FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to Tulsa! T-Town is a city built on ingenuity, motivation, resiliency and a can-do spirit. While experiencing the sights, sounds and tastes this city affords, be sure to strike up a conversation with someone local, as our people are our greatest asset. Whether you’re here for business or pleasure, make the most of your visit. I hope these pages inspire you during your stay. There are world-class museums and award-winning restaurants. Numerous neighborhoods and districts are ready for exploration. Catch a game, a movie or stroll through one of the city’s countless parks and green spaces. Shop at the many locally owned shops, galleries, bakeries and businesses. Throughout the city you will see the Tulsa flag. It pops up on everything from flagpoles to murals adorning buildings to mugs, T-shirts and souvenirs, and even beer (Dead Armadillo’s Tulsa Flag blonde ale lives up to its fanfare). Since its debut in 2017, the Tulsa flag bears many symbols. The blue represents the Arkansas River. The horizontal yellow line symbolizes the 1901 discovery of “black gold.” The shield reflects the Native American

4 Tulsa Guest Guide

tribes who were removed to the area. The red circle within the shield represents the blood shed and lives lost during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. A beige star is a nod to Tulsa’s many art deco masterpieces, as well as a representation of the city’s bright future. At the bottom, the beige field reflects the warmth and community found in the city. Try and tally how many Tulsa flags you see on your visit. You might lose count. There is so much to see and do. Happy exploring! Anne Brockman EDITOR

MUSIC AND NIGHTLIFE Wade Bowen plays Cain’s Ballroom

After its first life as a garage, the legendary Cain’s Ballroom — which will celebrate 100 years in 2024 — became the home of Western swing, jitterbug and sock hop. It was just a good old-fashioned dance hall turned legend by Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Renovated in 2013 by the current owners, today Cain’s hosts top acts many nights of the week, and new shows are added all the time. Be sure to wear your walking shoes at this intimate 32 Tulsa Guest Guide

venue with a reputation for rocking. Most Cain’s concerts are standing room only. Mac’s Barbecue serves its signature ‘cue inside Cain’s during most shows. Lovingly described as architecturally resembling a giant roll of silvery-gray duct tape, this is where greats like Paul McCartney, Madonna, Justin Bieber and Cirque de Soleil have graced the stage. Words to the wise: Purchase tickets online and find parking early. Nearby Italian restaurant Ti Amo, 219 S. At The Colony you’re likely to find outstanding local talent jamming with an arena headliner who “happened to be passing through.” Magic happens here. “The venue is known for helping to cultivate the Tulsa Sound, both old and new,” says Heidi Tindle, the venue’s owner since 2017. “A lot of people know us for red dirt music, but we strive to bring diversity to our bookings, from red dirt to hip-hop and everything in between.” Local musicians frequent this dive bar once owned by the legendary Leon Russell. “What makes the Colony special is the community of artists who make us their home away from home,” Tindle says. “It’s incredible to see a musician walk into the venue and get called up on stage. All of these guys are capable of playing with each other at a moment’s notice and that community coming together regularly is what truly makes the Colony special.”

THE CHURCH STUDIO

If you’re looking to catch an all-star orchestral performance, a production of the Tulsa Ballet or Tulsa Opera, or a touring Broadway show, the four-theater Tulsa Performing Arts Center is the venue for you. Opened in 1977, the Tulsa PAC replaced the then-Brady Theater (now called Tulsa Theater) as the City of Tulsa’s municipal auditorium with a premiere concert by Ella Fitzgerald. Celebrity Attractions, a Tulsa-based presenter and producer of national tours, presents its shows at the PAC and has one of the most successful Broadway seasons in the country, according to CEO Kristin Dotson. In recent years, the PAC Trust has emphasized “the arts for all.” Its Orbit Arts initiative partners with local organizations providing arts education and experiences to the masses. 110 E. MERCURY LOUNGE Both daytime dive bar and nighttime music mecca, Mercury Lounge is your neighborhood jackpot for rustic roots and Americana melodies, as well as local and touring acts that span the gamut. “We’re committed to providing a safe space for all music fans, a professional experience for the working musician and a fast drink at a fair price,” says general manager Ashley Kirkley. “We have resident artists bringing some of Tulsa’s best original music every day of the week. There are also ticketed shows featuring some of the best touring acts in the nation.” Mercury’s website offers performance schedules in addition to a merch store, full of punk rock hoodies, T-shirts, koozies, hats and poster packs.

