Dual-mode TBM for rail drives in Sicily

A 9.98m diameter dual-mode TBM designed and manufactured in China by CREG has started excavation of the 6.7km twin tube section of the Cefalù to Castelbuono railway project in Sicily. Procured by Toto Costruzioni Generali to complete the project for Italian rail company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, the machine is of a special design to permit efficient conversion between closed EPB mode and open rock excavation.
