Interview Excerpts:

Paper Mart: First, tell us about the business in the last FY and so far in the current FY! Harsh Pati Singhania: The last year was good business wise as we were able to improve our sales as well as profit. In the current FY, the overall performance is quite satisfactory and quarterly results so far reflect better business than in the last FY.

PM: Industry is quite upbeat about the packaging segment's growth and is investing big time in creating new capacities. Are such investments worthwhile given the demand in the market? What do you have to say about it?

HPS: There is growth in all segments of the paper industry in India, whether it is printing-writing paper, or tissue, or packaging paper. Even the newsprint, which has been steadily declining globally and in India till recently, is now growing appreciably. The reason for such positive growth in the Indian paper industry are several -- rising circulation, improved literacy rate, increased paper consumption in business and commerce, changing lifestyle standards among other factors.

Now speaking on packaging segment, I would see no one could dispute its present high growth figures and its potential growth trends in times to come. The packaging has been growing at double digit while the overall growth of the paper industry in India is at an average of 7-7.5 percent. Packaging undoubtedly has immense possibilities. So, yes, the quantum of investments currently happening is worthwhile and of course much required.

The segment is witnessing good growth because of growth in sectors such as FMCG, pharmaceuticals, organized Retail, e-commerce, etc. The preference for packaged goods has led to an

overall demand growth for packaging paper and board.

JK Paper already has capacity in packaging for making products such as virgin fiber boards, folding boxboards (FBB), SBS and other products. We make high-end packaging products and are continuously involved in developing new products for the segment.

Keeping in view the possibilities in the segment, JK Paper is setting up a new 150,000 tonnes packaging capacity at our Gujarat facility. The work is well underway on the project, and the production is likely to commence in the next two and a half years.

PM: What is the status of the Sirpur Paper Mill?

HPS: Sirpur Paper Mills has been closed for the last four years. We acquired the mill through the government's new Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) and were adjudged as the successful resolution applicant. Since it was a closed mill, we have been working on renovating and repairing various sections and setting them right. Over the next few months, we would be in a position to finally start the production at the mill and subsequently increase the capacity gradually. I am sure we would be able to ramp up our production in the FY20, and achieve the full capacity of 140,000 tonnes over a period of time.

PM: How closely do you think the growth of the industry is linked to national economic growth and good policy environment by the Govt.?

HPS: First of all, we must be very clear that the growth of the Indian economy is something which is unstoppable.

Now, if we do a good job in policy execution, our growth will be higher than what it is now, no matter how often the policies are amended or introduced. India's economic growth is

so inevitable that even if our policy framework and its execution are not up to the mark, an average annual growth of 7-8 percent is assured or inescapable given there is no crisis of global nature lurking on our head, e.g. the global meltdown in 2008.

For the Indian paper industry, I would reiterate that all its segments will continue to grow for the next few years due to reasons mentioned earlier.

However, the main challenge for the industry now is to prepare a policy environment if we wish the current growth to last long commensurate with the national growth rate. A feasible policy environment would help us in achieving our business targets along with creating immense employment in the country. For example, pragmatic policies are needed to be drawn and implemented with respect to forestry and plantation, allowing creation of plenty of jobs in rural and tribal areas apart from ensuring the availability of raw material in the country. Such policies would also immensely cut down the import of wood and processed pulp saving good amount of forex spent.

Other areas to be taken seriously by the Govt. are working on infrastructure development, which will bring down the transportation cost; simplifying the procedures to obtain land on time; and addressing the environmental issues through practical policies. All these areas need immediate attention.

Further, the cost of money is very high in this country, and the paper industry is quite capital intensive. If the Govt. works on the issue and is able to bring down the interest rates, easy capital would facilitate new investments in the industry, thereby assuring its growth in long-term. The growth of the Indian paper industry is not a question anymore, the issue is how much of this growth is going to happen on account of an enabling policy environment and our own hard work.

Century Pulp & Paper Invests INR 100 Cr in a New Tissue Paper Machine Convinced of tissue segment's strong growth potential, the leading tissue paper manufacturer in India has invested in yet another state-of-the-art tissue paper machine with a capacity of 36000 TPA. The company, being a leading W&P and packaging paper producer, says it will keep expanding in tissue segment on account of its current growth figures and mammoth future scope.

xcerpts of Paper Mart's Interview with Mr. JP Narain, CEO, Century Pulp & Paper.

Paper Mart: First of all, tell us something about the new tissue machine you have installed in your facility? What products is Century making in tissue segment?

JP Narain: With the new tissue machine, we are adding 36000 tonnes of tissue manufacturing capacity. This new machine is just an extension of our existing tissue business as we have already installed three cutting centers at various locations in the country.

We are manufacturing all kinds of products- facial napkins, toilet papers, kitchen towels and high strength tissue.

PM: What is the total outlay of this new tissue project? Whom have you procured the machine from?

JP: The project cost is around INR 100 Cr. The machine has been supplied by the Valmet. This new machine is only a replica of the machine which we have with certain necessary modifications.

The existing tissue machine from Valmet is a state-of-the-art machine with crescent former that produces world-class tissue paper.

PM: What is the raw material scenario for the new machine?

I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W On the packaging side, our order book is filled and the plant is consistently running at 95-100 percent of the total capacity. As far as expansion is concerned, we are currently not planning anything for the packaging.

PM: Packaging is without doubt on high growth path, both in capacity addition and production terms. How long do you think the segment would witness the high growth phase?

JP: The procurement of raw material will not be an issue as it's only 36000 tonnes a year and our in-house pulp production is over 28000 tonnes a month. So, 100 TPM or more of pulp for the new machine can be managed without much hassles.

PM: Why did you choose tissue for the expansion, especially when the industry is focusing more on packaging grades?

JP: In business, decisions are made based on statistics. As per statistics, writing-printing has been growing at the rate of 0.5 percent globally and at the rate of 5-6 percent in India; packaging board is growing at 4 percent globally and at 8-10 percent in India; and tissue is growing at 4-5 percent globally and at 15-17 percent in India. Considering these growth figures, tissue seems to be leading the other two by huge margins. Along with the noticeable growth numbers, if we consider the base consumption, rising trends, personal health and hygiene awareness, tissue segment appears to be the safest bet for future expansions.

It's not that Century is stopping here; we have got some very aggressive future plans for the expansion of our tissue manufacturing and conversion capacity.

PM: What are the growth drivers for tissue and related products in India?

JP: As I said, tissue segment is growing very fast in India, and this fast growth

can be largely attributed to relatively low or negligible consumption base presently in the country. You grow fast when you grow from nothing, and figure seems quite big. The tissue segment in India is growing at the rate of 15-17 percent, virgin tissue growing at the largest rate, i.e. 17 percent.

Moreover, we expect this growth to continue for the next 5-7 years in this fashion because of growing awareness of personal health and hygiene, expanding urbanization, expansion of health and hospitality industry, etc.

The concept of tissue usage is closely connected with health and wellness, which is alone strong enough driver for vigorous tissue consumption in days to come. With education, global connectedness, and improvement in economic well-being, the concept of health and physical wellness is sure to improve drastically in the country.

PM: Is something happening on writing-printing and packaging fronts at Century?

JP: In W&P, we are planning to upgrade our PM3 and PM4 with an investment of around INR 75 cr in order to enhance the production and efficiency. The machine upgradation would be undertaken by some top-line OEMs and technology suppliers, probably Voith. We are also planning some major upgrades in the utilities segment of the mill in order to better calibrate our plant's capacity and utilize the assets in an optimal way.

JP: Packaging industry's growth is proportionate to the growth of industries like food and food processing, FMCG, FMCD, organized retail, and e-commerce. If these industries are growing, which they are, the proportionate growth will surely come to the packaging industry -- be it brown paper or white board. The packaging growth also depends on the growth of the country's GDP, which is on steady path for the previous few years, of course with some transient turbulence here and there. The GDP growth brings growth to all areas and boosts both consumption and production.

