A decade ago, we introduced our first Report to Our Community – not just because a regulation said we had to, but because we believed (and still believe) that our community is interested in how its community hospital is meeting its mission and nonprofit obligation.

Much has changed in the last decade and yet much has stayed the same. Now, as then, we recognized that a healthy community requires not only an investment in the hospital and our programs, but also an investment in the communities we serve. In this report, we will share with you just how we endeavor to provide health care – here, there and everywhere.

Within the pages of this report, you will learn about the opening of the TMC Rincon Health Campus in Southeast Tucson, the development of a unique partnership with El Rio Health to create an innovative

primary care location in downtown Tucson known as HealthOn Broadway and other infrastructure investments in our community.

You will also read about how the community is coming together to address the opioid crisis with compassion for those impacted and innovation to help them recover. True to Tucson’s nature, we are addressing this as a community.

It’s easy to get discouraged about health care if you just pay attention to the political debate. Headlines refer to Obamacare, Trumpcare and Ryancare as the country grapples with the future of health care. For TMC, be assured that we are focused on patient care and building a culture of health and wellness throughout our community.

We always have been and always will be - because we are Tucson’s medical center and we are here for you.

Southern Arizona’s economy is growing. New businesses are moving here, jobs are being created and the forward momentum is palpable. This is good news for the health and wellbeing of our region because good jobs and strong businesses are critical to healthy citizens.

While we look forward to the impact of new businesses, a strong base of businesses has provided the foundation for economic growth.

Companies like Raytheon, Tucson Electric Power, El Rio Health and, of course, TMC HealthCare, have been consistent contributors to the Tucson economy for decades.

TMC HealthCare is an economic engine for this region. In the pages of this report you will read about investments in new facilities in Southeast Tucson and downtown, as well as further renovation on our main campus at Grant and Craycroft. Over the last decade, TMC has invested more than $300 million in our health care infrastructure throughout Southern Arizona.

In this report, we talk about the community benefit provided to the community. It’s important to remember that our impact extends beyond those numbers. TMC HealthCare’s business operations

create more than 3,700 direct jobs and 2,800 indirect jobs for a total of 5,900 total jobs. In addition to being one of Tucson’s largest employers, TMC has a total annual economic impact of $739 million, according to an economic impact report prepared by the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association and Rounds Consulting Group.

We are committed to continuing to positively impact Arizona’s economy and the communities we serve.

Continued success will be predicated on continued improvement and evolution.

And, while the extent of our impact is in the millions, our path forward will continue to be providing excellent and safe care throughout our community one patient, one customer at a time.

As we focus on broader strategies for the future, we know that our success lies in the experiences of individuals in our hospital, our clinics, our wellness centers and beyond.

Know that while we think big in terms of the future, we know our long-term success depends upon building on the legacy of caring, compassion and dedication to our patients and our community.

As I ponder what to highlight in looking back at last year and forward to the future, I reflect upon the vast number of disciplines and specialties represented here at Tucson Medical Center. From medical oncology to surgical subspecialties, cardiology, neurology, pediatric services or any number of other areas, we possess an impressive range of providers who care for this community.

The TMC network continues to expand with the alliances that have been built with the Mayo Clinic, El Rio Health, our rural colleagues in the Southern Arizona Hospital Alliance and others – which speaks to the importance we place on harnessing the benefits of collaboration, collective learning and expanding the frontier of health care delivery.

However, I am most proud of the role TMC plays here in Southern Arizona.

It is very unique and special for a nonprofit community hospital such as TMC to be as successful as it is in our current health care climate.

A great part of this success comes from the people who work at TMC. They come together as a group of individuals under the TMC umbrella to work cohesively, providing high-quality medical care. This outstanding core of individuals – administrators, physicians, nurses, support staff and volunteers - are united in their dedication to the mission of TMC.

I am convinced that our cohesiveness will serve our institution well as we navigate the challenges and uncertainty that we will undoubtedly encounter in the future, particularly as elected leaders at the national level define their goals for health care and seek to make changes that we hope will be best for the country.

The future landscape of health care will be complex. As we weigh how to best deliver high-quality, affordable, accessible care, we have to strive to get it right. No less than 100 percent of the population needs medical care in some form, at some time. And, too, as our local community continues to expand and grow from a business perspective, a strong health care sector is a linchpin for this economic growth and stability.

As the debate surrounding the delivery of health care evolves, I see physician and nursing leaders working together as never before on projects to achieve quality goals for care and patient satisfaction, striving to surpass national benchmark standards established by organizations such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. I am certain the people of TMC are committed to their community and will continue to play an active role in meeting the future goals of the institution.

TMC and El Rio expand care downtown with HealthOn Broadway Tucson Medical Center and El Rio Health, two leaders in the local health care industry, joined forces in 2016 to create a new destination for health care in the downtown area.

HealthOn Broadway, at 1 W. Broadway, opened in March 2017 providing state-of-the-art primary care, health education and wellness coaching.

Accessible from the streetcar, the 8,211-square-foot facility is open extended hours to better serve downtown employees and residents. In addition to on-site primary care, patients can attend wellness classes, fitness activities and expert-led educational discussions.

The locally owned and governed entities have been working with employers about the needs of their employees and the convenience of having a downtown health care option.

“Our community is telling us that they want to access health care where they live and where they work,” said Judy Rich, president and chief executive officer of TMC. “We have both been part of the growth of downtown and wanted a space that would build on that momentum,” Rich said.

“We’re really excited about this location and our larger collaboration with our colleagues at El Rio Health to bring this innovative concept to downtown Tucson.”

With both providers committed to engaging patients as active partners in their care, the health center has dialogue rooms in addition to traditional treatment rooms. With every HealthOn employee a certified health coach and with virtual health opportunities available, the center fosters easy interactions between providers and patients to get them the right information to manage or prevent illness and stay as healthy as possible.

“We are transforming how primary care should be delivered through patient experience, innovation, efficiency and clinical outcomes,” said Nancy Johnson, chief executive officer of El Rio. “TMC and El Rio Health are really excited about introducing this creative health center concept to provide world-class care in downtown.”

