ToGather will feature the coziness of our monthly Bibi-Dibi gatherings blended with the best of hands-on Jewish early childhood educational experiences and relationship-building for parents and children alike. This program is geared toward families with children under 4 years old and will run on a quarterly basis. Our theme this month is Let’s Do a Mitzvah!

Rachel Laser, the newly appointed President and CEO of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, will join us for a Table Talk dinner and discussion addressing the topic “Religious Liberty in the Era of Trump: Where We Are and Where We’re Going.” Dinner will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the talk to follow at 7:00 p.m. No reservations are necessary for the talk and dessert reception, but please visit our website and make reservations if you plan to join us for the meal. The very first sermon I wrote in Rabbinical School was a little piece on the meaning of Sukkot. It tackled an issue I thought was interesting (and still do): why do we trim trees and grasses to cover the sukkah? Wouldn’t it be nicer to set the sukkah under a tree, and let green, living boughs serve the purpose of a roof? Either that or a spreading vine. Imagine a grape arbor used for a sukkah,

It wasn’t much as a sermon, then or now, but I still like some of the things I said. I tried to argue that Sukkot was a reminder about our relationship with the earth and our role as stewards. If the Bible is right, we are fated to be cultivators: planting, reaping, and otherwise tending the earth. Our tradition allows us the yield of our fields, but requires that we protect the land that supports us. That means never more than we really need. The schach (vegetation) that covers the sukkah has to be just enough to shade those who dwell in it, but not so much that it shuts out the light.

The cultivator is permitted to cut vegetation for Sukkot, but his hand needs to be light and respectful.

SHABBAT FOR EVERYONE

A monthly, musical, Shabbat celebration. This is a destination for joyful singing, lively dancing, and vibrant communal experiences. At 6:15 p.m., we will begin with a special Shabbat dinner. We cook and clean so that you can truly enjoy the pleasures of a restful Shabbat. By 7:00 p.m., we will be singing, storytelling, and experiencing the warmth of Shabbat at B’nai Emunah. No reservations are necessary for the service, but please RSVP for the meal by visiting our website or calling the Synagogue office.

I hope that we’re doing a better job than before. As you may have heard, we’re getting serious about sustainability. Led by Betty Lehman, our professional family and volunteers, we turned in a stellar performance this summer. During our debut season as participants in Score3card, Sustainable Tulsa’s program to raise environmental consciousness and performance, we limited our consumption, recycled like crazy, and built a record of excellence in composting. The result of all of this is that we exceeded expectations, rising to silver in our first round of effort. Bronze is below us. Gold and platinum are above.

SISTERHOOD MEMBERSHIP BRUNCH

An annual complimentary brunch and program for members of Sisterhood. This year’s brunch will take place on Sunday morning, October 28, at 9:30 a.m. In addition to a delicious brunch, those attending will have the opportunity to hear Lori Carpenter, an expert in Genetic Counseling, discuss the inspiring breakthroughs in genetic testing and how mapping your DNA can help you with disease prevention. It was nice to be recognized, but there is more to come. We’ve just gotten word that we are slated to be 2018 Bellmon Award winners for groups that contribute to the well-being of the planet. This is a very high honor, bestowed by the Bellmon Family and a panel of judges with expertise in the field. At the end of November, we’ll attend the Award Banquet and then go back to the serious business of improving our performance.

FEATURED EVENT FOR OCTOBER RACHEL LASER VISITS THE SYNAGOGUE

We Are and Where We’re Going.” The goal of these dinners is to stimulate interesting conversations amongst the community inspired by the reflections of thought leaders. The Shabbat dinner table is meant to be a place of equality and introspection. Table Talks helps us reach that goal.

Americans United for the Separation of Church and State is an important Washington, D.C. based non-profit dedicated to ensuring a strong separation between church and state as a means of protecting religious freedom. For nearly a century, Americans United has been an important advocacy voice leading conversations on marriage equality, government aid to private religious schools, and the role of partisan politics in religious institutions.