Any country growing at the rate of 7.57.8 percent will spur good amount of consumption. The five sectors, viz. pharmacy, FMCG, FMCD, food and ecommerce are more likely to receive the boon of this consumption growth, thereby producing enough to satisfy people's need. In such enhanced production phase, these industries would require more in terms of quantity and quality of packaging, which is a good scenario for the whole packaging industry including manufactures, corrugators, and other packaging solution providers.

PM: Give us your thoughts on the growth potentials of W&P segment in our country!

JP: There doesn't seem to be any challenges in W&P segment in India.

Till the time our literacy count is not reaching up to the certain threshold position, I think W&P has got a good potential in India. I don't see any

I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W challenges in this segment as education sector will continue creating enough opportunities for the next ten years at least.

With a number of initiatives on behalf of the govt., the education sectors in India is poised for the continued growth which will have important bearings on the overall consumption of W&P paper.

Beside the private educational publications, the govt. itself is a mega consumer for W&P paper for its myriads of publications, right from elementary level to higher education. India for time being is going to depend on physical books and notebooks for education, a good thing for W&P segment.

PM: How do you look at overseas company with deeper purses making efforts to establish themselves in India? How would the Indian companies respond to an increased level of competition in the domestic market if such foreign investments fructify?

JP: It would be a difficult question to answer until you see any such companies succeeding in India with their business vision for the country. Moreover, a business in any market depends on the business ethics and the commitments you have for that market. Even if the overseas companies have huge capital at their disposal, it doesn't mean they will squander it anywhere without proper ground assessment of the market. If a person is spending INR 100, he wants a certain ROI from that investment -whether he is a rich man or a poor man.

And, the ROI largely depends on where and how you are going to spend your money. India is a different market and the market dynamics here is actually stranger to companies operating in other part of globalised economy. It's a difficult market for many who have operated in developed western markets, both in terms of consumption patterns and consolidation.

However, if foreign companies succeed in India on account of their serious study of the market here, I would not say that competition would be sever for the companies operating here. We have

better understanding of the market dynamics, supply-chain, and customer culture here, which will prove to be an edge over our foreign competitors.

Besides, we would also learn from their global best practices. For example, we already know that the fragmentation of the paper industry must be overcome, sooner or later, in order to compete in the global market. This lesson will be quite useful when India will become a part of the global market with foreign companies coming in. More foreign companies establishing themselves on the Indian soil would mean more stepping up of efforts by domestic companies to match their level in terms of value-chain and market management, which I think Indian companies are better equipped to achieve given their domestic advantage and resilience. We are not taking it as a competition rather as a good learning opportunity for the industry.

PM: India is a price sensitive market. How would you balance the pricing and quality for the growing yet nascent product category of tissue?

JP: India is a price sensitive nation but we are also a quality conscious country.

For example, I am quite sure that number of Apple smartphones sold in India is not inferior to many developed countries. Quality often is associated with the better economic capacity, i.e. purchasing power and higher per capita income. The rising Indian middle class of late has grown tremendously in terms of per capita income and high per capita expenditure, which all augurs well for producers making quality products. Simultaneously, there are large masses which require products more in volumes than in quality. So, the Indian market is full of opportunities for both quality and quantity producers, and for manufacturers who balance between quality and quantity. Tissue is one segment which will require both quantity and quality in the current growing phase, which is to continue for many years to come. Being one of the pioneers in the tissue segment, Century is going to lead by balancing the pricing and

quality in order to nudge the market towards the best tissue usage practices.

PM: As you said ‘nudging the market towards best tissue usage practices’, is Century doing anything to spread hygiene awareness besides producing quality tissues?

JP: We have got a special drive on this.

There is an agency which is promoting awareness on hygiene and cleanliness.

The agency is not concentrating on promoting our product and is focused solely on educating people on overall wellness and hygiene along with clean environment. We are aiming to take this drive far and wide, which would eventually convince people about the significance of healthy lifestyle and the role of tissue and related products in that.

PM: Where do you see the Indian paper industry in next 3-5 years?

JP: I expect that the next 3-5 years will be extremely good for the paper industry. There are two reasons. The first one is China banning the import of waste paper and their conviction that this decision is good for the country.

This will create a supply-chain balance in the region. The second is the decision to ban plastics by increasing number of Indian states. Both these things are to stabilize the Indian paper industry in terms of giving greater demands for the paper products.

Upcoming verticals and new emerging product segments will also provide a fillip to the paper industry, for example, the nascent tableware segment. There is a manufacturer who has invested INR 200 Cr in the segment to produce tableware with virgin pulp and bagasse.

This venture is tremendous success because of high demand of the products in the market. There would be few more such paper based verticals which will give the industry much required boost on account of being healthy and sustainable products. I don't see any big challenge for the paper industry except the availability of raw material!

Paper Mart: To begin with, our readers would like to know about the journey of Dev Priya Group?

Tell us about the group's structure and where Dev Priya Industries fits in it?

A m i t G u p t a : D e v P r iya G ro u p commenced its operations in the year 1988. My father Sh. Mahendra Kr. Gupta, played a vital role in the establishment of the Group. In August 1989, Dev Priya Group started its production with a small paper mill capable of delivering 20 TPD. Another mill with a capacity of 40 TPD was setup in 1992. The Group added more mills between 1995 and 1997 to meet the growing demands. At present, there are total 7 paper mills operating under Dev Priya Group, collectively producing more than 1200 TPD. The operation and management of Dev Priya Industries Pvt. Ltd. and Dev Priya Papers Private Limited are overseen by our family. In 1997, I took the charge of Dev Priya Industries, which was then agro-based producing 1000 tonnes a month. As a group, the production capacity of both the companies has

PM: Tell us about the capacities you have for kraft paper and duplex board.

AG: For the most part, Dev Priya Industries and Dev Priya Papers are into packaging grade, producing 450 TPD of kraft and 200 TPD of duplex b o a r d r e s p e c t i v e l y. D e v P r i y a Industries specializes in the production of Kraft liner products such as Fluting, Testliner and Recycled KLB.

PM: Since when have you been operating on duplex machine?

AG: Established in 1998, our parent company, Dev Priya Papers started its operation with waste paper recycling & converted in agro-based kraft paper.

We initially installed a yankee machine with a capacity of 20 TPD. However, the amendment in the pollution control policies in late 90s made the operation of agro-based mills difficult, forcing us to consider the modification of this machine again to recycledbased for producing duplex board in the year 2000.

Moreover, Dev Priya Industries was also producing agro-based kraft paper till 2003. We subsequently converted this mill to recycled-based by installing a Kadant Lamort Stock Preparation and started producing W&P paper and newsprint. Later on, after one and half year, we again modified the machine and began manufacturing high BF kraft paper, which is currently being produced at the mill.

PM: You produce high BF Kraft paper. Have you considered working towards manufacturing RCT-based packaging grades?

AG: Yes, RCT is also one of the parameters. But the customer base for RCTbased paper in India is not that high.

The cost of producing RCT based papers is also quite high, and no one is ready to pay any premium for it. Dev Priya also produces kraft paper based on RCT specifications when customers

demand and are ready to pay extra.

However, I don't foresee any demand appreciation for RCT-based paper in near future, say for the next five years.

The reason for this is primarily customer's unwillingness to pay for the cost difference between a RCT-based paper and that of a BF-based one. This cost difference is somewhat same as the cost difference between 28 BF and 22BF, which is signif icant if we calculate the financial cost for large volumes.

PM: The corrugation industry is increasingly becoming automated with installation of high speed machines. Is the kraft paper

industry ready to meet the corrugators' quality related demands, viz, strength, moisture, etc.