Rincon Health Campus: Providing convenient care for southeast area residents Primary and specialty care is more convenient than ever for residents in the southeast region with the opening in 2016 of the new TMC Rincon Health Campus.

Patients now can address a variety of their health needs all under one umbrella, at the two-story, 44,000-square-foot campus at South Houghton and East Drexel roads.

The building’s exterior has a similar aesthetic to the main campus, sharing colors and materials to help identify the new building as a TMC HealthCare facility.

In addition to TMCOne primary care providers who are on site to deliver family care, Rincon also features an outpatient infusion clinic, offering blood transfusions, hydration and specialty injections.

Patients also have access to on-site specialty services, including orthopaedics, radiology, dermatology, cardiology, with others in development.

“Instead of having to travel to get their care at multiple locations, we believe that combining several services under one roof allows us to provide the kind of caring, efficient care that our neighbors expect and deserve,” said Karen Mlawsky, senior vice president and chief operating officer of TMC. 6

January 8 Memorial to honor victims, strengthen community Communities build memorials to remember, to honor, to celebrate and to reflect. Those moments will be captured at a memorial designed to ensure Southern Arizonans never forget the loss that shook our community on Jan. 8, 2011. On that day, a gunman shot and killed six people and wounded 12 others, including U.S. representative Gabriele Giffords, who was hosting a congressional event at a local supermarket parking lot.

Tucson Medical Center in fall 2016 announced its support of a series of memorial gardens west of the Old County Courthouse in El Presidio Park.

The space will serve as a permanent tribute to the victims and also to the spirit of collaboration that makes the community stronger.

“It is our honor, on behalf of our staff and all of the people we serve, to be in a position to help support the creation of this important space to commemorate this shared community experience that touched – and changed – so many lives,” said Judy Rich, president and chief executive officer of TMC. “This memorial will serve as an everyday gathering spot and a place to celebrate our history and our heritage,” Rich said. “And importantly, it will serve as a symbol of the better selves we were when we came together – often with people we didn’t know – to mourn, to work toward more civil discourse and to embrace the hope and promise of the future.”

Dot Kret, president of Tucson’s January 8th Foundation, said TMC is a natural partner for many reasons, from its relationship with many of those directly impacted by the events of that day to its ongoing sponsorship of the annual Beyond wellness festival and its creation of the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown, a series of three running events to honor the too-short life of Giffords’ congressional staffer.

“As a nonprofit community hospital, TMC has had a longstanding commitment to building community and caring for the health of the people who live here,” Kret said. “We are very pleased to join them in establishing this common place that will be a meaningful space of remembrance for those who were touched by the immediacy of the event, as well as those who will come after us.”

TMC works with community to help address opioid misuse, treatment Opioid abuse and misuse was near the top of the list of community health needs when Tucson hospitals, the Pima County Health Department and other community stakeholders conducted a triennial assessment in 2015.

As part of its strategy to address the issue, TMC chose to tackle the problem on two fronts – with parents and babies served by TMC and who have been touched by opioid abuse, as well as with a diverse community task force working on a more global approach.

In spring 2016, TMC opened an annex outside the newborn intensive care unit to provide babies exposed to opiates with a calming, quiet room designed to reduce the overstimulation they might encounter in the main unit. And because babies in withdrawal can be hard to console, specialized staff members are on hand to swaddle and rock them so they feel more secure and supported. But nurses quickly realized more needed to be done for babies to have the most success.

as well as one-on-one therapy, peer support and case management. CODAC addresses needs such as substance-abuse treatment, trauma, postpartum depression and domestic violence.

“Having these services at TMC allows the family to continue to be close to their infant while in the NICU and simultaneously get well themselves, instead of having to choose between staying with their baby or going to treatment off site,” said Dennis Regnier, president and chief executive officer of CODAC. Next steps include work done this year by TMC to spearhead a visioning session for the community to serve as a foundation for a county-wide action plan and to identify barriers that are preventing success in reducing opioid use.

CODAC Health, Recovery & Wellness has teamed up with TMC to make sure that parents struggling with substance abuse, withdrawal or other behavioral health issues get the support they need. Parents have the convenience of signing up right at the hospital with CODAC representatives for on site support groups, parenting classes and skills training 8

Arizona Connected Care successful in cost savings, quality and performance

When Tucson Medical Center helped launch Arizona Connected Care, Southern Arizona’s first accountable care organization in 2012, it was with the premise that we could deliver higher quality care and a better patient experience while better managing costs. The results to date are promising.

Through stronger coordination of care, patients get the right care at the right time, while avoiding unnecessary duplication of services and preventing medical errors.

In 2016, AzCC was among 125 accountable care organizations across the country to demonstrate

significant improvements in the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries, while achieving cost savings.

“The distinction is a confirmation of the excellent work done by our participating primary care practices and our hospital partner, Tucson Medical Center,” said Dr. Daniel McCabe, chief executive officer of AzCC. The accountable care organization achieved a savings rate of 8.34 percent, which resulted in a savings of $4.8 million – and all with a quality score of 94 percent across 33 metrics, up from the previous year’s 89 percent.

Consumer Choice Award: Nursing makes a difference in effective outcomes, compassionate care When Tucson Medical Center was named a 2016/2017 Consumer Choice Award recipient

by NRC Health, it was a testament to those who serve patients on a daily basis.

The annual award identifies hospitals across the United States chosen by health care consumers as having the highest quality and image.

TMC also offers the Acute-Care Transitions program, which allows nurses with acutecare experience in other clinical settings to find their footing by providing extra training with monthly classes for the first year of employment.

“There are many important awards hospitals strive to earn, but the Consumer Choice award is particularly special because it comes from the people we touch, in the community we serve,” said Judy Rich, president and chief executive officer of TMC. “As a nonprofit community hospital, TMC is honored to be recognized for the work we do in caring for our patients and our neighbors in Southern Arizona.”

At TMC, our nursing staff makes a difference in caring for people who are often at their most vulnerable. While TMC’s nursing staff is marked with longevity, the hospital also has programs to support new nurses, as well as nurses who are transitioning to the hospital from other clinical care settings.