CHURCH STUDIO: GREG BOLLINGER; TULSA BALLET: JOSH NEW/COURTESY TULSA BALLET

TULSA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Legendary musician and songwriter Leon Russell purchased a Tulsa church in 1972 and renovated it. The building began life in 1915 as Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the city’s earliest churches, but for a brief time it became the epicenter of a music scene that resonated well beyond the city limits to the greater world of rock and roll. The Church became a creative space for songwriters, musicians, engineers and singers. Major industry talent such as Tom Petty, Phoebe Snow and Peter Tosh recorded at the Church Studio, along with nationally acclaimed Tulsa-based acts like The GAP Band, JJ Cale and Russell himself. The Church Studio also was the home base for Shelter Records, a record label started by Russell and British producer Denny Cordell. Many point to Church Studio as the epicenter of what later came to be known as the Tulsa Sound: that hard-to-define, potent, shuffling stew of rockabilly, country, rock and roll, and blues associated with Russell, Cale and Eric Clapton. In 2016 entrepreneur Teresa Knox purchased the Church Studio. Today it is a recording studio, exhibit space, event center, audio engineering school, an archive for the Leon Russell and Tulsa Sound collections, and a shop for Church merch. “It’s so magical what happened here,” Knox says. “It’s just a very magical, incredible time in our city’s history.” Reserve tickets for an on-site private or group tour.

FIRST FRIDAY: VALERIE WEI-HAAS; BOB DYLAN CENTER: TIM LANDES

MUSEUMS AND ART SPOTS

FIRST FRIDAY On the first Friday of the month, the downtown Tulsa Arts District is abuzz. Experience free art exhibits, live music and performances from 6-9 p.m. at the First Friday Art Crawl. First Friday brings more than 3,000 Tulsans and visitors to galleries, studios and museums — providing a great opportunity to mingle with the local masses, catch a street performance or two, and generally take in Tulsa’s sights and sounds. At Guthrie Green, vendors set up to sling locally made goods and a Tulsa artist entertains the crowds. THETULSAARTSDISTRICT.ORG

BOB DYLAN CENTER Acquired by the George Kaiser Family Foundation in 2016, the Bob Dylan Archive highlights the unique artistry and worldwide cultural significance of Bob Dylan. The archive is now permanently housed at the Bob Dylan Center in the Tulsa Arts District. This three-story building faces downtown Tulsa’s hugely popular public gathering space, Guthrie Green, and depicts a rare 1965 image of Dylan, donated to the center by renowned photographer Jerry Schatzberg. The center offers curated exhibits pulled from the priceless collection of more than 100,000 items spanning Dylan’s career. 116 E. SHERWIN MILLER MUSEUM OF JEWISH ART The region’s largest Jewish museum, the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art features distinctive architecture and beautiful artwork. The museum also includes educational exhibits and programs on Jewish culture, history, religion and art, from ancient times to present-day Oklahoma, including the Kaiser Holocaust Exhibition. Additional galleries host international exhibitions and those from the museum’s collections. 2021 E. 71ST ST., 918-492-1818, JEWISHMUSEUMTULSA.ORG 50 Tulsa Guest Guide

One of Tulsa’s most beautiful neighborhoods is the setting for Philbrook Museum of Art, an Italianate villa built on 23 lush acres by oilman Waite Phillips and his wife, Genevieve. Philbrook, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has evolved from a grand family estate to one of America’s finest art museums, showcasing collections from around the world. Numerous educational programs for all ages, a diverse permanent collection, traveling exhibits and lush gardens draw more than 150,000 visitors per year. This year, look for exhibits featuring works from the Wyeth family of artists, the photography of Brett Weston and a collection of works by Native artists using floral designs to preserve culture and history. Special Philbrook events range from the Internet Cat Video Festival to the MIX cocktail battle to Films on the Lawn. 2727 S. ROCKFORD ROAD, 918-748-5300, PHILBROOK.ORG

OKEQ GALLERY Oklahomans for Equality (or OkEq) was founded in 1980 by a small group of people concerned about human rights and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. OkEq opened Oklahoma’s first LGBT Community Center in October 1996. Thanks to fundraising from the Pyramid Project capital campaign, OkEq opened its first permanent building, the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center, on Jan. 23, 2007. The Equality Center is home to a diverse, vibrant and engaged community of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, knowledgeable staff and dedicated volunteers. Each month, the Equality Center gallery spotlights work by local artists. Meet the artist at their First Thursdays gallery openings, held from 6-9 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. 621 E. The museum, archives and performance venue honoring the Okemah-born troubadour opened in 2013 and sits in Tulsa’s Arts District across the street from Guthrie Green. The facility honors Woody Guthrie’s life and legacy by educating visitors, teachers and students about his relevance today and his role in American history. Learn about the Dust Bowl, see the original handwritten lyrics to “This Land is Your Land” and so much more.

