Estate of Leona Bersadsky, MD

Leona Bersadsky, MD was a 1965 graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine and a devoted practicing psychiatrist in New Orleans for more than 40 years.

Dr. Bersadsky had deep ties to Tulane University. Prior to earning her medical degree, she graduated from Newcomb College in 1947 and from Tulane University School of Science and Engineering with a master’s degree in 1949. Following medical school, she completed an internship in 1966 and a fellowship in 1970 with Tulane Medical School.

She loved traveling the world with her longtime companion Dr. Dorothy Bratsas.

Dr. Bersadsky died in October of 2018. She made a special bequest to establish the Dr. Leona Bersadsky Scholarship Endowed Fund. This fund provides scholarships and tuition assistance to female residents of Louisiana with demonstrated financial need to attend Tulane University School of Medicine.

Estate of Robert J. Brennan Jr.

Robert James (Jim) Brennan Jr. graduated from Tulane University College of Arts & Sciences in 1971. During Jim’s time at Tulane, CACTUS, the Community Action Council of Tulane University Students, was officially established to expand and enhance students’ previous involvement in service projects. Today, Tulane continues its long tradition of community service, and Tulane students, through the CACTUS Academy, are taking an active role in cultivating student leaders who are community conscious.

Jim moved to St. Petersburg, Florida after college, where his impact in community engagement and unique sense of place included neighborhood revitalization and historic preservation. He served in various posts for the Crescent Lake Neighborhood Association, the North Downtown Neighborhood Association, and St. Petersburg Preservation, Inc.

In his will, Jim bequeathed significant resources to support the University’s highest priorities, to enable innovation, and to provide fuel for growth.

Robert P. Dean Jr., FAIA and Robert A. Epstein

Robert (Rob) Paul Dean, FAIA, FCSI is widely acknowledged as one of the most experienced and knowledgeable experts on automated specification systems in the country. He has invented and developed many innovative software products that have helped thousands of architects nationwide produce accurate, up-to-date, and better coordinated construction documents more efficiently and economically than would otherwise be possible.

A devoted alumnus of Tulane, Rob graduated first in his class and later returned as an assistant professor of architecture for six years. He taught a number of technical subjects in addition to design studios, instructing students in subjects as diverse as building construction, architectural acoustics, energy conservation in buildings, mechanical and electrical equipment of buildings, and alternative energy sources, including solar energy and wind power. He also served on the Architecture Dean’s Advisory Council.

In the 1980s, Rob, a licensed architect, served as vice president at a large Atlanta-based architecture and engineering firm. There, he invented the first commercial automated specification system in the United States. The system was later transferred to the American Institute of Architects, where Rob served as director of the project until it was moved from Atlanta to Washington, D.C. in 1993.

He then joined Building Systems Design as vice president and was responsible for expanding its product line and services beyond construction cost estimating. He eventually served as chairman of the board for BSD, as well as the President and CEO until the sale of the business in 2017.

Rob was elected as a fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2014. He is also a fellow of the Construction Specifications Institute.

Rob met Robert A. (Rob) Epstein in 1983 and they have been together ever since, marrying in 2008. Together they have been on more than 60 cruises and visited over 90 countries. Rob Epstein is a native Texan who received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas in Austin and an MBA from SMU. When he moved to Atlanta in 1982, he was the top salesperson in the nation for Xerox commercial products. He subsequently moved into wireless communications and worked for several companies at the vanguard of the mobile phone industry. His career has focused on sales and marketing, and in 2010 he assumed the role of Sales and Marketing Director at Building Systems Design, where he stayed until his retirement in 2017.

Rob Dean attended Tulane on a scholarship. He and Rob established charitable remainder trusts to support student scholarships at the School of Architecture in gratitude for the education Rob Dean received from Tulane.

John B. Elstrott Jr., PhD and Patty West Elstrott

John Elstrott is an entrepreneur and founder of the Levy-Rosenblum Institute for Entrepreneurship (LRI) and the Tulane Family Business Center at the A. B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University. John also founded the Freeman Consulting Club through which students provided free business and project support to small business and nonprofit organizations in the New Orleans metro area. Students who donated at least 25 hours of work over the course of the academic year were awarded The Freeman School Community Service award at graduation. This servicelearning program was a forerunner of what eventually became the University wide community service requirement for Tulane students. After teaching for more than 30 years and retiring in 2013, he is now Emeritus Director of the LRI.