TMC is proud to be the only hospital in Tucson to have a full, 12-month program for new nurses. Although newly licensed nurses are well prepared to do the work of caring for patients, mastering technical skills and tools to keep patients healthy and safe that first year is crucial as they begin to focus on a specialty. It is also critical that they have a support system made up of peers and are integrated into the hospital family as a whole.

Spreading knowledge, combating disease: TMC’s culture of safety In an open letter to the community published in the Arizona Daily Star in May 2016, TMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rick Anderson discussed TMC’s commitment to improving the safety of the care we deliver to the community.

Anderson acknowledged the commitment the organization has to continuous improvement using our Lean process, which counts every employee as a problem solver to help root out delays and inefficiencies in order to improve the patient experience. He also said that there is an important role for patients to play.

He wrote, “No matter where you receive care, it’s important that you advocate for yourself throughout your health care experience. If you have questions, make sure they’re answered. If you aren’t sure if we washed our hands before we came into the room, ask us.”

Indeed, the practice that plays an enormous part in keeping our patients safe is the simple act of hand-washing. It is one of the best ways to reduce germs and prevent the spread of illness.

Both for our patients and to meet the standards expected of us, TMC has joined the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s Clean Hands Count campaign to support hand-hygiene activities for the safety of all in the TMC community.

TMC also launched a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of hand hygiene with a Guinness Book of World Records attempt at the World’s Largest Hand-Sanitizing Relay. The 640 participants formed a continuous moving chain through Marshall Conference Center at the hospital.

The hand-washing educational blitz also included a video challenge and the creation of a badge card that serves as a visual reminder for staff and physicians to encourage the use of hand hygiene when it has been missed.

“Our job as a community hospital is to provide the safest, highest quality care to our patients,” Anderson said.

Cyber-Seniors: Students teaching tech to seniors A 2016 survey by the Pew Research Center shows almost two out of three seniors are going online, as the use of technology among older adults continues to deepen.

But for those who could use additional support, enter Cyber-Seniors, a senior-millenial mixer of sorts in which high school students volunteer to teach seniors how to navigate today’s digital technologies.

“There’s a lot of learning and a lot of fun taking place – within both age groups – during these classes,” said Maya Luria, director of TMC for Seniors.

Each senior is matched with a volunteer student from The Gregory School to learn how to log on to social media, use a new web browser or FaceTime with family. Who better to help explain modern computer technologies than teens who have grown up in the Digital Era? “I really wanted to learn how to use computers to communicate with my family – and it turned out to be really fun,” said a 71-year-old participant, as she praised the program and her 17-year-old teen tutor.

In today’s cyber environment, there are understandable concerns regarding identity and software protection.

The course also includes a special two-hour presentation on cyber security and safety taught by TMC Information Services.

Cyber-Seniors started as a film, documenting millennials teaching seniors how to use computer, smartphone and social-media technology. The film quickly became a movement that spread throughout the country. The innovative program is offered locally through TMC for Seniors at the El Dorado Health Campus with support from the TMC Foundation and Community Finance Corp.

“We encourage the students to volunteer in the community,” said Lori Patton, assistant head of The Gregory School, “and Cyber-Seniors is a meaningful way for students to contribute – sharing their digital knowledge with seniors.”

Physician achieves ablation milestone Tucson Medical Center congratulated Dr. Darren Peress on a significant achievement: In December 2016, he had performed 1,000 stereotactic ablations for patients challenged by an irregular heartbeat.

Peress, a specialist in cardiac electrophysiology, said the field is quickly evolving in the study and treatment of the heart’s electrical activity. “It’s impressive how far technology has come. Today, we’re helping patients that had few, if any, options just 15 years ago.”

An irregular heartbeat, also called an arrhythmia, can create premature or extra heartbeats, causing palpitations, or a “fluttering” feeling, in the chest.

While arrhythmias can be mild, serious arrhythmias can also cause chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, stroke or sudden death.

Cardiac-electrophysiology procedures are unique because of the skill required, the technology used and the dramatic difference they make in a patient’s quality of life.

Most patients are able to head home the same day and many see dramatic results immediately – able to engage in normal activity without the possibility of vertigo, difficulty breathing or serious heart problems.

Peress is especially pleased to see efficacy rates increasing as technology advances. “The Stereotaxis equipment is a leading technology that provides very detailed information to the doctor in real time,” he said. “Movement and placement can be done more safely and accurately – making it possible to treat certain types of arrhythmias that were extremely challenging before.”

Technology makes a difference, and it is not available everywhere. “TMC is the only hospital in Arizona featuring the Stereotaxis equipment – one of the many reasons I perform my procedures at TMC,” the doctor explained.

After reaching the benchmark of helping 1,000 patients, Peress’ next goal? “A thousand more!”

Stroke prevention event uncovers serious health risk for winter resident Norman Clarke is a healthy, active 81 year old who enjoys hikes in Sabino Canyon, outings to the symphony and visits with friends.

The retired automotive engineer exercises three times a week at the gym. He sees his doctor twice a year for checkups. He takes medication to keep his cholesterol in check – and his blood work always comes back great.

But when he heard from a friend at the gym that Tucson Medical Center was hosting its annual free stroke prevention screenings for the community in April, he and his wife, Mary Louise, thought it couldn’t hurt to go.

They were stunned at the results. As expected, his labs and EKG came back fine. But a scan of his carotid arteries, the major blood vessels in the neck that supply blood to the brain, showed a blockage of more than 70 percent on the left side.

“I was shocked. There had been no symptoms and nothing to indicate this was a problem,” Norman recalled. “It was serendipity that we went that day, because I would never have known otherwise about the great risk I was facing.”

A stroke on the left side could impact mobility on the right side of the body, as well as speech and language problems, and memory loss.

His doctor cleared the calendar for a scan of his arteries. The news was even worse than he learned initially: the blockage was 90 percent.

Instead of being on a plane going back home to Michigan, as the Clarke’s had anticipated, Norman was scheduled for surgery. The 90-minute surgery, known as a carotid endarterectomy, required an overnight stay in the hospital and a week of good behavior at home: no lifting or dragging of heavy objects, and listening to every instruction from Mary Louise, a former medical-surgical nurse and retired nursing professor.

