THE INSIDE TRACK TO YOUR SCHOOL SKI TRIP
It’s easier than you think to navigate your school’s ultimate ski trip
John Bowden loved skiing in the mountains, with the bright blue sky and fresh powdered snow under his skis. He felt at peace and wanted others to experience this, too, which is why he founded SkiBound in 1985, one of the first school ski travel companies in the UK.
Since then, SkiBound’s trips have become a first-rate, efficient experience for teachers wanting to take a school group to the slopes. Yet that desire to capture the imagination and bring a new perspective to our young people remains very much the raison d’être for our expert team.
The truth is - we share that same love for skiing!
You’ll experience this at every stage of your journey with us, particularly with our English-speaking SkiBound Ski Reps, who are on the ground at your resort and dedicated to your school group to ensure a personalised experience.

Alex Bottoms, School Ski Group Party Leader at Reed’s School
SKI FRANCE High-altitude skiing at its best
Why is France ideal for school ski trips?
The Ski Experience - France boasts some of the best highaltitude skiing due to the resorts being located up in the mountains. This ensures an extended season of snow-sure slopes.
Many resorts offer ‘doorstep skiing’ - you’re often just a five-minute walk from your slopeside accommodation to the nearest lift. Speaking of lifts, increasing investment in more connected and faster lifts means your piste skiing now covers a broader area.
The ESF Ski School is regarded as one of the best in the world, and daily lessons can quickly progress students’ ski skills.
Off the Mountain - While you may not get the same traditional charm as Austria, France’s resorts have been purpose-built for skiing, with modern amenities and pedestrianised areas.
SkiBound has a rich 30-year history working in France. Due to our exclusive Clubhotels, we’ve got a local office run by British & French staff for added on-the-ground support.

Visit in the shoulder weeks before and after February half-term or after Easter to benefit from the lowest prices.
LA PLAGNE- Take your pick of the piste with Paradiski: over 400kms of skiable terrain.
Glacier skiing, anyone?
Many of France’s ski resorts are built on glaciers. While the name may sound dangerous, all glacier skiing means is that when snow lands, it won’t melt as fast, so you have a constant supply of fresh, powdery snow to ski on.
Top Tip - We recommend coach travel to France if you want to venture further afield and when visiting La Plagne, a resort dotted across the mountain.

Getting there
With France being the UK’s closest neighbour, the drive time by coach and Eurotunnel/ferry is one of the shortest. If you’re flying, there’s great connectivity from key UK airports.
It sometimes takes longer to reach the ski resorts due to the narrow roads up the mountain, but it’s a beautiful scenic route.
VALLOIRE - Be welcomed into this charming resort, ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers.
MONTGENEVRE - Unearth this hidden gem close to the Italian border and the only French resort in the Milky Way.

LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT
A TEACHER’S TOP TIPS
Alex Bottoms is a biology teacher at Reed’s School, a Surrey-based independent school and the Party Leader for two annual junior and senior pupil ski trips.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SKI
Stay organised.
SCHOOL
Each SkiBound school trip includes ski instructions for group lessons
Skier or snowboarder, please liaise with your sales person to discuss the different required instructor ratios.
All our ski trips accommodate different skill competencies.
When you reach the slope on day one, the ski instructors will test your party and sort them into ability groups.
A TYPICAL DAY
Typically, you’ll ski for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon, with a two-hour break for lunch:
Skiing 9 am - 11 am • LUNCH • Skiing 1 pm - 3 pm OR
Skiing 11 am - 1 pm • LUNCH • Skiing 3 pm - 5 pm
“The Deux Alpes resort is incredibly varied with slopes for all levels. We are the only resort that offers skiing throughout the season, from November 30 to July 6. Come and discover this magnificent ski area with our passionate ski instructors! “
Xavier Sillon, Director of the ESF des Deux Alpes since 2012
A ski trip is similar to any school trip. You need to be incredibly organised. Ensure you have a decent spreadsheet that lets you track everything, including who has paid. The SkiBound team will help you understand the payment procedures, but you’ll need to ensure you have received enough money to cover the different deposits in the lead-up to departure.
Run a ski trip lottery.
Our school ski trips are always oversubscribed. Rather than offering it on a first-come, first-served basis, which can be a bit unfair if parents haven’t seen the email quickly enough, we now do a random number generator lottery for who gets to go on the trip, which works well.
Try to bring more teachers for extra cover.
Ensure you bring enough staff so there are always a couple extra based in the hotel. Inevitably, there will always be a child with a cold or a minor injury, and you must be able to deal with those situations. We’re rather lucky as we tend to have six or seven staff members on a trip of 40-45 students.
There are plenty of benefits to coach travel.
I’ve taken our ski groups both by coach and flying. While flying is often quicker and more comfortable, I think there’s still value in the coach trips, particularly at half term, as that makes the price cheaper. Also, it means you can choose a hotel slightly out of town, which tends to be less expensive and sometimes exclusive to your party. You then have the coach at your disposal, or you can just use it to get up the slopes. This also means the students are kept in the same place together.
Plan in downtime
While it’s tempting to fill every evening with activities, keep one night free so your students can relax and catch up on their busy days spent on the slopes, travelling, and any time zone differences.
Be prepared for your pupils to outshine you!
It was brilliant to see our beginner group get better than one of the teachers who has skied on the last four trips! They very politely said, ‘Sir, do you mind if you don’t come with us today? You’re holding up the group!’
SKI ITALY
Why is Italy ideal for school ski trips?
The Ski Experience - Italy offers a diverse range of ski resorts, from charming village settings to high-altitude options with good snow reliability. Many hotels are just a short walk from the slopes, making access easy and stress-free. The ski areas are wellsuited to all ability levels, with lift passes that can grow with your students’ progress throughout the week. Local ski schools are known for their warm, student-focused approach, with instructors who prioritise confidence, development, and enjoyment on the snow.
The Milky Way allows you to ski in several resorts - you can even ski two countries in one day by zipping into France! Some ski resorts, such as Prato Nevoso, are invitingly small, allowing you to get well-acquainted with the area.
Off the Mountain - Indulge in Italy’s famous cuisine. Your ski experience will be laden with warming, traditional pasta dishes and authentic Neapolitan pizza.
Enjoy excellent hospitality. Your school group will be welcomed with open arms, with many accommodations family owned and run.
Ski trips to Italy offer excellent value compared to similar European resorts.
PASSO TONALE - Take your pick of the piste with over 100kms of skiable terrain.
Meet the Milky Way
- The Milky Way is a renowned skiing area that covers six resorts in Italy (Sauze d’Oulx, Sestriere, Claviere, Pragelato, Sansicario, Cesana) and crosses borders into the ski resort of Montgenèvre in France. In total, it covers an incredible 400kms of pistes and is an excellent perk for experienced Party Leaders to enjoy while students are in ski school!

