With over 600 people filling the Synagogue sanctuary, Rise Up Singing 2017 was a thrilling evening for all involved.

We sang our hearts out and felt the bonds of community, hope and tradition. I didn’t know much about BBYO until I came from New York to the Midwest. It wasn’t part of my growing-up experience in Detroit, and I was preoccupied with Jewish camping during graduate school. BBYO was a kind of revelation—a student-run organization that cut across denominational boundaries and connected our kids across national borders. The BBYO story in Tulsa is about passionate volunteer investment and a highly involved student community.

I’ve learned a lot from watching closely and it has affected the way I think about Midrasha, the community high school program we run with Temple Israel. After many years of trying, we’ve made some gains when it comes to building a sense of family and community. There’s an academic component in Midrasha 2.0 (as there should be), but it’s in balance with experiential learning and the need to offset the isolation that some of our students feel. Almost invariably, they are singletons in their grades, without the social support of other Jewish students. We’ve built community formation into the new DNA of the program, and we’re exposing students to passionate Jewish adults ready to speak of their personal lives, their hopes for Tulsa, and the way they think about Jewish identity.

I hope that parents will take a second look at the program and encourage their high schoolers to do the same. I’m a maximalist when it comes to our high school students. We want them to be part of BBYO and fully engaged with their peers in Midrasha. All of us hope that they will put a toe in the water and see something new on Wednesday evenings at the Synagogue.

journeys. Look for balloons, confetti, noisemakers, crepe paper, willow branches, sequins, masks and feathers! The evening is filled with joyous song and treats for all. of the liturgy. It is punctuated by the blowing of the shofar by a large group of volunteer shofar blowers. Please remember that childcare is always available at Synagogue events; all we need is sufficient notice to plan.

Sukkot occupies an unparalleled place on the Jewish calendar.

It’s a great harvest festival; after weeks of introspection, we go outside to celebrate in our wonderful surroundings. Yom Tov services will take place on October 5 and 6, beginning both mornings at 9:00 a.m. Assuming beautiful weather, we will chant services in the sukkah. We’ll shake lulav and etrog and connect with the world beyond the confines of permanent structure.

SHABBAT FOR EVERYONE: SUKKOT

Join us for the traditional finale to B’nai Emunah’s holiday celebrations, as members and friends gather following services for the annual Simchat Torah Luncheon. Lunch is complimentary; reservations are not necessary. Weather permitting; we will eat for the last time in the sukkah. Simchat Torah services begin at 9:00 a.m. Our thanks to the Zarrow Families for underwriting this final luncheon of the holiday season.

Congregation B’nai Emunah is delighted to invite the entire community to the single most ginormous Sukkah celebration in Oklahoma. We’ll gather in the sukkah on the south lawn of the Synagogue. We hope that members and guests will be thrilled by what they see. Sukkot Dinner will be supported as always by a gift from Jenny Brouse and Brian Brouse. A joyful Shabbat Sukkot celebration led by the members of Klay Kodesh, B’nai Emunah’s vocal and instrumental ensemble, will follow the meal. Special games, toys and experiences await! SIMCHAT TORAH DINNER + DANCING

The Synagogue will conclude its celebration of the Fall Holiday Season beginning with Simchat Torah on Thursday evening, October 12. The night begins at 5:45 p.m. with a beautiful dinner in the Synagogue sukkah prepared by Alin Avitan and Co. Call us the Synagogue Office or visit our website to make your meal reservations. At 6:45 p.m., Simchat Torah festivities commence in Kaiser Miller Auditorium. The congregation will celebrate the conclusion of the annual Torah reading cycle with whirling processions around a chuppah (wedding canopy) led by Rokday Emunah, the Synagogue’s dance ensemble.

A community-wide effort to foster continuing education, the Adult Institute of Jewish Studies provides high-quality instructors teaching a variety of courses each year. Claire enjoys musical theatre, and is a particular devotee of the musicals Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen. She performed the role of Grace in the musical Honk, produced last year by the Holland Hall Middle School.

Claire has loved the mountains and desert air in Santa Fe since she was a small child, and she chose Santa Fe as the location of her bat mitzvah. Claire has two older sisters, Olivia and Julia. She is the granddaughter of Herbert and Harriet Aaronson of Chicago, and the late Morris and Bernice Butkin. She looks forward to celebrating her bat mitzvah surrounded by close family.

Possessed of an inquisitive mind, Claire has always loved books and reading. For her bat mitzvah project, Claire hopes to provide funding for the Tulsa Dream Center’s Literacy Is for Everyone program (LIFE). The LIFE program offers supervised instruction and after-school mentoring to Tulsa-area children. Claire hopes in particular to enable more children to have access to Chrome books.

program of Ramah in the Rockies and it’s the only Jewish wilderness-based recovery and treatment program for Jewish young adults. While the BaMidbar team is here over the first weekend of December, we will offer several opportunities to hear about their new program, and discuss the mental health of young people. We’ll be working on how to talk to your teen about mental health issues and how teens can identify when they or their friends might need help. Please keep an eye out for further information about these important events.