THE OUTSIDERS HOUSE MUSEUM In the early ’80s, Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola came to Tulsa to catapult S.E. Hinton’s memorable characters off the pages of “The Outsiders” onto the big screen. Rather than use a Hollywood back lot, the filmmaker and crew transformed an ordinary Tulsa neighborhood into a fully functioning movie set. In 1983, “The Outsiders” film was released, featuring a cast of young, talented actors who would go on to become household names. Stepping into the museum gives fans young and old a chance to see rare and never-before-seen photos, movie artifacts and more. Even if you’re a longtime fan of “The Outsiders,” you’re bound to see and learn something new.

TULSA GLASSBLOWING SCHOOL Whether you’re a novice or a skilled glass artist, the nonprofit Tulsa Glassblowing School provides an outlet for creativity, teamwork and self-expression. In recent years the school moved from the Tulsa Arts District to an empty recreation center in McClure Park. There, TGS operates an open-access hotshop and kiln studio, where it leads guests in one-time hotglass experiences, multi-week classes and private lessons. “It’s a unique experience for anyone interested in the beauty of glass art,” says TGS Executive Director Janet Duvall. The school, which partners with local schools and youth programs, also offers VETri, a therapeutic glassblowing program for military veterans, provided at no cost to them. It is one of only two such programs in the U.S. 7440 E. SEVENTH STREET, 918-582-4527, TULSAGLASSBLOWING.ORG Tulsa Guest Guide 53

GREENWOOD RISING

Tulsa is home to a plethora of arts events, and Living Arts of Tulsa is frequently behind them. Part venue, part facilitator of arts programming, Living Arts describes itself as “a platform for evolving ideas and aesthetics, interdisciplinarity and community empowerment through exhibitions, workshops, performances, films, lectures and education.” The New Genre Arts Festival, one of Living Arts’ biggest and most well-known events, features some of the most stimulating and thought-provoking visual and performing arts in the nation, according to festival organizers. Living Arts also presents the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Arts Festival each November. The popularity of this festival is due in large part to Tulsa’s active and considerable Hispanic and Latino communities. Expect to find traditional and contemporary Latinx dancers as well as mariachi and salsa bands. Many ofrendas erected by artists and groups honor their loved ones.

Greenwood Rising is a history center sharing the story of Black Wall Street before, during and after the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. From May 31-June 1, 1921, white mobs destroyed 35 blocks of the city’s prominent Black community of Greenwood. Designed by Local Projects, the team behind the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, the immersive Greenwood Rising experience begins with a video introduction. Then, visitors “cross the tracks” to learn about the history of the district. In one section, visitors take a seat in a “virtual barber’s shop” to better understand racist sentiments of the day. They also have the opportunity to make a personal commitment toward racial reconciliation that is added to a wall of positive messages upon exiting the museum. The $18.2 million Greenwood Rising center was funded with local and state dollars and private donations. Tickets are required.

PARKS

The City of Tulsa has 135 parks and six community centers for ample recreation opportunities. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, children can cool off in one of the many swimming pools, free splash pads and water playgrounds scattered throughout the city. Tulsa County boasts 10 parks with trails, golf courses and more. Find a city or county park near you at maps.cityoftulsa.org/parksfinder and tulsacounty.org/parks. Walkers, runners and cyclists will find plenty of trails and paved paths throughout Tulsa RiverParks, 800 acres of land stretching along the Arkansas River. Visit riverparks.org for a map of trails.

GOLF

Located just off the Broken Arrow Expressway at South Yale Avenue, the hard-to-miss Climb Tulsa facility is among the largest climbing gyms in the nation. It offers 17,000 square feet in which to train or climb for fun and is accommodating to all ages, founder Jason Burks says. For younger climbers, the gym has a separate, less difficult climbing area and hosts various kids’ camps that teach climbing skills. An avid climber himself, Burks had seen massive climbing gyms in various cities across the country. He decided Tulsa needed something similar. “You’re not going to find a city the size of Tulsa with a gym this cool,” he says.