Before the RAC, Rachel directed the Culture Program at Third Way, a Washington, D.C. progressive think tank specializing in understanding and reaching moderates. There, she launched the “Come Let Us Reason Together” initiative, which mobilized evangelical Christians and liberals to work together on critical issues including women’s reproductive freedom and LGBTQ equality. She also helped draft the first-of-its-kind common ground abortion bill to be introduced jointly by pro-life and pro-choice members of Congress. Rachel is a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Chicago Law School.

Newly appointed President and CEO Rachel Laser will visit the Synagogue for a Table Talks Shabbat dinner on Friday, October 12. This will be her first visit to Oklahoma in her capacity with Americans United. Rachel Laser has built a significant career engaged in some of this country’s most pressing political issues. Formerly the Deputy Director of the Religious Action Center (RAC) of Reform Judaism, Laser’s Jewish identity plays an important role in her work as a lawyer, advocate, and strategist.

SHIR CHADASH: A NEW SONG

Jillian Lieberman, just back from Ramah in the Rockies, delivered a lovely speech about her summer experience at Shabbat for Everyone in August. Here's her talk:

It feels like yesterday that I was boarding a plane to Tulsa for my in-person interview here at the Synagogue. I had somehow been convinced by Rabbis Fitzerman and Kaiman to visit Tulsa and check out the Synagogue, a mere 5 days after speaking on the phone with them. They asked me to prepare a lesson to teach a 2nd and 3rd grade class on the topic of my choosing. While that topic of the lesson has become foggy, I remember schlepping my guitar on a tiny plane from Denver to Tulsa in anticipation of teaching the class the blessing for learning Torah. While it had been a few years since I had been in the classroom, I knew that singing a song would tie everything together and (hopefully) leave an impact. You know how this story ends, but what I began on that very first day in the Synagogue, has continued to stick with me over the last two and half years.

My name is Jillian Lieberman. I have been a camper at Ramah in the Rockies for two years. I think it is a really good experience to enjoy being a part of a Jewish community.

I’m the only Jewish child in my school, so it is hard to explain what’s going on in my life of Judaism when no one else understands. At Ramah, it’s a whole different experience because everybody shares the same beliefs.

At Ramah, we get to go horseback riding, mountain biking, rock climbing and on masa (which means sleeping outdoors, hiking, and being closer to nature). On Shabbat at camp, everyone showers after lunch to prepare for something special. We all sing and dance and hook up arms and it instantly feels like we are all a family.

Music in Jewish education is highly important to me as an educator. Jewish music brings people together, makes liturgy easy to follow along with and helps to teach our children Jewish values, history, and Hebrew. And this stuff doesn’t leave us quickly; I still remember singing Zum Gali Gali in my Pre-K class, and I am still singing the Shabbat chicken soup song with our own preschool students.

I must say a very big thank you to the Synagogue and our Jewish community for providing support and making sure I could go. Also, a big thank you to Morah Sara and the Rabbis for their encouragement. So, if you go to Ramah, you may get homesick like I was, but now that I’m home, I am Ramah sick and can’t wait to get back there! If you ever are lucky enough to go, you will thank your parents everyday until you go back.

When I began my work here, I knew that music would be an important part of our school community. I started right away by shifting the end of the school day to be dedicated to teaching the classic Jewish songs of my own childhood, songs of the holidays, and the trendiest Jewish songs to hit summer camps around the country. At the head of this school year, I am proud to say, I am starting to see the fruits of that labor come to life. I’ve heard from parents about their students singing songs in Hebrew during the week, at bedtime, in the shower, and while eating breakfast. My Jewish educator heart jumps when I hear from students requesting songs for the end of the school day on Sundays.

However, the most telling part of this evolution is with the boys in our older grades who, several times this year have spontaneously broken out into song. While playing a game that involved clapping, these young men began singing Siman Tov u-Mazel Tov, and while waiting in the chapel before Ne’ilah this year, requested to stand on the bimah to lead the group in song.

I have built many Sukkot in my lifetime. There is real poetry and power embedded in the practice of physically creating a space to satisfy a command of our tradition.

