Attractions Creek Council Oak Tree

The birthplace of Tulsa, this tree is where the Lochapoka Creek Indians kindled a ceremonial fire in 1836, using live coals they carried from their Alabama homeland over the Trail of Tears. Today, it is preserved as a park that includes an ethnobotanical garden and several commemorative sculptures.

Gathering Place

Named the 2018 Best New Attraction by readers of USA Today and Favorite Park by readers of TulsaPeople Magazine, Gathering Place is 66.5 acres of pure fun. The park represents a $465 million collaboration of more than 80 corporate and philanthropic organizations. Best of all, admission is free.

Sports courts invite basketball, volleyball, street soccer and street hockey players. A skateboarding park is the perfect spot for bored teens. Visitors of all ages will enjoy Gathering Place’s rotating art installations and regular programming, walking trails and varied dining options.

Admiral Twin Drive-in

Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios With his piercing blue eyes and rugged good looks, the 21-foot-tall space cowboy outside Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios can’t be missed. Installed in May 2019, Buck is a “Muffler Man,” a large, fiberglass sculpture originally used as advertisement in the 1960s. His likeness now finds a home on souvenir items like T-shirts, magnets, coffee cups and stickers, which can all be purchased at the 350-squarefoot gift shop along the Mother Road.

Ninety percent of the shop’s stock comes from Oklahoma artists, makers and craftsmen, and all of it celebrates Tulsa, Oklahoma or Route 66. There’s also a unique selection of vintage tchotchkes and knickknacks — an ode to the “curio” part of the business.

Greenwood Cultural Center and the Mabel B. Little Heritage House

In its glory days, Tulsa’s Greenwood District stretched for 35 blocks and was the largest and richest of Oklahoma’s more than 50 black communities — so wealthy, in fact, Greenwood was known as “Black Wall Street.” Shops bustled by day and clubs wailed blues and jazz by night. Today, the Greenwood Cultural Center and the Mabel B. Little Heritage House — the area’s only home built in the 1920s that still stands — present a permanent history of the district.

Mother Road Market

Located inside a 1939 grocery building, Mother Road Market is a 27,000-square-foot food hall that offers the food and wares of more than 20 local merchants.

From craft cocktails, to street tacos, to gourmet pizza, to “midwesterranean” rotisserie platters, to a plethora of desserts, Mother Road Market has something for everyone. Oklahoma Aquarium

With eight exhibit galleries and more than 1 million gallons of water, you can see the many mysterious and wonderful creatures of the ocean that now make their home right here in Oklahoma.

In the Polynesian Reef exhibit, visitors are invited into an exotic South Pacific coral reef surrounded by more than 500 colorful tropical fish of approximately 75 species.

Sharks swim over visitors’ heads as they walk through an underwater tunnel.

Another highlight is Sea Turtle Island, which has three viewing levels and an underwater observation station for children that allows them an up-close look while remaining dry.

ONEOK Field

Tulsa Garden Center, Woodward Park and Municipal Rose Garden

A wooded 44 acres in the heart of Tulsa, Woodward Park boasts flora and fauna that attracts nature lovers all year long. At the Tulsa Garden Center, you’ll find a Victorian conservatory and 3-acre arboretum. Linnaeus Teaching Garden is a demonstration garden that gives visitors a chance to improve their gardening skills.

Tulsa Port of Catoosa and Maritime Education Center Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021, the Tulsa Port of Catoosa is the head of the 445-mile McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System that links Tulsa with the world and foreign ports by way of the Mississippi River and Port of New Orleans.

The port’s maritime Education Center features hands-on displays and exhibits that teach children and adults about the port’s functions and purpose.

Home to the Tulsa Drillers — an AA affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers — ONEOK Field is at the northern edge of downtown Tulsa.

Tulsa’s professional soccer team, FC Tulsa, also plays at ONEOK Field. The club, which started as Tulsa Roughnecks FC in 2015, is part of the United Soccer League.

The team plays home matches between March and October.