AG: At present, no one is running their machines below 300 mpm. The machines operating on 300 mpm are making use of rewinders with speed range of 800-1200 mpm. Most of the corrugators are operating their machines on a speed range of 200-250 mpm. Therefore, the production speed is commensurate with the speed of corrugation, and I don't think there would any problem of runnability on corrugators' end, until the quality of paper is poor viz. formation, moisture basic strength, etc.

I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W preparation sourced from Voith for producing fluting and testliners. We imported the major equipments and parts like rotors, baskets and refiners from Voith Germany. The pumps were provided by Andritz, steam & condensate system from Kadant Johnson along with Voith facilitating DCS for the stock preparation, scanners for the paper machine. The paper machines was however indigenous from Ruby Macons with some parts from Europe & China. Rewinder by The Globe Radio Co. and Paper Machine hood done by Brunnschweiler Spain. The electrical provided by Schneider & ABB. PM2 was the first ever machine in the kraft segment to include such technology combination sourced from pioneers in the industry.

We have our own captive powerhouse in Dev Priya papers which includes boiler from Thermax and Turbines commissioned by Triveni. We follow strict SOx-NOx guidelines with ESP to take care of suspended particles in the air. Due to the ban in pet coke around NCR, we are using coal & biomass products.

PM: Tell us more what Dev Priya is doing to meet the pollution norms.

Are you a ZLD company? How do you use the recycled water?

When it comes to quality, Dev Priya Industries has employed advanced automated systems for quality control.

T h e re a re o n l i n e m o n i to r s a n d scanners controlling the GSM and moisture along with spectrometers to analyze the color aspects as per the prescribed values. Our quality is truly at par with the industry international standards.

PM: Tell us something about the technologies Dev Priya Industries have?

AG: Dev Priya Industries have always been ahead when it comes to technology. Back in 2003, we converted our

plants from agro-based to recycledbased writing-printing and installed highly advanced Kadant Lamort stock preparation which was imported from France. Later, we converted the paper machine from W&P to kraft. This is our belief that paper is made in the stock preparation section itself; if you have quality pulp, you are more likely to produce quality paper. Moreover, when you have a state-of-the-art paper m a c h i n e , t h e i s s u e s re l a te d to machine's runnability, pin holes, breakage, and fiber orientation will automatically be taken care of.

In 2007, Dev Priya Industries put into work PM2 with complete stock

AG: Dev Priya Industries follows all the necessary steps to curb the pollution as directed by Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, Central Pollution Control Board and our in-house pollution department. Every step of production is monitored online, through CCTVs and by our trained professionals. Since May 2015, Dev Priya Industries has been ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge) with a closed-loop cycle.

We have an ETP installed to treat the waste water. Not only we treat the water, but maintain its quality with recycling technologies, using chemicals and the equipments. Both the machines in Dev Priya Industries are Zero Liquid Discharge.

The quality of the recycled water is good and can be used in almost every process including in high pressure showers. As a result our fresh water consumption has been reduced below 2 cubic meter/tonne of paper, which is a worldwide standard. We have been following this standard since the time we commissioned PM2 in 2009. We have been using fresh water only where it is required, like in processes such as cooling, showers, etc. You

cannot use recycled water at certain steps. Most of the mills are using fresh water in vacuum pumps, but we have been using recycled water since long period.

PM: Recently, China has stopped the imports of several grades of waste paper? How will it affect the export and domestic market in India? How is the future of this export upsurge?

AG: The move will benefit the export in India, but mainly for the mills located near the port. For mills like Dev Priya, which is operating from Delhi/NCR region, the cost (by the time it reaches a port) can go up to Rs. 4/Kg, i.e. Rs. 4000 a tonne, which is significant. Export is not something which we are contemplating right now.

The spur in export because of Chinese ban, according to me, is not likely to

remain a lasting phenomenon. Some companies might claim to export a major chunk of their production.

However, they would fail to give you any consistent export data displaying a uniform overseas business throughout year, or say over 2-3 years.

The possibility of this export to stay for a long term seems doubtful. China has started setting up or leasing paper mills in The United States. It is presumed that Chinese paper mills in US are making use of waste paper to produce paper without any value addition and are sending these poor quality papers to their homeland to be used as raw material in local mills.

PM: What are your plans on capacity expansion?

AG: That would come with the new plant and we are a bit reserved about going for a new plant seeing the current demand in the industry.

PM: Kraft paper is expected to have a double digit demand growth and may increases by 1 million tonne per year. Do you think the installed capacity would meet such future demand?

AG: These are just the figures. If demand is so robust in India, two things will happen -- first, India will stop exporting; second, we will get better price here. Both of these things we are yet to witness.

The way demand is being projected on papers, it doesn't exist in reality.

Demand is there but not as much as it is being projected or shown in various reports and surveys. Double digit figure is doubtful as of now. It may be though possible once in three years, not every year. One has to be positive here but figures need to be little conservative.

PM: Which segments will grow in the next 3-5 years? What are your

views on the overall growth outlook of the industry in coming years?

AG: The growth is bound for all, be it W&P, newsprint, or packaging grade.

As mentioned earlier, packaging will be the major beneficiary of the projected growth. I however believe that all the segments will grow together. With the growth in e-commerce and organized retail, the demand for packaging is increasing in all grades, be it testliner, fluting, or KLB.

PM: Would you like to add anything to this conversation?

AG: As a responsible citizen, we should be honest to our work ethics. We should safeguard both our employees and environment. Also, the industry must have some social responsibility, and work towards providing better products to the end consumers.

Paper Mart: Brief us about the Binjusaria Papers Pvt. Ltd. and the new plant you have built?

Shivank Kedia: The mill marks our first venture in the paper industry, and we have tried our best to keep up with the latest technology while setting up the mill. The mill's pulping section is

truly state-of-the-art along with one of the smoothest approach flow section secured from Kadant Lamort. The paper mill is fully automated with DCS from Siemens.

Being the first venture, quality remains the top priority to cement our position in the paper industry. We have been quite cautious while choosing technology and equipment for our mill and have consulted the best set of suppliers such as Valmet, Siemens, GL&V etc. The

The steam and condensate system is again from Kadant Johnson whereas press rolls and dryers are from China. We have invested a significant amount in WTP and ETP systems to ensure water availability and environment compliance in our mill.

right time in any industry; but I think we have entered the paper industry at a very good time when the overall market is upbeat and each segment is growing, more so the packaging segment. Ecommerce and organized retail have given an unimaginable push to the packaging demand along with overall improvement in packaging practices in almost all the industry.

PM: Binjusaria as a group has history in other industrial verticals.

Can you throw a bit of light on that?

Today, you can't imagine a product, good or bad, without packaging. The packaging has not only become synonymous with quality but is also a compulsion for the consumer market.

A neat and high quality packaging is a key to success for any business because packaging is what the potential consumer sees first, before looking at the actual content of the product. This trend in packaging has led to a subsequent growth in the industry, and we expect a much better growth in the future as well.

SK: I am a third generation entrepreneur from our family. Our journey started with oil and steel industry. After gaining a good experience in the family-run business, my father pushed me into searching a good industry. In the paper industry, I had few associates, who helped me gain adequate exposure to the industry motivating me to start Binjusaria Papers Pvt. Ltd.

PM: What is the capacity of the machine and total outlay for the project?

SK: It's a kraft paper mill with a capacity of over 300 TPD, and the total outlay of the plant is around INR 150-175 cr. The plant is located at the Shadnagar near Hyderabad. We are producing higher grade kraft paper as the technology, especially the pulp section from Kadant Lamort and other equipment, is world class and more suitable for producing higher graders than the lower ones.

PM: What markets are you serving currently? Any marker expansion plans?

SK: Currently, we have our client base in Hyderabad, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. Also we are currently exploring the export markets.

PM: There are a lot of investments in packaging segment, be it kraft paper or high-end packaging paper and boards. Do you think the timing is good for your entry into the market?

SK: There is usually no such thing as

PM: There is an increasing focus on environment and minimizing the resource consumption in paper mills. Your take on the matter?

