between the 2 points of contact with the ground and the lowest element under the middle of the 4x4. This angle determines the ability to clear an obstacle such as a ridge. This is angle is what makes the

Approach Angle

difference between long-wheelbase (LWB) & short-wheelbase (SWB) designs. The latter have a better ramp angle and therefore a better clearance ability.

design this is more often than not the differential.his is key value to take into account when heading over rocks or when both wheels run through deep tracks.

Clearance Ground clearance is the height measured between the ground and the lowest element of the vehicle. For a 4x4 with a solid axle

Conclusion: These angles as well as the ground clearance can be modified & improved to increase the offroad performance of your 4x4

whether you are on an expedition or competing. As we mentioned above, you can change the the suspension and tyres of your 4x4, for these kind of modifications. In terms of improving the ability of your 4x4 one of the first steps is usually to install a suspension lift kit.

The immediate effect is improved attack, departure and breakthrough angles. Euro4x4parts supplies kits with various lift options that cover a vast range of 4x4 makes and models.

URAS is the ancient Celtic word for Journey and we think it fits perfectly to describe our overall editorial philosophy. Originally, the Celts spread out across Europe from Central Europe ending up represented in many countries across Europe, and now over two thousand years later, we are looking to travel and traverse Europe again, though with more modern equipment. As keen campers we love nothing more than packing up our 4WD’s and hitting the tracks, in search of those perfect camping locations. We constantly strive to improve the magazine and to seek out the best and most useful Camping and 4WD products and accessories. In our free e-magazine we focus on high quality content that includes articles on all things camping, touring, fishing and 4WD adventures. From finding the best 4WD tracks, setting up camp in some of Europe’s most picturesque locations to cooking up some cracking camp cook feasts. This is all about discovering places off the beaten track and enjoying the great outdoors. We tour to the very corners of Europe and beyond, while reviewing and testing the latest top quality camping and 4WD gear. Our magazine is free to readers, and is supported by our advertising and brand partners, but this does not mean that the magazine is a glorified product catalogue, far from it. We focus on identifying top quality products and produce informative, interactive articles that explain the features and benefits of these products to our readers, and demon- strate how the products can be used to increase the comfort and quality of their camping and touring experiences. We also regularly produce short videos to demonstrate and showcase these products in use by our team. The magazine invites our readers to become a part of the story and join us on our own adventures as we, use, test and demonstrate these quality products from top brands.