Mary Louise was impressed the morning of Stroke Prevention Saturday to see how the TMC staff and volunteers mobilized to help the community’s seniors – from volunteers registering guests, to the physicians, pharmacists, neurology nurses, lab services and ultrasound staff and more who volunteered their own time on a Saturday morning to make a difference.

“They should be proud to know they saved my husband from a catastrophic event,” she said. “It is because of the efforts of the TMC that his life was spared from a stroke or even worse.”

Wildlife, Wildflowers Abound In

Springtime at Tucson Medical Center brings blossoms, flowers and, sometimes, wee chirps.

Add two hummingbird chicks to the number of births last year at the hospital. Don’t look for them in Labor & Delivery, but, rather on a patio at Peppi’s House, TMC’s inpatient hospice facility. The birds were just a few of the many animals and blossoms spotted around campus last year. Maintained by a talented and dedicated staff of landscapers, TMC’s 120 acres of desert vegetation always attracts an abundance of wildlife, enjoyed each year by thousands of patients, families, staff, volunteers and neighbors.

Lean management supports more effective medication management When patients leave the hospital, it is important they are clear on the role that medication plays in their recovery, as well as in managing their condition over the long term.

A new program, which started as a pilot project and was supported through Lean management processes, is now ensuring a safer discharge for patients on multiple medications and with complex cardiac conditions.

Under the program, before these patients leave the hospital, they meet with pharmacists to go over how to take their prescriptions at home and what to expect. Patients with a clear understanding of their discharge instructions – particularly how to take their medicines – are more likely to stay healthier and out of the hospital.

Dedicated pharmacy technicians in the Emergency Department also routinely check to make sure records are accurate 17

on a patient’s current medication regimen – including if they have taken their dosage that day or are due for one.

That way, necessary medications are not delayed. And importantly, when new medications are ordered, they can be checked for contraindications.

“Because the timing is so critical, the goal was to get the right people in the room and get them to appreciate not only each person’s role and the sensitivity of the timing, but how important every piece in the thread is,” said Cheryl Young, Lean transformation officer for TMC, in explaining how the pilot program evolved.

Lean is a continuous improvement system that helps make processes within the

hospital better, whether newborn intensive care or laundry services. This results in a better patient experience, increased patient safety, and hospital stability and growth.

To better assist with building an accurate record for patients, who sometimes arrive disoriented or unconscious, TMC also invested in technology that is able to securely access prescriptions from other community pharmacies.

“Pharmacists are ideally equipped to perform accurate medication reconciliation, and to have those conversations with patients during the discharge process to really educate them about what to expect and how to stay healthier at home,” said Gilbert Romero, director of TMC Pharmacy.

TMC officials serve as policy thought leaders on national scale Most people can agree that health care should be accessible, high-quality, high-value and effective.

Advocacy is about making sure laws, budgets, policies and priorities at the state and national level align with these goals. Several TMC leaders are helping to shape this discussion.

Judy Rich, R.N., president and chief executive officer of Tucson Medical Center, was named to the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees. The board is the association’s policy-making body and has ultimate authority for the governance and management of its direction and finances.

A nurse by training, Rich’s term on the 28-member board runs through December 2018. She is the only hospital executive from Arizona, where she previously served as the chair of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association Board of Directors from 2012-2015.

Julia Strange, vice president of TMC Community Benefit, received recognition from the American Hospital Association as a “Grassroots Champion” for her role in broadening the base of support for hospitals.

Each year the AHA, in partnership with state hospital associations, selects one person from each of the 50 states who has been instrumental in working at the grassroots level to champion the policy priorities of hospitals and the patients they serve. This includes educating leaders and members of the public about major issues affecting hospitals, and sharing information about the critical role hospitals play, from healing illness to promoting wellness and serving as an economic engine in their communities.

Daniel McCabe, M.D., chief executive officer of Arizona Connected Care, Southern Arizona’s first accountable care organization and one that counts TMC as its hospital member, is currently serving on the Healthcare Transformation Taskforce. The taskforce is an industry consortium designed to accelerate the pace of delivery-system reform to deliver better health and better care while driving efficiency.

“It’s critical that payment to health care providers should be based not just on the numbers of patients they see and procedures they perform, but on whether patients are actually better off because of the care they deliver,” said McCabe, who is engaged in several other networks and collaborations.

Tucson Medical Center recognized for significant energy savings Using less electricity not only helps Tucson Medical Center reinvest these savings in strengthening the physical health of the community, but also helps protect the community’s environmental health.

TMC was one of 12 organizations awarded the TEP BrightEE Award in 2016 for its work in reducing energy consumption, saving more than 2.7 million kilowatt hours in 2015 alone.

That translates into the equivalent annual energy use of 196 residential homes – accomplished largely by modernizing equipment and installing LED lighting.

TMC celebrates “Legendary Teacher Day” by honoring Whitmore Elementary teacher Great teachers are critical in building community – and as Tucson’s community hospital, TMC paid tribute to a neighbor for Legendary Teacher Day, held the fourth Thursday of September.

In 2016, TMC recognized Ann Hall, a fifth grade teacher at neighboring school, Whitmore Elementary. Like all exceptional teachers, Hall works hard every day to make a positive impact on students.

In addition to developing children through academics and social/emotional development, Hall also understands the importance of physical health. She volunteered her time after school for two seasons to help support Girls on the Run – a program for girls in third through fifth grades focused on developing healthy behaviors and positive self-image through running. TMC encourages the entire business community to celebrate a Legendary Teacher who is making a difference in our future.

In addition to providing the community with opportunities to celebrate reading and engage in thoughtful dialogue, since 2009 the festival has donated more than $1.4 million to local literacy providers, including Literacy Connects, Reading Seed and the University of Arizona Literacy Outreach program.

