Exercise Excuses to Put Away: • Too expensive. Wear a pair of comfortable, non-skid shoes for walking and use soup cans or water bottles to strength train. • Too tired. Regular, moderate physical activity can help reduce fatigue and even help you manage stress.

A Message from the President Kara Vincent HOW’S YOUR HEALTH? Well, I bought a new seat, and it worked. Riding my exercise bike has become easier and something that I don’t hate (I refuse to go so far as to say I like it). The struggle is real. As I approach the second half of my life, I am reminded on a daily basis that along with an ever-growing list of responsibilities, taking care of myself is now something that I have to focus on for the remainder of my years. I told my friend not too long ago that I feel like I’m five again. I take a multi-vitamin that is chewable, along with vitamin D and turmeric…also chewable. Seriously, throw in a Flintstone’s vitamin and I will be reliving the days of my youth. “You only have to take it once a day” sounds fabulous until you find yourself standing every morning in front of a line of bottles doling out each of the vitamins and supplements I strongly expressed my dissatisfaction with that that will help keep you on track. And, I know that I’m answer, and it was at the moment that a male shopper, not alone in this daily ritual. who up to this point had just been milling around the Never before has general health been so much bike section of the store, made eye contact with me. We both started laughing. I’m not sure why he was on the forefront of everyone’s minds. Many families laughing. Probably because of my response. I was have struggled and are still struggling with the effects of laughing because this was the most out in the open the pandemic. The lasting impacts of the virus are still conversation I’d had with strangers about pain in the unknown, and whether you contracted the virus or not, lower half of my body since I’d had my youngest son due to significant changes in how we all live our lives nearly 21 years ago. each day, you have been affected. Change is stressful and we can all agree that this last year has been wrought with change - change in how we work, socialize, view the world around us, and even change in how we view each other.

I found myself recently standing in the middle of a sports store having a more in-depth conversation with the sales associate than I wanted to about bicycle seats. My new “this will change your life” exercise bike purchase had turned into “this seat hurts more than I care to say” and I was searching for something more able to ease the pain while I tried to “change my life.” The sales person began asking a series of questions about my use, “How long have you been riding this exercise bike?” “Just started” was the answer. Ok. “How long have you been riding a bike in general?” Again, “Just started” was my reply. This was starting to feel like a personal attack. “Oh, ok,” he said. “Then you can expect some pain and even bruising for the first month.”

When I started in public accounting, the partner in the CPA firm told me that if you put the tax returns for two consecutive years for the same person next to each other and compare them, there will be little change. Barring a life event, like a birth, death, or buying or selling a house, we are all creatures of habit. That means this last 1.5 years has been especially hard. We are all changing and adapting and that takes a toll physically. It also affects us mentally. As attorneys, we train to push through. Just like I know that I’m not the only one taking vitamins and supplements – I’m not the only attorney who is daily riding an exercise bike. Keep researching, keep writing, keep advocating, keep moving forward because clients need you. That, in itself can create stress. When the effects of a society dealing with COVID are added into the mix, the stress can feel overwhelming. What might otherwise be a sign of aging, can wind up being the result of stress: aches, chest pain, exhaustion, trouble sleeping, headaches, muscle tension - the list continues, but you get the idea. In summary, the last year has been enough to send some in our society to the brink. We know this because we all deal with those individuals. People who struggled before the pandemic are on the edge, and we are the ones who talk them off of the ledge they find themselves there. If we don’t take care to minimize our stress, we may start eyeing the ledge as a viable option for ourselves. The TCBA understands the struggle, so we have implemented benefits to help. We have a full list of member benefits in the areas of retail, hospitality, entertainment, and health. Did you know that we offer free live-streaming yoga sessions 2 times per week, and your membership provides you a 20% discount with a personal trainer? Maybe with a personal trainer involved, you’ll never find yourself in a sports store having an all too personal, out in the open, conversation about pain. Additionally, the Oklahoma Bar Association provides Lawyers Helping Lawyers which gives members up to six hours of free short-term, problem-focused or crisis counseling. Sometimes it helps just to talk to about what you’re dealing with. The bottom line is that the TCBA is made up of your peers, and we care about you, your families, and your well-being. Our goal is to implement programs that are helpful to you and your families to ease your

