Introduction Going West for inspiration Twenty young entrepreneurs are looking for inspiration; all students or staff members of the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). All of them are involved in early phase ICT-start-ups.

The town of Delft has a long history in technology based new business ventures, a tradition started by Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek, inventor of the optical microscope, four centuries ago. For 170 years the TU Delft has been a rich source of new technology in a broad scope of human activities, from architecture and industrial design to water management and ICT. Large Dutch companies like Shell, Unilever and Philips benefitted from Delft technologies and employ TU Delft alumni.

In today’s business climate new technology regularly starts in novel entrepreneurial small and global companies. In the few years of its existence the TU Delft business incubator (Yes!Delft) houses over 100 start-ups, several of them represented in our team. These young entrepreneurs visiting the Bay Area are exploring new opportunities in the ICT area. Most of them are related to the Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) faculty.

As a proud dean, I am really excited to join this team on its inspirational and educational fact finding mission to Silicon Valley.

Binkies Online retail is at a disadvantage. Potential customers walk off to ‘brick and mortar’ stores to get a feel for the product they would like to buy. Conversion opportunities are lost because shoppers seek the experience of holding a product in their hands to get a better understanding of what they find online. Images and videos often don’t generate enough product understanding and purchase intent.

Studies show that interactive 3D product experiences significantly increase product understanding and purchase intent online compared to 2D media. Our company empowers retailers to easily and efficiently present their products online to their customers in professional interactive 3D experiences.

Give us a product and we will create an interactive 3D experience for it. This is what we call a binky. All our binkies are hosted on our cloud-based online platform that enables our customers to easily embed the binky in any website or web shop, just as simply as using a YouTube video. Get the ultimate online product experience without the technical complexities.

Komii This fourth-year PhD student of EEMCS, Section Microwave Sensing, Systems and Signals (MS3), Department of Microelectronics, designs together with 4 other developers and designers, an online 3D video chatting software. The software is based on the advanced 3D gesture recognition hardware “The Leap”.

Komii (sounds like ‘Call ME’) provides you an opportunity to remotely express yourself to other people using 3D drawing, created by your gesture language. Komii can achieve a better virtual interaction experience than currently available video chatting softwares as Skype, Google hangout. Imagine this: instead of typing complex texts, symbols using the keyboard, you can simply draw in the air with your hands, and your friend can see these texts and symbols on his screen in real time.

“Real-time predictions of road traffic.”

TrafficRadar TrafficRadar is a Dutch company founded by two Java geeks with a PhD in traffic engineering.

We are specialized in making predictions of road traffic. Where others (such as Inrix) use some form of historic averages for their predictions, our predictions are generated by a simulation model that can also take into account incidents, weather conditions and construction works.

Several advanced techniques are applied to fully automate the calibration of this model.

These techniques are now in the final stage of development.

Methylium & MyTimetable With a group of 3 we built MyTimetable, a piece of software that provides students/staff at major educational institutions with personalized up-todate timetables anywhere and anytime. Through the company Eveoh we are now delivering this service to institutions with over 300.000 students in total. After three years of building the company I moved on, but I am still involved as an advisor.

Methylium’s biggest clients include international brands like Priceline.com and Booking.com and major Dutch brands like Parkmobile, NOS and the Dutch Red Cross.

In April 2013 Microsoft awarded me the Most Valuable Professional award in Windows Phone Development for my expertise and community involvement for the second consecutive year.

Since 2010 I also specialized in app development for Microsoft’s new Windows platform. After building a name in the (worldwide) community and getting a great team together I founded Methylium, a company that focuses on managing (international) brands on the Windows platform.

Many companies have their teams for iOS and Android development aligned internally or with a strategic partner. Methylium fills up the gap by working with clients in the way that bests suits their organization.

Minus9 - Carbon Nano Networks As a spin-off company of Delft University of Technology, Minus9 commercially develops an innovative nanomaterial called Carbon Nano Networks (CNNs). CNNs are three-dimensional hyper-branched macromolecules having a networked structure. Their unique structure provides a drastic enhancement in electricaland thermal conductivity in composites. Minus9 currently develops CNNs in close collaboration with space industry for anti-static discharge and improved heat transfer in composite structures for satellites and launching vehicles. Other projects involve the improvement of thermal glues, development of functional coatings and creation of transparent conductive polymers.

The potential of CNN technology is enormous but a successful application requires close collaboration with industry. Therefore I’m happy to represent Minus9 in Silicon Valley to explore and co-create new opportunities!

peerBoard Do you need quick assistance to figure out what is wrong with your lab equipment? Or, maybe you need to perform some peer-to-peer tutoring?

