From putting on an annual show free to all Tulsa Public Schools’ kindergarteners to huge stage spectacles, the Tulsa Performing Arts Center is making its mark on local theatre, creating incredible theatre. This year, we’re thrilled to be producing our fresh, new take on Fiddler on the Roof. The production will play in the John H. Williams Theatre August 16 through September 1, 2024. The show will feature local actors, singers and dancers, led by a creative team and technicians who also call Tulsa home.
Giving local artists the opportunity to work creatively in our city is an important mission for our team at the TPAC. We’re honored to make this opportunity possible for local artists, and we are dedicated to curating an incredibly special and spectacular production for our community to enjoy.

Gideon’s Army, her first documentary as a budding director, followed the lives of three Black public defenders working in the South. American filmmaker Dawn Porter’s career did not start where you may think. She attended law school and became an attorney. When a colleague was hired by a national media company, Porter opted to leave the firm and go too. What started with this media company as a litigious job soon led to a study on whether media storytelling did what it set out to do: tell a real story and get to the truth of the matter.
Through this study, Porter became more and more interested in how attorneys’ stories are told and how the story of our entire legal system is presented by TV series, movies and other media. How, she wondered, could one of the most important professions, the only one listed in our Constitution, be seen in such a terrible light.
Porter points out that most young attorneys become public defenders to do right by people, to ensure justice, so how did they come to be portrayed in such a negative way? Porter also noticed that dramatized versions of legal proceedings failed to hold up to the real thing. She notes: “More than 95 percent of people accused of crimes don’t have a trial. ... Because of Law and Order, you think almost everybody is going to trial. Most people are taking a plea, whether or not they did it, they are taking a plea. ... The United States has the most people incarcerated in the world.”
Currently, Porter is working on a new piece, which documents a public defender who worked tirelessly to get six innocent people out of incarceration. “That shouldn’t be America,” says Porter.
She continues: “I don’t think anybody who loves America should be proud of that. We want a just system, not just a system.”
To Porter, this problem is at the core of the perception most people have of attorneys and public defenders. The problem doesn’t stem from corrupt and lying lawyers; the problem stems from the unjust system itself.
Many public defenders are only in their 20s, working their first jobs, Porter notes. They often have upward of 100 cases ongoing at any given time. Those 100 cases mean 100 names, tied to 100 people, tied to 100 families, all demanding time and energy to save their loved ones. Porter asks, “Could you do a good job?” Considering those circumstances, most would be doubtful at best.
That is where, for Porter, the importance of as-true-to-reality-as-possible storytelling comes in. Her first film, Gideon’s Army, was started out of an interest in telling the stories of the three litigators she follows, not out of a love for filmmaking. In fact, at the time, she thought that would be her only film. Lucky for all of us, the love of storytelling through film wasn’t done with her after the completion of her first documentary.
While her films haven’t all been focused on public defenders or lawyers themselves, it is the stories that draw Porter in. She says: “I love stories that tell you something about something you think you know. We think we know what being a public defender is, but we don’t really know anything about it.”
“There are stories everywhere,” She continues: “What would you want the rest of the world to know about where
you come from, the beauty and the tragedy? You’re in the best position to tell authentic stories about the place where you come from. We all have pride and regret about the places we come from, but we all want to be seen. ... Interview your grandparents, interview your parents. That’s what is going to tell a fuller picture of America. I believe we are more alike than divided, and I think storytelling can help us get to that place where we remember ‘I can disagree with you politically, but I can respect you as a person.’ I hope that storytelling helps that.”

PARKING Convenient underground parking is located west of the building, accessed from Second Street. Event parking also is available in several lots across the street to the east and south of the TPAC. Prepay available at https://promo.parking. com/performing-arts-center-event-parking/.
ADMISSION AND LATE SEATING Lobby doors open two hours prior to an event. Chapman Music Hall doors normally open 30 minutes prior to curtain. The remaining theaters open 30 minutes before curtain. Late seating is at the discretion of each sponsoring organization. Latecomers may be temporarily held out of the theater or asked to take seats at the back if available.
TICKET OFFICE HOURS are Monday through Friday 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In addition to regular hours, it opens two hours prior to curtain for events scheduled in Chapman Music Hall. The Second Street ticket office, 110 E. Second Street on the north side of the building, opens two hours prior to each curtain for tickets to events scheduled that day in John H. Williams Theatre, Liddy Doenges Theatre or Charles E. Norman Theatre.

BUYING TICKETS ONLINE Buy tickets at tulsapac.com using VISA, DISCOVER or MasterCard. Print your tickets at home or pull them up on your mobile device using the print at home option. Tickets will be scanned by ushers at the door.
EXCHANGES The ticket office gladly exchanges tickets to events with more than one performance, subject to certain guidelines. Otherwise, all sales are final.
GROUP SALES AND BUILDING TOURS Group discounts are available. Please call 918-596-7109 for group sales assistance. Tours of the TPAC are offered free of charge and last approximately 45–60 minutes. Arrangements may be made by calling 918-596-7122.

WITH DISABILITIES All Performing Arts Center facilities are accessible to persons with disabilities. Please ask about wheelchairaccessible seating when purchasing your ticket. Parking is located on the street level of the parking garage near the TPAC elevators. Use the south elevator to reach Chapman Music Hall. Restroom facilities are located in the Third Street Lobby for Chapman Music Hall events, and adjacent to the John H. Williams Theatre Lobby for events in the TPAC’s other theaters. The TPAC has a Listen Technologies RF system to assist the deaf and hard of hearing. It is available at coat check for Chapman Music Hall events. Ask the house manager on duty for equipment for the Williams, Doenges and Norman Theatres. Devices are provided at no cost.
