SHABBAT TOGETHER: FRIDAY EVENINGS

As days and weeks go by, our tradition asks that we take time to enjoy our rest. Shabbat Together is a short digital gathering where we take a moment to pause with community as we enter Shabbat. Think of it as joining hands in a digital circle so that we can re-establish contact, bless the children of our community, and lift kiddush cups full of wine. Zoom is the platform we’ll be using, an important tool for all of us in this time of emergency. Use the link on our website to join the gathering. Please keep an eye on www.tulsagogue.com in the weeks ahead for details and guidance on all our digital gatherings. Shabbat Together will return on April 24.

You prepare the meal and we do the rest. Join us at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 9 for seder with Rabbis Marc Fitzerman and Daniel Kaiman and Morah Sara Levitt. All you have to do is set up a tablet or laptop at the end of the table and click the Zoom link on the Syangogue website (www.tulsagogue. (www.tulsagogue. com). com ). We’ll take you through the whole of the seder in just a little over an hour, including a symbolic meal as a placeholder so that we can finish together. When we close at 7:00, you can power down the laptop and enjoy a leisurely feast with those you love. There’s no charge for this experience, and we truly hope that this gathering serves the purpose of joyous celebration in the midst of struggle. From bondage to freedom!

PANIM EL PANIM: SHABBAT MORNINGS

Our tradition speaks of a special power that exists when a group of people gathers together for prayer. Panim el Panim is a live broadcast celebration led by Rabbis Kaiman and Fitzerman. It’s the Saturday morning parallel to what we’re now doing on Friday nights. Rooted in our in-person Shabbat morning service, the gathering includes singing, Torah study, and social connectedness. This celebration will take place on Zoom every Shabbat morning for the duration of the coronavirus emergency, including April 11, 18, and 25.

BIBI-DIBI ONLINE

Our monthly Shabbat experience for babies, toddlers, and their families moves online! With songs, games, and community building activities, we introduce the youngest members of our congregation to the wonders of Shabbat. Using commonly found household objects, we’ll navigate our way through a short set of rituals and prompts. This service will be held on Zoom (find the link on the Synagogue website) and streamed to Facebook Live. It all gets started at 5:30 p.m.

PASSOVER ZOOM-A-THON

We may need to connect to our families and each other digitally, but there’s plenty we can do to prepare for a joyous holiday. Please see the article on page 6 of this issue to see a whole afternoon of pre-Passover workshops and study opportunities with the professional family of the Synagogue.

We’ll follow the model for the first two days of the festival to close out our celebration of Passover this year. Please note that Yizkor will be recited on April 16 at the close of the morning service. Once again, the platform to use is Zoom, easily accessed from the front page of the Synagogue website (www.tulsagogue.com).

Join other young Jewish professionals online this evening at 7:00 p.m. for a pre-Passover night of handwork. We’ll welcome the crafting gurus from Made Indie Emporium to do what they do best. We’ll start the evening with a bit of learning and jump into our maker experience. RSVP to Sara Levitt at slevitt@bnaiemunah.com to hold your spot. We’ll then get you the link to join the Zoom session and set you up for a supplies delivery or pick up.

MY GRANDMOTHER’S MATZAH COVER

THE DIGITAL DELI

During the week of shivah for my father, Bill, my cousin Gerry unrolled a bundle that she had kept for many years in her home. In it was a matzah cover, embroidered in satin, with my grandmother Bertha’s signature sequins. Gerry was, by far, my grandmother’s favorite, the daughter she longed for, her heart’s desire. I am not surprised that my grandmother gave her the matzah cover, and I was deeply touched that she returned it to us.

It’s another episode of the B’nai Emunah Cooking School.

Rabbi Kaiman has been curing kosher meat for several years. In this episode, he’ll show you how he does it on Zoom, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Once you get yourself to the Synagogue website, click on the Zoom link and you’ll be right in his kitchen.