SK: In the planning stage only, we were quite clear about our environmental commitments as an efficient production process goes hand-in-hand with environmental compliance norms.

Today, ETP conjointly plays a crucial role in the production process by treating the effluent and retrieving usable water, thereby minimizing overall fresh water consumption in mills. In Binjusaria Paper, we have created a closed water loop in order to achieve zero liquid discharge and have installed WTP and ETP sourced from Krofta.

PM: The paper industry is capital intensive. How did you persuade yourself to invest a sizeable capex having no prior experience in the paper industry?

SK: When I was in the exploration or research phase, I could not even think of setting up a 300 TPD state-of-the-art mill at the initial stage. However, after careful survey of the industry and

analyzing strengths of various successful mills, I learned one very important lesson, i.e. investing in quality and technology has sure returns if applied in tune with strong marketing strategy.

Investing on a high quality product with a sizeable capex pinches you just once, but investments on low quality and inferior technology give you constant pain. Considering all these aspects, we consulted various people from the industry for the right guidance. My family has been immensely supportive in the entire endeavor and helped me set up this mill.

PM: When will the products be commercially available for the market?

SK: As we speak, the commercial production is going on at full speed and quality is being maintained.

PM: From your perspective, what opportunities and challenges you see in the paper industry?

SK: Based in Hyderabad, we researched the local market and found that there is a gap in the market in terms of availability of higher kraft paper grades. In other words, we observed that no one is making grades 24 BF and above. Based on the observation, we decided to set up a mill to produce higher grade kraft paper, initially creating a niche in local markets like Hyderabad, where quality kraft of higher grades were brought from regions like Nagpur, Vapi, and other areas. So, this was an opportunity for us.

Talking about challenges, paper is a commodity product and there are many big players in the kraft paper industry. So, the competition in the industry is a challenge we have to live by. Nevertheless, till the time we are producing quality product, there is nothing to worry about.

PM: Are there any expansion plans for future?

SK: See, there is no stopping us once we stabilize and attain maximum production. We will surely plan our next move as to whether increase the capacity of the existing mill or plan for specialty grades.

Paper Mart: Tell us briefly about JMC Paper Tech and how it started making machines for the pulp and paper industry?

Rajni Patel: JMC was formed in the year of 2002 as manufacturer of pulp and paper, and cement mill machinery.

JMC Engineers is an offshoot of PATFAB group of industries known in India since the year 1975 in the field of paper and cement plant. Under the flagship, we concentrated on specializing our products for the paper segment and gradually updated the technology by improving infrastructure and adopting latest manufacturing tools. Earlier our factories were located at the industrial area of G.I.D.C., Vatva and CTM, Ahmedabad.

JMC group of industries is promoted by a group of experienced industrialists and technocrats with successful track records. PM: It has been more than one and a half decade for JMC fabricating machines for the pulp and paper industry. Tell us about the regions you have served so far. Do tell us about the kind of machines you have supplied so far to the industry?

PM: What are JMC's plans for the coming 3-5 years? Any specific target to be set on product and market fronts?

RP: JMC currently has substantial a m o u n t o f s p a ce wh e re a l l t h e machine making activities can be centralized at one shop. We found that Sanand GIDC is one of the fastest growing industrial areas with the best infrastructure and is thriving with companies such as Tata Motors, Ford Motors, Colgate Palmolive, Hitachi among others. We set up a new workshop in Sanand GIDC in the year 2016 and shifted the entire establishment in a 5500 sq m working area with all modern precision machinery, fabrication shop, paint shop and an assembly line having sectional erection facility on sole plates. This resulted in quick erection of the machinery at customer's venue.

PM: The Indian pulp and paper industry is dotted with small and medium sized mills, more small ones. The technological need and affordability of these small mills are quite different from large integrated mills. Kindly explain what those differences are and how JMC caters to those differing needs without compromising on the quality?

PM: You have served the industry quite long. Tell us what you found about technological need and challenges of the industry. Do tell

RP: Total paper consumption is targeted to increase from 17 to around 24 million tonnes within five years.

Paper industry is at present the most favored segment attracting entrepreneurs due to growing demand of paper.

Every 1 kg increment of per capita consumption creates million tonnes of demand per year in India as well as outside country. JMC has planned and strengthened its marketing force to get the advantage of market at peak in the need of machinery. To meet future demand, within the period of 2 months, JMC will proudly announce the inauguration of their expansion by extending the working space by another 6000 sq m, adjacent to the existing shop and enabling us handle more projects per annum.

PM: Give us your views on the growth of the pulp and paper industry in the next few years to come. Would JMC do something specific to serve that growth?

RP: Our R&D is basically working on the market needs and trying to adopt the latest technology which is available for the high capacity machines. We rework on those technology and redesign the same logic which are suitable for our range of paper machines. This way we could do some good work for projects.

We have little share in developed economies but we are continuously improving our presence there. For developing regions like Iran and African countries, we are working round the clock. We expect our turnover to grow substantially in the current FY.

CCL, Showcasing Chinese Excellence Through Its Paper Machines The company is known to produce one of the fastest and most efficient paper machines in the world.

Having sold over 120 paper machines worldwide, CCL has quite a noticeable presence in the Indian subcontinent with some prominent names in its kitty as customers. The company has recently added a new workshop at its facility to produce parts and equipment for the paper machines it develops.

Paper Mart: Briefly tell us about the company, and when was it established?

Rong Ying: Sichuan Chengfa Paper Machinery Co. Ltd. (CCL) was established in 1989. It is the predecessor of Leshan

I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W Chengfa Paper Machinery Co., Ltd., which originated from a military enterprise AECC Chengdu Engine Co. Ltd. We are one of the biggest paper machinery manufacturers in China.

We have been exporting paper machines to Russia, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan and many other countries for the last 20 years.

PM: What kind of products do you have for the paper industry?

RY: Our product range includes machines for manufacturing high strength corrugated paper, kraft boxboard paper, coated duplex board/card paper, writing & printing and all kinds of specialty paper. We also provide all services related to paper machine erection and commissioning, and thereafter.

PM: Tell us something about the infrastructure you have?

RY: Our factory covers 260,000 sqm and has over 400 employees. We are a leading enterprise in this industry with strong design capacity and production strength with an annual sale of 320 million RMB. With 30 years of experience in innovation and development, we have achieved a capacity of producing 6-8 paper machines annually with the maximum finished deckle of 6600mm. So far, more than 120 paper machines have been put into operation successfully.

PM: How many machines have CCL delivered to the Indian market?

RY: In 2007, we delivered our first machine to Deevya Shakti Paper Mills Pvt. Ltd. located in Hyderabad.

Back in 2012, Emami Paper Mills Ltd. installed our machines in their facility in Balasore (Odisha). Emami Board machine were conjointly developed by CCL and a European supplier. The main machine was provided by CCL, while the European supplier delivered shoe press, calendars and other critical equipments. Our European associate ensures to follow set quality standard and uses technology that enhances the overall performance of the paper machines. Although the technology used in paper machines is European, the costing is substantially lower than our European counterparts.

In 2017, we have signed a contract to supply Kraft PM of deckle 5200 mm and design speed of 600 MPM to Jodhani Paper Mills, Bangalore.

PM: Are there any projects that you are currently involved with in India?

RY: We are in discussion with JK Paper Ltd., ITC Ltd, and a few other customers in India.

We have added a new workshop with 40 new CNC machines to manufacture the essential parts and equipment of our paper machines. We even work in two shifts to expedite the work and meet the deadline. CCL works in collaboration with prominent companies such as Andritz Group, IBS and Metso to build the whole paper machine system.

