A Message from the President

Billy Duncan Investing in the Future Last month, I wrote about the people who make the Tulsa County Bar Association special. Through our new Bar Stars feature, we're recognizing members who invest their time, talents, and energy into strengthening our profession and serving our community. That investment comes in many forms, and this month I've been thinking about another one: preparing for the future.

DWWRUQH\V WKLQN LQWHQWLRQDOO\ DERXW ZKDW D IXO¿OOLQJ OLIH after practice can look like. Whether you're just beginning your career, in the busiest years of practice, or considering retirement, our Association is here to support you every step of the way.

None of us likes to think about the unexpected, but succession planning is ultimately about serving our clients well. Whether an attorney plans to retire years from now, faces an unexpected illness, or simply wants the peace of mind that comes with being prepared, having a succession plan is one of the greatest professional responsibilities we FDQ IXO¿OO ,W SURWHFWV RXU FOLHQWV VXSSRUWV RXU IDPLOLHV and staff, and provides reassurance that the work we've dedicated our lives to will continue to be handled with care.

Please continue watching your TCBA emails for upcoming programs, volunteer opportunities, and events. My hope this \HDU LV WKDW HYHU\ PHPEHU ¿QGV DW OHDVW RQH QHZ ZD\ WR become involved. Whether it's attending a CLE, joining a committee, participating in a social event, or volunteering in our community, every step you take strengthens our Association.

Of course, professional success also depends on taking care of ourselves along the journey. That's why I'm especially excited about our upcoming wellness CLEs this fall. Our profession is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be demanding. Investing in our mental, physical, and emotional well-being allows us to better serve our clients, our families, and one another.

As CLE season gets underway, I also encourage you to stay engaged with everything happening at the TCBA. From As attorneys, we spend our careers helping clients prepare our Thunder game on October 6 to the Holiday Challenge, for life's uncertainties. We encourage them to have estate Santa Brings a Leisure and Lawsuit, and many other SODQV RUJDQL]H LPSRUWDQW GRFXPHQWV DQG PDNH GLI¿FXOW events throughout the coming months, there are countless decisions before they're absolutely necessary. Those relationships often become one of the most valuable parts of bar membership. own practices.

This month, the TCBA is placing an emphasis on attorney succession planning by providing information and resources to help members designate another attorney to assist with their practice if the need ever arises. I encourage you to take advantage of these materials and have conversations that many of us tend to postpone. We hope you never need the plan you've created, but you'll be grateful to have it if the time ever comes. Preparing for the future is also what the TCBA strives to do every day. One of the things I appreciate most about our Association is that it offers opportunities for attorneys in every season of their careers. This month, our Leadership Academy begins another year of developing future leaders within our profession. At the same time, we're excited to KRVW 5HGH¿QLQJ 5HWLUHPHQW D SURJUDP GHVLJQHG WR KHOS

This month's challenge: Take one step toward preparing for the future. If you haven't created a succession plan for your practice, begin one. If you've already done that, attend a TCBA event this month and introduce yourself to someone you don't know. You never know when a new professional relationship may become a trusted colleague, mentor, or lifelong friend. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your President. I'm looking forward to another great month together.

Sincerely, Billy Duncan TCBA President, 2026–2027

Broadly speaking, there are three ways for a lawyer to handle the lawyer’s license when retiring. The lawyer can resign.