As a doctoral student in economics at the University of Colorado, John met two men who were launching an herbal tea company. He joined them part-time and prepared loan applications, developed an inventory system and secured an appropriate location for their headquarters. Just about the time he graduated, the company began to be successful. That company was Celestial Seasonings. He stayed with the company for five years before he, his wife and two young children returned to Louisiana to be closer to their families.

John has a successful history of co-founding and investing in grocery, organic food products, environmental and technology companies, venture capital, restoration ecology and regenerative agriculture, advertising and marketing services, music audio hardware and software, functional food, herbal wellness, and manufacturing businesses. He may be best known as the former chairman of the board of directors of Whole Foods Market. Local entrepreneur Peter Roy sought John’s help to grow the New Orleans based Whole Food Stores in 1980. Those stores were acquired by Whole Foods Market in Austin, Texas in 1987. John joined the Whole Foods Market board in 1991 and in 2005 became its chairman. Over the decades he saw Whole Foods Market expand in three countries to employ 90,000 people.

John has been generous with his time and insight to Tulane. He is a past member of the Cowen Institute Advisory Committee (2007-2014); the Executive Education Board of Directors (2012); and the LRI Advisory Board. He was awarded the Tulane Distinguished Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the Tulane Outstanding Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2013 from the Tulane Council of Entrepreneurs. He served as a Business Model Competition Judge in 2015 and 2018.

Both of John and Patty’s children graduated from Tulane. Their daughter, Rachel NC ’00, double majored in English and philosophy. She is a clinical social worker/therapist. Their son, Justin TC ’02, double majored in philosophy (cum laude) and psychology (summa cum laude with department honors) before earning his doctorate in neuroscience at University of California at San Diego.

John and Patty have established a legacy gift to benefit the Levy Rosenblum Institute for Entrepreneurship.

Elizabeth Dabezies Goodyear and Charles W. Goodyear IV

Elizabeth Dabezies Goodyear is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Oliver H. Dabezies Jr. of New Orleans. Elizabeth’s father earned his undergraduate degree from Tulane in 1951 and his medical degree in 1954 and completed his residency at Tulane in 1958. He taught in the department of ophthalmology at Tulane University from 1960 until his retirement in 1999. Her mother, Carroll Collins Dabezies attended Newcomb College.

Dr. Dabezies was one of the pioneers in the development and use of contact lenses. Throughout his illustrious career, he held many leadership roles in national organizations. Dr. Dabezies served as a founding member and president of the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists (CLAO), served as its executive vice president for 11 years, and authored its textbook on contact lenses. Through his association with CLAO, he became involved with the American National Standards Institute and chaired the group that formulated standards for contact lens solutions. He also created the International Contact Lens Society of Ophthalmologists. He served on the board and was vice president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and was secretary of the American Medical Association Ophthalmology section. He was a widely published writer and editor, held four active hospital affiliations, was a member of 11 medical societies, a lecturer at national and international meetings, and maintained a busy practice. Dr. Dabezies helped to establish the Southern Eye Bank, serving on the board for 42 years and was president at the time of his death in 2001. He was the first recipient of the Eye Bank Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Dabezies was President of the Tulane Medical Alumni Association from 1991-1992, received Tulane Medical School’s Distinguished Service Award in 1994, and that same year was named Tulane Alumni Association’s Outstanding Alumnus.

The Goodyears, who have two children, established the Oliver and Carroll Dabezies Endowed Chair at Tulane School of Medicine to honor Elizabeth’s parents. This endowed chair will support the chairperson of the department of ophthalmology and their work in clinical practice, research, professional development, and service.

Estate of John F. Honecker

John F. Honecker graduated from Tulane College of Arts & Sciences with an English degree in 1968. Tulane extended well into the neighborhood during John’s years as an undergraduate. In fact, the New Orleans Saints played their first home football game on September 17, 1967, in front of 80,879 fans in Tulane Stadium. And in 1968, the campus footprint was expanding as well with the opening of the new Howard-Tilton Memorial Library on Newcomb Boulevard. The modern building included four floors of browsable stacks and a student lounge and snack area in the basement. The new building was designed to carry two additional floors, an asset that came into play after Hurricane Katrina struck almost 40 years later.

At the time of his death in October of 2020, John was living in Portland, Oregon. More than 50 years after his graduation, through his intentional planning and generous design, he included Tulane’s School of Liberal Arts in his will ensuring that students of today and tomorrow reap the benefits of a world-class Liberal Arts education.