Route 66 Historical Village

From 1942-1947, the Frisco 4500 provided passenger service daily from St. Louis to Tulsa to Oklahoma City, and for years greeted visitors at the Tulsa Zoo. Today the restored locomotive awaits visitors eager to learn about the history and development of Tulsa’s oil, refining and transportation industries. An oil derrick commemorates the 1901 oil discovery in nearby Red Fork that started Tulsa on its path to become the one-time “Oil Capital of the World.”

Tulsa Botanic Garden

The Tulsa Botanic Garden sits on 170 acres of prairie and woodlands, with the rolling Osage County hills offering panoramic views of sunsets and skyscrapers.

The Children’s Discovery Garden is a fantastical wonderland featuring a tree fort and a hidden grotto.

Sixty acres of nature trails and floral terraces display a diverse collection of ornamental and flowering plants. Learn about updates to the master plan at the visitor center; when the garden is complete, guests will be able to explore 60 acres, including a lotus pool and an all-seasons garden. Architecture hot spots Much of Tulsa’s downtown was built in the 1920s, when the city was dubbed the “Oil Capital of the World.” The era’s popular art deco style, with its sharp angles and complex details, lavishly celebrated the booming economy.

Found in the Cathedral District, six of downtown’s earliest churches, including Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, have stunning art deco elements. The district is bordered by the southern end of the inner dispersal loop, East Sixth Street, and West Denver and South Detroit avenues.

Two nonprofits offer walking tours to explore the city’s art deco architecture and downtown network of underground tunnels: • Tulsa Foundation for Architecture: Themed tours are on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. They typically sell out. Visit tulsaarchitecture.com/tours.

• Tulsa Historical Society: Tours are on the last Friday of the month (except for November and December, when they are moved up a week to avoid holiday conflicts) and start at 10 a.m. Private group tours and self-guided tours also are available; visit tulsahistory. org. GREENWOOD RISING

Little Heritage House The Greenwood Cultural Center serves to acknowledge the history and resiliency of its community through pictorial exhibits and educational and cultural opportunities. Though the Center is currently closed due to COVID-19 guidelines, over $5 million in grant funding will allow for coming renovations to the Center’s current facilities and digitizing of exhibits. Program Coordinator Mechelle Brown says exhibits will be accessible virtually by the first half of 2021.

Visitors also can tour the Mabel B. Little Heritage House — a magnificent and innovative structure for the 1920s, which offers a glimpse of how prosperous, successful and hardworking Greenwood residents were. It was owned by survivors of the Race Massacre and was relocated to its current site.

Greenwood Rising Tulsa’s Greenwood District, aka Black Wall Street, was one of the most prosperous African-American communities in the United States before the Race Massacre of 1921. Greenwood Rising, a state-of-the-art history center, will soon stand at the entrance of the Greenwood District honoring the legacy of Black Wall Street and sharing the area’s stories in three galleries, according to Project Director Phil Armstrong. The first will tell the story of the spirit of the Black community in the early 1900s. The second will focus on the Race Massacre within the national context of the period, along with the resilience of the community that rebuilt the area to see it destroyed by social and economic factors. The third will follow the road to reconciliation. Commissioned by the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission, the museum is projected to open in fall 2021.

GREENWOOD AVE. | TULSA2021.ORG/RISING OKPOP The Oklahoma Museum of Popular Culture, located in the Tulsa Arts District, will showcase the creative spirit of many famous Oklahomans and the influence of those artists on popular culture around the world. The Museum’s fully immersive experiences will encapsulate TV, movies, literature, comic books, pop art and music, according to Meg Charron-Webb, OKPOP deputy director. The museum's “Gold Room,” will host concerts, panel discussions, banquets and interactive floor-to-ceiling digital experiences. There will be a small theater for film, a first floor “listening lounge,” and a large terrace overlooking historic Cain’s Ballroom, as well as the Tulsa skyline. The projected opening is late 2022.

Bob Dylan Center Opening 2021 in the Tulsa Arts District, the Bob Dylan Center will be the primary public venue for the Bob Dylan Archive® collection, featuring a priceless, never-seen-before collection of more than 100,000 items spanning Dylan’s career. CHERRY STREET/15TH STREET East 15th Street, east of South Peoria Avenue This distinctive area, at one time considered the suburbs east of Tulsa, offers fine dining, jewelry, antiques and beautiful architecture. Boutiques, restaurants and salons make this district an interesting place to wander.