OUT IN THE WORLD

The cover itself carries many meanings. As my mother used to say, Bertha was a complicated person: demanding, critical, sometimes unhappy. But this is a joyful, exuberant, festive matzah cover, with color and light and many moving parts. She brought everything to it, including its halo of lace, now stained and stiff from many years of table spills. Out of great unhappiness my grandmother made pleasure for her family.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES Program Director Simon Lowen will focus on his personal passions in April to help offset the sense of confinement that many of us have felt so strongly. Take a look at what he has planned below.

It is also, in a sense, a statement about her learning. The inscription on the face is perfect and clear. She knew the tradition that each matzah on the table stands for a different division in the Israelite community, and she incorporated that midrash into her design. The little tabs on the inside of the cover say Kohayn, Levite, and Israelite. She signed her initials in Hebrew letters.

Bet, Bet: Bluma Borkofsky. She was the oldest daughter in a family of eight, and I would like to think that she had the same education as one of my other (great) grandmothers, Ida Pilchik Davidoff, a matriarch in her own right.

Teva Tuesdays Caught a case of cabin fever? “Teva” means nature, and each Tuesday in April, Simon will post thought-provoking activities connected with the natural world on the Synagogue Facebook page and website. You’ll also be able to find him on the Preschool and Synagogue School Facebook pages. The emphasis of these posts will be on opportunities to escape the confines of our homes and safely play, meditate, and learn from and with the landscape around us.

Look for more posts on all of our digital platforms, featuring many of the beautiful hikes available in the Tulsa area, along with conversation about radical amazement, conservation, and stewardship. If you’re feeling weary of the current restrictions, we hope that Simon’s videos will be the right antidote.

Finally, and most significantly, is the date on the cover: 5678.

This is the 102nd anniversary of my grandmother’s matzah cover, made for seder in 1918. Passover that year began on the evening of March 27. I would want us to remember that this was the height of the First World War. Just a few days before, Germany launched its last offensive. That very same month, influenza broke out at Fort Riley, Kansas. Millions were dead.

Thirty million more would die, victims of a pandemic that brought catastrophic grief. Soldiers survived the war only to die at home.

Bake Challah.

Celebrate Life.

In the middle of all of this, my grandmother made a matzah cover. It’s as beautiful and lively as any I’ve seen. You don’t make a matzah cover like this one, sewing each sequin, embroidering each letter, unless you believe that there is a future for yourself and your family. She believed that her family would endure and flourish. She believed that they would sit at seder again. She believed that they would sit at seder each year, singing over wine and matzah, until the end of time.

I am grateful for her courage, for her ferocious confidence, for making something important out of a scrap of satin. Whatever happens to our grandmother’s matzah cover, I believe that her spirit will endure in the lives of all of our children and every member and friend of our congregation. We’re going to make it no matter what, and I wish you the courage to face whatever comes next. Amayn, amayn, so may it be God’s will.

SISTERHOOD

WE’VE BEEN THIS WAY BEFORE

HAVDALAH Sisterhood celebrated Havdalah on Saturday evening, February 29. It was a wonderful gathering of friends and an opportunity to welcome the new week. Special thanks go to those who organized Havdalah: Alin Avitan, Jennifer Joels, Roxanne Imerson, Lori Lieb, Alicia Lyons and Nancy Renberg.

These past several weeks have brought about new challenges and ideas that feel like we’re breaking new ground every single moment. From tragedy to innovation, from social distancing to interconnectedness, it feels like things can turn on a dime and it’s hard to get a sense of perspective and direction.

IRON GATE

And that’s where the story of Rabbi Samuel Katzenellenbogen comes in handy. Rabbi Katzenellenbogen was a descendant of one of the great Eastern European rabbinic families, and found his way to employment at Congregation B’nai Emunah in our very early years. Not much is written about him and his time here. But it would be safe to assume he arrived in Tulsa after a long career in Europe and found a place as a teacher and shochet (ritual butcher). Rabbi Katzenellenbogen was married to Dorby and together they had one daughter.

SPECIAL EVENTS

After 50 years of marriage, in March of 1926 Rabbi Katzenellenbogen died of pneumonia after a brief illness. Just twenty hours later, Dorby succumbed to the same disease. Their son-inlaw, J. Sigel, who was in town visiting from Little Rock, also fell ill and found himself suffering from pneumonia.

