Annual Review 2013

From the largest of TBM drives and the most impressive of grand scale cavern excavations, to the small diameter and microtunnelling works for urban infrastructure - all countries of the world were progressing development of their underground space for city expansion, energy needs and transportation connectivity through 2013.

It was a rollercoaster year for the Alaskan Way viaduct highway tunnel replacement project in Seattle, starting with great optimism following successful shipment, arrival, assembly and launch of the mega 17.5m diameter EPBM from Hitachi Zosen in Japan, and ending in deep disappointment with the machine on long term hold as the issues of failed main bearing seals are addressed.

Meanwhile in London, and with seven TBMs in the ground, Crossrail confirmed that the £14.6 billion project had reached the half way mark of the 42km of running tunnels and caverns for underground stations and crossovers (image above) required for the project.

Through 2013 the international industry recorded other significant achievements, advanced development of technical innovations and discussed important issues of influence. Into 2014, TunnelTalk continued its dedicated coverage of the international industry, further developing its TunnelTECH section and expanding its reporting of the global project activity.