“Literacy is a key factor for an individual’s lifelong health and wellness,” said Julia Strange, vice president of TMC Community Benefit. “Literacy supports economic stability, which is strongly correlated with physical health. And from a health care perspective, it is absolutely critical in understanding health information, whether it’s how to take your prescription or whether you should fast before your next lab test.”

Employees create a visual reminder of kindness Triple digit June temperatures didn’t dampen enthusiasm for dozens of TMC employees and volunteers who took shifts to install a “Be Kind” mosaic mural in a patio near the Gift Shop.

The Kindness Patio was the latest evolution in TMC’s participation in the Ben’s Bells Kind Colleagues program, which asks businesses and organizations to place a priority on building a positive workspace.

During Hospital Week in May 2016, staff volunteered to make the tiles that would become the mural.

“We wanted to find a space where they would have a chance to see the mural and where it could reinforce the work that we do here every day – particularly since the practice of kindness is already reflected in our mission and our values,” said Hope Thomas, director of TMC Community Outreach.

Tucson Medical Center continues to realize its mission of focusing on health and the well-being of people in our region. Today and every day we express our gratitude to the Southern Arizona community for its generosity and interest in making a positive difference in the lives of our patients and their families. The TMC Foundation achieves its mission by encouraging philanthropy to grow meaningful and effective programs and services.

This year we launched the Grateful Patient program, a new endeavor to engage and channel patients’ gratitude for the care they receive at TMC. Expressing thanks may be one of the simplest ways to feel better.

When we encounter an opportunity to match a donor’s interests with the needs of our patients, we can support complementary services that enhance healing and speedy recovery. The Healing Art program is grateful for the momentous gift from Marlies Terpning, dedicating a courtyard to her husband, Howard. It includes the installation of a breathtaking sculpture. And through our TMC-Mayo Clinic relationship, we received a challenge match from the Raskob-Paulus Family Challenge Fund to support cancer survivorship.

We have been honored and humbled to receive considerable estate plan gifts. We highlight one such gift in honor and memory of Dr. John Wilson, former TMC chief of staff, who dedicated his career to his patients.

The radiologist is fondly remembered for his kind nature, sharp expertise and benevolent support for TMC. His family’s estate gift will establish an endowment in Dr. Wilson’s name to improve patient safety and care.

Gifts like these make a significant impact, and help us sustain the care and programs that meaningfully affect patients and their families.

In this issue of On Center, you’ll read about how we formed partnerships with individuals, corporations and foundations to better meet patient needs that support better health outcomes. One example is a new relationship with the Centurions of Southern Arizona. We are especially pleased that the Centurions have selected TMC as its charity of choice.

Our goal is to advance a shared vision for a healthier Southern Arizona.

In 2016, we said goodbye to incredible community leaders who made a lasting and positive impact on Southern Arizona. We honor the passing of TMC Foundation trustee Bill Holmes. Altruistically driven and endlessly generous, his unmatched community advocacy and sincere dedication to helping others have become a Tucson legacy, forever inspiring our community to action. We will continue to miss Bill but his inspiration lives on.

The TMC Foundation also funded advanced technologies unique to Southern Arizona, such as newborn cooling blankets. Previously, infants experiencing hypoxia, a long duration without oxygen, had to be air-lifted to Phoenix. Thanks to the efforts of our Children’s Miracle Network partners, the water-infused, scientificallydesigned blankets are now available at TMC.

I am proud of the outstanding accomplishments we reached in 2016, and it was wonderful to be a part of these achievements in my last year as chairwoman. It has been an uplifting honor to serve alongside our trustees, employees and donors. I enthusiastically welcome Dr. Steve Siwik as our next board chair and look forward to future success under his leadership.

Women of Honor Courtyard offers a refuge for patients, families and an opportunity to honor extraordinary women In 2016, the TMC Foundation celebrated the opening of the TMC Women of Honor Courtyard, a meaningful and poignant addition to the TMC campus. The courtyard publicly and permanently celebrates women who have enriched the lives of others in our community.

The focal point of the courtyard is the Women of Honor sculpture that embodies the spirit of every woman who has graced TMC’s hallways. It represents TMC for Women and the physicians, nursing staff and, most of all, patients and families.

The courtyard is part of the new Joel M. Childers, M.D., Women’s Center and was designed as a pathway through all stages of life. It offers a serene refuge for those about to have a baby or undergo lifesaving surgery. The courtyard provides an aesthetically-pleasing setting that feels less like a hospital.

Two sets of doors and additional windows were added to the courtyard in January, bringing more natural light into the hospital and increasing access to this beautiful area.

Also, people can commemorate an outstanding woman in their lives by donating a ceramic tile in her name. Each unique tile is handmade by local artist Gail Roberts, and featured on the Women of Honor Tribute wall – a dynamic and colorful way to honor extraordinary women. Proceeds from the tiles support innovative programs, services and education at TMC for Women.

The tribute tiles become a permanent part of the courtyard as they branch out, creating a patchwork wall of dramatic colors catching the dancing sunlight through the courtyard.

The series includes a seed pod, a flower bud, a growing flower bud and full-bloom version of each tile offered.

New artwork centerpiece of Terpning Courtyard Western artist Howard Terpning, an award-winning painter and illustrator best known for his paintings of American Indians, has been but one artist from around the world to donate paintings and sculptures that now adorn walkways, waiting areas and courtyards throughout the hospital as part of the TMC Healing Art program.

Terpning has donated many acclaimed pieces to the program, founded in 2014 to support a calm and comforting atmosphere for patients, families and visitors.

“I think TMC is a great place to leave my legacy,” said Terpning. “It’s doubly rewarding to know that my work is also in a public place that does so much good for so many people. I’m very proud of that, and very pleased.”

The new Terpning Courtyard opened last year as a gift from Terpning’s wife, Marlies, to honor his contributions to TMC.

The centerpiece of the courtyard, “Above it All” – is a majestic eagle sculpture in bronze resting atop a flagstone base.

Sandy Scott, a respected wildlife sculptor and former pilot whose work is a favorite of Terpning’s, uses her knowledge of aerodynamics to portray the beauty and movement of birds in flight. She was influenced

by Auguste Rodin’s use of movement and natural distortion, altering elements but preserving their characteristic appearance.