I know about all of this, because it was newsworthy enough to make its way into the Tulsa Daily World. So, we have to imagine, sicknesses like this one were not a regular occurrence. However, it’s hard to ignore some of the parallels to our own moment.

Bedikat Chamaytz Scavenger Hunt @ 1:00 p.m.

In mid-November 2019, a butcher in a market in Wuhan, China slaughtered a bat and got sick and died of pneumonia. Within days many more were infected, likely relatives and friends, and they died, too. And we all know too well how aggressively this virus has changed our world.

Join us for a high-energy take on an age-old Jewish tradition: scouring our homes for chamaytz (leavened bread) before Passover! Simon Lowen will lead this Zoom session to start us off.

While the newspaper article in 1926 doesn’t mention coronavirus, a fast-moving illness that brings about pneumonia certainly feels familiar. In the case of Rabbi Katzenellenbogen no pandemic seems to have been sparked. And therein lies something reassuring to me. Illness and disease have always been part of the human experience. While we may not have the answers to COVID-19 ready in this moment, I take great comfort in knowing that we’ve found ways to move forward even amongst tragedy.

Inclusion in the Seder @ 2:00 p.m.

Curious about what to include on your seder plate? Come learn and discuss with Simon Lowen. We’ll be looking at some modern additions to the seder plate (oranges, Miriam’s Cup, etc.) and how we can intentionally curate a seder experience that is excitingly inclusive.

Charoset Heaven @ 3:00 p.m.

The newspaper article about the Katzenellebogen’s ends with an announcement/exhortation that the community should show up and mourn its loss collectively. I think there is wisdom here as well. We have to be present for one another, no matter what will unfold next. While of course, we will take our proper measures to ensure personal health and safety, there is strength in feeling our communal connection, and we must keep that alive no matter the circumstance.

Women in Exodus @ 4:00 p.m.

Women saved the day through the entirety of the Exodus narrative. Mirrors, lies, and subversions abound in the story. We’ll be studying many of the wonderful women of Exodus with Morah Sara Levitt. Come learn with us!

SCREEN TIME Ok, I’ll admit it: I have never been more glued to my devices. My phone remains in my hand and my laptop is always at the ready, as article after article, Facebook post after Facebook post lights up my screen. Our son, who barely noticed the TV before, is on our phone regularly, watching videos of his friends and teachers, Facetiming daily with our families, and watching online concerts from the latest musicians playing on Facebook Live.

PLUGGING IN Missing your ShulSchool, Hebrew Language Lab and Midrasha friends? So are we. Each Sunday and Wednesday our Hebrew Language Lab, Midrasha and ShulSchool students will meet online for learning, community time, sharing and, of course, singing and prayer. Many things have changed in the last few weeks, and more is still to come. Our relationship with technology has become essential in order to survive the loneliness and boredom that comes with protecting ourselves. Despite my discomfort with a dependence on our screens, what has emerged in the last few weeks of physically distancing ourselves from one another has challenged me in ways I did not expect. In our school community, much that happens at the Synagogue happens in real, face-to-face time. It’s a relationship with a teen Madrich, a moment of exploration in the garden, or the first time a student leads a prayer during Tefillah.

What has emerged from this time of physical isolation and an increased reliance on technology, is something worth taking notice of. The emergency shook up our system, forcing us to think outside the box and opening our eyes to new possibilities for learning and community. We are filling parents’ toolboxes in a way that we never have before, turning to them to create meaningful Jewish experiences at home, with our support and guidance along the way. Our students are tapping into endless resources as their teachers prompt them to explore historical sites in Israel or interview their grandparents about their Jewish life-cycle experiences.

All of the sessions described above will take place on the Synagogue’s Zoom platform. No special equipment required. We are literally meeting families where they are, in their living rooms and at their kitchen tables, in their pajamas, and in the comfort and safety of their homes. While I wish more than anything to be back inside the walls of the Synagogue on Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons with our students, I am comforted in knowing that we are continuing to build out our students’ relationship with Judaism, even if it is taking place on their screens. We will be together again in the future, with a new appreciation for our physical closeness and a renewed drive to provide excellence in Jewish educational experiences for our kids.
