Dear Friends, It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you back to the Tulsa Performing Arts Center for the 2015-16 performance season. I know you will be engaged and enriched by the entertainment you enjoy in the upcoming months at Tulsa’s home to the arts.

Events from 18 arts organizations are detailed here chronologically and by presenter on our Season Highlights page. Also listed in these pages are add-on shows to regular season packages and events presented by national promoters.

Entertainment at the Tulsa PAC is broad and diverse. Numerous forms of dance, music and theater and a lecture series are offered throughout the year. Many events are in keeping with what you look forward to and expect from longstanding arts organizations, and then there are shows that will intrigue and might surprise you.

MISS SAIGON

PARSONS DANCE

NEXT TO NORMAL

Based on the beloved opera Madama Butterfly, Miss Saigon is an epic musical by Les Misérables creators Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil. It is the popinfused love story of an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl, set during the tumultuous Vietnam War.

This New York City-based company is known for its sexy athleticism, exuberant personality and joyous movement. The company’s style is a fusion of modern dance vocabulary and the discipline and precise execution one expects from a classical company.

Winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, this unique hybrid of hard-rock musical and hard-hitting drama is about a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effects that her illness and the attempts to alleviate it have on her family. THEATRE TULSA

HALF LIFE A highly visual and emotional experience of fierce urgency, the latest multimedia production from Cloud Eye Control is an imagistic, visceral work inspired by the nervous fear felt in the wake of natural or manmade disasters.

The starting point for this piece was blogs written by women who experienced the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis.

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA with Wynton Marsalis Fifteen of jazz’s leading soloists draw from an extensive repertoire that includes music composed by Marsalis, Ted Nash and other orchestra members, along with the masterworks of Ellington, Mingus, Coltrane and others. SISTEMA TULSA

QUARTETTO DI CREMONA These gregarious Italians charmed CMT audiences with their musical grace and sparkling sound in 2013. This season, they bring their Mediterranean style to music from Mozart, Webern and Brahms.

Charlie’s plan to end it all in his upscale Jersey Shore beach home is interrupted by an unexpected visit from Emma, a British ex-pat and real estate agent. Emma and a call girl, along with the town’s drug-dealing fire chief, hang out with Charlie to cheer him up in this dark comedy by Zach Braff. THEATRE POPS

TIME FOR THREE This string trio plays an eclectic, highenergy mix of bluegrass, jazz, folk and hybrid styles. Returning to the Choregus season by popular demand, Tf3 has performed in jazz clubs and at Carnegie Hall, European festivals, NFL games and the Indy 500.

JAMES CARVILLE: Politics Today and Tomorrow

No-holds-barred political commentary combined with wit and a Louisiana drawl have earned James Carville the nickname “Ragin’ Cajun.” A strategist whose pivotal role in Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign was featured in the documentary The War Room, Carville teaches political science at Tulane University. The timeless tale of the good-hearted kitchen maid who wins the heart of a prince is told through this G2K (Getting to Know) presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. The script has been condensed to better suit the younger set, and the plot is slightly altered to highlight important lessons.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS Come home to the PAC for this new family and community holiday concert. Area choruses, handbell choirs and soloists join Tulsa Symphony as everyone enjoys familiar favorites and a carol sing-along, all conducted by Ron Spigelman.

Charles Dickens’ heartwarming tale traces money-hoarding Ebenezer Scrooge’s overnight journey to redemption, illuminating the meaning of the holiday season in a way that has resonated for generations. A longrunning Tulsa tradition, the musical was written by Bob Odle and Richard Averill.

THE NUTCRACKER Featuring 100 local children, this holiday classic tells the story of a young girl, Marie, whose fairytale-like dreams are filled with enchanting characters. Mixing the visuals of a Broadway show with delightful dance, Marcello Angelini’s The Nutcracker is accompanied by the Tulsa Symphony performing Tchaikovsky’s score.

A young prince who is trapped by a spell in the body of a Beast must prove that he is capable of loving and being loved, or he and his household will be doomed. Belle, a lovely young woman, may be the one who can transform the Beast, if only she can fight off her boneheaded suitor, Gaston.

DAVID L. BOREN: Fighting for America’s Future

This former U.S. senator and Oklahoma governor has served as president of the University of Oklahoma for more than 20 years.

Boren is widely respected for his longtime support for education and for his distinguished career as a reformer of the American political system. TULSA TOWN HALL

One of Broadway’s longest-running shows and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, this extraordinary musical tells the poignant story of the struggles and triumphs of life on Broadway.

Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Kinky Boots’ inspirational story follows a struggling shoe factory owner who works to improve his business with the help of Lola, an entertainer who needs a sturdy pair of stilettos. The unlikely pair find they have more in common than either dreamed possible. The score is by Cyndi Lauper. CELEBRITY ATTRACTIONS

Two young people in love try to overcome the obstacles put in place by their feuding families in Shakespeare’s enduring tale. The romantic balcony scene, swordplay between rivals, and the music of Prokofiev performed live by Tulsa Symphony are all part of a highly romantic and tragic ballet choreographed by Edwaard Liang.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

Pregnant and unmarried, Lila Wilson was run out of town 27 years ago under a dark cloud of moral indignation. She has since become a very wealthy, successful real estate developer in New York City. Now she has returned to the North Carolina farm where she was raised to seek revenge against the people who treated her so unkindly.