Then peerBoard is your solution; a cross-platform application that aims the easy sharing of ideas in real time between multiple parties.

The application consists of a simple and intuitive graphical user interface. It is made of a canvas that can include objects that could vary from

a document or picture to a clean white board.

It also has a toolbox containing “libraries of primitives”. The interaction model relies on the content of this library and the synchronized exchange of data. The access to the primitives can be done via voice, or other peripherals such as a touch screen or mouse. All in all peerBoard is like your personal assistant waiting for what you say or how you act in order to make your work more efficiently.

Crawljax Crawljax is the only web crawler capable of finding all states of a web application and visualizing them. In doing so, it allows for an in-depth analysis of any web application.

It can report on bugs and security issues, generates regression tests and can test many other things. Most companies that produce web applications cannot run such analysis automatically but instead rely on manual testing by a tester. This labour-intensive process is slow, expensive, error-prone and often does not cover the full application.

So far we have had some great partners to work with including Google, IBM, Ebay, SAP, Ericsson and Fujitsu. During my stay in Silicon Valley I’m looking for more launching customers to help us iron out the last rough edges before our launch.

SparkOptimus Consumers are behaving more digital than ever. Many companies are oblivious and unable to respond to the impact of today’s digital developments. Game-changing events like passing over banks when starting a business (Kickstarter), having full transparency about costs and quality (Booking.com), or being able to access information anywhere at any time (mobile) are changing how businesses need to be run. However, most companies aren’t ready yet.

We support companies with their digital transition, i.e., we help travel agencies to formulate an answer to Booking.com, retailers to design and implement their omnichannel strategy, or FMCG companies to build relevant 1:1 marketing capabilities. We do this with a proven team of 15 professionals with a background in consulting (McKinsey, BCG), the industry (P&G, Ahold), and e-commerce (Truus. nl, Lastminute.com).

This results in high appreciation from our users.

In the two and a half years of our existence, we have made apps for BBC, Ministry of Defense, NPO (Dutch version of BBC), Consumentenbond (largest Dutch consumer organization) and the Dutch National Police. Furthermore, in collaboration with Camel Audio we have built a synthesizer, called Alchemy Synth Mobile. With more than half a million downloads, this is our biggest success so far. In total, our apps have been downloaded for more than two million times.

At the moment, we are working on two games: one competitive math game Do the Math (Rogier Slag is involved as well) and one artistic game from which the details cannot yet be disclosed.

For both we need press contacts from popular blogs such as Mashable and Techcrunch to write about our apps.

ATMOS UAV– the hybrid UAV It looks like a bird, flies like a plane, and hovers like a helicopter. The unmanned aircraft of ATMOS uniquely combines the range and speed of conventional airplanes with the flexibility of helicopters. Because of this pioneering hybrid design a new set of applications can be performed by the drone. Use case scenarios include observation in cases of emergency or disaster, search & rescue missions, inspection of (infra)structures, or deliverance of medicine to impassable regions. The aircraft is equipped with extensive autonomous flight capabilities, that allow the operator to fully focus on the information that matters for the mission at hand.

from now the first product will be launched in the rapidly emerging drone market. Currently, ATMOS started collaborations with ancillary industries, where pioneering applications of UAVs are developed.

Our team consists of six aerospace engineers that have all the in-house knowledge needed to develop this high-tech technology. In the first year of development the concept has been proven by the five functional prototypes that already have been constructed. Within two years

DIMES Technology Center – TU Delft TU Delft PhD student Jiaqi Tang and Prof. Kees Beenakker have developed a novel Microwave Induced Plasma (MIP) instrument and are now starting a business to sell the instrument to the semiconductor industry. The MIP instrument is a breakthrough in failure analysis methods and has been proved to be the only viable method to open advanced copper wire bonded semiconductor packages while not causing any damage to the internal components.

There is one patent pending on this MIP instrument. One order on prototype machine has been received. 7 industrial partners are working with us on using the MIP instrument to solve their headaches in IC failure analysis tasks. Our advanced technology and close relation with industry allow us to penetrate into this high-tech niche market. The current phase is to find the third investor, produce and sell commercial machines.

Estimated market size is $200 million, with a total investment needed of only $0.8 million.

Net-Les Net-Les is an online platform providing tutoring lessons to high school students (and a pilot project among University students is currently running).

The platform was created by TU Delft alumni and Jeroen is responsible for the technical aspects and digital marketing of the startup.