Markham D. Oswald and Nancy Epstein Oswald

With more than 40 years of restaurant experience each, Mark and Nancy Oswald are co-owners of Sizzling Steak Concepts, the largest domestic franchisee of Ruth’s Chris Steak House restaurants and the developers of kitchen and cocktail brand, UP on the Roof. Mark became interested in the food industry while a student at Tulane running his fraternity’s kitchen. He began working at Commander’s Palace in 1977, where he later met Nancy. Nancy’s foodservice career began at Commander’s in 1978, working directly with owner Ella Brennan to oversee the restaurant’s sales and marketing department in addition to managing the company’s in-house advertising agency.

Nancy and Mark have worked together consistently since their time at Commander’s Palace in the late ‘70s. Today, the Oswalds own and operate eleven Ruth’s Chris restaurants in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee as well as two UP on the Roof locations (one in Alpharetta, Georgia and one in Greenville, South Carolina). Their son, Wilson, is the Director of Beverage for the company as well as the developer of UP on the Roof. Their daughter, Elizabeth, has enjoyed a career in fundraising for over fifteen years and currently serves as the director of institutional advancement for The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine in New York City.

Mark and Nancy have received numerous awards for their dedication to the hospitality industry including being selected “Atlanta’s Most Admired CEOS” by the Atlanta Business Chronicle in 2018, jointly receiving the GRACE Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 from the Georgia Restaurant Association, and as recipients of the Ruth U. Fertel Award in 2008. The highest accolade Ruth’s Hospitality Group, Inc. bestows, the Ruth U. Fertel Award is given to those individuals who most exemplify Ruth’s legacy of service, hospitality and commitment to the brand.

Nancy has served as past chair of the boards of the Georgia Restaurant Association and the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau, was inducted into the ACVB’s Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2011 and named to the Atlanta Business Chronicle ’s list of “100 Most Influential Atlantans” in 2013. She was a founding board member of The Giving Kitchen, an Atlanta non-profit dedicated to providing grants to Georgia foodservice workers with unanticipated hardships.

Mark has continued to give back to his alma mater by serving on the Tulane University Associates Board and the A. B. Freeman School of Business Council. Together, Nancy and Mark serve on the Atlanta National Campaign Council and enjoy hosting annual “Hello Wave” events in Atlanta for incoming freshmen and their families.

Together, the Oswalds are long-time and generous supporters of the A. B. Freeman School of Business and Tulane Athletics, including the Olive and Blue Society. They previously established the Oswald Endowed Fellowship and Endowed Entrepreneurial Hospitality Fund.

Estate of Alan H. Rosenbloum

Alan H. Rosenbloum earned a BBA from Tulane’s A. B. Freeman School of Business in 1961. As an undergraduate student, he was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, the Student Council, and the Tulane University Spirit Klub (TUSK). In 1959, he was elected Delta Sigma Pi’s second vice-president, and in 1960, he became the fraternity’s president. Alan went on to earn his law degree from Washington University, and he later became a successful attorney in Pensacola, Florida.

As an alumnus, Alan was a consistent fixture at Tulane athletic events, and was a member of the Green Wave Club for more than 20 years. His dedication to the Green Wave and to the university’s student athletes was lifelong and significant. Even when he was not in attendance at sporting events, Alan could often be found wearing Tulane gear to show others his allegiance to the Green Wave.

Alan passed away in 2019. Upon his death, Alan made a generous bequest to the university, leaving a legacy for the next generation of Tulanians. As a passionate collector of Green Wave memorabilia, including game programs, posters, and photographs, he also donated a sizeable collection of athletic ephemerae to Tulane as part of his estate.

Estate of K. D. Ruppert, MD

Karl Donald Ruppert, MD was a 1957 graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine. He worked as a fireman on a steam train to support his education while attending Tulane.

After enlisting in the Army and completing his residency in Monterey, California, he was stationed in Southeast Asia. Dr. Ruppert eventually moved to Olympia, Washington and began a general surgery practice before retiring in 1991. He operated the first fiberoptic gastroscope in the area in 1972.

His life outside of the surgical profession reflected a passion for travel, music, and deep-sea diving. He was a member of the South Pacific Undersea Medical Society and served as a dive doctor.

Upon his death in March of 2020, he bequeathed a generous gift to Tulane University to establish the Dr. Karl Ruppert Endowed Fund for general support of the university.
