TupsleyVoice St Paul’s Celebrate

HAPPY 150 BIRTHDAY TH

2018 was the 150th Anniversary of St Paul’s Primary school being first built and opened in 1868. St Paul’s CE Primary School proudly celebrated its 150th birthday several times in 2018 and photographs of these celebrations can be seen on pages 6 & 7. Fairly uniquely, despite there now being a modern school, the original Victorian school is still standing, unaltered, alongside it. It was built mainly with very generous subscriptions from the very small Tupsley community. The Victorian school is alongside the current school playground, constantly reminding the current pupils of the school’s history.

Alongside is the Headmasters house, built at the same time. Both Victorian buildings are still in daily use by St Paul’s Church Nursery, and by St Paul’s Primary which has a music room there. Until the school was dedicated to St Paul in 1951 it was known as Tupsley School and unless the pupils managed at the age of 11, to pass entry exams to a Girl’s or Boy’s High School, or perhaps the Cathedral School, they stayed at Tupsley School until they started work – generally after their 14th birthday. It was not until Bishop’s School opened in 1958 that St Paul’s School no longer had Senior (ie 11+) pupils, though all the Senior Boys were earlier transferred to Whitecross School in 1955.

In June everyone at St Paul’s school relished the chance to be photographed from above on a clear and sunny day, in celebration of 150 glorious years (1868 – 2018) of schooling in Tupsley.