PM: Tell us more about the design capabilities of CCL? RY: Our design team comprises of fourteen staff, of which one of the senior persons was working with Valmet for the last 19 years. He is now helping us with his technical know-how and support. CCL is known for manufacturing one of the biggest and faster paper machines in China. Even ten years ago, we had a technical expertise to produce machines with the deckle size 5800mm and speed 900mpm. We constantly upgrade and carry out trials to develop faster machines and are now producing machines with the deckle size 6600mm and speed 1000mpm. CCL aspire to become one of the first manufacturers in China to develop paper machines with such specifications.

PM: What are the key factors that make CCL competitive in the market?

RY: We consider customer's requirements as our first priority.

If customers have specific design needs and costing priorities, we ensure to provide them with the tailor-made solutions within their budget without compromising with quality and efficiency of the machine.

Sanjeev Jain: If you recall my previous interview in Paper Mart given in October 2016, I mentioned

Maxim's plans to set up a manufacturing plant in the next 2-3 years in DelhiNCR. The idea was to meet the growing demands for local products in India, to increase our export footprint, and to expand the product portfolio. Well, I am very pleased to inform you that we have finally commissioned our new manufacturing plant at Greater Noida in June 2018 quite successfully. We produced our first chemical batch in August 2018, just within 3 months of commissioning, a huge achievement by our production team.

Our new plant is located in Greater Noida industrial zone and is an environmentally compatible plant with zero liquid discharge (ZLD). At present, we have three reactors with an existing capacity of 300 MT/month but with a provision of two more reactors to achieve our target of 600 MT/month by mid 2019. We have a fully equipped laboratory with all the latest facilities and lab equipment to ensure best possible quality checks on both our incoming raw materials and finished goods. Our plant is well located with an excellent road and port connectivity because both Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), which was recently inaugurated, and Dadri ICD port are within 10 Km distance from our plant.

Maxim Specialty Chemicals has been dealing with paper process and waste water treatment chemicals for many years. Now with the addition of this new production facility, we have expanded our product portfolio to include sugar and textile process chemicals as well. Further, we have also started catering to OEMs, mainly for wa s te wa te r t re a t m e n t ( W W T ) chemicals through our sister concern Spectrum International. This was done mainly to expand our footprints in WWT across industries due to the increasing focus on ETP, especially in view of ongoing CPCB guidelines including ZLD norms.

PM: Give us a brief outlook of your new product portfolio and key areas of their usage and the advantages that can be reaped by the recipient industry over a period of time?

SJ: We are currently producing approximately 200 MT per month of paper process chemicals and 100 MT per month of coagulants only for waste water treatment such as polyamine, Poly DADMAC, DCDA, PAC Blends, ACH Blends, etc. Therefore, our total current production is 300 MT per month which we hope to increase to 600 MT per month by mid-2019 by doubling the production of both paper process and WWT chemicals.

PM: Given the increasing regulatory pressure on the environment side, the pulp and paper industry may be keen in knowing what Maxim Specialty Chemicals can do to help them through its complete package of products and services for pulp and paper environment monitoring?

SJ: Yes, the regulatory pressure by CPCB on the environmental side has been increasing for the last few years on

all the process industries, especially the ones which are more water centric such as the paper industry. And therefore, the discharge norms for BOD, COD, color, etc are also being made stricter year after year especially in view of “Namami Gange” project undertaken by the current government.

Further, CPCB's guideline for ZLD is also posing greater challenges to paper industry because of higher water usages as compared to most other industries. All of these factors have certainly made the paper industry to look at their ETP more seriously than ever. The industry is now looking for solutions to keep its fresh water usage at the lowest possible level by optimizing processes and treating its waste water for maximum reuse. This is the area where Maxim Specialty Chemicals can pitch in to help the industry with its “cost effective solutions” given our broad product range of WWT chemicals. That coupled with our vast experience in ETP area across India and many other countries give us an advantage in addressing ETP related issues effectively. I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W has always been very proactive in coming up with new and innovative solutions through extensive in-house R&D activities to help the paper industry to address some of their ongoing issues such as odor/smell in paper, cracking in kraft paper, requirement of BF/RCT/CMT enhancement in packaging grades and color removal in discharge, etc.

PM: This is a buoyant phase for the Indian pulp and paper industry, full of Greenfield projects, expansions, rebuilds, and other project activities. How is Maxim Specialty Chemicals doing or will do in terms of growth in supply of its products and services? Kindly give some details? dewatering to meet the discharge norms as specified by CPCB time to time.

PM: How do you maintain the constancy in the quality of chemicals? Please explain about your in-house R&D facilities and

procedures therein, in brief?

SJ: We have fully equipped QA, QC and R&D departments at our new plant. While our QA assures the quality of incoming raw material, QC checks quality of our finished products. Maxim Specialty Chemicals

SJ: I agree this is one of the best times we are witnessing in paper industry especially in packaging and tissue grades. I am sure this trend will continue further given our growing e co n o my, co n s u m e r m ove m e n t towards packaged goods, and

I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W booming online business etc. That obviously is a good sign for all the allied industries associated with the paper industry such as chemical industry like ours. I certainly see that contributing to our good business growth over the last few years both in India and internationally.

PM: You may add something, which we might have left untapped by above questions?

SJ: We started with trading business back in the year 2010 with help of our business associations with some global brands. We finally launched our own brand “Maxim Specialty Chemicals” in the year 2012 to build our own product portfolio. We initially started with blending facility which was followed by a small manufacturing plant at Mumbai and then a bigger manufacturing facility at

Delhi-NCR. We were initially selling only in India. Our f irst export assignment was undertaken in the year 2013 to Indonesia and then many more countries followed. Now export constitutes over 30 percent of our total business revenue which we intend increasing to 50 percent. We are currently exporting to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Egypt, Bangladesh, South Africa, Dubai and Abu Dhabi and looking forward to add three more countries-- Turkey, USA and Australia in the year 2019. We have our off ices in India and Singapore and plan to open one in Dubai soon.

We have a pan-India presence with our technical sales people located across the country. We have two verticals: paper and WWT. We have recently started sugar and textile verticals to expand our foot prints across indus-

tries. Our sister concern Spectrum International will solely focus on OEM business across India and will have no conflict of interest with our direct business done by Maxim Specialty Chemicals because the product range offered by Spectrum Chemicals will be entirely different.

The objective of this business is to expand foot prints in WWT chemicals through OEMs. Maxim has indeed come a long way since its start up in the year 2010 and I have enjoyed seeing it become the company that it is today. However we still are a long way off from the milestone we have set for ourselves. We will continue to help our customers through our innovative and costeffective solutions and always strive hard to become better than what we are.

Paper Mart: Tell us some of the new developments at Forbes Marshall in general and for the pulp and paper vertical in particular. Is this true you are planning a new factory? If yes, kindly let us know some project details and the key areas of focus for the planned facility.

Forbes Marshall: Forbes Marshall is constantly innovating on its product range to provide customers with energy savings. Our steam and condensate systems now run on a new proprietary platform called the ER series which provides optimal performance at affordable costs and provides an IoT backbone for data analysis and

monitoring. We were the first company to introduce boilers connected to the internet, much before IoT became a buzzword and we have developed several products that are cloud connected, with a view to improve maintenance schedules and system uptime.

PM: What are some of the key milestones that your award winning mega facility has covered since its inception? Have there been any further investments in this facility?

FM: We have embarked on a phase 2 expansion plan to double our steam products and systems production capacity to serve our customers in major markets and bring in enhanced operational effectiveness.

PM: As a pioneering facilitator of energy efficiency, safety, productivity, and environment monitoring, tell us some of your newest additions in innovative product line, especially in steam engineering and environment monitoring for the pulp and paper industry.

FM: We have had several new products in steam engineering like the compact

thermodynamic steam trap range, flash jet pumps that minimize flash steam venting, a new range of SG iron control valves for accurate pressure and temperature control with inbuilt smart positioners. Thus, one could say that Forbes Marshall is constantly innovating on improved products that would deliver enhanced performance for a faster paper machine or pulp section with lower energy consumption.

