Annual Review 2010

In October 2010, an interim TBM breakthrough (as recorded above) connected all headings of the first tube of the 57km long baseline railway through the Gotthard Massive in Switzerland.

This was one of the historic events of 2010 recorded in the first edition of the TunnelTalk Annual Review. As a compilation of reports published by TunnelTalk during the year, the 11 editions of the Annual Review are a collective record of the major activity and developments in the global tunnelling and underground space construction industry across the decade. Following the first edition in 2010, there is an Annual Review yearbook of industry development for each year to 2020-2021.

In 2010, after the heady industry growth of the early 2000s, the deep and shocking collapse of the financial systems in 2008-09 had all sectors of the global economy reeling. Through 2010, the task for industry leaders and project managers was to hang on to belief in their projects and to convince governments of their viability and critical need. Through the pain some mega projects survived - the Alaskan Way mega-TBM bored highway tunnel project in Seattle and Crossrail in London high among them. Others did not - the ARC project under the Hudson River between New Jersey and New York being a high profile and costly cancellation.

At the same time, the underground option was being adopted throughout the world to comply with strict environmental regulations and social pressures, and to repair, expand and replace ageing infrastructure. There can be no doubt: the global industry is looking at extreme demand on its resources in coming years. This raised urgent concerns for the capacity of suppliers to meet that demand as well as the critical need for trained engineers and skilled tunnel workers to bring all to reality.
