SEASONAL AFFECTIVE AMBIVALENCE I hate taking down my Sukkah. At our house, we have one of those kits you can buy online, so the work is not very hard. All the parts are interlocking, and no tools are necessary. But still, it always takes me a bit longer than I’d like to admit to get my act together and deconstruct that temporary dwelling space. The truth is, it takes me so long to pull the Sukkah down because I really love it when it is up. Of course, for me, the Sukkah fulfills all cultural and religious demands of the season. It is a prompt and reminder to spend more time outside. It is a signal to our neighbors of a small way in which we are different from the rest of Tulsa, and it is just a charming space to sit and read a book. So I don’t like taking it down because it means I am giving up something I truly enjoy. Yet, I know that in this act of demarcation of the season, I am doing something important for myself. By pulling the pieces apart and carefully storing them for next year, I am making a statement about what I hope and wish for the year ahead. It is precisely because I take down the Sukkah every year that I know I will once again get to delight in its construction and presence when this time rolls around again soon. It turns out that by doing something I don’t want to do, I enable something that I very much do want to do. And in that is a reminder of the cyclical nature of our tradition. We love and celebrate in the moments we have, and we count on being able to revel in the moments that lie ahead.

In these actions, we express hope and make a statement about how we relate to this world around us. So while I may not like the feeling I get when I pull that Sukkah apart, in my actions I make a statement about how I want the world to work. As we look forward in our year, so may we be able to say goodbye to these good moments, knowing that they will come again.

A 60 Minutes correspondent and former anchor of the CBS Evening News, Scott Pelley has been telling the important stories for nearly 30 years. In his new book, Truth Worth Telling, Pelley offers a collection of inspiring tales that remind us of the importance of values in uncertain times. SHABBAT FOR EVERYONE | POLAY+APPLE
With open doors and open arms, welcoming Shabbat with community is a wonderful way to start your weekend. An optional communal meal accompanies this service so that your Shabbat can be truly restful and restorative. This month we’ll celebrate the upcoming wedding of Maya Polay and Dancey Apple with an aufruf blessing. Join us! Many of our young people will be in their handmade capes and crowns, and we’ll call out all the names on our November yahrtzeit list. No reservation is needed for the celebration at 7:00 p.m. But please call or visit our website to make your meal reservations. Dinner begins at 6:15 p.m.
It’s the greatest bread ever. Each month we gather on a Wednesday to mix dough so that you’ll have enough for two challahs the following Friday afternoon. Novice baker? A prolific writer of fiction, Alexander McCall Smith is responsible for the international phenomenon The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, the Isabel Dalhousie Series, the Portuguese Irregular Verbs series, and the 44 Scotland Street series. McCall lives in Scotland and is a retired professor of medical law. He tours widely and will be joined in conversation by Teresa Miller. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m.

BAR/BAT MITZVAH: THE JEFFY COUSINS
GOING DEEP It’s one thing to strike out on your own, but we’ve taken a different approach at B’nai Emunah. Many of our most important projects are cooperative ventures with other agencies and institutions. As you can see from this issue, we do a lot with Magic City Books. The Altamont Bakery brings us together with the Mental Health Association | Oklahoma. We’re in close, loving relationship with All Souls Unitarian Church, and we’ll be working on a Race Massacre effort with Metropolitan Baptist. The potential in each case far outweighs the challenges and I’m proud that we can keep so many balls in the air.
The Synagogue notes with pride the upcoming joint b’nai mitzvah celebration for Oliver and Emma Jeffy. Oliver is the son of Dr. Elon and Kate Jeffy. Emma is the daughter of Elena and Brandon Jeffy. These first cousins have diligently prepared for this occasion and we look forward to a joyous event. This Shabbat morning celebration will begin at 9:00 a.m.