PM: How closely do you think the steam or energy conservation/efficiency is related to overall environment conservation strategy? What are some of the critical ways and means Forbes Marshall can suggest the industry to adopt expeditiously or urgently?

This is not easy but will need sustained efforts by all stakeholders –the mills, the technology suppliers and the policy frameworks. Every mill needs to commit itself to a 10% energy reduction year-on-year, and make it their priority for attention and investments. The obvious wastages need to plugged forthwith. Energ y eff icient best practices based on available technologies with attractive paybacks, which may need investment, need to be adopted. The global next practice can be taken up once the first two stages of implementation have been covered.

Thus every mill needs to define a 5-year energy reduction roadmap, which needs to be diligently followed, with expert advice where needed.

PM: Given the increasing regulatory pressure on the environment side, the pulp and paper industry may be keen in knowing what Forbes Marshall can do to help them through its complete package of pulp and paper environment monitoring?

FM: Rather than reacting to regulatory pressure, I would suggest proactive engagement with local governments and pollution control authorities to implement what is needed, be it CEMS for stacks or water or effluent treatment issues. We do have a comprehen-

We can help them conduct a comprehensive audit of their current systems and then make recommendations for meeting the new benchmarks set by the authorities, and more so in terms of international best practice.

Our wide range of CEMS analyzers for gases like SOx, NOx and CO and dust analyzers, in addition to our water quality analyzers for BOD, COD, TDS, pH and conductvity and DO2 form a part of modern plant needs.

PM: This is a buoyant phase for the Indian pulp and paper industry, full of Greenfield projects, expansions, rebuilds, and other project activities. How is Forbes Marshall doing in terms of growth in supply of its products and systems? Kindly give some details!

FM: As mentioned earlier, Forbes Marshall is in close connect with the growing demands of green field projects and brown field expansions.

We also help existing plants to get more output with less energy from their current assets. We have gained a deeper understanding of the needs of the pulp and paper industry owing to our close association, and this has helped us design and engineer complete integrated systems for many of our customers. We provide solutions right from concept and design stage, to engineering of these systems right up to project implementation. This is done completely in house, with our proprietary technology developments.

Our extensive sales and ser vice network covers almost every paper cluster and enables our customers benefit from our quick response teams that have been deployed across these pockets.

PM: Tell us your views on the present growth of the Indian paper industry and its continuance. Has this growth been able to tap on the latest technological trends, or could it do better?

The need to consolidate and establish world scale capacities with good progressive management of energy and environment issues is essential. Managing costs well while maintaining quality of the product will catapult the Indian pulp and paper

FM: I think the Indian paper sector could do well to establish local Indian standards for energy efficiency and benchmark them against global values.

Many mills use local raw materials for production, causing deviations from global standards. First knowing the worst and best energy efficiency values for Indian mills would be the starting point to assess internal practices. These standards need to then align with TAPPI standards and mills need to create a

roadmap to reach those standards. Thus if the Indian industry shares performance data especially from an energy perspective, it would initiate a culture of collaboration in the journey towards implementing best practices. The CII Paper Tech and IPPTA seminars indeed contribute a great deal to this objective.

But what is needed to close the loop is documentation of these standards.

A.Celli Looks for Closer Business Ties With Indian Market

A.Celli Group has been present in the global paper and nonwovens markets with top-range technological solutions for over 70 years. The group has been active in India too but now wants more wider presence in the growing market for its state-of-the-art tissue plants and paper machine equipment.

Paper Mart: Brief us a little about A.Celli Group and what kind of offerings you have for the paper industry.

Simon Lorenzetti: The A.Celli Group has been present in the market for the last 75 years. We are the third generation of the family-run business. The company has been steadily growing and has now become a global brand.

We are now investing a lot in the emerging markets like India because of huge business potential here. We desire to capitalize on our investments

and create lasting business relations in the Indian paper and tissue industry.

Talking about our products, we offer a complete tissue plant-- from stock preparation and tissue machine to reel -- for the customer's turnkey projects besides supplying isolated machinery and equipment for paper and tissue mills. The year 2018 turned out to be quite productive as we delivered three complete plants, five tissue machines, 15 winders (paper and tissue) and many updates and retrofits. We are looking forward to cater few more projects of similar capacities in 2019 and expect to achieve more prof itability. Our turnover is firmly growing because of our growing presence worldwide.

PM: Brief us about the projects undertaken by A.Celli Group for the Indian market?

SL: A.Celli so far has installed three machines in India. It took us some time to connect with Indian clients but the effort resulted in some lasting business relations and good projects in the country. In coming days, A.Celli would not only try to deepen the relations with the existing clients but would also try to broaden its base in the country by acquiring new clients.

We believe in personally approaching the customers, talking to them, and creating a long lasting relation. We have interacted with around twenty customers in the last ten months. Our brand name and the work we do with clients are sure to pave the way for us in this country by acquiring us further projects.

A.Celli believes in continuous collaboration with its clients right from the beginning of the project to its completion, and thereafter. Our collaboration begins even before the project starts with discussion on all technological trends, both current and future. The most important part of our job is to be present with the customers and be their reliable partner.

PM: How many machines has A.Celli installed in India in the last 2-3 years?

SL: The machines we delivered to our clients in India are 6-10 years old.

However, we are working on few projects that would include installation of tissue machines, tissue rewinders and paper rewinders. A.Celli is in constant touch with the big players of the Indian paper industry and is looking forward to collaborating with them on their upcoming projects.

PM: India is a price conscious market and A.Celli is known for offering one of the best technologies at par with the other frontline suppliers. What approach do you take in convincing customers to invest in your machines?

SL: First of all, we need to explain to customers logically why there is a price differentiation and whether the differentiation is justifiable. With detailed discussion on various features of our technology, customers start to see the rationale behind the price and they understand that initial price is just one part of the project – machinery life, overall maintenance cost, energy consumption, efficiency, etc. must always be kept in mind while discussing the price. If the technology is robust, durable, and efficient, it saves you far more than you initially invest in it.

We are of course aware that there is a difference between the price of an Italian machine and an Indian or Chinese machine. However, if you consider the entire life of the machine along with its state-of-the-art automation and the value it adds to your entire project, the technology we provide is far more advanced, and of course different. With more than 70 years of experience in the market, we have been able to put forward the tried and tested technological approach resulting in improved quality and controlled energy consumption. Most of the

times, customers only take the initial price into consideration while other parts of the costing are neglected. We understand the customer's dilemma but at the end you have to consider the complete package.

PM: The Indian market is expected to have a good number of projects in the next five years. What will be your approach to seize the opportunities?

SL: The tissue market in India has a huge potential because of very low per capita tissue consumption in the country, close to a mere 0.2 kg in contrast to global average of 15 kg. So, it's easily understandable why the tissue industry is expecting booming growth in the country with over 1.3 billion population. Opportunities are going to be huge in both the tissue and paper industry.

I strongly believe that India has lot to offer when it comes to paper consumption and this has led us to participate for the first time in Paperex South India t ra d e s h ow. Mo re ove r, we h ave partnered with New Horizon Enterprise, our new agency based in Bangalore, and are expecting to grow our presence in the Indian market. We are also aware of linguistic, cultural, and time zone challenges which make t h e s u p p l i e r- c l i e n t i n te ra c t i o n difficult. A.Celli therefore is considering to set up a more solid structure in India along with appointment of local associates. The goal is only to facilitate a productive interaction and services for our Indian customers.

Of course we need to install some new machines in India before as this would help us in creating a good brand recognition in the market. As mentioned earlier, we have more than 75 years of experience and have our presence all over the world. We have been selling machines from Mexico to China and are very confident in doing business in India.

Kindly tell us what was the idea behind this paper-based venture of yours?

Marc Aurel Hartung: I've been studying graphic design and always searched for new product ideas to connect my passion for art and product design. Our first and still very successful product was the Pappwatch, a wristwatch made of paper. That was eight years ago. Our customers loved the idea and from there we launched new paper-based products each season.