Recently, in cooperation with the Dutch ‘Nationale Examentraining’, extensive exam training was added. We’re offering bundles of online tutoring from Net-Les combined with 1-day exam training, achieving perfect preparation for the Dutch exams in May.

The web application consists of a digital whiteboard, video and audio communication and chat messaging. Course materials can be inserted or uploaded from a scanned document, like homework or and old exam. This way, students can get personal tutoring, wherever and whenever they want.

Do The Math & in-ventID At a first glance it seems there are mobile games designed for almost any audience. But there are more than enough new and unexplored possibilities to develop new concepts. “Do The Math� is one of these concepts, targeting people who enjoy working with numbers. The game will join existing games as Wordfeud, Draw Something and Candy Crush. The idea was derived and developed in cooperation with Innovattic.

Passbook: in-ventID is the way to go. in-ventID quickly grew and at the moment handles thousands of payments every single month, handling tens of thousands of euros at a time.

At this stage in-ventID is expanding, developing more and more sophisticated ways to sell tickets.

Besides this game there is in-ventID: a ticketing provider between the actual customer and the event organization. Faster, cheaper and customer friendly than existing international ticket providers. The goal is simple; cash collection, online payments and the actual ticket validation is provided as an all-in-one package. Whether one needs e-tickets, RFID wristbands or iPhone

to3D-IP - Depth from Luminance Together with my colleagues Boris Lenseigne and Pieter Jonker we developed a method called Depth from Luminance, for extracting 3D images from a single lens camera. This method exploits the capability of High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging to capture values related to the illumination of a scene, to unfold the image and build a perceptually consistent depth map of that scene.

are now in the process of building the hardware demonstrator. This hardware implementation will be capable of creating 3D video from 2D video acquired by 1080p High Dynamic Range Camera.

We are collaborating with a broadcasting camera manufacturer to make a demonstrator capable of producing live 2D+depth video streams. Such a camera will greatly ease the production of 3D content for the broadcasting industry, as well as for the consumer markets. At this moment we have a software demonstrator that can produce depth from luminance from a single image. We also have a software simulation of the hardware architecture that proofs the architectural concepts to make a streaming version in an FPGA, and

RecruIT I’m here for two reasons, and funnily enough both have got to do with the hiring process in tech companies. Let’s get the easy one out of the way: I’m a nearly-graduated Computer Science student looking for amazing opportunities. Besides that, I’m working on an idea to make recruiting in IT less tedious than it is now.

Recruiting takes up a very large portion of every HR budget, and bad hires seem to occur everywhere. On the other hand, very good potential candidates drop out during the process too. There is a silly amount of money being spent on recruiting, and so much being lost in the process.

Online assessments are very common in the first or second round of any tech company’s hiring process nowadays. However, these assessments don’t always match the (often very vague)

requirements, are of varying quality and require a lot of time to manage per potential hire. I propose a platform where both theoretical and practical IT skills can be tested. Companies can buy the portal and create their own online assessment, specific per candidate, testing exactly what they are looking for. Has the candidate measured a specific skill recently already? Use that result instead, test on others. Don’t know what you’re looking for? Get one of your current employees to do a general test and we’ll find a similar engineer. Hiring becomes much less of a hassle for everyone involved.

Drimpy enables patients to manage their own medical records, track parameters such as weight, mood and blood glucose levels and share these with fellow patients and care providers in a secure way. This allows medical professionals to monitor their patients’ progress real time. Hospitals benefit through increased efficiency and reduction of medical errors.

Delft University of Technology’s (TU Delft) unique social position, as set out in ‘Challenging the Future’, means that our programmes are designed with the engineers of the future in mind. It is these young engineers that will develop novel solutions to the global challenges of the year 2040. The world’s population is expected to grow to 9 billion people by 2050, but as yet the living standards of the vast majority of the world’s population still lag far behind those of the rich developed world. Rising living standards in the developing world represents the greatest challenge of the future and will unleash complex issues. Increasing energy consumption and dwindling natural resources, a worsening climate problem, globalisation, structural poverty, urbanisation, war and international migration would all seem to be in store.

Electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science will make vital contributions to global welfare, well-being, and security. ICT will play an essential role in our future society. It will be a driver of ever greater globalisation, connecting a world which will become totally networked at all possible levels. Expanding virtualisation will also lead to new paradigms. The Faculty of EEMCS will make a real contribution to developing sustainable products and systems and address the challenges of energy production, storage and distribution.