FAMILY DAY OF SERVICE
ShulSchool and Hebrew Language Lab students and their families are invited to our Annual Family Day of Service as we prepare for the Thanksgiving season. On Sunday, November 24, families will join their children for a day of intergenerational learning, celebration, and action. Throughout the morning we will explore our responsibility as Jews to stand up for change in our community and to help those who are hungry. We will be joined by the local non-profit, Hunger Free Oklahoma, to learn about poverty in our state and how we can make a difference in a new way. The morning will run during the regular ShulSchool hours.
One exceptionally bright spot is our strategic partnership with Catholic Charities. We’ve worked hard with Deacon Kevin Sartorius and his staff to build out a first rate program in English as a Second Language, one of the ways Catholic Charities works with immigrants and refugees. Thanks to the support of the Sharna and Irvin Frank Foundation, we’re running a best-practices program focused on citizenship. That means a busy classroom at the Synagogue operating three days each week. We’d now like to take the next step together which promises additional gains in the area of immigration. Our idea is to relieve the professional staff of the agency so that lawyers can serve a larger number of clients. Trained by Catholic Charities professionals, we hope to do the nuts-and-bolts work of the office. Every hour we spend will be an extra hour for the lawyers, including our own member, Michael Abdoveis. Let’s help them deal directly with their hard-pressed clients so that they can resolve the complications of asylum and immigration.

DR. SHELDON BERGER On Saturday, November 9, 2019, Dr. Sheldon C. Berger will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his bar mitzvah.
Adam Arbital, son of David Arbital and Emilyn Potter, will become a bar mitzvah on Saturday, November 2, corresponding to 4 Cheshvan, 5780, at Congregation B’nai Emunah.
On October 25, 1969, Sheldon became a bar mitzvah at Congregation Ahavat Achim in Wichita, Kansas, surrounded by his beloved parents, Herbert and Lila Berger, along with his siblings Milton, Dodi, and Steven Berger. Sheldon led the congregation in prayer, chanting from the Torah and reciting the Haftorah portion of Lech Lecha.
Adam is a seventh grade student at Edison Preparatory School, where he is in the gifted and talented program and is a member of the debate team. Adam is an avid gamer and is partnering with the organization Game Changer for his mitzvah project.
Please join Sheldon, Molly, Michael and Sarah for this milestone occasion as Sheldon will once again chant from the Torah and recite the Lech Lecha haftorah. Following the service, the community is invited to a celebratory kiddush luncheon.
He is the brother of Andrew and Bethany Ross, and Joshua Arbital. Preparations for his bar mitzvah have been led by Greg Raskin. A dessert kiddish will follow the service.

In addition to daily services in the afternoon, our members are welcome to attend Shabbat for Everyone. That’s the joyful monthly celebration at the Synagogue intended for all ages and levels of experience. On November 15, we’ll gather at 7:00 p.m. and announce all the yahrtzeits observed this month. BAR AND BAT MITZVAHS AT THE SYNAGOGUE [CONTINUED] THE JEFFY COUSINS Oliver Solomon Jeffy, son of Kate and Elon Jeffy, and Emma Rebecca Jeffy, daughter of Elena and Brandon Jeffy, will become b’nai mitzvah on Saturday, November 23, corresponding to 25 Heshvan, 5780, at Congregation B’nai Emunah. Emma, from San Diego, California, and Oliver, are first cousins and only three months apart. Instead of two separate events, the two families decided to join the celebrations together and have a b’nai mitzvah service in Tulsa. Oliver (above) is a seventh-grade student at Monte Cassino Middle School, where he is an honors student. He enjoys building computers, learning about electronics, and cruising with his family. Oliver is the grandson of Ed and Anita Ulrich of Tulsa, Allan and Elaine Jeffy of Tulsa, and Shari Burks of Phoenix, Arizona. He is the older brother of Simon. Preparations for his bar mitzvah have been led by Greg Raskin. Emma (below) is a seventh grader at Pacific Trails Middle School in San Diego, California. Emma enjoys skateboarding and other outdoor activities, hanging out with friends, and listening to music. She is extremely excited to share her bat mitzvah with her cousin Oliver and to have her ceremony in the same sanctuary at B’nai Emunah where her father and uncles celebrated their b’nai mitzvah many years ago. Emma is an active participant in many activities at Beth Am Synagogue in San Diego, and has been preparing for her Bat Mitzvah with her tutor Barbara Pardo and Rabbis Earne and Kornberg. Emma is the granddaughter of Allan and Elaine Jeffy, Shari Burks, and Nina and Nikolai Kozin of Yaroslavl, Russia.
YOUNG LEADERSHIP NEW BOARD MEMBERS We’re delighted to announce the addition of two new members to our Board of Directors. High School students Eli Anderson and Sophie Raskin began their board service in October of this year. They have already offered guidance on a number of issues, and we look forward to their fresh ideas and new perspectives. Sophie and Eli are part of a deliberate effort to expand the diversity and reach of our Board as the formal deliberative body of the congregation.