PM: Do brief us about this paper 'Tyvek' which you use in making your products! How is this paper produced?

MAH: Tyvek® paper has outstanding features. The printing process is easy; it can be treated like fabric; and is at the same time tear proof and water resistant. It is a synthetic paper made of high-density polyethylene fibers produced by DuPont in France.

MAH: We regularly present our brand on the most important international fairs and also use online marketing via Facebook and Instagram which helps us to get in contact with a growing number of customers. Our main customers are not only big concept stores and museum stores, but also are smaller shops with focus on art and design.

PM: Making paper-based useful, enduring and aesthetic products is not easy. How do you create such products? How many people do you collaborate with?

PM: Do you think your paperbased products are going to make a difference on the environment sustainability front, paper being a biodegradable and sustainable product?

MAH: Our core team consists of 15

Our goal is to create long-lasting products and to minimize the material and energy consumption of their production. Tyvek® is 100% recyclable and can be recycled up to five times to new Tyvek®; the water used in the production is reused many times.

In addition, other moral considerations come into play when we take into account the nature of animal husbandry in the use of animal fiber.

Tyvek® can easily replace leather in the use for wallets and other accessories.

PM: Are there other companies too, experimenting with this kind of concept? If not, then how far do you project your growth in terms of creating a growing business and offering a practical product line, which other companies may also think to follow?

MAH: We are happy to see more and m o r e b r a n d s u s i n g Ty ve k ® f o r producing accessories and even fashion. Our concept of collaborating with artists is still quite unique and we never stop experimenting with new materials and new ideas. I think that sustainability is a very important aspect and should be considered by every company who wants to offer contemporary products.

This step can be taken by committees like CPPRI, IPPTA, state level associations and even the various paper mills can help in contributing to the exact data on the production. Once the figures are collected, there should be a way forward to evaluate the exact production and consumption. Working on wrong f igures doesn't help the industry. Instead of repeating in every conference the same figures, which is far from the exact figures to say the least, little rework can be done to present the correct figures."

He said, "I think that issues are very c l e a r b e f o re t h e i n d u s t r y, a n d

whatever figure we agree to, hardly 15 percent are from agro based paper mills, around 28 percent are from wood based mills and bulk of the production is coming from recycled paper based mills which is 56-58 percent today. Also, most of the new capacities and expansions are coming from recycled mills sector."

Speaking on raw material security, Mr. Kumar said, "We often face issues with the availability of raw material and fiber. In fact, as far as availability of fiber is concerned, all the three sectors - be it wood based, agro, or recycled mills -- we have to come out with a specific policy regarding making

The statistics revealing the figures for installed capacity and actual production in the Indian paper industry has been questioned on more than one occasions in the past. Raising the same doubt over these figures again Mr. Anil Kumar, Executive Director and CEO of Shreyans Industries Ltd. said, "The data from various sources about production figures vary vastly and do not give clear cut picture in order to prepare ourselves as per actual on-ground scenario. All the statistics including data from CPPRI, IPPTA talk about 17-19 million tonnes but general consensus is that we are not less than 25 million tonnes in actual production as far as India is concerned. If that's the actual case, it alters ever ything. Not only our planning based on 18-19 million tonnes production figure is wrong but also the estimate of per capita consumption being just 14 kg is erroneous. For a 25 million tonnes production, per capita consumption must be hovering somewhere around 18 kg. " Mr. Kumar further stressed the need of credible data collection from the industry giving right picture. "The first step is to cautiously find out at least

wastelands and forest areas available to the paper industry for plantations to source its own raw material. Regardless of the efforts put in by the industry in areas of social and farm forestry, the availability of raw material still remains an unresolved issue. While the requirement of wood and fiber is being met, the cost is really exorbitant as compared to what International industry pays for a tonne of wood. A serious note of this should be taken into consideration that what can be done. On one end, we have a large degraded forest land which is going from bad to worse year on year; and on the other, the authorities are doing nothing to make those forest areas available to the paper industry.

"For agro-based mills, the competing usage of bagasse for cogeneration in

sugar mills and rice straws are not coming as per mills' requirements as an alternate source of fiber. The fiber sources remain again a very big issue as far as agro-based mills are concerned.

"Talking about the recycled mills with 56-58 percent of total production, the collection system still remains below par. In countries like Japan, the collection rates has gone up significantly to 70 percent against a meager 20-23 percent in our country. Some efforts are being taken by CPPRI and Development Council for Pulp Paper & Allied Industries to undertake pilot projects in certain cities where some kind of framework could be put in place to make more recycled fibers available to the industry."

good thing about the paper industry in India is that the demand growth is still intact. In packaging sector, we are almost growing at double digit figures year-on-year, estimated at more than ten percent. As far as W&P paper is concerned, the growth driver is of course the education sector. For a developing nation like India, the education in the foreseeable future would be through paper route only.

Education through e-learning and digital methods will take some time to emerge in India. Tissue is also one of the fastest growing sectors though the percentage of 15-20 percent means nothing and could be deceptive as far as absolute tonnage is concerned.

However, the demand of tissue paper is fast coming up and the industry is now concentrating on installing more

capacities in tissue segment.

Surprisingly, when newsprint is dying the world over, we still have a positive growth in the country as far as newsprint consumption is concerned.

All the four sectors -- packaging, writing & printing, newsprint, and tissue -- have high demand growth, which is a positive sign for the paper industry."

Mr. Agarwal raised the concern of low waste paper recovery rate in India and said, "The segment needs an increased recovery rate. The collection of waste paper in India is very poor compared to the rest of the world, especially countries like Japan. Our recovery rate is only 17-30 percent against the world's average of 60-70 percent. We still have to go a long way in increasing the recovery rate. A number of committees studying the subject have suggested various steps to be taken by the government as well as the society to reduce the import of waste paper.

"Today we are importing around 10-12 million tonnes of waste paper and only 3-4 million tonnes are recovered domestically, out of 18 million tonnes consumption. There is a great scope of improvement there. There is a need to

create awareness amongst the households to segregate the waste paper and avoid mixing other material with it.

Similarly, the use of the waste paper other than recycling for papermaking should be discouraged through appropriate policies formed by the government. The government along with the society may undertake campaigns for increasing the recovery rate."

ndia has emerged as the fastest growing paper market amongst large economies in the world. In the last 10 years, the domestic demand has almost doubled from around 9 million tonnes in FY 2007-08 to over 17 million tonnes in 201718.

The 19th Annual Session and Awards Function of the Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA) was held on 11th January 2019 at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi. The event was attended by more than 150 participants.

The industry estimates the overall paper demand to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 6-7 percent, reaching to about 20 million tonnes by FY 2019-20, this was stated by Mr. Saurabh Bangur, President Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA) at the 19th Annual Session of Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA).

According to IPMA, Make in India in paper is threatened in view of comparatively higher cost of raw material especially wood and cheaper imports which have been growing at a pace faster than growth in domestic production.

Even as the industry is grappling with the issue of producing paper and paperboard at competitive cost, the problem has been exacerbated by the Government's policy of extending preferential tariff treatment to import of paper and paperboard under the different free trade agreements (FTAs) and other bilateral and multilateral trade agreements and pacts.

“Paper is a key segment of Indian industry and Government is committed to ensure domestic manufacturing. Government will consult the industry before embarking upon any further Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). Domestic players need to get priority to meet the demand. One of the main objectives of the trade policy has to be promotion of domestic manufacturing”,

almet has received an order to supply a tissue production line to Century Pulp and Paper in India. The new Valmet advantage tissue line will be installed at CPP's mill in Lalkuan, India. The order is included in Valmet's fourth quarter 2018 orders received.

The order is Valmet's second tissue machine delivery to CPP's Lalkua mill. Cooperation between the companies started in 2008 when CPP's first Valmet tissue machine was installed.

he Jakarta-headquartered Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), which is a part of the Indonesian Sinar Mas Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) to develop a five million TPA Greenfield pulp and paper plant in Prakasam district, subject to regulatory approvals and other requirements.