The new courtyard is located in the northeast area of the hospital, off of Ferguson Hall near Marshall Hall and the TMC Gift Shop.

12th employee selected for Habitat for Humanity homeownership Crystal Evans thought she was coming into work solely for her annual performance review. The review was positive – but more good news was in store for the patient care technician, who joined TMC in 2014.

She was selected to purchase one of six new houses being raised in the Copper Vista II neighborhood through a partnership dating to 2005 between the TMC Foundation and Habitat for Humanity Tucson.

The previous 11 TMC employees selected for the program all continue to work at TMC. Evans, a Tucson native who was born at TMC and works in the 16-bed TMC Geropsychiatric Center, was humbled and shocked by the honor. As a single mother of two girls – one in college and one in high school – Evans said homeownership has been a top priority that has had to wait.

“This is something I’ve wanted for a long time, but it was always just out of reach,” Evans said. “I’m so excited now to be able to move forward. This is a dream come true.”

Although TMC volunteers were on hand last fall to help raise the walls on the home, located near Drexel Road and Park Avenue, the process in its entirety takes about nine months.

Evans is ready for the work coming her way.

Habitat homeowners must complete a minimum of 250 hours of “sweat equity,” participate in homeownership education classes, and, ultimately, pay a monthly mortgage, property taxes and insurance. Habitat homes are more affordable, thanks to a mortgage with zero percent interest.

“Homeownership is an investment in our community, which is why we’ve appreciated the partnership with Habitat for Humanity,” said Donna Morton, development director at the TMC Foundation. “And from a more personal viewpoint, Crystal is the kind of employee who represents us well and we’re just excited to be able to invest in her future.”

TMC fall quilt show raises funds for women’s services Visitors were sure to notice the colorful and eyepleasing quilts adorning the hallways this fall during Quilt for a Cause, a month-long silent auction of handmade quilts and patterns to fund breast and ovarian cancer services at TMC for Women.

“It was wonderful to see how much everyone at the hospital enjoyed the quilts and even more wonderful to know the funds are helping women in need,” said Terry Gallegos, president of Quilt for a Cause. All 340 quilts decorating TMC were sold.

“The beautiful quilts lift our spirits, and the ongoing support makes cancer screening and care a reality for women in Southern Arizona,” said Denise Navarrete, supervisor at the TMC for Women Breast Center. “We are truly grateful and thankful for Quilt for a Cause.”

This is the fifth time since 2003 that Quilt for a Cause joined with the TMC Foundation to support TMC for Women, a tradition beautifying the hospital and providing life-saving services to the community.

New quilts are sure to make their way to TMC again.

Quilting patterns purchased through the Quilt for a Cause website will brighten home décor and support cancer services for women in need.

Mega Raffle raises more than $2 million to fund patient care programs

Mega Raffle raises more than $2 million to fund patient care programs

The TMC Mega Raffle reached a four-year total of $2.4 million last year, raffling off more than 2,000 prizes to fund support services, therapies and care at TMC. Each ticket had a one in 20 chance of winning, including two grand-prize packages each valued at more than $750,000.

“The tremendous support from our community for the Mega Raffle has allowed us to continue enhancing our health care services in Southern Arizona,” said Michael Duran, vice president and chief development officer of the TMC Foundation.

TMC Foundation works with the hospital’s clinical departments to identify opportunities to improve and strengthen overall care and patient experience.

“Proceeds from the Mega Raffle give us additional resources to support the programs and services that make a real difference for patients and their families,” Duran said.

A few examples of what the Mega Raffle helps fund: Online prenatal education With prenatal education and care as cornerstones to healthy pregnancies and birth of full-term babies, the Mega Raffle has funded online access to our Preparation for Childbirth education series.

“As the market leader for maternity services, TMC recognizes strong prenatal care includes more than obstetrics visits and healthy lifestyles,” Duran said. “It also includes education related to a healthy pregnancy and delivery.”

The Mega Raffle has funded the effort to make this essential program easily accessible to those who want to take a class online in a setting and time of their choice.

Instead of taking three classes at the hospital campus, expectant parents can view the class online in three separate modules at a time and place most convenient for them.

Massage for heart patients Medical massage is a great way to help patients feel relief from pain, stress and anxiety, muscular tension and swelling, and so much more, according to the director of TMC cardiothoracic surgery.

Mega Raffle proceeds provide medical massage to more than 250 patients on the cardiac unit who have undergone open-heart surgery.

“Massage is good for everyone as a relaxing therapy, but for these patients in particular, it can reduce pain and stress, which ultimately promotes healing and a faster recovery,” said Dr. Gulshan Sethi.

Patients may also experience improved circulation, a stronger immune system and mood improvement.

“Giving clinicians the ability to offer programs like this is a great reason to support the TMC Mega Raffle,” Duran said. “Something as small as a halfhour massage can have amazing results for a patient.

Hospice complementary services

Meaningful and compassionate hospice care is more than meeting complex medical needs. It can include soothing therapies that provide comfort, joy and peace such as the calming melodies of a harp, the therapeutic knead of massage, the ease of a paintbrush stroke or the warm friendliness of a pet.

Proceeds from the Mega Raffle support complementary services offered at Peppi’s House, the inpatient hospice unit. These services include the likes of music, massage, art, pet therapy, reflexology, aromatherapy, reiki and craniosacral therapy.

“Peppi’s House is a special place for many reasons,” said Alicia Ferguson, director of TMC Hospice, “including the pediatric inpatient program, where complementary therapies have an even stronger impact on children and their families.”

“It is simply wonderful to see a child’s face light up when a pony walks in; the child and their family are all smiles – forgetting the seriousness surrounding them,” said Ferguson.

Generous donors inspire gala guests to break fund-raising record and cap off capital campaign TMC Foundation welcomed more than 900 people to the jungle last year, during the 2016 Gala, which not only lived up to its reputation for music, food and performances, but also raised a record-breaking sum due to the generosity of a local family and a philantrhopic challenge from a physician.

Proceeds from the annual affair at Westin La Paloma benefited the capital campaign for the new Joel M. Childers, M.D., Women’s Center at TMC for Women.