burden. If you have an idea for a membership benefit that you think should be added to our list, let us know. We’re open to suggestions and we want to hear from you. Lastly, you can start to improve your physical and mental health, by renewing your membership to the TCBA. Psychologist Susan Pinker states that direct person-to-person contact triggers parts of our nervous system that release a “cocktail” of neurotransmitters tasked with regulating our response to stress and anxiety. Whether it’s in-person gatherings or virtual meetings, we all need interaction with our peers, and the TCBA provides wonderful opportunities for networking and venting. You can also join a committee and perform acts of kindness by volunteering for activities that aren’t tied to a billable hour. In the end, we want to help you be better by assisting, educating, and empowering our members. So lean in to bar activities this year and get the most out of your membership, and please renew your membership if you haven't already. Just stick a reminder next to all your bottles of gummy vitamins so you don’t forget. Sincerely, Kara Vincent TCBA President, 2021-2022

The impressive list of accomplishments and initiatives is too long to include in this article, but some of the recent highlights include: • Development of a new comprehensive CAP Handbook for Eviction Defense. • Updated the Oklahoma Residential Landlord & Tenant Act booklet that can be included when tenants are served and will be distributed throughout Tulsa County. • Revised the Tenant's Brochure (English and Spanish) for distribution throughout Tulsa. County to emphasize the need to appear in court and outlining general court practices. • Established a new TCBA Lawyer Referral telephone consultation program for tenants.

Will Rogers probably wasn’t talking about the job of TCBA Vice President, but his quote sure resonates with me. Among my few responsibilities, I have the opportunity each month to highlight the good things the Association is doing. In light of the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Tulsans facing the inability to pay rent and the potential loss of basic housing security, it seems fitting to recognize one of the most impactful programs supported by the TCBA - the Court Assistance Program There are also numerous heroes among the pro (“CAP”). CAP provides pro bono legal representation bono attorneys serving under the CAP program. Oren R. Griffin Named Dean of University of Tulsa College of Law
"Oren has served as a valued teacher, administrator, mentor, and practicing attorney. His experience in academia and the private sector is an outstanding combination that will benefit the college and our students," TU President Brad R. Carson said. "Oren has a reputation as someone who actively builds consensus and can get things done. In his current role, he is highly regarded by faculty, students and fellow administrators, and we anticipate great things under his leadership at TU's College of Law."

Griffin's scholarship and teaching focuses on civil procedure, education law, employment law, and alternative dispute resolution. He is a frequent speaker at regional and national conferences for organizations such as the Stetson University College of Law National Conference on Law and Higher Education, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the International Association of Campus Law The University of Tulsa announced that Oren R. Griffin has been named dean of TU's College of Law. He will assume his new duties Jan. 1, 2022.

Griffin currently serves as associate dean for strategic initiatives at Mercer University School of Law in Macon, Georgia. He has held that position for six years and previously served as associate dean for academic affairs for five years.

"It is a privilege and honor to be invited to serve as the next dean at The University of Tulsa College of Law," Griffin said. "I look forward to joining the TU Law community and working with the outstanding faculty and staff to continue the recruitment and education of bright and engaging students seeking to pursue a career in the legal profession."

Griffin received his J.D. from Washington & Lee University and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He earned his bachelor's degree from Southern University at New Orleans and his master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

28 DAY VIRTUAL FITNESS CHALLENGE

Benefitting the Tulsa Veterans Treatment Court They say it takes anywhere from 21 to 28 days to form a new habit. When you consider all the challenges that came with 2020 and now 2021, daily exercise and an effort to stay healthy has been a significant struggle for many. This 28-Day Virtual Fitness Challenge is a commitment to making physical health a priority. There are no rules or stipulations around how you should or can do that. The purpose of this challenge is to help give participants the opportunity to set healthy goals, maintain momentum and motivation and to provide accountability for those who dare to participate. This challenge is also an opportunity to recognize and honor the continued success and commitment the Tulsa Veterans Treatment Court has provided to so many of our veterans over the last 13 years.