As reported in the leading daily, the MoU was signed by J. Krishna Kishore, Chief Executive Officer, Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) and Suresh Kilam, Executive Director, Asia Pulp & Paper, in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Spread over an area of 1,000 hectares (2,471 acre), the total investment amounts to approximately Rs 24,000 crore ($3.5 billion), making it one of the largest FDIs in the country till date.

The machine and equipment for the plant will be supplied by NKR Engineers Private Limited from Ahmedabad and Chinese suppliers. The total outlay of the project is around INR 30 cr. It will cover the markets in Vapi, Mumbai, Surat and other nearby areas.

Vidhisha Paper also operates a 3000 TPM state-of-the-art corrugation plant in Vapi. groPaper is a renewable and compostable paper designed to replace the plastic material that is used by many farmers and growers for mulching when growing vegetables. Mulching refers to placing a material (mulch) on the ground to improve the soil around plants, prevent weeds growing and maintain the temperature of the land.

A team of specialists from Smurfit Kappa's Nervion and Sangüesa Paper Mills worked with the INTIA (a research centre for agrifood technology in Spain) to identify a way to use long pine fibres from sustainably managed local forests as a basis for the new paper. The polythene that is most commonly used for mulches can be difficult and costly to remove and leaves behind small fragments that can be consumed by animals.

AgroPaper, on the other hand, is an eco-friendly material that safely and harmlessly biodegrades as a compost into the ground. Tests on AgroPaper revealed that in many cases the crop yield actually increased. n

NDRITZ has successfully started the PrimeLineCOMPACT VI tissue production line, including stock preparation and automation system delivered to Bashundhara Paper Mills Limited in Bangladesh.

The 16 ft. PrimeDry Steel Yankee is made entirely of steel, enabling high and efficient drying performance and was manufactured at the ANDRITZ Steel Yankee Business Center in Foshan, China. For ANDRITZ, it is the first high-speed tissue machine to be installed in Bangladesh.

For the very first time, ANDRITZ has supplied a multi-motor drive (MMD) system with active line modules (ALM). The ALMs are designed for feeding energy back into the grid as a renewable energy solution, they offer low line harmonics that meet the demands of IEEE 519 and they enable stable operation of the motor, even with irregular power supply systems.

The entire tissue machine MMDs are powered from a common DC-busbar as are the approach flow and the air ventilation systems at times. The ANDRITZ LV motors are installed from fiber preparation to the tissue machine auxiliary system.

Stora Enso Announces Startups Selected for its Second Accelerator Programme Over the next few months, the startups will work side by side with Stora Enso participants, delving into and advancing know-how, capabilities, technologies and market opportunities.

tora Enso has chosen six startups to join its second accelerator programme, a joint startup initiative organized by Stora Enso, A alto Universit y D eveloping Entrepreneurship (Aalto ENT) and Vertical Accelerator.

The accelerator programme provides an exceptional opportunity for disruptive startups and Stora Enso to actively ideate and innovate new solutions. This year's programme focuses specifically on the circular economy, especially in regard to circular solutions, raw material management, packaging, separation and sorting, and energy.

The final six startups emerged from a rigorous and competitive selection process. After submitting a written application and video, more than 85 startups were evaluated and filtered down to the top forty. Reviewed by Stora Enso Scouts and Vertical, twenty of these startups were invited to Selection Days, a twoday event for presentations and intensive interviews. A shortlist of twelve startups was presented to Stora Enso's group leadership team for the selection of the final six. n

Co-location will take place at Vertical Accelerator, one of the largest and most prominent startup communities in Finland.

Palak Paper Mill Starts Production of 300 TPD High BF Kraft Liner The major production will be carried out for high BF and it will be available in the range of 140-350 GSM and 20-35 BF. December 13, 2018

alak Paper Mill in Morbi has installed a three-wired 300 TPD machine sourced from China to meet the rising demand for kraft liner. The new machine comes with finished deckle size 3800 mm and design speed 300-350 mpm. It is producing kraft paper, high BF kraft liner, test liner, waterproof kraft liner and coated/uncoated white top kraft liner grades. The annual production capacity of the mill is 108000 TPA. Palak Paper has adopted total quality management system (TQMS) in order to provide best quality products. There is an ETP installed in the mill capable of achieving zero liquid discharge to produce odorless and quality paper for food grade paper production. n The 300 TPD state-of-the-art paper mill commercially began production on December 2018.

Valmet Fiber Furnish Analyzer provides fast and precise online measurement of key fiber and furnishes properties for paper, board and tissue makers.

New image analysis techniques enable the Valmet Fiber Furnish Analyzer to automatically measure a wider range of furnish properties. The analyzer is ideal for process control and with the addition of a remote manual sampling station; it is also a valuable laboratory tool providing fast and accurate analyses.

Rather than relying on infrequent and time-consuming laboratory tests, machine operators will now have the information to act quickly and decisively. Better control of refining levels, monitoring of incoming pulp quality or fiber blend optimization are further improved with the built-in Valmet data modeler and Valmet soft sensor, which continuously predict pulp strength properties from a combination of measured properties. n

NDRITZ has received an order to supply a new ATMP (Advanced Thermo Mechanical Pulp) line to Kabel Premium Pulp and Paper Mill, Hagen, Germany. Start up is scheduled for the final quarter of 2019.

ANDRITZ will refurbish second-hand machines that Kabel Premium bought from a former magazine paper production line in Germany. In order to meet Kabel Premium's high demands with regard to energy efficiency and fiber quality, ANDRITZ will install several new, key equipment units: a new MSD Impressafiner to delaminate and impregnate chips even more gently and efficiently as well as new fiber centrifuges to guarantee superior fiber/steam separation. Two second-hand and refurbished ANDRITZ high-consistency refiners will form part of the first and second refining stages. The scope of supply also includes the DCS system, complete installation of the scope delivered, basic engineering, commissioning, and start-up. n

almet and Kemira have signed a partnership agreement in developing wastewater and sludge treatment customer applications for municipal and industrial plants in Europe.

Reliable real-time measurement data will increase the water treatment process visibility and enable predictive and proactive process management. The target is to bring significant savings and efficiency improvements to customers.

The partnership combines Valmet's comprehensive analyzer and measurement technology, process optimization knowhow and on-site service network with Kemira's strong chemistry and process optimization expertise in the municipal and industrial water treatment space. .Celli Paper has signed an agreement to supply two EWIND® P100 rewinders to the Chinese group Shanying Huazhong Paper Industry for the mill located in Jingzhou District, China.

The machines, with start-up scheduled for the third quarter of 2019, will allow the Chinese group to process high-quality flat paper and testliner paper of the lowest grammage (from 50 to 110 GSM).

The rewinders will be able to accommodate large reels on the unwinder, with diameters up to 3800 mm and weighing about 65 ton. In addition, they are combined with sophisticated technological innovations like Innovative Slittomatic® double motor cutting unit positioning system, built-in spool-parking and web-in technology- the automatic system that maximizes the management of positioning cutting units without the need to break the web. n

NDRITZ has received an order from Holmen's Iggesund Paperboard to supply fiberline process technology and equipment to their Iggesund mill in Sweden.

ANDRITZ's scope of supply encompasses-- modernization of the brownstock washing process, including a new multistage DD-Washer with compact layout, a new oxygen delignification stage for optimizing the kappa level to achieve highest possible yield and minimum chemical consumption, relocation of the existing screening process after the oxygen delignification stage in order to minimize fiber losses, bleaching plant modernization by changing the existing 5-stage bleaching system to 4-stage bleaching and cooler for digester blow temperature control. The DD-Washer is also very gentle to fibers, retaining all the bulk, stiffness and strength of the pulp as there is no mechanical pressing during pulp washing. n