A warm moment came over the 900 in attendance as Alan and Jan Levin took the stage and shared their priority to support comprehensive women’s health care in Southern Arizona. Their heartfelt dedication and donations inspired many at the gala, and one in particular. Dr. Sam Moussa, a local gastroenterologist, joined the Levins onstage. After adding a little levity with a comical recollection of raising teenagers, he left the crowd awestruck with a challenge: he would make a transformational gift if the audience would collectively match it.

The contributions, if matched, would support the opening of the Childers Women’s Center – the culmination of a $12.5 million effort to expand and centralize inpatient women’s services in a convenient, appealing and technologically-advanced setting.

In addition to being motivated by the Levin family’s generosity, Moussa was a close friend of the late Childers, a pioneer in many techniques of women’s cancer surgery.

“Joel was a great man and a great surgeon,” Moussa said. “I’m honored to support the medical services he valued.”

TMC Foundation employees and volunteers scurried from table to table, collecting donation packets and hoping to meet the challenge. The crowd cheered as the total was announced. Not only had the donors met the challenge – they nearly doubled it, raising a record-breaking $289,000.

“The charitable leadership of the Levins and Dr. Moussa inspired and motivated our donors,” said Michael Duran, vice president and chief development officer of the TMC Foundation. “Their generous gifts and efforts will make a positive impact, supporting accessible, high-quality care in our community.”

TMC creates miracles with the help of Children’s Miracle Network A most sincere thank you to MIXfm for hosting the TMC for Children/Children’s Miracle Network annual radiothon for 5 years and counting.

Tucson Medical Center has been the Children’s Miracle Network hospital in Tucson for more than 30 years, a partnership that has raised more than $18 million to benefit Southern Arizona – with 2016 adding a number of accomplishments.

Gift sustains vital infant program The William and Mary Ross Foundation made a significant gift last year to the TMC Infant Aftercare program to help ensure TMC can continue to provide the much-needed treatments and therapies for Southern Arizona infants.

Tucson Medical Center is honoring this compassionate, philanthropic leadership by naming the initiative, the William and Mary Ross Foundation Infant Aftercare Program.

“On behalf of TMC for Children, I’d like to express our most sincere gratitude to the William and Mary Ross Foundation for being a part of creating strong future health for the children and families of our community,” said Michael J. Duran, vice president and chief development officer for TMC Foundation.

The TMC Infant Aftercare program was developed to provide opportunities for parents and high-risk infants to receive developmental screenings, identify early developmental challenges and provide education. Such services are vital because

developmental delays significantly impact a child’s gross motor skills, behavioral responses and communication abilities.

While the program was initially created to address the needs of infants born earlier than 36 weeks, TMC opened the program to all babies who have increased risk of developmental delays. Infants considered late preterm, have delayed onset of feeding or with other concerns now have access to the services.

The program is the only one of its kind in Southern Arizona and is made possible through the charitable support of community organizations and individual donors. Since 2012, this program has helped more than 2,100 kids in our community - and the need continues to increase, year after year.

Panda Express associates raise the bar Local Panda Express restaurants are strong supporters of TMC for Children and Children’s Miracle Network, with associates raising a record-breaking $120,000 last year.

For the new “Panda’s Round Up Campaign” associates were encouraged to ask each customer, both in-store and at the drive-thru, if they would like to “round up” their purchases to make a donation to the Panda Cares Foundation, benefitting CMN Hospitals, such as Tucson Medical

Center. In addition, Panda employees made their own donations through one-time contributions or recurring payroll deductions. The efforts paid off. The contributions more than quadrupled compared with last year’s total.

“TMC for Children is grateful for the $120,000 raised to fund life-saving equipment, advanced technologies and educational programs,” said Erika Grasse, director of development for TMC Foundation and Children’s Miracle Network.

“I’d like to extend a sincere thank you to Panda Express, their associates and customers who showed their incredible support for Southern Arizona children and families!”

MIX Miracles tops $1 million mark Last year, the Morning Mix crew on 94.9 MIXfm radio celebrated five years of hosting the MIX Miracles Radiothon benefitting TMC for Children and Children’s Miracle Network raising a total of more than $1 million.

The fun and big-hearted radio personalities broke records this year, taking in nearly $299,021 for a five-year total of $1,237,021!

“A heartfelt thank-you to MIXfm, the Morning Mix crew and the many donors who help TMC for Children make a difference in the health and lives of children and families throughout Southern Arizona,” Grasse said.

During the two-day event, the Morning Mixers talk with parents and families about their children’s care, and how the radiothon supports treatments and programs that improve lives and the community as a whole.

Each year, donations have exceeded expectations and Morning Mixer Mrs. Grant said she knows why, “Southern Arizonans step up to help children because they are our future – and we care about the health and happiness of our community.”

Monies raised during the radiothon fund lifesaving medical equipment, provide vital health services and support programs for kids and babies at TMC for Children. Every dollar raised by the radiothon stays in Southern Arizona to benefit children in our community.

“We’ve met people whose lives have been changed forever – preemies who would not have lived, toddlers who could not have walked – imagine how much better our little corner of the world is because those terrible things never happened,” said Greg Curtis, a member of the Morning Mix.

Kindness, family and community Remembering Dr. John A. Wilson Tucson Medical Center and Southern Arizona lost an extraordinary community leader and physician when Dr. John Wilson passed away on Feb. 2, 2016, at the age of 98. Wilson made an indelible impact on Tucson, and he is remembered for his kind nature, strong expertise and unforgettable athleticism.

After serving in World War II and completing a radiology residency at Northwestern University, Wilson’s lengthy and decorated career began in Yuma before moving to Tucson in 1952. Wilson was the first full-time radiologist at TMC, where he practiced for 42 years and served as TMC Chief of Staff from 1965-67.

He is a former president of the Pima County Medical Society and was a trustee for more than 30 years. In 2006, the organization recognized Wilson with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. He was honored by the Pima County Medical Foundation “in recognition of lifetime achievement in the furtherance of medical education.”