Sisterhood has been very active in promoting and volunteering for a variety of social justice programs. Below are some of the activities currently happening, and which need your help:
Phil Goldfarb, president of the Jewish Geneological Society of Tulsa, reports that the documentary L’dor V’dor: Generation to Generation | The Story of Tulsa’s Jewish Community was recently awarded First Place in Media Technology by the Oklahoma Museum Association.
Breakfast at Iron Gate. Dr. Sarah-Anne Schumann is continuing to seek volunteers to serve breakfast at the new Iron Gate facility downtown. Sarah-Anne needs six people over the age of 13 (men and women) to join together on Sunday, November 24, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. This important opportunity has been very popular and successful. The documentary was also scheduled to be shown in multiple media markets around the country during the High Holy Days. It has also been entered in local, national and international film festivals. If you do not have a copy of the DVD, they are still available at the Tulsa Historical Society. Thank you and congratulations for those who contributed to this outstanding work!
Knitting Chemo Caps. For several months, knitters in the congregation have worked to knit dozens of chemo caps which have been distributed to cancer patients with chemo-induced alopecia. Knit from soft, comforting yarn, the caps have brought warmth to many who are undergoing chemotherapy. Each cap, distributed to St. Francis Breast Center, CTCA, Oklahoma Cancer Specialists, and the offices of various Tulsa breast surgeons, has a tag from Sisterhood. Going Forward With Knitting. Sisterhood’s next knitting effort will be winter scarves. Partnering with Family & Children’s Services, Sisterhood is dedicating the upcoming Mah Jongg Tournament to providing coats and scarves for clients. Renee Kaplan and Michelle Brock are heading up this effort. Contact them for further information.
SISTERHOOD SOCIALS Movie Night at Circle Cinema. Joining together with Temple Israel Sisterhood, CBE Sisterhood will meet at Calaveras restaurant for a vegetarian dinner before attending the movie 93QUEEN, part of the Jewish Film Festival. The plot? A group of tenacious Chasidic Women in New York City create the first all female volunteer ambulance service, even if the men in their lives don’t support their efforts. The movie begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Circle Cinema. Contact Hillary Roubein. Book Club. Okay, let’s talk about great books! Men and women are invited to the new edition of the Sisterhood Book Club on Sunday, November 10, at 10:00 a.m. at the Synagogue. IN OUR SCHOOLS—MORAH SARA LEVITT BETWEEN THE GENERATIONS
three-part learning experience for upcoming B’nai Mitzvah students and their parents on Sunday morning. In the moment of transition from Jewish child to adult, who better than their important adults to learn alongside our students?
Through the magic of technology, our son Lior’s grandparents see him at least once a week. They sing to him, ask him questions about school and his life, and mostly admire his growth since the last time they saw him.
For our whole school community, I hope you will join your children this month for an opportunity to learn and work together at our Annual Family Day of Service on Sunday, November 24. Together, we will have a service experience, sing, eat, learn about our responsibilities as Jews to help those in need, and work on an action project to make change in our community.
As he gets older, I imagine these conversations becoming more complex, meaningful, and more two-sided. The relationship between grandparent and grandchild, between older community member and younger, or even parent and child, matters in Judaism. Not only do these experiences enhance our student’s Jewish studies but they enrich the lives of their adults as well. We see this happen in real time at the Synagogue already, during several of our regular Shabbat celebrations, when parents, grandparents, and other adults welcome Shabbat with our children.
This year we have invited Hunger Free Oklahoma to join us in this effort. Hunger Free Oklahoma works to end hunger in our state through advocacy, education, and policy. Our morning will build on prior years and give an opportunity for our families to encourage and promote change from a policy perspective. Check our weekly email blasts for more information in the coming week. I look forward to continuing to develop these programs in our community!