WHAT IS THE TULSA VETERANS TREATMENT COURT? The program originated in 2008 when county officials realized that a significant number of individuals entering the criminal justice system were veterans. In October 2008 alone, 158 veterans were arrested here in Tulsa County. During the first 6 months of 2009, 645 had been arrested. Of those, 327 charges were felonies. Many of these offenses were the result of substance abuse and mental health issues related to combat. At the time, Oklahoma ranked third in the nation with

16 Tulsa Lawyer

the number of National Guard and Reservists deployed in the Global War on Terror, with 3,400 service members sent overseas. For a majority of these troops, this was their second or third time in a combat zone. The strain of combat gives rise to mental health issues, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and this can lead to depression, substance abuse, joblessness and homelessness. War related illnesses contribute to escalated suicide attempts as well as arrest, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, homelessness, and despair. Sadly, many veterans turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with their combat related experiences/trauma, ending up with them in the criminal justice system. Rather than be reactionary to the rising number of veterans incarcerated, the Tulsa County Drug Court took a proactive approach and implemented the Tulsa Veterans Treatment Court on December 8, 2008. A collaborative effort among the Tulsa County District Court, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office, the Tulsa County Public Defender’s Office, and many other community partners, the program seeks to divert eligible veteran-defendants with substance dependency and/or mental illness that are charged with typically felony or misdemeanor non-violent criminal offenses to a specialized criminal court docket where the veterans voluntarily participate in a judicially supervised treatment plan that a team of court staff, veteran health

care professionals, veterans benefit professionals, Oklahoma Employment Security Commission veterans representatives, veterans organizations service officers, AOD health care professionals, and mental health professionals develop along with the veteran. The program works to connect the veteran to resources to help them address the issues that led to their offenses and to successfully adjust to civilian life. The Tulsa Veterans Treatment Court was first of its kind in Oklahoma and only the third in the United States. Over the last 13 years it has become the model for over 100 other veteran treatment court programs around the country, and has received national recognition for its program success. To date, the Tulsa Veterans Treatment Court has successfully graduated over 300 veteran participants and seen a more than 90% retention completion rate. One of the key components of the Tulsa Veterans Treatment Court is the volunteer mentor program. Veteran Mentors act as coach, guide, role model, advocate, and support for the veteran participants. Mentors encourage, guide, and support each participant through the court process. This includes listening to the concerns of each veteran participant and making general suggestions, assisting with determining needs, and acting as a support. Veteran mentors are veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who volunteer their time to assist the Court, providing advice, personal experiences, recommendations and guidance to veterans. Many of our veteran mentors come from a number of veteran service organizations, the Tulsa community and government organizations. Veteran mentors include but are not limited to those who have served in peacetime, Vietnam, Desert Storm/Shield, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The veteran mentor relationship promotes through encouragement, fostering a “can do” attitude in the veteran. The veteran becomes motivated to accomplish his or her treatment goals, feels that he or she is not alone, and knows that the mentor and the Court are there for them. The 28 day Virtual Fitness Challenge is our way to recognize and honor the accomplishments, dedication and continued success of not just the Tulsa Veterans Treatment Court program, but the program staff, the treatment team, the community partners, the various service organizations, the mentors, and most importantly, the veterans.

TELL ME ABOUT THE CHALLENGE!

The 28-day Virtual Fitness Challenge will officially kickoff on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2021. Registration for the event will begin in mid-October, and participants may continue to register until December 10, 2021. After December 10, registration for the event will be closed. The Fitness Challenge itself will consist of 5 different physical challenges (push-ups, sit-ups, burpees, planks, and a walk/run/combo) each with a varying level of difficulty depending on your current fitness level, and each increasing in intensity over the course of 28 days. Participants can elect to do any or all of the challenges, there are no restrictions as to what or how much you have to do. The goal is simple- make it through your 28 days. HOW DO I SIGN UP?

Registration is $30 per person, and you can sign-up online at www.tulsabar.com or by emailing Julie Rivers at JulieR@tulsabar.com. Proceeds will benefit the Tulsa Veterans Treatment Court and all registrations received prior to November 11th will receive a #TCBAVETS 28 Day Fitness Challenge t-shirt and an invitation to join us in the Veteran’s Day Parade! WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I SIGN UP?

Following registration, you will receive 28-day calendars for all 5 of the events, each listing the daily exercise goal you should try to accomplish. Again, you can do as many of the challenges as you want. Because this is a virtual challenge you are encouraged to post pictures and/or videos of your daily challenge experience directly to the TCBA’s social media using the tag #TCBAVETS. This will be a great way to share your daily success, encourage and support others, and help spread the Fitness Challenge online. So be sure to tag your friends! You will also receive email updates and invitations to some of our virtual and/or in-person events, to include the Fitness Challenge kick-off and joining us in the 2021 VFW Veterans Day Parade on Thursday, November 11th.