SAUZE D’OULX - Varied pistes, lively après-ski, and easy access from Turin makes Sauze a top Italian resort.
SKI AUSTRIA
The hills are alive with the sound of skiing!
Why is Austria ideal for school ski trips?
The Ski Experience - Expect a wealth of varied pistes for all abilities. Where else can you ski down a mountain and see a lake at the same time?
Mountains are safe as many resorts are tree-lined, which makes it easier to manage groups as they follow down the mountain. The resorts are renowned for their infrastructure, including advanced lift systems that access a variety of terrain and top glacier ski areas. And, if snow is sparse, Austria boasts exceptional snowmaking technology!
Off the Mountain - Resorts are really easy to reach, as most accommodation is located in the valley. Your group won’t have to deal with hairpin bends or windy roads. While roads are regularly cleared of snow, you can embrace the alpine beauty during your journey. Most hotels are family-run and good value. The hospitality here is unique, embodying cosy, home-from-home comfort, which is why our school groups often return to the same property year after year.
Did
you know? Skiing is classed as a national sport in Austria. And no wonder, as the country boasts some of the biggest ski areas in the world. In fact, a Ski Circus ski pass covers Zell am See, Kaprun, Saalbach, and Hinterglemm, which is why Austria is so popular across the World Cup Circuit and for big downhill competitions.
Top Tip - Most hotels are located in the valley, but if you’re seeking a slopeside resort, then there are a few options if you fly into Salzburg or Innsbruck airports.
Popular Activities - Pizza nights at mountain restaurants with traditional music and lederhosen • Swimming and sliding at nearby waterparks • Bowling with Austrian skittles • Scenic hikes • Quiz and movie nights at the hotel • Watching local ice hockey games, especially in Zell am See • Skiing on glaciers in the resorts of Stubai, Zillertal, and Zell am See • Thermal baths near Gerlitzen • Curling • Sauna and spa options for Party Leaders
Don’t miss - The Maisi Flitzer Alpine Coaster. Imagine a rollercoaster set on the edge of the mountain. With ones located in both Salzburger Sportwelt and Zell am Zee, you get to whizz through the air to an impressive glacier backdrop!

Why is North America ideal for school ski trips?
The Ski Experience - Skiing in North America is exceptionally organised. When you arrive, your students’ boots, poles, and skis will be labelled. Ski resorts in North America always have a base lodge, around which your entire ski experience revolves. You can walk straight out onto the slopes and return there for lunch. The lift attendants are attentive and will organise your party into the lift so you can safely reach the trails.
Off the Mountain - There’s no language barrier, and Americans and Canadians are notoriously friendly. Great for big groups, the ski hotels tend to have a large capacity thanks to the standard practice of bed sharing.
Best time to visit - Spring skiing in March and April, including during the Easter holiday, is a fabulous time to plan your school ski trip as it’s quieter yet still snow-sure.
Top tip - Always check your students’ passport validity well in advance! To enter North America, you’ll need an ESTA or ETA. These forms ask many questions but are easy to complete.
BANFF - Embrace warm hospitality in the renowned heart of the Canadian Rockies.
SKI NORTH AMERICA
Exceptionally organised ski resorts, bursting with unique activities
East & West Coast USA vs Canada: What’s the difference?
The East Coast - The East Coast generally provides rolling, tree-lined trails ski resorts. While these are often classed as hills rather than mountains, they still offer a challenge to advanced skiers.
Our most popular resort, Jay Peak, has one of the highest vertical drops and hosts some of the World Cup training teams. Given its geographical location, it’s ideal for the early and late ski season.
The West Coast & Canada - The West Coast and Canada typically have a higher elevation, particularly in the Rockies and Colorado. Yet, unlike Europe, you don’t necessarily need the elevation for it to be cold. For example, the ski resort of MontTremblant in eastern Canada can get cold and snowy even at an elevation of just 968 metres!
Delightfully remote, Canada offers some of the most fantastic wilderness and wildlife experiences.
MONT ST ANNE - An advanced skier favourite! Reach the slopes in no time, as you’re just 30 minutes from Quebec City.