THE BOXYARD 502 E. Third St. | tulsaboxyard.com Inspired by an iconic London development, the Boxyard is a micro-mall constructed of repurposed shipping containers. Shops sell men’s, women’s and children’s fashion; skateboard gear; and candy, snacks and drinks.

You’ll also find various dining options, such as the Open Container Restaurant and Bar, Sabores Mexican Cuisine and Rose Rock Microcreamery.

Popular finds include midcentury modern furniture, but 1970s and ’80s decor also has been rising in popularity.

Hinrichs also co-owns vintage store XGoods in the same space, which carries furniture, clothing and other wares.

The market is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month (check Facebook for exceptions).

First Friday Art Crawl Experience free art exhibits, live music and performances from 6-9 p.m. at the First Friday Art Crawl, which brings more than 3,000 Tulsans and visitors to downtown galleries, studios and museums.

Guests can get an inside look at the artists’ process through Archer Studios, 109 N. M.L.K. Jr. Blvd. The building houses the studios of the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, a program designed to recruit and retain artists. Most Tulsa Arts District galleries and museums offer free First Friday admission.

Gilcrease Museum Gilcrease Museum is one of the country’s best facilities for the preservation and study of American art and history. The museum draws thousands of visitors from around the world to the hills just northwest of downtown Tulsa.

The museum offers an unparalleled collection of Native American art and artifacts, as well as historical manuscripts, documents and maps. Its Kravis Discovery Center uses an interactive discovery trail to create an immersive educational experience.

Themed gardens have been developed on 23 of the museum’s 460 acres. Gilcrease also offers tours, workshops, musical events, lectures and a restaurant.

This year, Gilcrease will present the Eddie Faye Gates Tulsa Race Massacre Collection, full of eye-witness accounts, photographs, recorded survivor stories and other narratives of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art The region’s largest Jewish museum, the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art features distinctive architecture and beautiful artwork. The museum also includes educational exhibits and programs on Jewish culture, history, religion and art, from ancient times to presentday Oklahoma, including the Herman and Kate Kaiser Holocaust Exhibition. Additional galleries host international exhibitions and those from the museum’s collections. This year, the museum added a second floor and 1,200 square feet.

Kendall Whittier, the area around East Admiral Boulevard and North Lewis Avenue, is one of Tulsa’s oldest shopping districts. Today it is a rapidly expanding artist community.

Key to the revival was the rehabilitation of Circle Cinema, 10 S. Lewis Ave., opened in 1928. With $3 million in renovations, Tulsans Clark Wiens and George Kravis — with help from the City of Tulsa — saved Tulsa’s oldest theater. Now Circle screens independent and art films, and hosts film festivals and other events.

Find colorful clothing, accessories and art at the Kendall Whittier Mercado, which meets May through October from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., on the first and third Saturdays. Every second Thursday of the month, the district hosts an art walk, currently with art in business windows, art drops and giveaways.

In 2020, the Tulsa Farmers’ Market found a new home in the district and plans to resume Saturday markets in April 2021.

Philbrook Museum of Art

Philbrook has evolved from a grand family estate to one of America’s finest art museums, showcasing collections from around the world.

Educational programs for all ages, a diverse permanent collection, traveling exhibits and lush gardens draw more than 150,000 visitors per year. On the second Saturday of each month, Philbrook offers free admission, art supplies and activities to children and families. The grounds also feature an edible garden and a permanent installation of a full-scale log cabin.

Events range from the Internet Cat Video Festival to the MIX cocktail battle to Films on the Lawn. A master plan to re-envision the historic building and grounds is in development.

Whether you’re a novice or a skilled glass artist, the nonprofit Tulsa Glassblowing School provides an outlet for creativity, teamwork and self-expression.

At Redbud Valley Nature Preserve, visitors can traverse the 1-mile trail through a variety of habitats, including limestone slopes and bluffs, and see native plants and animals that call the preserve home. The preserve, 16150 Redbud Drive in Catoosa, is a mere 20-minute drive from downtown and has been managed by the City of Tulsa and Oxley Nature Center since 1990, in cooperation with the Nature Conservancy.