This compelling story is told through the eyes of six-year-old Scout, the tomboyish daughter of small-town lawyer Atticus Finch. As a tense tug of war between justice and racism heats up, Atticus and his family must temper violence and hatred with courage and compassion.

SPIRIT AND AWAKENINGS From Respighi’s majestic setting of Bach’s Wachet Auf (Sleepers Wake) and Mendelssohn’s transcendent Reformation symphony (No. 5) to Beethoven’s depiction of peasants rejoicing after the storm (Symphony No. 6), this program celebrates the desire to renew the human spirit.

RENT Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today.

BULLETS OVER BROADWAY Based on the screenplay of the acclaimed 1994 film by Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath, the musical is directed by Tony Award winner Susan Stroman. This is the story of a young playwright who, in desperate need of financial backing for his next show, accepts an offer from a mobster. CELEBRITY ATTRACTIONS

Maestro Zander is passionate about classical music and helping others realize their own untapped love for it, encouraging new experiences and new connections. MAHLER’S RESURRECTION SYMPHONY In this two-part concert experience, conductor Benjamin Zander discusses and demonstrates the themes and structure of Mahler’s “Resurrection” symphony. During the second part, Zander, TSO, Tulsa Oratorio Chorus, and virtuoso soloists will present Mahler’s epic score in its entirety.

Czech choreographer Jirí Kylián’s sublime Petit Mort is danced to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 in C, incorporating six men, six women and six fencing foils. Also on the program are Classical Symphony, choreographed by Yuri Possokhov, and Christopher Bruce’s swaggering Rooster, performed to the music of The Rolling Stones. TULSA BALLET

DUO AMAL Yaron Kohlberg and Bishara Haroni are the pre-eminent pianists of their generation in their respective homelands: Israel and Palestine.

GENERAL KEITH ALEXANDER Alexander is a retired four-star general of the United States Army who served as Director of the National Security Agency, Chief of the Central Security Service and Commander of the United States Cyber Command. His talk is titled “A Road Map to Freedom: The Strategy of Effective Cyber Security.”

PETER RABBIT TALES Enchantment Theatre brings Beatrix Potter’s captivating stories to the stage using fantastic masks, whimsical puppets, gorgeous scenery and original music. The creatures in Mr. McGregor’s garden come to life as they encourage Peter Rabbit to rescue the Flopsy Bunnies from a disagreeable badger. TULSA PAC TRUST

This popular concert event celebrates the genius of America’s greatest musical team with bigscreen moments from beloved film masterpieces like The Sound of Music, The King and I, South Pacific and Oklahoma! — all accompanied by the live symphony orchestra conducted by Ron Spigelman.

Playwright Christopher Durang turns political humor upside down with this provocative satire about America’s growing homeland “insecurity.” The play tells the story of a young woman in crisis: Is her new husband, whom she married when drunk, a terrorist?

Anchored in El Sistema (Venezuela’s social and music education movement) and American classical conservatory traditions, this exciting ensemble combines the best of both worlds. The principal clarinetist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Ricardo Morales, joins the quartet in Tulsa.

Following the popular biblical tale, Camille Saint-Saëns’ Samson and Delilah features Dana Beth Miller opposite Frank Poretta. Tulsa Opera joins forces with Tulsa Oratorio Chorus and Portico Dans Theatre for this lavish production. Sung in French.

ALTON BROWN LIVE! THE EDIBLE INEVITABLE TOUR

This engaging family show featuring the Food Network TV star includes a pinch of comedy, talk show antics, a multimedia lecture, live music (he sings!) and a dash of “extreme” food experimentation (ponchos are provided for those in the first few rows), and of course...puppets.

Terrence McNally’s funny and powerful 2014 play portrays a woman who pays an unexpected visit to the New York apartment of her late son’s partner. He has married another man and has a young son. Generations collide as she revisits the past and begins to see the life her son might have led.

Adapted from the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film and William Steig’s 1990 book, Shrek: The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure featuring 19 all-new songs

by Jeanine Tesori. All the beloved characters from the film come to life on stage with Tulsa Symphony performing the magical score. It is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and all irreverent fun for everyone.

On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the Greek island they last visited 20 years before. Some of ABBA’s best-known hit songs, like “Dancing Queen,”“Waterloo,”“VoulezVous” and “Super Trouper” propel Catherine Johnson’s sunny, funny tale. The musical continues to delight audiences the world over.

This quintessential backstage musical comedy tells the story of Peggy, a starry-eyed dancer who comes to New York to audition for a new Broadway musical.