One of my favorite parts of my job is working with our teens. Whether mentoring madrichim, teaching in Midrasha, helping with a BBYO event, or working with a teen to prepare a haftorah, I find a great deal of satisfaction in working with our youth. Our teens are inquisitive and thoughtful, eager to impact those around them, and excited about being a part of this special Jewish community. I myself had many wonderful Jewish experiences as a teen, and I know the importance these programs and relationships have in shaping our future Jewish community and the individual lives of our young people.

I feel strongly that the health and well-being of our young people should be one of our highest priorities as a Jewish community. We have a great responsibility to lift up our young people and to support them as they journey into adulthood.

Over the last month or so, an article has been passed around the Jewish educators’ circuit about how our teens face different (and perhaps surprising) trends and challenges than teens before them. In the Atlantic’s Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? Jean Twenge reviews her study on the impact of smart phones on our teens today. The article highlights teens’ dependence on smart phones for social interaction and their impact on teens’ feelings of loneliness and even depression.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE Our ESL classes are now up and running again, and we have a much more substantial program than before. We have added another group of students (Russian speakers from the former Soviet Union) and are looking for more volunteers to help us with this endeavor.

The study found teens less likely now to push their parents to get a driver’s license, to hang out with friends in person, and to date. Teen pregnancy rates are down and, for the first time ever, rates of teen suicide rank higher than those of teen homicide. While some of these changes might be welcomed, our teens’ increasing susceptibility to struggles with mental health issues is cause for great concern.

Help us further the growth and success of this important project of helping refugees in our community. Volunteers are needed both in the classroom with adults and in childcare with young children.

Jewish ritual practice and our own Jewish community offer a great deal to offset these trends and, perhaps more importantly, to connect families with resources and support. We are primed to create opportunities to unplug (enter Shabbat!) and connect with other teens. Through programs like student teaching, Midrasha, and BBYO, our teens are positioned to interact with others; to be a role model to younger students; to build relationships with other Jewish teens like themselves; and to be in relationship with caring Jewish adults. Our programs encourage teens to unplug from their screens and plug into the people and community around them.

Teens’ feelings of depression, anxiety or loneliness—regardless of their cause—are real and important to notice. As educators, advisors and parents, we are often looking for the right words to say to support our teens and might not know where to turn in times of concern.

HEARING AND LISTENING

The Oklahoma Jewish Film Festival is scheduled at the Circle Cinema for October 22 to 25. Save the date for a Sisterhood gathering at the showing of the film The Women’s Balcony on Tuesday evening, October 24.

Growing up in Florida, talk of hurricanes becomes something like background noise. It is not that we don’t take them seriously, quite the contrary. But the regular threat of these natural disasters does something to desensitize us to the catastrophic predictions and the potential reality we know is a possibility. It’s difficult to hear, even when we know we’re supposed to listen.

This film was a Critic’s Pick by the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. The plot revolves around the collapse of the women’s balcony in an Orthodox synagogue, leaving the rabbi’s wife in a coma and the rabbi in shock. The congregation falls into crisis. A charismatic young Rabbi David appears to be a savior after the accident, but slowly starts proposing his fundamentalism to take control of the rebuilding. This tests the women’s friendships and creates an almost Lysistrata-type rift between the women and men of the congregation. The strong cast brings both humor and understanding to the film.

The S’fat Emet, a Hasidic commentary from the 19th century points out something helpful as we consider the challenges of listening. It says, “The living soul constantly hears […], but this is hidden from us. [In order to find understanding you must] listen to that which you are already hearing.”

As my colleague Rabbi Adam Greenwald points out, hearing is an involuntary act. Unless we have lost our hearing to physical illness, or are wearing gigantic sound-proof headphones, we are constantly taking in the wounds of the world around us.

We may choose not to look, choose not to taste, choose not to touch, but we cannot choose what to hear.

So the challenge remains, what do we do with the blares of warning or the pleas for assistance. None of us has endless resources. Responding to every request for assistance or solicitation for donations would quickly deplete us. These are some of the most critical questions we face.

VOLUNTEER AT IRON GATE

But I think there’s a lesson to be learned from the way Floridians respond to the threat of hurricanes and Oklahomans respond to the threat of tornados. We hear the warnings, and we treat them as serious. But we employ our own sense of judgement and evaluation to sense how critical a situation may be. We choose to listen carefully and process the information available to us.

The fourth Sunday of each month provides an opportunity for congregants to serve breakfast at Iron Gate, from 8:15 to 10:30 a.m. Volunteers need to be 13 years or older. This important project has been very successful.

SISTERHOOD MEMBERSHIP BRUNCH

The more accustomed we become to a particular weather threat or a particular social challenge, the better versed we become in how to respond. Our challenge is to develop those instincts and put them into practice over time.

Kristi Tarabolous has announced that our annual complimentary Membership Brunch will be held on Sunday, October 29, at 9:30 a.m. at the Synagogue.

In the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, many will be moved to action. As eager contributors to a better world, we have the opportunity to listen carefully and find ways to help others on their path forward.

Our featured speaker will be Monica Bein, nationally known expert on Generational Poverty: Breaking the Cycle.

Monica’s presentation is both timely and important, as we involve ourselves in programs of social justice.