Sometimes the building process goes smoothly (this year I am happy to report that our home Sukkah went up in just forty-five minutes!) But other times, the process is much more stop and start with many trips to and from Home Depot defining the experience. No matter the result, constructing a temporary dwelling in our backyards is a meaningful practice which draws our attention to the idea of shelter, instability, and our relationship with the natural world. For many of us who live in safe and stable housing, we can take for granted the benefits afforded by this basic necessity. Sukkot is a helpful reminder of our privileges. At the same time, it highlights the need for shelter and housing in our community.

It is not too late! Our Membership Drive continues this month and we seriously want you! The simple truth is that homelessness is a real and pervasive issue in our city. The most recent data shows a 7 percent increase in homelessness over the last decade. Causes are varied, and often it takes the concerted efforts of many to help an individual or family get to a position of safety and stability. And so Sukkot reminds us of our work.

Dues can also be paid at the door when attending the Membership Brunch. Save the date and watch for information on reservations.

Over the past several months I have been truly impressed by the outcomes of our congregational effort to provide care kits for the homeless. The straightforward idea has given our community a tangible way to respond to the faces of homelessness we encounter as we navigate our city. My sincere thanks to Jolene Sanditen and our Sisterhood for the leadership of this initiative. This ongoing project is one good way to help us respond to the pervasive challenge of homelessness in Tulsa.

CARE KITS FOR THE HOMELESS Jolene Sanditen reports that Sisterhood volunteers put together 100 Care Kits for people who are in need of personal care items. Sisterhood wants to thank those who contributed donations for the kits recently prepared. If you want to pick up a few Care Kits to keep in your car to pass out to a homeless person, you can find these Kits at the Synagogue.

Jolene is continuing to chair this project and sets as our next goal an additional hundred Care Kits! This project can use white tube socks, travel size shampoo, soap, lotion, combs, memo pads, disposable razors and individual snacks such as pudding cups, applesauce cups, juice boxes and other shelf stable items.

Sarah-Anne Schumann has continued to bring our members together to serve breakfast every fourth Sunday of the month at Iron Gate . If you are age 13 or older and want to join the Iron Gate Breakfast Club, contact Sarah-Anne at

Another project which has been personally meaningful to me recently is Family Promise of Tulsa County. Just over a year ago, I joined a group of faith leaders from across Tulsa to explore how we could bring this project to our city.

Family Promise is a cost-efficient, effective, and sustainable community response to family homelessness. Capitalizing on the resources of congregations and existing community resources, Family Promise provides temporary housing and social services to families experiencing the challenges of homelessness. With the support of 13 host congregations, Family Promise began serving the Tulsa community this past July. The intentionally interfaith endeavor is a growing opportunity to link disparate areas of Tulsa’s faith community in productive volunteerism. If you are interested in learning more about this approach and ways to get involved, please reach out to me directly.

As part of the Jewish Film Festival, Circle Cinema will be showing a “short” entitled Women in Sink, starting at 7:00 p.m. This is an excellent documentary set in an Arab hair salon in Israel where both Israeli and Arab clients converse candidly with the hair stylist (who is also the film’s director) about life, love, and politics.

Following Women in Sink, the feature film is Keep the Change, which begins at 7:00 p.m. This film is a romantic comedy about persons with autism (acted by people with autism), and is tender-hearted and thoroughly disarming.

The cost for the dinner is $10, payable to B’nai Emunah Sisterhood, and tickets to the films will be paid to the Circle Cinema by those attending the movies.

Sukkot, it turns out, reminds us of one more essential lesson. Sometimes, you have to gather your materials and build a solution yourself. Sometimes the solutions will come quickly. Other times, it will take much longer to see the results of your efforts. Either way, we should feel empowered to work towards a better world.

FROM THE SYNAGOGUE ARCHIVE

Before Sukkot is long gone, take a look at this undated photograph from the Synagogue files. The figure on the right is Bea Lifsics, surrounded by her students during the fall holidays. Although the young student to the left of Bea is holding a lulav and etrog, the other children are already preparing for Simchat Torah. The telltale sign is the flags they hold. Each is topped with the classic combination of an apple and a candle.

Although the photograph is not dated, the rompers and the saddle shoes suggest that it’s the 1950s or early 1960s. The tile floor identifies this as a scene in the Nadel Education Building. Can anyone out there help us identify the children in the scene?