“I can just see him running up to heaven,” said Roxanne Bacon, manager for TMC Radiology Support, who remembers the avid runner as “the kindest, most gentle man I ever knew.”

He also was involved in the Rotary Club of Tucson and other charitable endeavors. His greatest devotion was to family — whether his, his patients’ or his colleagues’. “He was very involved with his family and knew all about yours,” Bacon said.

In recognition of his work and dedication to TMC, the Wilson family has endowed a scholarship in imaging and radiology – The John A. Wilson Scholarship Endowment — funding radiology-certification training and continuing education for radiology professionals.

Wilson’s wife of 72 years, Helen, also has a legacy of supporting TMC, where she volunteered with TMC Auxiliary from 1956-2010, and served as president from 1974-75. For 54 years she helped many patients and families, mostly working in the surgery lobby.

Grant funds imaging equipment for new Douglas emergency department In December, the TMC Foundation awarded Copper Queen Community Hospital and the Douglas community a much-needed grant to support the imaging program for the new Douglas emergency department. The funding supports a new CT scanner.

With the closure of the Douglas hospital, community members seeking emergency care have had to travel more than 25 miles to Bisbee to get care at the Copper Queen Community Hospital.

The new free-standing Emergency Department in Douglas provides a resource residents and the community’s providers of emergency medical services can use so that care can be provided locally. The Douglas Emergency Department has the ability to observe patients for 72 hours prior to transporting to inpatient facilities.

“When we keep health care local, we keep high-quality, costeffective services easily accessible to our patients, and keep experienced professionals nearby to care for their neighbors and friends,” said Jim Dickson, chief executive officer of Copper Queen Community Hospital. “This gift from the TMC Foundation is creating a new level of collaboration between their hospital and ours to improve care across Southern Arizona.”

Tucson Medical Center, the founding member of the Southern Arizona Hospital Alliance, is committed to working with independent nonprofit community hospitals throughout rural Arizona to improve health and the well-being of their communities, said Michael J. Duran, vice president and chief development officer for TMC Foundation.

“By supporting the imaging services program offered through the emergency department in Douglas, TMC furthers our mission by providing vital services to a medically under-served community,” Duran said. “Allowing residents to get quality, effective care closer to home will impact the timeliness of care, the cost of care and the overall experience for patients.”

Honoring the Erickson Legacy Society Last year, the TMC Foundation’s Planned Giving Council honored members of the Erickson Legacy Society with a special evening to celebrate a tradition of planned giving at TMC.

TMC Hospice celebrates 25 years at Rock ‘N Rodeo

“With the community’s support, TMC Hospice has maintained its goal to help patients live as fully and comfortably as possible.”

More than 350 friends of TMC saddled up to celebrate 25 years of TMC Hospice at the 19th annual Desert Toyota of Tucson Rock ‘N Rodeo. The Westernthemed event in March was held at the Last Territory in the Hilton El Conquistador Resort.

Proceeds from Rock ‘N Rodeo support hospice services to families in need and complementary therapies that improve the quality of life for those facing long-term medical challenges. Funds also support We Honor Veterans program to thank, honor and provide better care for veterans in hospice.

This special night celebrated the many volunteers, doctors, nurses and support staff who have provided compassionate care for patients and their families for a quarter of a century.

“We also want to tip our hats to the generous Tucson businesses who have made this event possible through their donations,” said Gabriela Cervantes, this year’s event chair.

With highly praised home-care services and a beautiful, homelike inpatient facility, TMC Hospice provides physical, emotional, spiritual and practical end-of-life care for adults and children.

The Foundation hosted legacy donors and their families at Tucson Country Club.

Festivities included a humorous test of guests’ operating skills and a contest to “name that doctor song” – topped by a presentation of rare artifacts by TMC historian Jerry Freund.

The highlight of the evening was a heartfelt patient story shared by Susie Johnson, a grateful patient of neurosurgeon Dr. Abhay Sanan.

“Her inspiring recollection added special meaning to this ‘thank-you’ event,” said Julie Wolfe Beadle, director of major gifts for TMC Foundation.

In 1943, Tucson Medical Center began with a single act of philanthropy when Mrs. Anna Erickson began donating the land and the buildings of the former Desert Sanatorium for a new community hospital, Tucson Medical Center. Since 2012, the Erickson Legacy Society has recognized this tradition of legacy giving, thanking those who make a bequest or lifetime gift to the TMC Foundation.

Hilton’s legacy continues at TMC TMC lost a longtime friend and partner this year with the passing of Lisa Hilton Myers.

Hilton, and her husband, Doug, opened Hilton & Myers Advertising in 1988 and began shaping the community hospital’s brand just a few years later. The relationship started with TMC-owned HealthPartners Health Plans and has continued through today.

“Lisa was the creative heart behind the look and feel of our ad campaigns, our logos and other distinctive TMC looks. If you look around the campus, you will see Lisa’s touch everywhere,” said Julia Strange, vice president of TMC Community Benefit, who oversees advertising and had worked with Hilton for more than 20 years. “Her artistic eye and her ability to see beauty in everything was unique.”

For the TMC Foundation Gala recognizing TMC’s 60th anniversary, Lisa conceived of an agave in bloom with a rich yellow background. She then executed a small original painting, which became the basis for the invitation and, reused this past year for TMC’s annual holiday card. It was one among many designs seen throughout the hospital over the years.

Her artistic talent brought the Douglas High graduate to the University of Arizona, where she earned a degree in graphic design and illustration. She began her career at Taylor Advertising as an artist and graphic designer.

There she met and later married Doug, and together they left to build one of the largest and most successful advertising agencies in the state, winning over 75 Addy awards.

As owner, art director and creative director of Hilton & Myers Advertising, she was the heart and soul of the agency. She also contributed her time and energies to numerous charitable causes, none more dear to her than the TMC Foundation. In addition to her husband, Hilton leaves behind two adult children.

“She was beautiful inside and out; always kind and caring,” said Strange. “I respected Lisa as a business partner and art director, but she was and is more than that: she was and is a friend.”

Friends of Lisa have come together to honor her legacy in the Women of Honor Courtyard.
