Cultivating Connection

In a city rich with artistic talent, connection can be just as vital as creativity itself. That’s the driving force behind Create Tulsa, an initiative from the Tulsa Performing Arts Center designed to bring artists, organizations and art lovers together under one collaborative vision.

Launched in February 2025, Create Tulsa was born out of a simple but powerful idea: while Tulsa’s arts scene is vibrant, many artists and organizations often operate in isolation. By creating intentional spaces for connection, the program seeks to bridge those gaps, helping individuals and groups discover one another, share resources and build something greater together.

Over the past year, Create Tulsa has become a growing hub for creative exchange. Through quarterly mixers, the program offers relaxed, welcoming environments where relationships form organically, often leading to future collaborations and projects. These gatherings are open to everyone, from seasoned professionals to those just beginning to explore their creative interests.

Beyond networking, Create Tulsa provides meaningful resources for the community. Panel discussions have tackled timely topics such as the role of AI in the arts and how to build a sustainable creative career in Tulsa. Handson workshops, ranging from sewing to writing, highlight diverse artistic disciplines while making creative experiences accessible and engaging. The program has also supported local artists and organizations through sponsorships and collaborative opportunities, further strengthening Tulsa’s creative ecosystem.

Looking ahead, the team behind Create Tulsa will continue to expand its reach with upcoming events like community mixers, a clothing swap in partnership with Oklahoma Fashion Alliance and biannual town halls. These town

halls invite artists and community members to share ideas, voice concerns and help shape the future of the local arts scene, ensuring the program remains responsive and community driven.

At its core, Create Tulsa is about belonging. It’s a space where connections spark inspiration, where collaboration replaces competition and where the entire community plays a role in shaping Tulsa’s cultural landscape.

Whether you consider yourself an artist or simply someone who appreciates the arts, Create Tulsa invites you to be a part of the conversation. Because when creativity is shared, the entire community benefits.

The Discovery Awards Return with a Few Surprises

Tulsa’s brightest young performers are once again ready to take center stage as the Discovery Awards return to our Chapman Music Hall stage this spring. Presented in partnership with Celebrity Attractions, this highly anticipated program celebrates excellence in high school musical theatre across eastern Oklahoma, while offering students an experience that reaches far beyond the spotlight.

Each year, arts adjudicators attend participating high school productions, recognizing standout performers for their talent, dedication and stage presence. From these productions, top students are nominated to take part in an immersive workshop week — an intensive, week-long program led by award-winning creative professionals. This experience culminates in a live showcase on the TPAC stage, where nominees perform for a live audience.

At that showcase, two outstanding performers, one male and one female, will be selected to represent eastern Oklahoma at the National High School Musical Theatre

Awards — also called the Jimmy® Awards® — in New York City. There, they participate in another week of elite training before competing on a Broadway stage in front of top industry professionals.

This year’s Discovery Awards ceremony will take place on Friday, May 29, at 6:00 p.m., promising to be an evening of celebration, artistry and unforgettable performances.

While the heart of the program remains the same, with each participating school sending its top two performers to the workshop week, exciting new elements have been introduced to elevate the experience even further.

Among the most notable additions are four new acting categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Each category will feature up to eight nominees, all of whom are eligible for the prestigious Jimmy Awards nomination and will participate in the workshop week. In a dynamic twist, each category will also be showcased through its own medley performance during the ceremony, highlighting the incredible range of talent across the region.

The program has also expanded its recognition of technical and design excellence. Students specializing in areas such as lighting, costume design and stage management will now have increased opportunities for nomination, professional mentorship and hands-on experience. These nominees will also take part in workshop week, reflecting the program’s commitment to nurturing every aspect of theatre production.

Workshop week has grown into a comprehensive training ground for aspiring theatre artists. In addition to performance-based masterclasses, students will now have access to symposiums on directing, stage management and design, as well as specialized sessions in areas like classical theatre, improvisation and theatre for young audiences.

The live ceremony has also been reimagined to deliver a more polished, high-profile experience.

Inspired by the structure and energy of major awards shows, the evening will feature special guest announcers, streamlined

performances and a stronger focus on individual categories. Alongside the acting medleys, audiences can look forward to featured performances, including a custom-choreographed tap number celebrating Route 66 and a tribute medley honoring our upcoming production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!

More than just an awards program, the Discovery Awards are a launchpad, empowering students, building confidence and connecting young artists to the professional world. Join us on May 29 to witness the next generation of performers take their first bow on a truly grand stage.
