A recreational treasure, Turkey Mountain encompasses several hundred acres of rugged land less than a 15-minute drive from downtown. Turkey Mountain offers an escape from city life via a thick canopy of trees–and miles of hiking, mountain biking and running trails. Docents point out features of unique buildings and offer historical perspectives. Each second Saturday tour is different, but will typically include a visit to a lobby, a tunnel or maybe even an oil baron’s penthouse! On any given tour, you might see beautiful examples of Art Deco, Beaux Arts, Gothic Revival and Mid-Century Modern buildings.

Ella Fitzgerald kicked off the first concert in 1977. In 1965, S.E. Hinton penned a timeless classic at Tulsa’s Will Rogers High School library that has defined a generation for over fifty years. From Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film to the new Tony Award-winning musical, every adaptation of “The Outsiders” story finds its roots in Tulsa.

In March of 2016, Danny Boy O’Connor (former member of the hip hop group House of Pain) purchased the house that PonyBoy Curtis and his brothers called home in “The Outsiders” movie. Since then, the house has been refurbished to reflect what it looked like during filming. For fans of “The Outsiders” old and new, this is an essential stop just northeast of downtown Tulsa for behind-the-scenes stories, memorabilia, and more.
